Flowers

2026-06-26T19:00:01.806-04:00

My neighbor just got flowers delivered to her and she seemed really happy about it! It’s good to remember there are beautiful, rich, and complex stories playing out all around us every day that have nothing to do with us in any way. To be alive is a great thing.

All Those Things

2026-06-10T19:09:22.126-04:00

All those things you tell yourself you should be doing; Working out. Praying. Reading. Cooking instead of ordering out. Talking to the people you love. Turning off your phone and going outside to sit in the grass with your shoes off…whatever those things you tell yourself you should be doing instead of what you are doing are…give whatever that regimen is 7 days. Do those things like your life depends on it. Do those things like that’s all there is to do. Also take note of the things you are doing that are preventing you from doing the things you think you should do, and stop doing those things. Just for 7 days. I guarantee you will not regret it.

I like quotes about failure, because massive failure is so interwoven with massive success. 'Fail harder', 'Fail again. Fail better'. The risk of failure is always out there. You have to look it in the eye and laugh. You have to accept it as you accept the dirt beneath your nails. Failure is for people who work for something. Failure is for heroes. Failure is an old friend that every time you meet, brings you closer to the truth. Failure is nothing to fear.

I am 45 years old. Based upon all of my experiences and learnings so far, this is the best advice I can give: Fall in Love and protect it. Protect that love. You have found a fire that looks like God to you: Catch on fire and stay lit. Spread your fire. Spread your love. There are all kinds of winds and waters that seek to put your love out. Grow the flame so it evaporates the water. Use the wind to spread the gospel of your love. Fall in love. Be on fire. Spread the fire. Stay lit. That is my advice.

Once Upon a Time

2026-01-24T16:48:01.012-05:00

Once upon a time most of the bootlickers who support the American Gestapo (ICE) were in favor of open carry, especially as a precaution against an overstepping government. Anyone who remembers the name Philando Castile and the very cautious response from the NRA when that legal gun owner was murdered by the police knows this is bullshit, but it’s worth mentioning again here. Now those same people are gleefully supporting fascism and state sanctioned terrorism against innocent, hard-working people. It has never been about protecting rights or freedom or the constitution, or any of that nonsense they used to like to talk about. It was and still is all about retribution for their own personal frustrations and fears, and validation for their own personal cowardice and hatred. We need to organize. We need to be healthy. We need to exercise. We need to be strong. We need to study. We need to be serious. We need to check in on each other and stand with the vulnerable. These are days we should be grateful to live in, because we have the opportunity to find out what we are actually made of. ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice’ - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Core Memories

I am an early bird. One of the early bird activities I like to engage in is preparing the meals for the day. Lewis (who is not an early bird) once told me that he has fond memories of being awakened way before he intended to wake up and handed something with the instructions ‘try this’, which he would do sleepily, think it was delicious and go back to sleep. When he told me this he said, ‘always wake me up to try good food’. I just remembered this as I'm preparing dinner and it made me happy, so I decided to document it. Cooking for people you love is one of the greatest joys.

Let’s Name Their Tools

Just collecting information here. As long as I have been alive, the capitalist class has been presenting made up cultural panics to lead working class people (who would otherwise vote in their own economic interest) to vote to keep the system ‘as is’, meaning the capitalists on the top and the working people on the bottom. I would like to assemble a list of all of these panics in one place. This is an opportunity for all of you history nerds to shine. I’ll get us started: 1. The Red Scare 2. The Satanic Panic 3. Sharia Law / The Caliphate 4. Trans Kids doing sports 5. Woke 6. DEI 7. Gay Marriage leading to humans marrying animals 8. White genocide 9. Criminal Immigrant Caravans 10. Trans people going to the bathroom 11. Immigrants ‘stealing our jobs’ 12. ‘Welfare Queens’ 13. Political Correctness 14. Cancel Culture Those are just off the top of the dome. What am I missing, and what is next?

Text 1

2025-11-08T12:37:00.000-05:00

The Rules: 1. What you know and what you believe are different things. 2. Everyone always tells the truth, even when they are lying. What a person chooses to say or is driven to say reveals the makeup of their being and is always visible for those who can see it and are not clouded by their own story. 3. Power is not a thing to be kept or collected. Power passes through us. We must make ourselves conduits for the greater power and we must use the power that passes through us to make others more powerful. If you aren’t willing to lose power, you are unworthy of power. If you make yourself into a perfect conduit and channel power appropriately when it cycles to you, it will come to you again, because it will recognize your conductive value and begin to seek you out. 4. We do not exist. In the beginning, God exploded himself into everything that is so that he could know himself. We are all parts of God and our mission is to experience our individual lives and beings, and then when all is said and done return back to the whole with our experience. We are the existence of God and we are God experiencing himself. 5. Learn or Get Taught: you will understand in the end, you have to choose whether to be open to the information and truth (learn) or to have the information and truth delivered to you (get taught) because you are too invested in your own constructed narrative and validating and safeguarding your own illusion of separation from God and others. This form of coming to the truth is the most painful, but it still gets you there. We do not exist. 6. We are all part of the same story. Within each of our own stories the larger story is told, and of course, you can find each of our stories in the larger story. 7. Seek to be kind above all else. 8. What one generation learns the next takes on faith. Faith can’t continue forever without being met by skepticism. The skepticism of that third generation will either lead to the discovery of whatever error was made by the first generation and create space for modification or dismantling, or it will reinforce the truth of the findings of that first generation and the bolster the faith of the second. 9. Surrender to Joy 10. Every relationship creates a chemical reaction that changes both participants and makes them something new. Every interaction with another being creates a new thing and leaves an impression on each participant. 11. Every word you speak is a kind of prayer. An invocation.

The Beauty of Wear & Tear

I feel a kind of affection for any piece of clothing I absolutely wore the shit out of. This has been a great pair of corduroys. I’ve probably been wearing these pants weekly for the last 15 years.

Bring Back the Heavy Machinery

2025-10-05T17:28:00.002-04:00

I propose that the reason younger generations aren’t having sex is because nobody makes mixtapes any more. The labor involved in choosing the songs, operating the machinery of the stereo recording system, hand writing the names of the songs and doing the appropriate doodles on the blank cassette tape box insert for a special person has been lost in an era where everything is available at all times on Spotify or whatever. The kids aren’t fucking because they’re not falling in love, and they’re not falling in love because music has become less special. That’s my hot take.

Solidarity with the Kids

2025-06-17T17:38:00.003-04:00

I have something to share with the youth: The things that don’t make sense about life and people and the world will still not make sense when you get older, but you will understand them better.

Spreadsheets

2025-05-20T13:36:00.001-04:00

I stepped outside for a minute to get some air after the rain. I was tired of looking at spreadsheets and talking about spreadsheets. It was pleasantly cool and breezy. I listened to a bird singing on the powerline in front of the sandy colored building across the street and wondered if he was singing for himself, talking to someone, or maybe singing for God. He flew over to my side of the street—singing the whole time—and landed in a tree in the parking lot. A big black street cat quickly ran past me and under a bush. I walked over to the railing and saw him crossing the street into the big fenced off parking lot by the sandy building. He must have jumped from the ledge. The bird began singing again from the tree behind me as I watched the cat prowl along the service vehicles in the lot. A FedEx truck drove past. Water suddenly spilled from a PVC pipe I hadn’t noticed on my side of the street. Suddenly a little bald man in a sanitation uniform came out of the sandy building’s garage door with a plastic or styrofoam bowl with something in it. Seven or eight cats—including the one I had been watching—rushed over to where he sat down the little bowl and began voraciously eating. This must be a regular ritual for them. It started to drizzle again and I went back inside to look at some more spreadsheets.

An Aside

2025-03-21T17:01:00.004-04:00

Also, beauty has been in this world as long as ugliness, if not longer. In fact, I would say beauty underlies and informs everything. Ugliness couldn't exist if beauty didn't first exist. Ugliness is a rebellion against beauty.

Some Small Advice on Living in a World That Isn’t Right

2025-02-18T08:34:00.002-05:00

I am lucky to have sons who care about people and the condition of the world. They are very attuned to what is going on and feel anxiety over what is happening and how they can have an impact. Eliot and I have been having conversations as I leave for work in the morning and he is returning home from his third shift position, and they have been wonderful. We didn’t have much time to talk today however, so I shot him this text when I got to the office. I’m sharing it here too, just in case it is helpful to anyone: I am just one guy, so this may only apply to me and I may not even have the whole picture. I most likely do not. For what it's worth though, this is my purpose in a world that is not right: 1. Do not become hard to fight hard things. Strength and hardness are different. 2. Protect and engage in the things that make humanity beautiful: kindness, joy, art, silliness. Those are the real enemies of fascism. 3. Cultivate Joy and Hope in yourself and share it with those around you. Joy and hope are not things that you run out of. Unlike other things, the more you give them to others, the more they increase in you. I hope that is helpful.

Make It Happen

I’m at the Rollarena watching Langston skate—and his skills have increased significantly—but there is a guy here maybe 10 years younger than me trying to learn how to skate and he keeps falling and laughing and his friends are watching him and laughing, but he keeps getting up and going for it and it is honestly inspiring. I would upload a video of him, but I don’t want to make him self-conscious if he catches me recording. He’s a pimp though.

Mercy Mercy Mercy!

This is one of my favorite songs of all time because of this performance. It’s a great song on its own, but this live version—where the crowd’s reaction is as important as the music itself—makes it a near religious experience on vibes alone. If you haven’t heard it yet, please accept my recommendation.
