Colour Me Impressed! Replacements Reunite

It’s been good news all around of late if you happen to be a fan of the Replacements. From brand new songs from front man Paul Westerberg to news yesterday that the former had reunited with ex-bandmate Tommy Stinson to record four cover tunes for a new EP. (The two longtime bandmates had previously confirmed plans to work together for a track to benefit guitarist Slim Dunlap, the former Replacements member who suffered a stroke earlier this year.)

Rolling Stone is now reporting that the collection will released under the Replacements banner rather than another band name. The cover tunes, which were recorded in a day at a Minneapolis studio in late September, are as follows: Busted Up by Slim Dunlap, Everything's Coming Up Roses from the musical Gypsy, I'm Not Sayin' by Gordon Lightfoot, and Lost Highway by Hank Williams.

These songs will be pressed on 10-inch vinyl in a limited run of 250 copies, all of which will be auctioned off online. Proceeds will go to Dunlap.

So, could a full scale Replacements reunion be in the works?

"It's possible," Westerberg said."After playing with Tommy last week, I was thinking, 'All right, let'scrank it up and knock out a record like this.' I'm closer to it now than I was two years ago, let's say that."

Play it Again Sam

Sad news today for Canadian music fans- Sam Sniderman, the founder of Canada’s legendary Sam the Record Man music store, has died.

He was 92.

A release issued today says Mr. Sniderman passed away peacefully in his sleep Sunday, surrounded by loved ones, in Toronto.

Mr. Sniderman opened his flagship store on Toronto’s Yonge Street in 1959. The iconic store closed in 2007, seven years after he retired. It was this very store, with its huge flashing red neon record signs that beckoned music lovers to discover its secrets within. I cannot even begin to tell you of the many pilgrimages I made to that store (and the many others he opened) to find some rare piece of vinyl or CD. But even more than that, this was a place that gave me my musical education. An appreciation for something I value above so much else even today. I’m pretty sure the same can be said for countless others too. These stores were hallowed ground and Sam preached the gospel to everyone who passed through the doors. For that I have the vision of that amazing entrepreneur to thank.

Mr. Sniderman was a member of the Order of Canada, an inductee of the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. Sam was a major promoter of Canadian music. He also received a Governor General award and Honorary doctorates from Ryerson University and the University of Prince Edward Island.

Mr. Sniderman and his brother, Sid opened a small store on College Street in Toronto in 1937 and together they built a chain of Sam the Record Man stores that spanned the country.

The family says a service will be held Tuesday, September 25th, and that an October Memorial Service will be announced.

Rest in peace Sam, I owe you the world.

Thankfully I still have a few bands that raise my pulse rate when I hear about new records in the works. The Mountain Goats are definitely one of those bands. John Darnielle posted at length yesterday about their upcoming new release on their website. It promises to be sublime as always. Read on:

Just Under 1,000 Words About Our New Album
So a simplified timeline of how it went down looks like this: All Eternals Deck came out in March of last year and we toured a whole lot, and midway through all that I came home to celebrate the results of the second ultrasound with Lalitree. June came around so we hied us to the west coast, but first we stopped in Minneapolis, because who doesn't love Minneapolis, and we played a show and Brandon and me shared a room like we always do, and at one point Brandon went out into the hall to talk on the phone to his family and I had an idea for a song so I started working on it, and the narrator turned out to be a person who felt lost and alone and only partially able to keep it together. He was living alone in the Pacific Northwest, and he was fighting the urge to just stop fighting at all, and I recognized his voice because, one, I used to work with a lot of people who spent long seasons in that guy's shoes, and two, I have also been that guy. Who hasn't, if not north of Portland during the rainy season then elsewhere, lost and desperate and trying to swim to the surface?

That song was called "Until I Am Whole," and I played it for Brandon and we both felt like it was touching on some themes I'd circled but never set my claws fully into. So I kept writing through the summer, and in August the baby was born and I'd cradle him in my left arm while writing melodies at the piano with my right, and I said, let Osiris the keeper of the gates be my witness, other songwriters may go soft when they get to be parents but I am going to keep going all the way down into the inner darkness, it will set a good example for the baby, and besides, what am I going to do, suddenly start writing songs about cute things instead of songs about how to wrest cries of triumph from the screaming places? Please. May the baby grow up to spit in my face if I should pose that hard.

Some of the songs I sent to Owen Pallett to arrange for the Transcendental Youth program I did with Anonymous 4 in the spring; meanwhile Peter & Jon & I worked some of the band arrangements out onstage through spring, which is something I'd stopped doing, playing new songs live before tracking them. Shouldn't have ever stopped doing that by the way. Playing new songs rules. These arrangements & performances opened up the songs for me and showed me things about them, and when we hit the studio, I had a plan that was broad enough to let everybody contribute his own voice (a big thing with me; I kind of don't believe in the One Dude Telling Everybody What To Do model of album-making) but focused enough to keep dragging the songs by their hair back to the central point of the record, which has to do with whether anybody has the right to tell people whether their visions are sick or not. Spoiler alert, absolutely nobody has that right, what makes me broken also makes me whole, that is how it works and it's like striking gold when you find that out so keep digging, don't even get me started.

We spent a week recording at Overdub Lane. Brandon Eggleston produced and Matthew E. White did horn arrangements, and afterwards Scott Solter mixed it at Baucom Road, and then I called up Aeron Alfrey from the Satanic Messiah sleeve and he did a new original painting that completely knocks me out and that brings us to the present. The album's called Transcendental Youth, and it's coming out October 2nd on Merge and right around the same time on Tomlab in the UK & Europe and on Moorworks in Japan and on Remote Control in Australia & New Zealand, and I've been getting letters from South America so I'm doing what I can to get it released there. On this last tour that I just got home from, I went into Cloud City with Brandon and recorded four more songs by myself directly to 1/2" tape without overdubs, and from those four, two will be cut directly from the tape to a 7". The first pre-orders of the album will come with a copy of this 7", whose songs will probably be available digitally before long; the actual vinyl single, though, will be the end-point of a truly live all-analog chain that was never converted at any point to ones and zeroes, which as one of Those Guys makes me ridiculously happy. I will tell you more about these two songs later on: one was written for the album but never tracked, the other's been around in half-finished form for a while and finally got the bridge & last verse it deserves.

So that's what I've got. I cannot wait for everybody to hear what we've done this time. It is kind of a family effort for us: the four of us who spend half the year in a tour van together are the four who went into the studio to play & record songs whose choruses grew from things scrawled in notebooks in the back of the van and occasional demos recorded in hotel rooms between tour stops. We will be touring this fall until we run out of places to go or the winged serpent returns, whichever comes first. Here is the tracklisting for the album. I will see you in October!

Love This Giant Collaboration

The long-awaited collaboration between David Byrne and St. Vincent (Annie Clark) will finally hit shelves and mp3 servers September 11^th via 4AD/Todo Mundo. The record is called Love This Giant, and has been in the works for over two years. For the price of your barely used hotmail address the track "Who" can be downloaded below.

The album offers ten collaborative tracks and two written by each musician individually. Vocal duties were split in half. The Dap-Kings and Antibalas help out on the track "The One Who Broke Your Heart".

Dig Out Your Fedora – Leonard Cohen is Coming to Your Town

James Brown was famously labelled as the “hardest working man in show business”. Seems, he might just get run for his legendary monicker as Canada’s favourite “octogenaripoet” Leonard Cohen has announced that his world tour in support of latest album Old Ideas will be extended. In addition to his recently announced European trek, he'll tour North America through November and December. Even better he’s coming to this city (London, ON) on December 11^th and tickets just went on sale today.

If you have never seen Mr. Cohen perform I highly recommend it. If you have, you probably all ready have you tickets.

It’s A Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s the New Jack White Record

Proof positive that there is no off switch in the genius Jack White/ Third Man Records marketing division. Yes indeed, Jack White chose April 1st to release a limited-edition old school flexi disc single by helium balloon from his Third Man Records label headquarters in Nashville.

The track is “Freedom at 21” from White's forthcoming debut solo album, “Blunderbuss,” due April 21st. White and colleagues at Third Man filled 1,000 blue ballons attached the discs and postcards and released them into the sky.

The stunt was described as “an experiment exploring nontraditional forms of record distribution and a way to get records in the hands of people who don't visit record shops.”

White’s reps noted that the balloons were made of biodegradable latex and were attached to the singles with natural twine, to ease potential environmental concerns.

People who find the discs after the balloons burst or return to Earth are encouraged to report where and when they were found and to submit photos, so that White and the Third Man staff can document their travels by way of the postcards attached to the discs.

And you thought some of the ThirdMan releases were pricey on Ebay… The typical recovery rate on similar balloon launches, according to Third Man, is around 10%, indicating that perhaps as few as 100 copies of the record will reach human hands.

An evolving map on Third Man’s website showed two reported discoveries so far in Flintville, Tenn., about 100 miles southeast of Nashville, and another in Huntsville, Ala., about 110 miles to the south. Here's some video from the launch:

David Byrne and Will Oldham Are the Pieces of Shit

Last year I posted a piece on a David Byrne and Will Oldham collaborative effort that saw the two teamed for the soundtrack to This Must Be the Place, a new film from the Italian director Paolo Sorrentino. The film which stars Sean Penn as a retired goth pop star looks intriguing and the soundtrack equally so. FACT now reports that the Vinyl Factory will issue the soundtrack April 23rd, as a 2xLP heavyweight vinyl with gatefold packaging that includes images from the film.

Byrne and Oldham collaborated on five tracks as composer and writer, respectively, recording under the name the Pieces of Shit. Scatological references aside, the soundtrack also features stellar contributions from Jónsi and Alex, Iggy Pop, and others.This Must Be the Place takes its name from the much loved Talking Heads title (This Must Be the Place) Naive Melody. Several renditions of the song are included on the soundtrack, including an updated live version by Byrne. David Byrne also makes an appearance in the film; a fascinating (almost local) experience the musician documented at length in his journal.

The Buck Starts Here

You will recall late last year when R.E.M. officially called it a day. Sad news for music lovers but news today that guitarist Peter Buck has reportedly lined up his first solo full-length endeavour. (While Buck has released numerous albums with side projects such as the Baseball Project, the Minus 5,Tuatatra, Hindu Love Gods and as a member of Robyn Hitchcock's band, he has never released a solo record proper.)

From the Guardian:

One of the band's long-time collaborators, guitarist Scott McCaughey, told Seattle's KIRO 97.3: "Peter's making this record of his." McCaughey offered no further details about the project, saying simply it will be "pretty 'out'". Buck will probably sing on the record, but is unlikely to sing in concert. He is also considering releasing the LP on vinyl only, with no download version.

Looks like 2012 should be lining up to be a stellar music year.

Sled Island organizers have announced the initial headliners performing at this year's festival across multiple venues in Calgary this summer. Running from June 20 - 23, 2012.Canadian songstress Feist leads the pack of initial headliners, along with New York's hardest working rockers The Hold Steady, indie rock pioneers Archers of Loaf (pictured below) and purveyor of party rock Andrew W.K.. UPDATED: Wilco and Billy Bragg Announce Ambitious Mermaid Avenue Release

Wilco and Billy Bragg are set to release a Woody Guthrie tribute called Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions. The ambitious four album set will mark the 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie’s birthday. You may recall this musical collaboration started when Woody's daughter Nora Guthrie and Billy Bragg met at a show in Central Park in New York, and as far back 1997 Wilco and Billy Bragg started recording old Woody Guthrie songs from archived recordings. This lead to the release of Mermaid Avenue. And now there are four volumes, which will be released by Nonesuch Recordings.

"To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Woody’s birth, Nonesuch Records will be releasing ‘Mermaid Avenue: The Complete Sessions’, a four disc set, comprising of remastered versions of Mermaid Avenue Volumes Iand II as well as a new collection of 17 songs from the original sessions,‘Mermaid Avenue Volume III’. The fourth disc will contain ‘Man in the Sand’,Kim Hopkins’ 1999 film, which documents the collaboration between Woody, Wilco and me," said Billy Bragg about the release.

This is just the latest in a string of recent Woody Guthrie tributes, which includes a museum and archive and some star-studded tribute compilations. Although a firm release date has yet to be announced Woody’s birthday on July 14^th might be just the ticket.

John Peel in Space

Massive John Peel Record Collection Will Be Available Online

I remember very well fine tuning my shortwave radio to static filled BBC broadcasts of the late John Peel’s influential radio program. At one time these groundbreaking sessions would serve as the primary source for my voracious musical appetite. This was the one program that I could guarantee I would hear music that barely any one on the planet had ever heard before. Hearing the Fall for the first time was transformational on my young musical sensibilities. I miss the man and everything he did dearly.

John Peel spent decades digging up amazing music and bringing it to the masses, and sure you can still find low quality mp3’s and compilations of some of his sessions if you dig. Great news (thanks Amity) has emerged though at and now we'll get online access to Peel’s entire music collection. It's a new BBC-backed project called The Space, and it goes live in May. The Space will feature music from John Peel's 25 000-deep vinyl LP library as well as 40 000 vinyl singles and CDs.

"We're very happy that we've finally found a way tomake John's amazing collection available to his fans, as he would have wanted," said John Peel's widow Sheila Ravenscroft when speaking to the BBC. The plan for The Space is to make 100 new albums from the collectionavailable online each week, with the goal of hitting 2,500 by October.

"What we're hoping to do is create an online interactive museum which which answers the question 'what is in John Peel's record collection?' but also provides the audience with a visualisation of it.We hope that giving them access to a particular band or their first album orlistening to his show will inspire people to tell us their stories," said Tom Barker, director of the John Peel Centre.

I cannot tell you the palpable joy that this news brings to me. I’ll be sure to update when further details emerge.

“My Own Colors On My Own Canvas”

It was around this time last year that White Stripes fans the world over were mourning the demise of the beloved dichromatic duo. Sure we could depend on their always prolific front man- After all what project did Jack White not have a hand in? The Raconteurs, Dead Weather, Rome, Wanda Jackson and even his own Third Man Records… The inevitable has finally happened though as Jack White III has announced his debut solo LP. Titled Blunderbuss, it's due out April 24th via Third Man/Columbia/XL.

The album was produced by White and recorded at the Third Man studio in Nashville. A statement on the Third Man website reads:

“(Blunderbuss is) an album I couldn’t have released until now. I’ve put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name. These songs were written from scratch, had nothing to do with anyone or anything else but my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas."

The first single is called "Love Interruption" and it's due out on seven-inch vinyl on February 7, backed with the song "Machine Gun Silhouette." The single will go up for sale digitally tonight at midnight EST.
Go here though to hear it streaming. A slightly quieter affair, but I like it.

Of course this video has nothing to do with Jack White but I enjoyed this on Portlandia recently.

2012 Year of the Dragon- Correction: 2012 Year of the Horse

Some great music news today as a report of a new album by Neil Young and Crazy Horse has now been confirmed by Rolling Stone. According to a fan site report (Thrasher's Wheat) Young shared the news over the weekend at the Slamdance Film Festival (in Park City, Utah) at an event with Jonathan Demme to promote their new movie Journeys. The news that he was, “working with the Horse again” was welcome news to their ravenous fanbase. The full line-up of Crazy Horse hasn't backed Young on an album since Broken Arrow in 1996.

According to the report on Thrasher's Wheat, Young said that he's already recorded one album with Crazy Horse and another is in the works. Speculation is high that the first recording will surface sometime in the spring although a firm release date has yet to be announced.

Cross your fingers and toes folks. Perhaps a full tour could be in the offing too.

Belle and Sebastian’s Late Night Tales

The supremely excellent Late Night Tales artist-curated series will release a second compilation by Belle& Sebastian on March 26th. Late NightTales Volume 2. The mix is the follow-up to the Scottish popsters Late Night Tales from 2006. This second ambitious volume will be available digitally and on CD and will feature musical favourites from the band with many drawn from their personal libraries. The compilation features diverse artists like Broadcast, the Pop Group, the Lovin Spoonful, Toro Y Moi, Mulatu Astatke and Pete Shelley. It also includes a Belle & Sebastian cover of the Primitives' 1988 hit single "Crash".

Pack the Suncreen, Coachella 2012 Performers Announced

If there is one music festival that never fails to disappoint, the Coachella Music Festival is just that. Every year, music fans the world over flock to the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, CA for a gathering in the desert quite unlike any other. In most cases a live edition of most Best of Year End list bands coupled with a handful of unbelievable reunion sets, the extended event is a not miss. This year's edition, which runs two consecutive weekends (April 13th-15th, April 20th-22nd) is nothing short of stellar.

Headlining duties for each night will be handled by long-running veteran acts, with the Black Keys on each Friday, Radiohead on the Saturdays, and performances from Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre closing out both Sundays. On top of that, a number of current acts to perform at the California concert event include Bon Iver, M83, Frank Ocean, Girls, Cat Power, Neon Indian, Justice, Florence and the Machine, Beirut, the Shins, Feist, Andrew Bird, St. Vincent, Destroyer, Real Estate, Wild Flag and many more.

In keeping with tradition, the festival will host a number of artists in full reunion mode. (Looks like some of those rumours were true-) Brit-pop stalwarts Pulp, hardcore Swedish punk band Refused, Mike Watt's post-Minuteman spielmeisters fIREHOSE as well as a reunion set from post-rock legends Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Weekend passes have yet to go on sale for this year's Coachella, but you can check out the rest of the line-up on their website. Really though, who was asleep at the switch when they didn’t book the Black Keys, Black Lips, Black Angels and Godspeed You! Black Emperor on the same evening. It only makes sense.

Modeled after major long-running European festivals such as Denmark's Roskilde and England's Glastonbury, Coachella is coming off its second consecutive sellout year, hosting approximately 90 000 people per day. Tickets for the 2011 edition sold out in a record six days.

Late last year Nick Cave announced that his garage-blues project Grinderman, would cease to be. Fortunately though the raucous outfit will be departing, kicking and screaming with a new twelve track remix album called Grinderman 2 RMX was just announced. The outstanding collection features new and previously released mixes of cuts and collarborations from the band’s sophomore album by members of the King Crimson (Robert Fripp), Yeah Yeah Yeahs, UNKLE and the National.

The record is set for release on March 13^th via ANTI- Records in both a two record package CD included as well as those much less tangible digital downloads.

I love Last.FM - I love the site for a number of reasons. Whether it be the networking with likeminded musical Last.FM friends, poring over playlists and previewing new music. Most of all though, I love the graphing capabilities that are generated by scrobbling my music library. (Not captured are the late night music listening sessions in the music room, but illuminating nonetheless.) Overall though, this is pretty accurate and reflects what is playing on my computer as I am drafting reports for work or scribbling emails, blog posts or searching out the next big musical thing.

Apparently I really enjoy the music of The Replacements and Radiohead.

Hmmm… Go figure.

The Best Music of 2011

I haven’t been the most prolific blogger this year but I have listened to a lot of music. A logical equation I suppose as the adage goes – ‘there are only so many hours in the day after all’. That music was a constant in my life should come as no surprise to those who know me well though. The ever present iPod, daily scanning of the tubes, a host of great live shows and darkening the entrance of every record store I find has uniquely prepared me to draft a comprehensive Best of Music List this year.

And what a year it has been... New records from the heavy hitters like Radiohead, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey; sometimes they make it look so easy. But this year it was the newcomers that kept the musical fires within me alive. The gentle Canadiana folk of the Weather Station, James Blake’s nervous dubstep and EMA’s noisy rancor. The stuff of greatness. The stuff that keeps me forever seventeen on the inside. The stuff that makes me look forward to what lies down the road for 2012.

I was very fortunate to be around when the Talking Heads were in their heyday. I remember well their rapid succession of record releases that only got better as they progressed through a career most bands could only dream of. Save for True Stories perhaps; (I’ve still never truly warmed to that one.) That being said, the bands rich legacy of music and ground breaking videos still thrill when they pop up on my musical radar. Good news then this holiday season as the band is set to release some rare video to thrill old and new fans alike. The DVD, Chronology pulls together live performances from across Talking Heads' career. It starts with their earliest days at CBGB and The Kitchen in New York City in the mid-seventies, through their breakthrough years in the late seventies and on to global success in the eighties. They completed their last tour in 1983 although they would continue to make very successful albums throughout the eighties before officially breaking up in 1991. The DVD concludes with their "reunion" performance of "Life During Wartime" on their induction into the Rock `n' Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002.

From David Byrne:

This was very much a live band—at least until the late 80s. The initial recordings emerged out of what we played live, what worked in that context and how we refined our skills playing together. For a lot of musicians in the digital era this is not always the case. These days, the record often comes first and then how it is staged comes later.

A deluxe version of this is packaged in a hardback cover with a 48 page book containing photographs and an unexpurgated Lester Bangs essay written as a review of the Fear Of Music album for The Village Voice in 1979 but only ever published in a heavily edited version.

I once asked a friend about the enduring appeal of Leonard Cohen and just what was it that keeps it going. “It’s his dependability…”, she replied. “Leonard Cohen is an institution and he never lets me down.” That comment came to mind last month when it was announced that Cohen would be returning with a new record called Old Ideas. You certainly can’t get any more dependable than those and Cohen’s ‘golden voice’.

Cohen’s press release explains:

“As I grew older, I understood that instructions came with this voice. And the instructions were these...Never to lament casually. And if one is to express the great inevitable defeat that awaits us all, it must be done within the strict confines of dignity & beauty."

Old Ideas is Cohen's 12th album for Columbia Records, and was produced by Patrick Leonard, Anjani Thomas, Ed Sanders and Dino Soldo. The album also features stalwart Cohen guest vocalists Dana Glover, Sharon Robinson, The Webb Sisters (Hattie and Charley Webb) and Jennifer Warnes.

Old Ideas will be available on January 31^st but pre-order on his site today for an instant download of “Show Me the Place”

Radiohead Live Dates Announced

News broke a few days ago that Radiohead when Ed O'Brien pronounced the band would be "on the road from the end of February to November"; Alas, sadly no firm dates accompanied the announcement. Good news then, all of you excited event planners and calendar jugglers the first announcement of the band's live plans has just come out.

The initial announcement is ten US tour dates, which begin at Miami's American Airlines Arena on February 27^th and end at Glendale's Jobing.com Arena on March 15^th. Rest assured, the band are expected to announce more dates in the coming weeks, but have not said when this will be as yet.

Exciting news though, this might be just the excuse you need to break the monotony of winter for a trip to the American south. Looks like nice sized venues too!
