Eliminate Dyson Hose "Kickback" Problems

When I first started using my DC41 I thought it was fantastic vacuum until I started trying to clean the steps. I went about half way up the stairs and tried cleaning the steps when the powerful suction clamped down on the stairs and instantly shortened the hose from the suction, causing my vacuum to tip over.

I highly recommend you replace your old Dyson DC25 filters rather than trying to take the time to clean them. You can see the eye-opening video below on why this is a better option than cleaning them.

In a previous post, I outlined the filters you will need for the Dyson DC25 as I have in this post, however, some people asked WHY we are changing filters when they are "lifetime" filters according to Dyson.

As an independent vacuum store owner, and Dyson vacuum dealer, we have a very good chance to educate people on their vacuum purchase. This is especially important with Dyson vacuum cleaners because they are not always "self-explanatory" to use.

If you want to get the most out of your Dyson, keep reading, I have 5 tips for you that will help you maximize your Dyson vacuum investment.

Tip #1 Read The Manual

Tip #2 Empty Your Dust Bin In A Tall Kitchen Waste Basket

I know this sounds very specific, but believe me it will help contain the dust. With a tall kitchen waste basket, (and garbage bag) you can put the entire bin into the basket to contain the dust when you dump the bin.

I have heard many Dyson owners complain the dust goes everywhere when they dump the bin, doing this one simple tip prevents that problem.

Tip #3 Use Your Tools

One of the most overlooked things on a vacuum is the extension hose and tools. You can do so much with these tools on your Dyson, to reduce your overall house cleaning time.

The crevice tool- Great for edges, couch creases, vehicle interiors, high dusting of corners.
The dusting brush- Small flat surface cleaning, dusting and upholstery cushions, vehicle surfaces, furniture and hard to reach areas under furniture.
Mattress tool- Obviously great for mattresses and cushions, but also larger flat surfaces and floor areas.

Tip #4 Filters

I have quite a few posts on this blog about filters, let me just make sure you know that you have to keep your Dyson filters clean or bad things happen, such as the motor overheating and loss of power. It is quite easy to clean the filters, and most are washable.

Tip #5 Keep The Brush Roll Clean

Many Dyson vacuums have a clear power head, however older models do not. Either way, tip your vacuum over and check the brush roll condition. If there is a lot of hair wrapped around the brush roll, just take a scissors and cut it out. Usually, the base plates (the bottom plate that covers the brush roll housing) are easy to remove with a flat head screwdriver or a couple of tabs that allow you to remove the bottom plate.

If your bush roll gets clogged and wrapped up with hair, strings or carpet fiber, it can cause excessive friction and either destroy your brush roll and or the brush roll motor. Some simple maintenance can cure that problem.

The Dyson Muti-Floor & Animal 2 Upright Vacuum..A Look At This Model In 2019

Same Girl, Different Dress, The Dyson Ball Multi-Floor 2

Why would you want to buy this vacuum, the Dyson 2 as it is called? If you currently own a Dyson DC41, Dyson DC65, a Dyson Multi-Floor, or a Dyson UP13...simply put, you don't. You already have one. This is the same girl, different dress, and with that being said, I mean it has some pen stripes added for color and that's it!

I don't know if Dyson reads my blog or not but perhaps they do because I overwhelmingly support their decision to not mess with something that is already working. If you don't have one of the models I mentioned in the first paragraph, it is time to get the Dyson 2. It is the same framework as the prior models, and is one of the best Dyson ball models they have produced in my opinion.

If you take a look at my blog post regarding the Dyson Multi-Floor vs. The Dyson Big Ball, you will see why I am a fan of this model, its more powerful and more agile than the failed Dyson "Big Ball".

Along with the Dyson 2, we have other models that are currently being discounted heavily at various retail outlets. Those are the "Big Ball" models. I feel that the Dyson Big Ball was a mistake, it was heavy, clunky and not as powerful.

What are the differences between the Dyson 2, and prior Dyson models of similar variety?

Just one change, like I mentioned, color coordinated stripes and a colored bumper guard. The color will vary from yellow, which you see in the picture above, to purple, which designates the "Animal" model.

Of course, the Animal model is just the same as the Multi-Floor, with the exception of the turbo-brush for pet hair. At the time of this writing, the price for the Dyson Multi-Floor 2 is $383 on Amazon, or for the Dyson Animal 2, $459.

If you want to be crafty, or save money, you can get the previous model, the Dyson Multi-Floor, for about $279-$329 on Amazon as well.

Either way, feel confident you will be getting a high quality vacuum, with both power, performance and an overall sturdy vacuum cleaner.

Shark vs. Dyson... What Happens If They Break?

I guess you could say there is a vacuum cleaner "war" going on right now. You know what I mean any time you turn on late night infomercials with that guy talking about how great Shark vacuum cleaners are, compared to Dyson.

So what's the verdict? As you probably can tell from the blog title here, we are obviously partial to Dyson vacuum cleaners, but is that the end of the story? Not quite. I wanted to go into some things that they don't tell you, from the perspective of someone that sees BOTH of these vacuums in our repair shop weekly.

Biggest Flaws...Let's Start With Dyson

I'll freely admit that although James Dyson is likely a genius at the level of engineering and design, I sometimes wonder if that gets in the way of practical application and usage.

What I mean by this is Dyson vacuums have a ton of great features, but none of their vacuum models with the exception of a few older models, have anything in common. They are all unique. This means in a repair situation, you are always faced with finding unique parts for a particular model. This can be time consuming and frustrating for customer's waiting for their vacuum cleaner.

And, maybe I consider myself a decent vacuum repairman, I am by no means an electrical expert. Some Dyson models have (2) or more electrical boards that can easily make your vacuum "DEAD" quickly if they go bad.

The Good News

The good news here is Dyson provides vacuum repair technicians very good training DVD's that walk you though the repair process on all of their vacuum cleaners. Because of that there are very few problems we have not been able to fix.

Dyson vacuums have a (5) year warranty. They strongly stand behind their products, and provide warranty service through a network of dealers like our local stores. Every vacuum has a sticker to provide you with a phone number to call for warranty help. The help line phone number for Dyson is 1-844-679-1647.

Biggest Flaws... SHARK

After you buy a Shark, you are on your own. Shark does not provide much for warranty support other than a phone number at 1-800-798-7398, followed by a recommendation to pack up your bulky vacuum and send it back into the company, what a pain....

Although they claim a 5 year warranty, I believe their in-house only warranty policy simply causes frustration. By this I mean, they don't allow dealers or stores the opportunity to service their vacuums. So when something simple happens like a power cord gets cut, or a switch goes our, you are basically out of luck. You can get more information on their warranties at this Shark link.

Shark claims lower prices than Dyson, but with sparse service after the sale, your cost goes up over time simply due to the fact that you can't really get anything fixed if it breaks down, you have to buy a new machine.

I have no clue why this is the case, they work very hard to get customer's, only to turn their back on them after the sale.

How does that result in future sales? I am not sure but I do know that on some models you are going to have a big chore just trying to change the belt!!!

As a vacuum repairman, Shark offers nothing. No advice, parts, support, schematics or anything beyond what you will find in the product manual.

Further, they have designed their machines to hinder repair, with hidden screws, one piece assembly features that cannot be serviced, and low quality plastics that warp and crack easily.

We have begun to document simple repairs and are working to basically reverse engineer the Shark vacuum, with hopes of at least giving consumers an option with these vacuums.

Conclusion

Although both vacuums have good and bad points, we obviously favor Dyson in the category of service after the sale. Dyson may have some design issues, but in the end they want to make sure customers are happy and have a properly working vacuum cleaner.

Solving Brush Roll Clogs On Your Dyson DC41

Most people want hassle free vacuuming, because just about the last thing you want to do is worry about maintenance on a vacuum cleaner on top of everything else you have going on in your life, am I right?

Here are the main problems we see with the brushes on the DC41:

1. Clogged brush roll

So, that's about it. That is the biggest problem we see with this vacuum. The brush gets clogged up with hair and debris and it restricts the performance of the vacuum, either by blocking the suction or stopping the brush roll.

We are a Dyson Service Center, and work on A LOT of Dyson vacuums. Brush roll problems are the most common issue on the DC41. If you have one of these vacuums, and the brush roll stops working, smells bad or just is clogged up, we have a few simple tips for you, along with links to the exact parts you might need.

1. Clearing A Clogged Brush Roll- If your vacuum is not picking up like it used to, turn your vacuum over and look at the brush roll. If you see a lot of hair and debris wrapped around the brush, it will can restrict the vacuums ability to pick anything up. Using the directions in the picture above, remove the entire power head.

2. Getting The Stuff Out- Now the fun part begins, remove the base plate from the power head that you removed, and cut or remove any hair or debris wrapped around the brush roll. You can use a scissors or utility knife to first cut any of the debris, and follow this by pulling the debris out.

One thing to look for is to see if there is any blockage in the round hole that connects to the vacuum. With the power head off the unit at this point, it is a good time to check that area as well.

3. Re-Install The Power Head. In reverse order, put the base plate back on the power head, twist and clip the red tabs back into place, and put the power head back on the vacuum, putting the red retaining clip back on.

Note: Make sure the power head clip is on the right way, otherwise the power head might fall off. If the power head does, you know the red retaining clip is not on the right way.

Replacing A Bad DC41 Brush Roll

After cleaning the brush roll, the brushes either don't spin, or there is a loud noise, or you think there is something else going on, you may have a bad brush roll. Here is the link on Amazon to a replacement brush.

Note: The brush rolls are held in place by (4) Torx screws.

How Long Are Dyson Warranties?

New Dyson uprights and canister vacuums are (5) years from the date of purchase. New handheld vacuum cleaners are (2) years from the date of purchase. Dyson fans are (2) years from the date of purchase. If you purchase a new Dyson, make sure you keep the original receipt!

How Do I Register My Dyson Vacuum?

The easiest way is to visit the Dyson warranty registration page, which you can find at the Dyson warranty registration page. Another way to register your machine is to call Dyson customer service at 1-844-679-1647 (toll-free).

How Do I Find Out If My Dyson Vacuum Is Still Under Warranty?

Where To Find Your Serial Number

Locate your receipt of purchase, if you still have it to verify that the machine is still under warranty.

If you don't have your receipt, call Dyson customer service at: 1-844-679-1647 (toll-free). Just request someone in warranty service to assist you.

You will likely be asked the serial number for your machine while you are on the phone, which you can locate using the graphic shown above.

Once they have located your machine, they can register your machine and input your purchase date if you didn't keep your receipt.

What Is Covered Under Warranty, And What Is Not?

Please refer to your manual for complete details regarding specific language about your Dyson warranty, but here are some general guidelines:

Manufacturers Defects- COVERED

Motor Failure-(excluding water damage, commercial use or abuse) COVERED

Filters- NOT COVERED

Brush Rolls-NOT COVERED

Hoses-(ie. cracks or plastic failure from normal use) COVERED

Electrical Components- (ie switches, wiring harness etc. from normal use) COVERED

These are the most common warranty issues we see at our shop. Common sense is needed if you are submitting a warranty claim.

If you abuse your machine, suck up water, use it in a commercial setting, never clean the dust bin or filters, expect the machine to fail. But also be aware that if you bring it to a warranty center for repair, it will likely not be covered under warranty. It is very easy to tell if a machine has been properly maintained or abused.

About 10 years ago, I was introduced to Dyson vacuum cleaners. I was working at a local Sears store, as a vacuum salesperson.

Up to that point I never had any experience with Dyson, and it seemed neither did anyone else at the store since we did not have much if any training on the vacuums except from what we read on the box and the older demo model we had on the sales floor.

The good news was we had a lot of motivation to sell Dyson since we were paid on commission and Christmas was coming up in about a month.

Over the next few weeks back then, I got a real world education in Dyson vacuum cleaners. I was able to see the good and bad features of the Dyson models available at the time, and learned how to communicate the benefits of each vacuum to potential customers.

So fast forward 10 years to 2016. I enjoyed selling vacuums so much I now own (2) vacuum stores, and sell the Dyson line as our only bagless vacuum. Since the early days at Sears, I have a wealth of information I can now share with you my best selection overall, if you are looking to buy a Dyson this year as a gift.

As you know, there are probably 500 different vacuum models for sale at stores, online and just about everywhere you go.

Which Dyson vacuum is my pick for Christmas this year?

The Dyson DC65 or Simply Called The Dyson Multi-Floor

First, a bit of advice if you are buying a vacuum cleaner as a gift. Don't do it unless the person you are buying it for has expressly stated that they would like or enjoy it if you would buy them a vacuum cleaner as a Christmas gift. Failure to do so could result in you getting any of the following:

-Nasty looks
-A slap to the face
-Divorce
-Unfriending
-Possible strangulation

Of course I am joking, but in all seriousness, it really helps if you know the person you are buying the vacuum for is actually going to appreciate it, otherwise you are just wasting time.

Who This Vacuum Is For?

After 10 years of selling Dyson vacuums, I have developed some opinions and clever observations that reveal that packaging has more to do with the price than the actual features on some Dyson models.

I like the Dyson Multi-Floor as my best pick for a Christmas gift because it is the vacuum that fits the widest group of people with many specific issues.

For example, in the world of vacuums as a whole, the Dyson Multi-Floor is a good choice for:

-People with a lot of carpet
-People with a lot of tile or flooring
-People with allergies or asthma
-People with pets
-People with steps (either carpeted or flooring)

-People that cannot lift a heavy vacuum
-People that like a powerful vacuum
-People that like something easy to use
-People that want a good warranty
-People that want to use a lot of vacuum tools

Ok, so I'm going to now tell you who this vacuum is NOT for. Because the worst thing I would want you to do is go out and spend your money on a vacuum that is not a good fit for the person you are buying it for.

Please read, the Dyson Multi-Floor is NOT a good choice for:

-People that don't like bagless vacuums
-People that have severe physical problems that cannot carry 17 pounds
-People that don't like Dyson
-People that have been watching Shark infomercials and are brainwashed
-People that love their old vacuum so much that anything else is inferior
-People not willing to try something new

Now... Some Details

This Ball Is Special

Let's get right to it. What makes this my top pick? Here we go...

1. I Like This Ball Better Than Other Dyson Ball Models: The size of the actual ball for the Multi-Floor is around a foot in diameter. It moves freely and easily on carpet and floor.

The newer "Big Ball" Dyson is larger, about 2"-3" inches larger and harder to move.

2. The Price Is Right!! At around $349-$399 (before holiday specials) the Multi-Floor has the right combination of features at a price $100-$200 less than the "Big Ball" Dyson. You get the best Dyson features at the best price.

3. Convenient Features: The Multi-Floor has a 12 foot hose and a built-in wand/handle along with a dust brush and crevice tool.

For gift purposes, you could always purchase other tools depending on their situation.

Dyson has a line of many accessories including floor tools, specialty dusting brushes, pet hair tools and even a mini-blind cleaning tool.

Convenient!

For those people that have a lot of different surfaces in their home, such as carpet, bare floor etc the floating power head makes it seamless going from one surface to the other, vacuuming feels just as good on hard floor as carpet.

It is truly a Zen-like vacuuming experience, trust me, you will hear many compliments after the first vacuuming.

The carbon brush roll helps reduce static electricity, which prevents dirt from escaping. A carbon fiber brush is also handy with pets since pet hairs do not escape on hard floors with a carbon brush roll.

Compared To The Big Ball Dyson... You Decide Based On The Features

Just to quickly summarize the specifications above, and not to bore you, compared to the Big Ball Dyson you see below, the Multi-Floor is lighter, has more suction power, a longer reach and just about the same dust bin volume (how much dirt the bin can hold.) All for less money.

As you can see above, the Dyson Big Ball is a heavier vacuum, with less suction and slightly less reach. But in all fairness it is still a great vacuum, but overall, in the spirit of Christmas and this article, it is just not enough for me to recommend as a "BUY" for you.

To Sum Up...

You really can't go wrong with a Multi-Floor as a gift if you have someone on your list that would really like a vacuum cleaner. It has style, performance and features a lot of people need and want in a vacuum. The only downside it will set you back a few dollars.

But let's be honest, most of you reading this are probably buying it for yourself anyway, so go ahead and splurge!!! Merry Christmas!! I would also feel warm with holiday spirit if you purchased your vacuum gift via our low price Amazon link.

Are Dyson Cordless Handheld Vacuums Worth The Money?

If you are wondering if the latest Dyson cordless handheld vacuums are worth the money keep reading I have some things to share with you from my childhood vacuum trauma.

When I was young, I vividly remember using an upright broom vacuum to clean the kitchen and bathroom floors. It was my responsibility to do the cleaning and since we had a pet parakeet that dispersed seeds all over the kitchen it was MY chore to do the cleanup every day.

I HATED the broom vacuum because it was not only heavy, it was hard to use and sounded like a jet engine taking off. That thing roared insanely loud and as a young boy took all of my strength to push. I believe I had hearing damage before the age of 12. Plus, every time I fired that thing up, the parakeet started flapping wildly sending even more seeds onto the floor.

I rejected the idea of ever having to do that chore again once I got older.

In The Picture The Lady Is Happy, I Wasn't...

Fast forward, I am now the proud owner of both brick and mortar stores that sell vacuum cleaners, as well as online sales. Our product line includes the Dyson line of cordless handheld vacuums and broom vacuums as I call them.

I was super selective in the models for "broom" vacuums that we offered, I cringed at the thought of some brands and models since they reminded me of my early childhood experiences.

After testing these vacuums in-store, I realized the most current Dyson handheld vacuum cleaners SOLVED my main objections and problems with broom vacuums.

(2) Kinds Of Dyson Handheld Vacuums/Cordless Broom Vacuums
For The Digital Age

New And Improved!!

Dyson has introduced a line of portable, battery operated handheld vacuums and what used to be traditionally called "broom vacuums" now called cordless "portable" floor/carpet vacuums.

The first part of this post I will talk about the handheld vacuums, followed by the portable vacuums, as I illustrated in the photo above.

These vacuum models are designed to clean of both carpet and bare floors of all types. They are the V6 models and V8 models. Sporty sounding right. The look quite different than the "broom" vacuums of yesteryear.

I must admit when I first took a look at these, the design reminded me of something sleek and sporty. Almost making me WANT to have an excuse to vacuum, (almost).

Let's get to it, are these things really worth the money?

As far as the handheld Dyson vacuums go, I think the "worth it" factor really depends on your need. They have so many variations of the same thing to tailor to your home/family/lifestyle.

Starting with the Dyson V6 handhelds (all the models you see above) you are looking at $200 bucks up to around $250. The only differences are in the color and the TOOLS that go with each particular model. Other than that, everything is the same. 20 minute run time, charging station etc.

Here is my opinion: Easy and convenient to use. The trigger and gun-like design makes cleaning fun. The weight is balanced and light enough to prevent strain.

The 11 year old version of myself would have enjoyed cleaning much more! The cordless design is handy. The only issue I have is the dustbin is on the smaller side. You press the red latch (opposite of the trigger) to dump the dust.

Other Info:

Cordless- I can't tell you how many times I tripped over the cord as a child. Or the cord would not be long enough and it would pull out of the wall. These Dyson models give you the FREEDOM to vacuum wherever you want to.

Sound level- A little loud, but about 50 decibals less than the shrieking wail of the broom vacuum I operated as a child.

Battery Life- Powerful enough to clean for up to 20 minutes.

More About Options/Price

This is the purple and silver model, called the V6 Trigger, and is the lowest price, at $199, it comes with what you see above, which is the single crevice/dusting tool.

This is common for Dyson. They make different colors of the same vacuum, add a few different attachments and presto! You've got yourself a different product altogether. This is allows you to pick the handheld vacuum that best suits your specific needs.

Example above, this is actually the most expensive handheld V6 at around $249. The reason is it is to be used to vacuum mattresses, and includes a soft dusting brush and mattress cleaning attachment, along with a heavy duty HEPA filter to trap all of the mattress dirt and dust mites. Yikes.

It lists each model specific to people with pets, kids, cars, boats or just general messes.

The V6 and V8 Cordless Vacuums (Floor/Carpet Broom Vacs)

Cordless broom vacuums, as I call them, most similar to my childhood broom vac that I was tortured with. Dyson has simply used the same vacuum engine (motor) that the handheld vacuums use, and put a wand extension and motorized power head on the bottom to allow you to clean floors and carpet.

The wand on these models DOES detach, turning it into a handheld. All of them come with handheld vacuum attachments too.

As you can see in my illustration, the differences amount to the power head used, attachments (just like the handheld models) and in the case of the V8, more battery power. The V8 has up to 40 minutes of cleaning power, vs. 20 with the V6 models.

In comparing prices on these models, the V6 Cord-Free, which is the first model pictured, is at the $275 price point, with the lower end powered brush roll.

Prices go up from there, the middle models are $279 and $339, while the V8 Absolute you are going to be at $597!!! Steep increase in price, but the power difference is incredible.

Here is my opinion: A joy to use, no matter the model you select. If you have kids, pets or any combination of common messes, any of these models is a great choice.

Easy To Use- Light, maneuverable, the first choice I use before thinking about using my upright.

Flexible- Disconnect the wand and put on the attachments and you have yourself a handheld vacuum too.

Power- 20 minutes for the V6 models. If you really, really need that extra power (40 minutes of battery life) and have the budget to spare, go for the V8.

If you are going to spend the money for a handheld or one of the broom vacuums, GO FOR ONE OF THE BROOM VACUUM MODELS, you will pay a little more, but you have much more flexibility with the extension wand, which by the way, detaches, allowing you to use it as a HANDHELD as well.

Unless you just want a handheld, why limit your options?

Some Other Considerations

As I mentioned earlier, the V6 Cord-Free comes with a motorized power head, as you can see in the picture above, the difference between this power head and the other models below is the SIZE of the brush, along with more motor power, as you can see in the picture below.

The bigger, more powerful, power head is available in the other V6 and V8 Absolute. Something to consider if you are worried about picking up debris on the floor. The bigger power head allows you to clean up larger particles. For some people this is an issue, ie. Froot Loops on the floor.

The Dyson DC07 Is Still A Great Vacuum Even In 2019!

This Is The Dyson DC07
Produced Around 2001

The original Dyson vacuum, the Dyson DC 07 was first produced and sold (widely in the USA) in 2001. There were other prior models that were sold in the UK, but for the most part the vast majority of people in the USA were introduced to Dyson with the DC07.

We still see many of these vacuums come into our shop, and most owners are very reluctant to part with them. This says a lot, the owners of these vacuums like them, and want to keep them.

The good news is that for the majority of the DC07 vacuums that we see, there are few we cannot fix. And Dyson still supplies parts for these machines, so it makes it easy to get parts for repairs.

Here Are The Things I Like About The DC07:

Power- The DC07 is very powerful. The suction is good and the power is definitely transferred to
the carpet where it picks up dirt and debris very well.
Durability-No other Dyson, in my opinion, is as durable as the DC07. The plastic housing and dust bin are exceptionally strong.
Vacuum Usage- I really enjoy using the DC07, the big wheels in back make moving it easy, the push handle offers comfortable steering, and the adjustable carpet/bare floor switch knob makes it simple to move between carpet to bare floor.
Hose Length- The back of the machine has a built-in hose, and stretches to reach approximately 10-12 feet away from the machine in most cases. Since the hose is located in the bottom of the machine it does not tip over as easily as other vacuum cleaners.
Simple Filters- There are (2) filters on the DC07, which are HEPA, and washable (for several usages).
Price- This is a good and bad point feature. As of 2016, there are likely few new Dyson DC07 vacuums available, however you can still find good, used vacuums from sources like our store, or other venues such as Ebay or Amazon.

Here Are A Few Things I Don't Like About The DC07:

Weight-The vacuum is on the heavy side, at about 25 pounds. The weight is not that big of an issue, since it pushes through carpet easily. However, if you have a multi-floor home and have strength or back issues, this may not be a vacuum choice for you. You might prefer a lighter vacuum such as the Dyson Multi-Floor ball.
Brush Maintenance- If you need to change the brush, you have to know the correct steps since it is connected to a clutch system. You can see the easiest method to replace the brush roll at the video below:

My Conclusion:

If you are looking for a durable, no-frills power house you can't go wrong here. I believe this was one of the smartest designs for Dyson vacuum cleaners to date, and their longevity in the marketplace highlight this fact. However, if weight or size is a consideration, you might be better with other Dyson options.

The following are 3 quick tips to consider when you are looking to purchase a new vacuum cleaner.

These tips will make the chore of replacing your vacuum much more enjoyable since you will be able to make a better decision based on your needs.

But first...

You will see I am BIASED toward Dyson vacuums, but that is because in the world of bagless vacuums, I find Dyson to be the top of the bunch. With that being said, I do understand not everyone likes bagless vacuums, and the price for Dyson vacuums is on the higher end.

In the end it is personal preference, but the following tips will help you make that decision.

Tip #1 What Are Your Physical Abilities?

Can you handle a average sized upright, which is between 15 to 20 pounds, or do you require something lighter such as a canister vacuum or a light weight upright?

A vacuum is like any other tool, and the wrong tool will become a source of pain (literally) for you to use. Make sure your physical abilities match the vacuum cleaner you are buying.

Tip #2 What Are You Vacuuming?

Do you have a lot of carpet? Bare floor? Do you have pets? Area rugs? The answers to these questions will help you decide which vacuum is the best choice for you.

Some vacuums have the option to choose between carpet to bare floor when vacuuming. Other vacuums have a better ability to handle pet hair. Your vacuum will help you make your specific house chores easier. The wrong pick could make your chores harder.

Tip #3 What Is Your Budget?

This is where some people get caught up. You have to be honest about what you want to spend on a vacuum. You have a wide range of prices to choose from. At the very low end are $50 vacuums, often called "throw-aways", since they are cheaply made, and not usually worth fixing if they break. At the top end you have vacuums at $1000 or more. These are much higher quality and might last for years or even a lifetime.

Figure out how much you want to spend on a vacuum and match the vacuum as much as possible to your cleaning needs from the questions above. Consider a used or refurbished vacuum if you are looking for a better quality vacuum on a limited budget.

(Video Results) Dyson vs. Dyson-- Which NEW Dyson Model Is The Winner?

Dyson has introduced into its lineup recently, (within the last year) their model "Big Ball", which is essentially what it sounds like, a larger ball vacuum, it comes in the Animal (purple trim model, and silver allergy model).

We also noticed, they started selling the Dyson "Multi-Floor" model with the slightly smaller ball which is essentially the Dyson ball model DC65.

I don't want to bore you with a lot of technical details, but I just wanted to highlight a few things before you watch the video below.

NOTE: I was stunned at the results, and you can read my reasoning behind the results after the video.

Power & Performance

Why did the Dyson Multi-Floor win? In my opinion, the Dyson Multi-Floor uses the dust bin in a better way to produce more vacuum lift, as shown by the vacuum tester in the video.

In the Dyson advertising for the new Dyson "Big Ball", they discontinued the use of filters (kind of) in favor of a dust bin designed to trap more dust. They eliminated the dust bin filter, but kept the exit filter which they say does not need to be replaced. Only time will tell if that will be true or not, since exit filters can get very clogged, and cause overheating.

I believe when they did this, they created more restriction on the motor, cutting down on its power. They also added a vacuum release valve on the dust bin, which also reduces vacuum pressure at the carpet.

We favor the Dyson "Multi-Floor" for a couple of other reasons as you can see in the comparison below:

In my opinion, if you are looking for a powerful upright bagless vacuum, the Dyson Multi-Floor is a good choice for the reasons outlined above in terms of overall value.

A case can be made for the Dyson Big Ball if it had more power, but other than the exclusion of the dust bin filter, I don't see the need to purchase a heavier, less powerful vacuum for more money.

Filter Maintenance for your Dyson DC07

Update 2019: Although the Dyson DC07 has not been produced for many years, there are many of them still in use today, they are a simple, easy to use workhorse vacuum that were the first Dyson vacuums sold widely in the USA. Parts, filters and accessories are still available for purchase and the links below have been updated since this original post in 2009.

Part 1-POST-Motor Filter Maintenance For The Dyson DC07

If you have a Dyson DC07 vacuum, it is important for you to change the POST motor filter, as I describe below. Part 2 demonstrates how to change the PRE-motor filter, which is the easier of the two filters to change.

This information comes from our vacuum service experience with these vacuum cleaners. There are (2) filters that need to be changed over time.

You might have kept your washable filter clean on the side of the vacuum, which is the PRE-motor filter, but have you ever taken a look at the"Dyson POST motor filter" UNDER the dust cup base? (See picture above)

This filter under the dust bin needs to be changed, and can be changed easily. Although Dyson claims this is a washable filter, it is very hard to get completely clean and if you have pets it may cause your vacuum to smell musty after replacement. Since the development of this vacuum around 2001, there still are affordable replacement filters you can purchase.

Simply, the POST-motor filter can clog and restrict the air escaping the vacuum, reducing its power and performance. This can cause the hot motor air to build up and eventually kill the vacuum motor.

Here is what you have to do...

Step 1: Remove the dust bin from the vacuum.
Step 2: Use a flat screwdriver and gently pry the tabs of the cap covering the POST filter as directed in the picture.

Note: Be careful, the tabs on each side can crack, however, if they do crack, it does not ruin the ability to replace the cover.

Step 3: Remove the old POST filter.

Step 4: Shake out any sand or debris from the vacuum chamber of the vacuum.

Step 5: Replace the old filter with a new replacement POST filter and replace the cap.

Part 2- PRE-Motor Filter Maintenance Dyson DC07

The PRE-motor filter is much easier to change. Simply press the latch in back of the filter cover and the PRE-motor filter "POPS" out of the hatch. Simply clean, let dry and replace. Or, if the filter is excessively dirty, you can replace this filter just like the POST-motor filter.

The Truth About Buying Parts For Your Dyson Vacuum Of Any Make Or Model

If you have an older Dyson vacuum cleaner, there may be a time in its life when you have a part fail on you.

The good news if your vacuum is 5 years old or newer, is that it may be covered under warranty if it is a manufacturers defect. If not, you are stuck with the task of trying to find replacement parts for your vacuum.

This is a tricky problem since there are less and less vacuum cleaner shops operating in the country today, and less that stock parts for Dyson vacuums. This could leave you with the task of finding a used or new part online.

Finding The Right Dyson Parts For Your Vacuum Cleaner

The following are some tips to help you find the part you need.

Step #1-The most common parts that go out on a Dyson vacuum from most common to least common are as follows:

1. Bad Or Worn Brushes- Either the brush roll or motorized power heads on newer models. This results in poor cleaning, no spinning brush or both.
2. Broken Belts- Older models have belts, newer models do not. The belt may overheat, break and cause a very bad smell and sound coming from the front of the vacuum. Contact us if you are unsure.
3. Clogged or Smelly Filters- Clogged filters reduce performance and rob power. Although Dyson filters are washable, over time they will need replacement.
4. Cracked Hoses- Damaged hoses leak air and reduce vacuum suction.

Step #2- Now that you have found out your problem, you have the task of finding out where to get parts. Hands down the most cost effective supplier of parts is Amazon.com. They carry most of the most common parts required to fix your Dyson.

A Top Recommendation For A Steam Vacuum For Your Home... And Its Under $200

If you are inclined to "do-it-yourself" at home, in regard to cleaning carpet, you can get a decent steam vac for under $200. (Just be sure to read my suggested article at the end of this post please)...
P.S. I have been in the cleaning business for 15 years. Believe me, carpet cleaning is about the last thing most people want to do when they get home, so why make it harder than it has to be?
1. Stay away from cheapest models. The prices for steam vacs range from under $100 in some cases to $500 or more for top end models. Over the years in the vacuum repair business I have found the lowest end steam vacs have very weak water pumps and vacuum. It takes forever to clean an average sized room. I'd much rather spend my Saturday afternoon doing something else (anything) besides cleaning my carpets, wouldn't you?
On the high side, you have Rug Doctor or Bissell commercial steam vacs, usually just out of what most people want to spend, these models are usually at or over the $500 level.
2. You need POWER. You want something that has a good amount of suction, so the carpets don't stay wet for a week, and you want a model that has a good pump, which sprays the solution onto the carpet, a model with a weak pump will spray slowly, and take forever (as I mentioned above).
3. Water tanks. Some steam vacs have these dinky, small water tanks that hold a pint or two of water. Going back to the issue of time savings, if the water tanks are small, you are going to make a lot trips back and forth from the kitchen or bathroom dumping and filling. A waste of time.

My Pick For A Decent Priced Steam Vac

4. In the middle. Hoover Max Extract! Under $200 on Amazon.com. It covers all of the bases I mention above, the tanks are large enough to allow you the opportunity to clean quicker, and it has great power.
At under $200, you are about $50 more than the cheapest models of steam vacuums, but the extra money spent is worth it.
Read the reviews on Amazon, but also be aware that the results you get from cleaning depend on HOW you go about cleaning, which is why the link below is so important.

5 Power Tips For Your Dyson DC41 You Didn't Know... For Better Vacuum Cleaner Power, Performance & Usage

If you invested $400-$500 on a Dyson DC41, you made a very good choice.

The DC41 at the time of this writing (September 2016) is a very powerful vacuum cleaner with many uses on carpet and bare floors of all kinds.

Keep reading if you would like to know how to increase the performance of you DC41, as well as the uses for the vacuum you might not have known about.

Your Dyson might have a purple, red, blue, white or orange dust bin, they are ALL the same vacuum

#1 Let Your Vacuum BREATHE For 15% More Vacuum Suction

One thing we do to clear out any dust, obstructions or material from the motor chamber of the Dyson DC41 is to remove the side filter and turn the vacuum on. Any built up dust trapped in the ball housing can exit the vacuum, it is wise to do this OUTSIDE otherwise you will blow dust all over the house.

This will blow any dust out of the motor chamber as well, which will reduce heat buildup and possible motor failure.This will keep your vacuum working at top level. A good rule of thumb is to also clean the filters if you are doing this step.

#2 Look In The Power-Head... For This

Step #1: Remove the bottom plate and (4) phillips screws remove the (2) brush rolls, one small and one larger brush roll. Remove and clean the brush rolls.

Step #2: Remove the brush roll ends with a Torx T-10 screwdriver and clean underneath. The plastic pegs pull off after you remove the screws.

Although you probably already know you need to keep the brush roll clean and free of hair, debris, etc. The DC41 has (2) brushes powered by a small motor shaft. These shaft ends get hair and debris wrapped around it as well, and is the cause of friction and eventual motor failure.

You can take these out as you can see in the picture, and remove the hair and debris on the brush roll and shaft ends. The shaft ends also unscrew with a Torx T-10 screwdriver. You can remove the shaft ends and clean out any debris. Your brushes can then spin freely and at top speed without friction.

#3 Clean The Cyclone This Way

Step #1: Spray with disinfectant and use a soft brush and hot water preferably from a hose to clean

Step #2: Clean the inside of the cyclone with hot water and disinfectant,
be sure to rinse

Step #3: Clean the rubber seals on the bottom of the dust bin to avoid the seal hatch from sealing improperly

If you follow my techniques, you can bring your dust bin back to the condition it was like when you bought it, giving you maximum power.

The cyclone can get very clogged with fine dust, as you can see in the picture. Also, if you have pets, and pet hair, often this combination makes your dust bin smell very bad. Just vacuuming out the bin or wiping it clean is not enough.

You must clean the inside of the cyclone and the chamber going into the cone filter to keep the cyclone operating at maximum.

To do this, clean it inside and out with very hot water, a disinfectant or bathroom cleaner, and rinse, using high pressure water (like a hose nozzle or shower head sprayer).

After you get it clean, DO NOT USE IT, until it is completely dry. Use a hair dryer or compressed air to dry everything before putting the cyclone and dust bin back together.

This is technically called the mattress tool, however its use on upholstery, steps and small carpet areas makes it one of the best tools to use for quick cleaning.

You might not have heard of Zorb before, but it is a product designed to use 'encapsulation' cleaning in combination with your Dyson vacuum. You sprinkle it on the carpet, use the Zorb tool to work it into the carpet. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then vacuum as usual.

It goes into the carpet yellow, and attaches itself to dirt and soil, and vacuums up out of the carpet black, as you can see in the picture.

This is a great product almost nobody knows about or uses, but we have had great success in using it. It is a great way to maintain your carpet in between professional cleanings.

The Dyson DC41 Ball- Easy Maintenance You Can Do!

Congratulate yourself on the purchase of a vacuum that is very effective at cleaning all sorts of surfaces. This is considered a two motor vacuum, with full power going to the suction, and a separate motor that provides power to the power head.

Like any other machine, the DC41 does require maintenance and may have an issue that requires a repair.

Dyson provides a (5) year warranty on repair issues, excluding filters or mis-use. If you would like free troubleshooting advice, give us a call at 701-532-0801

At our vacuum repair center, we find the following common issues with the Dyson DC41. Most of these issues can be easily remedied, others will need advanced maintenance which you may or may not be able to complete on your own. I have included as much information here as possible for SIMPLE maintenance so anyone can complete these maintenance tasks. I may cover more difficult issues in a future post. Or give us a call if you have questions.

Please note, your DC41 may have a red, blue, purple, gold or even silver colored dust bin. Although the dust bins may have a different color, all of the parts and components on the vacuum are the SAME. So, in the pictures and examples below I have a Dyson DC41 Animal, which has a purple dust bin.

The following are common problems/remedies and maintenance information as follows:

1. Changing filters: This is the #1 problem we see with the Dyson DC41. If one are both are dirty, it restricts the performance of your vacuum.

Filter #1 Inside the cyclone: The first one is located inside the dust bin cyclone assembly on the top of the vacuum, which you can see in the picture on the right.

To check to see if the filter is clean, just lift up the tab and remove the tubular shaped filter.

If it is excessively dirty, on the outside or inside, you will want to replace it with a new one. Simply washing and replacing the old filter will give your vacuum a musty, wet smell, especially if you have pets. Filter #2 Inside the ball assembly: The second filter is inside the ball assembly. This filters the exhaust air going out of the vacuum motor into you house.

The exhaust filter is important to keep the air in your house clean by trapping any dust that escapes your vacuum dust bin. However, when the filter becomes dirty, it restricts the air going out of the vacuum motor, which creates a tremendous amount of HEAT, which is a killer to vacuum motors.

Many people ignore this filter or do not even know that they have one, or how to remove or replace it. The video below explains how (and why) you should change this filter. You can get a replacement filter that fits the DC41 at this Amazon link.

2. Brush roll/bar maintenance

The brush roll on the DC41 is a two piece design as you can see in the picture. A larger piece and smaller piece attach to the brush motor inside the powerhead. (please refer to the video above for directions on removing the powerhead from the vacuum). Often, if you collect hair, strings etc. this will wrap around the brushes and restrict the ability for your vacuum to pick up anything. It must be removed. Although in the picture it shows a person removing it by hand, it is much easier to do with a scissors.

If the brushes are excessively damaged or worn, or the ends of the brush do not move easily, you should consider replacing the brush roll altogether. You can find a replacement brush at this Amazon link.

3. Common clogs and removal

You will find all manor of clogs usually in one of three locations. Most of the time, a clogged vacuum results in very bad suction, and on the DC41 you will often get a high pitched sound coming from the motor. This means the motor is working at maximum but not getting any air flow. You should really clear clogs as quickly as possible, if you don't the vacuum will over-heat and shut off. Doing this too often could burn out your vacuum motor. You can see the pictures and notes below, showing you the best places to find clogs.

Keep in mind you may need to pull up very hard to remove the base of the hose

4. Ball shell maintenance

Often, we get DC41's in with a ball shell that fell off or the ball cracks. Sometimes this is because the plastic housing was damaged and the resulting shell fell off. Other times the ball has not been put back on properly after changing or cleaning the filter. One of the easiest things to do to maintain you ball shell is to make sure it is on tight enough, if it becomes loose or wobbles, it may strip out and damage the bearing inside the ball shell.

The ball has (2) pieces, the filter side, and the motor side. (Please refer to the video above for removing the filter side ball half). If yours is damaged, it is easy to fix, just unscrew the center, remove and replace with a new ball shell. You can find a replacement ball shell at this Amazon link.

For a number of years, I had trouble with doors. Keeping them open, leaving them open, and finding things to keep doors open.

I'm in the carpet cleaning and vacuum business. We are in and out of a variety of homes and businesses every day. The problem is many of the buildings we enter are secured buildings with one, two or even three doors in which we are bringing equipment and tools. Sometimes there are two or more of us in and out of buildings. Doors present a problem!

Sound familiar?

I started buying traditional plastic door stops to put under doors for a while, you know the traditional plastic wedge. The problem was often they were not big enough to wedge open the door, or they would be to weak to keep the door open and collapse under the weight of the door. Plus, if your hands are full, you end up having to drop everything, prop open the door, and pick it all back up. Call me lazy, but over time this is a hassle if you are doing it all day.

About a month ago I was introduced to the "Wedge-It" door stopper. Or door prop. I'm not sure of the correct term but I was a little skeptical until I tried it since all the other one's failed. You can see the result of in the video below:

I have found the easiest way to use the Wedge-It especially if you have your hands full is how I demonstrate in the video. Just open the door and hook it over the middle door hinge pin. Presto the door is open, you don't have to bend down or drop what you have in your hands to prop open the door!

So you have three options for its use, as you can see in the picture below.

(3) Options to use the Wedge-It
We use option #2 the most

The thing I like the most is doors no longer slow us down!

Option (#1)- Using the first option above the door is a good choice if you need to get the door open WIDE, as it will allow you to keep the door open at about the 90 degree angle.

Option (#2) from the picture is the choice I use the most, as I mentioned earlier. You can use it by dropping it over the hinge pin, which is easy to do, and doesn't require you to bend over, you just open the door, drop the Wedge-it over the pin and keep on going. The drawback here is sometimes the door will not be open all the way. Some doors don't have a middle hinge pin, but you can still use the option (#2) method to keep the door open, just by putting it in between the jam and the door.

Option (#3) is the traditional use of the Wedge-it, as a door stop. It allows you to keep the door open at the greatest angle, and it works on very narrow floor gaps to about 1 1/2 inch gaps under the door, beyond that you will likely need to use options #1 or #2 to keep the door open. You can also work it in reverse to keep the door shut as well, or slightly open, if you need to prevent a door from opening all of the way, due to wind, etc.

Here is a view of the Wedge-It up close. I have propped open several very heavy steel doors with only one over the middle hinge pin without any issues.

Conclusion: This one is a no-brainer. HIGHLY recommended. We carry two in our tool pouch, and two in each van. If you are in the trades, delivery or a homeowner that needs a useful door stop this one is IT.

The Dyson DC-14 Animal Vacuum Cleaner

Update 2016: Most Dyson DC-14 vacuums are now several years old. This vacuum was introduced to the USA market around 2003-04. Since then, many people have enjoyed its cleaning power and durability. If you would like to maintain your DC-14 Animal, keep reading, we have a few easy tips you can do to make sure your vacuum continues to run at top performance.

Although this article relates to the "DC-14 Animal", the maintenance tips work for any DC-14 model. The Animal model had an extra hand tool designed for pet hair pickup, otherwise the vacuum itself is identical to all other DC-14 models.

We have seen a few of these vacuums in our vacuum shop, the following tips are the common issues we have found on this model.

We have included a video later in this
post for advanced maintenance tips.

The following methods for maintaining this machine are based on the recommendations from the Dyson company along with my own tested tips for maintenance.

The picture on the right is the DC14 (Multi-Floor) however your DC14 might be purple, which is the "Animal" version, or red, white or blue. It is worth noting they all have the same parts only the colors differ.

Clear dust bin on the DC14

1. Dust Bin/Cyclone Cleaning

Clear dust bin cleaning- The number one cause of issues with this vacuum is clogs and debris in the dust bin and cyclone assembly. Some basic cleaning can prevent this issue.

Remove the clear bin from the cyclone unit. The plastic see-through cup can be removed from the cyclones by pressing the release button on the back of the entire assembly. The clear plastic bin can be cleaned in soap and water. This step alone will eliminate a lot of possible odors from your vacuum, especially from pet hair, etc. Be sure to clean the rubber seals as they can get very built-up with dust and cause the lid on the bottom of the bin to not close and seal properly.

Cyclone cleaning- The cyclone is the yellow part of the entire dust bin that sits inside the clear plastic bin that holds the dust. Take the cyclone outside or to a well ventilated area or garage, and blow the fine dust out with pressurized air, or a shop vac set on blow. You could also use a number of dry towels or terry clothes to clean up the cyclone as much as possible, however, this will be less effective. Unfortunately, this step can get very messy, so make sure you do this outside.

Although Dyson does not recommend getting the cyclone assembly "wet", I have found that the cyclones can be cleaned up by using a hose and detergent as long as you clean all of the assembly and rinse it completely.

You MUST make sure it is completely dry before assembling the cyclones and the clear bin together and put back on the machine. Failure to do this can result in moisture getting into your vacuum motor and destroying your machine.

2. Filter Cleaning and (Recommended) Replacement

Filter #1-- Remove the washable filter, which is on the top of the dust bin cyclone assembly. There is a small latch usually yellow or purple that you will press to pop up the filter cover. This is called the PRE-motor filter. In the picture below it is the yellow filter.

Pull out the filter from the plastic housing and inspect it. If it seems in good shape you can wash it and let the filter air dry before re-installing back in the vacuum.

If this filter is too dirty, or if you had pets, washing and replacing the filter may cause a very bad smell once you turn the vacuum on. In that case, we recommend you get a replacement filter. Filters used to be rather expensive for Dyson, but they have come down in price as of the writing of this post (2016). You can get the DC 14 filter you need at this Amazon link.

Filter #2--The second filter is under the dust bin and a plastic cover and needs a flat bladed screw driver to remove.

This is called the POST-motor filter which is the purple filter in the picture.

There are (2) tabs on each side that you will carefully need to pop "up" and then press the front cover tab inward to release the cover. (See picture on right)

This filter accumulates a great deal of black carbon debris from the motor.

Again, like the other filter, although Dyson claims this to be a "washable" filter, in my experience I have never seen this to be true. You can wash out the filter and let it dry, but the filter may smell bad after you put it back in the vacuum. You can get the DC 14 filter you need at this Amazon link.

3. Exterior Cleaning

Clean the plastic exterior with any type of surface cleaner, including the rubber seal next to the dirt cup. Use a bit of WD-40 to keep the wheels moving freely on the axles.

4. Brush Roll, belt and clutch Maintenance

Turn the vacuum over, or lie it down on the floor so the underside of the vacuum is visible, inspect the roller for built up hair, carpet fiber, string etc. Get a knife or sharp scissors and cut this material free from the roller brush. Also check the ends of the roller for hair build up.Excessive build-up here can cause undo stress to the motor and cause failure.

You will also want to check the nylon bristles on the roller, to make sure they are not wearing excessively. If the bristles are too short, they will not make very good contact with the carpet or floor and the performance will be reduced.

5.*Advanced Maintenance**

If you has a little more mechanical ability, you can tackle the brush roll, belt and clutch system, and replace if necessary. This is usually the case if your brush is not spinning or you hear a horrible loud sound coming from the base of the machine. This will tell you that you need to replace the belt and/or clutch. We suggest the latter if this is the case. You can get the DC 14 brush roll, belt and clutch at this Amazon link.

Essentially, on the DC14, the belt runs on a clutch (see video) that connects to the motor and runs the brush roll.

Maintaining The Dyson DC25 Ball Vacuum

Update 2019: At the time of its creation, the Dyson DC25 was the most powerful of the "ball" vacuums. It is very smooth steering, lighter weight than other uprights and flexible to use on carpet or floors.

You can tackle the basic issues with this vacuum, in fact most require no tools, just a little elbow grease and know-how. If you have other problems with your vacuum, feel free to leave a comment below or give us a call.

Below are 5 easy tips you can do to keep your DC25 running smooth for a long time.

#1 DC25 Filters NEED Maintenance

Yes, the filters are durable, and washable. But you MUST remember to wash them and if you do a lot of vacuuming, you will want to wash them more often than every six months, which is what Dyson suggests. Over time the filters degrade and often smell horrible after they get wet, due to pet hair, bacteria and dirt. Here is the link for the filter set in the video.

If your vacuum is not working properly, clogged filters are often the main issue. It will cause your vacuum to lose power and possibly overheat the motor which is bad.

Below are more maintenance tips for your DC25.

Filter A- (Inside the ball shell)

located INSIDE the ball. As you see in the photo, the blue filter is inside the ball. A small hatch opens the ball shell revealing the filter inside. A red latch pops the filter out. Very easy to replace. Although this filter is washable, it is not easy to clean, when it becomes black (on the inside) it is time to replace. You can get the filter you need at this link.

Filter B- (Located inside the dust bin)

Located INSIDE the TOP of the dust cup. A latch opens the top front of the dust bin, revealing the dust cup filter. It may look clean from the top, but if you pull it out and look at the underside, you can see the dust and dirt that clogs the filter. Again, this is a washable filter, but after a few washes, the material gets too soft and loses its ability to filter properly. Just swap out with a new filter. You can get a filter at this link.

#2 Keep The Dust Bin Clean

The main consideration is to keep hair and debris out of the small holes that line the cyclone head. You can use a putty knife to remove any hair that clogs these holes.. You can use pressurized air to clean the cyclone head of dust.

If you have some time, and the dust bin is very dirty, you can use a hose and a disinfectant detergent to clean the entire cyclone assembly. You will get a lot of what will amount to be mud running out.

Using a disinfectant cleaner is highly recommended over just a simple cleaning solution due to the dirt, bacteria, dander, hair (pet and human) as well as spores and pollen. This will help prevent the vacuum from smelling bad after you re-assemble the duct bin.

You MUST let this dry completely before using your machine or you could risk getting moisture in your vacuum motor, which will KILL it.

#3 Removing Clogs & Blockage

You will know if you have a clog or blockage when your vacuum is not picking up very good or you hear a high pitched sound coming from the vacuum motor. This means the vacuum is working very hard to move air but cannot pick anything up.

Generally, there are 2 or 3 places on the DC25 where you might encounter a clog or blockage. These are usually found in either the hoses or the power head of the vacuum.

#4 Clean The Power-head Brushroll

Keep this brush roll free of hair, string and carpet fibers

The power head (where the brushroll is located) can develop accumulated hair, strings and debris buildup over time. You can take the side brush roll holder off where the brush is located very easily, and simply pull out the brush roll out of the housing.

If the brushes are worn you can replace the brush with a replacement using the directions above.

#5- Keep The Plastic Clean

A simple wipe down with a general cleaner can do the trick. make sure to wipe the area where the dust cup sets, so dust does not accumulate in or around any contact points. This will make everything fit correctly to maintain proper suction.

#6- A Note About Your Model Color

The Dyson DC25 came in many trim color packages. Although the color of your vacuum might be different than the one pictured, all of the parts and components are the SAME. This means your Dyson DC25 "purple" Animal vacuum operates exactly the same as the yellow and orange Multi-Floor vacuum. The same can be said for the red, white and blue trimmed DC25 vacuums.
