Who Else Shall We Let Perish?

Our minds are overwhelmed, our hearts are broken and our tears flow as we mourn the deaths of 19 precious children and 2 teachers as we ask who else shall we let perish? However our pain cannot compare to the sorrow and heartbreak of the families who lost loved ones in the Uvalde Elementary School shooting.

Nor does it compare to the resurfaced trauma of the families and survivors of recent mass shootings like the racially motivated Tops supermarket shooting in Buffalo and the Asian church shooting in California all in the last 2 weeks.

Every day more than 110 Americans are killed with guns. The frequency of mass shootings, gun violence and the death toll in a nation not at war is mind boggling not just to Americans but to the world. Especially to countries where guns which are weapons of mass destruction are not glorified in their culture, seen as a coming of age trophy or made easily accessible without strict, thorough and effective, criminal and psychological background checks.

Countries like Australia, the UK, Norway, New Zealand and Canada who wisely and successfully adjusted their laws after experiencing a devastating mass shooting to ensure the safety of their citizens, both young and old. Schools, churches, supermarkets and train stations should not be war zones. Weapons created for war should not be in the hands of civilians in a land that is not at war because when there is no real enemy to fight against the only ones left to harm are each other.

Unfortunately that is exactly what's been happening in America for decades and more lives will be senselessly destroyed if we do not implement meaningful and effective change. First with our mindset and then with our voices and actions. Read on to learn how you can help to end gun violence.

How You Can Help End Gun Violence

May the pain and heartbreak we currently feel not make us numb and turn into hopelessness. Instead may they become the driving force that catapults us into positive, change bringing and lasting action from our homes to our courtrooms and government buildings where laws are created and amended.

In the days and months that follow may our love speak loud and our actions speak even louder to end this plague of gun violence in our land because silence, shifting the blame and inaction is equal to complicity and inhumanity.

Thousands of innocent civilians mainly women and children are displaced and are now seeking safety in neighboring countries. Millions are at risk and trapped in Ukraine. There are also non Ukrainians citizens who lived, worked, studied or were refugees in Ukraine who need our empathy and help.

We can help them all right now by supporting the non profit organizations and NGO’s that are already on the ground providing aid in Ukraine and also in the European countries who have opened their borders to those fleeing war.

Black History Month: Celebrating Women Trailblazers.

This Black History Month we are featuring the stories and contributions of 10 African American Women Trailblazers who had to overcome not only gender inequality but also racial adversity. We are inspired by their choice to defy the status quo and by their spirit of perseverance, which helped them to break down barriers, shatter glass ceilings and become trailblazers for both women and people of color.

We hope that their life experiences and their contributions to both American and world history are told not only one month a year but are taught in schools, commemorated in books, reimagined in documentaries and films etc.

Learning about these incredible women trailblazers and their impact will help to influence the lives of young girls, women and society as a whole and their stories can be a source of inspiration and empowerment.

It also presents an opportunity for everyone to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of women of color. Which will help to eradicate negative stereotypes, be a catalyst for positive social change and create an environment for fostering racial and gender based equality.

Read on to discover the 10 African American Women Trailblazers whose lives will surely inspire you.

1. Phillis Wheatley

She was the first African American and third woman to publish a book of poems. The publication in London of her 'Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral' on September 1, 1773, brought her fame both in England and the American colonies. Figures such as George Washington praised her work.

2. Rebecca Lee Crumpler

She was the first African American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States after studying at the New England Female Medical College, in 1864. In addition to being a physician she was also a nurse and author.

3. Charolotte E Ray

She was the first African American female lawyer and graduated from Howard University School of Law in 1872.She was also the first woman admitted to the District of Columbia Bar, and the first woman admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. Her admission was used as a precedent by women in other states who sought admission to the bar.

4. Mary Elizabeth Mahoney

In 1879, Mahoney became the first African American to graduate from an American school of nursing. She was also the first African American woman to study and work as a professionally trained and licensed nurse in the United States.

5. Bessie Coleman

She was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman and first Native-American to hold a pilot license not just in the US but in the world. She earned her pilot license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale on June 15, 1921. She was also the first black person to earn an international pilot's license.

6. Maria P Williams

She was the first Black woman to produce, write, and act in her own movie titled 'The Flames of Wrath' in 1923. The former Kansas City teacher was also an activist, and detailed her leadership skills in the book she authored titled 'My Work and Public Sentiment'.

7. Jane Matilda Bolin

A pioneer in law, Jane Bolin was the first Black woman to attend Yale Law School and in 1939, she became the first Black female judge in the United States where she served for 10 years. One of her significant contributions throughout her career was working with private employers to hire people based on their skills, as opposed to discriminating against them because of their race.

8. Gwendolyn Brooks

She was the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for 'Annie Allen', and she served as poetry consultant to the Library of Congress, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position. She was also the poet laureate of the State of Illinois.

9. Mary Jackson

She was a mathematician and aerospace engineer, who started her career as a computer at the segregated West Area Computing division in 1951. After taking advanced engineering classes she became NASA's first African American female engineer in 1958. She worked at NASA for 34 years and during her tenure she helped to hire and promote female engineers and scientists. Her story was featured in the book and film 'Hidden Figures'.

10. Mae Carol Jemison

She is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS-47 mission, during which she orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12–20, 1992.

Women Who Inspire: 10 African American Women Trailblazers.

March is recognized around the world as Women's History Month and this year we have decided to do things a little different by featuring the stories and contributions of women who are not as well known or celebrated. Although they had to overcome not only gender inequality but also racial adversity.

We are inspired by their choice to defy the status quo and by their spirit of perseverance, which helped them to break down barriers, shatter glass ceilings and become trailblazers for both women and people of color.

It also presents an opportunity for everyone to recognize and celebrate the achievements and contributions of women of color. Which will help to destroy negative stereotypes, be a catalyst for positive social change and create an environment for fostering racial and gender based equality.

Read on to discover the 10 African American Women Trailblazers who are inspiring us right now...

1. Phillis Wheatley

She was the first African American and third woman to publish a book of poems. The publication in London of her 'Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral' on September 1, 1773, brought her fame both in England and the American colonies. Figures such as George Washington praised her work.

2. Rebecca Lee Crumpler

She was the first African American woman to become a doctor of medicine in the United States after studying at the New England Female Medical College, in 1864. In addition to being a physician she was also a nurse and author.

3. Charolotte E Ray

4. Mary Elizabeth Mahoney

5. Bessie Coleman

She was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman and first Native-American to hold a pilot license not just in the US but in the world. She earned her pilot license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale on June 15, 1921. She was also the first black person to earn an international pilot's license.

6. Maria P Williams

7. Jane Matilda Bolin

A pioneer in law, Jane Bolin was the first Black woman to attend Yale Law School and in 1939, she became the first Black female judge in the United States where she served for 10 years. One of her significant contributions throughout her career was working with private employers to hire people based on their skills, as opposed to discriminating against them because of their race.

8. Gwendolyn Brooks

She was the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize in 1950 for 'Annie Allen', and she served as poetry consultant to the Library of Congress, becoming the first Black woman to hold that position. She was also the poet laureate of the State of Illinois.

9. Mary Jackson

She was a mathematician and aerospace engineer, who started her career as a computer at the segregated West Area Computing division in 1951. After taking advanced engineering classes she became NASA's first African American female engineer in 1958. She worked at NASA for 34 years and during her tenure she helped to hire and promote female engineers and scientists. Her story was featured in the book and film 'Hidden Figures'.

10. Mae Carol Jemison

She is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Jemison joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1987 and was selected to serve for the STS-47 mission, during which she orbited the Earth for nearly eight days on September 12–20, 1992.

5 Integral Life Lessons For 2021.

The past year will be etched in our memories for years to come, it was filled with unprecedented, historical and record shattering natural disasters, a global pandemic, unfathomable loss of life in such a short period of time, worldwide social and racial justice outcries, economic shut downs, record unemployment and migration from cities and this was all in addition to the personal struggles that each year brings.

It was also a year of increasing our awareness, slowing down, connecting deeper, practising kindness and acts of caring, even while we physically distanced from each other. It came with many life lessons and gave us time to reflect and remember what truly matters and to gain a clearer perspective and even change our perspectives on major beliefs and social issues.

The five integral life lessons we've shared below stemmed from pivotal moments that we all witnessed, experienced together or are vividly aware of. We hope that they will be used for reflection and as a source of inspiration to motivate and empower you for the days, weeks and months ahead and whatever they may bring.

1. Life is fragile and our time here is limited, let's not waste it and instead let us rise to the challenge of facing each new day with gratitude and zeal.

2. Sorrow and pain can unite us.

4. Real heroes inspire us every day with their selflessness. They lead by example as they actively and continually choose to sacrifice their own lives to save and protect the lives of others.
