DanceAfrica 2026 at Brooklyn Academy of Music Features Uganda's Ndere Troupe

The annual DanceAfrica performances and outdoor bazaar mark the beginning of my New York City summer. And few traditions run as deep in Brooklyn as DanceAfrica at the Brooklyn Academy of Music during Memorial Day weekend. If you've never been, it's a whole cultural and community vibe.

Whether the weather is rainy or sunny, it's a time for Brooklyn's Black community in particular to shine. For 49 years, BAM's longest-running program and the nation's largest festival of African dance and culture has transformed BAM and its surrounding streets into a gathering place for African and diasporic traditions, bringing together artists, audiences, and purveyors of African, Caribbean and African American art, fashion, food, and culture from around the world.

At the heart of DanceAfrica 2026 is the headline dance performance series held in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, running May 22–25. Under the artistic direction of Abdel R. Salaam, this year's theme is Uganda: Umoja/ Mirembe/ Obulungi (Unity/ Peace/ Beauty)!. Uganda's Ndere Troupe returns to BAM following previous visits in 2001 and 2007, joined by Asase Yaa African American Dance Theater, celebrating their 25th anniversary with a newly revamped version of The Revival: Djembe in the New Millennium (2010), The DanceAfrica Spirit Walkers, and The Billie's Youth Arts Academy Dance Ensemble (YAA). Keeping with tradition, a libation ceremony on the steps of the Peter Jay Sharp Building precedes the opening performance (Friday, May 22), honoring those who have passed on to the ancestral grounds. Each performance will include the traditional DanceAfrica greeting, welcoming ritual, the calling of the names of the Ancestors and a procession featuring the DanceAfrica Council of Elders, the DanceAfrica Candlebearers, and YAA.

Founded in 1984 by artistic director Dr. Rwangyezi Stephen, the Ndere Troupe is a celebrated Ugandan ensemble dedicated to preserving and sharing the country's rich cultural traditions. Through dance, music, and storytelling, the troupe showcases the depth and diversity of Uganda's many ethnic groups, emphasizing community, heritage, and joy. Their performances are both a cultural archive and a living expression of contemporary Ugandan identity, offering audiences an opportunity to connect with Africa's living traditions.

DanceAfrica 2026 Festival Highlights

DanceAfrica 2026 extends beyond the stage with dance classes, film screenings, visual art, and community programming presented in collaboration with the Billie Holiday Theatre at Restoration Plaza, Weeksville Heritage Center, Mark Morris Dance Center, the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA), and the African Film Festival.

The DanceAfrica Bazaar, one of Brooklyn's most beloved open-air marketplaces, returns to the streets surrounding BAM, bringing together over 150 African, Caribbean, and African American artisans, designers, chefs, and entrepreneurs celebrating Black culture through fashion, food, art, and community.

FilmAfrica, curated by the African Film Festival, returns with a selection of films from across the continent, deepening the festival's exploration of African and diasporic culture. Dance classes offer hands-on engagement with African movement traditions taught by members of Ndere Troupe, co-presented by BAM and Mark Morris Dance Center.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Comes to Brooklyn, June 5-8

Attending a performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is always a highlight of my arts and culture calendar. An engagement with this awe-inspiring and genre-bending dance company is even better when they perform close to home at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Ailey’s long-standing relationship with BAM began in 1969 when the trailblazing choreographer established The Ailey School in Brooklyn and presented his company’s first BAM performances. The company remains a vital force in New York City—and across the globe.

You can catch the company's rhythmic and riveting repertoire June 5-8 at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House (30 Lafayette Avenue). The following works will be performed:

Holy Blues (World Premiere)

From renowned choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar (formerly of Urban Bush Women and AILEY's 2025/26 Artist in Residence) in collaboration with the Company’s long-time dancers Samantha Figgins and Chalvar Monteiro, The Holy Blues  takes its title from remarks in Alvin Ailey’s journal in which he wrote, “My roots are also in the Gospel church, the Gospel churches of the south where I grew up…holy blues—paeans to joy, anthems to the human spirit.” This genre encompasses gospel music and the blues, the sacred and the secular. Both walk with us in times of trouble and strife, serving as passages to the divine. 

The Holy Blues is inspired by the ring shout and “the door of no return”, which function as both metaphors and an account of the lived experience of past generations. Dionne Brand states in her book A Map to the Door of No Return: Notes to Belonging, “This door is not mere physicality. It is a spiritual location. It is also perhaps a psychic destination. Since leaving was never voluntary, return was, and still may be, an intention, however deeply buried. There is as it says no way in; no return.”

Treading

When Elisa Monte's sculptural, mesmerizing duet was first performed at New York City Center in 1981, The New York Times declared, "Treading gives lovers of fine dancing much to marvel at." The couple in Monte's ballet come together in fluid, intricate movements that combine with Steve Reich's evocative music to create an aura of mystery and sensuality.

Grace

Ronald K. Brown’s spellbinding Grace is a fervent tour-de-force depicting individuals on a journey to the promised land. Described by The New York Times as “astounding, something to be sensed as well as seen” and "the return of a truly remarkable work," this spiritually charged work is a rapturous blend of modern dance and West African idioms. As in many of Brown’s works, the movement alternates fluidly between extremes, with eruptions of power coupled with lightness. A serene solo for an angel-like figure in white gives way to fireball intensity as 12 dancers resembling contemporary warriors execute Brown’s whirling, pounding choreography—arms and legs slicing the air and fingers pointing to the sky.

Brown’s varied music choices closely reflect the heart of the work, with the spiritual grounding of Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” the contemporary yet timeless house music vibe of Peven Everett's “Gabriel,” and the West African and African American traditions of Fela Kuti’s Afropop beats.

Revelations

Performed to negro spirituals, song-sermons, gospel songs, and holy blues, Alvin Ailey’s Revelations fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.

More than just a popular dance work, it has become a cultural treasure, beloved by generations of fans. Seeing Revelations for the first time or the hundredth can be a transcendent experience, with audiences cheering, singing along, and dancing in their seats from the opening notes of the plaintive “I Been ’Buked” to the rousing “Wade in the Water” and the triumphant finale, “Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham.”

Mr. Ailey said that one of America’s richest treasures was the African American cultural heritage—“sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful.” This enduring classic is a tribute to that tradition, born out of the choreographer’s “blood memories” of his childhood in rural Texas and the Baptist Church. Since its premiere in 1960, the ballet has been performed continuously around the globe, transcending barriers of faith and nationality, and appealing to universal emotions, making it the most widely seen modern dance work in the world.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Graces Brooklyn Academy of Music, June 4-9, 2024

I feel most alive when I am listening to music and dancing. As a spectator and fan, some of my fondest moments of watching dance performances have been witnessing the dignity and grace of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Every time I see the Ailey company, I am inspired, moved, and grounded in the beauty and complexity of the African American experience.

For me, the highlight is always "Revelations," Mr. Ailey's three-part ode to his upbringing in the Black Baptist church. The three sections -- "Pilgrim of Sorrow"; "Take Me to the Water"; and "Move, Members, Move" -- tell the story of African American faith and persistence from slavery to freedom. Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of taking an outdoor Community Workshop in downtown Brooklyn, where we learned some of the choreography for "Revelations." I beamed from ear to ear while doing the steps I've seen performed by the company numerous times and I was thrilled when a Black woman who was watching told me, "You dance so well."

DanceAfrica 2024 Returns to Brooklyn Academy of Music

The DanceAfrica Bazaar is one of my favorite annual street fairs. I love to watch folks show up and show out in their flyest Afrocentric garb and to shop for handmade beaded bracelets and earrings from the African vendors. And when I'm fortunate enough to snag a ticket as I did this year courtesy of BAM, I enjoy watching the kinetic African dancers (this time the country featured is Cameroon) during the spirited and spirit-filled DanceAfrica performance at the Howard Gilman Opera House.

The festival's anchor performance, The Origin of Communities / A Calabash of Cultures, under the artistic vision of Abdel R. Salaam, welcomes Siren: Protectors of the Rainforest known for captivating performances blending traditional African dance with contemporary flair. Led by Cameroonian-born Mafor Mambo Tse, the Brooklyn-based company complements this year's theme, expanding its exploration of Cameroonian cultural practices, and highlighting the interconnectedness of dance, music, and the ancient foundations of human culture.

They will be joined by the DanceAfrica Spirit Walkers and The Billie's Youth Arts Academy Dance Ensemble, enriched by the intricate sounds of the Women Of The Calabash. Known for their mesmerizing polyphonic sound created by playing calabashes of various sizes, they showcase the diversity and creativity of Cameroon's musical and dance traditions.

The artistic vision of the show is brought to life with lighting design by Al Crawford, music and sound design by David Margolin Lawson, costume designs by Wunmi Olaiya, and set design by Jasiri AU Kafele, creating an immersive experience that celebrates the depth of Cameroonian culture. Each year, the free outdoor DanceAfrica Bazaar serves as a gathering place for diverse crowds from all five boroughs of New York and the tri-state area, attracting an estimated 30,000 people throughout the weekend. Salifou Lindou’s “La course 2,” created for DanceAfrica 2024, explores the perceived conflict between notions of challenge and play. The mixed-media work, done in acrylic, pastel, and collage on canvas, depicts a scene of running and playing, with gestures that express intense determination. The two shapes dance across the canvas, evoking momentum and urgency, and seem to merge into one, symbolizing the unity of the individual working to surpass past efforts.

As a companion piece MoCADA Digital Presents: The Independents | Cameroon, a dynamic podcast centering the voices of political leaders and historians, along with the potent music that soundtracked Cameroon’s journey to independence.

Wendy Williams Diagnosed with Dementia and Her Lifetime Documentary Reveals Struggles with Health and Finances

Wendy Williams has always been a friend in my head, as the former talk show host was fond of saying about celebrities she liked and admired. Before her eponymous "The Wendy Williams Show" became a nationally syndicated treasure trove for all the goss, I listened to Wendy's daily chat fest on WBLS in New York City. That radio show was a source of afternoon delight while working 9 to 5, and I've been a fan of the "Queen of All Media" for a long time.

So it has been hard to watch Wendy devolve into a hot topic -- while publicly dealing with the embarrassment of infidelity in her marriage, a nasty divorce, losing her hit talk show and subsequent health and financial woes.

While she was still doing her talk show, which ran for 12 years, the gossip girl openly discussed her battles with substance abuse and her medical struggles with Graves' Disease and Lymphedema. I was even watching when Wendy fainted on live television during a 2017 Halloween episode of her talk show.

“I’m a 53-year-old, middle-aged woman going through what middle-aged women go through if you know what I mean,” she said at the time. “The costume got hot. All the sudden right before passing out, I felt like I was in the middle of a campfire.”

So how is Wendy really doing? In recent years there have been rumors that the TV personality, now 59, is dealing with dementia. And ahead of the premiere of the anticipated two-part Lifetime documentary, "Where is Wendy Williams?" (airing Feb. 24-25 and repeating March 1-2), her care team disclosed that in 2023, after undergoing a battery of medical tests, Wendy was officially diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Actor Bruce Willis was also diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia.

Aphasia, a condition affecting language and communication abilities, and frontotemporal dementia, a progressive disorder impacting behavior and cognitive functions, have already presented significant hurdles in Wendy's life.

In a press release, Wendy's care team stated, "The decision to share this news was difficult and made after careful consideration, not only to advocate for understanding and compassion for Wendy, but to raise awareness about aphasia and frontotemporal dementia and support the thousands of others facing similar circumstances. Unfortunately, many individuals diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia face stigma and misunderstanding, particularly when they begin to exhibit behavioral changes but have not yet received a diagnosis.

There is hope that with early detection and far more empathy, the stigma associated with dementia will be eliminated, and those affected will receive the understanding, support, and care they deserve and need.

Wendy is still able to do many things for herself. Most importantly she maintains her trademark sense of humor and is receiving the care she requires to make sure she is protected and that her needs are addressed. She is appreciative of the many kind thoughts and good wishes being sent her way."

From the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), here are a few communication changes people with primary progressive aphasia (PPA) may experience early in the disease:

talking or signing slower than usual;
having difficulty thinking of words, even the names of familiar objects and people;
leaving words out or mixing up the order of words in sentences;
using a different word than the one they mean (e.g., "table" instead of "chair");
having difficulty understanding what words mean;
struggling to follow a conversation; and/or
making mistakes in spelling that they wouldn't typically make.

Tony! Toni! Toné! Reunites and Does It Again With Their 'Just Me and You Tour 2023'

The first time I saw Tony! Toni! Toné! in concert, I was a sophomore at Howard University. The New Jack Swing-leaning lineup for the 1989 Homecoming concert at Cramton Auditorium also included Guy (Aaron Hall, Damian Hall and Teddy Riley).

Back then, Guy was the silk set wearing headliner and the boho cool Cali trio – brothers Raphael Saadiq (real name Charles Wiggins) and D’Wayne Wiggins and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley – were the opening act, trying their hardest to win over the East coast-heavy crowd with an energized performance punctuated by choreographed dance moves and their single at the time, “Little Walter.”

But if you ask me which group’s music catalog resonates more deeply with me now and hits the right nostalgic notes (like in that Bee Gees “How Deep is Your Love” way), without any Verzuz battle necessary the answer would clearly be Tony! Toni! Toné!.

Although they only recorded four studio albums – the aptly titled debut Who? (1988); the star-making The Revival (1990); the crown jewel Sons of Soul (1993); and the bluesy House of Music (1996), Tony! Toni! Toné!’s music has withstood the test of time. Their sound is at once a throwback nod to old-school funk, blues and R&B pioneers like Sly Stone, the Isley Brothers and Curtis Mayfield and a virtuosic predecessor to fellow R&B band Mint Condition and neo-soul crooners like Musiq Soulchild and D’Angelo (with whom Saadiq has collaborated). A best-of Hits collection was released in 1997.

Saadiq went solo after the group disbanded in 1998, and as a producer, composer and a vocalist he has a signature sound and a knack for making soul stirring music that moves us. Over the years, I’ve seen the masterful Saadiq perform solo at least twice, notably for 2002's Instant Vintage. So when I saw a social media tease that Tony! Toni! Toné! was reuniting with Saadiq in tow (D’Wayne and Timothy have toured with another singer), I eagerly awaited the tour dates. And in late September, I went on a grown and sexy date night to see the 'Raphael Saadiq Revisits Tony! Toni! Toné! Just Me and You Tour 2023' stop at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Dapperly and distinctly dressed, Saadiq, Wiggins and Riley took the stage and launched into early tracks including “If I Had No Loot," "Baby Doll,” and “Tonyies! In the Wrong Key.” And a video installation paid homage to their Oakland, California roots and celebrated other beloved Bay-area artists like Sly and the Family Stone, Sheila E. and Digital Underground.

Early in the show, however, Saadiq knew exactly what to do to get the audience on its feet and singing along. “I hate to do this to you, New York,” he said before shifting gears into one of the Tonyies!’s most memorable hits, “It Never Rains (In Southern California).” “Now it may be cold on the East coast. But on the other side of town, it never rains…”

Since the Wiggins brothers haven’t performed together in 25 years, initially they seemed a bit out of step on stage. But at one point Saadiq went over and did a little shimmy with his big brother. And once problems with his microphone were resolved, the audience exclaimed with joy as D’Wayne sang lead on the slow jams “Whatever You Want” and “Slow Wine.” He even opened a few buttons on his silver sequined shirt to let us know his mack game is still strong.

After D’Wayne’s turn in the spotlight, Saadiq returned to the stage wearing a bucket hat covering his locs, a black T-shirt, and magenta sequined joggers. He launched into the Al Green-reminiscent “Thinking of You” and the groovy “I Couldn’t Keep It to Myself,” which prompted a chorus of ladies to sing and swoon along, Showtime at the Apollo-style.

Midway through the concert, Saadiq performed several of his biggest solo hits sans Wiggins, while Riley continued on keyboards. In fine and full voice, he sang "You Should Be Here,” recorded with D’Angelo and in D's absence he mimicked his mumble soul vocals; “Ask of You” from the Higher Learning soundtrack; and Lucy Pearl’s “Dance Tonight,” where background vocalist Latoya London (an O.G. American Idol favorite) did a fine job filling in for Dawn Robison.

The latter half of the two-hour-plus show had so many highlights it’s hard to note them all. But sublime standouts were “[Lay Your Head On My] Pillow,” “Just Me and You” from the Boyz N The Hood soundtrack, and “Anniversary." For me, the show could have easily ended with "Anniversary," which they really let breathe, but of course no Tony! Toni! Toné! show would be complete without the frenetic closer, “Feels Good.”

There was an encore, but I left before the Tonyies! took their final bow and went out into the clear autumn night happily humming songs that were part of the soundtrack to my young adulthood.

Memorial Day Weekend 2023 Cultural Highlight: DanceAfrica Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Throughout Brooklyn

In her essay, "African Dance is Medicine for the Mind, Body and Spirit," dancer, teacher and choreographer Cherie Hill wrote, "The more I perform African dance, the more I discover and enjoy euphoria. When the drums are beating and the body is dancing everything fits in sync and I feel limitless and powerful."

Hill is honored with a portrait by Cecilia Lamptey-Botchway that's on display at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House during the annual DanceAfrica Festival. The festival celebrates Black joy and resilience and the regal power of African dance.

I mark my calendar each year for the DanceAfrica Bazaar, where I often run into old friends and see familiar faces. In a Brooklyn that has quickly become gentrified, I love to see us walking tall, beaming with pride and to quote Bey, "shining, shining, shining, yeah." And I delight in watching the parade of beautiful Black folks swathed in vibrant African wax prints and decked out in fly, Afrocentric street fashions. It's like a family reunion and although all are welcome, it's still for us, by us.

This year, I'm also excited to take a dance class and attend the main event dance performance. The theme is DanceAfrica 2023 Golden Ghana: Adinkra, Ananse, and Abusua (May 26-29; tickets start at $25; on sale at bam.org), and it promises to take the audience on a "choreographic and musical journey through the past and present of Ghanaian culture, connecting ancestral traditions to contemporary achievements."

The company will make its BAM debut and perform traditional Ghanaian dances and music, including the royal court dance kete and fontomfrom drumming, and collaborate with the DanceAfrica Spirit Walkers and BAM Restoration Dance Youth Ensemble on stage.

Part of the production will take the form of a lively club scene, complete with Ghanaian and Nigerian highlife performed by the 10-piece ensemble Arkestra Africa, featuring Afropop vocalist Amma Whatt, under the direction of K Osei Williams. The show will also include long held traditional programs including “Memorial Tribute to the Ancestors and Elders.”

Mary J. Blige Came to Slay on Her Good Morning Gorgeous Tour

(Tracy E. Hopkins) Mary J. Blige is a survivor. She's not gon' give up. The still reigning Queen of Hip-Hop Soul is also not gon' cry. She's been through her share of heartache, but the native New Yorker made it clear during her energetic and heartfelt performance earlier this month at Brooklyn's Barclays Center that she's in a good headspace. It appears she's finally found the real love that she's been searching for, and it's self love.

It was also abundantly clear that this Brooklyn audience had a love jones for Mary J. The hype crowd was warmed up by a hip-hop banger set by Funkmaster Flex (in feisty Flex fashion he proclaimed that he wasn't getting paid to DJ, but he was there because he loves Mary) and opening acts Queen Naija and Ella Mai (Mai, who was joined onstage briefly by Babyface, was the more engaging and tasteful pick). But once Mary hit the stage, most of what happened beforehand quickly took a backseat.

Decked out in a cropped yellow jacket and thigh high yellow Louis Vuitton boots with not much else in between, she descended from beneath the stage in a cloud of smoke. With pyrotechnic flames blazing in the background, she emerged to the anthemic song "Amazing." And she did look amazing.

"I feel good, I feel great, man, I feel amazing. Man, I feel amazing, man, I feel amazing."

From that moment and for nearly two hours, the captivated crowd sang and danced along with Mary -- our cellphones lighting up the arena -- as she made several fly wardrobe changes, twerked a little and belted standout tracks from her multiplatinum and Grammy-winning catalog. This included hits that spanned her game changing 1992 debut album, What's the 411?, to her triumphant new release, Good Morning Gorgeous.

A few of the nostalgic highlights were "You Remind Me," "Real Love," and Diddy joining his protege in her trademark two-step on the "Love No Limit" remix. Plus, heart-tugging renditions of "I'm Going Down," "Not Gon' Cry," "My Life" and "No More Drama." During the show, Mary gave a nod to jazzy soul stirrer Anita Baker as the band played the melody to "Sweet Love" and she acknowledged there would be no Blige without Baker. A new generation of R&B singers can say the same about her.

The Re-Education of NeNe Leakes: The Reality Star Talks About College Hill, What Housewives She's Still Friends With and More

(Tracy E. Hopkins) I’ve been a fan of The Real Housewives of Atlanta since the beginning. So I jumped at the chance to chat with original RHOA cast member and breakout star NeNe Leakes. It’s been a tough couple of years since NeNe parted ways with the show. In 2021 her husband Gregg lost his battle with colon cancer and earlier this year she filed a discrimination lawsuit against her former employer, Bravo. But on the brighter side, the 54-year-old is dating again and starring in the BET limited reality series, College Hill: Celebrity Edition. Along with other headline-grabbing reality TV stars including, Big Freedia, Lamar Odom, Stacey Dash and Ray J., NeNe and the members of the cast lived together and attended classes at the historically Black Texas Southern University.

We asked NeNe what it was like to go back to school, what the biggest misconception about her is, which housewives she's still friendly with, and more.

Everything She Wants: What did it feel like being back in college after all these years?

NeNe Leakes: Well, when I first got the call, it was a lot of anxiety because I wasn't sure if I wanted to go back to a school or even if I wanted to learn at all. But once I got there, it was actually a very positive experience for me. We had a lot of highs and lows in there. Obviously. I'm living in a house with other cast mates, and we are all public figures, and we're all creative in our own way. So we all bump heads a little bit creatively because we had to do projects and things like that. But the overall experience was a positive one.

ESW: Where did you originally attend school?

NeNe: I attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta University Center. Yeah, so I know the whole HBCU culture. I love it. Going out to Texas, being a part of that HBCU, it was amazing. One of the things I was most amazed by was all of the professors there were Black excellence. They were super smart. They taught so well. I don't know why I was more interested in school this time than I was when I actually went to school. That's probably maturity and all of those things. [Now] I was able to be in class and listen to everything they said and do what they asked me to do. Back then, I was like, how can I get out of here?

ESW: What do you like most about who you are now at age 54 versus age 44 or 34?

NeNe: I think the 50s are where it's at because to me, 50 is like the new 30. I've learned patience.
I’ve learned the people who really care about me the most. I really need to make them important on my list because there's so many people that I thought would be there [when Gregg passed] or would just be a supportive circle, and that's not true. Some of the people that I've known way back like in college or in high school, they've never left. They have probably been the most supportive.

ESW: What would you say is the biggest misconception about you? Like, we know NeNe from reality TV, but what do you think people don't know about you?

NeNe: I would say there are a few misconceptions about me. I think one is especially when I see fans and followers, they feel like you're supposed to be hype and like bloop! And I'm like, that's just not what I'm doing. They think that I’m laughing and having fun all day long, and there's a time and a place for all of that. [But] that's not me all the time. I've [also] heard that people think that I'm difficult in some kind of way, but honestly, I'm not. I probably am the most consistent. I always believe that your face card is very valid. So if I know this is you and this is who you are all the time, I feel like you're valid. I don't have to worry about the people that are changing on me all the time. I feel like I'm really consistent. This is just who I am, and I'm not difficult at all. And I show up. Lots of people don't show up on time.

ESW: In your circle of girlfriends, what do you value the most?

NeNe: Just friendship altogether. I love my girlfriends. Their friendship means a lot to me. I'm a girl's girl. It doesn't matter. I know girls that get in relationships and they forget about their girlfriends. I'm never that girl. I'm always making time for my girlfriends. And I feel like your girlfriends are really important. And mine are very important to me.

ESW: Do you keep in touch with any of the girls from RHOA?

NeNe: Well, I always consider people from the show work associates. When a lot of people watching us feel like, are you guys friends? It's like we work together, so it's just like working with your coworkers. I talked to current housewife Drew Sidora.We weren't on the show together, but she lives near my lounge, so she comes in quite often. Marlo is a housewife now, and we still have a relationship as well. And then there are other housewives who are not on the show, like Porsha and Phaedra. We talk. All of us still have a relationship.

ESW: You’re dating again. How does it feel to find love again at this time in your life?

NeNe: [Since] my husband being passed almost a year now, it is really great to have someone. I don't think that people really understand what the grieving process is. I know I didn't until this happened to me. I never had anyone that close to me to pass [away], and the grieving is constant. I mean, this was somebody that was in my life for 25 years, so I'm always grieving him. I have highs and lows. So it's really great just having someone to be there for you. Because a lot of times people are there when it happens, but a month in, everybody is gone. Nobody's really checking on you, and that's when you need people the most. And I'm just glad that I found someone that is a great support system for me.

ESW: What do you do for fun?

NeNe: Everything. Girl, I just had a margarita. That was fun. Hang out, shop, travel, all of that is me. I have a lounge, the Linnethia Lounge [named after me]. It's like a club and I'm [there] all the time.

Celebrate the Holiday Season with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York City

Watching the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater makes me proud to be a Black woman. This ballet company is graced by dancers of color who can tackle any technique or dance style. But whether the choreography is rooted in jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop or ballet, they do it the Ailey way, which means they move with so much culturally rooted soulfulness and swag that I find myself marveling at their languid form and fierce footwork. In my lifetime, I've seen the Ailey company perform at least a dozen times and each time I picked a performance that included Mr. Ailey's beloved "Revelations." I will never grow tired of witnessing this jubilant homage to the Black Southern Baptist church. By the end I'm always standing, singing and clapping along with the rest of the audience's Amen chorus. Yes, rock a my soul in the bosom of Abraham!

Like most theatrical events and performing arts programs, this is Ailey's comeback season after going dark in 2020 due to the pandemic. And as stunning as "Revelations" was on the recent matinee performance I attended, I was equally mesmerized by another work. "Shelter," choreographed by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar of Urban Bush Women, premiered in 1988 and was first performed by the Ailey company in 1992. The piece -- grounded in dizzying African dance movement and performed purposefully, intensely and entrancingly by six dynamic female dancers -- offers a meditation on the emotional and physical deprivation of homelessness which is still shamefully relevant today.

Updated to reflect the signs of the climate changing times with a haunting drum-driven score and urgent poetry by Hattie Gassett and Laurie Carlos, this dramatic work demystifies the trickle down theory and prophesies that the poverty of some may inevitably lead to the downfall of us all. Many of us are living paycheck to paycheck and could easily find ourselves with "good will dried up" and "at the intersection of reduced resources and reverberating rage."

If Public Enemy's woke anthem, "Fight the Power," were a theatrical work, this would be it.

Presented by BAM and Playwrights Horizons in association with The Movement Theatre Company through July 11^that BAM Fisher (321 Ashland Place, $25), I attended a performance of What to Send Up When It Goes Down and a week later I'm still reeling. The evening began with a pre-show lobby experience, an installation of photographs of men, women and children who mercilessly and senselessly lost their lives to anti-Black violence, including Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Ahmaud Arbery, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland and Freddie Gray. From the outside of the BAM building some of the portraits of Black lives lost are illuminated like saints in stained glass windows. Breonna Taylor is among the lost souls memorialized in the windows, and so are victims whose names have not been prominently hash-tagged or battle cried at protests like Tony McDade, a Black transgender man killed by police in Florida in 2020.

Billed as "a play ritual of release and healing for Black people," the art installation set the tone for the alternately solemn and jubilant two hours that followed. Before the audience was led into the auditorium, we were asked to put on a black ribbon to symbolize our collective grief and one of the members of the cast made it clear that this was a theater piece for us, by us.

“We are glad non-Black people are here. We welcome you but this piece was created and is expressed with Black folks in mind. If you are prepared to honor that through your respectful, conscientious presence, you are welcome to stay,” actor Kalyne Coleman announced before the audience entered the BAM Fisher auditorium.

Once inside, wearing masks was required for the audience and seating was socially distanced. A circle drawn in chalk marked the main stage area. What transpired was like a sorrowful, vengeance-soaked fever dream, a cathartic cleansing and a celebration of Black pain and resilience. Some Non-BIPOC attendees were visibly rattled by much of the language and subject matter. That was both intentional and necessary. As a playwright, Harris has given non-Black audience members a glimpse of what it feels like to be the marginalized minority.

During the performance, the stellar cast -- Kalyne Coleman, Alana Raquel Bowers, Rachel Christopher, Ugo Chukwu, Denise Manning, Javon Q. Minter, and Beau Thom -- step danced, sang and acted out scenarios that most Black folks have either experienced or could relate to, like shrinking or being metaphorically “eaten” a little piece at a time in order to fit in with our white colleagues and friends, being oppressed and othered at every turn, and feeling righteously outraged (there’s a play within a play where a vindictive maid conspires against her self righteous “Karen” boss). Scenes were interwoven and themes repeated like a patchwork quilt.

Singer and actor Denise Manning (see lead photo), a petite and curvy sister with long braids and powerful voice anchored the play with a call and response song. In unison we sang, “Sun come up. Shine on me. Can’t stop it. Feelin’ free. And I got that love, from below and above. From the left and right. On every side. Wanna thank you. Wanna thank you. Wanna thank you.” I carried that comforting mantra with me.

At one point, the actors asked the audience to write a love letter to Black people and to place it in bowls on the stage. And at the conclusion of the show, non-African American audience members were asked to leave so the Black attendees could fellowship together. As the non-BIPOC attendees exited, they were given a few anti-racist references and resources to ponder. One was an “Accountable Apology: A Ritual” by social worker Brianna Suslovic, which read: “What if we made apology into ritual, just as we have ritualized forgiveness? What if our apologies centered on collective healing and justice, instead of centering our guilt and shame?”

Meanwhile, inside the auditorium, as the Black folks stood in a circle, we looked each other in the eyes and followed call and response chants with affirming adjectives like “You beautiful Black people” and “You fly Black people,” followed by a boisterous, collective chant of "Yeah!”

In this moment, we celebrated and supported each other. The energy was palpable and high vibration. This ritual reinforced that we as a Black community need to lean on each other in these difficult times. No matter what slings and arrows literally come our way, we must remember that we are a proud and powerful people, and we’re stronger together. What we sent up was a tearful eulogy for our brothers and sisters who are not here. May they rest in power. What we sent up was our hope and prayers for those of us who are still here. May we transcend and keep on shining.

I'm not a wig girl. But during the pandemic, I wasn't able to get my twist extensions redone as often as I like. So I started to consider wearing a wig as a manageable protective style option and an easy way to change up my 'do and look polished during Zoom calls.

As a wig novice, however, I didn't know where to start. And the curly synthetic wig I purchased on Amazon was not entirely the natural looking vibe I was going for.

Checking the Unit: First, examine the wig to make sure that all combs and straps are in the correct place.

Prepping Your Hair: Creating the right foundation is important! Make sure that your hair is braided down, or in some form of braids or twists. This ensures that your wig will lay as flat as possible.

Applying the Wig Cap: Next, choose a wig cap that best matches the color of your scalp and skin tone. Pull it carefully over your head. This will create a smooth foundation and help protect your natural hair underneath.

Melanoma Myths: How Skin Cancer Affects African Americans

It's a myth that African Americans and other people of color can't get skin cancer. The truth is that skin cancers, including melanoma, affect Black and Hispanic people at a disproportionately deadly rate when compared to white people. So if you see something suspicious like a new, unusual growth or a change in an existing mole anywhere on your body, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or dermatologist right away.

Here are some key facts:

An average five-year melanoma survival rate is only 67 percent in Black people versus 92 percent in white people.
Late-stage melanoma diagnoses are more common in Hispanic and Black patients than in non-Hispanic white patients.
When skin cancer is found in Black and Hispanic people, they tend to be diagnosed at a later stage and, as a result, have a worse prognosis.

MedStar Health shares the following information to debunk common misconceptions around skin cancer and melanoma:

MYTH: SKIN CANCER ONLY AFFECTS FAIR SKIN

This is the most dangerous myth out there. Skin cancer affects people of all races and skin tones, so it is important for everyone to get their skin and moles checked regularly.

MYTH: KEEP AN EYE ON MOLES AND GET THEM CHECKED AT YOUR ANNUAL PHYSICAL

Melanoma can become life threatening in as little as six weeks. If left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body. Sadly, many people wait too long to receive treatment - and the outcome can be deadly.

Skin cancer can be found on the soles of the feet, the toenail and fingernail beds. As mentioned above, if left undetected these can be life threatening.

While we tend to think of approaching stress management from an emotional wellbeing and physical health standpoint, we don't often associate making dietary changes with reducing stress and anxiety.

While scheduling an appointment with your primary care doctor and seeking help from a therapist or spiritual advisor may still be necessary to help address the underlying reasons for why you're feeling stressed and the degree to which your stress affects your life, here are a few food for thought tips from Constance Brown-Riggs, MSEd, RDN, CDCES, CDN, nutrition consultant and author Diabetes Guide to Enjoying Foods of the World.

Swap your morning coffee with a cup of warm tea. “The key to tea's ability to reduce stress is centered around its amino acid content. Both green and black tea contain L-theanine an amino acid that relaxes the mind yet it doesn’t make you feel drowsy. Enjoy 1-2 cups of tea each day as a nourishing way to distress.”

Boost your morning smoothie with spinach and flax seeds. “Thanks to an abundance of magnesium, spinach helps to lower blood pressure and stress levels. Flax seeds are loaded with omega 3 fatty acids that stimulate the release of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is a natural anti-depressant that helps regulate mood.”

Load up on whole grains for lunch. “Whole grains boost serotonin levels to help reduce afternoon mood swings. Heart Health for African American Women and What to Ask Your Doctor

It's American Heart Month, sis.

Risk factors like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and physical inactivity put Black women at a higher risk for heart disease. These factors can be controlled by lifestyle and dietary changes. So it's time to literally take the necessary steps to protect your heart.

Other factors, like a family history of early heart disease can't be controlled. For women, heart disease becomes a risk factor at 55. That’s because, as the American Heart Association explains, after menopause, women are more likely to get heart disease. Partly, this is because their body no longer produces estrogen. Also, middle age is a time when women tend to develop other heart disease risk factors. That's even more incentive to take care of ourselves, physically and emotionally.

Stress can also wreak havoc on our heart health. So make self-care a priority, whatever that looks like for you. Light some candles, put on your favorite playlist and soak in Epsom salts. Taking a socially distanced nature walk. Work in your garden. Take a yoga, dance or meditation class.

Now that you've been reminded of some of the risk factors, here's a handy list of ten questions to ask your doctor during your next check up, from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI's Heart Truth for Women campaign.

1. What is my risk for heart disease?

2. What is my blood pressure? What does it mean for me, and what do I need to do about it?

3. What are my cholesterol numbers? (These include total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, a type of fat found in the blood and food.) What do they mean for me, and what do I need to do about them?

4. What are my “body mass index” (BMI) and waist measurement? Do they mean that I need to lose weight for my health?

5. What is my blood sugar level, and does it mean I’m at risk for diabetes? If so, what do I need to do about it?

6. What other screening tests for heart disease do I need?

7. What can you do to help me quit smoking?

8. How much physical activity do I need to help protect my heart?

9. What’s a heart healthy eating plan for me?

10. How can I tell if I may be having a heart attack? If I think I’m having one, what should I do?

National Plan for Vacation Day: Dreaming of a Spa Vacation at Carillon Miami Wellness Resort

National Plan for Vacation Day was earlier this week. But it's never too late to plan a vacation. Or given the current state of things, it's never too late to dream of planning a vacation.

Since we are very much still in the throes of a global pandemic, I haven't been on a flight and barely out of New York City for nearly a year. But with spring 2021 fast approaching, I've been reminiscing about the last trip I took. It was in March 2020 and after attending a film festival in Miami, I arranged a day of pampering at the fabulous Carillon Miami Wellness Resort.

The good news is that if you live in Miami or you're within driving distance (until we get this virus under control, I won't be flying the friendly skies for leisure travel), The Spa at Carillon Miami Wellness Resort is open for business.

But in compliance with CDC guidelines, the Thermal Hydrotherapy Experience and locker rooms are closed until further notice. That's a bummer since the Thermal Hydrotherapy Experience, which taps into the healing properties of water, was a highlight of my visit -- especially the tropical rain showers.

While chilling on a heated thermal lounger, I chatted with another Black woman. We expressed our growing anxiety about the coronavirus. I wondered to myself if I should be at a spa or even in Miami. But in hindsight I'm glad I was able to fit in this mini spring break escape just a week or two before the world turned upside down.

During my spa day, I was treated to a Rejuvenating Sea Wrap & Massage to detoxify and nourish my skin. As promised, I felt re-energized and refreshed. Next, a light and tasty lunch at The Strand, a bright and airy restaurant overlooking the pool. Lastly, I had a non traditional LightStim Therapy body treatment designed to wake up and regenerate cells.

Sigh.
