How to Use Checkdisk Utility

Checkdisk can check for any drive related errors like badsectors,etc.

1) Press "win" +"r" key.

2) Type "CMD" and Press "Enter".

3) Type " chkdsk drivename " (c:, d: or e:) and Press "Enter".

Apart from checking a drive for errors checkdisk utility can also be used

to rectify drive errors, if the drive shows "Open With" when you click on

it.

To use checkdisk to rectify drive realted errors we use the /f parameter

eg: chkdsk d: /f

Note: chkdsk does not run on system drive, it will run when the system

boots up.

How to increase "Virtual Memory"

Virtual Memory also page file is used as memory but the difference is that it is not static. Means that you can manually increase and decrease the size of virtual memory and thereby increase the speed of your computer.

Right Click on My Computer
Select Properties -- Advanced tab
Click on the the first Settings button
Again select the advanced tab
Click on Change button
Select Custom size and type the size you want(in kbs) and click on set

Explorer "Cannot Delete __________. Access is Denied" Error

Often when we try to delete a file it says "Cannot Delete __________. Access is Denied". Possibly because it is in use . It could be solved using the following procedure. But if its a powerful virus it may not work.

Press "Ctrl + Alt + Del" to open task manager.
Right click on the file you were trying to delete in the applications tab and select go to process.
It takes you to the desired process in "Processes" tab.
Right click on the process and click on "End Process Tree" & confirm(Yes).
Go to the file you were going to delete and press "Shift + Del" and "Enter".

Open "My Computer" and click on "search" button.
On "Search" tab select "advanced options" and check on "include hidden files" checkbox.
In "What size is it " and select the "Medium(less than mb) and press "Enter".
After you get the results. Select " -> Tools -> Folder Options". Here Select "Show Hidden Files & Folders ".Remove the check from "Hide extensions for known file types " and from "Hide protected operating system files" and click on "Apply -> OK".
In the "search text box" type ".exe" (all or part of the filename) and press "Enter".
Now by holding down the "Ctrl" key select every file with a "folder" icon and ".exe" as extension. Scroll down until the end of search result with the same procedure.
Press "Shift" + "del" and "Enter".
Follow steps 1-6 to confirm.
If nothing found virus has been removed.

This type of virus normally is about 600-800 kb in size .It mostly spreads through USB drive and remains undetected most of the time. It replaces all the folders in the system by hiding them and create a .exe one with the same name. Every time you open your folders the virus runs a process in the background and opens the same folder but in a new window. And when you are working the background process starts replacing all folders in the system. Slowly the response time of the system decreases and ultimately it crashes.

Many times due to instant turnoff or other causes the OS gets corrupted mostly showing the error
"NTLDR missing" or "Press any key to Restart " or "Press Ctlr+Alt+Del" type of errors.Sometimes our pc takes much time to load this could be solved by following this steps:-

Enter the bios by pressing "del or F10", change the boot device options first boot device: CDROM and second boot device: HDD.
Insert a Windows Xp cd and press any key at the prompt "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD".
After Xp loads the first window appears which asks for " Enter to Continue" , "R to Repair" and "F3 to quit". Here press "R".
A dos prompt loads asking "which windows installation...." press "1", press "Enter" or the admin password if any.
Now prompt is C:/Windows
type "fixboot" it asks "due you want to write a new boot sector" press "enter" and or "Y".
Reboot your Computer.

In the next window press "F8" to agree and "R" to repair(repair only works with previously installed xp of the same version only)
Windows XP starts copying files and reboots automatically.
Now the 39 minutes procedure follows
At 33 minutes the window appears click next , Enter the key provided at the CDrom click Next.
At the next window click next and set the timezone, date and time.
At Network settings windows just click next after installing windows reboots automatically.
The First time setup window loads. Enter the relevant information in the following windows like username, registration,etc.
The Windows XP Repair is Complete.

How to Format a Windows Xp Computer

Start your computer and press del key(alternately f10,f9) to go to the bios.
In bios advance features(alternately boot options) change first boot device to hdd or hdd0 and second boot device to cdrom.
Insert Your XP CD and press F10(Save), Yes.
In the next dos prompt "Press Any Key To Boot From CD/DVD " press any key
The Windows Xp setup loads here the first window appears press "ENTER"
In the next window press "F8" to agree and "ESC" to don't repair(Repair would be studied in detail in other topics)
Now the partition window appears here press "D" to delete a partition by selecting it and "L" to confirm(if you are on C drive it asks for "Enter " to confirm).
Repeat the steps if you want all your partitions to be deleted.
Next press "C" to create partition and "Enter" to confirm(if you want to create more partitions specify in bytes 1mb=1000bytes eg: if you want two 20gb partition from single 35gb drive enter 20000 and 15000 respectively(not exactly 15000 as some space gets reserved))
Now the step is formatting by selecting a partition press "Enter", in the next window select either "Format as Fat quick" for 20gb or less or "Format with NTFS" (Fat- File Allocation Table NTFS- New Technology File System).
Windows xp starts copying files and reboots automatically.
