We each have strengths and weakness that we demonstrate in the various areas of our lives. Take leadership, for example. Do you know what your strengths are as a leader and how they help your efforts? Many leaders know one or a few of their strengths. For example, I bet you can identify things like: "I am good at getting people to listen." "People do what I say." "People always come to me for help." "I make decisions quickly." "I explain to people all the reasons and logic for their work."

All of the examples reflect useful attributes for leaders, under particular circumstances. And, those attributes can also be a detriment at times. If you think your strengths can't have a downside and you don't use them with discretion, you may find that your strengths are also your weaknesses. When they are relied on too heavily, our positive qualities can dominate our leadership repertoire and not leave room for other important leader attributes. In the previous examples, could team members' perspectives generate the following concerns: "How approachable do they consider you?" "Do they know what your vision is and do they support it?" "Do they feel empowered to do their work and take responsibility for it?" "How often do you consider information from others, additional possibilities and facts?" "How often do you listen to people and allow them to contribute?" These questions also reflect valuable practices of leaders.

Unfortunately, it seems that our strengths in leadership serve us in ways that do not serve us at other times. Do you know which is which? Regularly, it can be difficult to discern. You see, not only can our attributes, our individual propensities for thinking, feeling, and behaving, work for us, they can also work against us. Gallup's research reveals, in "Now, Discover Your Strengths", light shining onto this issue. They note that people tend toward using their talents too often, at the wrong time, and too strongly, rendering what was a strength into a flaw. Take the example of a woman who is skillful at asserting her position. There is a point in situations when asserting one's position no longer is useful. In time, if she does not stop her assertion and look for openings to bring the interaction around via compromise or negotiation, her talent at assertion is being overused and is now working against skillful problem-solving and desirable resolution.

Ultimately, all of us are better at some things, than we are at other things. It is very useful to know where our individual talents lie. But, then what? The next step is to for us to exercise strengths with precision and finesse, not using them at the wrong time or letting them build up too much momentum.

Happy Strengths Finessing!

ExecIntel Solutions

For more specifics on setting and achieving goals, here is a workbook that will take you through it, step by step. Are you excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and do you have big hopes about what you can achieve? Great!! Desire for the future, check, step one. Now, you're ready to make them happen. But, how do you make sure that you will will actually get there?

Prepare to Achieve
Goals are great to have! They energize us and motivate us to strive to grow, which is so important because change is not always easy. As humans, we tend to prefer the comfort of knowing where we are, who we are, and what is coming next. There are, however, a couple of considerations we can highlight to keep us on track while we are stepping up to achieve them.
First, gain an understanding of the changes that will need to be made to achieve the goal. What are the things that you will need to do? When can you do them? Do you have what you need to be able to do them? It is easy to gloss over this step. You know there will have to be some changes. But, ponder this, if the actions needed to achieve the goal were so easy, wouldn't you have done them before now... Change is needed to achieve goals! Get clear about the changes that are needed.
Then, make achieving this goal a priority. Remind yourself what you are working toward and why this goal is important to you. While this step may sound redundant, there is a lot of competition for your time and attention. Adding a new priority or new actions to an already very busy life will often require thoughtful planning and concerted focus, until you get into a new flow. The goal has to be a priority! Make sure that you focus on the goal and treat it like a priority.

Prepare to achieve, check, step two. You are set to go forward and conquer your goals with clarity, energy, and focus!

Success with Goals,
ExecIntel Solutions Team

For more specifics on setting and achieving goals, here is a workbook that will take you through it, step by step. This may sound like a no-brainer, but I challenge you say aloud what is expected of each of your team members on a given project. If they actually understand completely what is expected of them, great; you have the first requirement. If, however, you test with this question and they do not fully understand, then you know you need to provide clarification. Keep in mind that understanding is specific to each individual and is likely to be somewhat different from one team member to the next. And, remember that this is necessary to be genuinely engaged in work!

Second, we need to have access to the materials and resources that are needed to do our work. Do your team members have everything they need to succeed or do their job well? If not, this is a good conversation to have with your manager. As much as work gets pushed down the ladder, it is a sign of good leadership to work to get the resources and materials that you team needs. It is in everyone's best interest that employees are engaged!

Furthermore, there are three important ingredients for engagement that leaders can offer. They facilitate this by creating processes and supporting employees to have ownership in the work they do. Have you ever thought back on a inspiring talk you heard and wished you could be more influential in a particular area of your life? At the core, what comes across as inspiration is communicated through emotional passion. You see, people are inspired when they connect with the emotions that are conveyed and emotionally agree with the message. The emotional part of their brain is triggered and their response is, "Yes!" Their mind is in gear and they are ready to take action. That's when people are inspired! And, the best part, they are engaged and posed to act.

To strengthen your skills for inspiring, here are four powerful, yet simple, things you can do today.

1. Identify the reason and gain clarity about why you want to inspire others.
2. Listen deeply to others.
3. Express why you are communicating your message.
4. Share an example or experience that evokes hope and encouragement.

Inspiration is a potent human phenomena. Seek to inspire others to do better and you will do better yourself!

With Inspiration,
ExecIntel Solutions Team

Visit us on Amazon and Google Play to find our powerful products on goal achievement, organization culture, and leadership development or simply go to our website www.ExecIntelSolutions.com to find tools and contact information for help to reach the next level of success.

Check out our upcoming personal classes in Austin beginning July 1st!
Time Management

Developing Leadership Presence

Nancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-47858519788765555742013-11-26T13:55:00.000-06:002013-11-26T13:55:22.329-06:00Set Your Goals and Achieve Your Desires
 November 2013 Executive Intelligent Blog

Don't make the mistakes of years past. Set yourself up to achieve your goals this next year!!
Often times we set our goals, thinking about what we want but, we do not think about the conflicts those wants may present in our lives. Think through whether there are aspects of your life or environment that do not support or that possibly contradict what you are trying to achieve? If so, it is unlikely that you will achieve your goal! This understanding should not be overlooked, despite it being a seemingly simple concept. It is noteworthy because people have an uncanny ability to gloss over details and subtleties that do not fit the image of what they want.

Before you create your goals, consider all the things that are most important to you. Do they support one another or can they co-exist? A common example lies in a goal to "achieve more," which requires taking on more responsibility. This type of goal can create problems for people if they are also trying to have more balance in their life or spend more time with loved ones. Neither desire is better or wrong. They will likely, however, compete for your time resource.

Preparing to create our goals can definitely help us achieve them! So, before you set your goals, here are some steps to ensure you get where you want to go.

1) Get clear about where you are heading and why.
2) Identify all the things that are most important to you.
3) Set appropriate goals that do not conflict with other aspects of your life.
4) Stay focused, work diligently to achieve your desires, and bolster yourself as needed along the way.

If you are one that likes more information or would like personal support to set and achieve your goals, take a look at our downloadable Coach-in-a-Box or contact us to learn how our coaching services will help you achieve the outcomes that are most important to you.

Wishing you and yours

Happy Thanksgiving!!

ExecIntel Solutions Team

Nancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-53834502540492375702013-10-29T12:04:00.001-05:002013-10-29T14:04:44.666-05:00Steps to Portray the Leader in You

October 2013 Executive Intelligent Blog

Do you ever wonder how some people seem to naturally be leaders while others struggle to convey any authority? Conviction and passion are two important features that will boost the impact of your message. Regardless of your personality and style, you too can present yourself more naturally and effectively as a leader. To begin with, exercise how you express your passion and your conviction..

In addition, while in conversation, successful leaders portray that they are interested in the discussion and the people around them. They listen closely and convey genuine interest through eye contact, facial, and body gestures. They are real, everyday people, not larger-than-life, overly focused on themselves, or pompous. Still, they have developed their voice and their presence.

Here are 5 steps that everyone can do to present themselves as a leader.

Identify what you are passionate about.

Relax and become comfortable with your passions.

Give interactions your undivided attention.

Express yourself and listen deeply.

Focus on the mission or cause of your passions, not yourself.

If you would like to cultivate your voice and your presence, look into our forthcoming informal class Finding the Leader in You: Develop Your Presence and Voice to participate in a hands on mini-course and develop your leadership presence.

Wishing you a happy and influential Fall!

ExecIntel Solutions Team
Nancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-13822907931984410012013-09-13T11:18:00.000-05:002013-09-13T11:20:37.274-05:00Make the Most of Your Time
Do you ever think that your time is leaking away? You should! It is the engine that drives the people in an organization! A couple years ago I noted that, "Collaborative culture is where the people of an organization are working in flow, toward a common outcome!" Focusing on building a collaborative culture will positively impact your workplace, including your bottom line! For years the research in schools has shown that collaborative cultures generate substantial improvements in achievement and performance, as opposed to traditional cultures. More recently, technology companies are incorporating aspects of collaborative culture because it is so conducive to the creativity and innovation that is desired in these companies. Even global and government organizations are reaping higher margins from this collaborative focus.

What is so special about the collaborative culture? They enable people to meet their primary human needs, which include feeling a sense of control, meaning in a situation, and positive support (Peters and Waterman, In Search of Excellence, 1982). Furthermore, environments that fulfill these needs have people that are engaged! The satisfaction and productivity generated in this harmonious environment yield greater sales, revenue growth, efficiency, and profitability.

To build a collaborative culture in your company, look at your values, goals, practices, and peoples' attitudes. Then, incorporate a shared sense of purpose and interdependence in your business initiatives and groups, specifically regarding the following known influential factors:
- flexibility
- responsibility
- standards
- rewards
- clarity
- commitment

Happy Culture Building!
ExecIntel Solutions, LLC TeamNancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-38969817248378223282013-06-06T13:10:00.002-05:002013-06-06T13:12:20.054-05:00Sure Fire Tips to Help You Do More With Your Time
June 2013 Executive Intelligent Blog
Do you ever think that your time is leaking away? Whether our goals are linked to doing something better, doing something different, or doing something new, when we focus our approach with optimism not only are we improving our emotional intelligence and leadership skills, but we are keeping ourselves motivated and simultaneously positively contributing to the culture.

Optimism reflects our attitude and facilitates our problem-solving and decision-making. Think opposite of pessimism. It's focus is on seeing the good in things and looking toward possibilities. The result is such a powerful force in our lives because it impacts us, what we do, and the people around us! Plus, the research purporting the benefits of optimism is piling up. When we are optimistic, people want to be around us. Our enthusiasm is contagious and brings about good things. Being optimistic can also improve our health. Studies show that it can reduce the risk of breast cancer in women and the risk of heart attacks in men.

Three things you can do to strengthen your optimism muscle and spread goodness:

Choose a positive attitude! - Your attitude, your choice.
Focus on solutions! - Think about possibilities and you will have new ideas.
Look for the good in things! - Notice what you are grateful for and say it.

For goals to be achieved, we first have to see them in our mind. So it makes sense to focus our thoughts toward positive ends, as they will lead to and create the outcomes we seek.

Have a great week!
Executive Intelligent Coaching TeamNancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-34724265000175187082013-04-23T18:14:00.000-05:002013-04-23T18:14:17.843-05:00Reach the Outcomes Most Important to Your Success with Executive Coaching

A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.
 - Jackie Robinson

Are you ready to improve your impact? This Earth Day, do your part and support the lives you touch as you model, share, challenge, and support. Did you feel initially relaxed or did you stiffen up and stand taller? As you looked around, what did you notice about the people working? How did they interact with you and direct you toward your destination? All of these questions reflect the culture of a workplace.

Workplace culture is so powerful, whether your mind is paying attention to it or not, your body notices it. That is because the culture reflects the attitudes, actions, values, and goals of an organization. These are not things to be taken lightly. Workplace culture has an overwhelming effect on the people of the organization and the people generate your results and financial outcomes.

Here are three things you can do to put a fresh coat of paint on your culture.
1) Seek input from staff on a new project or initiative.
2) Communicate the larger impact and value of a situation.
3) Give positive support to each member of your team.

Happy Springtime!
Executive Intelligent Coaching TeamNancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-35685626319452590342012-12-14T17:11:00.000-06:002012-12-17T10:07:28.431-06:00Goal Setting with Coach-In-A-Box

Happy Holiday!!!!
No matter how festive the days have become, I bet many of you are thinking about what you still want to accomplish over the next 1-2 weeks AND are also thinking about what you want to achieve next year.

Do yourself a favor and give yourself the gift of Coach-in-a-Box! On top of that, many more people talk about improving their emotional intelligence, yet repeatedly point to others as if they magically do not have to do anything to work on their skills.
This can be especially problematic for leaders. Why? Leaders set the stage and influence much of what happens around them. Not to mention, the only thing you ever have a semblance of control over is yourself. This is important to truly understand. The more you get this point, the sooner you will start seeing changes!

If you want greater success, may it be related to your performance, productivity, or your satisfaction, you have to work on YOU! And, why not start with emotional intelligence? Data shows that strong emotional intelligence skills is what separates star performers from others and it also accounts for a majority of the skills of effective managers!

Who doesn't want more emotional intelligence? After all, they are skills. We can learn them and stretch ourselves with practice. That is the place to start! Through improving our own skills, we are setting the stage for responsible, effective behaviors from the people we lead. We are demonstrating through example and building trust and our credibility! All of these, in turn, can increase our influence (often times what leaders really want)!

3 Steps for Building Your Emotional Intelligence
Make a decision and commitment to strengthening your emotional intelligence! Did you ever hear of someone who wasn't great at playing basketball becoming good without practice? Of course not! So, you will have to make a decision that this is something you want to do and then make it a priority to improve. Things won't change or improve if you don't keep at them. Good habits, as well as the other kind, take time to develop!

Start with your awareness! Notice when you have different feelings, especially the subtle ones, and figure out what specifically are creating those feelings. Also, it is important to know how others experience you. So, get their pulse - notice others' responses to you and even ask them to tell you how they perceive you. You will not change anything, if you are not first aware that it needs changing!

Create a plan for yourself that includes getting more information and specific actions for real time practice! What skills do you want to focus on first? And, after reading the blog, if you want to take your goal setting to the next level or simply don't want to worry about implementing the steps, our Coach-in-a-Box Goal Setting digital package will take you through everything you need to know AND provide you with a system for accountability - all for less than the cost of a movie and popcorn!

1. Up-to-date Values

Demands in the workplace are constantly changing; our family’s needs and children's activities are in flux. When you look closely at your goals, do they actually reflect your current values? I always conduct a values activity with my clients to identify what are their current, strongest values. Values are a funny thing when we’re talking about goals. Believe it or not, they change at different times and phases of our life. And, if our goals aren’t reflecting the values that are most important to us at a given time, we’re likely not to achieve them!

2. Aspired Future

Have you ever heard a friend or colleague say, “My goal this year is to make twice what I made last year.”? Well, that’s terrific if they’re willing to work possibly twice as many hours, drastically change their work habits or, land a big client that is going to generate a revenue windfall. While this can happen, what is not revealed is that for the goal to be achieved, it must clearly move us toward our vision of the future. And, if you want to spend more time with your family or actively participate in your hobbies this year, you also need a goal to reflect that. Think about all the parts that are present in your desired future and create your goal(s) so that it helps you close the gap between here and there.

3. Growth to Achieve

People don’t usually talk about all the hard work that actually goes into achieving their goals. But, we know that when we achieve a goal that we’ve set, we worked diligently and pushed ourselves to get there! One of my teachers, Dr. Jeffrey Auerbach, Ph.D., articulated the “balance of challenge and support” necessary for development. I use this very successfully with my clients, toward the achievement of their goals. We have to push ourselves to get out of our comfort zone and get motivated, to make the necessary changes. We also need to bolster ourselves along the way, to feel the satisfaction and encouragement of our efforts.

4. Effective Strategies

How do you know if the practices or procedures you implemented are in fact moving you closer to the achievement of your goal? Have you ever wondered, “How close am I, exactly, to achieving my goal?” Monitoring our progress and evaluating the effectiveness of our strategies are critical steps. Sure, sometimes we get lucky and are intuitively so in sync with our goal that we meet it without this; but, the rest of the time we need to do everything in our power by noticing at what times and during what activities do we get greater movement toward our goal. Then, we set strategic dates to review our practices and procedures to determine if they are really the best fit for us to achieve our target. The objective is to catch potential problems during Step 4, modify the strategies where needed, and achieve the goal by the date you have set.

5. Hitting the Target

The time of the goal has arrived! You’ve accomplished it and will reap the benefits that this success yields. Take the time to reflect and celebrate this achievement! You’ve worked hard, learned things along the way and, have strengthened your skills and confidence. Make sure you allow yourself thoughtful contemplation of these assets so that the progress is not in vain and it supports you for future growth. It may sound cliché to celebrate or reward yourself for your achievement but, remember the line in The Shining, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”... What if, however, you didn’t achieve the goal? Now, is the opportunity for even greater learning. Thoroughly study your actions and strategies and figure out what went wrong. Go back to the drawing board and devise a new plan with new tactics, so that you can achieve your goal!

Happy Goal Setting!

Executive Intelligent Coaching Team

Nancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-45463345979048096422012-01-20T15:36:00.000-06:002012-01-20T15:36:14.126-06:00Coaching Skills for LeadersClick to read the article.Nancy Schillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15005639625694087542noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30928334.post-81135112022382401562011-12-28T11:18:00.000-06:002011-12-28T11:18:55.029-06:00What will you accomplish in 2012?Do you know how you are going to accomplish the goals you have for your life and work in the upcoming year?
