First of all EURO 2008 has nothing closely related to Ipoh, or is it?? Well, if you guys think that I am a little off topic, you may be wrong :) Ipoh eats, drinks and sleeps football! Just look at those Salam's mamak roti canai shops. PACKED.

Good call Uncle Lim, we'll be there to show support but please urge supporters to stay calm and not to create a riot or else many Ipohans will get hurt...knowing the FRU habit of beating up people the way they prefers. See you there Ipohans and please don't bring your kids along. This is not a picnic, it's serious matter!

Concerned Ipohans, please be there in Greentown to show your support for this demonstration/protest over this crazy and steep petrol hike! In case you didn't notice(I truly doubt so), around 5.30pm yesterday our Prime Minister announced that each litre of petrol will be increased RM$0.78 more to make it RM$2.70 per litre, as of today. So let's get togather and let them know we Ipohans CANNOT AFFORD such increment because our pay is the lowest in Malaysia!! Be there at 11am sharp.

According to latest development on Lim Kit Siang's Blog, the turnout of supporters in Ipoh, Greentown, numbered around few hundreds. This is a good number at any scale of demonstrations in Malaysia, and especially Ipoh. The protest only took place for half an hour.

This demonstration in Ipoh over 41% of petrol price hike was led by DAP MP for Ipoh Barat, M. Kulasegaran, Perak State Assembly Speaker Sivakumar, Perak DAP State Excos Su Keong Siong, A. Sivanesan and Chen Fook Chye and DAP Perak Assembly members Leong Mee Meng (Jalong), Lim Pek Har (Menglembu), Ong Boon Piow (Tebing Tinggi) and Siva Subramanian (Buntong), together with representatives from trade unions and NGOs and of course DAP Supremo Uncle Lim Kit Siang himself.

Excerpts from Lim Kit Siang's speech at the Ipoh Petrol Price Hike this morning at Greentown:

The sudden hefty oil price increases – 40.6 per cent and 63.3 per cent increase in pump petrol price and diesel price respectively – creating a seven-hour nation-wide chaos is an outrage as it is most unconscionable, unjustifiable and deplorable reflecting poorly on good governance in Malaysia especially after ministerial undertaking that there would be no changes until August.

The introduction of annual cash rebate of RM625 to those who own cars of 2,000 cc and below, and pick-up trucks and jeeps of 2,500 cc and below, and cash rebate of RM150 a year for owners of motor-cycles of 250 cc and below, as well as road tax discounts, will not be able to fully cushion the low and middle-income Malaysians from the inflationary spiral which would be unleashed by the greatest hike in oil prices in the nation’s history.

Equally of concern will be the deterioration of the public safety index, with the expected worsening of the crime situation which has already become an endemic problem causing Malaysians, tourists and investors to fear for their personal safety, their loved ones and the safety of property as well!

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said yesterday:

“We cannot keep subsidising at the current rate. We must reduce wastage. If we can change our lifestyles, we will not suffer a terrible situation.”

However, the present government has no credibility in setting an example of “change of lifestyles” in eradicating the parasitic subsidy mentality as it has shown no political will to eliminate the rampant waste, extravagance, abuse of public funds, lack of accountability and corruption rife in the public sector, as illustrated by Malaysia’s worsening reputation on corruption whether nationally or internationally, the RM4.6 billion Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) bailout scandal, the lack of accountability for the Petronas billions, etc.

In the previous oil price increases in February 2006, the government promised radical improvements in the public transport system – but nothing has come out of it.

The Prime Minister and all the Cabinet Ministers owe Malaysians a full and acceptable explanation why they could not fully involve the Malaysian public in the restructuring of the fuel pricing system which is fair and equitable to the low and middle-income Malaysians and done in a competent , professional and accountable manner as to avoid the seven-hour nation-wide chaos yesterday.

Parliament, which ended its meeting last week and would meet again on 23rd June, should have been the forum to decide on the fuel pricing system which is fair, equitable and efficient.

Why was Parliament by-passed altogether by the Cabinet?

The first item of business of the forthcoming parliamentary meeting should be a motion to seek approval of Parliament for the hefty and unconscionable oil price increases yesterday. This motion should be moved by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi himself.

Ipoh Petrol Bombs Attack: Perak DAP Headquarter

Perak DAP Headquarter in Ipoh attacked by Molotov Cocktails!

News reported that a total of three Molotov Cocktails (Petrol Bomb) were thrown at the windows of DAP Headquarter, believed to be around 2.20 am on 15/5/2008. Two men on a motorcycle were spotted to have thrown the bombs. One of the three bombs hit the window panel and broke it but the bomb itself was bounced off and hit the street below.

A guard on duty at a nearby school spotted the incident and lodged a police report.

When interviewed, Perak EXCO Ngeh Koo Ham (DAP) said he believe it's an act of political vengeance. He however refused to comment on whether this attack has anything to do with DAP's Chairman, Karpal Singh on recent issue with the Royals of Perak.

Nobody was reported injured by the attack and police have stepped in to investigate. The irony was... the police classified this attack as vandalism. Huh??! Does this mean if someone is caught responsible, they'll only be charged in vandalism and get off with a light penalty? This is not vandalism... it's terrorism!

HINDRAF Demonstration In Ipoh, Jaya Jusco!

Latest HINDRAF demonstration seeking for the release of its leaders have now spilled over to Ipoh yesterday, 11-05-2008, in front of Jaya Jusco Ipoh.

It appeared to be a small demonstration not amounting to more than 50 demonstrators. Everything seemed calm and in peaceful order. The police were at the scene controlling the situation, while Ipoh Barat MP M.Kula Segaran (DAP) tried to negotiate with the police and urged HINDRAF supporters to remain peaceful and not to create unwanted violence.

Updates 2: Actual event

This demonstration in Ipoh was only a small fraction of the actual event organized simultaneously nationwide. Turnout of supporters were poor mainly due to the clash with Mother's Day celebration. The more noticeable are the demonstrations in Penang (where 4 were arrested, including a woman and a blogger) and Kuala Lumpur. The main agenda were to call for abolishment of ISA, free HINDRAF 5 and better medical treatment for one its leaders, P. Uthayakumar. Uthayakumar apparently suffers heart problem while in detention. All of the nationwide demonstrations were peaceful and no violence was provoked, yet the police in Penang still made arrest. :(

No arrest reported in Kuala Lumpur.

Rice Crisis In Ipoh...or Kiasu?

First thing first. I have not been able to blog for sometime due to...well, Celcom Broadband. It's really that bad and unusable! Complained, came, checked here and there, NO SOLUTION. Talk about this another time and let's get back to the title of this post.

I have no intention to create panic but this situation with shortage of rice due to global food crisis and the Myanmar Cyclone definitely cause us some discomfort, and I am worried! I only realize the reality when I walked into one of our major hypermart today to get some daily necessities. I was shocked to see the empty shelves used to be fully stocked with piles of rice in many brands. Finally, the rice crisis has hit this quite and peaceful city.

I have gathered some views from kopitiam chat on this matter. Some or most people believe that this food crisis is very real and genuine, and We are now experiencing it. When I say "genuine", yes I agree it's genuine but I have different opinion on the authenticity of the rice shortage. I am suspecting small and petty traders are actually behind this rather than the genuine crisis. Prospectors at work, it's really that simple.

Based on the report on major newspapers, our country is 70% self-sufficient in rice production and consumption. This gives me the idea that We should not be running out of it so, so soon right? So why are major hypermarts getting swept clean throughout the country?? The best thing is, it has now hit our beloved slow-paced city! What's the population like in Ipoh? LOW. So then where are all the rice gone to? We Ipohans don't earn tonnes and We don't really have the extra ringgits to keep stock. We made just enough for the month and We buy one thing at a time when it's needed, right my dear Ipohans?

This so called rice crisis in Ipoh is actually man-made. Small traders like sundry shops are piling up their stock. The easiest and quickest way to do it before the price of rice rises again is to buy it off the shelves from hypermarts because there's plenty and if they are to order from their usual suppliers, they'll have to wait for their delivery turn. By the time they get it, it would have increased many folds and these shop owners a.k.a "The Prospectors" will miss out on the chance to cash in on this crisis. What a humane way of doing business huh? Easy, just buy fast at the cheapest and wait for the price to shoot up the ceiling, and sell them! Our newly formed Pakatan Rakyat Government should really look very hard and deep into this matter or We Ipohans will suffer self-created inflation. Find time to drop by at our Tesco and Giant hypermarts and have a look at these people stacking up their rice like there's no tomorrow.

On the other hand, I think our Federal Government should also step in to control "a bit" on the selling prices from the manufacturers. It has really sky-rocketed to the extreme!

One SMS published on today's newspaper saying that this person bought a 10kg rice at RM17 last week and when return to buy yesterday, it has shot up to RM27 per pack! To confirm this, I took some pictures from the hypermart I visited today:

Scary? I heard from the promoters that the prices will rise again very soon, in matter of weeks. The irony is, according to the sales promoters for a famous brand, that she no longer needs to "hard-sell" her products because it sells like hot cakes now. She said she might be out of job if this continues, I really pity her. The prices for 10kg packed rice has really gone mad...very mad. It's been either doubling or tripling of prices. Take a look at those pictures above again and see if you remember anytime at all in the past that you paid such price for rice. This is very serious and We really need help here in Ipoh. I am not prepared to turn to potatoes and wheats just yet.

The only bright side in this crisis is, house-brand packed rice like Giant's own and Tesco Value/Choice selection is still stable. I checked today, it has increased just a minor bit and it is now selling at RM16.70 for 10kg of Tesco Super Tempatan. Unless you are cash rich or a rice connoisseur, I think these house-brands seems very friendly to switch to. I bought one pack today :) Just one, no stocking up...

These house-brands may be differ in quality compares to other famous and expensive brands but hey, it's edible! The only thing is they are not as fragrant because they are "old" rice. A simple trick like adding 3 cloves of garlic into them will give you a much desired aroma. If garlic is not your thing, you can also try adding a teaspoon of Planta or an egg and I guarantee you that it's much better than those RM50 pack of 10kg.

Guys, it's time to spend wisely and practically. If you haven't done your rice shopping please remember to buy minimum (2 packs of 10kg will do good) and do not create inflation out of this crisis. It's not as bad as you think. It's man-made and kiasu-ism...

Ipoh Hawkers' Dilemma: Supplies Risen By RM0.80 Per Kilo!

As of today, most of the supplies hawkers are getting for their food stall have risen from RM0.30 to RM0.80 per kilogram. The hot topic among the hawkers in Ipoh now are whether or not they should raise their selling price, as the steep pricing for supplies now badly affecting their business and profit.

Well, many of us consumers may scream our voice out and boycotting them from raising their selling price because it will directly hit us hard. As a consumer myself, I will agree on not paying much for food, our essential necessities. The question is, are We being selfish to think like this. Many of you will say 'humans are born selfish'...that I cannot agree.

On the hawkers side, today in Ipoh is no longer what it was 20 years back. You cannot say We paid RM0.60 for a plate of Chee Cheong Fun then and We should only pay RM1 for a plate now. The problem now is all these supplies are being commercialized and it's controlled by the suppliers, unlike back then where most of the hawkers will make their on food to sell. You may be wondering why they can't do it themselves nowadays? Why so lazy? The answer is, they are not being lazy...it's the competition in the city.

Back then when competition was less aggressive, you can really make your own food to sell at a very cheap price because you can make them in large volume and you can easily sell them off hawking around your area. Simple as that, big volume = low cost = cheap price = SOLD OUT! Now? The kopitiams in Ipoh are way over catering Ipohans. There are more kopitiams in Ipoh than its available population, in term of capacity. This only mean one thing, the hawkers can hardly share the piece of pie and business is not that good for them. When business is not fantastic, you cannot produce your own product, or you'll end up throwing them more likely than you sell them, common sense. When you cannot produce them, then you have to rely on commercial supplies and so these suppliers and factories controls the price. These suppliers may have their own headache to be fair, but this topic focuses on hawkers. :)

Famous Ipoh style Chee Cheong Fun
with pork & mushroom gravy

The Chee Cheong Fun (CCF) uncle at my area told me today that he wasn't sure to raise or not to raise his prices. The suppliers already did. He was telling me he only earns around 30% from a plate of CCF, which he sells at RM1.80 per plate and this works out to a profit of RM0.54. He was roughly calculating that with today's raise from his suppliers, each plate will cost him extra RM0.10 in cost term. Now, each plate only earns him RM0.44. Many Ipohans I spoke to think that being a hawker 'earns all and rich in cash'...wrong! Try waiting for customers yourself as a hawker, sell them plate after plate and in order to earn just RM50 profit, you have to sell roughly 114 plates! Unless you are the famous Pasir Pinji Chee Cheong Fun, you can barely survive hawking in the city of Ipoh. To make things clear, it is very hard to sell 100 plates and above nowadays due to the stiff competition. So uncle CCF daily income should be around RM40 and do you think that is 'earns all and cash rich'? After taking care of the ever expensive utilities at home, how much is left for him to actually spend? After a long chat, before I go I asked him the 'dilemma' question, "Will you be raising your selling price?" and his answer was, "I don't think so, no." He was telling me because of his old age and if he raise his prices, his old-time and loyal customers will complain and eventually not buying from him anymore...and there goes his business. He can't afford to loose this CCF business or else nobody would hire him for anything if he is to get a job. Also, what's the salary like in Ipoh? Our fellow Ipohans should know this very well. The employers in Ipoh still paying their clerk RM500 a month..duh!. An apprentice of a workshop gets paid RM250 a month and a full-time dishwasher gets RM600 a month. When will this change??!

Ok, enough ranting for today and sorry for slightly off topic if I did. :)

Prices for supply on Chee Cheong Fun, Kueh Teow, Hor Fun, Pan Mee, Yellow Mee and Bee Hoon ranges from RM0.30 to RM0.80 per kilogram and if you buy your food tomorrow at your favorite food stall and if they raised their selling price, try to be understanding and read this post again from the start. If, to your surprise that your favorite stall maintain its prices, be grateful, say thank you and never again bad-mouthing them!

*Even if the CCf uncle raised to RM2 per plate, I'll still buy from him.

New Mayor (Datuk Bandar) For Ipoh City

Latest News:

Ipoh will have a new City Mayor (Datuk Bandar), according to the latest news circulated. Earlier, a report from NST quoted that "A professional from the private sector is expected to be appointed the new mayor in the wake of the change in state government following the general election" but the latest news buzzing online has it that the new mayor will most likely come from PKR. The replacement of the current Mayor is neccessary because it is currently held by BN representative and this will create conflicts, as We all know that they are no longer in power. Out you go!

The rumor of suitable candidate to be from PKR is due to the power sharing and fair governance concept of the Pakatan Rakyat. In the newly formed Perak state government, PAS hold the state's highest position through our new Menteri Besar Nizar while DAP have the most say in deciding important issues of Perak governance and development through its majority EXCOs (Executive Councillors), and so it only comes natural to have a PKR representative to hold the third most important position in Perak which is the Mayor of Ipoh City.

Frankly, I wish to have the new Mayor from DAP... :)

UPDATES 1 (29/04/08):

The Malay Mail reports that DAP is supporting it's members M. Kulasegaran (MP of Ipoh Barat) to go for the new Mayor position due in June, meanwhile PAS and PKR has the intention to support the retainment of current BN's Ipoh City Mayor namely Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar.

What?! Just because you guys want to shy away from another tussle within the Pakatan Rakyat...that does not mean you have to support the BN appointee! This is a classic act of 'cut the nose to spite the face' and the chinese sayings; 'cut your toes to prevent getting sandworms onto them'. It's our right to choose our new Mayor NOT you guys, the ones that shy away from problems.

RC Flying Activities In Ipoh. More Please....

Ha! Never thought We have such activity and enthusiasts in Ipoh huh? Yes, We do have it. I would really hope to see more of this around Ipoh, and a more widened promotional agenda could help create greater interest and awareness. Such activities creates unison... and fun to watch! Do more with helicopters would be nice though.

This clip was recorded at a place called "Ipoh Flying Site", whereabout it, I don't know :). Hope to find out more about this.

RC (remotely controlled) Flying is still weak in Ipoh but it's good to know that there are some enthusiasts out there right now having fun! Care to share more info?

Ipoh City Summons (Saman) Officially Waived!

From my reading source (newspaper-la), the Ipoh City Council has officially cancelled all compound notices, or better known locally as saman, and also all hawking offences issued before March 17 this year.

I am more than welcome this gesture of goodwill..for my pocket. I myself have these petty samans issued by DBI for parking offences so I am part of the celebration..haha!

Also, the Chee Cheung Fun uncle near my place should be happy about it too. He once told me life is difficult as a hawker and judging from his battered look, I believe him. I'll check with him tomorrow and see whether he benefits from this waiver or not ya?

Let's not forget to thank our new government led by DAP-PKR-PAS, the PAKATAN RAKYAT. Nice move but please do more for us here in Ipoh aside from these petty stuff. I personally hope for renewal of flights from Ipoh-JB-Ipoh and yes, We need a serious airport to bring in tourists. Directly to Singapore is not a bad idea too. Also, I hope our new government will look into bringing in LRT or Monorail that links to Penang or KL and of course, around Ipoh and Perak, if possible. This will also bring in more local tourist and benefits those parents and office workers...just look at Singapore. Their students don't need to be fetched by their parents and workers can easily travel by MRT. This will definitely help a-l-o-t.

Yes...We have the double-tracking on its way but hey, that does not benefits the Ipohan directly. We need to fix our congestions during office and schooling hours for places like Jusco area, Cempaka area, Sam Tet (Parkson) area and many more so please help us!

Celcom Broadband In Ipoh Any Good?

NO. Forget it. I am one of the victims of those highly advertised recent Celcom Promotion (April, 2008) on their broadband services.

You want stable and good internet connection? Streamyx is still the best bet, even though I hated them much..but what to do??

The much "hyped" Celcom Broadband is truly a shame and I'll also call it a scam and please stop listening to those La-La Experts in the Low Yat forum. I do not know who they really are but I am armed with my original first-hand experience. I switched from Streamyx. :(

Here's what I got when I signed up for it at one of the BlueCube outlet in TESCO EXTRA (formerly know as MAKRO to Ipohans):

Package: D68 + USB Modem = RM99.00/month for 18 months

*Can't even get the embed code from SpeedTest, have to printscreen it. 3.00 am in the morning and yet with such speed?? Also, please note the pinging rate. It reminds me of TMNet 1515 dial-up package.

Besides the worst ever download speed I have since started using the Celcom Broadband D68 + USB Modem = RM 99/month 3 days ago, it is also ironic to find out from the Celcom Customer Service (after almost 7 calls before they can clarify it) that I cannot upgrade to the D98 package as it is tied to the 18 months contract. Why not?? I am willing to pay more money for faster speed, but they said NO. I have to bear with this snail-paced connection for the next 18 months. Scary? Yes it is and I am regretting it all the way. Don't you ever think of terminating the service before you fulfilled the 18 months "Jail Term" because you'll have to pay a penalty of RM350 to Celcom and another RM400 to BlueCube (I signed up with them), at the same time returning that USB Modem to them.

If any of you out there thinking what I am thinking..like..well D68 not good enough so just upgrade it to D98! WRONG. From my research over the net, you'll still get something like 15-20 Kbps even when you are running on their D98 package. GREAT.

One more thing, if you really want to sign up please make sure never to do that at a BlueCube outlet. Go straight to the actual Celcom branch. Why? I actually got conned by both the supervisor and the salesgirl at a BlueCube outlet, the one at TESCO EXTRA. Like a pro internet user, I asked over and over again regarding upgrading issue in case the D68 package does not suits me and they keep on telling me that I am allowed to do so at ease...just a phone call away to the Celcom Careline. I did just that. After my failed attemp with the Celcom Careline, I went back to that BlueCube supervisor and salesgirl. Guess what? Their reply is; "Really cannot ar?? But last time I think can." The girl then said; "Oh...you're on the D68 + Modem package...so you are tied to the 18 months contract before you can upgrade..I see..I see.."

I asked them how now? The last reply I got from her was; "Soli ar....."

On the side note, while writing all these down I have already tried 5 times to upload some very light photos and failed. I'll keep trying so that you guys can see what comes with the package and a prove of downloading speed from the Celcom USB Modem Dashboard. Check back please.
