There are plenty of stories of people getting hit by lightning but few about lightning fried fish. Find out whether lighting strikes hit fish and why or why not.

Conventional wisdom says to get out of the water when a storm approaches. However, while people are scrambling for shore, the fish and whales of the sea stay right in the water.

Considering sea creatures still exist in the ocean it would seem they are unaffected by lightning. This is only mostly true and a look at how lightning and the ocean work will explain whether or not lightning strikes kill fish.

How Often Does Lightning Hit the Ocean?

Fortunately for fish, lightning does not often strike the ocean, relatively speaking. NASA uses satellites to track storms and lightning around the world and reports in its December 2001 article “Where Lightning Strikes” how Florida and Central Africa are more likely to get hit than the open ocean. One of water’s special properties is its high heat capacity, which means air above the ocean won’t heat as much as air above land. Since hot low-lying air is necessary for thunderclouds to form, the open ocean doesn’t see too much lightning. Hurricanes of course do form over the ocean however these storms rarely have lightning, reports NASA in "Electric Hurricanes".

What Happens When Lightning Strikes the Ocean?

Although lightning is less likely to strike the ocean, these bolts of electricity do on occasion make it to sea. As lightning hits the ocean the electric current spreads along the surface of the water, rather than downward says April Holladay in her March 5, 2004 USA Today “Wonder Quest”. Since the lightning bolt does not continue down into the depths of the ocean it is less likely to affect fish. However, people on the surface can be affected. Holladay goes on to quote National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) scientist David Schultz as saying lightning strikes have killed people at the ocean’s surface more than 30 yards from the hit. This is due to how water conducts electricity.

Why Doesn't Lightning Strike Deeper into the Ocean?

Lightning spreads across the surface of the ocean due to a phenomenon called the skin effect which simply refers to an electric current's tendency to stay at the surface of a conductor. Meanwhile, skin depth refers to how deeply an electric current can penetrate a conductor. Richard Fitzpatrick, a professor of physics at the University of Texas at Austin, explains on his page "Propagation in a conductor" how in good conductors skin depth decreases as wave frequency increases. Salt water is a good conductor, so when lightning hits it has a fairly low skin depth.

Do Fish Die From Lightning Strikes?

Since lightning tends to spread along the surface of the ocean, where humans swim, it’s best for people to leave the water. Fish are generally found deeper in the ocean where the electric current is less likely to catch them, however a fish unfortunate enough to be at the surface close to a lightning bolt would most certainly be fried. NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory notes in its “About Lightning…FAQ” page that lightning can penetrate a short distance into the water and kill fish nearby. Martin Uman of the University of Florida’s electrical and engineering department says the danger zone for fish is 10 to 20 feet down, as referenced in the MSN Encarta column “Martha Talks Back” by Martha Brockenborough. Ultimately, the answer to the question “Does lightning kill fish?” is – occasionally, but not often.

Scientists can hack our minds with cheap EEG gear

Inexpensive brain-computer interfaces could be used maliciously to obtain private information such as PINs stored in one's memory, according to researchers.

Are you ready for brain spyware?
Are the deepest secrets of your mind safe?
Could thieves trick you into revealing your bank card PIN or computer passwords just by thinking about them?

Ivan Martinovic of the University of Oxford and colleagues at the University of Geneva and University of California at Berkeley describe research into that question in a paper entitled "On the Feasibility of Side-Channel Attacks With Brain-Computer Interfaces" presented earlier this month at the 21st USENIX Security Symposium.

The research was inspired by the growing number of games and other mind apps available for low-cost consumer EEG devices such as Emotiv's EPOC headset, which lets users interact with computers using their thoughts alone.

Malicious developers could create a "brain spyware" app designed to trick users into thinking about sensitive information, which it would then steal.

The research focused on the P300 brain signal, often emitted when something meaningful is recognized. It has been considered in the design of recent lie detectors.

Twenty eight subjects using Emotiv headsets were shown images such as numbers, bank cards, ATMs, and people's faces while being asked specific questions that target specific information.

Their brain waves, specifically the P300, were treated with signal processing software.

The scientists then sat their subjects in front of a computer screen and showed them images of banks, people, and PIN numbers.

They then tracked the readings coming off of the brain, specifically a signal known as P300.

The P300 signal is used by the brain when a person recognizes something meaningful, such as someone or something they interact with on a regular basis.

It is released by the brain around 300 milliseconds after recognition occurs, hence its name.
The team used a picture of President Barack Obama to test the readings, and saw a spike of recognition from participants.
They were also shown their home, which caused a similar reaction.
'These devices have access to your raw EEG [electroencephalography, or electrical brain signal] data, and that contains certain neurological phenomena triggered by subconscious activities,” says Ivan Martinovic, a member of the faculty in the department of computer science at Oxford.
'So the central question we were asking with this is work was, is this is a privacy threat?'
The team found they could find a person's home 60% of the time with a one in ten chance, and had a 40% chance of recognising the first number of a PIN number.Researchers could guess the correct answer for participants ,the regional location of their home 30%, birth month 60%.

The private info extracted from the tests was 15-40 percent less random, or uncertain, compared to guessing alone.

"The captured EEG signal could reveal the user's private information about, e.g., bank cards, PIN numbers," the researchers conclude.

"This is still very noisy data signal, (and the) devices are not made for detecting these kinds of patterns," Martinovic told the conference, "but it was possible to see that in any of these experiments, we could actually perform better than a pure random guess."

He noted that the quality of the EEG devices and the signals they produce is bound to improve, and attackers could exploit that increased accuracy.

"There's a question about whether there is a potential for more sophisticated attacks -- can we embed these attacks in videos, online games?"

Kevin Warwick, once a cyborg and still a researcher in cybernetics at the University of Reading, has been working on creating neural networks that can control machines. He and his team have taken the brain cells from rats, cultured them, and used them as the guidance control circuit for simple wheeled robots. Electrical impulses from the bot enter the batch of neurons, and responses from the cells are turned into commands for the device. The cells can form new connections, making the system a true learning machine. Warwick hasn’t released any new videos of the rat brain robot for the past few years, but the three older clips we have for you below are still awesome. He and his competitors continue to move this technology forward – animal cyborgs are real.So we can think of our future

Well it is actually alot more complicated than it sounds and I will try to describe it as best as can. To get these cells, scientists extract the neural cortex from a rat fetus and then seperate all the connecting neurons from each other. They then put all the neurons back together again in a rich nutrient environment containing electrodes. The neurons then reconnect with each other and, after a period of extended time, start communicating with each other using electrical signals. They store the cells in temperature controlled environment (room temperature) and connect to the robot (or “animat”) using bluetooth radio technology.

Here is where things get complicated. The animat has ultra sound sensors on all sides. When the sensors detect something such as a wall, they send a signal to the electrodes which in turn send signals to the neurons. The neurons react to the signal by sending out their own signal which then tells the robot to got left or right.
If your brain isn’t already hurting like mine is, you maybe thinking ” Well thats interesting, but how will this affect human lives with the exception of the machine uprising?” Well scientists believe that doing experiments like these, they may be able to learn alot more about the brain then we do now. And with this knowledge they may be able to find out new treatments or even cures for mental disorders such as Alzheimers or Parkinson’s disease.
The skills of these rat-robot hybrids are very basic at this point. Mainly the neuron control helps the robot to avoid walls. Yet that obstacle avoidance often shows clear improvement over time, demonstrating how networks of neurons can grant simple learning to the machines. Whenever I watch the robots in the videos below I have to do a quick reality check – these machines are being controlled by biological cells! It’s simply amazing.
Warwick was busy in the beginning of the year, publishing three papers in regards to biological control of robots. He gave a great overview of the field in both the Defence Science Journal and the Proceedings of the IME, and then he published a really interesting discussion on the implications of these systems in the journal of Ethics and Information Technology. As Warwick points out again and again, these cyborgs are going to become more advanced, probably sooner rather than later. Current cultures of neurons have about 100,000 cells, but only a small fraction are actually involved in controlling the robot circuits at any given time. Research teams continually find new ways to increase the size and response of these cultures, as well as how long they can survive. Eventually, we’ll have a cultured system that is roughly the size of the simplest of mammalian brains. At that point these systems will be able to accomplish much more, but how will we classify devices that contain living cells, especially if they become somewhat intelligent?
Artificial intelligence is usually pursued through computer science, but biotech systems like Warwick’s raise the possibility that cybernetics may be a quicker route to success. There are several other teams around the world working on similar systems (Steve Potter’s group at Georgia Tech is doing pretty well). Collectively these researchers are pushing the boundaries of what biologically controlled machines can perceive and learn.

Early Life

Time at Harvard

After graduating from Exeter in 2002, Zuckerberg enrolled at Harvard University. It was at that time that he built a program called CourseMatch, which helped students choose their classes based on the course selections of other users. He also invented Facemash, which compared the pictures of two students on campus and allowed users to vote on which one was more attractive. Based on the buzz of his previous projects, three of his fellow students—Divya Narendra, and twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss—sought him out to work on an idea for a social networking site they called Harvard Connection. Zuckerberg agreed to help with the project, but soon dropped out to work on his own social networking site with friends Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin.

The group ran the site—first called The Facebook—out of a dorm room at Harvard until June 2004. The Rise of Facebook

In 2005, Zuckerberg's enterprise received a huge boost from the venture capital firm Accel Partners. Accel invested $12.7 million into the network, which at the time was open only to ivy league students. Zuckerberg's company then granted access to other colleges, high school and international schools, pushing the site's membership to more than 5.5 million users by December 2005. The site then began attracting the interest of other companies, who wanted to advertize with the popular social hub. Not wanting to sell out, Zuckerberg turned down offers from companies such as Yahoo! and MTV Networks. Instead, he focused on expanding the site, opening up his project to outside developers and adding more features.

Zuckerberg seemed to be going nowhere but up, however in 2006, the business mogul faced his first big hurdle. The creators of Harvard Connection claimed that Zuckerberg stole their idea, and insisted the software developer needed to pay for their business losses. Zuckerberg maintained that the ideas were based on two very different types of social networks but, after lawyers searched Zuckerberg's records, incriminating Instant Messages revealed that Zuckerberg may have intentionally stolen the intellectual property of Harvard Connection and offered Facebook users' private information to his friends.

Zuckerberg later apologized for the incriminating messages, saying he regretted them. "If you're going to go on to build a service that is influential and that a lot of people rely on, then you need to be mature, right?" he said in an interview with The New Yorker. "I think I've grown and learned a lot."

Although an initial settlement of $65 million was reached between the two parties, the legal dispute over the matter continued well into 2011, after Narendra and the Winklevosses claimed they were misled in regards to the value of their stock.

Zuckerberg faced yet another personal challenge when the 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires, by writer Ben Mezrich, hit stores. Mezrich was heavily criticized for his re-telling of Zuckerberg's story, which used invented scenes, re-imagined dialogue and fictional characters. Regardless of how true-to-life the story was, Mezrich managed to sell the rights of the tale to screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, and the critically acclaimed film The Social Network received eight Academy Award nominations.

Zuckerberg objected strongly to the film's narrative, and later told a reporter at The New Yorker that many of the details in the film were inaccurate. For example, Zuckerberg has been dating longtime girlfriend

Priscilla Chan, a Chinese-American medical student he met at Harvard, since 2003. He also said he never had interest in joining any of the final clubs. "It's interesting what stuff they focused on getting right; like, every single shirt and fleece that I had in that movie is actually a shirt or fleece that I own,

" Zuckerberg told a reporter at a start-up conference in 2010. "So there's all this stuff that they got wrong and a bunch of random details that they got right."

Yet Zuckerberg and Facebook continued to succeed, in spite of the criticism. Time magazine named him Person of the Year in 2010, and Vanity Fair placed him at the top of their New Establishment list. Forbes also ranked Zuckerberg at No. 35—beating out Apple CEO Steve Jobs—on its "400" list, estimating his net worth to be $6.9 billion.

Philanthropic Causes

Since amassing his sizeable fortune, Zuckerberg has used his millions to fund a variety of philanthropic causes. The most notable examples came in 2010. In September of that year, he donated $100 million to save the failing Newark Public Schools system in New Jersey. Then, in December 2010, Zuckerberg signed the "Giving Pledge", promising to donate at least 50 percent of his wealth to charity over the course of his lifetime. Other Giving Pledge members include Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and George Lucas. After his donation, Zuckerberg called on other young, wealthy entrepreneurs to follow suit. "With a generation of younger folks who have thrived on the success of their companies, there is a big opportunity for many of us to give back earlier in our lifetime and see the impact of our philanthropic efforts," he said.

Going Public

Zuckerberg made two major life changes in May 2012. Facebook had its initial public offering, which raised $16 billion, making it the biggest Internet IPO in history. How Zuckerberg's company will handle this influx of cash remains to be seen. But Zuckerberg may be looking at more acquisitions. He personally negotiated the company deal to buy Instragram the previous month.

After the initial success of the IPO, the Facebook stock price dropped somewhat in the early days of trading. But Zuckerberg is expected to weather any ups and downs in his company's market performance. He holds more than a quarter of its stock and retains 57% control of the voting shares.

On May 19, a day after the IPO, Zuckerberg wed his longtime girlfriend Priscilla Chan. About 100 people gathered at the couple's Palo Alto, California home. Reality as we sense it, is not quite real. The stars we see in the night sky, for instance, are not really there. They may have moved or even died by the time we get to see them. This unreality is due to the time it takes for light from the distant stars and galaxies to reach us. We know of this delay.It is explained below

For example a star approximately 500 light years(light year is the distance travelled by the light in one year) away from earth, so when we look at that star,light from the corresponding star travels 500 years and reaches to earth and then on our eye,so what we're actually seeing is what that star looked like 500 years ago!.That means we are seeing the light of star which is emitted 500 years ago!!.so the star may or may not exist or present at that point but its image of 500 years back.

Even the sun that we know so well is already eight minutes old by the time we see it.

So everything in universe we see is not in real time and its delayed with some time as light takes some time to travel.(Basic point is we can see an object only if light is projected on that object or emmitted from that object).

Light is the fastest thing in the Universe - around 300,000 km / second - but the Universe is huge.
Stars live anything from a few millions of years to many billions. The main factor controlling this is their mass. Large stars have the shortest lifes, because they 'burn up' their nuclear fuels much faster than the small ones.

The galaxy we are located in is 100,000 light years across, so several of the stars that can be seen will actually have ceased to exist by the time their light reaches us. When we go beyond the galaxy and look at other galaxies billions of light years away you can imagine that most of them will have stopped shining a long time ago.

The light is emitted by the stars as photons. The photons are independent of the star once they are emitted. It doesn't matter what happens to the star, those photons just keep on travelling for millions and billions of years until they strike the back of your eye, or a photographic plate, or just about anything else.

Even the sun that we know so well is already eight minutes old by the time we see it. This fact does not seem to present particularly grave epistemological problems - if we want to know what is going on at the sun now, all we have to do is to wait for eight minutes. We only have to 'correct' for the distortions in our perception due to the finite speed of light before we can trust what we see. The same phenomenon in seeing has a lesser-known manifestation in the way we perceive moving objects. How to dual boot Windows 7 and Windows XP and others?

One can have dual boot option on PC to boot multiple operating system on single computer. For example, you can have Windows XP, Linux, Vista, Windows 7 etc on single PC by installing them in different partitions.

But to have that dual configuration, you will have to install the latest version after the earlier ones.

suppose you installed windows xp in a partition and then installed latest windows such as windows 7 in other partition then dual boot will occur and their will be no problem.

For example, you can have dual boot option if you have installed Windows 7 in different partition on a PC with already installed XP. But if you will install XP after Windows 7, boot screen will not see any option to start Windows 7. But there may be a situation where you need to install Windows XP on your pre-installed Windows 7 PC.This guide tells you ‘How to dual boot Windows 7 and Windows XP’ with Windows 7 installed first. This case is applicable for users who have Windows 7 pre-installed on ‘C’ and want to install XP on their ‘D’ partition.

The process for this is same as we did for Windows XP & Vista. Follow the simple steps below to install XP after Windows 7.

1) Make a clean Install of Windows XP on ‘D’ partition of your hard drive. Assuming, Windows 7 is installed on ‘C’ partition.

2) After restarting system, you will directly boot into Windows XP. That’s because XP writes its bootloader over Windows 7. So, we need to restore the Win 7 bootloader.

3) To restore 7, you need to Boot from the Windows 7 DVD and “Repair your computer”. Check this article “How to Perform a Startup Repair in Windows 7” to perform repair.

4) After repairing, your system will restart and boot into Windows 7.

5) Download and Install EasyBCD on your Windows 7 to add boot entry for XP.

6) Launch the program and select ‘Add New Entry’. Under “Operating Systems” open the Windows tab, select the Type as “Windows NT/2k/XP/2k3” and click on ‘Add Entry’.

The entry for Windows XP would be added instantly. You can choose the default OS to boot and modify the boot menu time-out from “Edit Boot Menu” option.

That’s it. Now restart you PC and you’ll be presented with two options, Windows 7 and Windows XP. Select the OS you want to work on.

Even simple process without repair step in above process :

I installed Windows XP in different partition of my computer hard disk and then lost Windows 7 boot option. After the successful installation of Windows XP, computer started properly but with only XP. To get the dual boot option and get back Windows 7 boot option, you will have to follow below steps,

1. Start your computer (It will start with Windows XP)
2. Download Microsoft .net framework and install the same
3. Download and Install EasyBCD on your current Windows
4. Now use Add/Edit Entry to add Windows XP in the list. To do that, Select Windows NT/2K/XP in the type dropdown and type Windows XP in the name section
5. You may set the drive where XP is installed
6 Finally, you will have to “Write MBR” which is available under “Bootloader Setup” tab in the left navigation. select “Install the windows vista/7 bootloader to the MBR”

Done. Now restart your computer and there you can see dual boot option for Windows 7 and Microsoft Windows XP. You can use EasyBCD for multiple boot options as well. For example, to have Ubuntu, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 on a single PC

This step-by-step guide demonstrates how to install Windows 7 Ultimate. The guide is similar for other versions of Windows 7 such as Home Premium.

The best way to install Windows 7 is to do a clean install. It is not difficult to perform a clean installation. Before you start the installation process I recommend that you check Windows 7 System Requirements list to ensure that your hardware is supported by Windows 7. If you don't have Windows 7 drivers for all your hardware, it is a good idea to download all the drivers from the hardware manufacturers website and save all the necessary drivers on a CD-R or a USB drive before you start the installation.

Windows 7 DVD is bootable. In order to boot from the DVD you need to set the boot sequence. Look for the boot sequence under your BIOS setup and make sure that the first boot device is set to CD-ROM/DVD-ROM.

Step 1 - Place Windows 7 DVD in your dvd-rom drive and start your PC. Windows 7 will start to boot up and you will get the following progress bar.

Step 2 - The next screen allows you to setup your language, time and currency format, keyboard or input method. Choose your required settings and click next to continue.

Step 3 - The next screen allows you to install or repair Windows 7. Since we are doing a clean install we will click on "install now".

Step 4 - Read the license terms and tick I accept license terms. Then click next to continue.

Step 5 - You will now be presented with two options. Upgrade or Custom (Advanced). Since we are doing a clean install we will select Custom (Advanced).

Step 6 - Choose where you would like to install Windows 7. If you have one hard drive you will get a similar option to the image below. You can click next to continue. If you have more that one drive or partition then you need to select the appropriate drive and click next. If you need to format or partition a drive then click Drive options (advance) before clicking next.

Step 7 - Windows 7 starts the installation process and starts copying all the necessary files to your hard drive as shown on the image below.

Step 8 - It will go through various stages of the setup and will reboot your system few times.

Step 9 - When your PC reboots it attempts to boot from DVD as its the first boot device. Do not press any key during the boot prompt so Windows 7 will continue with the installation by booting from the hard drive.

Step 10 - After the reboot your computer will be prepared for first use.

Step 11 - At this stage you need to choose a user name and computer name. Click next to continue. The user account you create here is the Administrator account which is the main account for your Windows 7 that has all the privileges.

Step 12 - Choose your password and password hint just incase you forget your password and need to jog your memory.

Step 13 - You can now type the product key that came with Windows 7 and click next. If you do not enter the product key you can still proceed to the next stage. However Windows 7 will run in trial mode for 30 days. You must therefore activate Windows within 30 days otherwise you can not access your computer after 30 days.

Step 14 - Help protect your computer and improve Windows automatically. Choose Use recommended settings.

Step 15 - Review your time and date settings. Select your time zone, correct the date and time and click next to continue.

Step 16 - Select your computer's current location. If you are a home user then choose Home network otherwise select the appropriate option.

Step 17 - Windows will now finalize the settings for your computer and restart.

Step 18 - After the final restart Windows 7 will start to boot up.

Step 19 - Finally you have the logon screen. Just type your password and press enter or click on the arrow to logon to Windows 7 for the first time.

Step 20 - After you have logged on to Windows 7 for the first time, you will see similar desktop to the image below. At this point you can start using your computer. However it may not be fully configured. You need to make sure that all the hardware is detected correctly and the necessary device drivers are installed. This can be done from the device manager.

Step 21 - To go to device manager click - Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Device Manager. You will see all your hardware listed as shown on the image below. You need to check if you have any yellow exclamation marks next to the name of the devices, similar to "Multimedia Audio Controller" on the image below. This indicates that the driver has not been installed for this device.

At this stage you can install the driver for this device. To do so, Right Mouse click on Multimedia Audio Controller -> Update Driver Software...

Step 22 - You can choose to "Search automatically for updated driver software" or "Browse my computer for driver software". If you have the driver CD or if the driver is on a USB drive then choose "browse my computer for driver software". Window 7 will search and install the driver from the CD or you can locate the driver manually.

Once you have removed all the yellow exclamation marks from the device manager your Windows 7 configuration would be fully complete.

Step 23 - Finally check if you have successfully activated Windows 7. Click Start Menu -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> System. You will get a window similar to the image below. Towards the bottom you will see Windows is activated followed by your product ID. This shows that your copy of Windows 7 is fully activated.

HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS XP?

All versions of Windows XP CD are bootable. In.order to boot from CD/DVD-ROM you need to set the boot sequence. Look for the boot sequence under your BIOS setup and make sure that the first boot device is set to CD/DVD-ROM.

Perform the following steps to install Windows XP:

1.Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer (DVD/CD-ROM) and restart your computer.

2. If prompted to start from the CD, press SPACEBAR. If you miss the prompt (it only appears for a few seconds), restart your computer to try again.Windows XP Setup begins. During this portion of setup, your mouse will not work, so you must use the keyboard. On the Welcome to Setup page, press ENTER.

3. Almost immediately after Windows setup begins the screen shown to the left will appear. Unless you have the very latest in hardware you probably won't need to press the F6 key to install and SCSI or RAID driver. Pressing F5 at this point allows you to select the proper HAL. A full description of the process is here.

4. Once the initialization process completes, the screen in Figure loads to guide the XP installation process.This guide deals with a clean install and to accomplish that goal select the first option by pressing Enter. If you wanted to use the Recovery Console with an already completed XP installation, pressing R would be the proper choice. F3 ends the current installation process. After pressing Enter, setup will search the drives for an existing XP installation.

5.Press F8 if you agree to the terms or press Esc and start researching alternative operating systems if you don't agree.

6.Press Enter.

8. Once the partition creation has been initiated, the screen in Figure 07 opens and prompts for the size of the partition that will be created. As long as you adhere to the minimum and maximum listed on the screen you have the freedom to set partition sizes as you wish. Keep in mind that there are minimum space requirements to install XP. Set the size of the desired partition and press Enter.

9. Once the partition has been created you are returned to the screen in Figure 08. If there is still unallocated space on the drive and you want to create another partition, highlight the unallocated space entry and press C again to repeat the partition creation process. If you want to change the partition that was just created, highlight it using the up and down arrow keys and press D. A confirmation message will be displayed. Once you're satisfied with the partition scheme, highlight the desired install partition and press Enter.

10. The final step after creating and selecting the install partition is specifying the file system to use for formatting the partition. The available choices will be shown on the screen that appears as in Figure 09. In most cases you'll want to use NTFS. It's far more secure than FAT32 and supports permissions, encryption, and compression. The only reason for considering FAT32 would be data sharing with W9x/Me installations and since this scenario deals with a clean install it's not even a consideration.

12. The XP CD is back in the drive and the partition is being formatted.

15. Finally. A red progress bar that indicates the system will reboot in 15 seconds so the Graphical User Interface portion of setup can begin. If you're still awake, tap the Enter key to speed up that 15 seconds until restart. This is the end of the text portion of setup.

16. This is it - Prepare yourself for what is possibly the longest commercial for a piece of software that has ever been presented, also called the Graphical User Interface phase of XP setup

The majority of this setup phase requires no user intervention. The screens contain a description of Windows XP features. I can only assume they were created in an attempt to kill the time while XP installs and provide a general time to completion reference

The first screen that requires any user input in this phase is Regional and Language Options. If you're using English and you do entry via the keyboard the defaults will suit you fine.

Somehow, typing my name and my company name doesn't exactly give me a warm fuzzy sense of personalization, but that's what the Personalize Your Software screen wants you to enter. I guess you could give some bogus information if it sends a little thrill through you to pull one over on Microsoft.

The screen everybody loves to hate; the dreaded Your Product Key screen. The XP installation process stops here if you don't have one, so for those of you leaving at this point, have a good day.

Installation is going to automatically assign a computer name in the Computer Name and Administrator Password screen. Once you see the name it chooses you'll be grateful it can be easily changed. The important part of this screen is the administrator password. All the begging and pleading in the world can't make you choose something that's hard to guess, but just remember that this one single choice you're making right now is the key into everything you hold near and dear (and private) in the world of computing. It's also essential you remember the password, even if you aren't a case sensitive type of guy/gal.

Unless you prefer to live in the past or future, Date and Time Settings should be set current.

In Network Settings, unless you have a good reason for selecting Custom Settings, go with the Typical Settings. No matter how special you might think your setup is, in most cases it will function perfectly well with the typical settings.
