Basics

If you've never had kids and wonder why your mom-friends keep showing pictures of their babies to you every chance they get or why they are so overly passionated with taking baby portrait photos, the answer is simple. Baby Portrait Photography is truly a very fascinating and enjoyable leisure!

Many mothers and fathers have taken the art of baby portrait photography into their own hands. In fact, if you're a new parent, I bet you have a camera tucked in your bag all the time or making sure that you bring yourself to a professional photographer using a Photoflex First Star Studio Portrait Kit Equipment and alike. To capture the witnessed unexpected 'firsts' or simply, capturing the right moment that candidly presents itself, are sure the ultimate joys of a parent.

Baby Poses

However, there is also a challenge in taking baby photos; and that is, babies do not know how to pose. The subject is still too unaware of its surroundings or at certain ages, unpredictably active. So it would be helpful if we could be least expecting of their abilities to strike a pose. We know babies can barely hold up their heads or retain a particular position at 0-3 months that's why we would need to hold them to pose.

Experiment on how the baby could be held but make sure that the focus of the photo would be on the baby and not on anyone else. You must find a way to capture only the baby's profile while being held by another person. There are still limited positions you can capture when you are taking photos of babies between the ages of 3-6 months. The good news is that babies can now hold their heads up so it'll be much easier to get the face into profile. Costumes and props that are safe for these ages may also be used to liven up the photos.

Babies begin to sit around 6-9 months and this is when you can capture very odd poses from the babies. Since the babies start to become very active, this is the time when you need to master the shutter speed feature of your camera. And from ages 10 months onwards, some babies may be able to recognize that their photos are being taken and might even hold their poses a little longer. Candid photos may do very well during these ages.

Ten Things to Keep in Mind When Dealing With Baby Portrait Photography

1. Make sure that your camera has film all the time and that your batteries are fully charged all the time.

2. If you are using a digital camera, it is best to have batteries ready.

3. Familiarize yourself with the use of shutter speeds and camera flashes.

4. Do not be afraid to take ultra-close up photos of your babies.

5. Try shooting at distances and capturing the drama of the scene.

6. If you are going to pose your babies, hold them securely.

7. Your babies need not be dressed in costumes all the time, just make sure they are clean unless you intend to take photos of them wiping chocolates go on their faces which is very adorable too.

8. Try shooting in grayscale. Black and white photos come out very classy and elegant, so if you intend to edit and/or just frame the photos, you will never go wrong with it.

9. Remember that babies can easily get distracted, if you caught your baby doing something very nice, be quick in clicking the camera or you might miss the moment.

10. Get others involved. Have your relatives of family members make coo-coo sounds to make the baby smile or simply talk to the baby to get eye contact.

There is nothing like capturing the essence of a child in a photograph. They grow up so fast so you want to really get every precious moments on film. You will learn simpler baby portrait photography techniques as you go along, and you'll be proud each time you get a cute little smile recorded for eternity.

*** Discover The Art Of Portrait Photo Management ***

Entry made by Everything Photographic

They soon find out that it’s the wrong one for them. This can be a very expensive mistake. So the big questions are what is the right one for me and how do I know which is best for me.

One of the first things that you want to know about the camera that the salesman is trying to sell you is as follows: How long does the camera take to turn on and be ready to take the shot? In the consumer market this can range between 1 to 5 seconds most being towards the 3 seconds mark. How long does the camera take to focus on the subject ( not to take the picture)? Most cameras take between 1 to 3 seconds most at around the 1-second mark. How long does the camera take to actually take the photo after you have pushed the shutter button completely? Again, most cameras take between 1 to 3 seconds this is called shutter lag time. Now you can see to take a photo can take up to 5 seconds just to turn on and up to another 3 seconds to focus in and the up to another 3 seconds just to actually take the photo.

In a cheaper camera, but not necessarily cheaper it can be up to 9 seconds to take a photo from the camera turned off. You may say “yes, but I will leave my camera on” ok that’s fine, but you may still have a lag time of up to 3 seconds just to take a photo. Just imagine how annoying it will be now that you have purchased your new digital camera costing you around $400 - $500 to find that you just can’t catch your child blowing out the candles because your new camera at the critical time of blowing the candles out took 1 second to focus and a further 2 seconds to take the photo. What was the result? A child sitting in front of a cake with black smoldering candles.

Can you set the white balance on your camera? Just what is the white balance?

About 60% of digital cameras don’t have this adjustment, you must buy one that can be set manually, not just one that has an “auto white balance” as they are not as good as they advertise.

Does your camera have different exposure modes?

Exposure modes are simply where does the camera take a light reading? The cheaper cameras just do an all over reading which can be very limiting to say the least. A good camera will have a “spot”, “centre weighted” and “matrix” metering system, which allows you to take great photos in any light situation.

When buying a digital camera, buy it for the fact that it’s a camera not a video camera as well. One student showed up all the features her camera had and that’s why it was more expensive – the only thing that it didn’t do well was take still pictures!

You can get so much out of your new digital camera! You just have to put some time in for learning how to use it properly and how to take better pictures – remember no one will ever want to look at a poor quality photo twice!

If you want to take really great pictures that will be in your family for years put in a little effort with your new digital camera.

Related articles

Viewing Infra-Red (makezine.com)

Samsung taking all that complexity out of pointing and shooting with the 12.2 megapixel TL100 (engadget.com)

Tips & Tricks to Become a Better Photographer (articlesbase.com)

Entry made by Everything Photographic

There is always room for improvement, however. Use the following tips to help make your photos go from acceptable to great.

1. Always be aware of the background. You don’t want to find trees growing out of people’s heads or a passing vehicle to draw attention from your subject. Sometimes moving your subject just a couple steps to either side can make all the difference. A photographic background projector can help you to manage and capture these kind of photo aspects.

2. Use available light. If your digital camera has an option to turn the flash off and it’s light enough outside to read a book then use the available light and turn the flash off. In general camera flashes are too harsh for human skin and make all of us look pale. Indoors, where there isn’t enough daylight, place your subject by a window and use your fill flash feature.

3. Aim your camera slightly down at the person’s face. Also don’t shoot just face on to the person, try a little to the side, a three quarter view, so that you see more of their face. Remember camera higher looking down and a three quarter view, it will slim your subject.

4. Remember your focus. Get closer to your subject. Fill the frame with your subject and there will be no doubt as to what the picture is saying.

6. Never put your subject dead center. Put your just slightly off center; not a lot just a little. When you’re shooting groups of people, find the imaginary center line of your group and put that line just a bit off center in your view through your lens or screen.

Following these tips won’t turn you into an award-winning photographer today, but you will be on your way to better, more powerful photographs that others will comment on for years to come. All the best to you.

See also:

Ken Rockwell The Photography Expert

Canon PowerShot A590IS 8MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
Entry made by Everything Photographic

These two often confuse the average camera buyer, until you know what you’re looking at.

Optical zoom works much like the zoom lens on a 35 mm film camera. It changes the length of your camera’s lens and draws the subject closer to you. The optical zoom keeps the quality of the picture. Digital zoom works differently. It simply takes the picture and crops it then enlarges the part that is left. It causes the quality of the photo to be reduced, sometimes greatly.

What this means in terms of output is you may have a larger view of an object with the digital zoom, but chances are your image will become unfocused. Details will become lost. It is actually best to turn off the digital zoom feature of your camera if possible. This will prevent you automatically zooming in too close as the digital zoom is often an extension of the optical.

There are a couple of things you can do if you want a closer view of a subject but want the quality of your picture to still be good. Try moving in closer when you take the picture. Often only a foot or two will do the trick. If this isn’t possible, you can set your camera to take a picture at its highest file size. This will result in a photo that can be cropped to include only your desired subject, yet allow for an image that is still clear.

Digital zoom has its place. It can be used if the only destiny of your photo is the internet. Photos online can be a much lower quality in the camera and still appear acceptable when sent through e-mail or posted on a web gallery. If your goal is printing, however, seek a camera that has a greater optical zoom and turn off the digital zoom. To your camera, no; to you, however, it could mean the difference between getting the picture you want or running out of space on your memory card.

When choosing the most logical size, take into account how many pictures you usually take at a time. Your needs if you are a world traveler will be different from those of a person who only uses a camera for holiday get-togethers. You also need to decide how big the files are of the pictures you take. Smaller files such as pictures for online will take less space and enable you to fit more on a card. Larger files for printing will need more room.

If you have a 2 mega-pixel camera, 128MB is usually enough. For a 3 or 4-megapixel
camera, a 128MB or 256MB memory card is usually plenty. For a 5-megapixel camera, start with a 256MB memory card.

Here's a rough guideline of how many pictures a flash memory card can hold:

*A 128MB flash memory card can store about 21-41 large, uncompressed images or up to 100 small, compressed images. This is good enough for most photographic needs.

*A 256MB card will store about twice that, 42-82 large pictures and nearly 200 smaller ones. Important events like weddings and once in a lifetime events might warrant this size just to make sure you don’t miss that one special moment.

* A 1GB card has room for nearly 4 times as much as a 256MB card, If you are planning a long vacation with a lot of picture taking, this might be best with the capacity to hold 168-328 large images and a total of close to 800 smaller images.

Whatever you decide, remember you can always use several smaller cards and just change them when they are full. It only takes a few seconds to switch memory cards, so don’t panic if you don’t have a large memory card.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

They are: table top, ceiling mounted or wall
mounted.

Make sure that when you buy your projector that it is able
to be mounted as you want.

Table top - Does the projector match the decor? Is the
noise that the projector makes low enough? Do you think
that the projector will be suitable for the screen size?

Ceiling mount - You must first make sure the mount fits the
type of ceiling you have - vaulted or flat. Is it fairly
easy to install the cables and the power that is required?

Do you need to have a mount with a quick release? Are you
able to move the mount in various positions? Mounts will
vary in drop height from the base. This may give you some
idea as to how low from the ceiling your projector must be.

Wall mount - This can be similar to a ceiling mount or you
can have a special AV rack.

These are some things to consider when you are wall
mounting:

- Can the mount support the projector's weight?

- Is it able to be adjusted for sideways and height
movement?

- Will the mount fit in with the decor of the room?

- Will the location you have chosen for the projector
produce the desired screen size?

When building your home cinema, positioning the projector
is critical in order to you to have a wonderful experience.

You can get some really good bargains in home cinema systems, speakers and home theaters in here.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

They ensure that millions of their consumers all over the world are satisfied with their products. That is why they continue to improve and work smarter to provide people with fruitful technological advances including the manufacture of cameras.

Panasonic is not only a renowned brand name. The name stands for diversity and depth of their research capabilities, product selection, and manufacturing expertise. As consumers, it is also vital to protect such quality products. High technology products like cameras are very sensitive that is why it should always be kept safe to prolong its lifespan. How? Use an appropriate camera bag.

Camera bags are very important. It can keep your photography equipments safe wherever you go. Nevertheless, it should be of normal weight and comfortable to carry. A very simple way to find the right one is to carry your gear in a camera store and put it on your desired camera bag. Do initial testing by lifting it and carrying it as if you are photographing and traveling. Make an assessment about the fit and feel of it within your body.

But it does not end there. You also need to examine the materials used in manufacturing it. Maybe you are familiar with the bag padding technology which was first based on using cotton batting which surrounds cardboard sheets. But now it was improved using foams and new plastics to make it lighter and much better. The layers should be carefully checked whether it is waterproof, a cardboard that absorbs water, or a closed-cell long-lasting foam. The linings should never interfere with the opening and closing of the bag and it should be easily dried out when it gets wet.

If you are an adventurous photographer, then you better watch out for its construction. It should be closely and doubly stitched using durable thread, and provide reinforcement. You don't want your gear to get messed up or crushed down when your camera bag straps has been broken under a strain due to poor stitching.

The internal and external details of the camera bags must never be taken for granted. The fabric on the sides and its dividers should have the same material. It must be soft enough to protect your camera and its lenses. The bag must contain sufficient padding and sturdy dividers. The external fabric is durable and resistant, cordura or denier is more preferred, seams are also sewn throughout the way, pockets are very accessible, straps are adequately stitched, and it provides space for additional straps.

Both the interior and exterior systems of your camera bag should have maximum flexibility. The innards can be interchanged or removed to adjust onto your required needs. It should grow along with your interests as a photographer.

Zippers are easy to open and accessible. This is very important for photographers when concentrating on their camera while accessing other accessories on their bags. Clasps are made up of either metal or plastic but it should withstand heavy use.

The final decision is yours. There are numerous camera bags that will perfectly fit your Panasonic camera. The selection can be overwhelming, and like shoes, you will perhaps own several camera bags before finding what you really wanted. Make sure that you go for tested brands to avoid regrets in the end.

Entry made by Everything Photographic

However, learning how to really set yourself up for success is not always easy. Creating a feature film is about so much more than just working with yourself, you have to organize writers, your crew and even your actors to ensure that everything is pulled off well. There are several things you as the director can do to ensure that the process goes smoothly though.

First is ensuring the script is done before you start looking for actors heavily. This will allow plenty of time to ensure that the actors will be able to review a completed script. Additionally, having the script completed will mean that each character is fully developed. This information for each character can go a long way towards helping you to cast the appropriate actor for each role, rather than just trying to make someone potentially fit a role that they might work out for.

If you can help it, try to schedule auditions over several days. This will allow several opportunities for the actors in your area to make it to you, plus allow you a lot of time to review as many people as possible. If you can, recording the auditions will be very helpful later as you are trying to review the options. Making notes during each audition is also helpful. Remember, you need someone who can embody each character, rather than just speak and read words back from a page. You need someone who can actually sell the character that you are considering them for.

When you move onto working on the schedule, you really need to ensure you leave plenty of time. A lot of feature films are ruined because schedules run over, directors rush through filming, an actor gets sick and misses a day or you have to completely replace someone. These are problems that plague each feature film to some degree and need to be taken into account when creating the schedule. If you have taken these problems into account, you will not be as stressed out when they come up. Should you find that your shoot goes perfectly with no problems you can congratulate yourself, cast and crew on an incredible job done and enjoy an afternoon at the beach or throwing a party.

A final step is always ensure that you devote ample time to editing. You need to cut scenes, adjust sound, fix lighting and a plethora of other issues. Most directors find that editing the movie itself can often be a bigger task than actually filming. Ensuring you have enough time devoted to this process is essential. If possible, a minimum of a month will be good to make room for problems. If you work a job aside from creating films, you might need additional time, if filmmaking is your only job you may be able to finish in less time. More important than the time necessary is the quality of the work. Your work on the editing will ultimately determine the overall feeling of the film.

Taking the time to edit the movie properly, set up the script appropriately and find a great cast will pay off as your film comes to life. Great filmmakers are aware of possible problems and learn how to work around them. As a filmmaker if you can master these skills you will find that you are not only a popular director, but you are also able to create movies that are truly respected by your peers.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

Carpeting will also
help with the acoustics of your home cinema.

If you are working with a limited budget, think about
installing carpeting on the ceiling and the walls of your
cinema to minimize reflection.

This is just some food for thought when it comes time to
accessorize your home cinema. Go here for some more ideas.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

Here is just one of them:

Sound quality - If you are experiencing poor sound quality,
does this necessarily mean that the merchandise you bought
has a defect? No, not all of the time.

The first thing you should do is check the speakers' wiring
to make sure they are properly connected at both ends. If
that proves that nothing is wrong, then you may have a
problem with the speaker or the amplifier.

The best way to determine the problem is to hook up the
speakers to the stereo. If the sound comes out great, then
you have a problem with the amplifier. If there is very
little improvement, your problem is with the speakers.

Another reason that you may be having a sound problem is
that the system is not compatible with the television that
you have. This should have been checked out before you
bought the system, but since the problem is there, you
should have a professional take a look.

It just may be that your speakers are grounded. You cannot
miss this problem because there is a hum coming out of your
home cinema system.

There are several reasons this can happen: ground loops,
bad cables, improper grounding and faulty equipment that is
caused by an electronic motor or a dimmer.

Poor wiring or speakers, grounding or even incompatibility
are just a few of the problems you may run into which can
affect the sound of the home cinema system. The minute you
notice any problems, do not panic, but instead try to
isolate the problem.

If you need you can get deeply discounted speaker systems. An otherwise wonderful picture can be ruined by this. Technically, this is called red-eye and is caused when the pupil of your subject’s eye is wide open and the light from the camera’s flash reflects off the subjects retina. In people, the color ends up red; in pets, the color is often green.

Many photo editing programs include a red-eye correction filter, but this may not allow your photograph subject to appear “normal. These filters also do not work on the green effect produced in a pet’s eyes. Photo stores sell pens that are used to clear up red-eye, but again they are not always natural-looking and do not work on the green. The best thing is to prevent the demon-eye effect from the start.

It is rare to find a digital camera that does not come with a red-eye reduction feature. This feature can be turned off or on. It is best left on in all circumstances other than direct sunlight. The red-eye reduction feature works by flashing a short burst of light at your subject before you snap the picture. This burst of light causes the subject’s pupil to close and makes it less likely for the camera’s flash to reflect off the retina. This in turn reduces the chance of red-eye.

It also helps to direct the flash of your camera so it does not directly hit your subject’s eyes. Bouncing the flash off a nearby wall or other object will soften its effect and reduce the chances of this unwanted malady. Between bouncing the flash and using your digital camera’s red-eye reduction feature, your little angel, whether human or animal, will have eyes that don’t glow.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

What would
the advantages be of having a home cinema over going out to
the movie theater? Here are several for you to think about:

Ticket cost - The price of a movie ticket these days seem
to be like the gas prices - they are constantly going up.

A family of five is going to have to part with about $40
just to see a movie once!

Food cost - You can add a minimum of $20 for just the basic
popcorn and drink. In your own home cinema, you can have
whatever snacks and drinks you wish and not have to worry
about the inflated beverage and food surcharges.

Cleanliness - The floor at the local movie theater is
littered with popcorn kernels, sticky soda pop residue and
you may even find wads of bubblegum on the chairs and the
floor just waiting to be sat in or stepped on. Your home
cinema can be as clean as you like it.

Comfortable seating - Seating at the theater is space for
attendance and not for comfort. In the typical home cinema,
comfort is the key.

You can lean back in an overstuffed leather theater
recliner and not have to worry about rubbing elbows with
your neighbor!

No cell phones - I am sure you have been to the movies and
seen some teens chatting on their cell phones. Even though
the theater asks you to turn off all cell phones and
pagers, you can hear someones phone ring at just the
critical part of the movie. There will be none of that in
your own home cinema.

These are just some of the advantages of having your own
home cinema. Can you think of any more?
Entry made by Everything Photographic

Capturing such close-up pictures is most often done with a setting that comes as an option on many digital cameras namely the macro setting.

What the macro setting on your camera essentially does is focus on a very small area. The background often appears unfocused to further bring out your intended subject. Getting in close to capture all the detail of a small object is nearly impossible with the regular setting on a camera. Anything closer than about three feet becomes blurred. The macro setting changes the distance your camera will be able to focus and often allows you to take clear pictures from as close as two or three inches.

This camera mode allows for a lot of experimenting. Try taking a picture of a bee sitting on a flower petal or a close-up of frost on the window. You will be amazed at the details brought out. You will be able to almost feel the furriness of the bee and the ice crystals are beautiful.

If you are planning to sell at online auctions, a macro setting on your camera will help with taking better pictures and better pictures help with sales. You can take close-up photos of such objects as stamps and coins, show the engraving on an object or allow a viewer to see that a piece of jewelry is flawless.

Don’t save your photo taking for big events exclusively. Take a walk and notice the little things like the pattern on a tree trunk or an ant carrying a bread crumb twice his size. We seldom think of photography as an art form, yet it is truly one of the most versatile of all the art forms and someone with an art degree in photography has a wide avenue of career opportunities open to him or her.

A photographer can be an artist or simply someone who earns a living taking photographs of other individuals. Anyone who uses a camera to make a living can be considered a professional photographer. The paparazzi who chase around movie stars and the person who takes photographs of food for magazines are all photographers. In order to become a photographer, a person usually goes to art school to learn the fundamentals of photography.

There is a lot more to photography than simply pointing a camera and clicking. While some people truly have a natural ability to look at places and situations a certain way through a lens, others learn properties such as lighting techniques and dramatic effects by going to art school and studying the art of photography.

In addition to learning how to take a proper photograph, an art school student studying photography will learn how to develop photographs in a dark room. They will learn which types of chemicals to use and how to expose film the correct way to get the best effect.

Once a person earns an art degree in photography from an accredited school, they can pursue many different careers. If they enjoy working with people and children, they can work taking photographs of babies and children either for a professional studio or on their own. If they enjoy working with food, they can learn how to take food photographs. Food photography is an art form in itself. People who are experts in photographing food for magazines are often in demand and this career can be quite lucrative.

If you have an eye for fashion, perhaps you would enjoy being a fashion photographer. A fashion photographer normally photographs models in different clothing, being careful to show the clothing to the best advantage. A person who becomes a fashion photographer should not only have an artistic flair for photography, but an eye for fashion as well.

Want to stalk celebrities and get paid thousands of dollars from tabloids for exclusive photos? Head to Hollywood and begin taking pictures of the stars. Paparazzi make a good living, although you have to be relentless and not intimidated by body guards and irate stars who claim to dislike being photographed, although they continue to show up at places where they know photographers will be. This is a very competitive field, but can earn you quite a bit of money, particularly if you have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

If you are the artistic sort and dream of being the next Ansel Adams, you can pursue your dream of being a noted artist and selling your photographs for thousands of dollars. Photography is a true art form and many photographers are fortunate enough to be able to have their work exhibited in art galleries. The nice thing about having an art degree in photography is that you can continue to work as a paid photographer while pursuing your artistic endeavors at the same time.

If you are one of those who enjoy working with people, using a camera and taking photographs, an art degree in photography may be just what you are looking for. You can have an exciting career where being creative will take you a long way.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

As a hobby, scuba diving is very enjoyable. It is a great way to meet other people as well as take a look at one of nature's seldom seen environment.

You have to realize that the earth is covered by 70% water. The unique environments as well as the unique creatures are found underwater. This is why scuba diving is a one of a kind hobby that is very rewarding. Besides, as a scuba diver, you will have a chance to look at these unique environments and creatures that can never be found on land.

However, you know that it's not really that much fun when you go scuba diving if you can't share your experience. This is why underwater photography is very popular for both professional and recreational scuba divers. Unlike regular photography in land, underwater photography is unique. You need different equipments as well as different carrying cases in order for you to take good pictures underwater.

You have to realize the fact that when you are underwater, the color that you see isn't really the true color when you take it in land. This is because the very first color that diminishes underwater is the color red. The color is distorted and therefore, will look dull. Because of this, underwater photography has different lenses to adjust the lighting and also the color in order for you to take accurate and clear pictures of the underwater subject.

Since underwater photography requires different kinds of equipments, you will also need a different kind of camera bag in order for you to better protect these sensitive electronic devices. Underwater photography nowadays will require you to have a digital camera and a specific underwater housing for it in order for you to protect your camera from water, and underwater pressure.

The camera bags are also very different. It will usually be on a hard camera bag because underwater equipments are extra sensitive. Special underwater lenses are also available for underwater photography. These lenses will be able to give you high quality and true color underwater pictures.

You also have to realize that light diminishes when you go deeper. In this case, special flashes and lights can be installed together with your underwater camera in order to create the best quality photos possible.

When purchasing underwater equipments, you have to make sure that the underwater casing, flashes and lights, lenses, and bags are designed specifically for your digital camera. If you purchase the wrong kind of accessory for your digital camera, you won't be able to get it to work. Getting the right camera bag for your underwater camera equipment is also a must. You should look for a camera bag that has a hard case, waterproof, positively buoyant and one that can fit all of your underwater photography equipments.

A camera bag for underwater photography equipment should be waterproof because when you disassemble the equipments, the electronic circuits will still be exposed. And, it should be positively buoyant because if you accidentally drop it on the water, it will float and can be easily retrieved.

You have to realize that underwater photography can require you to invest quite a large amount of money. Obviously, you need to take care of these equipments in order for you to take quality underwater photographs and share them to your family and friends for a very long time.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

Once they get past the basic operations, they get anxious to go out and try the camera. Maybe all the new terms are confusing or there seems like too much information to digest. This is understandable, but by not reading the entire manual, you limit yourself and many cool features of your camera are never used. Hopefully you will find the following suggestions helpful in getting the most from your digital camera.

After your first overview of the features your camera possesses, decide what you would like to explore the most. Pick only one special feature. Read the instructions on what this feature can do and how to use it. Don’t worry if it isn’t completely clear, that will come in time.

Now the fun part. Take your camera and start using this special feature. Try all the different settings within this one feature. See how your pictures change. Explore what this feature does. Don’t stop until you know this feature inside and out and don’t go onto the next feature until you have fully explored this one.

When you are satisfied you know the ins and outs of one special feature, return to the owner’s manual and pick another special feature you would like to learn. Repeat the above process with this feature, only returning to the manual when you are satisfied you have mastered the new skill.

By working through the owner’s manual in this way, you will find it isn’t so overwhelming. The hands-on practice of each skill will help you learn it thoroughly. When you have covered all the cool things your camera will do, go out and enjoy them all. You will be glad you took the time to become friends with this wonderful creation.
Entry made by Everything Photographic

This is the kind of situation your digital camera’s white balance is meant to prevent.

The white balance is a sensor that analyzes the lighting conditions and colors of a scene and adjusts so the white in the picture appears white. This helps insure the other colors appear as natural as possible. This is one advantage digital photography has over tradition film. With film, you buy with a certain lighting condition in mind. If that changes, you need to either change your film or hope you can fix any errors in post-production.

Most digital cameras allow you to use either automatic white balance or choose between several preset conditions such as full sun, cloudy day and so forth. Automatic white balance will work in most conditions. There may be times, however when you want to “warm” up a picture to enhance the color, such as for portraits or sunsets. The best way to do this is set your camera’s white balance to “cloudy”. This will deepen the colors and add a glowing quality to portraits. It will take a beautiful sunset and enhance it to the point of incredible.

Practice taking the same photo with different white balance settings to get a feel for the changes each setting evokes. Keep notes until you have a good idea of what each setting does. In time, you will come to automatically sense which setting is best for your particular situation.

White balance is a small setting that can make big changes in your finished photos. The answer depends on what you plan on doing with the finished pictures.

First, you need to understand what a pixel is. In terms of digital prints, a pixel simply means a dot of color that makes up the image. A mega-pixel is equal to one million pixels. The more mega-pixels a camera has, the greater the amount of information it records.

The easiest way to decide what to look for is to know what size prints you are likely to print from your camera. A one mega-pixel camera is fine for those who don’t plan on printing photos but rather just post them on the internet. A small print, say 4 x 6, will print acceptably from this camera.

A 2 mega-pixel camera will enable you to produce good quality 5 x 7 prints and fair quality 8 x 10 prints. When you reach 4 mega-pixels you can print out excellent quality 8 x 10 prints and acceptable 11 x 17 prints and a 5 mega pixel camera will allow you to print out high quality 11 x 17 prints.

Most families find a camera in the 3.2 Mega-pixel range to be the best choice. The quality of both 5 x & and 8 X 10 prints is very good yet the files on your computer are not so large you need worry about not having enough space.

Any camera over 5 mega-pixels is unnecessary for all but professionals in photography; even then, only those who have need for poster-size prints find that many mega-pixels worth the money. Most freelance photographers find 4 or 5 mega-pixels to be sufficient for excellent-quality prints.

The choice is yours. Look to what you plan on doing with your photos and then decide. In most cases spending the money for increased optical zoom and lower mega-pixels is the best choice.
Entry made by Everything Photographic
