Intended Outcomes:

Teachers and Governors will have been introduced to Diocesan support material, ‘Love and Sex Matters’, including units of work for Year 6 and Year 7:

Key Stage 1: The Key Stage 1 materials aim to provide teachers with the tools to help children aged four to seven to begin to think about themselves and their bodies, their relationships with family, and friendships, providing a firm foundation for later relationships and sex education. The materials are very suitable for use in church schools, but also in other schools, and even other settings, such as church groups. All materials uphold the sanctity of marriage, the importance of long-term relationships and stable family life, and are underpinned by the central belief in the intrinsic worth of all people as loved and created by God.
The seven lessons each comprise a selection of activities arranged in four parts: Gathering, Engaging, Responding, Sending. The variety of activities allows teachers to select those activities most appropriate to their pupils, creating a lesson that fits just an hour or two, or a series of sessions worked on over a week or longer. Appendices provide further resources on incorporating values into school life, creating a sex education policy for a school and working with parents on relationships and sex education. These resources contain all the necessary worksheets and a CD with printable versions of all the worksheets.

Key Sage 2/3 resources are lso available and can be covered if there is sufficient interest from those attending:

Key Stage 2: The sessions for Key Stage 2 are structured in imitation of how relationships develop: starting with the individual, followed by wider community, then dating, marriage etc. The aim of this is to put sex within the context of marriage and to help pupils understand how relationships develop and work.

Key Stage 3: The material for Key Stage 3 is more directly related to sex throughout, focusing on how society and our communities form our attitudes about sex and influence sexual activity.

Happy New Year – 2012!

Consultation meetings for headteachers and chairs of governors February 2012

Colleagues,

The national and local context for schools is changing very rapidly at the moment and the Diocese is
determined to make sure that church schools receive the support that they require. We are aware that this means changing the way that we have operated in the past and so we are working on a school improvement strategy and reviewing what should be in our core offer to all schools.

It is essential that we do this in partnership with schools and I recently sent an invitation to all heads and chairs of governors to one of a series of meetings to be held in early February, the details are given below.

This meeting if free and essential in making sure that the Diocese supports church schools effectively
in the future. Please make every effort to come and give us your views. If you cannot make the one specifically in your area you are welcome to come to one of the others.

We have already received a number of replies but if you haven’t done it yet please e-mail ccyp@exeter.anglican.org to indicate which meeting you can attend.

I look forward to seeing you.

Philip Mantell

The service will celebrate the rich diversity of schools, children’s and youth work across our Diocese. Church of England schools staff (and support staff), governors, pupils, parents, youth and children’s workers are coming together in the Cathedral Church of St Peter, the Saturday
before Education Sunday, for an act of worship led by the Bishop of Plymouth.

Following the success of last year’s banner service, each school is invited to bring along their banners depicting their church school. Children will be processing these banners in the Cathedral as part of the Service.

The service will begin at 3pm, with light refreshments afterwards in the Chapter House.

This is the version of “Blessing and Honour” the Band will be playing at the service
Blessing and honor

attached booking form with the name of your school, the numbers expected to attend and whether you will be staying on for refreshments in the Chapter House (4.30 – 5.30 pm). Cathedral_Service_04.02.12_Booking_Form

Secondary Schools
The world famous Taizé Community is inviting UK schools to participate in one of two special weeks in July 2012 when school and college groups including Year 10 – Year 13 students are especially invited to participate in the life of the community, with its daily rhythm of prayer, study and sharing.

Taizé is an international and ecumenical monastic community founded in 1940 and located in Burgundy in south eastern France. In the 1960s the Community began to welcome young adults for international meetings every week. Nowadays about 80,000 young people from all over the world participate in these weekly meetings every year.

In preparation for these School Weeks, two volunteers from Taizé spent three weeks in November visiting UK schools interested in joining the Taizé Experience. Their visits were very well received by the participating schools.

There is information about the Taize School Weeks at: www.taize.fr/schools including information for teachers and group leaders. Demand for the school visits has been so great that a further pair of long-term volunteers from Taize will be visiting UK schools from 26th February to 17th March 2012. To request a school visit, contact UK Co-ordinator Jane Shields jane@laloge.co.uk or 01924 377921.

She was recognised in her professional life as a compassionate but determined leader; she led by example, and inspired others by her dedication and commitment. She was
always happiest working in a team.

She was a very special Headteacher and we thank God for all whose lives have been enriched by her special contribution and service. We are fortunate that many of us as colleagues, staff and children have such wonderful memories of Sally; she was highly respected and greatly loved.
