Decription: Custodian/Janitor

Custodian/Janitor Training Purpose: Performs and oversees a variety of custodial/janitorial and/or security tasks to maintain clean and safe buildings and grounds. The employee performs a full range of custodial/janitorial assignments using limited judgment. Actions are normally determined by specific instructions from the supervisor or by following well-defined procedures, methods, and practices.

Custodian/Janitor Training Duties:

NOTE: The Training duties listed are typical examples of the work performed by positions in this Training classification. Not all duties are included, nor is it expected that all listed duties will be assigned.
• Cleans and services restrooms.
• Sweeps, vacuums, and mops floors and stairways.
• Gathers and disposes of rubbish and waste materials by hand.
• Makes rounds of buildings and grounds at regular intervals;
• inspects doors, windows, and locks to see that they are properly and securely fastened.
• Observes appearances and conditions of premises and equipment; reports needed repairs, safety hazards, or conditions requiring outside vendor services.
• Dusts such items as blinds, furniture, file cabinets, and windowsills using treated dust mittens, cloths, or hand-cleaning items.
• Polishes furniture, metal work, and chrome using appropriate cleaning and polishing compounds.
• Maintains an inventory of cleaning and toiletry supplies.
• Cleans grounds and parking lots of litter, glass, or other debris.
• May perform ground maintenance including removal of snow from sidewalks, salting walkways.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Skills/Qualifications: Must be 55 years of age or older; Unemployed and looking for work; Low Income . Knowledge and/or ability to learn of: standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the janitorial service, of potential occupational hazards and safety rules and of the proper use of cleaning supplies; Ability to follow instructions; Ability and/or learn to operate and use janitorial tools, equipment, and supplies such as vacuum cleaners, cleaning compounds and solutions, mop & bucket, et cetera.
