Hypno - Go Shorty / Sunkin

Following on from his debut EP on PTN, 17 year old Icelander Hypno drops his second release on RAMP Recordings.

Moving away from the more common Funky leanings of his debut, Hypno takes a slightly more experimental approach and all in all produces another excellent EP. The a-side, Go Shorty, lands somewhere in the middle of contemporary bass music with juke vibrations of Chicago and a left of centre house vibe. It’s an eerie track which straddles the corners of the dancefloor – not quite the big club banger but will definitely have a crowd worked up. The track journeys the path of producers like Joe; stripping back to the basics and chopping up the sample over woven garage patterns.

Sunkin treads a technoid wood-block path with a tighter groove and again making using of stripped down percussion. A warm sub-bass line laces the clipped drum patterns and woozing synth sounds echo throughout. Again Hypno delivers a melting pot of styles; Funky, Garage, House and Techno all served up with precision of minimal. Each element carefully crafted and mixed to sit beautifully within the arrangement. Things are never over-complicated or messy – the qualities of the individual ingredients do all the work and we’re left with exactly what’s needed.

Both tracks are extremely well constructed and offer up a distinctive slice of the experimental side of uk bass music. Each of these tunes delves into areas of 4/4 and 2-step then lifts and blends the components to create an individual sound which inevitably will defy constrictions of genre labelling. Hypno has by no means gone the easy route, and the results are that he’s delivered an EP which is likely to grab attention from a variety of different DJs and keep a range of ravers happy.

James Blake – Limit To Your Love

Unless you've been living under a rock for the best part of the year, I'm sure you have heard of James Blake. 2010 has been an immense year for this young artist; with his The Bells EP getting rave reviews across the board and similarly the CMYK EP released on R & S an absolute underground smash.

His music tinkers on the fringes of dubstep with a fusion of leftfield electronica and splicings of garage. Ealier this year we saw his second release on R & S; the brilliant Klavierwerk EP drop to further critical acclaim and this gave us an insight into how James' future works may sound. Sampling and cutting up his own vocals to infuse an emotive edge to the track and giving a nod to the soon to be full vocal work of Limit To Your Love.

This release of Limit To Your Love showcases James' amazing soulful voice alongside his excellent production skills; it's possibly the best male vocal of the year and definitely offers a beautiful take on the typical dubstep style. This version of Fiest and Chilly Gonzales' track is the first taste of James' album which is due to drop in early 2011. The track teams up his fragile, heartfelt and emotional vocal delivery with a huge speaker destroying sub-bassline. As soon as that bass kicks in the system is shaking to the ground and we're left with the undeniable feeling that this is an exceptional piece of music.

The track has been featured in James' sets for a while destroying clubs and leaving crowds with their jaws on the floor. I would highly recommend having a listen and also checking out the accompanying video directed by Martin De Thurah.

DJ Dom – The Mind of DJ Dom

Previous knowledge of DJ Dom is a little scarce; with my own only extending as far as Brackles dropping a few choice cuts and giving shout outs on his Rinse FM show. DJ Dom is in fact the uni mate of Brackles and Shortstuff; both of whom have been championing his work for a short while.

This debut EP drops on PTN; the label that’s previously put out releases from Breach, Doc Daneeka, Hypno and Hackman. The Mind of DJ Dom seems to fit extremely well with PTN and sits nicely in line with the label’s other releases – like the others this EP takes the current sound of London’s funky and pushes it to the deeper side of house.

The opener, Boss Mode, is a real percussive slice of deep house, with subtle melodic synth lines and elements of acid creeping in. Computer Love has an altogether different feel; elements of Berlin-esque techno and minimal are given the once over as DJ Dom teams up sparse percussion with a deep plucked bassline and chopped vocals. This second track is a definite highlight; any fans of Floating Points’ style house (and who isn't) are most likely going to fall in love instantly.

Plastic People hits home with shuffling beats and morphing synthwork, whereas the final track from the EP, Untitled, is another real deep number with sweeping synths and a little nod to days gone bye with a squelching acid lead. This is another standout from the release and seems to offer a pretty good summary of the EP; clearly showcasing DJ Dom’s influences with the blending of deep house, techno and more subtle elements of UK funky. The Mind of DJ Dom is a great debut EP; all of the tracks individually showcase his style and clearly demonstrate his influences. The tracks straddle genre lines and take the current sounds of uk bass music that degree deeper into the realms of house – a trend that’s being seen more and more as producers of funky nod more to classic house sounds.

Keep an eye out for a future 12” from DJ Dom dropping on Blunted Robots next year, as well as a possible album on PTN.

The London based souser Slackk has been stirring up the seen for a while now with his trademark sets of eski-house blended with elements of Chicago house, Detroit techno and UK funky. The Theme From Slackk EP features three tracks, each expertly showcasing his talent for production. The title track is an aggressive and energetic dance-floor banger crossing the boundaries of raw techno and tribal funky, while Fire Flies is all eski-house - a nod to the superb work of grime star Wiley. T. Williams ft Terri Walker – Heartbeat

T.Williams is one half of Deep Teknologi, a collective who have been stirring things up in UK bass and house music for short while. With their own label and a string of quality underground house releases, they are a respectable force and although T is venturing out with solo stuff, there is no indication that Deep Teknologi will be leaving us anytime soon.

The Heartbeat EP is T’s second outing on new London label Local Action, the first being the superb T. Williams EP which was championed by everyone from SInden to Kode 9 to Joy Orbison. This new record is most probably his best release yet, teaming up with the mighty songstress Terri Walker who earlier this year signed an album deal with the US giants that are Roc-a-fella Records.

Heartbeat is a really special track; it’s a beautifully composed house tune that rolls with a deep thumping bassline and poised vocal. Nothing is laid out obtrusively; it all feels expertly crafted and delivered with a subtlety that draws on elements of minimalistic house and techno yet also being catchy and full with the vibes of more obvious, heavier UKfunky anthems. The melodic toms and intricate weaving of percussive elements are all finished off in impeccable style with Terri Walker’s exposed vocal. This tune is guaranteed to get a big reaction - whether slotted alongside peak time house or techno or whether it’s dropped in a bass heavy garage / UK funky set the crowd are going to love it, as do I.

The EP also features an extremely slick remix from Mosca. The fabric selector, who has released on Night Slugs and Numbers, hits us up with a stunning take on the original – beginning with a jazz piano and light drums layered with Terri’s gorgeous vocal and building the beat up into an amazing slice of forward thinking funky. The elastic bassline drops and the vocal is chopped up taking on board a classic garage vibe. It’s almost impossible to say which is better, the remix or the original – both are absolutely superb and complement each other perfectly.

It’s clear that Local Action have got a really good thing going, all of the three releases so far being strong, but this third EP is a real banger and definitely the best to date – both from T and from the label. Get ready to hear this one tearing up floors in everyone’s sets, the record skilfully straddles genre lines to the point where it’s gonna be in a lot of different people’s bags. If this release is anything to go by we can expect huge things to come from both the Local Action label and from T. Williams himself.

Gold Panda – Lucky Shiner

Originally hailing from Chelmsford, Essex, Gold Panda is in good company – the town has produced a fair few impressive electronic musicians over the years, including The Prodigy and Squarepusher. Perhaps the Essex mentality adheres to creativity; this album is a clear indication that Gold Panda has a bright future ahead of him.

Being relatively new to the scene, GP spent the early part of last year building a reputation with superb remixes for the likes of Little Boots, Telepathe, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco, Health and The Field. He has since gone on to release three EPs of his own material, live performances soon followed and his invigorated head-hunched style quickly established him as an electronic artist who can really play live.

This debut album is an excellent piece of work – taking on board a huge array of influences, including everything from hip-hop to minimal techno and creating an all encompassing atmosphere. It’s kind of hard to put your finger on why but the album oozes a Japanese vibe right from the offset: clearly Gold Panda has been heavily influenced by his two years spent in the country learning the language.

The opener, You, kicks things off with a heavily sample based hip-hop vibe that feels similar to the down-tempo, bassy electronica currently in vogue due to works from the likes of Mount Kimbie and James Blake. Vanilla on the other hand instantly takes a different route – harking back to old house and techno rythms; with head nodding lead stabs and a strong 4/4 beat. It’s an outstanding track and a great display of the current trend for nostalgic house and techno production.

The third track from the LP, Parents, is an acoustic number simply consisting of subtle field recordings and a light acoustic guitar melody – clearly GP is an outright musician, not simply one limited to the computer. Same Dream China features a haunting, dream-like lead, well crafted percussion and a beautiful Asian string sample. Snow & Taxis couples a UK funky-ish beat with melodic strings, while Before We Talked journeys into minimal electronica. Marriage is a beautiful example of techno akin to works by the likes of Kyle Hall and the two tracks I’m With You But I’m Lonely and After We Talked are both on a down-tempo tip, packed with interesting samples and sonics.

The final two tracks India Lately and You Pt II provide a gorgeous end to the LP, with the former featuring an Indian sitar vibe backed by an industrial beat and the latter a slow rhythmic hip-hop jam featuring epic string filled breakdowns. Gold Panda has delivered a stunning debut LP that sets the mark pretty high; never feeling stale or repetitive.

Adventures in Dubstep and Beyond

Ministry of Sound aren’t exactly known for their risk-taking and forward-thinking approach when it comes to compilations, or even nights, however this new comp is a real breath of fresh air.

Although things are getting better the scene is still plagued by obvious compilation packages put out to satisfy the never-ending stream of dubstep converts who want nothing but the biggest wobble tunes and ‘classics’ from over a year ago. But the tracklist for Adventures in Dubstep and Beyond instantly offers up something different. With tracks from the more underground and relatively unknown producers like Sully and VVV, this compilation brings together styles from across the bass music spectrum. Elements of house, 2-step, dubstep and garage are all expertly chosen and mixed by Joe Muggs.

The first disk offers up a superb collection of garage influenced bass; tracks which are going to be appealing to the more knowledgeable heads as well as those getting their first taste of the new dubstep mutations currently at the forefront. Highlights include the excellent opener; Ikonika’s remix of the Night Slugs anthem The Only Way Up from Egyptrixx, the outstanding garage goodness of Svpreme Fiend’s Downfall and El-B’s This Thrill. The 2-step bangers are coupled with some more familiar hits of dubstep, like the collab between Benga & Goldilocks on Green Eyes and Fused Forces’ What’s Goin Down. These tracks may be on slightly more recognizable ground but Joe Muggs has definitely maintained a sense of the underground and not for once thought about playing it safe with tunes that you’ve heard a million times before.

The second CD illustrates a slightly different side dubstep – how it has absorbed elements of old-skool jungle breaks and of course grime. Producers like Cotti, Scandalous Unltd and Rude Kid all represent with unforgiving dubs packed with massive amounts of sub bass. Highlights include the beautifully dark and aggressive Skull Crusher from Numan and Badness’ grime anthem Nightmare which features Skepta and Lil Nasty and is given a full bassline re-work from Cotti and Coki. This second disk definitely caters for those who like the harsher and more typical 140bpm side of dubstep. The clear distinction between the first and second disks kind of provides a pretty good analysis of the scene.

Dubstep is constantly mutating and evolving in its various forms and you could even say that there are two strains of this mutation, illustrated by the clear styles of two CDs - one which has taken and is moving towards a garage and deeper house vibe and another which is the grimier, harsher and more aggressive template. The 2-step, garage and house mutations featured are worth a purchase alone – it’s always good to see the scene shaking off constraints of genre ties and progressing at a rate where we struggle to categorise the sound. I was pleasantly surprised by what Ministry have delivered with Adventures in Dubstep and Beyond; it’s a compilation which goes some way at trying to introduce the full spectrum of the scene and the extensive landscape of what’s being produced.

James Blake Album Announced

Details finally emerge of the debut album from bass music's man of the moment James Blake.

The past couple of years have seen creative explosions and new generations coming through in both dancefloor electronics and heartfelt, introspective singer-songwriting, but self evidently they’ve remained mutually exclusive genre islands. Until now. With a uniquely emotional electronic production style every bit as deeply personal and impassioned as his voice or songwriting, James Blake is sketching out his own totally unique place in the musical universe.

When a teenage James first visited the pivotal London dubstep night FWD>> in 2007, he’d already been to drum ’n’ bass nights with school friends, but the music and atmosphere there were unlike anything he’d experienced. A midnight epiphany occured in Plastic People’s Shoreditch cellar which then led, in a few short years, to the James Blake of 2010, a surefooted 22-year-old composer whose extraordinary tracks are not so much breaking down existing musical barriers as leaping over them and creating an entirely new kind of pop that belies its author’s tender age.

Although loosely tethered to the cutting edge of contemporary electronics, James’s songs possess uncommon grace and soulfulness. Whether intended for the dancefloor or, like new single ‘Limit to Your Love’, destined to melt hearts and prick ears, his music is characterised by a playful and arresting honesty, a human touch that, despite his status as a hugely in-demand DJ, naturally aligns him with contemporary artists such as Bon Iver or Laura Marling or the xx.

Yet more than this, it is the shock of the new in James’s music that’s causing real commotion: the sounds, that voice, the silence, the rhythm (or lack of it), the waiting, the tension. You have to know the rules in order to break them with such conviction, and by daring to be different, James stands head and shoulders above his peers. No doubt, you’ll remember where you were when you heard tracks like “Limit to Your Love’ or ‘I Never Learnt to Share’ for the first time.

His self titled debut album, released on February 7th, promises to deliver on the hype and is one to make sure that you defintely do not let pass by.

Rustie – Sunburst EP

If you don’t know about Glasgow golden boy Rustie, then get to know. Since stepping into the scene he has consistently pushed the boundaries of electronic music, fusing elements of hip-hop, funk, electronica, glitch and anything similar you can think of. He’s only had a handful of previous releases, but each has been expertly crafted and all have definitely caused a commotion. Rustie’s also previously worked on remixes for the likes of Modeselektor, Zomby and released a split with Bristol’s Joker – all at an extremely young age.

Seeing Rustie perform live is something else: his appearance at Sonar was absolutely mind-blowing, he’s also played for events with Flying Loyus’ Brainfeeder Crew and Warp Records. If you haven’t seen this boy DJ then make sure you do as soon as possible, because it’s guaranteed to be an impressive display.

The Sunburst EP is an incredible piece of work, taking elements of the electronic side of crunk and hip-hop and building on them to reach a level of intergalactic rock. Starting things off with the epic Neko, which feels like the sound of a live rock band who have been dipped in some shade of purple dubstep and come out the other side with an Atlanta crunk attitude – pretty astonishing. The second track Dragonfly is an altogether more glitchy affair, the video game bleeps and squeaks are coupled with a low riding beat that rolls along in typical head-nodding fashion.

Beast Nite journeys along a more melodic path with well sculpted synth leads and big unforgiving hits of the kit, it really points to Rustie’s evolution into a superb producer. The same can be said for Chew which gets a bit more minimal and delves into more subtle percussive elements, nothing is taken for granted and all the elements are carefully crafted to form a stunner. The closer of the EP, Hyperthrust, is an immense and intricate slow jam that shows off Rustie’s skills and serves as a brilliant end to a spectacular EP. All in all it’s safe that say that Warp have got a good thing going with Rustie, the Sunburst EP drums up a lot of excitement for a full album which is rumoured to be on the cards for next year.

Ariel - Stateless [Ninja Tune]

Stateless return with the first single from their forthcoming album 'Matilda' (their first for Ninja Tune).

Working with producer Damian Taylor (Bjork, The Prodigy), Stateless have taken a more electronic line for the new album and it shows on opener 'Ariel'. While the quality of songwriting remains intact and Chris James’ voice has never sounded better, 'Ariel' finds him laying out the melody over West African guitar lines, crunching snare snaps and thunderous kicks, dubstep sub-bass splatters and glitchtronic interference. It’s an utterly compelling combination, classic songwriting rendered completely new.

The feel of a new direction is reinforced by a series of fantastic remixes and these are what have gotten us most excited. Glasgow powerhouse Rustie gives the original an even more glistening electronic feel and a certain magnificence with his trademark big space-age sound. Up-and-coming bass trio Dark Sky speed things up for a garage-influenced dancefloor banger that keeps building and changing from the start right to the end. Meanwhile, the Midland Inflight remix locks into a Voodoo Ray-ish dub-house groove that emphasises the melancholy of the original - a personal favourite of ours - the mix takes the feel of the orignal and adds to the vibe with splashings of house, techno and garage.

With 'Matilda' due for release in February, 'Ariel' shows a group willing to push at the boundaries and reap the rewards of their bravery, they've clearly got an eye for good electronic music and we're looking toward to what they've got coming in the future.

R1 Ryders – Full Throttle EP

R1 Ryders are relatively new to the scene and a real breath of fresh air; bringing a fast rough and ready new sound that has up until now remained relatively unexplored. This four-track EP, the follow up to their debut Burnout, really does go Full Throttle from start to finish.

The opening track Hydraulic has been a stable in R1 sets for a while now and it’s clear to see why. The track encapsulates their style right from the off – an initial 140BM dubstep feel being ripped to shreds with the up-tempo funky rhythm and synth lead dropping into the mix. It’s an aggressive style that takes an alternative look at the typical funky sound; fast intricate patterns fill Hydraulic to the brim and keep you engaged throughout. This one is guaranteed to send the rave a little crazy, it’s a new sound that fits right in with funky anthems while also not being out of place next to the more typical dubstep tracks.

Intellitek takes R1 Ryders down a more house-oriented path; it’s a deeper house track taking on elements of minimal and techno. It’s a different sound to what I’ve come to expect from seeing the R1 boys in action, but it’s a banger nonetheless. Up next is Karni4 – a return to the jump up funky style that R1 Ryders are more commonly known for. The track rolls along with a big lead synth weaving in and out of the funky percussion. There’s also a cheeky little refix of the track which takes on a slightly more tribal feel with the big synth being dropped and the percussion becoming more reminiscent of tracks by big UK funky hitters like Ill Blu.

Full Throttle is a great debut EP, it’s an altogether refreshing style and each of the tracks are well put together and standout in their own right. The real highlight is definitely Hydraulic but as a whole it’s clear that R1 Ryders have clearly defined their sound and have done so with great skill in their productions. I’d also strongly recommend that you catch them live whenever possible as their sets are pretty mind blowing – hard and fast from start to finish with their own MC, Skeelo, hyping the crowd throughout, so don’t miss out if they’re playing near you.

Scuba – Three Sided Shape EP

Hotflush label boss Scuba releases the second promo from his superb Triangulation album, this release sees the third single Three Sided Shape accompanied by a brand new remix of Latch by Will Saul & Mike Monday.

Three Sided Shape is a deep dubby number with a rolling lead synth and harsh percussive stabs. Scuba really strips things back to leave behind the dark and moody vibes with no unnecessary extras, crafting space and giving room to breath in the mix. The track gives a nod to the deeper styles of dub pioneers like Mala and the DMZ crew, all the while taking a progressive approach and delivering yet another forward thinking slant on the 140bpm side of bass music that’s seen more and more at the forefront.

On the flipside Will Saul & Mike Monday, of the Simple Records and Aus Music imprints, provide a house infused remix of Latch. This version takes on influences of techno, minimal and electro to build on the more dub heavy original and create a bumpy rolling track with the same encompassing atmosphere. The boys manage to keep Scuba’s moody ambience while creating a dance floor ready banger, quite a feat, although one that your more likely to hear at 5AM with a more ‘heads down’ bumping kind of vibe. The mix might not be the most obvious of floor ready remixes, but that’s what keeps it so interesting from start to finish – subtlety at its best.

This latest EP is yet another example of why the Hotflush label is going from strength to strength, they consistently deliver new and exciting releases and never anything stale – we’re always treated to an innovative release taking a new slant on the current trends. With such a mountain of tunes to get lost in the label provides an intelligent breath of fresh air, it’s worth always checking out what’s new on Hotflush and this new release from Scuba is most definitely well worth a purchase.

Mount Kimbie to release new EP

After the release of their widely received and critically acclaimed debut album ‘Crooks and Lovers’, Mount Kimbie – made up of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – have announced their next EP. This new release is to include ‘Blind Night Errand’ and ‘Before I Move Off’ taken from the album, this new 12” is due for release on November 29th via Scuba's Hot Flush Recordings. The EP also includes an alternate version of ‘William’ remixed by Mount Kimbie themselves, alongside a live recording of ‘Maybes’ taken from a recent set at the infamous Berghain club in Berlin. ‘William’ and ‘Maybes’ both originally featured on the promising early ‘Maybes’ EP.

Flying Lotus – Pattern + Grid World

A pioneer of the glitchy hip hop and dubstep crossover sound and head hontcho of the US’ Brainfeeder crew. Flying Lotus is a man with a fair degree of musical heritage, being the great-nephew of John and Alice Coltrane, perhaps some of the reason why he also has an excellent track record when comes to pushing the boundaries of electronic music.

The opening track of the Pattern + Grid World EP Clay draws on retro samples and organic percussion drumming a long a hip hop(ish) beat. The track feels beautifully strange with melodies shuffling all over the place and being complemented by a whole range of weird and wonderful sounds. It almost seems as though FlyLo has chucked out the sequencer in favour of a live burst of energetic, clattering field recordings and electronic instruments. It’s a hugely engaging intro and a skilful set-up for the whole EP.

The second track Kill Your Co-Workers is an instant joy to listen to. The uptempo drums and fast percussive elements don’t feel too harsh and actually when the warm sounds of the synth drop it all feels almost nostalgic. There is a sense of familiarity but at the same time it’s exciting and a world away from being stale. FlyLo has taken all those recognizable video game blips, squeaks and drops and weaved them in and out of the intricate drum pattern to form something that sounds almost Squarepusher-esque. It’s a big track and it’s really good to hear Flying Lotus drop something which ventures a little outside of his hip-hop/dubstep comfort zone.

Next up is Pieface, which sees a return to more familiar FlyLo ground – big electronic sounds with complex goings-on all set to a head nodding rhythm. The track is absolutely full to the brim and sometimes can feel a little overwhelming, but of course that’s exactly why we fell in love with Flying Lotus in the first place. The forth track Time Vampires has a haunting ghostly vibe, the high pitched whistles and shuffling beats sound like they wouldn’t be out of place in an experimental electronica album from the likes of Boards of Canada.

Jurassic Notion M_Theory is almost impossible to pin down; it darts all over the place with an ever changing vibe that straddles glitch, hip hop and some more techno flavours. The percussion holds things together when the leads change from lone droning bass tones to a bit of wobble, with things also getting cut up with the interjecting vocal snippets and strange time signatures. A bit of a personal highlight, Camera Day sounds like it could have soundtracked a secret bonus level on Streets of Rage – maybe it’s just me but I just can’t get enough of those video game synths and stripped back drum patterns.

The final track on this storming EP is Physics For Everyone, a larger than life burst of electro. The harsh lead is backed up by an up-tempo percussive rhythm thrown into the mix with more bleeps and squeaks, all built up into one earth-shattering tune. Even while I’m typing this I’ve kicked the chair away and am bouncing round the room like an absolute madman. Top marks on this one.

As a whole it’s a strong EP, individually the tracks are crafted like FlyLo is the only one who could drop them in a set with the precision and balls to the wall brashness that they deserve. But being seven tracks deep also puts ‘Pattern + Grid World’ in the position where it’s worth a purchase for the home collection, Fans of Flying Lotus will not be disappointed and neither will anyone else who enjoys the experimental sides of electronic music.

Eastern Electrics Bank Holiday Special

August Bank Holiday is always a big one. London suddenly gets all jumpy and everybody just seems to want to party. There’s an endless stream of club nights, carnival warm ups, after-parties and of course Notting Hill Carnival itself. There’s simply too much going on to try to reach, but one event that definitely stands out in the hectic calendar is the Eastern Electrics Warehouse Party on the Sunday.

EE are pros when it comes to throwing parties in totally unique spaces with a twist on the typical clubbing experience. You never end up partying in a standard club as the events are ever changing and evolving, just like the music policy - never constricted by one genre or style and always taking on board new and exciting sounds.

This occasion sees Eastern Electrics back at the amazing space that is Union Street Car Park in South East London: a space which has also previously seen some rave action from the likes of UK bass night Londinium. The line-up is as good as ever, continuing their genre defying style with three rooms curated by the likes of mulletover, Kompakt, Dirtybird Records and Resident Advisor. The line-up includes a whole bunch of heavy hitters from across the boards of techno, house and bass. We are treated to sets from the likes of; Justin Martin, Michael Mayer, Joy Orbison, Sketchy, Scuba, Wighnomy Brothers, Jo Saurbier, Claude Vonstroke and more.

The excitement sets in as I’m greeted by the sight of the giant arches which are housing the party, with each of the three stages hosting an arch to themselves. The Eastern Electrics crew have made superb use of the space, the various arches each providing their own use; bar areas, cloakroom, chill-out spot and of course the stages themselves. The vibe is good as soon as I’m in, people are smiling and everyone appears to be having it right off. From the start everything is organised efficiently and handled professionally, no mad queues for the entrance, a good cloakroom, great bar staff, loud systems with superb sound quality and so on. It’s a lesson in the proper way to hold an event, all of which inevitably has such an effect on the crowd and the overall feel of the night.

Once through the entrance and after a little wander to scope things out there’s just enough time to grab a quick drink before heading to the Dirtybird room to see Justin Martin begin his set. Things get off to a good start - the room is packed but we all still have plenty of room to shake a leg. Justin’s set rolls through with the kind of bumping techno goodness that we’ve come to expect from the Dirtybird family. Bleeps and squeaks of minimal tech, tech house and Detroit flavours are all delivered with a slight leaning on the more bass heavy side of things.

As the night moves along things just keep getting better. We’re treated to an expertly crafted set of classic house and garage sounds selected by man of the moment Joy Orbison. Although we’ve seen Joy tear up a fair few dancefloors since the release of his club smash Hyph Mngo, he definitely pushed the boat out at EE – beginning with classic house grooves and journeying into 2-step shuffles and lesser-known garage bangers before climaxing with powerful upfront garagey bass tunes and unreleased gems from his Goldrums label. Next up is Hotflush Recordings bossman Scuba who’s Third Sided Shape EP is due to drop any minute now, and who never fails to deliver the goods. Whether playing his residency at Berlin’s infamous Berghain or playing in a carpark in South East London his sets are consistently flawless - twisting and turning through the evolving sounds of dubstep and techno.

The penultimate set of the night comes from San Fran’s own Claude VonStroke. Yet again he whips the whole place into an absolute frenzy with his trademark dirty techno, minimal and bassy tech house. The only drawback perhaps being the lack of room to get down, with virtually the whole room wall to wall with ravers trying to find an inch of space to groove in. Finally Michael Mayer steps up with a rolling procession of minimal, techno and tech-house, the crowd nodded and swayed with each track but it didn’t seem to quite go off to the same degree as some of the earlier sets of the night. Perhaps a little harsh, but the repetitive minimal wasn’t quite the ticket for the 4AM crew.

If you’ve never been to an Eastern Electrics party then make sure you get a ticket for the next one. They know how to do things properly and you are guaranteed a big line-up of forward thinking music and genre bending artists. EE isn’t on that often but when it is, it’s 100% worth the wait. So we’ll see you at the next one – I’ll be front left next to the Funktion One...

Pariah – Safehouses EP

Belgian label R&S has an extremely rich history and has been responsible for putting out some of the best house and techno over a span of nearly twenty years. They have released records for some of the most influential electronic music artists, including the likes of Aphex Twin, Model 500, Juan Atkins and Dave Angel. With the re-launch of the label in 2008 we were treated to a number of re-mastered albums and in Sept, the first new single for years - the massive Eyes Wide Open / Ingonito from Radio Slave. October 2008 saw the long awaited release of the In Order To Dance compilation - a collection of the label’s finest moments - with added remixes from the likes of Audion, Prins Thomas, Tom Middleton, Optimo and Boyz Noise.

This year has seen R&S venture into the world of UK bass music, yet they have continued to maintain the extremely high standards of other releases and have also continued seeking out the most exciting of electronic artists. Most notably we saw the epic CMYK from an extremely talented James Blake get an airing and now Pariah gets his second release on the label, the beautiful Safehouses EP.

The opener for the EP, The Slump, begins life with an old electro feel and a nod to classic house sounds. The percussion is warm and unobtrusive which aids the claps in building up and up into the stunning bass drop which absolutely rips the subs a new one. The tune rolls on with a floating ambient feel taking on board the vintage electro vibe intertwined with a garagey vocal and dub heavy bass.

Prism is a track which will doubtlessly be pricking a fair few ears across the board, it’s immediately obvious that this is something special. An acid house inspired bassline infects the track from the start and effortlessly lends itself to accompany the half-stepping beats and subtle blends of electronica and garage. The big female vocal enters in the breakdown and the tune then steps up to be elevated to a genuine highlight of the year so far – a complete club smasher this one, guaranteed to connect with the whole crowd.

The third track on the EP, Railroad, heads down a slightly more traditional pathway with the beats being pretty characteristic of the current garage sounds seen throughout thescene. However, it’s still an excellent track and definitely shines a light in doing modern garage extremely well. The 2-step beats are intercut with the classic jungle break and the synth melodies offer up a beautiful lead. Next up is Crossed Out which continues the garage feel although without the edge of the other tracks on the EP and does seem to fall to the wayside a little when compared to the other tracks.

Last up we have C-Beams and Safehouses, the former being a journey into the glitchy hip-hop sounds common to producers like Flying Lotus or Blue Daisy, and the latter track is a gorgeous field recording ambience with subtle synth lead changes and an stunning end to what is an amazing EP, showcasing the talent of one of the UK’s most promising new producers

Toddla T – Sky Surfing EP

Toddla T is an artist known for his jump up electro that takes on a fair degree of dancehall influence. Originally hailing from Sheffield, Toddla started DJing out from an extremely young age (hence the name) and is now found regularly hosting shows on Radio 1 and DJing worldwide. His recent signing to Ninja Tune has given rise to talks of a soon to be released album. In the meantime there’s his first outing on the label – the Sky Surfing EP.

The EP features the original - a collab with Jamaican reggae dancehall artist Wayne Marshall, most probably the result of Toddla’s recent trips to the island, as well as remixes from Benga, Douster, DJ Q and Ross Orton. It’s a well put together package; the original is a characteristic burst of energetic electro and jump up dancehall. Right from the word go your thrown into a riotous mix of acid bass, carnival vocal samples and Marshall’s catchy chorus. It’s undoubtedly infectious, with piano house breakdowns and clap fuelled build ups that are bound to send the club into a frenzy and smash the dancefloor.

Benga provides the dubstep crew with a bass heavy version, featuring harsh claps and the sub wobbles that take the frequencies right down to shake any system, it’s a pretty standard dubstep re-work and doesn’t really go out the way to do anything new. The remix is clearly not Benga’s best work, but it does the job effectively and makes good use of the Wayne Marshall vocal. Bringing the pure UK vibes of garage and bassline DJ Q’s remix bounces along with a rolling beat and lively bass whomps, its straight bassline with no surprises and so kind of fails to stand out on the record as a whole.

The Douster remix is definitely the highlight if the EP, taking on board well crafted percussion and teasing until the big ol’ drop. It’s on a more funky tip with subtle changes and making expert use of the original parts to maintain the carnival flavour, it’s all about the deep building bass, extra sample snippets and the contagious drums. Lastly we get Ross Orton’s take; weaving between electro and breaks the remix feels as though it doesn’t quite know it’s place on the EP. As such it seems a little surplus to requirement, being the last track by this point it feels a little like we’ve heard it done before.

Although the release as a whole is nothing spectacular, expect to hear this riddim in its various versions rinsed for the forth coming months, the Douster remix has already been heard doing the rounds. Sky Surfing is definitely worth a purchase for that version alone, get a hold of a copy if you want to infuse a lickle dancehall vibe into your next set.

Skream – Outside The Box (Tempa)

One of the first records that really got me hooked on all things Dubstep was Skream’s debut – Skream! This album was unlike anything I had heard before, and coupled with Burial’s debut I’d sight it as having a seriously significant effect on my musical tastes from that moment onwards. Since the first album I, and many others, have eagerly anticipated the follow up. It’s been four years in the making and has a lot to live up to.

So when I received a copy of ‘Outside The Box’ I was pretty excited to see what Skream had delivered. Unfortunately, as a whole, I have to say that I’ve been a little disappointed with the results. Don’t get me wrong there are some amazing tracks on ‘Outside The Box’, it’s just that on first listen the album doesn’t deliver the same heavy impact felt on the debut. This might in part be due to the move away from the reggae dub feel of the first album, making use of collabs with artists like Warrior Queen, and towards a more commercially viable sound, collaborating with La Roux and Murs.

I’ve heard that Skream aimed to bring the ‘rave’ back to UK dance music, so with this new album he takes on influences from the sound of those infamous illegal parties of the early 90’s held under the London’s orbital. Throughout the album you do get those characteristic ‘hands in the air’ moments and you do get a definite feel of what Skream is trying to accomplish, it’s just that it doesn’t seem to quite work.

Looking at individual tracks it’s obvious that Skream is an amazing producer, the quality of each track and the way they’re crafted is second to none. The opening of ‘Perferated’ is genuinely epic, it’s a big synth filled track with no beat and most definitely gets your juices flowing for the body of tracks to follow. The second tune ‘8 Bit Baby’, which features American rapper Murs, doesn’t follow on from the opener in the same impressive way. It simply feels lacking in emotion, if the aim is to ‘get ravey’ this track doesn’t fit the bill.

I don’t want it to seem as though I don’t like the album, because I genuinely do. There are some really stand out tracks that can be listened to again and again with ease. ‘How Real’ is a definite highlight, the computerised vocal and up-tempo beat coupled with the building of tension had me dancing round the room. Other highlights include ‘Listening To Records On My Wall’, taking a classic jungle break and transforming it to fit the rave-heavy feel of the album, and the absolutely stunning ‘A Song For Lenny’, a grand orchestral piece of music which undoubtedly had a lot poured into it. Skream closes the album with ‘The Epic Last Song’, another nod to classic jungle which really does what it says on the tin.

As a whole the album should be approached as a record to be listened to at home, in the car, on the bus etc…It’s not an album of club bangers, the notable exception in that case being ‘Wibbler’, the tracks are skilfully put together and the production quality on each one shines through. The goal that Skream had in mind when putting ‘Outside The Box’ is evidently clear – to create an epic journey taking on board the past sounds that have really influenced him, I just can’t help feeling that all in all the album falls short.

Deviation is Benji B’s long-running midweek bass bash that has been a staple of the beats & bass scene for a while now and always features eclectic line-ups with the best selectors from across the spectrum.

Over the course of three years, the night has seen the likes of Madlib, Floating Points, Dâm-Funk and Actress all grace the decks. offering their own take on house, bass and techno. Benji has recently made the move from 1Xtra to take over Mary Ann Hobbs’ Experimental Show on Radio 1; further cementing his importance in showcasing what bass music has to offer and as a lynchpin of the U.K scene in general.

Deviation’s third birthday celebrations take place over two nights; the first party took place earlier this month at the night’s home, Gramaphone, and featured the US’ turntable genius J.Rocc. Tonight’s second party, held at South London’s Cable, is set to maintain the party’s diverse music policy with sets from Hyperdub boss Kode 9 and Detroit techno legend Theo Parish. So with a line-up like that, it’s only right that we went down to check it out.

Getting to Cable for around midnight, we’re in time to catch the final hour of the main man Benji B’s set. Walking into the main room we’re instantly greeted by Lone’s superb Pineapple Crush; filled with deep house vibes, cutting 808 percussion and the whole crowd already going for it. The track gets the first pull-up of the night. Benji moves forward with the set, taking us on a journey through deep and soulful house, the deeper side of UK funky, some more industrial house and techno and all that falls between. The whole set is pretty much flawless from start to finish and it’s pure bliss to listen to a full hour-and-a-half, his flow not confined by genre even in the slightest, consistently weaving through different sounds and influences.

Benji mixes up bangers from the likes of Lil Silva, Breach and Ramadanman with deep and soulful cuts that have all the heads asking for the I.D. The energy in the room never fades; everyone is peaking right from the start and can’t get enough of it. As Benji closes on more of a dubstep tip we look around the room to find absolutely everyone is grinning from ear to ear.

Next up is Kode 9, a man with who needs no introduction when it comes to his influence on bass music. Kode delves straight in on an epic UK funky vibe, weaving through scene staples before dropping a mind blowing remix of Hardrive’s classic house cut Deep Inside; to say things went off does not do it justice. Deep house reminiscent of Kerri Chandler is expertly blended with variations of 2-step and 4/4; we even get a garage remix of Soul 2 Soul’s Back To Life. The set moves forward with more experimental works from the likes of DVA, with Just Vybe getting a well deserved wheel, and then hits grime territory with instrumentals from Terror Danjah and co.

Moving from the main room for a little break and to hit the bar, we enter room two where Benny Blanco, Moxie and Alex Nut are each dropping sets throughout the night. Although we only popped in every now and then, the second room was still delivering the goods. First time we venture in for a drink we hear Benny Blanco giving the London club a taste of straight sunshine house – dropping the anthem Follow Me by Aly Us. Later on, the next time we reach room two the Nonsense crew (Alext Nut & Moxie) are delving into the sounds of Chicago house, elements of Detroit Techno and we even get to hear MJ Cole’s latest offering, From The Drop, a collab with grime godfather Wiley.

Heading back to room one, it’s time for the final set of the night from Mr. Theo Parish. Kicking the 2-hour set off is what can only be described as an awe-inspiring intro with a real slow jam of beautiful wavy synths and drippings of old ‘70s disco and funk. Theo himself is an absolute madman behind the decks, constantly jumping about and hyping the crowd. He just seems so excited to play. As things progress, the set moves into some downtempo techno with hints of the industrial sounds of Detroit. We get more vocal-fixated house tracks, disco re-edits and classic funk breaks all pounding on the system, so much so that at points it seems the EQ is being ridden to the very limit and the speakers are clipping.

It’s truly a sight to behold and I urge everyone to go see Theo in action if you ever have the opportunity. We stick around ‘til the wee hours and make a move just before the end of his set. It’s safe to say the Deviation 3^rd Birthday was a highlight of the year, showcasing the highly-welcomed current trend for nights straddling genre lines and how London remains at the forefront of electronic music. A shining example of how house, techno, garage and whatever other pigeonholes you can think all blend perfectly together.

First Sonar 2011 announcement

The first two names announced for the Sónar line-up 2011 have been announced, both Steve Reich and Magnetic Man are confirmed for the one of the world's best festivals.

Steve Reich, the key composer who stirred up the foundations of contemporary music, comes face to face in the Sónar Barcelona 2011 line-up with Magnetic Man, who will perform both in Sónar Barcelona and Galicia. The British trio, consisting of the producers and Djs Benga, Skream and Artwork, is considered the first group providing dubstep for the masses, and threatens to dynamite the star system of dance music, the true pop culture of our age.

As Stockhausen, Terry Riley, Kraftwerk, Suicide, Roxy Music and Chic did at previous editions of the festival, Steve Reich provides the Sónar Barcelona artistic programme with an essential perspective on its origins in order to create a better understanding of the present: who was responsible for the renewal and revolution of genres and how, and whose work (sometimes neglected or misunderstood at the time) paved the way for new artists that continue to be inspired by those sources today.

Magnetic Man could easily be an example of a group that after the mutation of the genres with their roots in drum'n'bass, house, grime and more recently, dubstep, base their musical approach on ideas that decades later, remain inspired by the rhythms and structures that emerged from the minimalist revolution brought about by geniuses like Steve Reich.

Steve Reich will bring the curtain up on Sónar Barcelona, he is a key figure in repetitive minimalism and takes centre stage at the inaugural concert of Sónar 2011 in Barcelona's L'Auditori. The North American artist will be performing accompanied by bcn 216, L'Auditori resident instrumental group, and the British vocal group Synergy Vocals.

Steve Reich is considered by specialist music critics as one of the most significant influences on music in the last half century. He is also a benchmark for many artists from different scenes and disciplines, from experimental rock to the pioneers of electronica, via hip-hop.

Sonar 2011 is set to take place on the 16th, 17th and 18th of June in Barcelona and the 2nd edition of sister festival Sónar Galicia will take place on 17th and 18th of June in A Coruña.

Starkey - Space Traitor Vol 1 EP

Starkey has been making waves for a while now with his own unique warped hip hop and dubstep sounds as well as a host production work for other artists. This talented young artist has consistently pushed the boat with his releases; never settling and always exploring new territory with bigger and bolder work. It's safe to say this latest offering follows along the same forward thinking path and will be the first of two new EPs to drop.

Space Traitor Volume 1 take's Starkey's trademark intergalactic sound and pushes it further to new levels and higher definition;The opening atmospheric sounds of the EP’s lead track, Robot Hands, give way to juddering beats and scything bass. The digi- industrial feel continues on the more minimal Playing With Fire, complete with glorious skyscraping synths, and intense head-nodder Holodeck where an elephantine bassline underpins crazed, looped strings. Demonstrating his increasing range and versatility as a producer, Starkey then depressurizes the cabin for the blissful, free-floating Paradise. The song features the angelic voice of previous collaborator and Brighton-based vocalist Anneka. The final Starkey composition is the shimmering, widescreen Lenses; however, the release also comes with six additional and adventurous remixes and a short story written by Starkey which acts as a loose prequel to the EP’s music.

Born Paul J. Geissinger, and known to friends as PJ, Starkey’s ongoing mission to the outer reaches of the sonic universe has so far included two albums – 2008’s Ephemeral Exhibits and this year’s Ear Drums AndBlack Holes, various singles, and remixes for Tinie Tempah, Kano, Tempa T and Foals. Whilst the most obvious bracket for his output is the burgeoning British post dubstep/bass music scene, Starkey lives and works just outside of Philadelphia. This geographical anomaly coupled with the emotion and depth of his painstakingly constructed arrangements and work within classical music helps to explain his fresh and unique output which is equally at home on dancefloors and headphones.

Space Traitor Vol 1 is available from 6th December both digitally and on 12” vinyl which will includes a free 12 track CD version of the release. Vol 2 is due out in early 2011 and both installments will be released by London-based independent label Civil Music, home to dEbruit, Drums Of Death, Reso and others.

The Phantom EP

The last two Senseless releases have been all about tropical music from tropical places, whether that’s tribal drums from Venezuela (Zarbak EP) or roots meets future from Jamaica (Max Romeo – Protest EP). For the label's last release of the year they have continued their search across the globe for the best international bass music and have found something unexpected: music with warm and tropical energy from a very cold place.

Senseless introduce us to 'The Phantom' aka 23 year old Bartosz Kruczynski from Warsaw, Poland. This is his debut EP but in the recent months we have noticed his sterling remix work for countrymen Supra1 on Trouble & Bass or his slot on Top Billin’s PL Funky compilation.

The Phantom’s sound is built around a rhythmic template that shape-shifts somewhere between skeletal UK Funky, speaker shaking R&B and deep house wired up to glacial synths and deep, deep sub bass. He’s got a sound that’s all his own, doubtless the result of interpreting UK bass music from a distance, free to experiment and pull together a diverse set of influences ranging from Altern-8 and Mr Fingers to Deep Teknologi and Jam City. His sound journeys a path that we are seeing alot in the bass music scene; echoes of the past reverberating with new school values, the sounds of classic house mutated with contemporary elements of it's younger, more bass heavy cousins.

The EP features three original tracks; Night Game, with shades of classic 90s R&B bouncing along with the kind of synthetic marimbas that make you wish Brandy would jump on a lay some vocals down. There’s also the lushly orchestrated Connect The Dots, which balances the rough and the smooth with precision. Lastly Girl completes the trilogy with punchy, minimal production foregrounds and a lush old-school piano riff matched up with tuff carnival drums.

The EP also features remixes from some of the very hottest producers of the moment. Brenmar is currently making tidal waves stateside with his blend of hip-hop, juke and UK bass; here he rewires Girl with an insistent juke style clap, splices in some new vocals and lays down some seriously crisp drum work. UK house hero Hackman gets his Bladerunner strings on for a deep reimagining of Night Game, keeping things on a two step flex that switches things up from his recent 4x4 output. Finally Phantom’s Polish pal Zeppy Zep turns in a superb remix of Night Game, switching up somewhere in the middle from brooding Zomby style digi-garage to carnival house.

This is an excellent debut EP from a seriously talented young producer with a very bright future ahead of him. Senseless have really done a top job in putting together the full EP; with a great selection of original tracks backed up by some equally good remixes.

This EP delivers four tracks of futuristic sounds to tug the heartstrings and move the body; all infused with longing and love. Aswell as support from Giles Peterson, Eliphino can count Martyn and Alex Nut as big fan of his work.

Throughout 2010 Eliphino has been working hard, honing his craft and making a name for himself which has led to publications from Platfrom (who invited him to play in their infamous boileroom alongside Mosca, Rockwell and Thristian BPM) to XLR8R marking him out as one to watch. The Undivided Whole EP is an assault on your senses and emotions. ‘You’ll Know’ and ‘L.F. (I Know)’ are two of the hottest tracks to come out of the scene this year, merging the sounds of Garage, House, Bass and 2- Step.‘Condensation’ is a straight up house monster, ready to ruin any dancefloor.

Talen is made up of four Swiss brothers and this family unit previously delivered a couple of EP's featuring heavyweights Sizzla, Cutty Ranks and underground legends Oddatee and Sensational. BBC1's host Mary Anne Hobbs took notice and dropped the debut on her show - positioning Talen amidst the cream of the Bass scene. Instead of basking in the limelight and peacefully riding out the wave, the boys holed up in the studio for another year to create an even thicker package -

The Comic Book EP is the end result and features the vocal talent of Lady Saw,Turbulence and Ward 21. Remix duty is handled by the likles of: Stereotyp, Kalbata, Robot Koch and more. Deviating slightly from their usual upbeat party tunes, ‘Fevers Worse’ introduces a darker and more intense side to their repertoire, with its rapidly pulsing, intoxicating electronic beat and looping vocals. Hotflush Recordings has consistently served up some of the most interesting and foward-thinking slices of House, Techno and Bass. This year the label has put out amazing releases from the likes of Mount Kimbie, Scuba and Sepalcure. This new EP from George FitzGerald is the follow-up single to his summer debut “The Let Down” & “Weakness”. Due for release in mid-January 2011, this much-touted single is seeing the light of day after its inclusion in Scuba’s groundbreaking SUB:STANCE mix compilation on Ostgut Ton earlier this year.

Here we see George reaching into the brighter side of dubstep and garage styles, achieving a mood that is both blissful and emotive. Subtle percussive elements, bright synth work and chopped vocals make for a deep garage workout that's most defintely going to be heard across dancefloors keeping heads down ravers happy in 2011. On the flipside, Scuba gives the original mix a churning techno re-flex under his SCB guise. It's an industrial deep bit of techno which takes the original in a whole new direction, breaking down with pulsing melodies and then thumping back to earth with a pound of the kick drum.

The Don't You EP is yet another testament to George FitzGearald's talent as a producer and cements the fact that this young Londoner is definitely one to watch in the new year and the same can be said for Hotflush as a label - keep your eyes on both as 2011 is sure to be a big year.

With the year drawing to a close there's inevitably a lot of 'best of 2010' lists floating about, so we thought we'd jump in and have our say on the tracks that have got us excited this year. These are the top five tracks that, when we've heard them dropped in the club, us, and everyone inside, has absolutely lost it every time.

Ramadanman - Work Them [Swamp 81]

2010 was a seriously big year for the Ramadanman and Work Them is testament to why. Rama's tracks have had such a huge appeal across the board, getting played peak-time in sets from big names in everything from techno to funky. It's just big.

Breach - Fatherless [PTN]

One of the highlights of the year for us was hearing Jackmaster drop this monster at Sonar, it absolutely went OFF and has done every time it's been played since. Fatherless has been rinsed pretty hard this year, and rightly so.

Girl Unit - Wut [Night Slugs]

Truly an epic dance-floor track with 100% guaranteed wheels. At every rave we went to this year that dropped this tune, it was wheeled as soon as that first drop hit.

Lil Silva - Seasons [Night Slugs]

There was a white label of Seasons knocking about last year and as a result it has been rinsed pretty hard, but it still destroys the dance and with a proper release through Night Slugs on the Night Skanker EP in 2010, this had to be in the list.

The Bug - Skeng (Autechre Remix) [Ninja Tune]

This track is strong! Although the original Skeng was in it's own right amazing and released a while ago, with this remix from Autechre coming out recently on Ninja Tune it was once again getting played everywhere - sending the whole floor into a frenzy.

Deadboy's remix of Creep due for release

Mothboy - Yield EP Review and Mix Download

With his latest release, the Yield EP, dropping on Drawn Recordings in January 2011, Mothboy has given us a mix download and preview of his upcoming EP.

Mothboy is a fairly elusive artist; while he has been making music for some time now we still don't know an awful lot about him. His most famous works have been released through German electronic imprint Ad Noiseam, where he has unleashed three albums and two 12” singles that have enabled him to carve out a pretty unique place in the world of bass heavy electronic music. His finely honed production skills have also graced labels such as Some Bizzare, Acroplane and disco_r.dance. Mothboy's work has also earned him a clutch of high profile remixes for artists as varied as Enduser, Starkey and 65daysofstatic, and past critical acclaim has come from ex-Radio 1 queen of Dubstep, Mary Ann Hobbs.

This latest release from Mothboy, the Yield EP, incorporates all the hallmarks of this innovative London producer - heavy bass exploration, intricate rhythms, dance floor grooves, beautiful vocals, delicate textural touches, and the unique jazzy feel that permeates his sound. Yield comprises three choice cuts, influenced by everything from UK garage to house and techno.

The opener on the EP, 'Maximse Yer Yields', begins with a beautifully melodic build before dropping into a dark bassline and haunting vocal. The track has deeper garage feel but defintely takes on elements of techno and some of the features from dubstep sounds by the likes of Mala and co. The second track, 'Medusa', features vocalist Sarah Sylvan who delivers a superb performance in putting an interesting twist on this slice of dubstep. With a rolling bassline, stabbing chords, and elegant vocal, it is defintely going to sound big in the club. Finally we get 'Others' which heads back down the garage and techno path, it's a deep and dark yet delicate track with top quality production and a forward thinking style.

Fancy Mike hails from Minnesota in the mid-west and this debut album is in fact the first opportunity we've had to get to know his work in detail. Getting a release via new label King Deluxe, 'Madison Square Gardner' takes us on a journey through sub-heavy glitch hip hop and synth lead dubstep - Mike's work appears to be laden with interesting samples and sound design which goes some way beyond the usual.

The opener 'Ramachandran' is a space age melodic hip hop instrumental with wonky synth lines and carefully crafted sampling which echoes the sounds of electronica from the likes of Boards of Canada. 'Ivy League Smack' exhibits a love for sub-bass and again shows off Mike's excellent synth skills as rolling hip hop beats are backed up by the industrial chimes and rippling hats. A real highlight of the album, 'Lazer Opera' kicks off with an echoing choir and a subtle plucking synth before the bass begins to rumble and then... it drops, and computer game synths and deep bass leads the way through this futuristic neck-snapping joint. Woii talks with BD1982

This Tokyo based producer was first brought to our attention last year when we first heard the Trails EP that he released on Starkey's Seclusiasis label, the EP featured eight banging tracks in total with the Jam City mix of the 'Trails' being the one that really got us all hot and bothered. Since then we've had our eye on this talented artists and the tracks he's since been putting up on SoundCloud, all of which we would highly recommend that you go listen to.

We recently caught up with BD1982 to have a chat, get to know him a little better and to find out what's he's got in store for the future.

Oh, and he also very kindly put together an exclusive mix for us featuring some of his own upcoming material as well as new cuts from Brey, French Fries, Kink and loads more.

Give us a little background info; where you’re from and how you first got into electronic music?

I grew up in New Jersey just outside of New York City. I got into jungle pretty heavy when I was about 15 after listening to a decent amount of industrial bands…Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral is still an incredible album to go back and listen to every now and again.

You’re tracks definitely have a ‘bass music’ focus akin to much of the stuff currently coming out of the UK underground, is that fair to say? How did you get into this kind of sound?

Without a doubt…I was always a huge fan of UK bass music from jungle to UK garage, grime, dubstep to where things are at now. On top of that growing up listening to a lot of hip hop, reggae and dancehall definitely influenced the kind of sound I always try to achieve.

What kind of production set-up do you work with?

I make pretty much everything on and within an MPC2000XL. There’s an Access Virus module and Juno 106 hooked up just by MIDI cables to the MPC and I record and mix with Pro Tools. Gonna definitely move into Logic this year for mixing though.

Any of your productions so far that you can pin down as favourites?

I'm pretty excited about the material on the 'VHS Nite EP' that's gonna be out next month on Diskotopia, I feel like I'm getting closer to putting down musically exactly what's in my mind but still not completely there. I feel like the most important thing is to keep making new material and have fun with the grind.

You’re currently based in Japan, how do you find the scene out there?

The bass music scene in Tokyo is still pretty small but there’s a great variety of people who are always pushing to make things more exciting. I’ve been lucky enough to DJ with and work alongside a lot of really talented people who are doing styles across the board so there’s undoubtedly a ton of potential for the sound in general to spread.

We hear that you’re going to be visiting the UK in March, any plans while you’re here?

So far the plans are to link with some friends, check out some clubs, and just hang out really. Gig wise I’ve got a night booked in Paris on the 26^th with Brey and Turnsteak. Of course I’d definitely like to play in the UK as well!

You’ve had recent releases on Starkey’s Seclusiasis label, how did you guys team up?

I became friends with Dev79 after moving back to the States from Kyoto in 2006 and met Starkey soon after that. I played at some Seclusiasis parties and joined the crew a little later on. The plans for releases always came naturally after sending tunes over and seeing what would work out at that time which has always been really cool.

We’ve seen you team up with various artists on some great collabs recently, anyone you’re keen to work with in the future?

I think it’s always cool to get together with other producers and work on making some tunes, I’m pretty open to whoever would be interested in working with me to be honest. I’d definitely like to get some more vocal collaborations happening this year, with someone like Natalie Storm for example.

Any artists you’re particularly feeling at the moment?

Brey, Slackk, Sam Tiba, A Taut Line, Visionist, Starkey, Boddika, Optimum, Ikonika, Jam City, Nochexxx, Dro Carey, Young L, and of course much more!

You’ve also recently started up a label right? Tell us a bit about it and the thoughts behind it.

Yeah I started a label called Diskotopia with Matt Lyne who records under the name A Taut Line. The general idea is to put out music that we both really support and are excited about but there’s no clear cut guidelines as to what kind of identity the label should have for the most part. Hopefully I’d like to see it progress into something where the listener has no idea what to expect style wise from a release but won’t be let down by what they hear.

What’s the release schedule looking like?

The first release is A Taut Line & Hong Kong in the 60s collaboration EP called ‘Unwoken’ that has remixes from Dominatrix, Royalty, LDFD and myself. That’s gonna be released March 14^th and two weeks later there’s a new EP from me coming out called ‘VHS Nite.’ Ikonika & Optimum, Starkey, Slackk and A Taut Line did remixes which I’m still so psyched about. Around June we’re going to release a compilation with three original tunes and 3 remixes from a total of six different producers that’s gonna be crazy.

What can we expect form one of your DJ sets / performances?

In general my DJ sets are a bit more upfront and aware of the dancefloor than the vibe from some of my own productions and mixtapes. I like to try and span a range of styles to keep things interesting based on the kind of party it is.

What have you got in store for the coming months?

Putting the work into Diskotopia to make it the best it can be, also besides travelling to the UK in March, finishing up an EP for B.YRSLF Division in Paris, putting out a single on Made In Glitch, work on finishing up a Makumba Sound EP for Seclusiasis with 100mado, some Street Bass Anthems productions and playing out when possible either in Japan or wherever else is possible!

Mixcloud's Best of 2010

Mixcloud launch their "Best of 2010" today, in association with Serato and Juno Download. They have charted the most tracklisted artists and tracks across some 100,000 radio shows, DJ mixes and playlists, uploaded by over 35,000 "Cloudcasters" throughout 2010, as well as the most popular radio shows/mixes and uploaders on the site over the past 12 months.

These pages are a unique snapshot of the past 12 months of music. Unlike charts made up of sales data, or editorially driven best-of lists, Mixcloud's charts reflects the collective wisdom of us; the listeners.

The results are pretty interesting. James Blake leads the way with "CMYK" claiming the top track of 2010, getting played by the likes of Drowned in Sound, Dan Le Sac, Foreign Beggars, Chris Coco and SBTRKT.

The top artists chart pits the old with the new, demonstrating that the classics aren't disappearing from record boxes anytime soon. This unique chart is topped by Skream and sees the likes of Michael Jackson and Daft Punk side by side with Flying Lotus and Ramadanman.

The "Cloudcast" and "Cloudcaster" charts showcase how far the London based Mixcloud has come since it's launch in September 2009, boasting the likes of DJ Premier, Zero 7, Hot Chip, Mary Anne Hobbs, Bestival and Fabric as regular contributors.

Free download of Donaeo's Where's Da Mandem At

After getting it's first airing on DJ Q's 1Xtra show and getting a deserved five or so wheels, Donaeo's 'Where's Da Mandem At' is now up for free download. Produced by Burga Boy, the track is huge and one that will undoubtable be tearing the club down.

The story goes that Q dropped the Burga Boy instrumental in Fabric and when Donaeo heard it he ran straight to the booth to get an I.D. Within the next couple of days Donaeo had laid down the vocal and 'Where's Da Mandem At' was born.

Numbers drop Ill Blu's Meltdown EP

Ill Blu have been making amazing Funky for some time now and with releases last year like the Bellion / Dragon Pop 12" they were defintely going to be making waves in 2011. The ever prominent Numbers label are set to release the duo's next EP, the Meltdown EP, on valentine's day...so make sure you cop that as I bet your girl will love a slice of bass weighted Funky on vinyl.

You can check out the three track sampler of the release below, as you'll hear these tracks have been doing the rounds for a while - being featured in sets from the likes of Jackmaster, Oneman and Bok Bok - so we're excited to see this finally getting put out.

T. Williams remixes Fatherless

Deep Teknologi's T.Williams had a pretty amazing year last year and is set to blow up in a big way this year - his track 'Heartbeat' with vocals by Terri Walker was one of the biggest tunes we've heard in a while and his mix for XLR8R featuring virtually all his own producitons was just huge.

Now Williams serves up his own take on probably the biggest trak of 2010 - Breach's club smasher 'Fatherless'. The mix is a chopped and stripped back version that is destined to snap to necks in every place it's dropped.

Local Action X Grizzly Free Single

The boys at Local Action and Grizzly labels have teamed up to remix eachothers work and give it away as a free split single.

Two of the labels’ core artists, New York’s Contakt and Liverpool’s Melé, helm a side each, remixing each other’s latest singles. Contakt takes the ice-cold house of Mele’s ‘Trappin’ [Grizzly] and slows things down, resulting in a fat, synth-led bouncer, while Melé pitches up Contakt’s ‘Rhodophyta’ [Local Action] close to juke tempo, with scuttling drum machines and a serious, serious drop. Divided in terms of tempo, both tracks share a fiery, red aesthetic that makes them perfect sparring partners.

The Numbers DJ has finally revealed the tracklist for his forth coming mix for the FabricLive CD series, FabricLive 57 sees Jackmaster delivering his trademark genre-bending selection of house, techno, funky and all in between. After his stint with the Red Bull Music Academy and a stirling set at Sonar last year where he wowed the international crowd Jaackmaster went on to win DJ Magazine's 'Breakthrough DJ of The Year' award, which we felt was thoroughly deserved.

You can check out the tracklist for Fabric Live 57 below. In other Numbers news; the label now have their own fortnightly show on London's Rinse FM - April 19th sees the first show and will be hosted by Spencer and Jackmaster.
