Cha-yen (Thai iced tea)

The basic ingredients of this drink is plain black tea sweetened with sugar and condensed milk. Some modifications also include various spices, such as orange blossom water, lime, mint, food coloring, or tamarind seed.

To make cha-yen, condensed milk and sugar are mixed with the tea before it is poured over ice and then topped with evaporated milk to create creamy appearance.

Sato (rice wine)

Sato is actually more like a traditional Thai beer, but local people call it a "wine" even when it not made from grapes. This beverage is made from fermenting Thai sticky rice with water and yeast. Its strength is very similar to beer, but it doesn't have to be alcoholic, as sweet Sato can be made by fermenting for only a short period of time, not enough for alcohols to form, but enough for sugars to form from the starch.

As a traditional drink, sato is usually served in a large bowl, into which individuals dip their glasses or cups. It's also typically served at room temperature. However, serve sato in a glass with ice is also common.

Oliang (Thai iced coffee)

Oliang is a blend of coffee with soybeans, corn, sesame seeds, and sugar. Other ingredients such as tamarind seed also can be added. This coffee is best served cold with, sometimes with condensed milk topping.

Traditionally, this coffee is brewed with a tung dtom kaffee, a tea/coffee sock with a metal ring and a handle to which a cotton cloth bag is attached. It is also used for making Thai tea.

Nam Makham (tamarind juice)

Located in tropical climate, Thailand is a perfect place to cultivate tamarind. Young tamarind is somewhat sour and is often used to add that flavor element in Thai cuisine. While the ripe one tastes slightly sweeter, which is suitable for a refreshing drink.

The juice is made by squishing the tamarind fruit with water until it forms a pulp. This pulp is heated with water and then chilled and served over ice. While heating, salt and sugar (syrup) can be added to make a combination of sweetness and sourness.

Yes, it's the home address of Sherlock Holmes, a popular fictional detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Although the character is fictional, the street is not. Baker Street is a real street name, which located in the Marylebone district of the City of Westminster in London.

The City of Westminster is a London borough occupying much of the central area of London. If you have a plan to visit London, it's recommended to search London bed and breakfast hotel in Westminster area, as there are plenty of tourist sites in this region, namely Madame Tussauds Museum, Royal Opera House, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, London Zoo, and Sherlock Holmes Museum.

Sherlock Holmes Museum is a museum dedicated to the life and times of the world's most popular detective. Officially, the museum has a postal address of 221B Baker Street, although it's actually situated between numbers 237 and 241. The city council has allowed the usage of this address since the museum opened in March 1990. According to the novel, Sherlock Holmes and his loyal sidekick Dr. Watson lived on Baker Street between 1881-1904. During that period, the museum building itself was used as a boarding house.

Museum Attractions

The museum building is n 4-storey1815 Georgian townhouse, very similar to the 221B described in the Sherlock Holmes' books. The interior has been faithfully maintained for posterity exactly as described in the published stories.

This excellent museum contains all the artifacts described in the four novels and short stories of Sherlock Holmes, where the exhibits are from the various cases Holmes and Watson solved, and the many rooms of this old house are set up exactly as you would imagine when you read the books. You'll get the feeling as though the characters are to appear at any moment.

The famous study room overlooking Baker Street is located on the 1st floor above a flight of 17 steps. Visitors can sit in Sherlock Holmes’s armchair by the fireside to pose for photos, and enter his bedroom adjoining the study. Holmes' possessions, such as his deerstalker, magnifying glass, calabash pipe, violin, chemistry equipment, and notebook, are all there in this study room. Unfortunately for those who're not a fans of this detective, they probably won't know the meaning of these stuffs, as they don't have any information that describe them.

At the bottom floor there's a gift shop selling all manner of Sherlock Holmes related things, from note pads to models of Victorian cameras, decent DVD selection, and even copies of the outfits from the stories.

One drawback of this museum is that you won't find any memorabilia of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This mostly because the family don't want anything to do with the museum, as they don't like the idea of people thinking that Sherlock Holmes was a real person. The presence of the museum would strengthen the idea in the minds of many fans that Holmes and Dr. Watson were really exist.

Most countries have a national cuisine or dish that visitors are told they must try. It is often the highlight of a trip. From escargot in Paris to freshly made naan in India, I have loved trying new dishes while traveling. It is easy to use a guidebooks to find restaurants that serve excellent examples of a country’s most famous dishes. However, sometimes you just don’t love what a country has to offer or maybe you eat so much of it you make yourself sick. I had this experience while studying abroad in Tanzania.

This was not a luxury safari trip, so we ate where the locals ate at red Coca-Cola tables just off the street. Pretty much any place that has these plastic tables is generally safe to eat at.

Although eating with locals definitely improved my minimal Swahili the choices were very limited. The national dish is ugali and is a very white, beyond bland, spongy starch made of maize. It is a good way to get calories and is filling, but has absolutely no flavor. It is usually used to scoop up stews with your hands. Unfortunately, even with a great stew I found I really preferred rice.

So here I was in Mto Wa Mbu, Tanzania and pretty much all there is to eat is ugali and barbecued goat, which has great flavor, but is incredibly stringy. So it was a delight to discover Blue Turaco. It had just opened when we arrived in Mto Wa Mbu and the chef was an incredibly nice older Tanzanian. This is not a typical restaurant for Mto Wa Mbu, instead it serves napoli style pizza. And a really good one at that. Now my taste buds may have lowered their expectations a little bit after only eating rice and beans and a kale like green vegetable, but Blue Turaco makes a pretty amazing pizza. It was an incredibly unique find, and one that was not replicated for the rest of my 10 weeks in Tanzania and Kenya. This was not a restaurant run by ex-pats, but natives and my favorite pizza used “Arusha” cheese from a nearby larger city. With a cold Kili beer it makes for a great evening off the beaten path.
