Manchetts Recovery has had an exciting spring and start to summer, filled with community involvement and truck shows while working a 24/7 availability!

We sponsored the Burwell Community Fire & Rescue Station with Easter eggs for their hunt in April and Manchetts made it possible to give an unforgettable experience for Burwell FC U14's to visit the home of England's national teams at St Georges Park.

Our Facebook Truckfest Lincoln by Night video featuring our 2014 Scania Highline (Grandad truck) V8 R520 received over 58,000 views! The Grandad truck was also invited to the prestigious 14th Edition Truck Show in Ciney, Belgium!

We participated in the Stretham Feast, Wilburton beer fest, Burwell Carnival and Haddenham feast too! Sponsored Haughey Honey, and celebrated winning "Best of the Rest" for our Merc 6x6 off-road vehicle and 3rd place for best rigid at the Stonham Truck Show.

These accomplishments reflect our team's dedication to keeping our working trucks in top condition. Thank you to Adrian for his impressive engineering and wiring, Blaine, Andrew, Kev, Martyn, Jack, Sam, Dean, and their partners and families for their support and commitment, not forgetting the team back at base, Burwell, Ingham, Waterbeach and Ipswich.

Exciting Developments at Manchetts Recovery!

In May, Manchetts Recovery took a significant step forward by moving into our new premises in Claydon, Ipswich. This strategic move has fostered organic growth, allowing us to establish connections with new customers in the area.

One of the standout jobs in the area was our impressive vehicle movement of a 1918 Steam Engine for the Bill Kemble collection, which was showcased at the award-winning TNS stand, celebrating their 150th anniversary at the Suffolk Show. The engines we moved were sold by TNS in 1918 to the Kemble family and are still in the Kemball family today. We also recovered several horseboxes home after engine and electrical failure from the Suffolk show as well as exhibiting there. We were proud to be supporting local business's and families.

A special thank you goes out to George and Blaine for their daily involvement and dedication to ensuring smooth operations in Ipswich and for managing these remarkable vehicle movements.

Other exceptional vehicle movements have been by Allelys heavy haulage moving abnormal loads with an overall length of 89.161meters and a total combined weight of 706020kg! Our team Dean and Gregg have been assisting them in moving any vehicles parked in their way across the 3 counties!

We attended the Suffolk show to show case our specialist equipment and to network in the new community. Thanks to the team for three long arduous days setting up, chatting to potential customers and potential employees and taking it all down on the 3rd day. It was a great success thanks to Lindsay Powell, Andy Holliday, Jeni Davy, Sam Manchett-Arnold, Dean Fuller Gemma, Mandy & Sean Manchett.

The history of Manchetts as a family concern is quite unique and very successful in its own right, mention the name Manchetts in the village of Burwell, Cambridgeshire and most people in the extended community will know or will have dealt with them in one way or another. My meeting was with Sean Manchett at a site just outside the village of Burwell, which is home to the group.

Many of you reading this article will be familiar with Manchetts Recovery, but if you live in the village, you will probably have had your car serviced or repaired by them, recovered by them, bought your fuel from them or if you have done neither of the above, it is almost certain you will have bought a loaf of bread or a newspaper off them.

That is how well known the Manchett name is to this community. Since Sean’s Grandfather George Manchett set up shop in the village back in 1961 selling and repairing lawn mowers and agricultural equipment, the Manchett family have broadened their interests in line with their expansion and the changing of the times.

George had two sons; Peter and Ray and eventually handed on his business to them. The brothers decided that the garage business would not support both families and amicably decided to split. Sean’s parents Peter & Anne Manchett continued the business in Burwell and ran the fuel forecourt with a small fags and fan belts shop alongside a vehicle workshop.

Peter is now long retired and the business is now a total family affair, with his three sons, daughter and their respective partners now running the various business interests of the Manchett family. Eldest brother Glenn manages the export business in Zambia and assists in the operation of the commercial workshops along with his youngest brother Robert who also manages the body shop and overall business development. Sean oversees all financial aspects of the group as well as managing the recovery aspect of the business. Helen, a trained nurse stepped out of the health industry to manage the supermarket and is responsible for that loaf of bread and the daily newspapers. Helens husband, Chris is responsible for the Renault franchise and manages the Renault service centre in one of the surrounding villages.

There’s a story behind the supermarket side of the business. The petrol station site always had a shop element to it but some time ago a major supermarket were interested in developing the site. The family felt it was in the best interest of the village to develop it themselves, so a massive investment went into modernising the petrol station and the then car show room and converting it into a 2500 sq ft convenience store.

Sean’s wife Mandy looks after the marketing for the group, she has been responsible for the development of the livery seen on the recovery vehicles and all signage. She pays particular attention to the social media aspect. You only have to put their name into a search engine to be inundated with green and yellow results. Sean believes brand image is very important including the fleet, which is kept in first class condition.

Running a multi-million pound family business that employs over 130 staff, has the potential to be sensitive but Sean tells me that it works extremely well. Across the road from the convenience store and forecourt is the commercial workshop side to the business with a vast site catering for commercial repairs and a Renault commercial dealership.

The future development for Manchetts is to bring together the Renault truck and car service points. A two-acre site a few miles away in Newmarket, Suffolk is currently under construction. The new site will house the ATL for VOSA testing and this will continue to be an integral part of their operational strategy.

Sean Manchett isn’t what I would call a typical recovery operator. He is very astute and has a real handle on his business. Yes, he is very knowledgeable about every portion of the business but he, alongside his brothers and brother in law support their team by continuing to be hands on, attending recovery jobs when necessary.

I hope that doesn’t sound disrespectful, but many operators I talk to are so engrossed in their business that they don’t always have time to develop structured business plans.

Sean doesn’t fit into this stereotype. He insists on financial management, by checking the figures almost daily across the group and knows exactly his vehicle costs and depreciation down to the last penny.

This attention to detail by the family has allowed the business to expand. They even export end of life vehicles to Zambia from their commercial premises by the container load.

When it comes to recovery, Manchetts work for most of the major clubs with the exception of Green Flag and RAC. They have just handed back their RAC contract but the Green Flag loss was forced on them four years ago.

“I don’t want to dwell on Green Flag because so many words have already been written about it,” said Sean. “But it was difficult to take at the time. However, moving forward we replaced the void with our hunger for work”.

Having a firm hand on the financial performance of the company has allowed Sean to invest in six Dyson 14-ton Midlum Crew Cabs recently but they still use Boniface for their heavies.

Why the investment in so many 14 toners?

“Quite simply, they give me greater flexibility with my operation,” said Sean. “If we have the chance of a return load I need to know that I have the weight capability to handle almost any type of load. For instance, two days ago I was able to take on a return load from Ipswich of four commercial lawn mowers. To allow for that flexibility of load I have an R Licence in place.”

Sean also sees intervention work as the way forward with modern day recoveries. As I walked round the commercial workshops I noticed a coach on the ramps.

“That was a recovery job a few days ago,” commented Sean. “It was a difficult one which needed some work before we could under lift it. The low loader wouldn’t have worked because of the height but we eventually managed to solve the problem and get it back to the yard. The coach operator asked us to give him a price to fix it and it has turned out to be a massive job for us. Without our facilities and without us being able to respond late at night to the initial recovery, we would have missed out on a major job.”

Manchetts run over fifty trucks from their Burwell base, with a satellite base in Bury St Edmunds. Both the Burwell and Bury St Edmunds depots have full police SOCO facilities to cater for the two police contracts, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

Manchetts have invested in the latest technology and are the first in the country to use the new TomTom tablets, which streamlines with their telematics integration. This not only gives Sean a live view of where the trucks are, but a real-time information on the way the trucks are driven, fuel consumption and overall running costs. Telematics is very important to his business and something that his eldest daughter, Gemma has been instrumental throughout the implementation of new software whilst working for the company. She is now taking on a Masters Degree in Management.

Sean says “Every recovery man has sat at his dinner table with their families and spoken about business”. He is proud that his daughter Gemma has grown to have a keen interest in the industry as well as the business. She even insisted on passing and achieving her Class 2 licence! This is indicative of the way the Manchett family have committed to the family business.

Sean is optimistic about the future, particularly about vehicle recovery. Sean strives to encourage professionalism in the industry.

“I am confident looking forward but it is most important in our industry to almost micromanage your business. Investment in modern equipment is vital but that can only happen when you are in full control of your operation. I strongly believe we should not undersell the service we deliver 24/7 365 days a year. We are professionals”.

The future is indeed very promising for the various elements of the Manchetts business. Recent investment highlights that and the company are a great example of developing other profit areas alongside the recovery side of the business.

I wanted to let you know how grateful I am to a gentleman called David who works in your Burwell office, HGV MOT Department.

On recently booking our vehicle in for it's first HGV MOT I discovered it had no Vehicle Plate or Type Approval something I now know it should of been given by the DVLA and VOSA at the point of manufacture.

This time last week I knew nothing of these requirements and despite speaking to the Renault Dealer we purchased the vehicle from, the DVLA and VOSA I drew a complete blank, until I spoke to David
He very kindly, but unnecessarily rang VOSA for me, he established what we were missing and advised me what I needed to do to move the situation forward. This I did and hey presto!! this morning I have a Plate and Type Approval for our vehicle.

I have spoken to David this morning to re-book the MOT and have expressed my thanks for all his help, i guess i just want to acknowledge his kindness to you as his employer, i think certainly from my point of view it's really rather unusual these days to find people like David who obviously take a great deal of pleasure and pride in their work. Celebrating Mr & Mrs Peter and Anne Manchetts' 50^th wedding anniversary this May and being in business 50 years since 2011 Manchetts Recovery have introduced a new special edition MAN interstater MK6H maxi reach low line heavy recovery vehicle to their fleet.

Director Sean Manchett says “heavy recovery operator Sam Neal, recently asked his partner Phili to marry him and she said yes so we named the truck he drives and operates after her. Not many young men seem to get married these days and out of respect for Sam and Phili we thought it would be very fitting since we are celebrating 50 years in business and mum & dads 50^th wedding anniversary this year.”

The MAN chassis is an Interstater Mk6 H Maxi reach low line the lowest and longest under reach on the world market, this unit is fitted with twin 30,000lb winches along with rear hydraulic stabilizer legs to aid in the winching and recovery of broken down and accident damaged vehicles.

Along with these impressive features the vehicle is fitted with a Pioneer axle which is manufactured by Boniface to give increased lift and tow performance and to keep the overhang to a minimum.

The custom designed and made body compliments the chassis and is tailored to suit each individual operator’s needs and requirements. Stainless steel is used in the manufacture of the body together with coach style locks and internal hinges giving the truck smooth lines that complement the MAN chassis.

A Stealth flyer and high body give the truck the presence to turns heads wherever it goes and is a fine addition to the growing fleet of over 50 vehicles at Manchetts’ Rescue and recovery in Burwell Cambridgeshire.

Last Friday, 19th April, I was unfortunate enough to have to call the AA when my bike packed up, just after leaving the A14. This call was passed to Manchetts recovery main contrator in the area for the AA.

Within 20 minutes of my original call, someone contacted me to explain there would be a delay as Manchetts wanted to send a vehicle suitable to recover a bike. The timescale given was an hour and half.

Manchetts recovery 'man' arrived well within this time and was very helpful. The bike had suffered complete electrical failure. He loaded it up and took it home for us as requested, leaving it with someone in the house. This saved us an hours journey back home and enabled us to continue as planned, if slightly delayed. Hi Peter,

I found your email address on the website, and I just wanted to give huge thanks to two of the members of your recovery team who were working on Friday evening (12^th April) . And I am hoping you can pass on our thanks to them.

Myself and another female colleague were travelling back from Kent on Friday evening after a work event, when both headlights on our company pool car failed, we were on the M11 at the time, and it was dark, so couldn’t see to drive, and had to pull onto the hard shoulder on the M11 / A11 slip road.

Our company pool car was covered for breakdown, unfortunately they were extremely busy and we had to wait for 1 and a half hours on the hard Shoulder in the cold and dark. Clearly they outsourced the job to yourselves, and one of your recovery men was on the phone to me trying to work out our exact location, when a man in a van pulled onto the hard shoulder a few metres behind us and turned all his lights off, I told your driver what was happening, and he was great, and calm, for us we knew this really wasn’t right as he had turned all his lights off, and hadn’t got out to ask if we needed help, your driver know something was wrong too, and instructed us to get in the car immediately and lock the doors, and try and start the engine (the car worked just couldn’t see to drive with no lights, he stayed on the phone asking me what was happening, as I said the man was watching us, at which point he told us to drive slowly on the hard shoulder with our hazards on to a safer location, and he would find us, again he stayed on the phone asking me what was happening – the man in the van was now following behind us on the hard shoulder.

We ended up somehow at the Genome centre at Hinxton - where a security guard came to help us. Your telephone controller also called me back immediately to check we were safe, as he was about to call the Police.

You recovery man then came to us there and fixed our lights.

Both of them showed real concern for our safety, and were hugely comforting in what was a very frightening situation. So I just wanted to say a big thank you to them both, they definitely went above and beyond, and the instructions given to me on the phone may have saved us from something much worse than a broken down vehicle.

Morning gents,

I'd never used Manchettes until Sunday just gone when I managed to fill my diesel car with unleaded (whoops), and I wanted to give my feedback on what I felt was a truly superb service.

I made the error at 18:20, called your officeat 18:30 and got straight on to Keith who had one of your chaps out to me by 20:00and my car was back on the road by 21:30.

Keith's customer service was fantastic, providing a prompt friendly service. He even called me back 20 mins after I booked in to let me know I wasn't the only one that made that silly mistake after a flurry of calls for the same reason which did make me feel much better about my stupidity and I really appreciated it. Your mobile chap arrived, got straight on and had the car back on the road in no time.

Ultimately your prompt service allowed me to shake off the incident with no lasting frustration because you had me back on the road so quickly, meaning it had no affect on my plans, at 18:20 on the Sunday I was confident my meetings in Nottingham they next day would need to be cancelled but they were not allowing me to get on with my work.

I can't thank your team enough.
