Chinese fan Palm, Fountain Palm

A much-loved fan palm that has been popular since Victorian times and
makes a superb potted palm for the home or terrace. In warmer climates
and over a period of years, it grows into a handsome, medium-sized tree
with a slender trunk. The common name is something of a misnomer since
it is actually native to Japan's Ryukyu Islands and Volcano Islands. The
broad, lime green leaves have elegantly drooping and curled tips, which
gives rise to its other name, "Fountain palm." The fruits, which
are produced in large numbers, are blue. Livistona chinensis shows a good
tolerance to cold and frost and may be used in the sheltered temperate
garden, but will also happily accept hot and humid tropical conditions.

Mitchell Plateau Fan Palm

A
medium-sized, slender fan palm native only to the Mitchell Plateau in
the Kimberley Ranges in northern Western Australia, where it grows in
open, seasonally dry Eucalypt forest, occasionally in very dense stands.
It forms a very slender, solitary trunk which with age can reach 20 m
tall and supports a small, open crown of stiff leaves on long stalks. It
is particularly well adapted to fire, which is a rather frequent
occurrence in its habitat and helps the palm to compete with Eucalyptus
and other trees. It is rarely seen in cultivation, perhaps on account of
its slow growth, but would make a nice, robust and drought tolerant
ornamental for the small, tropical garden.

The fruits are rather large and bright red, the single seed is heavily sculpted and very easy to recognize. Alsmithia is very rare in cultivation as well as in its wild habitat on the Fijian Islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu, where only a few hundred individuals persist, growing on steep slopes in extremely wet, dense rainforest to about 500 m (1600 ft.) a.s.l. Originally described by legendary palm botanist Hal Moore as Alsmithia longipes, it has recently been transferred to the genus Heterospathe, a questionable move, despite some DNA data in support. In cultivation, Alsmithia does best in a sheltered spot in the tropics.

Alloschmidia glabrata

A very rare palm that grows in the north of New Caledonia between sea level and 1200 m (3900 ft.) in wet forest.

How to do justice to this magnificent palm in just a few words? The Bismarck Palm has a full crown of large, silvery-blue, circular, fan-shaped leaves and a tall, columnar trunk. In seedlings and young plants, the leaves are tinged with an unreal purple-red color. Bismarckia develops fairly quickly into a large and stunning tree that is excellently suited for the subtropical or tropical garden, for parks, and for breathtaking avenues. It is tolerant of drought and a few degrees of frost and wants a place in full sun, such as it enjoys in the highland savannas of its native home of Madagascar.

Soaking the seeds seem to speed up the germinating process.Place the seeds in a galoon pot in a shady spot. With regular waterings and kept moist, the seeds should germinate in no time. The Bismarck seeds are average to germinate, but once they germinate you have to pay close attention to them... The first root that emerges from the seeds grows very large. Germinating in a deep pot would be the best way to germinate the Bismarck seeds without disturbing the root system once it starts to grow.

Rare Fishtail Palm Trees

Exquisite Collection Of The Most Rarest Fishtail Palm Tree

A home with a beautiful, healthy-looking yard sells faster and for more. If you’re thinking of adding palm trees to your home, here are a few tips to keep in mind that should help you get the most out of your landscaping project.

The spring and summer months are the ideal time to start your palm tree landscaping project. Palm trees need warm weather and a lot of sun when they’re growing. If you already live in a tropical climate, you can start planting them at any time.

Do the Research

You don’t want to go into this project without knowing a little bit about the palm trees your thinking of getting. Look into the different types of palms and pay close attention to how wide and how tall each kind grows. You don’t want to end up with ones that are too big for your yard, or ones that have roots systems that could damage your foundation or other elements of the yard.

Don’t make the common mistake of planting a palm tree too close to your house. Palm trees, when young, can look small and harmless, but they grow very quickly into giant tropical beasts that, if improperly placed, can take over your roof and damage your walls and windows.

Don’t Overcrowd

Three palm trees or less is usually a good rule of thumb. You shouldn’t just start putting palms in every available section of your yard. Palm trees should work to frame the design of your yard and add a powerful tropical element to the landscaping, but they should not overcrowd your yard. Place your palms in different areas and arrange them organically, in a way that is visually appealing, rather than in evenly-spaced clusters or rows. Surrounding them with other plants and colorful elements is a great way to make your palms look even better.

Important tips to consider before planting your palm

In general, four factors should be considered when choosing a palm tree for your property. The first factor is the size of the tree at maturity. Remember that that little palm for sale at a local nursery might reach a height of 50 feet or more as an adult tree overpowering the rest of your property, interfering with overhead lines and underground conduits and perhaps, threatening buildings if the tree is planted too nearby. Make sure that the size of your palm at maturity is in keeping with your needs and overall landscape design.

The second factor is temperature . Most types of palm tree will not tolerate freezing weather and even a short bout of frost may weaken a tree and leave it vulnerable to insects and disease. In some, for example, the climate is simply too severe for successful palm growth. Check with your local nursery or tree expert for advice if you're unsure about growing conditions in your area.

The fourth factor is sunlight . Not all varieties of palm tree are equally sun tolerant. Some varieties, in fact, prefer shady conditions to full exposure. Keep this in mind when thinking of the kind of palm tree that would be best for you.

The final factor is water . While palm trees have long been associated with desert conditions, in the wild, they are only found near abundant and continuous supplies of water. If you are thinking about planting a palm tree on your property, make sure that the tree will receive adequate water and be prepared to water a newly transplanted tree frequently while it acclimatizes.

Tips about planting your palm

Planting palm trees is similar, in most ways, to planting other kinds of trees. Nursery-grown palms are generally sold either potted or balled and burlapped. Try to plant your tree shortly after purchase. If there is going to be any time lag between purchase and planting, make sure that the tree's root ball is kept moist but not soaking. When transporting and handling palm trees, use care. The bark is easily damaged and damaged areas leave the tree vulnerable to insects and fungus. The best time of year to plant is during the warmer months when the soil temperature is at least 65 degrees F.

Dig a hole wide enough to fit the root ball with plenty of room to spare. Twice as wide might be a good rule of thumb in many cases. The hole should be just deep enough so that the tree is planted at the depth at which it was grown. Do not plant the tree any deeper as this may deprive the roots of nutrients and water. When the tree has been situated in the hole, backfill with the freshly dug soil.

When the palm tree has been planted, build a soil barrier around the circumference of the hole to form a dam that will hold water. Then lay down a layer of organic mulch around the tree. About three inches deep should do.
Frequent watering is crucial for newly-planted palm trees. Daily for about the first two weeks and then tapering off over several months as the tree establishes itself. Use a bubbler or arrange a hose to slow soak the area around the tree. It is important not to allow the soil to dry out as this will severely weaken your new palm
