Yesterday saw a good turn out for Dan’s Stableford. The players were dealt some extreme conditions as a torrential downpour in the early afternoon turned in to a beautifully sunny evening.

As often happens, the last group in provided us with the winner. Captain Colin Cleary played a solid round of golf marred only by a blob on the 3rd when he played a wrong ball (Due to a little too much wine at the very successful Valentine Dinner the night before, he said). His total of 39pts edged Mike Callaghan in to second spot (not for the first time) with 38pts. Trophy Attwood is showing some return to form as he also scored 38pts, losing out to Mike on the back 3 holes. Clinching 4th place was Dan Richings by virtue of a superb back 9 of 21pts leaving 5th place Gavin Griffiths gutted.

Colin was also the winner of 17 balls in the two’s sweep as he was the only one to score a 2, this time on the 6th hole. (Did hear there was another 2 but he forget to enter the 2s sweepstake and does not want to be mentioned, so if you see Stu Ridley don’t mention it!)

Couple of important changes to the rules have been made recently, from my experience last week not everyone is aware of the changes!!

Could be worth reading.

Rule 18-2b. Ball Moving After Address

A new Exception is added that exonerates the player from penalty if his ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.

Rule 13-4. Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions

Exception 2 to Rule 13-4 is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 is not breached.

As Evesham’s green were well and truly frozen, we had to surrender home advantage to Fulford Heath in the first round as they always keep their greens open (perhaps that’s why they are so bad in March/April). Despite the forecast our brave and (fool)hardy team battled valiantly against the strong team from Fulford Heath and the course whose surface was perhaps even harder than Tesco’ s car park. Tony Smith led the team out with an easy win in match one, Barrie Saggers narrowly lost in match 2, Captain Colin Cleary battled for a half in the third match with Paul Callaghan winning comfortably in match 4. With the match poised at 2 and a half to one and half it was with bated breath that both teams awaited the result of the last match featuring anchor man Stu Ridley. Unfortunately, Stu could’nt quite pull it off despite recovering from 4 down to lose 2&1, so with the match tied it was up to the last pairing to go back out for a sudden death finish. The rest of the team gave Stu a rousing send off on the 1st tee and then provided moral support from the bar. Halving the first extra hole, the match went to the 20th where the green now had a good 2 inches of snow on it and the delicate putting touch of the Riddler was too sensitive for the harsh conditions and Fulford claimed their place in the next round. It was a case of if only… as the Captain was 1 up on the 18th, but then lost his ball in the snow, and only halved the match - a reminder to always pack a coloured ball!
