Leanne created a clean 2-column WordPress theme in shades of blue and implemented a horizontal tabbed menu, high-tech gradients and widget ready sidebar options of both wide and narrow for him to choose from.

Aviv came to E.Webscapes armed with specific ideas for the functionality and design of his Mac news site, MacBlogz. MacBlogz provides the latest news in the Mac world, and in order to provide specific news to their targeted readership, their primary goal was to display the top news from the Mac Community neatly organized on the main page.

Dino pulled together that news in a tidy grid format using RSS Feeds from the hottest Mac news sources, keeping the MacBlogz updates separate on their own blog – all with one installation of WordPress!
Aviv provided the PSD for us to slice, dice, and turn into a fully functional WordPress design, maximizing the use of this great content management system implementing threaded comments, avatars, and even a separate custom category template for The Rumor Mill.

At E.Webscapes, client satisfaction is definitely our goal —

Everything looks amazing ! We are done in my opinion !

It was more than pleasurable working with you and your responsiveness and wonderful work ethics have proven greatly successful with our projects.

… Aviv’s reaction to the finished project is definitely a day maker for us! Thanks, Aviv!

Beth wanted a look that was fresh and fun, and she didn’t want it to look too stereotypical “country” – no cowboy boots or denim! Of particular note for Beth was the look of her header design. Beth was very particular about the look she wanted to achieve, and Dino was able to find that look for her! He was also able to answer a lot of questions that Beth had regarding using WordPress.

Dino was also able to achieve a lot of great functionality for Beth through the use of WordPress plugins, including some great Search Engine Optimization, the NextGen Photo Gallery, integration of social media such as MySpace and Twitter, and way to sell some fun merchandise as well! He even through in a WordPress upgrade for her at the end of the project!

Beth’s website sure turned out fun and trendy! We look forward to all the fun “country music scene” gossip that she digs up for us!

Chris needed us to code his Photoshop PSD file for WordPress, and he also wanted us to make recommendations for plugins and his layout structure. One of the big pieces of Chris’s website was the set up and configuration of user reviews for the website, and Dino was up for the challenge.

Chris was quite excited to learn that Dino would be working on his project, commenting that “I love your clean, stylized graphics design style (your blog is awesome). If you have any design recommendations I am all ears.”

Dino was able to slice up Chris’s design and create a beautifully functioning WordPress theme from the PSD. Once Chris saw his design in a functioning format, he had several minor design changes that Dino was able to make for him (including more emphasis on his links and some styling for his ad/event flyers). At the last minute, Chris also decided to use the services E. Webscapes offers to set up WordPress on his domain and get his theme running for him! Best of luck Chris!

Mary came to E. Webscapes looking to create a fun website, Ohm Sweet Ohm, to advertise short term and vacation rentals to potential tenants who visit Asheville, NC from out of town.

Not only did Mary want the look of the website to be cute and whimsical, but she also wanted to emphasize the history of the cabins. Though renovated, the cabins are vintage, and one of Mary’s top priorities was a way to document this in an effective manner, especially since this factor is what makes these log cabins unique. Specifically, the challenge as our client saw things was “to make the site have a vintage flair but still be clean, professional, and give people the feeling that they’ll be in a well-equipped and renovated cabin.”

We were able to capture this look through the use of natural colors, a fun stitched pattern for accents, a cute header graphic, and the beautiful photos that Mary provided from the gorgeous mountains in Asheville.

We incorporated the WordPress LighBox plugin into the pages that show detailed photographs about each of the cabins, allowing for users to really get a good look at what these cabins are like. Lisa also used posts so that Mary can update the “Asheville Happenings” section of the website and fully utilize the SEO-friendly structure inherent to WordPress.

Just looking at these pictures is making me want to take a nice little vacation myself! Mary, thanks for coming to E. Webscapes and giving us the chance to work with such beautiful photographs!

Leah, the Executive Director from Midwest Democracy Network, approached us with some ideas she had for redoing their website with a new design, powered by Expression Engine. Their old site platform was powered by Drupal and they were looking for a change in platform that had more flexibility and was easier for them to use. Leah brought her design ideas, plan and site architecture specifications to me for implementation. .

The graphic design for Midwest Democracy Network is a clean, minimalistic design with subtle shades of red, white and blue – allowing their content and images to be the main focal point of the website.

Using Expression Engine for this site allowed us to create several different sections (weblogs) in order for them to be able to categorize and cross-post their content into different areas specified by different reform issues in Midwestern States. Each state page also pulls in RSS feed content related to poltical issues in that particular state.

The folks at Midwest Democracy Network are able to easily add images and thumbnails to each of their articles through the use of custom fields and custom implementation of the Tiny MCE WYSIWYG editor, MCImageManager and MCFileManager extensions for Expression Engine.

Through the use of different weblog set ups within their Expression Engine platform, we were able to spotlight several topics of interests for the issues, state reform and special projects that Midwest Democracy Network is currently working on.

Back in 2008, I worked with Grant Friedman from Colorburned to implement his design ideas into a custom theme for his Movable Type powered site. Recently, Grant approached me again with his desire to convert his MT blog over to WordPress – including a brand new theme design with several innovative features, to boot! He brought his design ideas and specifications and I was up for the challenge…

There were several challenges to this project that needed to be attacked, meticulously, one-by-one. The first was his import from the Movable Type platform into WordPress. WordPress has a built-in importer for Movable Type, which works beautifully. However, Grant has been blogging on Movable Type for a year and has a decent page rank for his domain. The last thing we wanted to do was lose his permalink strucutre, so I needed to make sure that all of his permalinks remain the same. Some differences between his Movable Type permalinks and the ones, intially, built by WordPress?

His current Movable Type permalinks end in .html

WordPress permalinks don’t end in .html

His current Movable Type system uses the page title for the permalink slug, but cuts it off at 26 characters

WordPress uses the full page title for the permalink slug, regardless of its length

His current Movable Type permalinks have underscores between the words: eg: follow_me_on_twitter

WordPress, by default, places dashes between the words in the permalink slug: eg: follow-me-on-twitter

These challenges weren’t impossible to overcome, just made things a little more interesting to get through. A few tweaks in the WordPress permalink strucutre, .htaccess and some mySQL database manipulation and we were golden. This article in the WordPress Codex helped guide me through: Importing from Movable Type to WordPress. With his permalink structure fixed up to match his previously existing (Movable Type) permalinks, Grant won’t lose any inbound link love from Google, other sites and other search engines, social network sites, etc. This is vital in any platform conversion.

Featured Posts

The front page of Grant’s site shows off some featured posts in a unique way. Using the Glider.js script combined with Darren Hoyt’s TimThumb script for the auto-creation and auto-sizing of images/thumbnails – I created a dynamic featured content area that ’slides’ through is most recent posts on his site and represents them, visually, using a large featured image followed by 5 smaller thumbnails that allows you to easily navigate through those featured posts with ease:

More on the Thumbnails

Using the TimThumb script mentioned above, I created several areas where the images from Grant’s post will, dynamically, appear throughout the site. Not only in the Featured Content area on the home page – - but smaller thumbnails in the archives, related posts and blog posts. To do this, I combined the TimThumb script with custom post fields which allows Grant to insert only one image URL – and the script does the rest of the work, itself – by automatically resizing the images for the various areas of his site where it utilizes specific dimensions of that one image. The resizing quality is 100%, with no image quality loss.

To implement it in the related posts listings on his site, I had to combine the TimThumb script with the Yet Another Related Post plugin written by Michael Yoshitaka Erlewine. There is a plugin I thought about using called Related Posts with Thumbs – however; I wanted the images to be consistent and make sure the image displayed is the exact image that Grant specified in the custom post field, as well as having full control over the dimensions and quality of image resizing – so I re-programmed the Yet Another Related Post plugin, combined it with the TimThumb script and provided a solution for Grant’s Related Posts listings:

Social Networking

Grant is a big fan of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, etc. He wanted to make sure this passion of his was well represented throughout his entire site. So much so that he had Ryan Putnam from VecTips create a custom TweetThis icon for his site. If you check out the bottom of Grant’s posts, you’ll see the cute little Tweet icon Ryan created – along with other social networking icons to allow Grant’s readers easy access to share his content on some of the most popular social communities out there:

In addition, I integrated Twitter into Grant’s comments, which allows his commenters to add their Twitter link to their comments; when they do – their Twitter link appears directly beneath their user avatar to allow other readers to discover them on Twitter:

Here you can see the “Twitter ID” field inserted into Grant’s comment form:

User Link Page and Feed

Grant saw a User Link Feed implementation done on another site – specifically at NetTuts – and he wanted that functionality on their site. I checked out the tutorial that NetTuts published on how they accomplished the User Link Feeds, intending on replicating it on Grant’s site. However, after reading through the tutorial, I found that the method they implemented required some alteration of some WordPress core files. I’m almost always against the alteration of core files and try to avoid it, if at all possible, because it makes upgrading the WordPress software files more challenging than it needs to be in the future. Upgrades will break the alterations made – requiring the alterations to be re-done on the new platform, assuming, of course, that the alterations are still compatible with the latest upgrade. I would much rather implement custom features with a plugin, or theme functions.

All was not lost, however, I easily implemented Grants User Link Page using a plugin called TDO Mini Forms – which allowed me to configure a form on his site that allows his visitors to submit links with a short 200 char. description to his site. Once submitted, Grant gets an email altering him on the submission – he can then go in an approve the link submission. All link submissions get placed in the “Link Feed” category on his blog – which allowed me to configure a feed for that page. So now, he has a fully functional User Links page with associated User Link Feed – all without having to alter any of the core WordPress files. In his sidebar, you can see the links and description submitted by his visitors are displayed – along with buttons that allow you to submit a link, view the User links page and subscribe to the User Link Feed via RSS:

Overall, Colorburned’s site redesign was challenging, but fun to do at the same time. I launched Grant’s new design on the WordPress platform this week and he’s gotten rave reviews so far – and is pretty happy, himself. He’s finding that he is appreciating the WordPress platform, over Movable Type, mostly because it saves time in his, already busy, blogging schedule. Thanks for returning to E.Webscapes for your new project, Grant – it was a pleasure!

If you’re located in the New Jersey area, you may already be familiar with a pet store called Jake’s Dog House, who supplies pet toys and unique, specialty items for your pet in their stores. You can also purchase these items from their existing E-Commerce store, online, at Jake’s Dog House. Jon Stein, the owner of Jake’s Dog House, decided he wanted a blog to compliment their existing online identity – I had great fun designing and setting up their new WordPress powered blog at Jake’s Dog Blog...

Within the Jake’s Dog House corporate offices, I started from square one with a great deal of personality to begin with. “Jake” is their mascot, and you can see him throughout the blog design at the top of the blog, directing your search, in the comments and in the footer of the site.

This design was a custom designed WordPress theme deployment with a few added touches to give them the functionality they wanted with the blog. They have several authors who will be writing on the site, so I created a small author profile at the bottom of each post that includes an icon/image of the author and a small bio about the author, so their readers are oriented about who wrote the post.

The folks at Jake’s Dog Blog also required a WordPress hosting solution, which we were able to provide for them through our services at Blogs About Hosting – - as a result of being one of our hosting clients, they recieved a 10% discount on our design services. Bonus!

The team at Jake’s Dog Blog were just estatic with how the project turned out. They have a fully functional WordPress blog that sports a design in keeping with their creative branding, already in place. If you’ve ever been to a Jake’s Dog House establishment, you’ll recognize the dog house roof from the blog – - it’s almost the same as the one you walk through to get to the checkout counter! I’m really happy to have had the opportunity to help them further their online identity through the creation of a custom blog for them.

Lisa (who chose to utilize the great 10% discount we offer for using Blogs-About for her hosting needs) needed not only a website for promotional purposes, but also a place for professionals, clients, and others to be able to sign up for their mailing lists for professional trainings and client seminars.

They wanted a design that would reflect the calming effects of therapy rather than trying to tie in the various different interests and tastes of each therapist, and came to a lovely green color with an artsy tree image. Lisa had the reaction every designer hopes for when she first saw the design:

I LOVE IT!!!!!!

LOVE IT. Its perfect. I love the tree and the colors!!!!

     Thank you!!!!

We were also able to create some great business cards for Lisa and her husband, who also works for the organization. Their business card designs were comlimentary to their websites (Lisa incorporated the tree and greens into her card while her husband used the Celtic knot image from her website, Lisa Riggs, with the reds from the organization website), which allows each of them to have some individual expression!
