8 practical learning tips for birding by impression (jizz)

Some practical keys of the book "Learning how to identify birds by impression".

1. The active participation of the observer is required: The observer must be involved. The observer must learn to operate variables and stages, to write evaluative sentences, to practice the field and cabinet exercises and to acquire basic information. 4. Age and skill level ID of the observer to learn to ID methodically by jizz: Age is not important to learn to identify by jizz. It matters more the level of expertise already acquired via plumage. It seems that people who have acquired the level of expert identifier via plumage, as simultaneously and unconsciously have been acquiring the iD by jizz, conclude that this technique is not valid for them since they have already acquired it. But this is not entirely true. There are expert observers via plumage who declare that after learning to methodically identify jizz, their efficiency and reliability have multiplied. On the other hand, they reveal that the holistic point of view makes them have a better understanding of the bird integrated into their environment. Finally, understanding how the process of acquisition of impressions works helps them to understand the whole process of identification and thus transmit it better to others.

The people who have not acquired an ID skill level via plumage, are the ones that are better able to understand and acquire the ID by jizz. Within this immense group there are several subgroups. The first group would include children and adolescents. These can start with a simplified version of the method, preferably with a field teacher and other young people of their age with whom to exchange experiences. The second group, would be composed of all those students and postgraduates as well as field technicians and amateur level. These people have not generally reached the skill level via plumage, but they can enter the method in its most complete version. This will allow them to acquire the skill in a long time and have the rest of their lives to perfect themselves and obtain the highest quality data. People belonging to this second group can learn guided by an ID expert by printing or be self-taught with the book. The third group would be made up of professionals who have years of identification via plumage but are not yet experts because their basic collection is very extensive or because they travel a lot, changing their basic collection often and radically, for example those that go from the avifauna of the northern hemisphere to that of the southern hemisphere or tropical hemisphere. Such variability is addressed much better from the methodology of ID by jizz. The fourth group already commented is that of those observers who have already acquired the ID expertise for plumage and associated jizz. Many of them believe that methodically learn to identify by jizz does not bring any improvement, although as we have seen is not entirely true, far from it.

5. Duration and effort of learning for the methodical ID of jizz: The first group, that of children and adolescents, it is good that they begin with a simplified method, that a teacher guides them and that they go as a group to the field. 6. Time needed to operate a card in the field: Acquired dexterity takes seconds to generate sentences and write them. 7. For the first phase a semester well spent would be enough.

8. If an observer always lives in the same place and habitat, is it worth acquiring the ID by jizz?: If an observer who is already an expert in the ID via plumage remains in a small territory with few homogeneous habitats and with few species of birds, it may not be worth the effort, but even if it were just `to cut the routine and have a new point of view of what he has been doing for so many years, it would be worth it. Not to mention that it would improve the efficiency of his skill. Identify a bird, even in bad conditions of sight, including bad weather, remoteness or backlighting, allows not to miss information that would be lost, have a better representation of the birds of the habitat and associate birds whose identification would be lost, to the ecological position that occupy. Some questions that the observer asks about the conscious and regulated learning of the ID by jizz

How does the method to identify birds by jizz work? Why identify birds by jizz ?, How does it benefit me according to my profession and experience? What do I get? Does it require a lot of preparation? Does it take a lot of effort? It takes a lot of time? Does it require a lot of prior knowledge? I need a teacher? Can I do it self-taught? Can I apply it to all kinds of birds? Can I apply the method to other animals? Can I apply that method to my profession? What benefits do I have? What problems do I solve? I'm old enough? What is the ideal age? Is it better to learn alone or in the company of students and teachers? I already identify by impression because I have a lot of experience, can the method also serve to me? There are applications that already identify birds, what do I have to learn to identify by impression? I will try to respond in the most objective and realistic way possible to each of them.

How does the method to identify birds by jizz work in practice?

Perhaps it is the question that raises the most need for information. This is the simplest and most practical way to proceed: In the field, once the bird is observed, evaluate in writing the 10 variables of the main card. Write each sentence as briefly and as accurately as possible. In cabinet, synthesize the sentences of the same trait variables (structure, habitat, behavior and plumage) into a single integrated sentence. Try to identify the species with a bird guide. Both operations, evaluation and synthesis, generate impressions of the bird that has observed. If you repeat the operation, for a time, with birds of the same species, the number of impressions of individuals of the same species will generate an integrated impression of the species. At this time, when you return to observe and operate an new individual of a given species, the subconscious memory will act quickly and an instantaneous identification will occur.

Basically, that's it. Go out into the field, observe a bird from which you evaluate 10 variables, write down the sentences in the variables on a tab of your mobile phone, and back at home synthesize the sentences of the variables of a trait in a single sentence. This will have generated impressions of an individual of a species. If you repeat this operation a sufficient number of times, you will achieve the formation of integrated impressions from each species observed and identify them reliably, quickly and even in poor sighting conditions.

Why identify birds by jizz ?

It is the second question more asked. Let's see. Identifying by jizz, ...increase your efficiency and reliability in your bird IDs (and many species of non-avian fauna). The operation of images observed in the field, generate impressions in the subconscious memory, much more stable and faster than the cortical memory, which is what the brain uses after a classical scientific analysis. In this way, jizz improves the efficiency, speed of ID, reliability, representativeness and universality to the ID via plumage. And this is true at the species level and is crucial for the ID of very similar species and the ages and sexes of highly variable plumage species.

Jizz allows you create a holistic view of the bird immersed in its environment. Jizz is universal and can be applied to any bird of any habitat. To provide the basic information of the necessary place, a local bird guide is enough. The ID by jizz is representative, that is, the result of the jizz survey of the avian population of a habitat, is representative of the species found in the environment. ID by jizz is faster and more reliable because the memory involved in the process, the subconscious, is very stable and fast (see before). Jizz is more efficient because birds can be identified even in poor sighting conditions.

Conclusion

When you are an expert identifying birds, after long years of identifying by plumage, you will actually be identifying by jizz (see previous article "Birding by impression unconscious vs conscious"). Why not save that tremendous amount of time, become an expert in bird identification via jizz in a reasonable time, and dedicate the time saved to get good data of birds at a glance?

The gestation of the method

When I started writing the book, in my mind there was no other idea than to find a method, as simple as possible, that would allow the observer to acquire the skill of the Birding by impression (jizz) in a reasonable time, and not in the long years that are needed if identification is used via plumage, (see article 3 conscious and unconscious). When I wrote the book, I had no idea what the dynamics of the method would be like, even though its structure did have it. The necessary elements and the way to operate them were emerging little by little from observations, ideas, readings, trial and error. Naturally the method had to be scientifically consistent and it had to work! And he did.

How does Birding by impression work? It starts, from the operation of images observed in the field, the subconscious memory, much more stable and faster than the cortical memory, which is what the brain uses after a classical scientific analysis. In this way, jizz improves the efficiency, speed of ID, reliability, representativeness and universality to the ID via plumage. And this is true at the species level and is crucial for the ID of very similar species and the ages and sexes of highly variable plumage species.

Potential users

Once the method was developed, I had to see how professionals could benefit from its use. To do this, I drew up a list of professionals who could benefit from incorporating the method. They highlighted the cases of professors, researchers, consultants, managers, conservationists, disseminators, journalists of nature and indirectly, through them, students and self-taught learners children, adolescents and non-professionals. The potential users of this technology are: professional or amateur observers of birds, teachers, educators and environmental journalists. The method can be the subject of exhibitions in museums and zoos. It is susceptible of being explained in chats and conferences, workshops or short courses. The authors of bird guides can include the impression as an added factor to the plumage. Professional researchers, librarians and booksellers will also find the technology useful. Biologists, zoologists, engineers, environmentalists, technical and forest engineers, bird census enumerators, professionals of learning with the right side of the brain, consultants, ornithological guides, technicians of environmental departments in governments and municipalities, NGO ornithologists, as well as professionals from conservation and nature study institutions, whose motto is change and innovation; and in a near future, in 2020, the students of the Finnish educational system.

Learning mode

Being a new method, there are no people familiar with it and professionals, researchers, consultants, managers, conservationists, disseminators and nature journalists will be among the professors, from which the self-taught students will emerge, in charge of learning and transmitting it. People with sufficient maturity to be self-taught, can acquire skill without major problem just by following the argument and the exercises proposed in the book.

By requiring a certain amount of knowledge, perseverance and regularity in field trips, cabinet work and execution of the exercises, many people will prefer in many cases to be guided by professors with proven didactic and zoological or ecological experience.

Of course, children and adolescents need a teacher to guide them in this endeavor, introduce them, supervise them and allow them to comment among themselves on their field experiences. And those in charge of organizing workshops and workshops for children and adolescents in the countryside should follow a similar path.

Non-university beginners and experienced amateurs should also attend an introductory course to identification by printing.

To introduce university students, theory lessons and a few field trips to operate the cards would be sufficient, within a subject of taxonomy, zoology or ecology.

For students of master's and doctoral students who want to work with birds should be offered the possibility of studying a practical theoretical subject of BBI.

In the same way, whatever your professional level, many professionals with less than 10 years identifying via plumage, would be grateful to be able to pass an online or BBI course with which they would increase their efficiency and understanding when it comes to identifying birds.

And although professionals with more than 10 years of experience identifying via plumage, have acquired, subconsciously, the skill of BBI, it would be good to know how the brain works in the jizz because that would allow them to increase their reliability, representativeness and performance as well as giving their skill a universal reach, if they have to travel and develop with habitats and birds for them new. Even for experts who deal with the same birds, knowing another method would allow them to judge and open their mind to new ways of doing, in addition to understanding how the brain works to become expert by conscious impression.

Finally, special mention must be made of self-taught students. Are those people who, based on the method, are able to elaborate basic information about the birds to be seen and the habitat in which they live in a specific territory, prepare periodic outings to the field and operate the variables of the cards. These people, in addition to experiencing in themselves the acquisition of such skill without having to spend long years in acquiring it unconsciously, to see how their skills improve in a patent manner, they can also transmit their knowledge to the following levels. As their status as pioneers, users and teachers, they are called to play a very important role in the development of identification by printing.

In the next articles I will describe what should be the path to be followed by the student observers according to their current level, as well as make some technical considerations to which their teachers have to be who should know the method perfectly and adapt their teaching to each level.

The correct use of learning properties of the right side of the brain allows the observer to acquire a skill prior to the proper birding by impression: the generation of impressions of the bird’s variables, located in that hemisphere. Here is how this process works.

The right side of the brain

The same information that reaches the brain is treated by each hemisphere in a different way. A speaker of a sports competition translates the images of the match into a passionate speech, using an evaluative language and the properties of the right side of the brain. Meanwhile, the left hemisphere analyses the game, infers strategies, gives names and interprets statistics.

Each hemisphere has a different way of processing information, of thinking. The left hemisphere expresses, analyses, creates symbols, abstracts, estimates, sequences time and draws linear, objective and verifiable, logical conclusions, based on experience. As it is verbal, it analyses an object and gives a name to it using words. In the case of a bird, the observer will analyze its plumage and will give a name to the species. The left hemisphere creates symbols to represent anything or action, it takes a part of the whole or abstracts. It sequences a temporary series of acts. It is literal and therefore it is very bad at using metaphors. It uses reason and facts to obtain a structured explanation from which to draw conclusions. Its explanation is linear, like the beads of a rosary where ideas are kept linked one after the other. It estimates by using figures, that is to say, by using symbols.

The right hemisphere prioritises sense and intuition. It is not linear and prioritises lateral thinking. In its sensory-visual part it works with images and comprises intelligence and spatial imagination. It carries out operations of integration of objects of the same or different nature. In the first case, it can visualise the different parts that form a whole; in the second case, it can construct complex systems of ideas.

It likes metaphors, new combinations of ideas and solving problems. It swings well between contradiction and ambiguity. As a result, it prioritises intuition, subjectivity, connectivity and interaction, it is holistic and timeless. It treats perceptions in a visual and not a verbal way. It synthesises the parts, perceives things in context (this aspect is key to the ID by impression). It lives the present. It includes metaphoric relationships, similarity among things, it compares features and variables. It does not situate events in time, but situates things in space and integrates them in a whole.

It likes visualizing and perceiving images. As its conclusions are not supported by reason or facts, it can draw conclusions from partial information, sensations, impressions, or intuitions, both from real images or memories. It can also produce a way of thinking, called holistic, that perceives objects or systems of objects as a whole, in all their complexity, but without the details that conform them. It does not like simplifying or diminishing. It includes structures and systems that integrate the object from a general point of view. Sometimes it draws different conclusions from partial elements, which the left side would find abhorrent.

Generation of impressions on the right side of the brain

The identification of birds by impression is based on characteristic features of the integration of information and the subconscious storage in the right side of the brain. On the contrary, the analysis of plumage resides in the left side of the brain since this is where the analytical features that are stored in the cortical memory predominate. In the identification process used in this book, firstly we assess the structure and behaviour variables with the right side of the brain and then we analyze the plumage through a plumage analysis that treats this information in the left side. Thus, in the last phase of the process, both hemispheres become connected and the observer reaches maximum level of interpretation. In the process of identification of birds with the right side of the brain, the image of the structure and behaviour variables of bird is operated by using specific and evaluative language and vocabulary. The assessed images are stored as impressions in the subconscious memory, the highest quality of our brain. The generated impressions that at first are faint and simple are strengthened by practice of field and desktop, until forming complex impressions.

The process of birding by impression depends on the generation of impressions of birds in the observer's right side of the brain. Over time and practice, the observer will acquire a surprising skill: when sighting a bird, impressions will produce, at a glance, an ID conclusion. It will be possible to produce positive identifications of birds.

In the process of generating impressions, the observer starts evaluating the main structure variables: size, shape and small structural variables. The structural variables are very regular marks, present in species at any age, sex and plumage status.

Next, the subordinate variables of every main variable should be operated. The subordinate variables of the main variable “small structural variables” include head, neck, bill, wings, tail and legs. These subordinate variables must be observed and, after a sum and synthesis operation, they will integrate the main variable “small structural variables”.

In the process of operating variables, through the formulation of evaluative sentences from the observation of the bird, the impressions corresponding to that variable or addition of variables are generated. Then, the results are integrated in a synthesis sentence or structure profile. The observer has generated a synthesis impression of the structure and now they can contemplate the structure profile in its totality. A collateral effect of having a good picture of the bird's structure is that this helps to place it in the taxonomic family to which it belongs.

Once the structure profile is obtained, the observer will try to acquire the behaviour profile. To do so, they will assess the behaviour variables, to the extent that it is possible as they are free-living birds, in order to generate the corresponding impressions. The main and subordinate variables of behaviour included in this book are: movements (repetitive, functional and mating), flight, vocalizations and the “ecological position” (season and habitat). Again, once variables have been observed, a behaviour profile will be elaborated. Thus, the observer will achieve a whole impression of the behaviour variables of the species. In many cases, behaviour is decisive to identify the species under observation.

In the evaluation of variables and elaboration of the structure and behaviour profiles, the repetitive practice generates a lot of integrated, simple and complex, impressions of birds.

The right side of the brain and the birding by impression

Works of Dunne, Karlson, Rosselet, Blomdhal, Breife, Holstrom and Jodra confirm the great performances and achievements of the conscious ID by impression, although the development of this technology for its learning is an exclusive responsibility of the author of this book. Karlson, observer by plumage at the start of his career, now expert in identification by impression, says: “after using this ID approach for several years, we have found our field skills increasing dramatically” (Karlson and Rosselet, 2015). Karlson discovered that his skills as a bird-watcher in the field multiplied through identifying by impression.

Additionally, the impact of right side of the brain learning gains daily support in many other professional fields; learning to write, drawing and even golf, among others, have developed learning technologies that involve the right side of the brain.

Impression, the right side of the brain, wins. Daniel H Pink (2016), an expert in the field of motivation in work, ensures that "the future belongs to the right hemisphere. We have reached a point where systematization, computation and automation are transformed to give way to new competencies known as high concept: this is where intuition, creativity, empathy and the right side are integrated, that characterises good leaders: visionary, intuitive and very able to see in perspective, never in an atomised, biased or reductionist way. Reflection is considered, as well as creation of a good social climate. In turn, excellence is sought as well as fostering that conscious and innovative spirit that will undoubtedly be the key to the future. You just have to believe enough in yourself so that sooner or later the world will discover everything that can offer that look that understands life from the heart and through the right hemisphere".

Birding by impression unconscious vs conscious BBI

Non conscious procedure

It has been seen that an observer who identifies through plumage acquires the status of expert bird identification by jizz after many years of practice. Paterson (2000), an important author of the seabirds of Spain and Portugal, with many years of experience through plumage, says that “…even after decades of observation... The knowledge base is built slowly... To be an expert observer takes time”. This is so because the true identification does not occur in most cases through plumage, but through evaluation of the holistic variables that the observer by plumage continuously and subconsciously incorporates, and acquires after long years of observation.

The great David Sibley, a seasoned American ornithologist, pioneer and editor of excellent bird guides, stated in 2005 that "bird identification is based in most cases on a kind of subjective impression caused by the way the bird moves, as well as by the succession of instantaneous appearances from different angles; and as the bird moves the head, flies and rotates, it allows you to see sequences of different shapes and angles. All this combines and creates a unique impression of a bird that, in fact, cannot be separated from the set and explained with words. When you observe a bird in the field, you do not stop to analyse it to say “it has this, that and that, so it must be an example of such a species. It is something much more natural and instinctive. After much practice, one looks at the bird and feels as if small switches were activated in the brain. It is what it seems. You know what is it at first glance”.

It is difficult to better express how the process of identifying a bird actually occurs in the mind of an observer through plumage: fast ID conclusion, at a glance. Subjective, that cannot be transmitted. With little relevance of plumage details. It does not have a rational explanation for what happens. Its acquisition requires a lot of practice, does not require technology, it is not conscious and needs years to develop. The reader will have recognised this kind of identification, which we have come to call "jizz".

The "jizz" ID conclusion is achieved after years of conscious observation of the plumage and unconscious observation of the variables, of holistic nature, associated with the bird and its environment. At the same time the observer analyses plumage in a conscious way, its unconscious captures the rest of the bird's variables such as structure, behaviour and ecological position. This process is made more or less unconscious during years of practice.

Technology of this book has been designed with the aim of mastering, in a reasonable time, what an expert by plumage takes years to acquire.

The conscious birding by impression

This book provides tools to acquire the needed dexterity to identify familiar birds (not rare) at a glance, even in adverse conditions of visibility. Detection of a rare bird will be by exclusion, as soon as it is spotted. It also provides an integral knowledge of the bird immersed in its environment. It is an effective, fast, stable and universally applicable mental resource.

The book shows a technology created for the observer to learn to identify birds by impression, after an active, systematic and conscious process. The method, and learning of birding by impression is based on the integrative properties of the right hemisphere and occurs after a process of generation of impressions (PGI). In this process, the main holistic root variables of the sighted bird are operated in a predetermined order. To construct the sentences, result of variable operation, an evaluative language is used. The mere elaboration of evaluative sentences made as well with evaluative language generates impressions in the right hemisphere. With practice, and throughout the process of practical learning, a complex impression will be produced by the accumulation of simple impressions of a species, a prelude to the sudden identification of the bird. The observer will verify that he can identify such species at a glance, without stopping to evaluate its variables.

Conscious procedure

With the neurological investigations carried out from the new millennium it was shown that the brain functions are dispersed, to a certain extent, in the cerebral volume, therefore, they do not have a specific location. Nevertheless, it is assumed that the integrative and holistic functions predominate in the right side of the brain, while on the left the analytic and disintegrating functions of a whole in its parts are very relevant. To be more precise we should talk about “functions of the left hemisphere” or “functions of the right hemisphere” to refer to the nature of cerebral functions and not to the topographic place they could occupy in the brain. With the valorization of the potentialities of the right side of the brain, emerged authors who incorporated these properties to the learning of the most varied subjects, from music to languages.

Technology of birding by impression requires the observer to consciously apply techniques and method, in order to generate holistic impressions. Identifying with the right side of the brain makes it possible for birders of any level to acquire a much improved version of jizz dexterity from expert observers through plumage in a significantly shorter time than needed if the "not conscious" jizz identification is used.

1. About the Identification by Impression (Jizz) have speaking from the 50´s. Already, in the famous guide of Peterson, Mounfort and Hollom, its existence was signing up. It is a delightful bird guide but its functioning is like the common guides, comparing illustrations with wild birds, in this case also with illustrations of its structure and behavior. On having acted like a Guide, it does not present a structured and systematical method to operate variables with evaluative language, the way to generate impressions.

3. Gladwell, M. in "Blink" (2005), includes a splendid interview with Sibley, where he reflects on the identification by impression. Sibley knows that it exists and that it is the best way of identifying in practice, but it does not understand how it is acquired, and much mor less in a conscious way, via a structured method.

4. Perhaps, who earlier drafted its bases, but without creating a structured method, was Dunne, P. in “Field Guide Companion” of 2006. Kaufman, K. in “Field Guide to advanced birding (2011), compares the advantages between identifying via plumage and via impression. Neither it comprises the mechanics of its learning. Blomdahl, T, Breife, B. and Holstrom, N., understands the identification for impression in“ Flight identification on european seabirds (2012). They use a evaluative language to produce the variables of the flight but, conclude, that it is a very subjective system in that the observer neither knows how it obtains it, and cannot even transmit it to others, although they notice that it is a process very efficient and, in some conditions, the possible only one.

5. Finally, in 2015, Roger Tory Peterson Institut published “Birding by Impression” signed by Karlson, T. and Rosslet, D. It is a Guide of the birds of North America prepared with skills of identification for impression. For the first time, it signs up, in a plain way, a method for ID by impression, but it does not happen of design a general protocol.

6. Finally, the method developed in this book of Jodra Arilla, PJ (2017) “Learn to identify birds by impression,”, is not a Guide (differs between learning for comparison between the bird with the illustrations of the Guides of birds). The impressions are obtained whit operating variables and the composition of his correspondent sentences with evaluative language to generate impressions, of the type of the treated ones by the right part of the brain, after the operation of the variables chosen from the bird.

The variables are the structure, the behavior and the ecology. The plumage analysis of the bird complements whith the left part of the brain. This way, the two parts of the brain are activated and the informations associate in images and texts. There are properties of the present method the one that is sequenced and structured to be able to produce the key variables of a bird and power like that to generate imperishable impressions managed by the very stable and powerful memory subconscious.

The method departs from a holistic point of view from the birds (a living being adapting itself in an environment), not disintegrated in its parts. That is practical and contains numerous field exercises therefore it is valid so much for self-educated as for the teachers or experienced Birders.

Karlson KT, confesses in “Birding by impression” that being already an expert observer, they had to convince him so that he was adopting the identification as impression but that, now, its performances as observer of birds have multiplied. I believe that he is saying everything. "Birding by impression (2.015)": "After using this ID approach for several years, we have found our field skills increasing dramatically, especially in marginal or difficult viewing conditions".

Learning how to identify birds by impression is a theoretical-practical book, which allows the observer to identify birds by impression, after carrying out the practical exercises that it proposes. This book is not a bird guide, but a method for identifying wild birds. The book is composed of two parts: the first one, theoretical, deals with impressions, how they are born and what the result of their operation is. The second part, practical, teaches how to operate the variables and thus generate impressions, through the combination of field and at desk exercises. With practice, the observer will experience birding by impression.

The method is based in the acquisition of a familiarisation to the bird and its environment and, for that, it uses holistic variables that include in addition to plumage, ecology, structure and behaviour. Familiarisation is obtained through the generation of own impressions of the right side of the brain (Karlson K and Rosselet D, 2015), induced after the operation of such variables. Impressions are housed in the fast subconscious memory, which allows an instant retrieval of the image, associated to the name of the bird that generated the impression. Variable operations are evaluation, synthesis and comparison. The evaluation is the basic operation for each variable; through synthesis, the evaluated variables of a same nature are grouped; comparison is used when dealing with a set of species of the same genus or family. Each operation is solved in one sentence and the generation of simple impressions takes place during the elaboration of the sentences. The complex impressions will appear after synthesis and comparison. Acting in a conscious, proactive and systematic way, the observer increases and improves efficacy, efficiency, universality and representativeness of their skill in wild bird identification, and they do it in a significantly lower time than required if they had used traditional methods through plumage, GISS (Dunne P, 2006) or jizz (Blomdahl A, Breife B and Holstrom N, 2012).

The potential users of this technology are: professional or amateur observers of birds, teachers, educators and environmental journalists that can elaborate a degree subject, master, doctorate or vocational training. The method can be the subject of exhibitions in museums and zoos. It is susceptible of being explained in chats and conferences, workshops or short courses. The authors of bird guides can include the impression as an added factor to the plumage. Professional researchers, librarians and booksellers will also find the technology useful. Biologists, zoologists, engineers, environmentalists, technical and forest engineers, bird census enumerators, professionals of learning with the right side of the brain, consultants, ornithological guides, technicians of environmental departments in governments and municipalities, NGO ornithologists, as well as professionals from conservation and nature study institutions, whose motto is change and innovation; and in a near future, in 2020, the students of the Finnish educational system.

Aprender a identificar aves por impresión, es un libro eminentemente práctico que, tras la realización de los ejercicios que propone, el observador queda capacitado para la identificación de aves por impresión. Este libro no es pues una guía de aves, sino que desarrolla un método de identificación de aves silvestres.

El método se basa en adquirir una familiarización de conjunto del ave y su entorno y, por ello, utiliza variables holísticas que incluyen además del plumaje, la ecología, la estructura y el comportamiento. La familiarización se obtiene mediante la generación de impresiones propias del lado derecho del cerebro (Karlson K y Rosselet D, 2015), que se generan tras la operación de dichas variables. Las impresiones se alojan en la veloz memoria subconsciente que, permite una recuperación instantánea de la imagen asociada al nombre del ave que generó la impresión.

Las operaciones de variables son la evaluación, la síntesis y la comparación de las variables holísticas. El libro "Identificación Ecológica de Aves" siembra los cimientos teóricos para identificar aves mediante un sistema no convencional, en el que predomina el lado derecho del cerebro, denominado "identificación por impresión".

Los métodos tradicionales, usan únicamente el análisis del plumaje vía la desagregación en sus partes usando para ello la región izquierda del cerebro, de recuperación más lenta y basada en palabras y detalles.

La impresión usa la parte derecha del cerebro basada en imágenes intuitivas, integradoras, de matriz holística (estructura, comportamiento, uso del hábitat además del plumaje) y fácilmente recuperables por la memoria subconsciente. El resultado es que con la práctica, la capacidad de identificar las aves no raras se multiplica. Donde no llega la identificación por impresión, en aves raras o muy semejantes, se complementa con la "Identificación avanzada por el plumaje" que constituyen una minoría en un safari habitual.

Este primer volumen contiene las bases teóricas de una metodología práctica, que está en avanzada fase de preparación, que se publicará en un segundo volumen, un manual práctico y sencillo de usar para adquirir tal destreza. El método requiere familiarizarse con las aves comunes, lo que lleva tiempo. Con el tiempo, la eficiencia y eficacia del observador para identificar aves aumenta significativamente, incluso en condiciones mediocres de avistamiento.

En la reseña de Alberto Díaz Rueda (Prensa Bajo Aragón) podéis apreciar la doble vertiente del libro tanto la técnica de Identificación de Aves por impresión, como la educativa de considerar a las aves como un conjunto inmerso en su entorno, es decir, desde un punto de vista integrador u holístico.

Realmente es muy atractiva la forma como Jodra Arilla nos enseña a participar en su amor por los "safaris" de conocimiento. Solo por ello y como posible acicate a una muy sana afición, la ornitología de campo, vale la pena leer con cuidado este libro y aplicar sus sugerencias a los paseos por el monte.

Hay dos reflexiones que un lector común se plantea al conocer y leer este libro de consulta. La primera es bastante obvia: el desconocimiento palmario que la mayoría de los lectores tiene sobre las aves, sus clases, sus plumajes, sus hábitos y sus características es tan palmaria y vergonzante que llama la atención. Consecuencia inmediata: los fallos, carencias y vacíos de la educación pública -o privada- en este país.

Un libro como éste del biólogo Pablo José Jodra Arilla, debería ser de uso obligatorio en los institutos de enseñanza media y si me apuran en los de educación primaria. Junto con otro semejante dedicado a árboles, flores y fauna. Al menos, señores educadores, los de la zona del país donde radican los centros. Y la segunda es un poco más sibilina: la premisa esencial, metodológica del texto de Jodra es la forma "nueva" de identificar aves. Nos dice el autor que además del plumaje, colores, disposiciones y siluetas, propone otras características a tener en cuenta, como la estructura ecológica de la zona y el comportamiento del ave en cuestión con respecto a sus congéneres, su vuelo o los elementos naturales de la zona.

Así se propone una visión "holística" de las aves teniendo en cuenta todos los elementos disponibles. Ese análisis aporta una serie de elementos en cuya síntesis deviene una forma de identificación más certera y exacta. Y, evidentemente, se aclara la forma de utilizar los elementos teóricos en el trabajo de campo. Es decir, sin animo de frivolizar, es aplicar los métodos inductivos y deductivos de un Sherlock Holmes o un Hércules Poirot al avistamiento e identificación de aves. Es decir, algo que Agatha Christie y Conan Doyle nunca explicaron a sus lectores: tales métodos tiene una venerable antigüedad: pertenece a los atomistas griegos, de Demóstenes a Pitágoras, Anaxímenes o Tales de Mileto, que ya recomendaban para la observación y conocimiento de la naturaleza y sus fenómenos unas técnicas muy, muy semejantes a las que Jodra Arilla propone en su magnífico y aclaratorio libro.

La moraleja de esta reseña se resume en algo que he percibido leyendo aquí y allá por las páginas del libro: el entusiasmo del autor por comunicar sus conocimientos sobre las aves, el amor de este a los espacios naturales libres –es un fanático de los Ports, cosa que comparto- y una muy sana ambición de dar categoría científica a su sistema de avistamiento e identificación.

Realmente es muy atractiva la forma como Jodra Arilla nos enseña a participar en su amor por los "safaris" de conocimiento. Solo por ello y como posible acicate a una muy sana afición, la ornitología de campo, vale la pena leer con cuidado este libro y aplicar sus sugerencias a los paseos por el monte.

La identificación holística de aves por impresión es un cambio en el modo de identificar y de percibir a las aves.

1. Holística vs vía plumaje:

La identificación es holística porque considera al conjunto integrado del ave inmerso en su entorno: ecología, estructura, comportamiento, uso del espacio y plumaje.

2. Impresión vs análisis:

La identificación por impresión usa el lóbulo cerebral derecho, no el izquierdo, que se usa en los procesos tradicionales analíticos del plumaje de desagregación en sus partes. La memoria subconsciente, la familiarización, son palabras clave.

3. Descripción y comparación:

La metodología es sistemática y repetitiva hasta alcanzar una familiarización. Para ello el observador usa la descripción y la comparación de marcas entre especies de la misma familia. Para especies raras o muy similares se usa la iD avanzada por el plumaje.

4. Hábitat vs grupo taxonómico:
