May 2012 - Executive Intelligent Blog

The research shows that people with higher emotional intelligence are more successful.
So why is it, then, that many folks continue to first look to fix others, as a means of building their success? On top of that, many more people talk about improving their emotional intelligence, yet repeatedly point to others as if they magically do not have to do anything to work on their skills.
This can be especially problematic for leaders. Why? Leaders set the stage and influence much of what happens around them. Not to mention, the only thing you ever have a semblance of control over is yourself. This is important to truly understand. The more you get this point, the sooner you will start seeing changes!

If you want greater success, may it be related to your performance, productivity, or your satisfaction, you have to work on YOU! And, why not start with emotional intelligence? Data shows that strong emotional intelligence skills is what separates star performers from others and it also accounts for a majority of the skills of effective managers!

Who doesn't want more emotional intelligence? After all, they are skills. We can learn them and stretch ourselves with practice. That is the place to start! Through improving our own skills, we are setting the stage for responsible, effective behaviors from the people we lead. We are demonstrating through example and building trust and our credibility! All of these, in turn, can increase our influence (often times what leaders really want)!

3 Steps for Building Your Emotional Intelligence

Make a decision and commitment to strengthening your emotional intelligence! Did you ever hear of someone who wasn't great at playing basketball becoming good without practice? Of course not! So, you will have to make a decision that this is something you want to do and then make it a priority to improve. Things won't change or improve if you don't keep at them. Good habits, as well as the other kind, take time to develop!

Start with your awareness! Notice when you have different feelings, especially the subtle ones, and figure out what specifically are creating those feelings. Also, it is important to know how others experience you. So, get their pulse - notice others' responses to you and even ask them to tell you how they perceive you. You will not change anything, if you are not first aware that it needs changing!

Create a plan for yourself that includes getting more information and specific actions for real time practice! What skills do you want to focus on first? How will you learn more about those skills and build your knowledge? What new behaviors will you practice, how regularly, and when will you evaluate your progress? Keep in mind that our ways of acting do not occur in a vacuum and they do not change overnight. Your plan will outline where you want to go and how you will get there!

Happy Skill Building,

January is almost over and the discussion of goals for the year and this first quarter are still on the forefront of minds. How will you ensure that your goals will take you where you want to go, and how will you make sure that you achieve them? Here are five steps to help you do, just that! And, after reading the blog, if you want to take your goal setting to the next level or simply don't want to worry about implementing the steps, our Coach-in-a-Box Goal Setting digital package will take you through everything you need to know AND provide you with a system for accountability - all for less than the cost of a movie and popcorn!

1. Up-to-date Values

     Demands in the
workplace are constantly changing; our family’s needs and children's activities are in flux. When you look closely at your goals, do they actually reflect your current values?
I always conduct a values activity with my clients to identify what are
their current, strongest values. Values
are a funny thing when we’re talking about goals. Believe it or not, they change at different
times and phases of our life. And, if our
goals aren’t reflecting the values that are most important to us at a given
time, we’re likely not to achieve
them!

2. Aspired Future

     Have you ever
heard a friend or colleague say, “My goal this year is to make twice what I
made last year.”? Well, that’s terrific
if they’re willing to work possibly twice as many hours, drastically change
their work habits or, land a big client that is going to generate a revenue
windfall. While this can happen, what is not revealed
is that for the goal to be achieved, it must clearly move us toward our vision of the future. And, if you want to
spend more time with your family or actively participate in your hobbies this
year, you also need a goal to reflect that.
Think about all the parts that are present in your desired future and create your goal(s) so that it helps you close the gap between here and there.

3. Growth to Achieve

     People don’t
usually talk about all the hard work that actually goes into achieving their
goals. But, we know that when we achieve
a goal that we’ve set, we worked diligently and pushed ourselves to get
there! One of my teachers, Dr.
Jeffrey Auerbach, Ph.D., articulated the “balance of challenge and support”
necessary for development. I use this
very successfully with my clients, toward the achievement of their goals. We have to push ourselves to get out of our
comfort zone and get motivated, to make the necessary changes. We also need to bolster ourselves along the
way, to feel the satisfaction and encouragement of our efforts.

4. Effective Strategies

     How do you know
if the practices or procedures you implemented are in fact moving you closer to
the achievement of your goal? Have you
ever wondered, “How close am I, exactly, to achieving my goal?” Monitoring our progress and evaluating the
effectiveness of our strategies are critical steps. Sure, sometimes we get lucky and are
intuitively so in sync with our goal that we meet it without this; but, the
rest of the time we need to do everything in our power by noticing at what
times and during what activities do we get greater movement toward our goal. Then, we set strategic dates to review our practices and procedures to determine
if they are really the best fit for us to achieve our target. The objective is to catch potential problems during Step 4, modify the strategies where needed, and achieve the goal by the date you have set.

5. Hitting the Target

     The time of the
goal has arrived! You’ve accomplished it
and will reap the benefits that this success yields. Take the time to reflect and celebrate this
achievement! You’ve worked hard, learned
things along the way and, have strengthened your skills and confidence. Make sure you allow yourself thoughtful
contemplation of these assets so that the progress is not in vain and it supports
you for future growth. It may sound
cliché to celebrate or reward yourself for your achievement but, remember the
line in The Shining, “All work and no
play makes Jack a dull boy.”... What if,
however, you didn’t achieve the goal?
Now, is the opportunity for even greater learning. Thoroughly study your actions and strategies
and figure out what went wrong. Go back
to the drawing board and devise a new plan with new tactics, so that you can achieve your goal!

Happy Goal Setting!

Don't Forget the Structure!

So often when I am working with people in groups, I am quickly bombarded with information and requests flying from a variety of directions. This occurs in organizations and groups when they lack a clear process for problem-solving, information flow, decision-making, and communication. It happens when the communication loop is unclosed and causes groups to often repeat steps thereby undermining productivity and wearing on the patience and memories of busy professionals. How many times does this happen to you?

I'm not suggesting that structures and processes be imposed on a group ....
January - New Year's Leadership Resolution: Manage Less

Imagine the day when you don't have to spend so much of your time managing your staff - tracking your people down, scheduling meetings and conferences all to check how they're progressing on a project, how they are handling a client, or completing an accountability requirement.

Whether you work as a team of executives running a mid-sized company, a team of professionals serving on a board, or a team of managers in a start-up company, the way, the how, and the what of your teamwork creates an indelible impact on the culture and the organization you're leading. The team's impact is exponentially stronger than the sum of the individual leaders. And, if you would like to be on a high-performing team, the symbiotic effect of a positive, collaborative leadership team is the way to get there!
August - The Limits to Your Success

When you think about the things that may be holding you back, don't forget to take a personal inventory. Chances are, the reasons you may not have what you want, are your own doing. I can't tell you how often clients have a goal or something they want to accomplish, yet when exploring opportunities of new actions, they come up with a list of good reasons not to try the options. These "good reasons" are often based on beliefs or thoughts that they have, pertaining to the options at hand.

Passion is a very useful energy source that often gets overlooked in the workplace. It literally acts like a fuel to your engine. But, to use this fuel, you first have to know what it is. Then, you have to tap into it.

It amazes me how often we are faced with interactions where another person, for all intents and purposes, does not want to listen to what we have to say. Maybe, if we think about it, we too, often do not want to listen to what another person has to say. As you are reading this, your mind may jump to a recent discussion with a family member.... These days, it is a sign poor leadership, and well, just bad behavior, to run over, slash and de-humanize people as you're racing to scoop up millions for the company or climb the organizational ladder. That leader...
This has a huge impact on our workplace environment and our personal lives! So how do we maintain our morale and a positive attitude when the stressful transition we found ourselves in seems to be sticking around?

Whether it's at the office, in little ways throughout your day or at home, soul-searching the best next step for your career, practice these fundamental morale boosters to put a smile on your face and create a positive ripple for your environment:

find joy in the little things

Should this be something to worry about? Well, have you heard of employee rant websites?

I don't want to strike fear in the hearts of my employers reading this. Instead, I take the position that this could very well be a golden opportunity. As an employer, you can even set up a site yourself, where employees can anonymously rant! If the culture of the company is something that you're wanting to improve, this could be the vehicle to shift that momentum.

I was interviewed on this very topic a couple weeks ago. Apparently, the new rage is disgruntled employees going to websites to rant about their grievances against you and the company. In a quick search, you may easily find the NYPD rant website, Dell, and a waiter industry rant website. Some of the ranters, I'm sure, are still employed, while others may have left in a cloud of fumes or amidst controversy. The silver lining that these sites provide - a wealth of information that the employer probably didn't have!

For more information on this, check out Nancy's interview and a discussion of "rants" in the Austin American Statesman, Life and Arts section 12/16/08.

If you are an employer and would like to share your thoughts on this topic, please comment. Or, if you'd like some support to improve the culture of your company through executive coaching, team building, designing effective leadership, or creating emotional intelligence at work, contact us to schedule an interview to discuss how we can help you accomplish that and save money!

Wishing you Happy and Safe Holiday!
<br
