Leaked Shots of Windows Phone 7-Running Samsung GT-i8700

2010-09-09T21:25:00.000-07:00

A tipster sends these photos of the WP7-running Samsung GT-i8700. There's not a whole lot to glean besides the fact that it has 8GB of storage and looks like something I want to play with right now. Here's the back:

A camera with an LED flash, too! You might also notice that the i8700 drops the chrome trim our Samsung developer unit was sporting when we gave WP7 a spin in July. Much sleeker, this one is—hopefully we'll be seeing more of it soon. [Samsung]

How to Stop svchost.exe High CPU Usage

2010-09-07T23:14:00.000-07:00

Svchost.exe is known to cause high CPU usage problems. I’m sure you’ve been in a situation like this: you’re working on your computer and enjoying yourself when all of a sudden it becomes agonizingly slow and even starts freezing up. You press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open the Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and see that there are several instances of svchost.exe running and one of them is using up 90% - 100% of CPU! Some people will think: “OMG! My computer’s got a virus!!!”. Well, that might be true, because some malware masks itself as svchost, but most likely it’s just Windows being Windows.

So, what does svchost.exe do and why is it there in the first place? Svchost is there to host services and run DLLs. You might have noticed that most programs have their own .exe files and can run on their own. DLLs are different - they can’t launch themselves. Svchost.exe launches them and runs them. You can check out the FileInspect Process Library to find out more about the svchost.exe process.

Now the question is how to stop svchost.exe from stealing CPU usage. First of all, you’ll need to find out which of the svchost.exe instances is the culprit and is causing your computer to slow down. Also you need to identify the actual application running it.

Luckily, it’s easy. There is a very useful free Microsoft (originally Sysinternals) tool called Process Explorer, that gives you detailed information for each running process. All you need to do is download it and click the .exe file - no installation is required.

Once you’ve got it running, hover the mouse point over each svchost.exe process and a tooltip windows with all the information needed will appear.

How to Fix It?

First of all, if the process that is eating up CPU is not a Windows process, kill it and uninstall the program that runs it. Also scan your computer for viruses and other malware.
However, most likely it will be a Windows process, such as Task Scheduler, firewall, or Windows Update. Sometimes simply restarting your computer gets rid of the problem. If not, try downloading the most recent Windows Updates. If for some reason you can’t, go to the Control Panel - Administrative Tools - double-click the Services shortcut (or click Start - Run - type in services.msc - hit Enter), find the required service, right-click on it, go to Properties and select Disabled from the Startup type box. You can always re-enable it later, so don’t worry. Reboot your computer and then go to the Microsoft website and download updates. Install them, re-enable the service that you have stopped, and restart again. Hopefully everything will be working now.

Another way to get rid of svchost.exe high CPU usage problem is to open the Task ManagerCTRL+ALT+DEL), find the process that is causing the problem, right-click on it, go to Set Priority and set it to Below Normal (or Idle if Below Normal doesn’t help). Keep in mind that setting it to Idle might interfere with your networking services, especially if you’re at work and part of a large network. (

Clean the Registry

Also if you’re repeatedly getting svchost.exe errors, cleaning the Registry might help. If svchost was malware that you removed some time ago, and you are still getting the errors, there might be some bits of malware left in the Registry. You can download a good free Registry cleaner from Auslogics website.

WeTab tablet running with MeeGo at IFA

2010-09-07T07:51:00.001-07:00

WeTab

WeTab (or WePad) has turned up at IFA, and with something of a surprise no less -- it's running a customized version of MeeGo. Those customizations look to keep things mostly in line with the interface we saw during the device's WePad days, but it does seem to be a bit more responsive, and is seemingly in a nearly final state. Of course, it's not quite final enough to avoid another delay -- it's now apparently set to roll out in "late September." Head on past the break to check it out in action.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Listed for $1,030 on German Amazon

2010-09-07T07:51:00.000-07:00

A Samsung product exec told the WSJ that the Galaxy Tab would retail for between $200 - $300 in the US, but over on Amazon Germany, a 799 Euro price-tag has been affixed to the tablet.

That's a hefty figure, I'm sure you'll agree, but I'm sure one popular method of purchasing the Galaxy Tab would be via carrier subsidizing—though do you really need another monthly contract in your lives? [Amazon via OLED.at]

ApriPoco Controls Your Home with Voice Commands, IR

2010-09-06T05:04:00.000-07:00

All the adorable ApriPoco robot needs to control your home are a series of verbal commands and a little IR connectivity. Utter robot home domination—it's a feature, not a bug.

And ApriPoco does it all with a diminutive 8.4-inch tall frame! The robot uprising has never been so cute.

Truth be told, however, this domineering hunk of autonomous plastic and parts is meant to help people who can't help themselves around the house. ApriPoco can even "learn" once it's deployed to the field. ApriPoco joins a host of assistance robots currently being tested in Japan, all of which are demonstrated in this incredibly disarming news feature (moving furniture at 1:40!):

When one juxtaposes ApriPoco against the large aging Japanese population, the motives become slightly less sinister. Slightly. [Technabob]

Viewsonic details dual-boot Android, Windows-based tablet

2010-09-05T06:21:00.000-07:00

ViewSonic at IFA today filled in many of the details surrounding its dual-booting ViewPad tablet. Now dubbed the ViewPad 100, the 10-inch slate runs on a 1.66GHz Atom and uses either Windows 7 or the now old Android 1.6; either side appears to use a reference design but supports multi-touch. It uses just a 16GB solid-state drive, but an SDHC card slot provides most of the bulk storage.

Many of the other details are similar to those of a current netbook. The ViewPad outputs at a native 1024x600 display and holds 1GB of DDR3 memory. On top of Android-friendly features like Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi, it has more traditional netbook expansion that brings two USB ports, a 1.3-megapixel webcam and a VGA video output.

The ViewPad comes to the UK for £549 ($848) and will ship there as well as Europe in October. A US launch wasn't detailed, although most ViewSonic devices make their way to North America.

MyPhone for Windows Phone 7 on Windows Live Phone service

2010-09-05T02:04:00.000-07:00

WMPoweruser.com has just posted a new image of the Windows Live Phone service that will be a companion, cloud service for Windows Phone 7 when the devices are released. The image shows a few of the functions that will be available on the service; this followers a blurred image we had seen of this service via Long Zheng.

In the above image the options are all for the “Find My Phone” functionality of the service. Users will be able to see approximately where their phone is on a map which suggests a real-time fix rather than using the phone's last GPS "check-in" location. Users will also be able to ring their phone even if it’s on silent and lock their device and provide a message for someone else to read on the lock screen. Or, if things get drastic, users will be able to erase their phone. However with so much of a user's data on the phone also being stored in the cloud, erasing shouldn’t be as terminal as suggested but is probably not recommended.

When launched, the service will be accessed through Windows Live Devices which will also be used to manage computing devices a user owns. These devices will then be kept in sync and share program settings through Windows Live Mesh. Very little has been announced by Microsoft as to what Windows Live Phone will offer in terms of functionality but it is hoped that it will be possible for much of the data on Windows Phone 7 devices to be stored on Windows Live SkyDrive. In fact from the picture taken by Long Zheng it would appear that at least photos are stored on Windows Live using the Windows Live Phone service.

Earlier this week Microsoft announced that Windows Phone 7 had been “released to manufacturing”, meaning that the code is now complete for Windows Phone 7 version 1.0. The company has yet to announce when devices will be available.

Model the world with Google SketchUp 8

2010-09-02T07:40:00.000-07:00

It’s been 10 years (long time ago :P) since the first version of Google SketchUp was released, and there are more people modeling in SketchUp now that we ever could have imagined over a million of you a week, in fact. That’s a pretty humbling number of 3D model makers.

People around the world are modeling everything from a new design for their kitchen to entire cities in Google Earth. For their small part in this global phenomenon, they announce that SketchUp 8, the next major version of their 3D modeling tool, is available for download today. They have added significant new geo-modeling capabilities that leverage Google’s vast collection of geo-spatial data to make it quicker, easier and more fun than ever to build models of the world.

The reasons why jQuery is so Popular library

2010-09-01T06:58:00.000-07:00

I believe you have some experienced that jQuery is a fast and concise JavaScript Library that simplifies HTML document traversing, event handling, animating, and Ajax interactions for rapid web development.

jQuery makes it easy to play with the DOM, add effects, and execute AJAX requests, but what makes it better than writing your own library, or using one of the other (also excellent) JavaScript libraries out there? Here are the most reasons that I think make jQuery is the most successful JavaScript Library

Cross-browser Compatibility One of the biggest challenges in Ajax/JavaScript programming is cross-browser inconsistencies – it will drive you mad. For example, a design that renders perfectly in Internet Explorer 8 but may not run that well in Mozilla Firefox, or an interface component you’ve spent days handcrafting works beautifully in all major browsers except Opera on Linux. The jQuery team is aware of the cross-browser issues, and more importantly they understand why these issues occur. They have written this knowledge into the library—so jQuery works around the caveats for you. Most of the code you write will run exactly the same on all the major browsers.
Fast & Small The jQuery core library is only about 24KB in size (Minified and Gzipped) so it is very easily to include in your application and very fast as well.
Short Learning curve & Good Documentation jQuery is very well documented. You can find all the jQuery documentation at http://docs.jquery.com/
A lot of Plugins By including only a core set of features while providing a framework for extending the library, jQuery team made it easy to create plugins that you can reuse in all your jQuery projects, as well as share with other developers. A lot of people have taken advantage of jQuery’s extensibility, so there are already hundreds of excellent, downloadable plugins available from the jQuery plugin repository, with new ones added all the time.
jQuery UI jQuery User Interface (jQuery UI ) separates out higher-level constructs and is packaged into a neat library that sits on top of jQuery. Accordions, sliders, dialog boxes, date pickers, and more—all ready to be used right now! You could spend a bunch of time creating them yourself in jQuery but the jQuery UI controls are configurable and sophisticated enough that your time would be better spent elsewhere.
