Firefox 3 will open mailto: links with GMail

Web-based protocol handlers is a new feature in Firefox 3.0, they allow web-base application to handle non-html protocols, like 'mailto:'. This is becoming more important as applications migrate to the web.

For example you can handle 'mailto:' links to start composing new mail with GMail. How to do this?

0) install Firefox 3 ;) (today they release RC1 version)
1) Go to gmail.com, and run this address line

javascript:navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto",
"http://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")

2) When Firefox executes this code, it should display a prompt, asking for permission to allow the web application to register as a handler for the protocol.
3) go to mailto:.. to see if it's working

1) Adblock Plus

2) IE Tab

Since Internet Explorer is still the most popular web browser, some sites (e.g. update.microsoft.com) doesn’t open in FF. IE Tab embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Firefox. So if you want to see how specific site render under IE just right click on link and open it in new IE Tab.

3) Firebug

4) BugMeNot Firefox extension

BugMeNot is a data base of logins and passwords for popular services (mostly free). So if you just want to access specific site without registering, why don’t you check if there is an ‘open’ account? (most popular accounts : nytimes.com, nypost.com, imdb.com)

BugMeNot Firefox extension allows you to bypass compulsory web registration via the right-click context menu in login textbox.

5) Delicious Bookmarks

6) Google Browser Sync (the last but not least)
