Recipe for healthy dog food

You are a dog owner who loves their pet dog unconditionally, so much so, you would take a bullet for the dog? This is great to hear because there are too many people who believe they love their dog more than life itself, but yet contradict themselves by choosing to ignore the importance of their dog's diet. Anyone loving a dog more than life would make sure healthy foods was implemented into their diet. We need to know a different delicious recipe for healthy dog food.

Not all dog owners are fully educated on the best dog foods and therefore doing more harm than good at feed time and this is sad because most of these people don't do this intentionally.

Good & Bad Dog Food Tips

Don't give your dog table scraps. In today's kitchens a lot goes on with spices and herbs for cooking meals and this isn't good for a dog's indigestion, as is the same for some humans too. No matter how sad that puppy dog eyes look watching you eat at the table don't be tempted to give in and give them food, it could prove costly to the dog's health and your pocket with vet fees.

Good Food

When it comes to giving your dog a treat, and you have run out of dog biscuits, try giving a tablespoon of unsalted peanut butter. Avoid the type containing xylitol. Peanut butter consists of healthy fats and protein.

Let your dog sample a taste of yogurt and if he or she likes it happy days because it's high in protein and calcium. Avoid yogurt types containing sugar or artificial sweeteners. Choose plain yogurt over flavored to help your dog if they have digestion problems.

Dogs with specific bowel problems can benefit greatly from oatmeal without added sugar, as it's full of fiber. Supposedly it's good for dogs with wheat allergies.

Chicken is a good source of protein.

A dog's health will better and his coat gets shinier by eating salmon content of omega-3 fatty acids.

Broccoli is vitamin-rich. It's a great nutrition boost for dogs. Although a popular healthy green vegetable, it shouldn't make up more than 10 percent of a pet dog's diet as it can cause gastrointestinal irritation.

Pumpkin just like oatmeal is a great source of fiber and offers vitamin A. Pumpkin can be given uncooked or from a tin.

With dog treats, you have to be careful they don't contain ingredients that give cause to weight gain. Green beans with no added salt not only are nutritious but low in calories and will fill your dog full of other good things (iron and vitamins). Note: Most beans contain a protein called lectins and if given to a dog in large amounts, it can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Cottage cheese is high in calcium and protein. Because it's a dairy product doesn't use it if your dog has problems digesting dairy products. As long as your dog isn't lactose intolerant, you can try other cheeses with lower-fat options.

Carrots are not just for rabbits. They are low in calories and high in fiber and vitamins.

Be careful with eggs even though they are high in protein. Too much is not good, and raw or undercooked eggs are a definite no for any dog regardless of a breed. Consider the risk of contamination from bacteria such as salmonella.

Bad Foods

Chocolate contains caffeine-like stimulants known as methylxanthines. If eaten in big amounts, it can cause serious side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, seizures, and even death.

Eat five a day to stay healthy they say, not in a dog's world, especially if grapes and raisins are included. Although these fruits are nutritious for you, they're toxic to canines.

Avoid avocado leaves, fruit, and seeds because they contain a toxin called persin which upsets the stomach, as well as cause breathing difficulties?

Freshwater angelfish is one of the most popular fish for aquarium owners

2019-11-23T06:11:00.002-08:00

Freshwater angelfish is one of the most popular fish for aquarium owners.

Freshwater angelfish is one of the most popular fish for aquarium owners. They have an elegant appearance, have a mild disposition. Other interesting information on Angelfish is that they swim up to the glass when being observed by people. They are easy to keep due to their hardiness and can withstand a wide range of water conditions and are able to feed on a range of foods.

Species and Strains

Freshwater Angelfish come from the Cichlidae family named Pterophyllum ("winged leaf"). There are three species in this family, the P. Altum, P. Leopoli and P. Scalare. The P. Scalare is the most popular and is what you will see in most aquariums. Even though it is referred to as P. Scalare, it is, in fact, the culmination of generations of selective breeding and cross-breeding and mutations that now give us such fish as Silver, Gold, Zebra, Black Lace, Zebra Lace, Smokey, Chocolate, Halfblack, Koi, Leopard, Blue Blushing, Silver Gold Marble, Ghost and more.

History

Talked about in 1824 by Lichtenstein, then later bred in captivity in the 1920s and 1930s in the United States. They originate from the Amazon River, Orinoco River, and Essequibo River in South America.

Description

Described as a "silver angel" the Angelfish is not like other cichlids, they have a flat body with a triangular-shaped dorsal and anal fin. Angelfish in the sea will often have stripes to help camouflage it. Angelfish will grow to 4 inches and up to 8 inches in height.

Aquarium Requirements

Freshwater angelfish like to be kept in warm aquariums around 80F (27C). You should not put more than 8 breeding size angelfish in a 50-gallon tank. When a breeding pair has been established they can have a 20-gallon tank of their own. Angelfish should not be kept with aggressive fish because they are mild nature and tend to get their fins nipped.

Diet

Freshwater angelfish do well on a mixture of flakes, frozen and live food. Be careful to not overfeed them though because they will not stop feeding and this may cause their death. Their favorite foods are blood worms, white worms, tubifex worms, and brine shrimp. They can still thrive if not given live foods.

Breeding of angelfish

Breeding of angelfish is an activity that is gaining a lot of popularity in the aquarium keeping community. Freshwater angelfish come from the cichlid family and tend to be aggressive sometimes. This guide will give you a couple tips on how and when to breed your angelfish. There are many breeds on Angelfish, and most of them have generally the same breeding habits. The main things you should take into consideration when breeding angelfish, is temperament and care level.

The first thing you are going to do when breeding of angelfish is to start to pair off the freshwater angelfish into groups of 1 male, 1 female. You want to start out by purchasing 8-10 angelfish, try to get an equal number of males and females. After you pair them off, they should bond together and start to pair off, swapping them out should pose little problem. Don't get discouraged if the first spawn doesn't turn out as planned. It is normal for the first batch to get eaten or not to spawn at all, you should just get a few fry out of the batch. With the fish that do pair up and go off to spawn, you should be able to get plenty of fry from their efforts.

You should move the fry to a different tank once they hatch and place them into jars to provide them a place of shelter while they get their feel on swimming. You should be sure to feed them plenty of newly hatched Mysis shrimp for the best possible results. This is a more expensive method, and if your fish pairs take care of their brood, you should just leave them in the aquarium to allow nature to take its course. A 33-gallon tank should be able to host about 250 pea-size freshwater angelfish to grow into dime-sized. If you do this, change the water at least 3 times a week.

Within about 3 months, your freshwater angelfish should grow a little larger about the size of a nickel. You should keep plants in the aquarium to absorb the nitrate levels. After a bit of time, pick the best out of the batch and keep 100 in an aquarium of about 33 gallons to grow them out. It will take around 6 months to fully pick out the best from your stock. Just remember that Angelfish do tend to eat some fry when they first spawn, so it is best to separate them for a little while until the fish can grow a little larger and fend for themselves.

Well, I hope you found this little article a bit helpful for breeding angelfish. If you felt discouraged, just remember, it takes a while to get the hang of this. Breeding angelfish can be difficult, and it will take a little while before you can completely get it down to a science. Breeding angelfish is a very rewarding experience, one that I recommend any serious Angelfish owner try to experience.

The personality and beauty of freshwater angelfish make them one of the most popular species that people add to their aquarium. They are very easy to care for and give a person the ability to expand their hobby to breeding Angelfish and raising fry (babies) smoothly.

Breeders either separate the parents from the eggs as soon as they are fertilized or allow the parents to stay with the babies in the first few weeks. Contrary to popular belief, Angelfish are very good parents and attend to their young, very well. The parents are very protective and are attentive parents.

Of course, the key to successfully breeding angelfish is to have a male and female, or a breeding pair. It is often difficult to tell males from females. Mature males will have a bump on their forehead and in some cases will change color when they have reached maturity. For instance, the koi will change color from a gray to a yellowish color on their heads. Other fish will change color as they mature and reach breeding age.

Getting six freshwater angelfish from a fish resource is a great way to find a breeding pair. When the fish reach maturity, they will pair off and will begin to protect a corner of the tank. In order to be successful, you will want to create an excellent breeding environment for your fish. Angelfish do well in a large tank with lots of plants.

Putting an external filter on the tank and covering the intake hose with a sponge will keep your babies from being sucked into the filter. The ideal breeding temperature of the water will be about 77 degrees or 25 celsius so you will want to get a reliable heating system for your tank. If you do not want your Angelfish to breed, keep the water a little cooler.

It will be important to provide plenty of surfaces for the fish to lay their eggs. Putting an upside-down terra cotta pot in the tank, leaning a piece of slate against the wall of the aquarium, and having lots of broadleaf plants in the tank will give your fish a place to lay their eggs. I know this is not ideal for the aesthetics of the tank, but when breeding of angelfish, fry safety must take priority!

Once the eggs have been laid, the parents will move the eggs up to five times depending on how safe they feel. This is done by scooping the eggs in their mouths and spitting the eggs onto another surface. If there are other fish in the tank when the parents are caring for their young, they can get very aggressive so it is a good idea to move your community fish to another tank when your freshwater angelfish are breeding.

It will take about 3 days for there you to begin to see activity. The tiny little tails will begin to wiggle from the eggs. The egg sac is part of the babies’ nutrition, and you will be able to see the sac gradually disappear over the next few days. Around day five, putting baby brine shrimp in the tank will assure that there is food for the babies when they begin to eat. Feeding the fry baby brine shrimp will help them grow faster and healthier.

Your fish will lay about 400 eggs, of which 50 to 200 will survive. Feeding the babies three times a day, followed by a change of water, will be important. By keeping a schedule, you will be able to maintain the temperature and cleanliness of the tank. This is an important thing to remember when breeding of angelfish because the babies are very sensitive to changes in their water.

Vacuuming your tank is also important. Keep debris out of the aquarium because feces and uneaten food can produce toxins that will make your babies ill. If you accidentally vacuum up fry, just put them back in the water.

At about 14 days, it will be necessary to move the parent from the babies. The parents will lay more eggs about every two to three weeks, and it will be important that the new babies are kept save from the older babies. The babies will begin to mature at about 3 to 4 months of age and will be ready to sell.

Freshwater angelfish like to select their own mates and because of this are unlike other cichlids. It is best to introduce around 6 juveniles into a tank and let them grow up together. Just before a year old, they will force other fish away from their section of the tank. At this stage, it is best to give them their own tank.

Freshwater angelfish is one of the most interesting fishes to breed in a home aquarium. However, the real challenge with these fishes is the identification of the sexes. Given that to an untrained eye, both males and females are the same; Many people do not understand the difference until one of the fishes actually starts laying eggs. There are many things you need to take care of ensuring successful breeding of angelfish for a good shoal.

Pairing the freshwater angelfish

This is the first and most important step in any breeding. As stated earlier, guessing the sex of the angelfish can be quite challenging. However, with keen observation and the right timing, you can find out which fish is the male and which one is the female. The papilla in a gravid Angelfish tends to be bigger than that of a male. This is the simplest test to distinguish males from females.

When it comes to pairing angelfish, the simplest option is to purchase paired couples from the store. However, this is a very expensive proposition. The better solution is to buy a bunch of male and female angelfishes and let them pair in your home tank.

Ideal Spawning Conditions

The angelfishes that are around a year old are in the perfect shape to spawn. To encourage spawning, ensure that the food fed to the fishes is tailored for the species and that the tank temperature is maintained at 27 to 29 degrees Celsius. Good fish food would be beef heart, daphnia mosquito larvae and some special shrimp preparations are known to induce spawning in these fishes.

Angelfish eggs

Just before the angelfish eggs laying, the female may get aggressive and will have a distinct bulge in the stomach. Typically, if you have a neat spawning slate in the tank, the female may use that to lay the eggs. Some females may choose to ignore that and pick some other spot. The male would closely follow the female and fertilize them.

Remember that the female can deposit eggs multiple times in the same spawning season, so if the parents eat some eggs, do not interfere as it is a natural process. Secondly, try to let the couples stay in their natural environment as much as possible to ensure successful angelfish eggs laying and fertilization.

Caring for Hatchlings

The eggs hatch within a week of fertilization. During the hatching process, it is important to protect the eggs from other adults. The best solution is to move the mating pair to a new tank or move the rest of the fishes out of the tank.

Once born, the attrition rate in these fishes is very high so you will see a lot of dead fry and you need to keep cleaning the water regularly. Ensure a lot of food is available to feed the growing fry. Also ensure that you have the right kind of food and the right size for the fry to consume. Small fry cannot eat brine shrimp and you need to take care of these issues.

Angelfish diseases

Regularly maintaining your tank is a good way to prevent sickness with your Angelfish. The common angelfish diseases are bacterial and parasitic. Bacterial diseases are cotton wool disease, dropsy, bleeding or red streaks on skin and fish TB. Parasitic diseases are Hexamita, ich or white spot disease and velvet disease.

Angelfish care

Freshwater angelfish are beautiful and captivating members of the aquarium. Originally from the cichlid family, freshwater angelfish come in many colors and varieties and angelfish are naturally found in the Amazon river and the surrounding region. In this article, I will be going over a few things to consider when you are looking to purchase angelfish for your aquarium.

The first thing you need to do is to pick out what type of angelfish you want. There are many varieties with different temperaments and water conditions they will need to survive. Pick something that you feel you can manage, or if you have the correct aquarium environment for them. Many angelfish need slightly acidic water to live happily in. Make sure you do plenty of research when you are purchasing your angelfish. Know exactly the water requirements you will need to have for your tank. Angelfish normally need a water pH level of around 5-6.5.

Freshwater angelfish is one of the most popular pet fish on the market. They are normally bred in captivity and most are bred for traits that make them adapt better to a variety of water conditions. You should make sure to provide your angelfish with plenty of rocks and plants in the aquarium, as they like to have places to hide. For feeding, angelfish are naturally carnivores and should be fed a variety of flakes, bloodworms, shrimp and brine shrimp. Angelfish are normally peaceful, but they are natural carnivores and should not be kept in the same aquarium with other spawning fish.

Freshwater angelfish may run into problems with disease. The most common disease that can show up in the aquarium is Ich. Ich is noticeable by white spots along your fish's body, also you can see your fish displaying behavior such as rubbing against various parts of the aquarium. There are various remedies to this that are sold around the web. If you suspect that Ich is in your aquarium, take care of the problem before it gets out of hand.

You can house many other species with freshwater angelfish. You should just make sure that they are of the same temperament and can survive in water conditions of around the same level. Also, you should make sure the fish are around the same size, angelfish can eat fish that are smaller than them and have a tendency to do so. The best match for an aquarium with angelfish tends to catfish, or other species of fish that are large and peaceful.

Well, I have outlined a few things to consider when purchasing angelfish for your aquarium. Freshwater angelfish make excellent additions to the aquarium and are very bright fish. If you care for your angelfish properly, they can provide you with many years of entertainment. As always, make sure you do plenty of research before you head out and purchase your very own angelfish. It may take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of caring for angelfish, you will enjoy them fully in no time at all.

Angel Fish occupy almost any position in the aquarium, yet they seem to enjoy standing still for quite a while defying gravity but can dart away from the stance with very great speed if aroused. They eat flakes easily; you need to provide a mixture of diet including live food. Please note that these fish will keep on eating until they suffer from being overfed, then they go off food, (hunger strike) and it's difficult to get them eating again, for example, they starve themselves to death.

Water temperature is also important because they are tropical fish from South America and should not be mixed with cold-water fish. Angels love to be in schools and are very unhappy being alone; they do not mix with cold-water fish such as Kois, and aggressive fish like Gouramis, as these fish loves to nip the Angels tail, this leads to various forms of disease resulting in death.

Suitable fish that are compatible for your aquarium are Silver Dollar, Silver Tips, Rainbows and Clown Loaches. With a proper tank maintenance, Angels will live for years. In the rivers Angels hide between broad leaves and twigs and it is a good idea to include live plants in the aquarium for they comfort, also include a piece of slate or broad log for breeding if required. Breeding is reasonably easy in the aquarium, providing other fish don't eat the eggs, or finally the young fries.

The female chooses her mate who accompanies her for a while, and when she is ready to lay her eggs she cleans the area, deposits the eggs, and both parents fan the water around them to ensure proper circulation. After about two days, the little ones are hatched, and they survive by eating the remainder of their yoke sac. After one week, they will be swimming and can be fed with Brine Shrimp.

It's best to remove them from the tank unless you have enough plants in the aquarium for the young to hide, as other fish in the aquarium will eat them. Finally, Angel Fish are very popular in home aquariums and public display tanks, and these fish will live for years if desired conditions are met.

Freshwater angelfish requires relatively large swimming spaces. The general rule is to allocate 4 gallons of water per full-grown Angelfish. It is also important to keep the tank clean. Young Angelfish require more frequent water change - as much as 50% of the water should be changed each day. With a full-grown Angelfish, this can be relaxed to about 20% of water change every week. A water temperature of 74 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit is generally advised for non-spawning Angelfish. A slightly higher temperature of about 80 degrees are recommended during spawning.

Freshwater angelfish generally look calm, but they are actually categorized as semi-aggressive. Certain fish types like Tetras and Platies can be placed together with an Angelfish in an aquarium. However, many Angelfish owners choose not to mix them with any other fish types because their fins are very vulnerable to nipping, even by smaller fish.

As with any other fish type, Angelfish requires proper feeding and the right environment. Angelfish thrive on flakes and live food, including shrimp, bloodworm, and even insects on the water surface. Extra care should be given to spawning fish as they are more aggressive and easily distressed. It is best to place live plants with broad leaves and decorations with flat surfaces for them to lay their eggs.

There are many other diseases that can strike freshwater angelfish. These include the infamous Angelfish virus for which there is no cure yet. Symptoms of this disease include lethargy, excessive slime, and clamped fins. The virus can leave an Angelfish infectious infection for up to six months, so it is important to quarantine sick fish to avoid widespread infection. Hexamita and Capillaria are parasites that cause fish to lose their appetite and slowly deteriorate? Ich is another disease that can hit Angelfish. When infected, tiny white spots appear on the gills and fins and the fish will tend to rub their bodies on rocks and other decors in the aquarium.

Angelfish types

Some famous angelfish types are given below the details. They are very popular in aquarium fish varieties.

Flame angelfish

The flame angelfish (Centropyge Loriculus) is arguably the most recognizable member of the genus centropyge in the marine aquarium hobby today. This is mainly because of its stunning beauty. It is a bright mix between orange and red with blue accents toward the end of its anal and dorsal fins.

Also present are the tiger-like black stripes that run down its main body. While most flame angelfish are similar in appearance, they usually vary regarding the number of stripes present along with the overall color. Some have more orange than others.

True Hawaiian flame angels are a bright red all over their body with very little to no traces of orange present. Their stripes are also a lot narrower than other variants. Flame angelfish collected from the waters of Hawaii are rare, as most of them are shipped from Christmas and Marshall Islands.

Once they have been properly acclimated and have adjusted to the marine aquariums environment, they are hardy fish. They are grazers that continually nip on live rock, algae, crustaceans and unfortunately on corals as well. Coral nipping behavior is never a sure thing, but the general consensus is they usually do not stop once they start nipping.

A great many marine aquarium hobbyists have kept them in full reef aquariums and have gotten away with it but there is always a risk. And once they start nipping you will have to deal with removing them from the reef aquarium somehow, a task that highly undesirable as it usually means dismantling the rock structure if a trap does not work.

They will eat dry pellet food along with frozen fish foods given enough time and are generally worry-free once they have gotten used to their new environment. They can be quite aggressive, however. They do not tolerate the presence of other members of the dwarf angelfish family and will likely harass another flame angelfish to death if kept together in a small aquarium.

Queen angelfish

The Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus Ciliaris) is one of the larger marine aquarium angelfish that the hobby sees quite frequently. They are also one of the more attractive members of the angelfish that sell well along with the Emperor Angelfish (Pomacanthus Imperator) and the French Angelfish (Pomacanthus Paru). They come from throughout the Caribbean Ocean and can be found as far up as Florida.

They are big, with adult specimens approaching a length of about 18 inches. However, in captivity, they are more likely to reach a maximum of 16 inches. As is common with larger angelfish, they look somewhat different as juveniles. While adults have a bright blue crown and are mostly blue, green and yellow throughout their bodies, juveniles have bright blue stripes across their faces and bodies.

As they grow, these colors will slowly fade. Juveniles also have an interesting role that they assume in the wild. They pick off parasites from larger fish, which in essence, makes them a cleaner fish. Queen angels have a very similar cousin in the form of the blue angelfish. To the common viewer, they may look entirely alike. The easiest way to tell them apart is to look for the presence of the blue crown on their forehead, which is only found in Queen angels.

Multicolor angelfish

The Multicolor Angelfish (Centropyge Multicolor) is a deepwater species that is sold from time to time in the marine aquarium hobby. Usually, the fact that it hails from deeper waters would mean it is a harder than normal dwarf angelfish to rear in captivity. This is untrue as far as the Multicolor Angelfish is concerned.

The multicolor angel is an especially hardy member of the genus entropy once it has been acclimated and adjusted to its new living quarters. Upon purchasing a specimen, they may be shy initially, as they are used to water without too much light. Multicolor angels are considered aggressive species that will usually dominate smaller aquariums.

Their main body is mostly white with shades of orange, yellow, and brown on its lower half. It also has a distinctive electric blue crown on its head. Its anal and dorsal fins are blue to black while its face and caudal fin are all yellow.

They do not tolerate other dwarf angels and will usually harass them to no end. Larger aquariums above 150 gallons are needed to keep another centropyge with the multicolor angelfish.

As they are from deeper waters, ensure there is no swim bladder damage present as it can be damaged as the fish is brought up rapidly to the surface. Any specimen that is seen to be tilting side to side or from up to down should be avoided.

Feeding them is an easy matter, as they will usual sample anything is thrown into the tank once they recognize that you are a source of food. In the beginning, they may be hesitant, but this is usually taken care of overtime. A good mix of foods including frozen meaty foods, greens, and dry foods are a good way to ensure they get a balanced diet.

Fancy goldfish diet, health, tank, how to care for them and many more.

What is a fancy goldfish?

Fancy goldfish are a temperate breed that can be found in cool streams, lakes, and ponds throughout Asia and part of Eastern Europe. However, the ones you will buy for your tank have been bred in captivity. Once you've decided that the Goldfish is the right one for you - you will need to find the right kind of fancy goldfish. Take your time and find out more, rather than just rush out and buy the first goldfish you find in the first pet store you come by. Decide on how many you want to buy. If you really want just a single Goldfish, please do a re-think on the issue because it can get lonely and boring for a lone ranger in a tank! Once you've thought it out, here are some things you must keep in mind:

Choose the right pet shop. Ask people you know who are committed fish keepers for reputed goldfish dealers. These are the people who care and would have professional knowledge of breeding and nurturing goldfish. See if they give a proper fish guarantee. When you enter the shop, look around at all the tanks. Make sure that the tanks are not overcrowded with fish. See if all kinds of fish are thrown together in one tank or care is taken to separate the various species. Look out for dead floating fish. The dead fish could have spread an infection to the other fish.

Question the fancy goldfish Dealer. If the dealer claims that the goldfish are imported, then find out which country they are from and when they arrive. Ask him or she is the correct quarantine procedures have been adopted before putting up the goldfish for sale. If they were bred, find out when they were bred and how the fish have been kept till now as I have used what kind of medications and for how long. Find out if the dealer has used salt in the water.

Observe how the fish swims. This is a good gauge to identify healthy fish. A fish should be active, swimming with ease and style, and poking around curiously at nooks and corners. Choose a goldfish that looks active and doesn't wobble or tilt to one side or just rest at the bottom. Tap the tank and see how the goldfish reacts. A fish slow in its reaction might be a sick one. Make sure that it's not opening its mouth too much for air, as it might indicate problems with the gills.

Check out the fins. Make sure that the dorsal fin is straight and stands up. The backs of the goldfish should be smooth, without unsightly bumps. Also check that all the fins are healthy, even and are not rotted away or damaged. In all, a fancy goldfish should have a dorsal fin (unless it is a goldfish without a dorsal fin), pectoral fins that extend out on sides, two anal fins or one right in the middle. Beware a goldfish with just one anal fin that's placed a kind of off to one side. It could mean that the other anal fin is growing inwards and that could be fatal to the goldfish.

Inspect the looks. Make sure that you give the goldfish you are choosing a thorough look over. See that the fish has a nice symmetrical shape and make sure they don't have large heads compared to their bodies. It would do well to feel the fish check if the skin is too slimy or too dry but at least ensure that the skin is free of spots and odd bumps and that the gills are red. There should be no redness in the anal region and definitely nothing sticking out or leaking out. The outside of the mouth should be free from redness and white strings and the eyes free from white flecks.

Fancy goldfish size

Fancy goldfish is a member of the carp family. You might say it's the smallest of the brood, but that wouldn't be entirely accurate either. History says that the goldfish is actually related to the dark-gray carp that was first found in East Asia before it was introduced in Europe during the 17th century.

Goldfish were first domesticated in China. They are the domesticated type of dark-gray/brown carp native to East Asia. They can reach a length of 23" and can weigh as much as nine pounds. However, most don't reach that size. Most goldfish live for six to eight years. They are colorful fish.

You may not believe this, but the fancy goldfish can grow to be nearly two feet long or about 59 cm. We have measured the biggest goldfish to weigh about 9.9 pounds of 4.5 kgs.

Fancy goldfish lifespan

However, the average goldfish is usually about half the size of these whoppers. The world record of the oldest goldfish is 49 years old, but they can live to be over 20 years old. Household goldfish are kept in aquariums usually live only about six to eight years.

Contrary to popular belief, the goldfish lifespan can last for years given the right habitat and care. The lifespan of a goldfish is also dependent on what variety it is, as some are known to live 10 years while some can go for 20 years or more. Here are some types of goldfish with their known lifespan and some tips on how you can make them last for as long as they can:

Common Goldfish

The common goldfish is one hardy breed of goldfish; They can live in just about any kind of water condition and will also eat anything. It doesn't take much to keep these goldfish happy, you just need to feed them often and keep them in a tank where the water temperature is not too cold. If they do not get any ailments or serious diseases, the common goldfish lifespan can exceed 10 years.

Shubunkin Goldfish

Shubunkin goldfish are not gold-colored at all; they are more like a combination of different colors. Most shubunkins have a combination of translucent and metallic scales that are colored silver or white, with splotches of black, red, brown, or blue. The shubunkin goldfish is a lot like the common goldfish because they are very low maintenance pets, perfect for beginners. The average shubunkin goldfish lifespan is more than 15 years.

Black Moor Goldfish

The Black Moor Goldfish is characterized by its black and velvety coloration and it's protruding eyes; though they do not protrude as much as those of the telescopic eye goldfish. This kind of goldfish is also great pets for beginners since they are not picky on food, and they are pretty resistant to most diseases that goldfish usually get. Among the other goldfish varieties, the Black Moor Goldfish lifespan is by far the longest. The average lifespan of a Black Moor is 20 years or so, but there have been reports of them living for more than 25 years.

Tips on Extending Goldfish Lifespan

The lifespan of the goldfish stated above results from giving the fish the proper care that they need. In order for a goldfish to live to the extent of their life spans, it is necessary that you take care of them properly and place them in an environment where they can live happily.

One great tip is to remember to not overfeed your fish. For one, when goldfish are overfed their bodies swell up too much because of the amount of food, making them sluggish and prone to numerous diseases. If you also put in more food than your fish can eat, they will just dissolve into the water and make it murky.

Another tip for extending the goldfish lifespan is to always keep the water in the tank clean. You should replace at least 25 percent of the tank's water every month. Placing a filter in the tank can also help in keeping the water clean and clear, and it also helps in circulating the water and keeping it oxygenated.

Fancy goldfish types

There are many varieties of domesticated fancy goldfish. These include Common, Black Moor, Bubble Eye, Celestial Eye, Comet, Fantail, Lionhead, Oranda, Pearlscale, Pompom, Ryukin, Shubunkin, Telescope Eye, Ranchu, Panda Moor and Veiltail.

Fancy goldfish are some of the most popular choices for aquariums. This could be because of the large variety of fancy goldfish. It is easy for most people to find one or more types that they really like to watch. Another reason for the popularity of fancy goldfish is the fact that they are considered to be cold-water fish so the added expense of an aquarium heater is not required.

If you are considering a fancy goldfish for your aquarium, here are some of the more common types available:

Veiltail: As the name implies this fancy goldfish is known for its tail. The tail fin can grow to be several times the length of the goldfish's body. It moves easily in any water or air current in your aquarium making it one of the most mesmerizing fish to watch as it swims.

Ranchu: The Ranchu is one of the best known of the dorsal less fancy goldfish. The lack of the dorsal fin can create difficulties for these fish. It can impair their ability to swim in a normal manner. This makes it important that the Ranchu be kept in an aquarium only with other goldfish that do not have dorsal fins. They can easily starve to death if they are in an aquarium with faster-moving fish.

Telescope: Telescope goldfish are noted for the unusual eyes. While they come in a range of colors like most other goldfish, their eyes are the defining characteristic of this fish. Just as a telescope retracts into slightly larger tubes when closed, the eyes of this fish appear to be set on a series of circles that are slightly larger at the bottom and grow smaller as they approach the eye itself.

Pearlscale: Pearlscale goldfish are best known for the rounded scales that are often a pearlescent finish. It appears that the scales are bumped up almost like half a pearl stuck onto the side of the fish. This species has the most rounded body of any of the fancy goldfish.

Oranda: The Oranda is known for the head growth that is an obvious characteristic. However, there are variations within this breed that appeal to many people. The body style is one of the variations. Oranda can have an almost egg-shaped body or a more streamlined body that is reminiscent of the single-tailed goldfish.
This is only a small sampling of the variety of fancy goldfish that can be found. There are actually at least 18 different species of these fish. Considering this fact, it is not surprising that it is easy for a wide variety of people to find a type that they personally favor. Goldfish are also popular choices because they are not aggressive fish. However, because many of the fancy goldfish varieties are slow-moving it is necessary to use some care when adding them to an aquarium containing other breeds of fish. It is easy for them to starve, even with increased feedings due to quicker moving fish reaching the food first.

Fancy goldfish care

When it comes to looking after your fancy goldfish, there is nothing more important than keeping a clean, sanitary environment. Unfortunately, a lot of people just don't take the necessary precautions to keep their goldfish free from disease. Here are some simple precautions you can take to ensure no malicious bacteria enter your fish's environment.

How often should you change goldfish water?

If there is an area that most fancy goldfish owners are particularly lazy at, then it's got to be a changing the water of their tanks, bowls or aquariums. Now unless you have a state-of-the-art filtration system & seen usually in commercial aquariums & then you will be required to change the water of your tank once a week! I know, I know, it sounds like a lot of work, but if you decide to leave it for any longer, you're giving certain harmful bacteria a chance to multiply and mutate, which will eventually affect your goldfish.

When changing the water of the tank, a lot of people make one more mistake, they don't wash their hands! Make sure you always wash your hands with antibacterial soap before you even think about handling your fancy goldfish! Human hands are a breeding ground for incredibly harmful bacteria of which could be lethal to your goldfish.

Cleaning Your Filter

I want you to look at your filter and check to see how clean it is? Is there any unsightly fungus inside or outside of the filter? Because if there is, it's likely that it's spreading disease through the tank. Make sure you always clean and rinse out your filter every time you change the water. Filters can be a breeding ground for bacteria that cause mostly Ick, which is one of the most common diseases associated with goldfish.

Get Yourself a Water Siphon

Water siphons are used to clean the gravel in a tank. They work by sucking out all the bad particles that build up over time and should be used thoroughly twice a week to keep conditions in your tank optimal for living conditions. If you do have a siphon, it means you won't have to completely change the water in your tank week after week. It is recommended that you still try to change at least 25% however, to keep things nice and clean.

Caring for goldfish should come naturally if we love them as pets. Goldfish are hardy pets and do not require the care and grooming that other pets demand. Caring for goldfish is possible with a little effort. The rewards are, of course, immense in comparison to the efforts.

The water in which the goldfish are kept should be clean at all times. A fully grown goldfish will need 20 liters of water to live comfortably. This shouldn't be compromised. This is the first tip in caring for goldfish. Goldfish live in their own toilet and they are sensitive to their urine.

If the water in the tank is not sufficient to dilute the concentration of urine, then they may die. In addition to keeping sufficient water in the aquarium, you should change the water frequently, daily if possible. Only half of the aquarium water should be changed at any time if tap water is used. Tap water contains chlorine, and it is toxic to goldfish.

Fancy goldfish care also means that you should clean the aquarium regularly. The aquarium should be fitted with an air pump and filter to provide oxygen and clean water to goldfish.

Proper feeding plays a vital role in fancy goldfish care. Fancy goldfish eat less and dropping more food in the aquarium will not be eaten by them but will pollute the aquarium water. The goldfish will surface up frequently gasping, unable to bear the stink.

Koi goldfish need not be fed or fed only once in a day as they are bottom feeders and feed on algae. Goldfish don't digest meat well and shouldn't be fed meat. Feeding live worms also is not a part of properly caring for goldfish. Live worms may contain harmful parasites that may affect the health of goldfish.

Diseases of goldfish

Fancy goldfish can live for decades and in order for yours to be long-lived, you'll want to educate yourself about the different diseases of goldfish that can make your fish sick. Recognizing these diseases allows you to be able to take quick action so that your fish remains healthy.

One problem that isn't really a disease but can make your goldfish miserable is constipation. Goldfish have a compressed digestive system so feeding them the right foods is important. Dry pellet food is often the culprit, as many owners don't know that the pellets need to be pre-soaked first for better digestion. Feeding your fancy goldfish peas that are cut in half is a tried-and-true remedy for goldfish.

Another disease of goldfish If you see your goldfish floating to the top either right side up or upside down, he could be constipated or he might have a swim bladder disorder. Goldfish have a swim bladder which can, at times, become inflamed causing them to float upwards. Some ways to avoid this include feeding them some fiber, soaking the pellet food before you give it to them and making sure the tank has good water quality.

One common disease of goldfish is called fin rot. As the name implies, this appears as a white dotted edge on the fins. This can happen if your fish gets an injury to the fin, and it becomes infected with bacteria. If your fish is stressed out because of poor water quality, this can be a serious problem, so be sure to keep your aquarium maintained properly.

One of the more common diseases of goldfish is called Ich. If your goldfish looks like he has grains of salt on him, it could be the parasite known as Ich. Ich can be very invasive if not treated quickly. If you do regular water changes, your chances for Ich are less likely as the only area problem with fish that are stressed.

Another parasite that can attach itself to your goldfish is anchor worm. A fish infected with anchor worm will rub against the gravel or decorations trying to rid himself of the parasite. It looks like a white stick with a red ring at the attachment spot.

Dropsy is one of the many bacterial infections that your goldfish can succumb to. These bacteria work from the inside out. Typical outward appearances of this are you fish scales sticking out. The problem with dropsy is that it is difficult to detect and once you do, it may be too late. However, if you notice your fish's eyes sticking out, this might be an early sign and you can try to treat him with medication.

Another disease of goldfish that can afflict your fish is called a hole in the head disease. Here you will see small holes in the head, which will eventually turn into an eruption. Eventually, your fish will just sit around not swimming or eating much.

Your fish's health and wellbeing depend on you keeping an eye out for signs of this disease. Making sure you do regular water changes and vacuum the tank regularly will help keep your fish from getting stressed and add to their overall health.

Eyestrain problem

Fancy goldfish have a very well developed vision; in fact, the optic lobe--the vision center—is the largest part of your goldfish's brain. Though a little short-sighted, they have an almost 360-degree view of the world because their eyes are on the sides of their heads. That lets them see two things at the same time - which is great for finding food and for keeping an eye open for predators.

Like us, fancy goldfish see in color, but they can also see ultraviolet light. They have greater sensitivity to light than we do but, unlike us, they have no eyelids because their eyes are constantly bathed in water. That gives them a problem we don't have; they can't shut their eyes to avoid bright lights. Furthermore, they can't dilate their pupils, so their eyes adjust to changes in light levels much more slowly than ours. It can take fancy goldfish twenty minutes to adapt to lights being turned on or off, which is why they often dash for cover when you turn on a light. It's impossible for them to look away so all they can do is try to hide behind rocks and plants.

It's important to protect your fish from bright lights and sudden movements and to spend a little time working out the right location for their tank.

Avoid placing your tank on or near a windowsill - the worst place for bright sunlight. If you can't avoid putting the tank near a window, make sure you shade it from the incoming light using window blinds, or the wrap-round tank 'wallpaper' that most fish shops sell.

Remember that bright sunlight isn't a problem only in the summer months. It can be worse in winter because the winter sun is lower in the sky. Think how dazzling it can be when you are driving your car towards the sun, and think how much worse it could be for your fancy goldfish in their tank if they have to suffer that all day, every day.

Add some stones or a small upturned flower pot for your fish to find refuge in.

There may be problems with a bright light that you haven't noticed. Try crouching down at each end of the tank and look through it to see what your fish see. Check for mirrors or other shiny objects that may be causing a problem for your fish but which have never been a problem for you.

Room lights can be another problem for your fancy goldfish. Although you may think nothing of it when you switch a room light on or off, your goldfish needs up to twenty minutes to adapt to the change in light. If your tank doesn't have a lid, it's a good idea to get one, especially if you have a ceiling light shining directly into the tank. If your fish tank is fitted with a light, turn the room light on first and then wait fifteen minutes before turning on the tank light so your fish has time to adjust to the light.

At night, switch the tank light off fifteen minutes before you switch the room light off. If you have dimmer switches for any of the lights near your fish tank, the job is easy. You could also consider putting your tank light on a timer so it comes on after you start your day and goes off before you go to bed.

Sudden movement is something else your fish can't close their eyes to. When you're positioning your fish tank, it's important to think about the activity that will happen near the tank. Avoid the hallway and kitchen if you can. Both these locations might seem like good ones, but each has drawbacks. The hallway is likely to be one place in your house that gets a lot of traffic so your fish may see a lot of giant fast-moving objects hurtling towards their world.

The kitchen, though a commonplace to put a fish tank, can also be a busy place. Cooking involves constant moving about between refrigerator, worktop, cooker, and cupboards. If your fish are nearby they get a constant stream of rapid and unexpected, and possibly frightening, a movement they can't escape from.

A quiet corner of your living room is often a much better location and provides you with the opportunity to sit and relax watching your fancy goldfish. But even here it's not relaxing for your fish. Make sure the tank is not in the line of sight of the TV - a rich source of sudden movement. Your bedroom is a good location because most of the time there's not much happening there. Your child's bedroom, however, could be a very active place, depending on the age of your child.

Of course, in every home, there will always be some bright lights and some sudden movement. However, by using tank 'wallpaper' to cover one or more sides of the tank, you can protect your fish from the worst of them, and create a greater sense of security for your fish. Keeping plenty of healthy plants in the tank helps screen fish from visual noise and makes the tank more interesting for you to look at. Developing a fisheye view of the world helps you give your fish a more comfortable and healthier home and a longer life.

Goldfish diet

If you are looking for a source of proper nutrition for your goldfish, goldfish flakes are a good choice. Not only is it good for your fish, but they love it. Goldfish flakes are full of protein, vitamins, and carbohydrates - all the nutrients a goldfish diet will help your fish to survive.

Feeding your goldfish is a tricky business. It is important not to overfeed them. Because goldfish are always hungry, they will eat as much fancy goldfish flakes and you offer to them. Remember, never to feed more than your goldfish can eat in two to four minutes. The goldfish's stomach is about the size of its eye. Use this as a guide - don't feed more than its stomach can hold.

Overfeeding your fish can cause the food to move too quickly through its system. This can lead to swim bladder problems and maybe even cause death. It can also affect the water quality and cleanliness of your tank. Use the same principles when you feed large goldfish. If they are in a pond, goldfish flakes are often not needed, as the goldfish will gather food from natural things in the pond.

Your fancy goldfish should be fed once a day or once every two days. Make sure to soak the goldfish flakes first. If you don't do this, the flakes will lay on the surface of the water. When the goldfish feed, they will go to the top and take in excess air into their swim bladder. If this happens, they may end up with digestive problems and may even die.

To ensure the health of your goldfish, it is important to keep the goldfish tank clean.

Fancy goldfish tank setup

The most common types of goldfish are London & Bristol shubunkins, jikin, wakin, comet and fantail. These will do well in a goldfish pond because they are pretty hardy. Moor, veiltail, oranda and lionheads are more of a summer fish only.

The size of your goldfish pond can be small or large. The most important thing to remember is a fancy goldfish tank setup and the depth should be at least 80cm to keep it from freezing. Goldfish will thrive in a pond that freezes occasionally, as long as there is enough oxygen and it doesn't freeze over.

In the winter, your goldfish will slow down and not eat. This is normal. They may also stay at the bottom of the pond. But in the spring, they will return to normal activity. Good goldfish care includes making sure that your pond has a good filtration system. Adding plants will raise the oxygen levels and are also a good source of food for your fish.

Rudd, tench, orfe, and koi are good fish to consider for your goldfish pond. Orfe fish will eat the excess goldfish eggs and will keep the pond from becoming overcrowded. Adding koi fish is good because when they breed, they will produce a sterile fish that also helps with the fish population. It is important to maintain the pH level in the pond. The water will need to be changed or additives used to return the pH level to the proper state if the water becomes too acidic.

When goldfish bowls are used, the water level should be maintained at half of the bowl. This facilitates more surface area, which allows more oxygen to help in oxygenation. In general, it is advised not to use goldfish bowls for maintaining healthy fish. The goldfish are healthier, happier, and the display is excellent in a fancy goldfish aquarium.

The number of fish that have to be kept determines the size of the goldfish aquarium. When breeding, each fish requires about 15 gallons of water, but in general, about 10 to 20 gallons of water per fish should be adequate. How to breed goldfish in an aquarium is an art that can be learned with patience. The stand that supports the tank should be selected regarding the size of the goldfish aquarium. The weight of the fish, equipment, decorations, tank, sand, and gravel all has to be added to know the entire weight. Each gallon (4.5 liters) of water will weigh 10 lb (4.5 kg), and the factor that contributes to the major weight should be considered. Cushioning material such as Polyurethane, rubber or equivalent impact-absorbing substance can be used between tank and the stand. The cushioning materials avoid pressure points and do not allow cracks to develop on the goldfish aquarium.

According to fancy goldfish tank setup the total quantity of water in the goldfish aquarium, the correct aeration and filtration can be selected. It is important that the water in the aquarium is always maintained absolutely clean. To make sure that it is without any contaminants the gravel, sand, decoration, and equipment such that immersed in the Goldfish aquarium have to be cleaned thoroughly. During breeding, natural plants help the fish very much, even otherwise natural plants help a healthy environment.

Algae are formed in the absence of sunlight. It is advisable to avoid direct sunlight and a cold draft when choosing the location of the Goldfish aquarium. The artificial light should be adequate for the goldfish. Goldfish aquarium is recommended to be placed in such locations, avoiding direct sunlight and a draft of cold air. The useful algae formation is prevented by direct sunlight. The water in the tank can become very cold which may be harmful or may kill fish in the tank. Adequate artificial lighting has to be provided for a healthy environment.

Owning your own goldfish is the perfect stepping stone to growing your fish tank aquarium hobby. Don't be fooled though, with proper care goldfish can and will leave for many years. Make sure you are prepared to care for them or if it's for the kids, make sure you will pick up the pieces when they lose interest.

Experts will recommend against fish bowls, it's just not enough space to keep a goldfish happy. A larger environment will take longer to a change in PH and ammonia levels, small bodies of water can change very fast if you don't keep on top of it - their results could be disastrous. What I'm talking about is with small bowls, you're going to change the water every single day.

Fish Tank Decorations

A castle or buried treasure chest might not really replicate the natural environment of a goldfish, but a few of these decorations shouldn't hurt. Fish like to have the option to hide and conceal itself behind objects, having a few fish tank decorations is better than no objects at all.

Plants are often one of the key ingredients when building a goldfish tank, they provide real shelter and help keep the levels of nitrogen low, much like an in their real environment. Though it can be a double-edged sword. Decaying dead plants will only add to the level of waste creating poisonous ammonia, keep your plants in good shape, and you shouldn't have too many problems. One more point, goldfish specifically, are known to devour live plants, aggressively so keep an eye on any new plants added to your aquarium.

Fancy goldfish tank size

Many people choose to keep goldfish due to their natural beauty and relative ease of care. With common maintenance to their tank and the water, goldfish can thrive with minor effort. In order to ensure that your tank is nearly self-sufficient, it is important to pay attention to that you are not overpopulating a small space with too many fish. Not only will this mean that you will be forced to change out the water and care for the tank more frequently, but you can also put your goldfish in danger.

Why Proper Space is Important

A couple of the biggest health reasons for ensuring that you are not keeping too many goldfish in your tank are the filtration system you have in place and the amount of water volume available per fish.

Your tank's filtration system is vital because it is what is keeping all the bad waste particles out of the water. A filtration system that is not powerful enough can mean you're going to be needing to change the water much more often, as it will become dirty faster. It can also cause health issues with your goldfish due to waste matter, algae and decaying food present in the water.

The second important reason to have proper space is the amount of available space. Without enough space per fish, you run the risk that has wasted not being able to be broken down and absorbed by the water, posing a serious health risk. Also, without sufficient space, oxygen and carbon dioxide will have a difficult time dispersing through the water.

A Quick Way to Figure out How Much Space you need

Luckily, finding the proper number of goldfish for your tank is a fairly simple task. For tanks keeping fancy goldfish, you need to have at least 15 gallons of water per fish. If you are keeping single tail goldfish, the space requirements are slightly higher - 20 gallons of water per fish. By ensuring that your tank is meeting these minimum requirements, you're able to avoid many of the hazardous effects of overpopulating.

Choosing the correct number of fish for your tank size is imperative. Without proper planning, you are not only creating a significant amount of extra work for yourself, but you are also putting the health of your goldfish as a risk. Understanding the space needs of your fish is an easy process and one which will save numerous headaches down the road.

How do you know what gender your goldfish is?

If you plan to the breeding of goldfish, then separate males from female goldfish at least a few weeks. It's very important how to recognize which is a male goldfish and which is a female. If you have been keeping goldfish for a while, this might be a no-brainer, but for the benefit of first-timers here are a few details -Females will have a softer bulged belly than males. Goldfish males will create white pimple-looking patches on their gill cover and pectoral fins called 'breeding tubercles'Males will possess longer and continuous ridge along their bottom side from pectoral fins to anal fin. In females, the ridge will be shorter, discontinuous, and thinner. It is a good idea to have two males per female.

Females goldfish are usually stouter when viewed from the top, while mature males goldfish have tubercles on their heads or small bumps that resemble a star.

Breeding of goldfish

It is an important breeding of goldfish to ensure the gender of each of the goldfish prior to breeding. But this would be effective only when they attain spawning conditions. Attempt to pregnant goldfish must be initiated only after the first year. But until they reach 8 cm long, it is not easy to make them have sex.

When they reach the age of three, it would be ideal for pregnant goldfish. The changes are comfortably and clearly made out of male fish. The male develops white breeding tubercles. These appear on the gill operculum, in the front ray of the pectoral fins and sometimes on the head about the size of a pinhead. The stomach of the pregnant goldfish becomes bulged and full.

The change in water temperature triggers the breeding of goldfish in all types. We change the temperature of the water to induce breeding. The optimum temperature for the breeding of goldfish is 20ºC even though the range of temperatures can be between 10 to 26ºC for pregnant goldfish. The experts among breeders advise that the fish must be kept apart before breeding. Obviously, before they are sexed the possibility does not exist.

The breeders wait until the optimum temperature is reached or increases the temperature gradually by artificial means. The chances of increasing the success rate of breeding of goldfish lie in the increase of proportion between male and female goldfish. The ratio of one female to two males ensures the chances of successful breeding. Each fish must have at least fifteen gallons of water. Overcrowding must be avoided as pregnant goldfish find survival tough under overcrowded conditions.

As the male swims behind the pregnant goldfish in a ritualistic spawning chase, it conveys the message that they are ready for breeding. For several hours, the male swims behind the pregnant goldfish and pushes her on her stomach again and again. A few days from the day the fishes are brought together, the chase occurs if all the conditions to mate are perfect.

Beginners into fish keeping are plagued by the question of how to breed goldfish? Which type of goldfish can be easily bred? Great attention and concentration are needed for the breeding of goldfish. Breeding of more than two types of goldfish is not advisable. The varieties that are not so sensitive to pregnancy and less troublesome must be selected for breeding. Breeding of goldfish must easy to breed single tail type that is ideal for beginners.

The temperature of the water can be raised 2 degrees each day for six weeks. For eight weeks prior to breeding, avoid feeding dry food. A small quantity of live food is ideal for this period. Fifteen gallons of water per fish is adequate for the breeding of goldfish.

How to breed goldfish under sterilized conditions? Ensure that the goldfish tank is cleaned perfectly. Leaving the cleaned tank dry for ten days will kill all the germs. Unraveled nylon scrub or natural plants would be suitable for spawning.

How to breed goldfish to ensure spawning? The male-female the ratio is two is to one for the breeding of goldfish. After introducing fish raising the water temperature to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (20-degree Centigrade) with good aeration is recommended for the breeding of goldfish. The female is bulky at the back with a protrusion on the left side, but the male develops breeding tubercles.

The chasing may start on day one or in a few days. The chase may start and continue several hours with the fish resting in between which is normal. Introducing the fish into a tank with the same temperature of the water after spawning is the correct procedure. Then the water temperature is lowered step by step.

How to the breeding of goldfish after eggs are laid? While breeding of goldfish, the eggs may not be sighted easily. The eggs are difficult to identify. At 70 degrees Fahrenheit (20-degree Centigrade) water the eggs will hatch in four days. It is normal for the fish fry to stay at the bottom of the tank. The food sack carried by the fish fry will be adequate for two days. Then they search for food. For such young fish fry, the right feed is Brine Shrimp.

If you have a tank large enough, you can breed your own goldfish right at home. But before you begin, there are a few things you need to learn about goldfish breeding. You just can't toss the female and male together and hope for the best. This article will give you a few tips for breeding goldfish.

First things first, you must select the fish you want to breed. They've matured at one, but it's best to use fish that are at least three years old. You'll also need at least two males for every female in the tank.

The tank that you use for the breeding of goldfish should be able to hold at least 20 gallons. You can help move the process along by increasing the water temperature two degrees daily until it reaches 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The tank should also have a few plants in it. You'll find out why in a minute.

Once the male is ready, he will start chasing the female around bumping into her. This will prompt her to release eggs in batches, which the male immediately fertilizes. Once all of the eggs have been fertilized, you should remove the adult fish from the tank. They will eat the eggs if you fail to do so.

The eggs released when goldfish breeding is very sticky. They'll easily stick to the plants in the tank instead of sinking to the bottom. If you notice any clear eggs, you should remove them immediately. These eggs are infertile and are at risk for a fungal infection. The fungus can spread to otherwise healthy eggs and kill them.

Oscar Cichlid Most favorite species of cichlids

2019-11-19T06:11:00.000-08:00

Oscar Cichlid

The Oscar Cichlid, or otherwise known as "Oscar fish", have been one of the most favorite species of cichlids considered for petting because they are fun to keep and are friendly to their owners. They could easily recognize their owners and be aware of what is happening around them.

They are natives to the different rivers of South America, specifically from the waterways of Peru, Brazil and French Guiana. But before going out to purchase one for a pet, there are important things to know about Oscar Cichlids that you need to consider.

Enthusiasts planning to raise Oscar Cichlids should prepare a large tank, spacious enough to accommodate the immediate growth of this kind of fish. Oscars grow an inch after its eight to the tenth month. Expect them to reach about 10-12 inches in their first year. Gravel is the most recommended substrate for the tanks since they are abundant in Oscar's natural environment.

However, be sure to make use of the rounded kind since these types of fish are inclined to dig, and sharp gravel might harm them. Furthermore, there are observations that these fish do not prefer bright lights. Thus, this should also be considered in preparing their tanks.

Hobbyists who are obsessed with decorated tanks should think twice to raise Oscars since they tend to be disastrous pets, often rearranging their aquarium, moving rocks and decors around. These are normal Oscar behaviors. Let them do this, for it increases their comfort zone on their surroundings.

Feeding can be an exciting experience since Oscars interact whenever they are fed. They show excitement, swimming eagerly around the tank when they know they will be fed. They eat insects and small crustaceans such as crickets, earthworms, mealworms, and shrimps.

Owners should also understand that Oscars are temperamental. This is the reason why they are considered to have personalities. They show what they are feeling. At one point they can be happy and cheerful, like during feeding, but then they will be moody, retire in one corner or stop eating for a while. Don't be bothered if this happens. This is only a phase and the Oscars will eventually get back to its original jolly selves in time.

Enthusiasts need to be aware that in most cases, Oscars are the non-aggressive types of fish, as compared to other types of cichlids. They show uncommon behavior while inside the tanks, but these are oftentimes ritualistic. They can be seen spreading their gills and opening their mouth wide while facing another fish, performing a tug of war. This is actually testing each other's strength or part of a mating ritual. Oscars may also be observed to charge the wall of their aquarium.

They might just think that their reflections are another fish trying to get in their territories. Oscars, like most cichlids, are territorial. They need to be accustomed to their tank mates for a while before they have given in. That is the reason why in some cases, it is suggested that Oscars should be bred early with another type of fish for the former to be accustomed to it while growing.

Breeders should also take note that in most cases, it is hard to distinguish a male from a female Oscars. The only indication of a female Oscar is when it becomes pregnant and begins to be bulkier. They lay their eggs on a surface of a rock and will rearrange their space to provide a suitable spawning area in their tanks. The eggs hatch after three days.

Other fish in the tank should be taken out once spawning of the female is observed since they are considered threats by the Oscar mothers. It is advised that owners let their Oscars discover their roles as parents by not removing the eggs and allowing them to figure out what to do. They are generally nourishing and protective parents to their fry, eventually providing good nourishment for the infants.

Since Oscar Cichlids, or Oscar Fish, are expected to live up until 15 years, taking care of them is a commitment to an owner should accept. These Oscars would require nourishment, attention, and care. Nevertheless, the Oscars are oftentimes referred to as "river or water dogs" because they somehow behave like dogs, shaking their heads or tails whenever they see their owners.

Oscar Cichlid, also known for their scientific name Astronomus Ocellatus is found in South America and native to Peru, Brazil, French Guiana and Columbia.

Other names include Velvet Cichlid, Marbled Cichlid, and Tiger Oscar. These fish are rapid growers. Reaching an average of 12 inches in length, some have been known to reach a total of 18 inches and weigh 3.5 lbs. Typically dark, orange-ringed spots also known as ocelli are found around the gill area, dorsal fin, and on the sides towards the back end of the fish. Found in a variety of colors, Oscars can range from being mottled, all black or red, marbled, or albino. When becoming combative or territorial, they are known to change color rapidly. Juvenile Oscars have spotted heads and are striped with wavy, orange, and white bands.

Oscar Cichlids are known to be aggressive compared to other members of the cichlid family. Jack Dempsey's, Pacus and Silver Dollar will work well as tank mates as well as other moderately aggressive cichlids. Noted as being intelligent creatures from aquarists alike, they are able to distinguish their owners apart from strangers. Oscars are curious, playful, and popular among hobbyists.

Oscars are carnivores, their diet should consist of fish and insects. Feeder fish, brine shrimp, krill, and crickets are all acceptable food types. High quality prepared foods such as pellets and flakes can also be supplemented with the food types previously mentioned.

A 75-gallon tank per Oscar is the ideal size with a water temperature range of 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit. PH should be maintained between 6.5 and 7.0. Although Oscars are relatively hardy fish, water conditions must be kept clean and maintained. Improper water and tank maintenance can lead to certain diseases that Oscars are susceptible to, such as HITH, (hole in the head) a disease that affects the sensory organs in the lateral lines and face of the fish, thus causing pitting in both areas.

Oscar cichlid breeding

If keeping Oscars, it is necessary to have a large tank as they grow to a considerable size when mature. They are often known as the aggressive fish, but many owners would not agree. If kept with other similar sized fish, they are not usually overly forceful. They learn to recognize their owners and are happy to bound out from the water to feed on the hand and will always come to the front of the tank when the owner is present.

They are rather a messy fish and like to dig up plants and stir up the tank decorations, so heavier items that are more difficult to move are the best if you don't what the tank continually rearranged. While this behavior can be quite entertaining, it can be annoying if the tank is constantly in a mess!

Oscars do not show any discernible differences between the sexes, so getting a breeding pair may be quite difficult.

The best method is to raise a group of individuals together, and if you have six, there is a fair likelihood of getting at least one pair. They will bond for life with their chosen mate.

Breeding Oscars is considered easier than with many other types of fish. Just keep the water very clean and raise the temperature to about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Condition the pair with live foods such as worms, crickets and other insects, smaller fish if possible, and supplement with a flake or pellet food.

When ready, the process of spawning will take place. You notice that they change colors when beginning to court. They will chase each other around the tank, build piles of gravel around the aquarium and finally the female will lay her eggs on a flat rock or piece of slate, which the male then fertilizes. A point to be aware of is that unfortunately a male sometimes may kill a female during the courtship.

The batch of eggs can number up to a thousand. A number of the eggs may be infertile and cotton wool looking fungus will grow on them. The fertilized eggs will be a light orange color. The eggs usually hatch in about three days. The Oscars know which are the bad eggs and will eat them to remove them. They will hatch in about 3 days but are totally helpless at this stage and will live off the egg sac they are attached to. After a few more days, they become free-swimming and will then need to be fed baby brine shrimp.

Oscar fish care

Oscar cichlid of all species has become more and more popular over recent years. The reason for this is that they are really suited to aquarium life. Generally, they feed without any problems, and it is not too difficult to get them to breed. So it is easy to see why they are the aquarium fish of choice for many people. However, this does not mean that you can completely ignore them and they will be ok. That sort of approach will lead to a tank full of dead fish.

An important aspect of Oscar cichlid care is the correct diet for your fish. There needs to be sufficient variety on their diet to ensure that they remain healthy. This variety comes from live food, frozen food, flakes, and pellets. Food should be given in moderation. Oscar cichlid are like other aquarium fish, they will continue to eat when full, so it is important not to overfeed them.

There are many species of Oscar cichlid. Some species are carnivorous and feed on live food almost exclusively. There are herbivores that feed on plants and weeds, and there are omnivores that feed on both. It is important to know what species you have in your tank. You will not have a happy, or indeed healthy, carnivorous fish if you only feed them plant-based flakes.

Water temperature is another key factor in ensuring a healthy aquarium. The correct temperature should be between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to keep the water temperature constant. Oscar cichlid dislikes fluctuations in water temperature. Fortunately, this should not be a problem, as most tank heaters can be set to specific temperatures. It is also important to think about where you position your tank. Do not place it where there could be big changes to the surrounding temperature, such as next to a radiator or window. Sun shining brightly through a window and into the tank can raise the water temperature significantly.

Oscar cichlid prefer alkaline water. This is in the region of 7.5 to 8.5 on the pH level. Alkaline testing kits are freely available at pet suppliers, as are water treatment chemicals. Treat tank water at least two days before introducing your fish to make sure that pH levels have settled down. You should also recheck pH levels after every partial water change.

Your tank should have a filter that is of the correct size and power for the size of your tank. A filter that is not powerful enough will not be able to keep water in your aquarium clean. Apart from affecting the visual appearance of your tank, it will lead to problems with the health of your oscar cichlid and make them more susceptible to disease. An appropriate filter and regular water changes will help to maintain the health of your fish.

You need to try to replicate some Oscar cichlid natural conditions in the wild. These means, for example, putting plants and rocks in your tank. You also need to have a reasonable thickness of gravel at the bottom of the tank. The gravel helps to regulate the water alkaline levels.

Oscar fish buying

There are diversities of Oscar cichlid that are readily found in local pet stores, online, and from a known aquarist or hobbyist. Before buying it is best to do some research to learn more about the Oscar cichlid and then select which ones are great for keeping. It is also reasonable to learn about its diet, characteristics, traits, and breeding.

Where to buy Oscar cichlid are a very important factor. Here are a few tips and guides if buying Oscar cichlid online is a good idea. Or is it better to buy the fish in local stores?

Is it a good choice to buy Oscar cichlid online?

Buying online could be risky. There are various precautions that need to be considered.

• Make sure that the site chosen is a trusted source. There are reviews that may be pondered upon to help hobbyists decide which online site offers a healthy and beautiful colored Oscar cichlid.

• Be certain to emphasize the color and type of Oscar cichlid preferred. Be specific and make sure that they deliver the right one as per specification and preference.

• It may be hard to determine whether the fish ordered is disease free because of the lack of opportunity to see the fish physically and observed if the fishers are fed with the proper food.

• It is important to find out first if the site offers a good return policy before buying the Oscar cichlid online.

• The disadvantage of online purchasing is that there is no chance for the hobbyist to have a personal interaction with the employees who are to care to care for the needs of the fish and maintaining the aquarium tank.

Is buying Oscar cichlid in the local store better?

It may be beneficial and advantageous for the hobbyist to buy Oscar cichlid on local stores but not necessarily. There are also pet stores with employees who basically does not know anything, and I mean nothing at all whatsoever when it comes to the varieties, food, and maintenance of Oscar cichlid. It is as useless as buying one online without the opportunity of physically seeing the fishes. Nonetheless, there are also advantages to buy Oscar cichlid in local pet stores.

• The first advantage is that aquarists have the opportunity to see the fish and observe how the pet store takes care of the fish. Just by looking at the fish, it is easy to determine whether the fish is healthy or not, if it eats vigorously or not and most of all gets to decide whether the fish is worth buying for. At least give some time of observing the fish, within five minutes one can already determine if it is an excellent choice.

• Buying in local stores gives collectors the chance to pick what they really want from the color to type or variety, to the number of Oscar cichlid opted in buying.

• And last, there is no shipping required, thus no chance of putting the fish into risk while in transport.

Making the choice may not be easy especially when one is left with no choice because there are no local stores in their area that carry the cichlid variety so the best choice is to get it online. But to those who have a chance to pick a choice, I suggest that a thorough research and know-how of the local store or online can be trusted. A local store can be as bad as the online store, but there may be much more advantage with local pet stores. Buy Oscar cichlid where the offer is best.

Oscar fish diet

The best cichlid food today has come a long way from the selections open to the public before. Well, I have always been a traditionalist. I believe that organic or natural food should be given to feed my Oscar cichlid. Nevertheless, there is an ongoing trend to develop and sell manufactured and processed feeds for this fish that is prevailing in the market today. There are claims that manufactured feeds are better than the organic food that has been usually the choice of enthusiasts.

But before dwelling on that, let me discuss first the types of eater Oscar cichlid in general. They can be classified based on the selection of food they prefer to eat. Omnivorous Oscar cichlid is those that eat both plants and animals. In their normal environment, they will eat insects, crustaceans, worms, and plants. When placed inside an aquarium, their food should consist of the combination of fish flakes, live food, and vegetables. Some examples of this omnivorous Oscar cichlid are the Petrochromis, Angel Fish and Heros.

The second type is the carnivorous type. These types are those that eat mainly organisms such as insects, insect larvae, shrimp, crustaceans, worms, and fish eggs. But they also have the tendency to eat smaller fishes in the tank, making them perfect predators. Crenicichla, Pike oscar cichlid and Haplochromines are some types of carnivorous Oscar cichlid. Those that mainly rely on the plant for diet are the herbivorous Oscar cichlid. They thrive on algae and other vegetation found in their surroundings. Those living in an aquarium are more inclined to eat flake or pellet plant-based food. Sometimes, these herbivores can accept live food, often are invertebrates, while some feed on algae that rest on rocks and various structures in the water.

During spawning, it is best to provide protein-rich food for your breeding Oscar cichlid. Their fry can be fed with brine shrimp before they mature and dwell on eating bigger foods. You need to make sure that the food your feeding your pets are clean and do not have diseases. That is the reason there is a growing clamor to feed Oscar cichlid with manufactured foods such as pellets and flakes. They can be sure that these are from healthy origins as compared to live food bought in fish stores. There are times that these live foods (such as small fish) are sickly and have diseases, the reason behind why they are being sold as feeds.

The debate on which food is better is something that most breeders consider. The ease in purchasing manufactured and processed feeds is the primary reason for their abundance in the market. One good thing about these types of foods is that they are processed in a way where all the basic needs of the Oscar cichlid are identified and are encapsulated in the flakes, pellets or balls. They readily provide nutrients like Vitamin C, amino acid, spirulina, carotene and other food supplements needed by the fish. However, organic foods are better because they possess the natural nutrients that provide healthier benefits to your pets. Though finding live foods can be harder as compared to the processed types, you are assured that you provide your fish with the same quality and health content as those that are growing in their natural environment.

How to maintain & care of your Cichlid aquarium

2019-11-10T04:41:00.001-08:00

Cichlid aquarium

Part of the Cichlid aquarium, cichlid is a popularly sought after freshwater fish. Cichlidae is the largest vertebrate family with over 1300 species identified. With many cichlid species unidentified yet, there could be over 2000 species around the world.

Cichlids' size could range from one inch to 36 inches. They come in different shapes, too. For instance, certain cichlids are cylindrical while certain others are elongated. Some cichlids are compressed laterally. Though cichlids can survive for a small amount of time in saltwater or brackish water, they are mostly found in freshwater.

Cichlids such as tilapias and tilapia are cultured in parts of Asia as food. Popular cichlid aquarium fishes include angelfish, discus fish, and Oscar fish. Cichlid aquarium is very easy to maintain. They eat just about anything you feed them with and are small. Cichlid game fishes include the cichlid species. One of the most popular sports fishes in South America is the peacock bass. Among anglers, this fish generates $8 million a year.

It is recommended keeping large cichlid aquarium in small groups of a maximum of 12 cichlids in a tank as they are aggressive by nature. Never keep just a pair of them together as one will certainly eat up the other. Fill your cichlid aquarium with enough plants, caves and other hiding places where they can retreat to if a particular cichlid decides to be aggressive.

The cichlid aquarium this cichlid variety is primarily divided into three groups: African cichlid, Central and North American Cichlid, and lastly the South American Cichlids. It is in Africa that a capacious array of cichlids that are quite well known to most aquarists and hobbyists are found specifically in the Great Rift Valley region. It has been the cichlids home since the 1960s in which aquarists started learning about these species. This fishes are endemic in lakes, rivers, and streams.

African cichlids are then divided into four more sub-categories basing on the lake in which they live in. We have the Lake Malawi cichlids, Lake Tanganyikan cichlids, Lake Victoria cichlids, and African cichlids. Dwarf cichlids are sometimes considered as another special group though technically they belong to the African or American cichlid sub-category. As of today, there are more than 3000 known species and are still increasing significantly as more new species are bred.

Mostly, cichlids inhabit waters that are not yet thoroughly researched by scientists and with a higher possibility that some cichlids will become extinct even before scientists can lay their hands on them. This is maybe because of the introduction of new fish food in the African lakes that disturbed the ecosystem.

More cichlid information is that cichlids have adapted an expansive range of habitats which makes their degree of specialization so outstanding. This would also affect the behavior of every variety making some of them harder or more difficult to keep in aquariums compared to other varieties. The mere fact that some of these fishes grew unpredictably huge making them inappropriate and unpractical for aquarium keeps. So far, the largest known cichlid reached the size of 50 - 100 centimeters, quite big, huh?

This particular large species is the Boulengerochromis microlites which is also the opposite of the Dwarf cichlid in the Apistogramma group which is the smallest of the cichlid variety. It only reaches the size no larger than three centimeters making them very well known to aquarists since it does not require very large aquariums. However, dwarf cichlids are more sensitive to care for compared to their counterparts and crowding them in a small cichlid aquarium is not or never a good idea either.

On the contrary to most beliefs, dwarf cichlids are better off in larger aquariums and aquarists may draw a lot of advantages with it too as it is easier for them to maintain water quality. All cichlids share the same anatomic characteristics even if they display different appearance and behavior or temperament. Most fishes have small intestines that make stomach located on the right side but for cichlids, their stomach are at the left side and are equipped with more than one nostril. This also goes true with Damselfishes. Furthermore, there is an intriguing and unique cichlid information about their feature and that is they have teeth in both the upper and lower jaw as well as in the throat.

Cichlid behavior

If we decided to kept cichlid aquarium cichlid behavior is most important to know. Most of the time they very aggressive, considering how territorial this species is.

Temperament during Breeding

If possible, cichlids become even more aggressive during the breeding season to protect their young. There are basically two types of breeders. The first one is open-breeders and would lay their eggs on the substrate, rocks, plants or sands. The second tends to opt for more secure locations like caves, the inside of their mouth or even create holes in the sand to lay the eggs in. Some breeders choose to place their fish in separate tanks during breeding to prevent violent confrontations with other fishes. What is interesting is that the cichlid color changes when they are ready to mate. Specifically, the males develop darker colors during breeding time.

Social interaction

As mentioned, these fish are mostly aggressive, even to their own kind. Alpha males tend to fight other fishes for territory and would not hesitate in swimming after others and biting them in different body parts. This is why some breeders usually heavily stock their tanks with different cichlid types. The technique makes it harder for these fish to maintain dominance and therefore lessen the aggression within the school.

How to Deal with Aggressive Behavior

In order to deal with the aggressive side of cichlids, individuals must first consider exactly what is causing them to behave badly. If it is a territorial war, the most ideal method would be to rearrange the tank designs. This is because the fish use the designs as boundaries to their territory and by rearranging the area; they will become confused and therefore not be too aggressive.

Also, correctly choosing cichlids before buying them would also lessen the possibility of violent behavior. This is because they also operate in an alpha-beta manner. This means that the biggest fish would usually be the school's alpha while the others will be dominated and usually hide in their caves. In order to avoid this, try choosing fish that are roughly the same size.

Paying Attention to Your Fish

If there is any evidence of bullying in the tank, it would be a good idea to separate the fish that is being bullied, especially if they are starting to look weak. Adding more hiding places in the tank would also be helpful as the dominated fish can simply hide whenever the aggressor approaches.

Aggression can be easily pinpointed through frayed fins or fish that are inactive and always close to the substrate. Their colors also change depending on their mood. For example, stressed out cichlids display fainter colors and should, therefore, give special attention until they become happy in the tank again.

Despite their small size, these are very interesting fishes with very active temperaments. When left on their own, there's a strong chance that the dominant one will eventually kill or injure others. This is why every good aquarist takes note of cichlid behavior and performs precautionary measures should it be necessary.

Cichlid breeders are of four types. Breeders' laying their eggs on open surfaces such as logs, leaves, and rocks are the open breeders. Females care for the eggs until they hatch while the male cichlid carefully guards the territory from predators.

Cichlid breeding behavior is that lay eggs in holes, crevices, caves and any other hidden areas. This type of breeder shakes their bodies and flicks their fins to communicate with the young ones.

Eggs are snatched up and kept in the mouth by the ovophile mouth brooders. Examples of this type of cichlids include those found in Victoria, Tanganyika and Malawi lakes. Larvophile mouth brooders lay their eggs in open surfaces and wait till they hatch to take the fry into their mouth and offer protection.

Cichlids can be either polygamous or monogamous, though consistency cannot be found in this type of pairing of specific species. Keeping cichlids will show you that they are great parents taking care of their breed diligently during the process of breeding.

Can I put cichlids in a community tank?

Lots of cichlids species really exist. This is absolutely one enormous family and one fish may have a size of 2 to 100 centimeters. In many cases, the cichlid species that you could breed and raise in a common community are Apistogramma, Kribensis and angelfish. We encourage that you pay close attention to the fact that a cichlid has to never live in the same fish tank with fish of a length lower than five cm. Cichlids usually are actually aggressive when they're breeding, so correct focus on this fact is needed.

Also, it's crucial that you constantly pay the correct focus on the fish genre. It is because there's a big chance that they will start battling when breeding season happens. Thankfully lots of cichlids may have no issue in living along with fish that will be identical in dimensions. Good cases can be given in large tetras, livebearers and barbs.

Small dwarf cichlids are truly fragile and they will not be great for a community tank. In addition, big cichlids are unsafe because they often eat their tank mates. The majority of the cichlid species can attain a size of 20 cm and require huge fish tanks. You could raise African cichlids along with various other cichlids. Always keep in mind that suitable fish tank cleaning is needed coupled with maintenance so that violence levels are minimal. Many issues will appear when the tank is stuffed with lots of species that are contained in the same genus. After they will hybridize you'll find it difficult to make sales. Fundamentally you'll need research and also have to be attentive to everything the fish are performing.

Different cichlids species can also be larger. They are typically suitable if you place them in fish tanks with cichlids displaying equal levels of aggressiveness and size. Whenever pondering about mating partners there are lots of potential problems that can appear. The fish tank becomes territory if a couple exists. Cichlids are not really interested in having a company when they're breeding. However, in different cases, big cichlids accept the existence of peace.

To properly summarize everything, if you would like to bring up cichlids then you need to know that making them live near other fish is at times challenging. You won't need to do several time taking analysis and the main point here is that you need to significantly look at raising cichlids alone if you are considering breeding.

Cichlid food

Food is processed with the help of the lower pharyngeal and upper pharyngeal bones which forms the complex and unique muscle structure in cichlids. This is the reason why they are able to eat a wide food variety making it easy keeping cichlids.

Cichlids predominantly eat plant life and algae being herbivores. Sometimes, they are also found to feed on invertebrates and other small animals. Any organic material is food for Detroiters, such as tilapia. Cichlids can also feed on small animals such as sponges, snails, and even parasites found on catfish.

The best cichlid food today has come a long way from the selections open to the public before. Well, I have always been a traditionalist. I believe that organic or natural food should be given to feed my cichlids. There is an ongoing trend to develop and sell manufactured and processed feeds for this fish that is prevailing in the market today. There are claims that manufactured feeds are better than the organic food that has been usually the choice of enthusiasts.

But before dwelling on that, let me discuss first the types of eater cichlids in general. They can be classified based on the selection of food they prefer to eat. Omnivorous cichlids are those that eat both plants and animals. In their normal environment, they will eat insects, crustaceans, worms and plants. When placed inside an aquarium, their food should consist of the combination of fish flakes, live food and vegetables. Some examples of these omnivorous cichlids are the Petrochromis, Angel Fish and Heros.

The second type is the carnivorous type. These types are those that eat mainly organisms such as insects, insect larvae, shrimp, crustaceans, worms and fish eggs. But they also have the tendency to eat smaller fishes in the tank, making them perfect predators. Crenicichla, Pike cichlids and Haplochromines are some types of carnivorous cichlids. Those that mainly rely on plant for diet are the herbivorous cichlids. They thrive on algae and other vegetation found in their surroundings. Those that are living in an aquarium are more inclined to eat flake or pellet plant-based food. In some cases, these herbivores can accept live food, often are invertebrates, while some feed on algae that rest on rocks and various structures in the water.

During spawning, it is best to provide protein-rich cichlid food for your breeding cichlids. Their fry can be fed with brine shrimp before they mature and dwell on eating bigger foods. You need to make sure that the food your feeding your pets are clean and do not have diseases. That is the reason there is a growing clamor to feed cichlids with manufactured foods such as pellets and flakes. They can be sure that these are from healthy origins as compared to live food bought in fish stores. There are times that these live cichlid food (such as small fish) are sickly and have diseases, the reason behind why they are being sold as feeds.

The debate on which food is better is something that most breeders consider. The ease in purchasing manufactured and processed feeds is the primary reason for their abundance in the market. One good thing about these types of cichlid food is that they are processed in a way where all the basic needs of the cichlids are identified and are encapsulated in the flakes, pellets or balls. They readily provide nutrients like vitamin C, amino acid, spirulina, carotene and other food supplements needed by the fish. However, organic foods are better because they possess the natural nutrients that provide healthier benefits to your pets. Though finding live foods can be harder as compared to the processed types, you are assured that you provide your fish with the same quality and health content like those that are growing in their natural environment.

The best cichlid food is not determined by the availability in the market or its nutritional content. Whatever works for your pet is the most important choice to make. As long as your cichlid heartily eats whatever is served to them, you may continue to do so. In the end, the reason we select the best food is because we care for their welfare. And as long as they keep eating, we are certain than they'll live longer.

Cichilds enjoy hunting for their food, so live food is definitely something you should consider. However, there is a risk of disease or population contamination when introducing live food to the tank. This is why most pet stores and fish owners prefer to keep the diet primarily pellets. A treat of live food every once in a while is the best method, with pellets making up the bulk of the diet.

The benefits of using primarily prepared food for your Cichilds are many, ranging from ease of accessibility to making sure they are receiving all of the nutrition they need. You can use automatic feeders with pellets and it is much easier to instruct a sitter how to feed your fish if you aren't trying to show them how to handle live food.

Two notes about live cichlid food. Many aquarists have noticed that their cichlids sometimes become sick and die after eating bloodworms. The reason for this is that the natural habitat of bloodworms contains substances that are toxic to cichlids and if those toxins have found their way into the bloodworm's body, it can harm your cichlid. Also, in their natural habitat, cichlids like to eat the algae off of rocks. You could let the algae grow on some rocks in your aquarium and the cichlids will probably eat it, which will bring you one step closer to a self-sustaining aquarium.

Because Cichlids are predators, they probably won't respond to pellets at first unless they were raised on them from the beginning. You may have to trick them for a while by using an eyedropper to move the pellet around and make it more interesting. Even then they may not take to the taste. Having other pellet eating fish in the same tank could help your Cichild to learn to eat its new food when it sees other fish gobbling it up.

Different species will learn at different rates, so be patient and consistent. Most Cichilds can go for up to a month without eating, so don't give in and let them have live food for fear of starving them. When they get hungry, they will eat nearly anything. Once you have them trained, cichlid feeding is really easy.

Cichlid species

This is predominantly due to the fact that aquarium owners found them easy to feed, compact size, easy to breed and their ability to care for the young ones even when they are captive.

There are more than 2000 cichlid species around the world. Only a few species that are stunningly beautiful are sought after by aquarium owners. Some owners prefer the most common cichlids that are easy to feed, keep and breed.

Some of the popular and most common cichlids include -

Angelfish (Pterophyllumscalare) - Due to its mild disposition, inquisitive nature, elegant and unique appearance, the angel fish that is predominantly found in the Essequibo, Orinoco and Amazon rivers in South America are one of the most popular among aquarium owners. When it is feed time, these fishes swim eagerly to the surface or swim towards the glass as they are not shy with humans. Angelfish, the most common cichlids sought after by aquarium owners tolerate any water condition and are the easiest to feed.

Oscar fish (Astronotusocellatus) - This fish, considered being a food fish, originates from South America and is also referred to as Oscar, marble cichlid, velvet cichlid or tiger Oscar. Being extremely tough and hardy, Oscar fish can tolerate high toxin levels and any water condition. Oscar fish grows quickly even beyond eighteen inches and eats a variety of foods including flakes, live food and pellets. If you want your Oscar fish to stay bright, colourful, and healthy, it is recommended to feed them with a lot of live food.

Convict cichlid (Archocentrusnigrofasciatus) - This fish is one of the most common cichlids sought after by beginners due to ease of breeding and due to their small size. They are not choosy about the water conditions or food. Convict fishes must be kept in appropriate surroundings. For this, you must recreate their habitat with a lot of artificial caves and rocks. These are used by them for breeding. It is recommended to use external filtration for this cichlid type as they burrow into the substrate.

Discus fish (Symphysodonsppi) - Discus fish is another most common cichlid sought after by aquarium enthusiasts. This cichlid is very sociable and is one of the few varieties that live in large groups in their original habitat. It is recommended to purchase two or more discuss fishes as they love to socialize and their character is enhanced through social interactions. Breeding tanks for discus fishes are very simple. They require many spawning sites, a simple filtration system, and practically no substrate. In order to ensure that the eggs develop in a proper manner, keep the aquarium water soft.

These cichlid species are easy to feed and breed and live for a long period of time. Some Jack Dempsey fishes even live up to ten years. People love to keep Jack Dempsey's due to their vibrant colour. When they are young, these fishes feature a light gray or tan with specks of turquoise. As they grow mature, they turn purple grey with green and blue highlights and golden specks.

Peacock cichlid tank

The peacock cichlid is growing in popularity as a pet. They are traced to Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika. The fish are regarded as being amongst the most beautiful cichlids. And best of all, they are some of the most peaceful of all the cichlid species.

They are best for large aquariums and are great for display due to their colors and a massive size. They are named after the peacock's colorful displays. The peacock cichlid has an elongated and a much higher back than other cichlids where their pelvic and the pectoral fins are longer.

peacock cichlid

The males grow to around 15 centimeters, while females grow up to 4 centimeters. A dark indigo blue characterizes their colors from the lower jaw up to the rear part of the body. Need not to breed the males and females of the peacock cichlid separately.

They breed very well and display a beautiful blend of colors. They are considered members of the free swimming Haplochromis group. In their natural habitat, they are known to form schools. While breeding them, it is advised that you have one or two males interact with a larger number of females. This will encourage breeding and you could have a whole school in no time.

The peacock cichlid is a mild aggression type of fish. Since the fish exhibit aggressive tendencies, you will need to build their aquarium with this in mind. They will increase in aggression when confined into these small peacock cichlid tanks. Taking this in mind, you can be able to inhibit the aggression as well with extra water volume per fish.

You could also increase breeding. The peacock cichlid tank should be around 100 cm with a capacity for up to 55 gallons of water. In the aquarium, you should set up rocks and provide crevices and cave like designs. Remember the fish's original habitat included crevices and caves.

The water needs to be alkaline in nature therefore; it is advised that you use coral sand substrate. Since the water may change rapidly, it is a good idea to have it changed as frequently as possible. A dirty fish tank is not only disturbing to the eye but also unsafe for fish. The aggression of the peacock cichlid is very minimal compared to most Lake Malawi counterparts.

However, they are good in defending their school and will form territories too. You should not place peacock cichlid with smaller fishes since they may look at them as food. They can be put into the same tank with like-sized fishes like catfish. Mbunas should not be chosen as tank-mates for the peacock cichlid.

They tend to be far more aggressive. Peacock cichlids are omnivores. It is a simple task when it comes to feeding since they are not choosy. They can be fed from foods such as bloodworm, mosquito larvae and crustaceans. The water pH level should be a bit above 8 but not exceed 8.2. They need a relatively warm water temperature of between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius.

Cichlid breeding

Cichlids are fascinating fresh-water fishes that offer great potential and are a delight to cichlid breeding and raise especially if you have established a rapport with them. As you breed cichlids, you have a wonderful opportunity to observe their behaviour and how they take care of their young. You will be surprised at the many ways in which they protect their young just like the humans. In other ways, they can be aggressive and detached parents too.

It is highly recommended to do your research and know exactly the type of cichlid you must choose for cichlid breeding.

Open brooders - Open brooders breed on gravel, logs, plant leaves, rocks and other open surfaces. Instances of open brooder cichlids include angelfish, German blue ram and discuss fish. As many as ten thousand eggs are laid by the open brooders. Oxygen supply is enhanced for the young by the mother who continuously fans them while the father diligently guards the territory. It is fun viewing their strange behaviour during reproducing, such as fan digging and leaf turning in certain American and South American species.

Cave brooders - Cichlids that lay their eggs in areas covered by rocks, in flowerpots, plants and caves are the cave brooding variety. Some famous cichlids in this variety include the convict cichlid and Kribensis. Certain cichlids exhibit cichlid breeding behaviour such as laying eggs after digging a pit. Flicking pelvis fins and shaking the body are ways in which free swimming fry and parents communicate with each other in certain cave brooding cichlids.

Mouth brooders - Mouth brooder cichlids protect their fry and eggs from predators by carrying them in their mouth. After laying eggs are incubated in the mouth in certain Ovophile mouth brooders like the African cichlids. Fry may be kept in their mouth for many weeks. Larvophile mouth brooders lay their eggs in the cave or in the open spaces. After hatching of the eggs, they keep the larvae safe in their mouths. Female cichlids are the ones that usually carry their fry in their mouths.

Factors affecting cichlid breeding

There are many factors that affect cichlid breeding as the female cichlid's ability to breed entirely depends on the species, her age and health.

Temperature and water are other factors that affect cichlid breeding. PH level 76 and temperature of the water should be 78-degree Fahrenheit are ideal conditions for cichlid breeding and hatching.

A major role is played by the environment, too in cichlid breeding. For instance, a lot of hiding places around encourages the cave brooders to lay their eggs. If you have cichlids of this variety then it is recommended to fill the aquarium with many hiding spaces.

You may not enjoy success with cichlid breeding right at the onset as inexperienced and young cichlids may be unable to carry eggs full term. It takes time for them to learn how to breed in a proper manner. Breeding is not a mechanical process. Rather, it happens when conditions are conducive and time is right and therefore requires you to be patient.

When in breeding these species reaches its sexual maturity as young as 16 weeks of age but more commonly maturity is in 6 months. Monogamous pairs of convicts spawn in caves or crevices. However, in the wild these fishes tend to dig up caves underneath large rocks. The eggs normally adhere on top or at the side surfaces of the cave.

After the eggs are fertilized it will take at least 72 hours to hatch. At that very moment, the parents are very busy expelling any intruders or threat surrounding the nest's territory. They also use their fins to fan the eggs to provide oxygenated water to the eggs. They do this not only during the day but also at night. With the use of their sense of smell they recognize the presence of the eggs to keep the correct distance of their pelvic fins for fanning. It is also through the parents smell that they detect egg predators that are snooping around the area.

After the eggs have hatched, it requires another 72 hours for the larvae to absorb their yolk sacs and also give them enough time to develop their fins before becoming a free swimming fry. At this stage, fry forage are done in daylight but in areas that are dense and returns to the cage before nightfall. Like other cichlids, convicts also retrieves their young before dusk by scooping three to four fry at a time into their mouth and goes back to the nest where she spits them out.

Determining day and night and anticipating time before reaching night time is an innate time sensing of fish. Even when cichlids are observed in laboratories without the precedence of dimming lights, these fishes continue to retrieve their young before nightfall. At night, the young remains at the bottom of the cave or nest where the parents continue to fan them.

Both cichlid convict parents are aggressively active in guarding their fry from potential predators. They also have a behavior that readily assists young in feeding like moving leaves or fin digging. Caring of eggs, larvae, or juveniles in the wild would last about four to six weeks. Breeding usually happens only once per season of most females.

Females who breed in aquariums can do it several times in a year with short intervals approximately 12 - 13 days between broods. This is true, of course when rocks or closely similar surfaces are available for them to lay their eggs on.

Convicts are easy to maintain and breed in aquariums. Keep in mind that they are aggressively territorial during the breeding period and are best kept alone in adequate sized aquariums. Their relative size and easy breeding makes the convict cichlid ideal for novices as well as experienced aquarists for aquarium care.

African cichlids

African cichlids are unique in the sense their stunningly colourful patterns cannot be found in any other fresh-water fishes. Their attractive colours make them the most sought after fishes by enthusiasts.

African cichlids are extremely intelligent and they are known for their fascinating social behaviour. Cichlids in the tank respond to passersby by getting active. They swim in swarms and are a delight to feed as they consume whatever is given to them.

These fascinating creatures employ interesting techniques for hunting. N. Livingstonii attracts its prey by posing dead on the sand. When small fishes come closer, it jumps up to catch them.

These fishes are easy to maintain and breed why they are popular pets of African cichid lovers. Scientists and hobbyists are fascinated by these creatures' proliferation and their ability to adapt to captivity. Being hardy by nature, African cichlids can survive under any environmental conditions and are therefore easy to maintain. This is one of the reasons why beginners choose them as pets.

For thousands of years a kind of African cichlid the Tilapia has been an important food source. Right from 2500 BC, Tilapia has been farmed in Egypt according to hieroglyphics. Though Egyptians kept tilapia in aquariums, they were mostly eaten as they are not colourful as compared to other cichlids.

Eggs and young ones are carried by the female African cichlids in their mouths. Depending on the species type, the eggs are carried and nurtured by the females in the mouth after being fertilized by the male. This process is known as mouth brooding and it lasts anywhere between three and 31 days.

During mouth brooding, no food is eaten by the mother. It is interesting to note the motherly love on display even after the young ones are released. When in danger, these little ones are protected by the mother who takes them back into her mouth.

Protective African cichlids parents take great care of their little ones even if they are a part of crowded communities.

Most freshwater fishes do not grow larger than two or three inches. African cichlids however are known to grow up to six inches. Their life span is between four and ten years and some even life for fifteen years.

As compared to other fish types, this species is found to be extremely aggressive, territorial and voracious. I highly recommend it to keep African cichlids with other fishes of their size to avoid any aggressive behaviour. They tend to stick to their own kind in groups when in their wild habitat. Mature cichlids even guard their territory. They are not known to be welcoming or hospitable and do not get along with any other fishes including different species cichlids.

Buy cichlid

It is not an easy preposition buying any kind of pet, especially buying cichlids. Those who wish to keep them as pets must be sure about their decision and commitment towards taking care of them as it takes a lot of energy, effort, time and devotion. It is recommended not to buy any pets if you feel that you are not wholeheartedly inclined towards it. This way, you will waste money as well as harm the animal.

If you are planning on buying cichlids, here are a few tips.

Before you buy cichlids, be sure to learn all about them by conducting a thorough research. Find out what are their specific needs and analyze to determine if you will be able to fulfil requirements of taking care of them well. Most of the time, people reach out for pets without knowing the kind of effort that goes into caring for them and the poor animals end up ill or dead.

Choose trusted sources to gain knowledge on them. You can take the help of your friends and acquaintances who already own cichlids. Seek them out and ask them for advice on the best source of cichlids and what goes into taking care of them. There are many places where you can find cichlids including a cichlid breeder, a local pet shop and online. It is important to choose a reliable seller who will sell you the healthiest cichlids and who will be willing to replace them if anything should go wrong.

If possible, buy cichlid from a local source as this will ensure you can visit the store in person to observe the fish before purchasing them. This will also give you an idea of what exactly you are getting into. Online shops are the best bet for those looking for special cichlid breeds.

Check the cichlids you wish to purchase carefully. See if they are alert and active and observe if they tilt while swimming or swim straight. Cichlids that are healthy and active swim laterally. Observe to see if they swim robustly or tend to stick to the surface struggle to breathe. Observe if there are red spots on their bodies and if they have fins that are flat. Fins must not be ragged or ripped as this is not a healthy sign. If you find cichlids exhibiting any of the above symptoms, you know that this is the wrong place to purchase them.

Do not hesitate to ask questions and clarify any doubts you may have when you are buying cichlids. Apart from other resources, the best source to gain knowledge from is people who have firsthand experienced in breeding cichlids. Only by asking questions can you learn enough to discriminate and choose the best cichlids.

Be sure to ask about the return policy of the store. If your cichlids fall sick the moment you take them home, you must be in a position to return them or exchange them for healthier cichlids.

It is highly recommended not to take hasty decisions. Take enough time to learn about the pet before you make the purchase. Observe cichlids for some time and research well on how to take care of them. It is not easy caring for fish.

Talk to experts and take an informed decision. If you decide on buy cichlids, you must make a commitment to take good care of them and see them all the way through.

Cichlid care

Cichlids of all species have become more and more popular over recent years.

An important aspect of cichlid care is the correct diet for your fish. There needs to be sufficient variety on their diet to ensure that they remain healthy. This variety comes from live food, frozen food, flakes and pellets. Food should be given in moderation. Cichlids are like other aquarium fish, they will continue to eat when full, so it is important not to overfeed them.

There are many species of cichlids. Some species are carnivorous and feed on live food almost only. There are herbivores that feed on plants and weeds, and there are omnivores that feed on both. It is important to know what species you have in your tank. You will not have a happy, or indeed healthy, carnivorous fish if you only feed them plant based flakes.

Water temperature is another key factor in ensuring a healthy aquarium. The correct temperature should be between 74 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. It is important to keep the water temperature constant. Cichlids do not like fluctuations in water temperature.

Cichlids prefer alkaline water. This is near 7.5 to 8.5 on the pH level.

A filter that is not powerful enough cannot keep water in your aquarium clean. Apart from affecting the visual appearance of your tank, it will lead to problems with the health of your cichlids and makes them more susceptible to disease. An appropriate filter and regular water changes will help to maintain the health of your fish.

You need extra cichlid care try to replicate some of the cichlids natural conditions in the wild. These means, for example, putting plants and rocks in your tank. You also need to have a reasonable thickness of gravel in the bottom of the tank. The gravel helps to regulate the water alkaline levels.

If you have chosen cichlids for your fish tank, you may well know their aggressive nature. Caring for cichlids can be challenging unless you know how to handle the situations that can arise with these fish. To counteract their type of personality, there are things you can do that will bring more harmony to your aquarium.

Male cichlids can show their aggression when trying to mate with a female. If you don't have the right ratio of males to females in your tank, it may cause the males to be more competitive. This can lead to a dominant male constantly fighting and chasing other males. Also, it may cause the persistent chasing of a designated female, occasionally to the point of its demise.

To lessen the rivalry, you will need to make sure that there is at least a 3:1 ratio between females and males. This will give the males more than one female to focus on. To distinguish between males and females of the cichlid species, you need to watch their behavior as they mature. Reducing the number of males in your tank should decrease the conflict that can occur between these fish.

You may find that not all cichlids have the same temperament. Some will be more aggressive than others. Some will only attack their own kind, while others will go after any fish. When you choose fish for your tank, try to pick species that have the same disposition. This will put them on even ground if fighting should occur.

Because of their unique environmental requirements, cichlids need a fish tank that has specific mineral content, temperature, and pH levels. When choosing your fish, you will want to choose either African cichlids or South American. This is because they both come from different surroundings; Therefore, they require different conditions. Even the five different lakes, where African cichlids originate, have distinctive qualities. Cichlids care can very rewarding so do some research before purchasing your fish to make things easier for you in the long run.

How to setup a Saltwater aquarium

2019-11-08T03:06:00.000-08:00

Saltwater aquarium

STEP 1: The basic hardware of the saltwater aquarium tank and stand.

If your budget allows, the local fish store (LFS) carries large a selection of tanks and stands. If like many of us you are on a tight budget, you can start browsing Craigslist for used items. With a little elbow grease, you can lower your budget considerably. It is strongly suggested that you choose the largest tank possible for your first tank as smaller tanks allow very little room for mistakes. Click here to learn how easy it is to

STEP 2: Choose the location.

Choosing a location for your tank is an important step because an established aquarium is very difficult to move. Choose a location that is not exposed to natural sunlight, avoid heavy traffic areas, do not place the tank too close to the source of heat or drafty areas.

STEP 3: Choose your lighting and filtration.

There are several lighting options but the most common beginner lighting fixtures include Power compacts (PC). You can grow a variety of corals under PC's. If you decide to advance in the hobby and graduate to SPS coral, then your lighting will have to be upgraded to T5's, Halides, or LED's.

Hang on back (HOB) filters, canister filters, and bio-balls are not recommended to reef tanks as they become nitrate factories and complete with your display tank (DT).

Protein skimmers are the ideal filtration method for saltwater aquarium tanks.

The main filter in a reef tank is your reef tank itself. Live rock (LR), refugium, Live sand (LS), and your corals all help to break down nitrates.

Which lighting is best for you?

STEP 4: Water flow and Heaters. Your corals will need water movement. The amount of water movement requirement varies for each species. Powerheads are the ideal product for producing a current inside the tank.

Since most of our decorative marine fish come from the tropics, you will need to heat the water using aquarium heaters.

STEP 5: RO/DI water, Saltwater, Sand, & Live rock. RO/DI water has become a standard in the marine hobby. Unless you live in an area that has excellent tap water, it is highly recommended that you use RO water. Making your own saltwater is easy, simply mix aquarium salt with fresh water and use a hydrometer or refractometer (recommended) to measure the salinity.

Live rock is a very interesting part of this hobby. This is the rock that has been in the ocean for ages and has become saturated with marine life. How much LR do you need? A good starting point is 1.5 pounds of rock for each gallon of water. LR gets very expensive so a good alternative is a base rock. Base rock is a rock that was once LR but may have been out of the ocean for centuries. You can use Base rock, which is much cheaper than LR, and seed it with a piece of LR and in a few months, the base rock becomes LR.

Live sand is another interesting feature of saltwater aquarium tanks. The clean white sand is the reason for mane aquatints becoming attracted to this hobby in the first place. Some reef keepers choose to have bare bottom tank (BB) to assist in keeping a cleaner tank.

STEP 6) Once you have filled your new tank with Saltwater (SW), sand, LR, and heated the water, you are ready to begin cycling the tank. Is my tank cycled?

STEP 7) After your tank is cycled, you are ready for suitable first fish, beginner corals, and a Clean-up Crew.

Marine tank

Fancy a slice of underwater nature in your home marine tank? Awed by the beautiful and lively fishes in "Finding Nemo", such as the Blue Tang and clownfish? An increasing number of hobbyists are discovering the charm and pleasure of keeping a saltwater aquarium. This allows them to understand and relate to nature in a closer way, a very real reward indeed.

Visualize replicating one of Earth's astounding natural environments -- the coral reef -- right in your own home. You can now set up and keep a tank complete with saltwater fishes, corals and landscaping. Aquarium fish care that uses new methods helps to make long-term maintenance easy and ensure the marine inhabitants live healthy and longer.

Keeping saltwater fishes in a home aquarium has been viewed as challenging. Specialized equipment is required, which makes such a marine tank more expensive to keep; still, having this does not guarantee these pricey marine fishes will survive.

Upkeep of the tanks can be bothersome as algae need to be cleaned off frequently, not to mention the periodic cleaning of the under gravel filter and sand. It is easy to understand why many hobbyists tend to give up after a while.

The trick for a beginner to a marine tank is to begin with a system that is designed for the long haul and is "self-adjusting". Stick to beginner fish species and simpler methods with the help of suitable equipment.

A long-term commitment is required as constant care of the aquarium is demanded, with the same level of duty of keeping a live pet such as a cat or dog. If the hobbyist is not prepared, he or she should consider keeping a freshwater aquarium instead.

Much has been learned about the biological processes of nature's reefs and newer aquarium equipment are now available to re-create such an environment. For example, the use of live rock as the main biological filter is one step in this direction, replacing more entrenched methods that use under-gravel filters.

Another is the use of vigorous water circulation, which helps to distribute both good and bad elements across the tank. Thus, over-concentration at any one area is avoided, creating an environment resembling the ocean where there are chemical uniformity and great stability.

Patience is essential to establish the beautiful marine tank that one so desires with these colorful aquatic creatures. It will probably take half a year to stabilize a new tank and another half for it to be ready for the long haul.

Rushing will not help here as overnight results are hardly attainable by a beginner, even with the expense. The sight of these beautiful saltwater fishes can be the main motivation to keep the hobbyist on track as the home aquarium evolves and takes shape with time and experience.

The success of setting up a healthy and vibrant home marine tank can be very rewarding and exciting. For anyone willing to commit time, energy, money and some creativity, this hobby can provide relief from stress and satisfaction from a tank well kept.

For a lot of hobbyists, keeping a marine aquarium often becomes a life-long passion. Without a doubt, a beautiful saltwater tank is a sight to behold, with all those brightly colored fishes darting around in their beautiful reef environment.

And who knows, keeping a marine tank might even motivate hobbyists to go even closer to nature by taking up snorkeling or diving. Perhaps nothing beats seeing marine fishes in their natural environment and touching the reef corals.

Coral reef

Having your own coral reef is a dream shared by many aquarists. For a long time, it used to be very difficult to grow and maintain coral reefs in aquariums because of the lack of knowledge about them and their needs to survive in a saltwater aquarium.

A coral reef system is complex and requires the right components and proper maintenance. The good thing is that even though some corals are still very difficult to grow and maintain, a wide range of corals are now easy to grow even for beginners.

If you're a beginner or average aquarist when picking corals for your saltwater aquarium, you might want to go with soft corals because they are easier to take care of.

Below are 6 different types of soft corals:

Cladiella Corals: Cauliflower, Finger Leather and Colt Coral. They adapt very well and do best with moderate lightening and water movement.

Palythoa Corals: Button Polyps and Sea Mat. Can grow very fast under bright lightening (might overgrow your other corals). Prefer rapid water movement. Warning: Handle them with gloves to protect yourself from their toxin (the palytoxin).

Sarcophyton Corals: Leather, Mushroom Leather, Toadstool, Toadstool Mushroom and Trough Coral. Adapt to all lightening levels. Moderate water movement is preferred to prevent parasites on their surface.

Discosoma Corals: Disc Anemones, Mushroom and Mushroom Corals. Low light is preferable. Active feeders (small fishes but also detritus and uneaten food).

Zoanthus Corals: Button Polyps, Zoanthid and Sea Mat. Bright light is preferred as they feed on zooxanthellae along with algae, D.O.C.'s and bacteria. Warning: Use gloves to handle them (because of the palytoxin).

As many corals can grow in your saltwater aquarium. This is just a short selection so what you have to do is research the specific needs of the different corals you're interested in and make sure they can grow in the same aquarium. With the right light, water movement and nutriments, you'll have a beautiful coral reef system!

Every hobbyists, either advanced or beginners, wants the best components in their aquarium to grow and maintain their corals in the best environment possible. That is why having a very high-quality saltwater aquarium can make a difference. But the hard part about purchasing an aquarium to grow corals is that many different components are needed and selecting and installing them can be a daunting task.

How to setup a saltwater tank

The marine fish tank setup is not as complex as most websites make it out to be. However, you need to understand what you are doing; otherwise, you might risk the life of your fish and corals. Very subtle changes in water temperature/salt saturation and lighting saturate over time and lead to drastic effects. That being said, everyone can successfully have a marine fish tank set up in a couple of days if they follow certain principles.

Live stones are a part of the marine fish tank, which a lot of people miss. It is simply stone from the natural habitat of the fish, and it contains algae and bacteria which reduce toxins in the water and are responsible for the oxygen/carbon dioxide balance in the tank. This is however, not a secret and is a basic principle of the marine tank setup.

One of the most complex aspects is water. There are various cheap tests that can be used to determine water's nitrate/ammonia content, as well as phosphate levels. These are very subtle but important. The nitrogen cycle refers to how well toxins are being broken down by the algae. The main difficulty is this: in seas and oceans, the large volume of water (trillions of cubic feet) assures that the balance of toxins stays virtually the same, as does the oxygen content and salt content. When you try to compact this into less than a single cubic meter of water, problems occur. That's why you need a filtration system and a proper balance of living organisms. Also, the temperature difference in deep water is almost nonexistent, whereas in a fish tank it is quickly affected by the air temperature. That's why a heater is added to assure that the temperature stays the same.

Can it really be done?

All the above may sound complex, but is in fact very simple and all of these aspects are usually automatically covered by a ready to buy marine fish tank setup. However, you will notice that in pictures, the water tanks look "alive" and with bright colors. That is not due to the photography, but due to certain secret aspects of the system, which a few people know. Little changes in the water can have a big impact on the organisms, since they are in the water constantly, and their metabolism is affected by that. But fortunately, you can learn all about this and replicate the same results at home, without having to rely on an expensive marine fish tank setup or anything like that.

Setting up a marine aquarium is fairly easy, but newbies often make mistakes, which causes the inhabitants of the tank to die. These mistakes are usually little, but their effect compounds with time, and after a month or two, the toxins build up. Combining the right fish and corals is helpful and can achieve the perfect oxygen/carbon dioxide levels.

How to set up a saltwater tank includes few basic components, and it is very difficult to do something wrong here. What most people do wrong is the combination of organisms/water type or salt levels. As water evaporates, the salt becomes more. Even slightly higher concentrations can be fatal to the fish. Also, improper oxygen balance can interrupt the normal processes of toxic decay and over time cause problems.

People sometimes notice that the aquarium in pictures is a lot more colorful and alive than their own. They usually contribute this to photography, but in fact, this can be achieved, provided that you know what to do. There are principles to be followed, and the majority of people, including people in the pet store, do not know them very well. That's why 90% of people who get a marine aquarium or try to build one will fail about a month in. It's not because they forget to feed the fish, it's because they do not balance the environment properly. In order to achieve balance, you need proper salt levels, a combination of corals/fish and constant temperature. All of these sounds too complex to achieve, but it is fairly simple. Using a carbon filter and a heater unit will solve most of the problems, depending on the climate you live in.

It is important to do everything right, otherwise, you might sacrifice expensive species of fish and coral. That's why it is good to educate yourself and know all the secrets of setting up a marine fish aquarium. Some people make their own aquarium and buy all the corals and fish separately. That is more interesting than buying an already made one, but people often do that too. You must decide what suits you best. The joy that comes from making your own aquarium is worth it, but you need to educate yourself more if you want to do that. Also, there is no guarantee that ready fish aquariums will have the proper setup. They are also much more expensive than buying everything separately.

The marine aquarium supplies include a glass water tank, filtration equipment for filtering the salts, rock and substrate, saltwater, thermometer, air pumps, air stones, test kits, hydrometers, maintenance tools as well as skimmers. To establish a marine aquarium at your home, you can take help from various companies offering their services through the web. A little browsing will help you in finding numerous firms that supply various equipment required for the efficient functioning of the saltwater tank.

Besides, a protein skimmer is an essential requirement of a saltwater tank. The skimmer helps in removing the dissolved waste and thus keeps the water clean. Besides, a few kinds of saltwater tanks, such as fish only and soft coral reef tanks do not require protein skimmer. All other types of tanks require protein skimmers to keep the water clean. In addition, high water circulation is very important in an aquarium as this promotes the increase in oxygen levels in the aquarium. Low oxygen level degrades the health of corals in the water.

Different kinds of protein skimmers are available in the market. Numerous companies like Reef Octopus, Tunze and Ecotech Marine offer these skimmers. Amongst these, the efficiency of Tunze skimmers makes them very popular in the marine fish breeder's community. Besides, lighting also plays an important role in the marine aquaculture. Though most of the aquariums come with already fixed lights, you can still go for other aqua illumination instruments.

Ledsare commonly used for aqua illumination needs. Besides saving energy, the light also provides the perfect growth environment for numerous varieties of corals and many kinds of fish. In addition, SOL Blue LED promotes the growth of marine plants, which form an integral part of every aquarium. Mermaid's fan, Maiden's hair, Halimeda and shaving brush plants are most commonly grown in a saltwater aquarium. The aqua illumination helps in the growth of these plants.

Saltwater nitrogen cycle

Why is waste harmful? The answer is the saltwater nitrogen cycle. The decomposition of waste products in the aquarium produces ammonia, which is highly poisonous to the fish in it. The cycle continues as the ammonia is oxidized by bacteria into less toxic, but still harmful, nitrites, which are in turn oxidized into much less toxic nitrates. A canister filter provides the means for biological filtration. The sponges in the filter provide a much greater surface area for the bacteria to colonize and thrive. Also, it is important to avoid cleaning the filter media with tap/chlorinated water or any soap or detergent as these will kill the bacteria and have a harmful effect on the fish.

Plastic "bio balls" and ceramic tubes are commonly used alternative aquarium filtration media used instead of, or together with, sponges for the purposes of biological filtration. However, opinion seems divided on the effectiveness of such a medium in a canister filter. My local aquatic store owner commented that my original set-up using sponges and ceramic tubes was "a nitrate factory" and he advised removing both from the canister filter and replacing them with broken up the live rock with a layer of filter wool at the top of the canister providing mechanical filtration. He advised changing the filter wool twice weekly. I followed his advice, and this produced a slight reduction in nitrate levels but possibly only because of the twice-weekly removal of solid waste from the canister rather than my previous weekly routine of cleaning the sponges.

In this aquarium system, unlike the ocean, the nitrogen cycle ends with the production of nitrates. To prevent the nitrate level building up to a harmful level, it is necessary to make regular partial water changes to replace the 'nitrate-rich' water with uncontaminated water. Again, recommendations vary on the amount and frequency of water changes. My routine included a 25% change every month, but I know there are many advocates of smaller, more frequent changes.

Water can be removed from the aquarium using a plastic jug or a bucket or a combined siphon/gravel cleaner. This device is designed to remove wastes and uneaten food from the bottom of the tank while the water is being siphoned off but the cleaning section will not work on a sandy substrate as it is too fine and will be siphoned off too. Larger pieces of solid waste, such as a dead fish or an uneaten muscle, can be removed by hand or by netting.

Protein skimmer

There are lots of protein skimmer on the market, and it can become hard to make your choice. There is a pretty huge skimmer that can handle more than a thousand gallons of water. But you can have a small one for a 10 gallons aquarium.

Look through the specifications of the skimmer. You need to choose one that can handle twice the water for your tank, If your aquarium is 20 gallons, pick the skimmer that can handle a 40 gallons tank. This is an important cause you don't want to finally have a skimmer that can't handle the life in your tank.

There are 3 types of skimmers: hang on, in-sump, and in-tank. If you plan to make a big tank and you have a sump under it, go for a big skimmer that can fit in the sump. That way you won't see it in and around your tank. The hang-on skimmer is a great choice if you don't have a sump. There is skimmer that fits inside your tank, but you always see it and it's not the nicest display.

A protein skimmer is the filtration system for saltwater tanks. You don't need any other filtration system. The only other filtration system that is allowed is a sump or a hang-on tank sump where you use special algae to purify the water.

Chiller for aquarium

Most people who have owned or do own a fish tank have heard of aquarium heaters, these are used mainly to help regulate the temperature in the fish tank especially if you live in a colder climate or during the winter months. But a chiller for aquarium is similar in that it to regulates the temperature of the tank but it used for those owners whom live in the warmer climates to help cool the water down. With owning a fish tank, you know how crucial regulating the temperature of your fish tank is to the success of your fish's lives. So one way you can do this is both with a heater or a chiller depending on your climate and where you live.

How an aquarium chiller works is that it brings in the warmer water that in your tank into the aquarium chiller and it cools it by transferring the heat and making the water cooler for the fish. Here are a few things to take into consideration while looking for a chiller for an aquarium.

The Proper Temperature for Your Fish

As a proper fish owner, know what the ideal living conditions are for your fish, meaning the temperature of the water. Unfortunately, many people do not know this part and should consult their local pet store for more information. Knowing the proper water temperature for your climate and your breed of fish is so important.

Finding The Temperature Range in Chill:

Take the temperature of your tank water as it then takes this number and subtracts it from what the water temperature should be in the tank. This number is what you need to decide how to set your aquarium chiller.

Efficiency

Just like with any appliance or anything you plug into your walls you want to make sure the aquarium chiller you choose is energy efficient as you will use this often. Be sure to discuss this topic with your pet store staff members.

Just remember if you live in an area that tends to be on the warmer side you may need to invest in an aquarium chiller if you are not sure if you need one call or stop by your local pet store and consult an expert. They will determine based on your location, size of your tank, and the breed of fish you have if an aquarium chiller is necessary.

Protein skimmer for aquarium

Protein skimmers, also known as foam fractionators, are very effective, highly recommended filters for any central water system. It amazed me the first time I saw the waste in the collection cup of a protein skimmer -a rich, thick, dark brown goop extracted from the clear aquarium water. No filter pad on the market removes junk like that. Protein skimming for an aquarium is a natural occurrence that anyone who has ever strolled a beach on a windy day or walked along a rocky shoreline has observed. The brown foam that swirls around in small eddies results from protein skimming on a large scale. A well-designed protein skimmer is worth its weight in gold but be sure to choose a reliable model rated for the amount of water in your system.

There are many types of protein skimmers available to marine aquarists: co-current, counter-current, venturi, down-draft, and many more added each year. Counter-current, venturi and downdraft models are superior to co-current models.

A counter-current protein skimmer pumps water into the top of a contact chamber through a reaction chamber and exits at the bottom. Fine bubbles, created with a wooden air diffuser, rise from the bottom of the contact chamber. The bubbles traveling up and the water traveling down cause the water to swirl violently in the chamber. Organic molecules, amino acids, fatty acids and a variety of other pollutants adhere to the surface of the tiny bubbles and congregate at the top of the contact chamber forming a stable layer of foam. When this layer of foam grows large enough, it pushes its way up a riser tube, where it eventually falls out into a collection cup. Here, the foam dissipates and anything that was adhering to the surface fell off. The longer the contact time between the water and the bubbles the more waste will be created.

Venturi protein skimmers for aquarium are operated with one inlet. A water pump is fitted with a venturi valve that feeds air into the rushing water. A mass of tiny bubbles is constantly fed into the reaction chamber. Properly designed venturi protein skimmers are an ideal choice for central systems. They are often built wider rather than higher, conserving space. The venturi valve rarely needs maintenance compared to the monthly replacement of wooden air diffusers in counter-current models and they allow a better turnover rate.

Saltwater fish selection

For that experienced aquarist, a saltwater aquarium may still be a challenging job to maintain it. One of the things that you have to do right is to pick the perfect fish. The right decision with the fish will increase your chances of being successful with this endeavor.

In a saltwater aquarium, your saltwater fish selection should be proper. The species that thrive in saltwater are fishes that can withstand high salinity levels. These fishes can easily breathe in seawater.

These species are not fit for freshwater. In fact, they can die if you do not monitor the salinity level and it drops to critical levels. These marine fishes may not adapt to stress. This can lead to their death.

You can choose from the more than 22,000 species of saltwater aquarium fishes. There are so many choices that you will definitely find the one for your liking. With marine livestock, you can choose the fish that matches your style, even your favorite colors.

But even with this huge number of choices, you have to take note that saltwater fishes are quite sensitive. These species are very susceptible to changes in the environment. It is the role of the aquarium owner to learn how to keep the environment of the fishes as stable as possible.

When buying the fish, it is much recommended that you get them from expert breeders. This assures you that you have the fish in its best condition. This will almost guarantee higher chances of survival.

Also, inquire from your suppliers if the fishes have been housed for over two weeks in their aquarium environment. Two weeks is the minimum requirement for these fishes to finally adjust to the aquarium. Most of these fishes are sourced from the ocean and they need to acclimatize to their new condition. Unhealthy fishes that cannot adapt with the new environment will usually not survive. Your proper saltwater fish selection will enhance the looks of the aquarium tank.

What are some known species to consider? Aquarists prefer to grow reels, bonefish, rods, marlin, and sailfish. Though these may not be easy to maintain, seeing them grow is such a vision to watch.

In conclusion, choosing the ideal fish species is critical to your success as an aquarist. Choose the right fishes and ask for expert advice on how to maintain them. When they get sick, do not panic and always ask for the proper medications from the key persons in your area.

Saltwater aquarium water changes

While keeping a marine aquarium, you will have to learn to do saltwater aquarium water changes, and while this might seem like a very simple task of just taking water out and adding more back in, it is quite a bit more complicated when it comes to saltwater aquariums. The first thing to do is to purchase two buckets that are the same size so you can avoid confusion when adding water in and removing it from your tank. It is important that these buckets be new, that way there is no contamination between the buckets and your tank. You need to then mark the buckets with "dirty water" and "new or clean water."

Now, since you have a saltwater tank, mix the salt. Using an aquarium pump, you put the correct amount of salt in the bucket. Then place a heater in it along with a thermometer, let this mix for no less than 12 hours. Now you have to remove some water for your tank, begin siphoning it out into the dirty water bucket, and dispose of it. Now you have to add the new clean water back into the tank. This can be challenging if you are using paint buckets, but it can be done. Attach a hose to the pump that you used for mixing and allow it to flow into your tank. When you reach the end of your bucket, you can just directly add it to you a tank and remove the pump. Add water until you reach the designated water line in your tank and make sure that you turn all of your equipment back on.

Discus fish famous to as “King of the Aquarium”

2019-11-05T09:26:00.000-08:00

Discus fish

The popularity of the discus fish has started early in the 1920s it has been considered as the king and queen of the ocean for so long and is well-loved because of the shape and bright patterns and colors. Aside from that, it is an interactive fish that really connects with the owners if treated properly.

There is a need to know more discus fish information if you are deciding to breed it. Remember that even though they have been domesticated for so long, these are still exotic fishes once and they will require care and attention to thrive. Since the discus is sociable, you would need to keep them in groups, you cannot possibly choose to just take care of one because this will make them lonely and their health could suffer because of that due to stress.

Freshwater discus fish are very intelligent species and have very distinct personalities. They are quick to recognize their caretakers. This makes them the perfect pets to have at home. They display affection and display great excitement every time you come near to the fish tank. These fish also love being hand-fed regularly. However, avoiding putting out excess feed for these fish can harm their health and reduce their life.

Discus fish tank size

Your discus fish will need an aquarium where they will happily live. Unless you have a river running through your property, your fish tank or the aquarium will be your discus fish dwelling throughout its lifetime. So you will have to provide it with an environment that will be perfect for mating along with living an existence which it is used to.

You need to be aware nevertheless, there exist particular aquarium specifications for a certain variety of fish. With discus, there are two main problems, and they are depth and size. The depth and the volume of the aquarium will be based not merely on the size of the fish, but also on the swimming habits of the discus. A deep container is usually the go, eighteen inches would most likely be all you need. With the amount of water, most discus gurus would likely concur that for each and every discus, ten gallons will be required.

To maximize the surface area, a rectangle-shaped tank is generally advisable. When purchasing a tank, the surface area is probably the most crucial factor. The surface area expanse is critical since this is the spot that the breathable oxygen and co2 exchanges. So if you possess 3 or 4 pairs of discus, a seventy five-gallon container would be sufficient. If you can, consider adding a third-party filter, especially if you have a very big fish tank, as this can be able to assist in improving the oxygenation and the purification of the container.

The need for a big fish tank is not simply just because they will grow big, but also because they will grow big quickly. If you decide upon choosing a smaller tank now and just upgrading, later on, this will be futile. A compact container may basically stunt their growth and can stress them out. But in addition, in the event the aquarium is simply too large, your little discus could become excessively skittish and hurt themselves.

If you possibly can afford to, getting a couple of tanks is usually advisable, specifically if you want to reproduce your discus down the road. You should use the smaller tank while your discus is much younger, as well as at a later date as a mating fish tank.

Prior to going out and purchasing a discus at your local pet retailer, you'll want to bear in mind discus are extremely vulnerable in relation to water conditions and food standards. Discus is usually costly and you would not want to purchase one if you do not understand how to take care of it. Thus, below are a few of the fundamental fish care suggestions that you should adhere to that will allow you to adequately care for discus within your tank.

To start with, lots of people are convinced discus fish are only for advanced fish keepers. They couldn't be more wrong. Looking after discus is not hard if you only understand how to do it the right way. It can be difficult initially but as you get a lot more knowledgeable, everything will become routine and easy to perform.

The tank dimension is one of the most essential things that you should contemplate. Discus thrives in deep water. Consequently, you may want to get yourself a big aquarium that's equally wide as well as deep. Discus can mature to 6 or even 7 inches. Now, as you will need to have a minimum of six discus fish assembled in the aquarium tank, you will definitely have to have a larger container.

Although it is possible for one to maintain discus in fish tanks which are bare, it is most effective for you to put in plants, drift timber, as well as stones inside the aquarium. All of these do not only make the container appear a lot better but these things will serve as concealing spots for discus and it'll also help to keep them contented.

Discus are easily terrified and if they have got nowhere to hide, they'll get stressed very easily and can quite possibly damage themselves from dashing around the container and hitting the glass.

Discus fish aquarium

A well established and appropriately taken care of an aquarium is actually an incredible thing to see, seeing those graceful and stunningly gorgeous discus fish move through the water one could quickly understand how they are known as the kings of the aquarium. If you are showing such excellent fish, you will need to take care of them properly in order to maintain their wonder and splendid colorings; For that reason, taking the time to create their aquarium the right way is essential.

Aquarium Size

Discus proper in sizeable aquariums with lots of space to swim about, so your aquarium needs to be about 10-15 gallons per adult discus fish. Therefore, a 55-gallon fish tank is the minimum size for 6 full-grown discus (I know it should be 60, however, 55 gallons is a common size for fish tanks).

Placement

These friendly but shy fish want a tranquil daily life; they are accustomed to clean water and dark spacious surroundings to swim in. As a result, the discus aquarium ought to be located in an open area of the home outside of heat, direct sunlight, lots of movement, and noise. Additionally, keep the aquarium elevated, with a light overhead if possible, as shadows might be troubling for discus fish.

Water Conditions

Discus wish to have water conditions similar to their natural surroundings, in which the water is normally soft and a little acidic, so keeping track of aquarium water conditions is extremely important. The main components of fish tank water to be aware of will be the temperature, softness, and pH. Discus fish thrive with a pH between five and a half and seven and temperatures of between 77 and 86°F (25-30°C). Also to help keep a healthy discus, it is very important to clean out the tank and change 25-30% of the water at a minimum once per week.

Aquarium Filters

Before introducing discus to your tank, you must establish nitrifying bacteria colonies in your filtration system. It is significant as they are in charge of keeping ammonia and nitrate ranges in hand by consuming fish waste. Hence selecting the required filtering system is really important for preserving the nitrification levels of your water, should you have a planted aquarium then this would likewise aid to decrease the level of toxins in the water. However, routine water changes are nevertheless needed for preserving discus fish health.

Discus fish tank Mates

Discus will need lots of space, so not putting discus with territorial tank mates goes a considerable way to preserving a happy and healthy discus. One of the better partners for discus fish can be a really beautiful fish known as Tetra, there are a number of varieties of Tetra however personally find Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras and Rummy Nose Tetras to help discus definitely feel pretty relaxed and secure since they help simulate their natural habitat. Lots of alternative species of fish may also be suitable. It is very important to avoid any large or aggressive fish when building your discus aquarium just like freshwater angelfish; because they can bully your discus and muscle them out at feeding time.

Are discus fish easy to keep?

If you are thinking about keeping discus fish, there are many things you need to know. I'll be covering 3 important areas that will help you to be successful with your aquarium. First, I'll discuss the aspects of hard or soft water. Next, I'll talk a little about what other fish are good to combine in the same aquarium as your fish. Lastly, I'll touch upon the behavior you should look for in healthy fish.

First, let me just say that keeping discus fish is no easy task, and if you are looking for an easy, low maintenance aquarium fish, discus probably aren't the best choice for you.

The first point I wanted to discuss is whether you should keep your discus fish in hard or soft water. This has been an ongoing debate amongst aquarium hobbyists for quite some time.

It's true that people have had success with both methods, but many people have also experienced less than desirable results. It's recommended that the best way to decide is to find out exactly what kind of water the fish were held in at the supplier or pet store, and try to match it as closely as possible. It's also important to note that experts agree that young discus should not be kept in very soft water due to the lack of minerals necessary for their growth. Once the discus reach at least 5 inches, it's generally alright to soften the water a bit. However, if you are trying to induce breeding conditions, you should lower the softness and PH of the water to trigger breeding activity between adults.

Next, let's discuss what fish are best suited to share an environment with your discus, and which aren't. You should avoid putting your discus fish in the same tank with much smaller fish, as they may prey upon them. As well, catfish should be avoided because they could be a danger to the discus. A good rule of thumb when keeping discus fish is to make sure that the discus are the biggest fish in the tank, and that any other fish you enter into the environment can live in the same water conditions as discus and are not aggressive.

Lastly, let's discuss the behavior of healthy discus. Healthy discus will often exhibit certain consistent behaviors and you should keep an eye out for these to make sure your discus fish are happy and healthy. Healthy discus fish are energetic and very interactive. They will commonly react to movements and people outside of the tank and will even eat out of your hand if they are in the mood! As well, they will not be sluggish and often make quick, darting movements from one side of the tank to another. If you are noticing these behaviors daily, that's a good sign that you are doing everything right!

Discus fish types

One of the best-loved tropical fish available is the divine discuss types of fish. If you typed discus fish into Google, you would likely be astonished at the diversity and vibrancy of these fish. If you are new to the variety of discuss species, this article is for you as a profile for some types of discuss out there.

Discuss fish are brightly colored with a striking shape that resembles a compact disc or Olympic discus. One of the other distinguishing features of discuss types of fish is its long length of around 10 inches. Discus care can be tricky though and discus is one of the hardest to care for in a home environment.

The two basic discus types you can get are the wild ones and the cultivated ones. The terms wild and cultivated refer to where they came from, natural environments or by cross-breeding.

Taking the natural discus to begin, Johan Heckel was famed as being the first to discover the Discus fish. His was the Heckel Discus. This type of Discus has a dark stripe down the side with a blue or red body. The descriptively named Green Discus come in a wide variety of greens with either stripes or spots down their side.

Brown discus are the ones you will encounter the most. These aren't the most inspiring to look at, with their dull dark brown hue and just the odd flecks of coloring. They are one of the hardiest of discus types and therefore easier to keep. If brown isn't for you, the Blue Discus are the same fish but, with a powerful blue coloring.

Wild discus types may come in a variety of shades and colorings, but the real fun begins when you look at the many cultivated discus types. The Albino Discus with its amazingly white body and alluring red eyes is actually the most recent addition to the cultivated discus types.

If you want a bit of glitz and glamour in your home aquarium, then the Blue Diamond Discus are the ones for you. With a luscious blue coloring over its entire body, it also boasts much slimmer fins than other discus. This is where its name comes from-the twinkles it causes in the water as the light hits its fins.

Discus come in different varieties, both wild and cultivated. Discus care basics are constant across the board. The tank size is important with discus fish due to the size they can grow, so aim for one that is medium to large. The water needs consideration as they are from South America and along the Amazon. The water there is called blackwater, due to its look and consistency. This can be achieved by purchasing special chemicals. The water should be reasonably hot all the time. Discus fish are not fussy eaters and will nibble away at live baby crickets and sea monkeys. To avoid parasites, it is better to stick to the specialist food available at fish and pet stores.

Discus fish are some of the most dazzling available, though it should be remembered how much work needs to go into keeping them well and alive. If you do choose discus types for your aquarium, you will not be disappointed.

You'll find lots of different colors of discus fish types for sale as well as many varieties to select from. These varieties include:

Alenquer

Blue Diamond

Brilliant Blue

Ocean Gree

Pearl Pigeon

Spotted Leopard

Leopard Skin

Leopard Pigeon

Ica Red

Blue Snake Skin

Snow White

Red Turquoise

Royal Blue

Red Melon (White Face)

Super Red Melon

Red Pigeon

Solid Blue Turquoise

Millennium Gold

Green Leopard

Leopard Snakeskin

Golden Snakeskin

As you can see, there are plenty of choices for you to select your fish from. It gets even more fun because the same fish can be known by several different names from different sellers. At times, a more common variety will be renamed something a bit more "interesting" to appeal to potential customers. You should also remember that color perception is affected by how the lighting reflects from the surroundings. For instance, a fish appearing as green turquoise in a shop may appear more blue turquoise when you get it home.

Selecting the Best Size of Discus

Before choosing the size of discus fish you want to buy for your aquarium, you should first decide what their purpose will be. To begin with, the cheapest way to start your discus aquarium is to buy very young ones. There are some disadvantages to buying them so young. They won't be able to breed for a long time and it's difficult to see what the color and quality is of them. Another issue is that not all of the discus fish will make it to adulthood when bought very young while others may not reach the full size of a discus. As some varieties of these fish don't start to show their colors until they're a year old, you may not actually know what you have until then.

If you're going to breed your discus, it's easiest to buy around 6 young or juvenile ones so they can grow up together. Getting 8 to 10 fishes will typically afford you at least 2 pairs. On the other hand, if you want a show aquarium, you should purchase adult specimens rather than young ones. However, adult discus for sale are rather costly. That's why most people buy the smaller ones.

How to Choose Your Discus Fish

Begin by observing the behavior of the ones you like. Healthy discus fish are alert and pretty brave, which means they won't hide in a corner all the time. The only time they may appear shy is when they're adjusting to their new home. It's normal for them to be aggressive to each other in groups, but watch for the ones that are particularly violent because they can harm the other fish.

Next, you'll want to check them for any signs of disease or other issues like torn or ragged fins or abnormal skin. Discus fish that look dark or clamp their fins are showing signs of stress. Healthy adults breathe 60 to 80 times per minute and young ones breathe a bit faster. If the fish has an abnormal breathing rate, is sick, or kept in a bad environment, it will weaken and die.

Adult fish for sale should show their color while the juvenile ones should be showing some of their color. Remember, if your Discus Fish is very young, you won't know what colors they'll develop until they're older. This is when a reputable breeder comes in because sellers aren't required to be honest with you.

You can tell a lot about a Discus Fish by looking at the head. Looking at it head-on, the part of the head located over its eyes should be convex. A concave head shows that the fish hasn't received enough nutrition. A bad diet will cause this as well as poor quality of water that makes a Discus stop eating.

You should also avoid stunted fish. If your fish hasn't been given a good environment with nutritious food, the growth rate will slow down too soon and the fish will remain stunted. If you get a stunted discus, there's nothing you can do to make them grow. Recognizing a stunted fish isn't that difficult. A Discus Fish that's roughly 6 months old should be about the size of a tennis ball. If you see a fish that's smaller, it's probably stunted. A discus that's 16 months old and still the size of a tennis ball is stunted. Pay attention to eyes that appear too big for the body as that is definitely a warning that something isn't right.

Discus tank

To provide a good haven for rare aquarium fish, it is imperative that you choose the right kind of aquarium and its associated equipment like air filters and motors. Plants release oxygen and also add to the glamour of an aquarium. They help to keep the fish tanks clean and devoid of germs and bacteria. If you can afford a larger aquarium, then it is a suitable choice to have a sizable number of fish, along with multi-colored gravel and seaweeds. Make sure that you also have the right equipment and an appropriate number of filters for the aquarium. This would ensure that it continues to offer a healthy environment to the fishes and does not need you to change the water frequently.

Always ensure that you meet the specific requirements for your Discus fish and adjust accordingly for discus tank. As they are more delicate than regular fishes, they need to be attended with a little care. Provide a sizable amount of showpieces like rocks, china clay, shells and conches to add some company to your fishes. Usually, a temperature of 84 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit is favorable for these fishes. It is important to learn about these factors from the aquarium keeper. They have a better knowledge of this subject. A convenient solution is to purchase a thermometer and place it inside your aquarium.

In truth, any fish would be hard to keep if you are not dedicated to providing them with quality care. Pets will demand attention even if they just live in a tank. They would need to be fed the proper amount and type of food and the water conditions must be tolerable. The water should be clean.

The discus needs to live in a large tank. They need to frolic and be able to move to and fro to and cover more distance. The tank should be big and wide enough and must be located where they cannot be disturbed by noises and other possible predators. They also must be kept away from too much sunlight and heat and the tank must have its own filter to rid the tank of bacteria and impurities that might cause diseases.

Provide discus with the right amount of meals. Fishes do not really die because of hunger, but they have a higher chance of dying from overfeeding. Give them a small amount of food and one large meal once a day.

Once you get hooked, you can try breeding the discus fish, it could either be for profit or something that could fulfill you, a new hobby you can turn into something profitable. You would need to invest your time, patience, and love to make them thrive. Learn how to mate the discus fish with another. Since the sex of the discus is hard to detect, you would need to place at least 7 discuss fish together and let them find their pair naturally but pair them with a different stock for better breeding and to avoid genetic disorders.

This breed of fish is popular today, and many people have included them in their home aquariums. If you'd like to add them to your tank, there are a few things you must know. The first is how to care for them to ensure they stay healthy. Second, we'll look at what to do if they contract an illness. Finally, you'll probably want to breed more discus fish, to further populate your tank. Let's take a deeper look at each of these topics in more detail below.

General Care Instructions

The discus fish has its origins in the Amazon River, and their name refers to their flat bodies, which resemble a saucer or disc. They boast a wonderful array of beautiful colors and hues, and this exotic species is a terrific addition to any aquarium! In fact, they've remained one of the most sought after fish for nearly a century, and you will have no trouble locating ones to purchase. However, they can be tricky to care for and there are several pointers you need to know, so you are successful in your efforts.

First off, it is important for them to have adequate space, which means having a tank big enough to handle their needs. How much do they require? The rule of thumb when it comes to discuss fish is to provide at least 10 gallons for each full-size adult you have in your tank. Also, it is interesting to note they often fare better when you have several together in the same aquarium. How many should you include in your tank? Between 5-7 discus fish is optimum, and you'll see the best results when you have a number is within this range. As you are probably realizing now, this means you'll need a minimum of 50-70 gallons of water in your fish tank, which is a fairly large amount.

Once you have a large enough space to house your new fish, you'll then need to concentrate on the water conditions. As with most fish, clean the tank each week. In terms of the correct water temperature, the consensus is that between 82-86 degrees Fahrenheit is best. This will keep them comfortably warm, and this most closely mimics their natural environment. You can tell if your tank is too cold if the discus fish move around only sluggishly. Also, the ph level of the water should remain within a tight range, somewhere around 6.0-7.0 on the scale. This is acidic, which is what discus fish prefer. Finally, it is important to keep the nitrogen levels of your tank low, and this will help them to thrive in their new surroundings!

A side not is needed here - discus fish don't do well with aggressive species, so don't include these in your tank! This will cause them a high amount of stress and will shorten their average lifespan. What types of fish are the best? First and foremost, they prefer other discus fish and then other laid back species. Yet, try to get breeds which are close to them in size, otherwise, the discus may think they are food! Also, fish which eat algae are not a good fit and they may cause them harm.

Correcting Problems which Arise

Now that we've examined how to create the perfect conditions for your discus to thrive, let's look at some common problems and illnesses. If the colors of the discus fade after you put them in their new home, this can show they are unhappy. Here, they can often stop eating, and if this continues, you will have an issue. Another sign of high stress is white and stringy feces in the water, which shows that they are becoming sick. How can you correct these problems? These can be fixed simply by increasing the temperature and raising the thermostat a few degrees can work wonders!

If adjusting the temperature has no beneficial effect, be sure to examine the other breeds of fish in the tank. As mentioned before, aggressive fish cause discus stress, so these should be removed. However, you may still have an issue after you've used both of these strategies. A third thing to look for is a worm infestation, as discus fish are susceptible to this type of condition. If this is present, medicine can easily correct the problem, and you include it in with their food until it clears up.

Breeding discus for profit

Discus fish are fantastic aquarium pets. They can be trained to recognize the owner and respond by eating at the hands of the people who provide food and they are also aware of what is happening to the room which makes them interesting and cool aquarium pets. However, only those who have ample knowledge must try to breed the discus fish. It is a very delicate species and could die if not given proper attention and care. If we properly care for them then we can say breeding discus for profit.

What does a breeder have to do?

Breeding discus means that the breeder must be able to provide quality water for the needs of the fish. It must not be too cold or too warm and the water must not contain any strong and harsh chemicals. The water must be soft close enough to 6.5 pH.

Why a Large Aquarium is Needed

In breeding discus, the owner must place the discus at a large aquarium which would enable them to move around with ease together with other fish. The food must be of high quality and any early signs of sicknesses in other discus fish must be treated immediately. The discus is with illness must be quarantined in order to prevent them from infecting the others. The breeder has to provide quality food and living conditions to make the life of the discus fish stress-free. By making the fish happy, we reduce future problems that can lead to medical conditions.

What are the conditions that are needed during the breeding period?

A discus will not breed if the aquarium is not large enough, the aquarium must be 15 inches for tall fishes, A 36 inches x 18 inches x 18 inches aquarium is the smallest and with 48 inches x 18 inches x 18 inches aquarium one can keep 4 to 6 smaller discus fish. Keep them and let them wait until they find their pair.

Why do you need to change the water frequently and what kind of diet must the discus have?

Make sure that the water will be changed frequently. The high protein diet of the fish will lead them to have a lot of waste products and this has to be removed as soon as possible. In breeding discus, food is crucial. The owner has to provide the best. A well-recommended food is the fish beef heart as well as spinach and bloodworms for variety. One can also try flake food that contains other nutrients and vitamins every now and then.

How would the discus fish react during the mating period?

Remember that during the breeding period the female and male discus would be territorial and would clean the breeding place before they decide to keep the eggs in it. During this stage, the warmth of the water must be consistent and soft in order not to shatter the eggs.

The eggs will then hatch within 48 hours if the water temperature is ideal after that the fry will move away from the breeding site together with the parents.

Discus fish care

There are different kinds of tropical fish and one has to be able to understand how to properly take care of them. Some make the mistake of buying a fish that they do not even understand. Having an aquarium is a serious responsibility and is considered to be rewarding and fulfilling once done correctly. The way a fish has to be taken care of varies and one has to know more in order to do more.

How to Discus fish care: Passion and Responsibility in Fish Care

The discus is a well-loved aquarium pet due to the fact that the fish are intelligent, loving and interactive with their owners. For this reason, many would like to understand how to care for discus fish, how to prolong their life and how to create the connection.

Discus fish care does not have to be seen as complex, rather, a challenge that once completed is a monumental achievement. It is the ability of the hobbyist to combine. Harmonize and make the lives of the fish thrive in order to get a sense of satisfaction.

Here are steps on how to care for discus fish:

1. Never underestimate the power of a book. Although online suggestions are good and contain helpful hints, nothing is better than taking the time to research on the real informative ways to care for the discus, learn the variety of the fish, how they came about and what makes them thrive.

2. Check the quality of water. Do not just use any tap-water. Make sure to remove the chlorine and other chemicals and to use soft water to maintain the pH of the water.

3. Use warm water never a cold one to maintain the needed water temperature by the discus. pH 7 - Gh 15 - Kh 8 - conductivity 800ms - temp 30C

4. Sign up for fish practical fishing magazines in order to get more helpful hints on how to care for discus fish.

5. It would be best to care for an older discus fish and they tend to be stable. Choose 12cm and over so that you can be definite regarding the color and the shape that you will be getting.

6. Never buy only one discus fish. It has to be able to interact with 5 or more discus in order to thrive and never alone.

7. Make sure that the water is clean and changed every now and then, it would be best not to place gravel in order for an easier maintenance.

8. Never use a carbon filter as this could affect the quality of life of the fish.

9. It would be best to keep the design of the tank minimal. You can include some plants and a few stones and wood but less is better in order to make the maintenance faster. It would be best to give the discus fish swimming space.

10. It would be good to use a grolux tube for discus for lighting.

There are several aspects that you would have to take note of when you decide to take care of discus fish. Discus fish care is more than just the pH level of the water. It is also about where you will locate the aquarium, when you will feed the fish, how to treat younger discus fish from older ones, learning how to make the discus fish habitat as realistic as possible.

In truth, it would be better to use real plants because they are safer than plastic and they would provide shelter and vegetation for the fish rather than plastic ones. But you can also add some plastic designs if you want the aquarium to look more aesthetically pleasing.

Discus fish care has a lot to do with the type of habitat that you will provide for them. Remember that they would be residing inside it for the rest of their lives and you would want to make sure that the fish remain interested.

Discus fish are very intelligent. So you would want to place decors like rocks and driftwood, but before placing the rocks make sure they do not contain ores or contaminants and that you keep rocks that have the same color and texture. Avoid using colorful ones. Aside from that, you can also, place sunken ships that they can play with and other decors that serve a purpose.

Moreover, you need to make sure that they have good filtration. The quality of the water needs to be checked every now and then and you should need a good filtration system to ensure that the fish would be in a healthy condition.

The 3 stages of water filtration must be fulfilled like the mechanical stage, wherein the water will be rid of floating debris and sediments. The next step would be biological where it would get rid of bacteria inside the water in order to make sure of an efficient discus fish care and the third process which is to make use of the chemical process wherein the water can be filled with carbon in order to remove the impurities and keep a balanced state of the water.

The kind of filter that you will use will depend on the type of tank that you have. You can try using the display tanks. Use canister filters in order to make sure that the water will be clear and not nasty to look at. But if it is a breeding tank, you would want to make use of an internal power filter as this has been proven to be good for them.

Discus fish breeding tank setup

Contrary to some beliefs that breeding discus fish does not require much attention unlike some pets, we have to understand that choosing to have fish as pets would also entail some challenges. For example, a person cannot simply just choose any kind of water type, size of the fish tank and the kind of food that you will provide them, especially the part wherein you face questions on how breeding discus fish works.

Exotic Fish and How They Must Be Handled

The first thing to make sure of when breeding discus fish are the habits of the exotic fish. They will not react like other domesticated fish. Discus have the habit of choosing their partner alone and because of this they can cost more than what you might expect.

After that, they will choose a Discus fish breeding tank setup that is vertical for their mating process and the area would have to be cleaned before they will lay their eggs. They at times would spawn at the side of the tank and after lying of the eggs the parents would be extremely protective of their young. The good thing here is that they will not be aggressive to other fish inhabitants except if the others would attempt to go near the eggs. You would want to provide them with plants or corals where they can hide.

In breeding discus fish, add a small bag of peat moss in the power filter for it is like recreating the natural water conditions of the discus fish likened to the Amazon River where it originally came from.

You have to make sure that the fish take contains no pollutants and the acid levels are just at 6.5 pH. The water condition should also be soft and with a warm temperature of 77-84°F (25-29°C. It would also be best to place them in larger tanks especially during the breeding process to take them away from possible predators. The recommended minimum tanks must have at least 55 gallons: the bigger the better.

How to setup your own Home aquarium

2019-11-04T01:07:00.001-08:00

Home aquarium

The simplest form of fish to display would use a single fish bowl or a small 2-gallon home aquarium. Using either would require some substrate (gravel) and decorations. You might use cold-water fish such as Bettas (Siamese Fighting Fish or Goldfish. Both like colder water, which means it's unnecessary to have a heater. Fishbowls also don't require filtration. Both Bettas and Goldfish enjoy a simple diet or flakes or pellets and would require weekly water changes. Be sure to keep them away from high-traffic areas as too much activity is stressful to any fish. Bettas are aggressive, so you can only have one in a bowl or aquarium. Goldfish do just fine alone or in groups.

Even if you are a beginner aquarists, you can keep warm-water fish simple to care for. Warm water fish require temperatures between 72-82 degrees, meaning they will require a heater. Easy care species include Black Mollies, White Cloud, Danios, Swordtails and Guppies. These fish can dwell together in a community tank with few problems. These species are hardy, lively, can live on a flake or pellet diets, active, small and long-lasting. The home aquarium would require a 10 percent water change to keep the water fresh and healthy.

Aquariums can be decorated according to your personal taste, using any color preference and the many types of decorations are limitless, so matching any décor would be very easy to do. I personally have a 55-gallon aquarium with one Red-bellied Pacu. My tank is located in my dining room. My living- and dining room consists of off-white and black furniture. My aquarium has white gravel with black slate rock pieces, as well as a solid black background. Before the Pacu grew large, there were also black and white plants as well. The tank is on a black wrought iron stand and blends in perfectly with the surrounding décor. The only downside to an aquarium of this size is not being able to move it around at will. It is in an ideal spot away from windows to prevent algae growth, and it is also away from heavy traffic areas.

The home aquarium is a great conversation piece, as visitors are always enthralled with the size of my Pacu and its care. What started off to fill empty space has evolved into a large aquarium that holds a lone fish species and is a very beautiful decorative accent in my home.

Aquarium light led

Following the aquarium is clear inside you are able to move onto the following actions. Aside from that, you will need to decorate the aquarium also. Should you require it for your home aquarium, you probably are most likely to find it here in our store.

There are many kinds of aquarium lighting intended for different purposes, and not one option directly empowers the fish! It may be necessary for coral and plants, but it's not for the fish. The right lighting for an aquarium depends on the individual set-up and the light demands of the tank’s inhabitants.

Aquarium lighting, for instance, can cost you particularly if your purchase is wholly wrong for your objective. It describes any type of artificial lighting that is used to light up an aquarium. It's an important aspect when keeping your aquarium and it's an often overlooked area that can be confusing for a newcomer to aquariums. It's important to feature the successful aquarium and many people do not give it that much importance. Brackish fish tank lighting resembles freshwater and planted tank lighting, based on the species included.

Lighting is a significant portion of having an aquarium that is attractive, and since you browse within this guide, it's very helpful to the plant life, fish and coral you've got in the aquarium too. Lighting ought to be designed at the very best way to mimic natural daylight. You only need to understand a few things so you select the ideal aquarium lighting for your tanks needs.

Fluorescent lighting is really the most normal lighting kit system today. Aquarium light led is getting to be one of the most well-known choices for aquarium hobbyists. The LED lighting is also famous for its flexibility, allowing users to add particular colors or additional lighting modules on the way.

Lights are among the most significant components of your aquarium habitat. The light it puts out is awesome. There are a variety of reasons to find the best lights and a lot of diverse options to select from. When selecting the appropriate LED aquarium lights, you might wonder what you must think about.

For a fish only aquarium, you might use any kind of aquarium kit you desire. There are many creative procedures for placing lights within the aquarium. The form of aquarium light you require for your fish tank really depends on what you intend on keeping in your aquarium. Aquarium light led can be set up in the shape of a retro kit that is usually set up in the wooden canopy or fully incorporated aquarium light fixture. LED aquarium lights are far better than fluorescent lighting for a lot of reasons.

Now LED lights are developed in an adequate and sufficient supply of light for all kinds of aquariums. It can cost you more upfront to acquire better aquarium light led which will last longer, but, it will help you save money down the street since you will not need to fuss with buying new components and bulbs each time something breaks. A normal incandescent light doesn't work nicely for aquariums.

Building an aquarium

You are finally pulling the trigger and looking to building an aquarium. There are some important considerations you should keep in mind when starting that will help you make the best decisions:

1) What kind of tank are you even looking for? This is probably the most logical but challenging place to start. Be cautious of out-doing yourself in your first aquarium and taking on too much to handle. A good tip is to start smaller and then build up as you gain more experience and expertise in the hobby. Some good starter size tanks are 10 gallons, 20 gallons, and 29 gallons.

2) How much is your budget for building an aquarium? This might be obvious from someone on the outside, but it is easy to get caught up in spending hundreds of dollars on your first visit to the store. Make sure you plan out your expenses prior to shopping to avoid purchasing unexpected products. This budget will help determine what kind of aquarium you can build. Freshwater is easier and less costly to build. I built a healthy 20-gallon freshwater aquarium in under $150, but yours could vary. For a saltwater aquarium, make sure you do your research in product costs and maintenance costs. It is not uncommon to spend upwards of $1,000, especially for a reef aquarium.

3) Building an aquarium is not a sprint, it's a marathon. The key to building a beautiful and desirable aquarium is time. You're new to the aquarium will need time to filter your water and build the correct levels within the tank to maintain a survivable and healthy environment. Especially for saltwater reef aquariums, time is key to your success. Be patient and enjoy your journey, even when your aquarium is growing into what you want it to be.

4) Understand maintenance is a recurring task. Maintaining an aquarium can be challenging. Just like you work to keep your home clean, an aquarium requires the same effort from you to make sure the aquarium environment remains sustainable. Make sure you have the time to invest in maintaining your aquarium or find an aquarium maintenance company to help maintain your aquarium for you. Investing in equipment to assist you in cleaning your aquarium can be invaluable. Filtration systems are almost always a need, protein skimmers can be used for saltwater tanks, and even the live rock and sand can be used as an additional level of filtration.

Fish medications

TOPICAL

This usually involves the application of a paste/gel onto an external lesion (e.g. applying dilute Betadine over a bacterial skin infection).

PARENTERAL (i.e. via injection)

Intramuscular (IM)

This is the most commonly used method for antibiotic injection. Aim for the muscle block just ventral and caudal to the dorsal fin. The needle should be positioned between the scales and aimed at coming in from a caudo-rostral angle. Inject slowly to prevent reflux. The medication is rapidly dispersed by the rich blood supply. This procedure is suggested for gravid females and not prescribed for little fish and fish with little muscle mass. The disadvantage of this method is that the injection site may discolor (aim for dark-colored areas on the fish so that melanisation will not show).

Intraperitoneal (IP)

Place the fish on its side or on its back to allow the peritoneal organs to gravitate away from the body wall. Insert the needle into this space at a shallow point to abstain from entering the inside organs. This is a common route of administrating vaccines as it is done on small fish and will not harm the flesh. It is also good for administrating "painful" medications such as enrofloxacin. The disadvantages of this method are:

• damaging the peritoneal organs or

• If injected into the ovary, the drug will not redistribute to the rest of the body, and

• If injected into the intestinal lumen, the drug will be excreted.

Intravenous (IV)

Fish must be anaesthetised. Insert the needle midline and at 90 to 45 degrees, needle pointing towards the front, just caudal to the ventral fin. Stop just short of the spine. This procedure is utilized more-ordinarily for drawing blood than for controlling fish medications.

ORAL Per os

This is a common delivery method for antibiotics on large farms for ease of fish medications large numbers of fish and also minimizes handling stress. However, the delivery of the correct doses to each individual fish is difficult (sick fish are usually inappetence, and it is these that should actually be receiving the medication). Medication is sprayed onto the food, impregnated into the food, or prepared with food coated with medicated gelatin, agar or oil. Depending on the drug, this medicated food may sometimes be less palatable. It is recommended to reduce the amount of food fed per day by 25-50%.

Gastric intubation

If fish are not eating, they can be anaesthetized and force-fed via a stomach tube. Use a 3mm outer diameter catheter and a 5ml syringe (for larger fish, use a 6mm outer diameter with a 20ml syringe). Administer 1.0-1.15 ml/kg body weight. Due to the high pressure needed to deliver the suspension, the tube may need to be glued to the syringe with cyanoacrylate (e.g. super glue).

IN-WATER MEDICATION

Dip

This is useful for external parasitic infections and involves using relatively high concentrations of drugs dissolved in the water of a treatment tank. Fish are held in nets and briefly immersed in the treatment solution and then placed into a hospital/quarantine tank. This is often used for new arrivals. Make sure dips are refreshed regularly.

Bath

This is a variation of the 'dip' treatment. It uses lower drug concentration and involves allowing the sick fish to swim in the medicated water for a period ranging between 2-60 minutes. These are useful for external infections, including protozoal, bacterial, and fungal. Commercially, this method is used for vaccinating fish against bacterial infection.

Prolonged immersion/permanent bath

This is yet another variation of fish medications water where very low concentrations of the drug is used, but the length of exposure is increased. This is useful if the parasites have stages in their life cycle when they are refractory to treatment (e.g. white spot disease) - the longer exposure time in the medicated water will increase the chances of killing the parasites when they reach the susceptible stage. This method is also used to reduce osmoregulatory stress when 2-5mg/L of salt (sodium chloride) is added, with other forms of treatment. It is also the most frequently used method where client compliance may be low, as it is the easiest option.

Aquarium fish selection

Aquarium fish selection for an aquarium tank can be quite a daunting task. However, with the right tips and information, it is possible to choose any variety of fish that is well suited to the tank.

Some of the most common types of ornamental fish include goldfish, guppies, platies, molly fish and so forth. Most of these varieties are imported from different countries, such as Thailand and Hong Kong. Aquariums are known to add a unique charm and vibrancy to a place. It also adds to the decor of a home or office space when the elements are chosen carefully.

Some Useful Tips:

Pick Right Type Fish: Some breeds are known to have specific feeding habits, and this can lead to excessive accumulation of nitrate and other waste materials in the water. These waste materials can be detrimental to the fish.

Good Species: It is also important to choose species resistant to diseases, active and hardy. Correct aquarium fish selection breeds which appear to be healthy without signs of white patches, frayed fins, discoloured skin and so forth. It must be able to withstand the changing conditions of the aquarium and even adapt to several other conditions in the tank. Some pets are vulnerable and lonely. It may stop feeding and become sick suddenly.

Similar Community: Choosing fish from the same community is an excellent idea, as it will provide the required balance in the tank. These pets exhibit similar characters and require the same water temperature and chemistry.

Reputable Stores: It is always important to buy from pet stores that maintain proper hygiene. The tanks must be sanitized once in a while and sick pets must be quarantined. Remember to visit the store before buying the pet to evaluate the feeding habits and the health of the fish.

Peaceful Community: It is also important to choose fish that belong to a peaceful community. There are many aggressive breeds of tropical fish that feed on live fish. Such varieties of fish also require a large space in the tank.

Size of Tank: Another important factor to consider before buying pets is the size of the aquarium or tank. It is essential to buy pets according to the size of the tank. Too many fish in the tank can lead to poor water quality and accumulation of ammonia. The type, size and the filters of the tanks must be considered before buying pets.

It is easy to find different ornamental fish on many of the online stores too affordable price rates. However, it is essential to know about different breeds before buying these varieties of fish from online stores. Even though there are many stores that showcase and sell different types of fish, it is essential to choose the right breeds that can be maintained hygienically in the tank.

Aquarium plumbing ideas

If you have any desire to move beyond goldfish and guppies and into the exciting world of saltwater reef aquariums, you are going to have to tackle the basics of plumbing your aquarium. Many of the invertebrates you work with in a reef aquarium require a strong flow of water running constantly through the setup. This water movement is critical for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide and removing waste products produced by live coral and other creatures you may have in your aquarium.

Some important aquarium plumbing ideas as below.

Flexible Line and PVC

When considering the plumbing of your aquarium, you have a choice of setting your system up with a flexible line or PVC piping. Both have advantages and disadvantages.

The flexible line consists of rubber tubing, which can be bent into configurations much more easily than the solid plastic of PVC piping. This makes it convenient for plumbing small aquarium setups, where you don't have lots of room to work out the plumbing details. This ability to bend as you go also makes installing flexible tubing easier and faster than PVC piping, and it is also easier to replace the tubing if your aquarium system should suddenly spring a leak. To attach the tubing to your plumbing system, you will need to purchase clamps that are the same size as the tube.

On the flip side, the flexibility of tubing makes it more liable to a kink, which can restrict water flow to your aquarium. This forces the return pump to work harder, thereby shortening the life of this piece of equipment. Another disadvantage is that the most flexible line is transparent, which can create issues of organic growth inside the tube if it is exposed to light for very long.

For larger tanks and situations where high pressure is part of the system, PVC pipe is the best choice. PVC is made of rigid plastic, which doesn't kink and is much less likely to break. Because it comes in a variety of sizes, you can buy straight tee fittings, 45 degree elbows, and 90 degree elbows, and create a system that ranges from a drain and return loop all the way to a setup that includes multiple aquariums connected together by plumbing. Adding more plumbing to your system is an easy process with PVC pipe parts. Also, PVC pipe is opaque, so you avoid algae growth in your system.

One disadvantage to a plumbing system based on PVC piping is that the parts are usually glued together. Unless you created the system with several threaded connections screwed together, you will have to see the piping apart whenever your plumbing has an issue. Another disadvantage to PVC pipe is its inflexibility. Sometimes the plumbing ends up sticking out more than flexible tubing, which can hug the aquarium and be tucked out of the way.

Other Plumbing Pieces

Besides pipes and connectors, you will need some other pieces in an aquarium plumbing job. For instance, good ball valves let you control the flow of water or even shut the water off temporarily. A ball valve opens and shuts by a swing arm which moves the half circle shaped plastic element inside the valve, increasing or reducing the amount of liquid that can move through the hole in the valve. A PVC ball valve operates without using any o-rings or washers, so it is less likely to wear out.

Another handy piece when you are doing your own plumbing is known as a union coupling. Also referred to as a union valve, it consists of three sections: female and male ends, plus an oversized nut that connects the two ends together. The union coupling is a hand tightened, instead of being glued into place. Even better, this coupling gives you easy access to parts of your aquarium plumbing that require maintenance or cleaning, such as inline heaters and chillers, reactors, UV sterilizers, and that space between the return pump's outlet and the remaining plumbing.

Bulkhead slips are a necessary piece of equipment after you've drilled a hole in the walls of your aquarium to install more plumbing, because it transforms a hole in the glass to a location where you can attach plumbing to the glass. The bulkhead slip consists of two pieces of plastic that push together from each side of the glass. Gaskets at the union prevent the system from leaking. You can choose among three versions of bulkhead slips: slip to a thread, thread to slip, and slip to slip.

Fish tank heaters how they work

The temperature of the fish tank is absolutely critical for the well-being of the species of fish inhabiting it. Unlike human beings and warm-blooded pets, species of fish tend to not generate their unique physique heat. They must rely on the temperature of the water to regulate their internal temperature. The fish aquarium heaters how they work all information below covers and everything you need to understand regarding heating units, and will cover types of fish tank heaters, sizes, and placement of the heater.

Deciding on the fish tank heater how they work with your aquarium tank isn't difficult as long as you recognize the variances between several fish tank heaters. Depending on the size of your tank and additional components such as a sump, you may have to decide what will work best for your aquarium.

Figuring out which kind of water heater to acquire for your aquarium tank is just the main picture. Heaters occur in several sizes and power ratings. Once you know what size heater, you need and the heater; you are ready to select the brand. Please read reviews online or on the fish tank heater site at the end of the article to see what heaters are worth buying.

Many species of fish that want warmed-up water for ideal health and fitness (such as the Betta) are held in small tanks or containers. Regrettably, mini tanks and smaller types of fish tanks could be a difficult task to heat adequately. In past times, a couple of years maybe, a range of small heating units were introduced towards the aquarium tank market place. Have a look at these types heating units specifically made for mini aquariums if you own a tank less than 10 gallons in volume. They are typically marketed as "nano" or "pico" heaters and get the job done fairly well without the risk of over-heating the tank with a full-sized fish tank heater.

Once you purchase a fish tank heater, the next step is deciding where to place it in the tank. Should the item become located in the middle or off to a side? Can you route the current more efficiently? Will it possibly make a difference? There are many simple, although crucial, tips for proper water heater placement. A little trial and error also goes a long way. You may want to invest in a thermometer probe to accurately monitor the aquarium temperature.

Even under great conditions, issues can certainly occur. Essentially, the most frequent undesired event is usually a water heater that decides to break without warning. In the event that you are worried about this happening, you must think of utilizing a water heater safeguard. You'll want to have it when you need it. You might as well throw it in the cart when you buy the heater.

Another difficult fish tank heater task is usually through the summer whenever aquarium tank water temperatures increase along with ambient temperature. At times, turning off the fish tank heater isn't really ample to stop hazardously excessive water temperatures, and extra measures are needed and keep the species of fish cool. One can add cups of cold water, but that is quite time consuming. Chillers exist and are essentially the opposite of the heater. If you're roughly in the middle hemisphere, you might as well throw a chiller in the cart with your fish tank heater and heater safeguard.

From the wintertime, the opposite issue can occur. This is especially true should your water heater not be able to provide enough heat during the winter time of the year, and measures should be taken in order to keep the species of fish warm. Either a stronger heater, or ideally a second heater should be considered as well. Two heaters will ensure the tank doesn't get too out of line should one fail. Even if your 300-Watt heater is twice as strong as a 150-Watt heater, should it decide not to turn on then it becomes a 0-Watt heater. Might as well throw a second heater in the cart.

Hopefully, you will have a better idea of fish tank heaters how they work and what type of fish tank heater to purchase. Once you have an ideal system in place, you won't have to worry because you know the aquarium temperature will be constant and if something were to fail, there are safeguards in place to prevent disaster.
