In a reverse sexism move the McCain campaign has been asked to quit shielding Sarah palin from press. It is very important that she speaks to the press considering shes going to be closer to the presidency than any women in history, and we know close to nothing about her polical views. So We here at VP-Palin demand "Let Sarah Palin go"

Apparently, despite Alaska's relatively meager population, it has some of the highest rates for violence against women. The rape rate is 2.5 times higher than the national average. I find this a very troubling statistic, but is there really much more that legislature can do to protect women? Probably not, but each city, county and state does have a responsibility to investigate these crimes and charge violent offenders.

In most places in the US, legislature has been passed to provide rape kits at no cost to the victims. Charging victims for rape kits as part of a police investigation was banned by Alaska legislature in 2000, but Palin reportedly cut the miscellaneous costs budget by more than half while she was mayor of Wasilla. Rape kits were paid for by this fund, but were not specifically mentioned.

Police Chief Fannon, who was appointed by Palin, has been adamantly against paying for rape kits with taxpayer money. He says that rape kits could cost the city atleast $5,000 more per year.

Although Palin cut funding for several programs that helped female victims of violence, the McCain-Palin campaign claims that Palin increased funding for shelters that house and care for victims of rape and domestic violence, and that it is a priority for her. Many people are asking how a mayor could govern a city without being aware of the police chief's endeavors.

Trooper Troubles - The Plot Thickens

There is an ongoing investigation about Governor Palin's dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan and the possible connection with her sister's ex-husband, State Trooper Michael Wooten. It turns out this investigation may be halted by a law suit filed Tuesday against two Alaska senators and a former prosecutor, who have all been investigating Monegan's dismissal.

The suit against the investigators was filed by five republican lawmakers. Because the senators and former prosecutor are democrats, they

"are conducting a McCarthyistic investigation in anunlawful,biased, partial and partisan political manner in order to impact the upcoming Alaska general and national presidential elections."

Since the suit was filed by five republicans, might they also be biased and partisan? And might they also be trying to impact the upcoming elections in their favor by impeding the investigation?

I'm not suggesting that either side is right or wrong, but people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Why must everything in politics be biased and partisan? It seems as if we have a civil war going on between two strong, opposing factions in this country. So, I don't think either side has any right to call the other "biased", it's very clear that they both are.

Why does it matter if Monegan was fired because he refused to take complaints regarding Trooper Wooten seriously? Well, if it were true it would prove that Palin has been lying about the issue. It would also suggest to me that she might be prone to make decisions emotionally; for example, trying to get the trooper fired because of a family dispute. I think I would rather have a logical and rational leader, personally.

Governor Palin recently commented in an interview with Charlie Gibson that she thinks Obama may regret not having picked Hillary Clinton to be his running mate. She's not the only one that's saying so, many people online are now criticizing Barack's VP choice and Palin has undoubtedly stolen the spotlight.

Hypothetically, what would the race be like if Obama changed his mind and Biden bowed out to allow Hillary a chance to be on the presidential ticket? Palin and Clinton have been rather respectful of one another thus far, but how interesting an election it would be if the two of them were pitted against each other.

I was personally surprised that Clinton wasn't the vice presidential candidate to begin with and it seems she would be an even better choice for Obama now that Sarah Palin is on the republican ticket. It does seem like an excellent way for Barack Obama to get the democrats back into the spotlight. How is it that the democrats are passing up the opportunity for a good publicity stunt?

From Blue Collar to Green Room

Sarah Palin talked about how her first job experiences contribute to her career as Governor of Alaska. She explains how she started out with a lot of blue collar work growing up, such as babysitting and working as a waitress, and how those jobs helped her develop a solid work ethic. She equates her work as a waitress with her role as Governor, in that she is waiting on those who have elected her. Her babysitting experience has been useful as well.

"As for the babysitting part, some days I do feel like we're doing a little bit of that also."

Sarah also had valuable insight to offer the next generation of American leaders. Independence from foreign sources of energy is essential to our National Security and defense of our homeland. A secure supply of domestic energy, such as oil and natural gas from Alaska, can help to secure the United States and revitalize our economy as well.

What's Up with Wasilla?

Sarah Palin was Mayor of the city of Wasilla, Alaska, for two terms after serving on the city council for 4 years. This is also where she lived as a child, graduated from highschool, and became Miss Wasilla in 1984.

Wasilla, located almost 30 miles from Anchorage, had a population of about 7,000 at that time, but it has since grown to nearly 10,000. That census estimate in 2007 actually makes it the 4th largest city in Alaska.

About 30% of Wasilla's workers commute to Anchorage, those who remain in Wasilla to work are mostly in local or state government jobs, or retail and service.

Although the town itself was only incorporated in 1974, settlers were lured there as early as 1917 by the Alaska Railroad as well as nearby gold fields and mines. In 1994 there was a ballot initiative to move the state capital to Wasilla, but 116,000 Alaskan residents voted against it, defeating the 96,000 who voted for the relocation.

So, while Wasilla may be a very important part of Alaska, the responsibilities of the Mayor of Wasilla (or the Governor of Alaska for that matter) cannot even be compared to that of most US cities. How do we know that Sarah (or even Obama) can handle the responsibilities of helping to govern an entire country? Especially at a time when there is admittedly a lot to be fixed.

Frugal Spending Tips with Sarah

While running for Governor of Alaska, Sarah criticized the budget plans of her competitors. Instead of doubling tourism funding, Palin suggested creating a more efficient marketing plan.

"It doesn't necessarily cost more money to market," Palin said at a gubernatorial debate in 2006.

Even more recently, during her speech at the 2008 Republican National Convention, Governor Palin shared with us some of the sacrifices she has personally made to reduce state spending, such as driving herself to work and selling the governor's luxury jet.

"And I thought we could muddle through without the governor's personal chef--although I've got to admit that sometimes my kids sure miss her."

She did effectively reduce Alaska's general fund spending by $124 million in March of 2007, after declaring her goal of $150 million in January. However, many people are upset by the cuts she has made, specifically her line-item veto in June which cut funding to some non-profit organizations like Covenant House Alaska, a charity program for young people.

"The rivalry between the Democratic and Republican tickets for president could shift from the ballot box to the hardwood if Barack Obama has his way."

During an interview today on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" an ABC viewer apparently asked whether Obama would agree to a 1-on-1 with Governor Palin on the basketball court. Sarah earned the nickname Sarah Barracuda on her highschool basketball team.

"You know, I would play her a game of horse," said Obama. "She looks like she’s got some game."

"On the basketball court, I think I’d stand up pretty well," he said.

"I know she’s a sharpshooter, and I know that -- I probably wouldn’t do target practice with her," he said. "I think she’d be a better shot than me."

I wonder if it truly crossed his mind to bet the election on a game of horse? Anything but the real issues, I suppose. The media is not asking any pertinent questions to help inform the public about who we'll really have in the White House after the election.

Sure, surprise parties are fun, but… "Surprise! Give me more money!" and "Surprise! We're going to war!" are not what I have in mind.

Unethical Ethics Supervisor?

After having chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, serving as Ethics Supervisor and accusing some of her republican colleagues of being "unethical", it seems Sarah herself is now under investigation for using her power inappropriately.

Governor Palin refuses to explain why Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired, but the common consensus locally seems to point to a personal dispute with State Trooper Michael Wooten. While he was suffering through a messy divorce with Palin's sister, the family made many complaints about Wooten, probably with the intention of getting him fired.

The head of state troopers and the Executive Director of the Alaska Public Safety Employees Association however, agreed that the allegations against Wooten were unfounded and personal. Many people suppose that Monegan was dismissed by Palin because of a grudge she held about the complaints being ignored. The Governor's office stated that Monegan was offered a position as Executive Director of the Alcohol Beverage Control, which he felt was a demotion and refused to take it.

"We are moving the Department of Public Safety forward under new leadership."

The troopers' union says the statement still does not explain why the Commissioner was fired.

Sarah Palin was born in Idaho in 1964, but moved to Alaska as an infant. Her mother was a school secretary and her father was a science teacher. In 1984, she won a college scholarship finishing second in the Miss Alaska pageant. After attaining her BS in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987, Sarah went on to become a sports reporter in Anchorage, Alaska.

Todd Palin
Her husband Todd was her highschool sweetheart, with whom she reportedly eloped in 1988. He owns a commercial fishing business and also works as an oil field production operator for BP.

Track Palin

Their son, Track, was born in 1989. He has enlisted in the US Army and is soon to be deployed in Iraq.

Bristol Palin
Their daughter, Bristol, who was born in 1990, has been a subject of much debate and many rumors. She is now 5 months pregnant and reportedly intends to keep the baby and marry the father, although she is only 17 years old.

Willow Palin

Willow, Palin's second daughter and middle child (born in 1995), is often photographed holding baby brother, Trig. She says that she wasn't informed about her brother's disability but states "he's my brother and I love him".

Ready for War?

Sarah Palin has professed time and again that she supports our troops, she has thanked them repeatedly for their service in our military, and her 18 year old son has enlisted in the United States Army (which seems to be uncommon among the republicans who support the war). So, it seems she respects and appreciates our men and women in uniform, but is she really prepared to make decisions about our national security?

"My one and only son, my 18-year- old, he just signed up for the United States Army. He is at boot camp right now and I'm thinking, you know, this kid is doing all that he can within his power to help secure and defend the United States. Every elected official had better be asking themselves, are you doing as much also? Are you doing all that you can?"

She answered the question on national security with the same question, really. I would expect more from our Vice Presidential candidate, so I think she needs to elaborate on her foreign policy. Supporting the troops is one thing; no politician wants to tell the American people that he or she has no respect for our soldiers in Iraq.

She did say, however, that she would like Bush to have an exit strategy in 2006. If she and McCain are elected, it will become her responsibility to help create that exit strategy. Can she handle it?

"I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe."

I'm afraid statements like the one above will no longer cut it. As a candidate for Vice president, the American people need real answers from Sarah Palin.

Sex Ed with Sarah

As a mother of five, I think we can assume Governor Palin must know a thing or two about doing the deed, but as it turns out that might be an unreasonable expectation.

Apparently, back in 2006 Sarah opposed "explicit" sex education in schools, supporting an abstinence-only program. Of course every parent who has a teenager hopes their kid isn't going to have sex, but most of them will anyway. Was Sarah born yesterday? Teenagers shouldn't be taught how to have safer sex?

Well, since her own teenage daughter is admittedly now pregnant, she may see the error of her ways. But, I wonder, how has she forgotten what it's like to be a teenager? And if she let her conservative views get in the way of her reason and understanding about sex education for teenagers, what else can we expect her to forget in light of her political agenda and religious ideals?

Is Palin's daughter's pregnancy a sort of "karmic" effect of her unrealistic sex education program? If there is a God, he seems to have a sense of humor because this is quite ironic.

Palin's Energy Policy is This BIG!

Governor Palin's views about Energy should probably be under more scrutiny than her family. We're all suffering with outrageous gas prices right now with no relief in sight. What is her approach to this issue?

"I don't see national energy policy as an either/or proposition," said Gov. Palin. "Rather, we need to develop secure domestic sources of conventional energy, such as oil & natural gas, while also researching and developing alternative and renewable energy."

What does she mean? And does she mean it?

Sarah Palin was Chairman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 until January of 2004, when she resigned stating that other Republican members were unethical. Throughout her career, she has supported the development of pipelines in Alaska and has pushed to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for drilling, which is a very controversial topic.

It could be great for the Alaskan economy and our economy as a nation, but there are many who oppose it because of the harm that oil exploration could do to local wildlife; a very reasonable reservation despite how we all would like to pay less to fill up our cars. She signed the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act, allowing TransCanada to build and operate a pipeline from the North Slope, even though the previous governor had an agreement with a coalition that included BP. She also increased taxes on oil company profits.

Palin stated in January that she's using earnings from the $250 million "Renewable Energy Fund" for alternative energy projects, like wind, hydro and geothermal technology. It could be just to humor the environmentalist voters, but still a step in the right direction. I wonder what "earnings" means… the fund is sitting somewhere earning interest and whatever is gained will go into these projects? I wonder what the annual percentage yield is…

Sarah also created a group of advisors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change. So, she is mostly doing what she stated in the quote above, even if she's not passionate about alternative energy. It might not be reasonable to expect a republican to be "green", but atleast she's sort of doing what she says.

Governor Palin reportedly loves to hunt and fish, maybe that is incentive for her to keep Alaska clean.

But how valid is this argument? Don't most mothers have to work today anyway? Why is she any different from female CEOs of large corporations or the woman who manages your local supermarket?

Who is Sarah Palin?

An increasingly popular question, since she has seemed to come out of nowhere into instant spotlight very recently. Her name is sprawled across numerous news and political websites and is on the lips of nearly every reporter on television, this definitely inspires one to ask "Who is she?" but it's difficult to find balanced information.

So many people are talking about her on the internet and there seem to be 2 groups, the lovers and the haters, but not much in between. It certainly makes it difficult to be objective, but we have to be, right? We all have to decide whether she's right for the VP office and that means having the right info.

I'm personally looking for facts and investigating the rumors, so I'll be sharing what I find out as I go along. As I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican, I'll try to be as unbiased as possible.

First off, she's a woman and mother of five children. This alone is a subject of much debate. For some, it is a definite reason to vote for her, for others an equally definite reason not to. I'm of the opinion that it's not enough of a reason to come to any decision, and if you're looking for more information about her, chances are it's not quite enough for you either.

Her experience in politics and government started around 1992 when she served on the city council of Wasilla, Alaska. She was then elected mayor in 1996 and governor of Alaska in 2006. She's young, so we really can't expect her to have as much experience as more seasoned politicians, but it's still a reason for many to support or not support her.

Sarah Palin, unlike many politicians, is not a lawyer. It seems that she first majored in Business Administration in college, but eventually earned a BS in Communications/Journalism and minored in Political Science. So, we might ask ourselves, should our Vice President have a Law degree?

There are some basic facts about this mysterious woman that McCain has chosen to be his Vice President if he's elected. I'll be investigating Sarah Palin further and sharing with you everything that I find, so keep checking for future posts and let me know what you're thinking too! Feel free to point me and the readers of this blog in the direction of any information you've found.
