One of the favorite stops and also one of the most beautiful beaches in the world is Horseshoe Bay in Bermuda. For those thrifty cruise travelers that don’t wish to book a fancy excursion and pay per person rates, this itinerary below may be right for you if you just wanted to do your own tour. Our do it yourself excursion is for a 6 – 8 hour trip, but you have to watch your time if your ship leaves the same day. Allow enough time for travel, getting through customs and back on board. Horseshoe Bay Beach is a Public Beach and has restroom and changing facilities. So, to plan your trip, you can pack your towels and a bag. Be sure to ask for a map of Bermuda as you leave the ship. They usually provide a map for shopping that has the details on Hamilton. For the island, when you buy your transportation pass, they usually provide a small map with the routes. For planning, Horseshoe Bay Beach has chair and umbrella rentals so take some cash if you are planning to rent (No Credit Cards) or purchases snacks. You are probably wondering about the money used in Bermuda as I mention cash needs for the transportation, shopping, and public beaches. Bermuda has Bermudian money, but they also accept US Dollars. However, you do want want to have on hand smaller bills in Bermuda as getting change for larger USD could be a challenge in some stores and shops. Some stores do take credit cards, however the public beach chair rentals and the public transportation was a cash only transaction. Horseshoe Bay Beach has beach chair rentals and rest room, and changing room facilities. For this trip, you want some good walking shoes and beach attire. So with these plans made ahead of time, let’s start our excursion!

Horseshoe Bay Beach in Bermuda

First, if you are docked at Kings Wharf, or Hamilton Bermuda, we recommend that you split your time up into 2 visits. If your disembark in the morning and sail late afternoon, you do have time to do both a sight-seeing trip to Hamilton and then venture over to the beach. At King’s Wharf, you want to get off the ship and purchase an all day Ferry and Bus pass for about $15.00 USD. If you plan to take a ferry to Hamilton, then use a taxi for the remainder of the trip, then you can purchase a 1 way ferry pass. After purchasing your pass, follow the side walk around the port to the ferry. Be sure to ask what line is for Hamilton as they have a Ferry that goes to other destinations. If you didnt want to use the public transportation, there is Taxi service from the ship for around 40.00 one way. The taxi’s usually hold 4-5 people. If you have a group, ask about a min-bus. The Mini-Bus usually charges a straight head count fee for 1-way trip. Typically, the mini bus is about 7 dollars from the ship to Horseshoe Bay Beach. And, be sure to return from the beach in plenty of time. When you walk up from the beach stand to the Taxi, there are usually plenty of taxi’s waiting, and if you look around, you will find the min-bus attendant as well. So, getting to Horseshoe Bay Beach from the ship, you have 3 options. 1) The Public Bus system. 2) Taxi, or 3) Mini-Bus. Or through the Ship’s Excursion tour if you want to count that!

**Update for 2018**
The Port was updated and Kings Wharf is now called Heritage Wharf and is continued to be improved. The Mini Bus was stil 7.00 USD pp and Horseshoe Bay Beach had Mini-bus return trips. Just don’t wait til last minute since they fill fast.

Horseshoe Bay beach also had some improvements. They have Sand Chairs for rent for 15.00 USD, or Loungers for 18.00 USD to rent. Umbrellas were 15.00 USD. EZ Up rentals were much more. They also had Snorkel Gear for rent. The public rest rooms and changing rooms are the same as shown in my posts. There is a food stand and also a bar now with outdoor seating. Bermuda is a favorite stop!!

A bit about Hamilton Bermuda. Just a Water Ferry Ride away from Kings Wharf!

Once you arrive in Hamilton, you will be dropped off at Front Street at the Front Street Ferry Terminal.

Front Street in Downtown Hamilton Bermuda

The Ferry arrives on Front Street, you can walk around and if you want to do some shopping there are plenty of store front shops on front Street and this vicinity. If you stay within a few blocks of front street you will find cafe’s, stores and plenty to see. We were lucky enough to see a parade both times we visited Bermuda, so ask at the information desk if any special activities are occurring. On Queen Street, there is the historical society museum. The museum pass was about $10.00 per person. One thing you will notice about Bermuda are the wonderful flowers on the trees. There is a local artist who paints these blossoms and has a store at 81 Front Street. Be sure to stop in and check out the prints. Back towards the Ferry Terminal, we found a small shop right on Queen Street called Flying Colours that had a variety of shirts, hats, and Bermuda souvenirs. On the other side of the street was a small mall with more shops and cafes. And further up the top of the hill and to the right on Church Street you will find the bus station to the right of Town Hall and Arts Center. This is where you will head when you are ready to travel over to the Horseshoe Bay Beach. There are plenty of shops. If you are pressed for time, you can hail a taxi in this same vicinity. A min-van taxi fare will run about $27.00-$35.00 each trip but does save you some time and can take up to 4 to 5 people. If you take the bus, you want to look for the route that goes on the beach route. When we are in town in 2012, Route 7 was the one we needed that goes from Hamilton to Kings Wharf (Dockyard) by way of the outer roads. As you board the bus, just make sure you tell the driver you will want to stop at Horseshoe Bay Beach. The bus trip from Hamilton to Horseshoe Bay Beach is not far by one of the bus routes. Just walk up to the bus station in town, or you can consider a taxi for faster time. One thing you do want to do is plan your trip in Hamilton and at the Beach to allow enough time to get back to the ship and checked in at least 30 minutes prior to their call. In general, we allowed a full hour before anchor up. So, plan your time accordingly. We took the bus, route 7, from Hamilton Bus Station at Church and Washington Streets.

Upon arrival at the Horseshoe Bay bus stop, there is a walk from the main road down hill to the beach area (Click HERE to see). Its about 1/4 mile walk down a path. It’s not too bad of a walk going down, but coming up could be a challenge for some. The taxi’s have a shuttle at the bottom of the hill to the top for about $2.00 per person. (Or if you plan to take a Taxi back to the Dockyard in lieu of the bus system, you will have the opportunity to pick up a cab after your stay at the beach. If you are pressed for time, you may want to think about a taxi for about $40.00. – otherwise, the walk up to the bus stop is needed to pick up the bus.) If you have a group, please check out the mini-bus person that usually sits opposite of the Taxi stands. The minibus is about 7.00 per person one way. And, if you do walk up the hill to the bus stop, just make sure you pick the correct bus headed for the dockyard for those ships at Kings Wharf Port. Otherwise, cross the street and look for the bus returning to Hamilton, Bermuda.

A bit about Horseshoe Bay.

Horseshoe Bay Beach is a Public Beach and has restroom and changing facilities. The beach also has a rental stand where you can rent Umbrellas and Beach Chairs for about $15.00 each. There is also a snack stand set up for some light refreshments. And, while we were there a tent outside the rental shop had beer and wine sales. Once you are a changed, settled and on the beach, you will find this to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It’s fine coral sand is not silicon based, so it has a warm, but cool and soft feel to your feet. The public beach has a food snack stand, beer, soda, and light snacks. We had no issues renting a chair and umbrella even at a peak time when the Cruise Ship guests were on the beach. It is well maintained area.

Bermuda’s Horseshoe Bay Beach Rental and Snack Stand

When you are on the beach, you may want to go to the far left if you don’t like crowds. Typically, the far left side of the beach has less people. Also, if you venture over that way through a path, you will find another cove that is absolutely breath-taking. Be sure to to look around. On the right side of the beach, is another cove and we saw some guests with small children using that beach because the it was shallow and a bit more contained than the open beach in the front. In August, the water and air temperatures were in the low 8o’s and you can see from the picture below how spectacular the beach and water is in Bermuda. This beach is absolutely stunning. See the picture below!

It’s water is crystal clear as a swimming pool, and you can snorkel or swim. It had a lifeguards on duty when we were there. We did not see anyone with flotation devices such as rafts or mats, etc. The water and sand was absolutely beautiful. It was a very nice beach and worth the visit for a fraction of the cost of a tour. It has plenty of room even when it was crowded with the Cruise Ship crowds. Just allow plenty of time to get back to your ship. Departure from these public beaches can get quite crowded especially around the time when everyone leaves to go back to the ship. There are buses, taxi, shared taxi based on PP rates, or if you use the Excursions from the ship, then your set meeting time to return.

Bermuda Beach Shore Excursion

Bermuda is a magnificent cruise stop for travelers. This article will discuss the beaches you can find during your stop at Bermuda. Some are public beaches and some are private.

For first time travelers, a little unknown secret about Bermuda is their public buses. For a small fee, you can take the public buses just about anywhere on the island. The fare depends on the distance you plan to to travel. But, the price is not bad if you plan to do your own shore excursion. They also have taxis. A mini-bus right at Heritage Wharf is available for 7.00USD per person to take you to Horseshoe Bay Beach. Look for the sighs. And, the return trip is the same, and they have signs or a director helping you to get back to the ship. Just leave early enough.

Once at Horseshoe Bay Beach, there are Public Restrooms, changing facilities, and also food/beverage. On the beach is a stand for chair rentals, beach umbrella rentals and snorkel rentals. Average price is around 15.00 USD for Sand Chair rental. Slightly more for lounger rental.

If you are docked out by the Heritage Wharf, also called the former Royal Navy ship yard, you may want to go to Snorkel Park Beach. There is a fee, but you will find this a very popular stop as it is within a few minutes walking distance from the pier. A commercial establishment, but you will find amenities, water sports, rentals, entertainment, rest rooms.
If you are docked near Hamilton, or wish to take the bus or taxi, a popular public beach is Horseshoe Bay Beach or Elbow Beach. This is just a short drive via the bus or taxi. Horseshoe Bay Beach is public beach that has rentals, restrooms, and a food stand for small items to purchase. Elbow Beach also has a private and public beach surrounding it, so, you may find an on ship excursion that may take you to the private beaches that offer more amenities. Bermuda’s sand is not shell based, it is coral based. So, you will find it cooler, soft, silky and smooth to touch. There is nothing like it. Take off of your shoes and and enjoy the cooler feeling of coral based beaches. If you decide to do your own excursions to these beaches, just remember to check your time and leave within plenty of time to return to your ship. Allow for sufficient time to travel using their bus schedules or flag down a taxi to return. You don’t want to miss your ship!

Well, I always see the comments in the RCCL blog feeds about the Formal Night. While I wouldn’t mind one night being a bit formal since it is nice to see everyone dressed up, they have 2 nights on a 7-10 day cruise. That is a bit much. And, then after sailing, it seems there are differences of opinion on adhering to the dress code to start with. I fully understand, It’s more things to pack, especially if you are bringing small children on the ship. So, in my humble opinion, I think the standard dress code they have which is pretty much what I have for expectations to eat at a fine dining establishment and should be sufficient without going all in on formal attire. That rule should be it for the Main Dining Room without a mandate. However, if someone ones to be more formal, go for it, as that is what you would see at a fine dining restaurant. No one ever comments that someone over dressed. It usually under-dressed comments in the blogs. I just think for the respect of the main dining room restaurant, there should be some appropriate attire expected, but sadly even that is pushed to the limit for a dining establishment. But hey. It is a vacation after all. You pay plenty for the cruise, and I think removing of the traditional formal night is fine by me. Bottom Line.. Enjoy your vacation.

Here is the post I spotted the article on:

When you dock at Kings Wharf, Bermuda, there are several ways to get around Bermuda. One of the fastest ways to Hamilton is by water ferry. For a small fee, they can shuttle you by ferry right over to Hamilton, Bermuda. As you exit the ship, head towards the dock and around the bend you find the location for boarding the Water Ferry and ticket purchases. The panoramic picture above was taken right there by the water front, so you can see the lovely colors of the buildings and shops. There are a number of local shops here, and you can spend time walking the town. As you turn around, the beautiful harbor stares back at you. It’s not so deep, and in the past only the shallow draft cruise ships were able to dock here in Hamilton right up against the bulkhead. The smaller cruise ships from years past had a shallow draft of 22-24 feet and were able to make it in here and dock in this vicinity. Now, these larger vessels are docked out by Kings Wharf and you can use the Ferry, Cab, or their Bus passes to get around the island. The cost is not too bad, so take some cash with you for fares.

You docked at Kings Wharf Bermuda, now called Heritage Wharf, but your ship is only in port for a day or two? What do you do? Well, don’t panic if you didn’t book a shore excursion. DIY – Do it yourself! Within walking distance of the ship, there is the Royal Navy Dockyard. Each time we return to Bermuda, we see this area just keeps on growing with new activities, shops and vendors. Check out the WebCam! They even have a courtesy shuttle from the ship’s gangway over to the information booth to save you some walking. From that location, you can catch the Water Ferries to Hamilton or St Georges. Just be sure to check the Ferry schedules so that you allow plenty of time to get back to your ship! The information center is very helpful and also sells some souvenirs. If you are looking for lunch near by, check out the Frog and Onion pub (http://frogandonion.bm/). Also, past the Information Center, you will find a Bonefish Grill, and some local shops and cafes. There is also a museum, and if you walk the path to the one end, you run into Snorkel Park Beach.

Snorkel Park Beach is a private beach and does have an admission, but there is also a bar on the beach, so ask if there is a fee if you just going to the bar. There are signs posted. We also spotted a Mini Golf course near the Snorkel Park entrance too. From the ship, follow the walkway over to the information center and go to your right. Follow that street down to the back side of the Dockyard. Snorkel Park, the Museum, and the cafe’s are all there. If you are in a time crunch, and really do not have time to get to some of the other beaches, such as Horseshoe Bay Beach, Snorkel Park is an alternative. It is a smaller beach and since there are usually 2 cruise ships in port at a time, you do want to get there early if you intend on renting a chair (probably before 11am). You can also rent snorkel gear and there are reefs to see at Snorkel Park beach. The beach area is smaller than Horseshoe Bay Beach, so check out my article on Horseshoe Bay Beach if you want to do your own excursion to that beach.

There are limited activities in the area, and typically there are taxi’s right outside the Ship’s gangway if you plan to use a Taxi to get around. There are a few options for you to travel in Bermuda. Taxi, Mini-Bus, or the Water Ferries. The Public Transportation tickets for the Bus and Water Ferries are sold right outside the Gangway, or over by the Information Center. In 2014, the cost was around $5.00 US 1 way, or you can purchase an all day pass. There was a children rate that was less money. Just be sure to check the timing so you make it back to your ship on time! If you are staying in the port area because of the time crunch, the Royal Navy Dockyard is an opportunity. As always, watch your time so you have ample time to walk back to the ship before sailing.

Philipsburg has a fairly new cruise terminal and is a popular stop for ships. Once the ships dock here, it is just a short water taxi ride over to the Philipsburg, or you can walk to town that will take you about 20 minutes. Once in town, you will find a beach and a paved area that resembles a board walk at some of the USA beaches on the east coast. The mile long paved walk is lined with shops, cafes, and bars. There are also hotels around this area. There are also very nice cafes and bars along the strip. So, if you wanted to do something on your own, you can explore the shops and cafe’s spread across Philipsburg and experience some local cooking.

When you walk into town just outside this beach area on Front Street, there are plenty of shops, so this is definitely a port-of-call for shoppers.

Many shops line the streets in both directions. Jewelry shops, electronics, and alcohol cater to those looking for duty free shopping.

The water and beach areas are very beautiful and clean. This is a very beautiful stop for cruise travelers. Check with your cruise shore excursions list to see what beach tours they have available. This port-of-call has many shore excursion opportunities as it is a popular stop for Cruise Lines. However, if you plan to just use the water taxi and head into Philipsburg’s town, there is plenty to see and shop too.

When you are ready to head back, simply catch the water taxi back to the cruise port. At the cruise port, you will also find more shops and duty free shops so you don’t need to rush back on board.

There was also a local steel drum band playing at the pier. While waiting to board, you can stop at a cafe, local bar, and just hang out on the pier listening to the local bands playing.

Half Moon Cay, The Bahamas Shore Excursion is a great Experience!

Half Moon Cay, The Bahamas is a Private Island paradise shared by Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America.

Originally developed by Holland America, this is absolutely a beautiful island stop with white sand beaches, chairs to lounge, food and bars. It’s one of my top 5 beaches.

The Cruise Line had developed this port with a few shops, restrooms, some outdoor bars, and food, of course.

Typically, the cruise line sends the staff on the island and they set up a buffet and provide service on the beach. With Carnival, you use your Sail and Sign Card for all purchases. They also have a hut where you can rent flotation devices, snorkel gear, paddle boats, and small tubes for a small fee. There was also a small water park for kids with slides and fountains. Additional items are available through the shore excursion desk, such as para sailing, tours, and

From here, if you purchased an excursion, you will depart for the excursion. Or for those just walking off the ship, you can head over to the beach or bar areas.

Once ashore, the beach presents a large crescent shaped view with absolutely stunning white sand and still blue waters that overlook the ship anchored off the b each. The beach area had life guards and also contained a large, roped area for swimmers. In towards the roads, there was a walking path for nature lovers, the food pavilions, and even a chapel.

We walked out to 6′ feet of water and were able to see straight to the bottom. For those staying on the beach, there were plenty of lounge chairs to accommodate the cruise passengers who just wish to relax in the sun. An excursion option, you can rent a cabana that featured some shade for you own group.

These cabanas sold out fast, so if interested in a cabana, you will need to book that way ahead of time. The cabanas were a small 10×10 half shed sized platform with a sand shower on the deck, shaded area, and some had an A/C unit in the back.

There is plenty of food and walk-up bars are on-shore. Carnival set up a food buffet at their food pavilion. Overall, this excursion stop is a must stop for Cruise Travelers. It’s simply a paradise Island with all the amenties you find on board your ship! Feel free to post a comment on your experiences.

Labadee Haiti Resort is a privately leased port on the northern island of Haiti. This Royal Caribbean’s Shore Excursion is a private resort and a common stop for the fleet in the Caribbean. In the past, the ships would be tendered into the cove, however, with the larger Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas in the Caribbean rotation, Royal Caribbean International invested millions of dollars in this resort and put in a large port.

Just your Sail Pass and some Cash is needed!
….and your beach attire too!

The resort island is linked to the ship so your sail pass works just fine for charges. Other than your beach attire, water shoes, you just need your sail pass and some cash if you plan to shop at the local flea market held by local Haitians that are permitted into the resort to sell their items. You also need some small bills or petty cash for tips to the local Haitians who assist you at the beach area for tips. The ship’s crew brings everything over to the island. All food, water, ice and drinks are supplied by the cruise ship. If you have your own snorkel gear, you can bring that with your beach attire. You want to bring your beach towels from the ship and pack a bottle of the water from your stateroom. Don’t forget the sun screen.

Departing the Ship to the Resort

When you exit the ship and walk on the pier, you have a choice to walk to the right towards Columbus Cove and the Aqua Park, or take a water taxi to this area. The ship provides wheel chair access from the ship to the central area. There is also a tram car that take you from the central area down to the Columbus Cove beach area. However, if walking, you head straight off the pier, you come into the center area. To the left is a very nice beach area. You will see the end area of the Zip Line. The Artisan’s market. Rest Rooms, and the eating area. Towards the top of the hill you will see the Zip Line and the Dragon’s Tail Coaster ride. To pick a beach, a local worker will be there to greet you as you start heading towards the beach chairs. They will help you find a chair in the sun or shade, but do take cash tips. While they work for the resort, there are local Haitians that work in the resort for cash tips.

Both areas have bars, rest rooms, and the eating pavilion. In addition, the bar crew comes over to help serve your drinks just as if you were on the ship. The aqua park is on the Columbus Cove beach area and requires tickets and there is a stand to purchase the ticket. To the left of the Aqua Park, you have the private beach area called Columbus Cove. That area is a sand beach and you will not find too much coral in this area. It is a good spot to swim.
This resort has much to do if you wish to sign up for activities on the ship. There is a huge zip line that goes from the top all the way down to the landing near the ship. They also have kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, para-sailing, wave runners, and more. Labadee® Luc’s Splash Bash for the kids is available and there are floats and mats that you can just relax on in the water.

Labadee Haiti

Artisan Market – Flea Market

After departing the pier and walking in to the center area, to the right you will find the Artisan Flea Market. In this area are a select few merchants who sell a variety of locally made items. There are many merchants in this area and they sell similar items, so you will want to shop and bargain with them. There can be some sales pressure.

Of some of the nicer products the locals sell, the wood crafts are really exceptional. They have a variety of wood masks, carved boxes, and carved plates. A particular items that had much craftsmanship were the walking sticks and canes. They had exceptional carved walking sticks and canes for sale. The artisan’s market also had paintings and other small craft work for sale.

All in all, this is very nice port of call that Royal Caribbean International has put together. Be sure to check out the excursion activities on board the ship. However, if you just want to do your own thing and go to the beach area, that costs nothing, and you can enjoy the ship’s hospitality on the island with your sail pass.

Welcome to Magen’s Bay, St Thomas, USVI

If you are into Beaches in the Caribbean, one exciting visit you must try when in St Thomas, USVI is the excursion to Magen’s Bay. This is one of the most beautiful beaches you will find in the Caribbean. There is a small drive and parking and when the bus unloads, you will find a tree line for some shade, and then a wide beach area with white sand and crystal clear water. The picture (courtesy of Gruepig on WikiCommons) shows exactly what you will see looking out to the water way. There is swimming and snorkeling, and typically you may find some boats anchored out in the bay area as this is a popular stop for tourists. This is one stop you want to make because of beauty of the bay and beach areas. It is probably in the top 10, if not the top 5 in beaches for the Caribbean. This is definitely a breath taking view as you can see from the pic!

How to get there?
From the Cruise Terminal it is about a 45 min drive by Taxi. So, you would need to plan accordingly or book this excursion through the cruise line to be sure you make it back. Typically, the cruise lines have an excursion package to this destination. And the beach is wide but narrow from the tree line to the water. So, take advantage of the width if you are with a large cruise ship group if you would like some privacy. If the beach is crowded, use the width to spread out. As always bring a beach towel. There is a concession stand, chair rentals, and three bath houses. There is a small nominal fee to use the beach area. You can check the full details at this site: Click HERE for Magen’s Bay St Thomas USVI information.
