George Carlin: My Favorite Laped Catholic Atheist Maven of Logic

I grew up watching tons of standup comedy with my family as a kid. My parents were smart enough to understand that hearing someone say the words fuck and shit weren't going to really do much harm against my upbringing, so really, I watched everything that they would watch. I was able to many of these shows "live" as they aired on HBO and Showtime, including Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, and of course, George Carlin.

Out of all of them, Carlin was the one I resonated with best. Even when I was 6 years old I loved corny, silly, and puny jokes that revolved around wordplay. There was no one better than George Carlin for that. I often found it stupid that people would get so upset over words that were just made up by humans, and that we had set rules for the right and wrong way to use them when they were just made up anyhow. I understand the need for rules, but making fun of it all was just that much better, and free speech is something we all fucking need.

Raised Catholic I found a lot of what he said about "God" and religion interesting, because even early on I started to realize that those ideas and beliefs were not my own. Laughing about it helped me realize how silly I really found all of it and as a teenager I could have no better influence or teacher on the subject than that same guy that made me laugh my ass off as a little kid.

As an adult I've become a bitter bastard of an atheist, however, with a very optimistic yet realistic eye for the future. I have major plans and goals that I want and need to accomplish and I will be starting my own family as of Oct. 25th, 2008. (That means I'm getting married, that doesn't mean that Rosa is pregnant.... yet!) Watching his last comedy special he talked a lot about things that I care about and am looking toward and it seems like every phase I enter in my life I can look back to some George Carlin comedy special that I saw right around that time. Too bad I won't be able to say that about the future.

As hilarious as I found George Carlin to be, I thought his best accomplishment was getting people to think, even just a little bit. People don't seen to do that enough or as often as they should, so even if watching one standup comedy hour made people laugh while stimulating some brain activity, he did more for it in one hour than most could do in their whole life.

With that being said, I'm not going to say "Hope you're out there somewhere watching blah blah bullshit" because Carlin and I both don't believe there is anywhere to go for that crap.

Instead, I'll just end it with my favorite George Carlin bit.

New Job at my Job?

So i might be getting a new position at my job... which would kick so much ass. I need to have benefits and all that good stuff so it would be a welcome step up.

Beyond that, it would put me in a more creative place, which is excellent as it works towards my goals of world domination.

Fuck you for not being there for me when I needed you most, which hasn't even happend yet, but I already know you're not working now so I know you WON'T be working next year when I get back down to the dirty business of music. Fuck you for having all the Cousin music on you, possibly making 2 musical projects suffer. Fuck you for not being a person, because at least if you were a person I would just not talk to you anymore or beat the living shit out of you.

Some Numbers to Scare the Shit Out of You With...

First of all, look at this chart:

Ok, now that you've seen it, really read and pay attention to the information it presents. How fucking terrifying is that? Ok, now let me fess up with you... it isn't ALL that horrible.... right?

Yeah, actually that is REPORTED natural disasters, as in some things just fell through the cracks... probably of the Earth, as it was breaking up during an earthquake. Anyhow, now there are more and more ways to record, report, and inform, so that number is only to be bigger and bigger as media and multimedia capabilities strengthen and reporting agencies pop up into existence. Beyond that, really, yes, natural disasters to seem to be growing in occurance.

Why? Who the fuck knows. Do we know that natural disasters weren't this frequent millions of years ago? We don't really have any conclusive evidence that proves or disproves it, and besides, no one was alive yet. Can't rightly ask a fucking t-rex what happened, so there we go. I will say that in HUMAN records and memory, though calamities of greater magnitude have happened I don't think the frequency of such has ever been as high as it has in the last few decades, and this decade has definitely been pretty crazy.

Now, I would also like to see natural and man-made disasters on a chart like this, basically measuring the loss of human life thanks to natural means and man-made death fests such as wars, terrorist attacks, murders, traffic accidents, and such.

Could be an interesting set of numbers, eh?

Anyhow, where am I going with all of this? You'll see soon enough. One of my damn theories, which I was turning into a book, is slowly looking more and more like reality. I'll explain more at a later date. Until then you can read the full report that I pulled this graph out of right here.

What Would Evil Adam Do?

I miss making music. Really, I do. I don't mean just recording and writing alone, I mean the full band dynamic. I miss singing. I miss performing. I miss those 3am diner runs after a show to eat breakfast food for dinner. It was fun to play bass and guitar and even drum in some of the other bands I've been a part of, but nothing was as fun as singing in Evil Adam.

I've recorded material with other people for other projects, written with other people as a band for some defunct stuff, and went absolutely apeshit with my cousin Joe in our project Cousin, but nothing has really taken me to the hilt with live performances like Evil Adam did and I'm starting to feel like nothing ever will again. I'm tempted to just try to find my way into a band that is already formed, only filling the lead singer spot, but at the same time I really would just like to have Evil Adam kicking ass like we were back in 2000. We were playing regularly, had a decent sized fan base and even had some industry contacts, even if they turned out to lead nowhere. The creative juices were in constant flow, live shows were fun, interesting, and gratifying, and I just felt like I was able to showcase my creative muscle in a way that didn't make me feel like I was being underused or ignored.

I have a lot of plans for Evil Adam next year, and really, this year is too crazy for me to even try to put much effort, money, and time into getting a live act for Evil Adam back into the grind, but I'm wondering if it really is the best thing for me. Should I just be part of something else, start something new, keep Evil Adam a recording only thing, or what? I know no matter what I do I must be part of something performance oriented. I have lots of interests, goals, and wants but how many of them are really all that attainable? At what point am I just spreading myself too thin or getting my creative hopes up? It sucks to have so many questions for myself and really no answers. I feel like I know exactly what I want to do but I won't let myself do it by wanting to do to many things or things that are just too big for me to handle. Let's take a look, shall we?

1) Evil Adam
a] Recording: write and record BRAND NEW music, finish "The Root of All Evil" and market/sell it, get press for it, whore it on the internet
b] Videos: Get music videos done for "The Root of All Evil" and have contests for fan made stuff
c] Licensing: Get Evil Adam music in films, video games, etc.
d] Website: Get a new Evil Adam site going. I have a new blog and message board, thankfully, but the rest needs to be updated.
e] Merch: T-Shirts from a non-shitty non-expensive company are a must. Anything else is icing on the evil cake.

2) Cousin
a] Recording: Write and record BRAND NEW music with Joe, finish "The Optimus Primo LP" and re-master the tracks that were on "The Bootydust EP" for it.
b] Videos: Same as Evil Adam
c] Licensing: Same as Evil Adam
d] Website: Now that http://www.bootydust.com/ is live I need to expand it, flesh it out, get Joe to post to it more, and all around grow everything around it.
e] Merch: Same as Evil Adam and then some. I think Cousin has the capability of being way more popular than Evil Adam for multiple reasons.

3] Other Music Projects
a] I've already agreed to writing a bunch of new music with John D. and Jay Curcio for an indie wrestling company but we need a place to do it and equipment to record it to. Otherwise we can't fucking start this goddamn project soon enough!
b] I want to make custom music for movies and video games that also fall outside of Evil Adam and Cousin. Any takers?

4) Movies/Video
a] I want to get some movie scripts done, finalized, and filmed. I have so many ideas, I just have to get them done!
b] I want to direct. I've watched enough shit to have a decent eye for visual media in motion, I just need the time and capability of such.
c] I know I can edit video, I've done it before. Do I really want to do all of this for my own stuff though?
d] I would love to help create and direct music videos for the bands that I also am friends with. That is a lot of you guys out there!
e] I want to act again. I was pretty good at it and it was a lot of fun.

5) Books/Stories
a] I started writing a novel years ago, and the idea grew out of control and too big for me to finish. I need to reign it in and finish it.
b] I eventually want to make a collection of short stories, prose, lyrics, poetry, and other random shit I have written over the years and just get it published. I don't care if anyone buys it as long as I can own a copy that is binded, has a real fucking book cover, and exists.
c] I have about 20 short stories that aren't short enough and thus aren't finished. They might develop into bigger stories/books but I just don't have the drive in me to get them done yet. What will it take?
d] My brain never stops coming up with ideas for things and really my first thought is that I need to become a comic book writer. 4 color art is probably the best format to take my long-winded, episodic, narrative style to, however I don't know anyone that would draw them for me. I can't draw. I want to write comics. Help, please?

6) Video Games
a] This is probably the most difficult thing to get done but I would love to design video games, but only in the realm of game play mechanics and story. I can't program and I can't draw. Yeah, sucks to be me, eh?

So there you have it. What am I to do? Anyone out there have any ideas or avenues for me to get some of this done? Anyone want to team up on some of these or know someone who can help?

Aye, either way, my brain is never idle but my hands always seem to be. I'm in a great relationship that will be 100% official in October and I feel like I have nothing to offer my future wife except love. Sure, that is the most important thing but I wish I could make her proud as well, and hell, I'd love to be proud of myself.

Sean Bell Verdict and Bad Ad Timing

I went to CNN.com to check out the news on the trial and lo and behold I witness quite possibly the worst advertising timing I have ever seen. Look to the right of the article at the ad that was displayed when I went there. I had to laugh my ass off but still it's just wrong! It wouldn't have been as bad if the kid in the picture was white and had his mouth closed.

Growing Pains was an ok 80s show, but then Kirk Cameron had to loose his nut and went Crazy Christian on the world. At one point he had a website, which is still up but has been changed, that pretty much did nothing but tell you that you are GOING TO HELL! I saw the site, laughed my ass off, sent it around to folks who also thought it was funny, including many who were Christian themselves, and then came across this awesome clip a few years later.

Nope, didn't do it this year... or for a few years actually, at least not that I remember.

So, for you folks who are reading this now, all 4 of you, I thank you for that, at the very least. I did however do an April Fools joke for work, so if you want to see that one you can check it out right here. Sure, it's not as cool now that you know it is a prank, but still I think I did an ok job of it... right?

Anyhow, I was super busy doing QA on a new section of my job's website so I had to prepare the gag the day before and set it to post the next day. I didn't have time to do something for www.eviladam.com but hopefully I get to the next few years.

The Last Session...

Tonight is the last session for recording at SAE with Zack and Lucain and I hope it goes a lot smoother than last.

Apparently Evil Adam is really a digital age only "band" and anything that is magnetic hates having me around. An 8 hour session was really difficult to get through on Saturday and we got way less than we hoped to done, so hopefully tonight goes a lot less... fucky.

Anyhow, there is so much work to be done to finish this CD and unfortunately too much of it is going to be done outside of the confines of SAE and the sound rooms that they provide. What does that mean? Neighbors of different places will be pissed off a few times in the next year or so.

Oh well!
