Studies have shown that certain types of cookware containing metals and other harmful contaminates can negatively impact one’s health. When choosing cookware, it is important to understand the health risks of certain types of cooking products.

Stainless Steel Cookware: This cookware contains a blend of different types of metals such as nickel, aluminum, chromium, and molybdenum which can enter the food as it is cooking and then be consumed. A study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease in 2007 showed “a correlation between elevated aluminum levels in the brain and the development of Alzheimer's disease.”

Nonstick Cookware: This type of cookware contains plastic polymers. For instance, Teflon is coated with the synthetic resin. When heated, the polymers produce noxious and toxic fumes. This can be dangerous to one’s health.

Anodized Aluminum Cookware: In this cookware, the electro-chemical anodizing process holds in the cookware’s chief metal, aluminum, so that it does not trickle into the cooking food. Many healthy conscious people are using this type of cookware as it is considered safe.

Cast Iron Cookware: Many experts say that cat iron cookware may improve health.
It is recognized for its sturdiness and uniform heat distribution. Cast iron cookware can also help you get enough iron as it trickles in small amounts into the food. It is a safe cookware.

Ceramic Cookware: Ceramic enameled cookware allows for proper heat distribution and does not contain any harmful metals and chemicals. It is dishwasher-friendly and fairly non-stick. It holds in the juices when food cooks enhancing flavor.

Copper Cookware: Copper can trickle into the food as it cooks so this cookware is lined with stainless steel. It is not recommended for those who are looking for metal free cookware.

Clay Cookware: A moist clay pot will roast and steam food and retain the food’s natural flavor and nutrients. Clay pot cooking makes nutrient-rich and low-fat food that is delicious. Clay distributes the heat consistently and holds in the heat. There are no chemicals or metals in this cookware.

We carry our line of Solay Gourmet Clay Cookware, click here for our clay cookware.

Bamboo Steamers: These steamers do not contain any chemicals, manufactured additives, or other harmful substances. Bamboo steamers create a more flavorful, consistently uniform cooked food, while retaining the natural flavors of the food as well as the essential vitamins and minerals. Bamboo steamers give one the ability to cook multiple foods at once because they can offer separate layers or compartments.

Glass Cookware: This type of cookware is completely inert so there is no leakage of chemicals into the food. It is great for storing and re-heating food.

Plastic Cookware: There are plasticizers found in some plastic cookware that produce hormone mimicking elements called endocrine disrupters, which are now study for possible links to birth defects, cancer or fertility troubles. Cookware with plasticizers should not be used in the microwave.

Silicone Cookware: Silicone rubber is chemically inert which means no toxins or gases should be emitted from it. They are derived from sand and oxygen molecules and are non toxic.

Because of this highly toxic world we live in, it is important that we maintain good health by reducing exposure to toxic chemicals. Choosing safe and non toxic cookware is one way to cook our food without the risk of consuming chemicals.

Ayurveda, Oil Pulling, Salt Clearing

Ayurveda, Oil Pulling, Salt Clearing

Dating back thousands of years, the practice of oil pulling was a popular Indian Ayurvedic treatment. Oil pulling is the process of swirling and pulling oil around the mouth and in between the teeth. When done, the used oil is spit out and then one rinses their mouth with water. The purpose of oil pulling is to remove toxins, contaminants, and bacteria, and infection pus from inside the mouth and in between the teeth.

A person will use one tablespoon of oil and rinse their mouth one to three times a day for about 20 minutes. As the oil mixes with the saliva, the composition will change from its thick consistency to thin, foamy, and a yellow color. The gargling action will trigger enzymes to activate and they will pull out toxins from the blood. You will know it is working because as you continue swishing and swirling, the oil gets thinner and becomes white. Those who study oil pulling report that movement of oil in the mouth causes the sublingual muscles to expel toxins. However, others say the saliva mixing with the oil stimulates the release of stored toxins. It is important not to swallow the oil when done because it contains the toxins and bacteria.

Organic, unrefined sunflower, sesame seed and cold pressed oils are the most recommended oils to use. Experts state that oil pulling should be performed on an empty stomach because you may vomit if you have a full stomach. As well, the recommended time to perform oil pulling is in the morning and a couple of other times throughout the day and evening.

Oil pulling is a component of the Ayurvedic custom of holistic medicine. Health conditions it is used for include: strengthening the jaw, gums, and teeth, as well as for bleeding gums, bad breath, tooth decay, dry throats, and cracked and chapped lips.
After a few weeks of use, one will normally notice such results as whiter teeth, a pink tongue, and better breath.

Indications that oil pulling is working is that one will experience an increase of mucous flow from the sinuses and throat. As it builds up, you can spit it out and start again with a fresh tablespoon of oil. It is normal to feel a little nausea because your body is experiencing the toxins being removed. Your body is actually being cleansed and detoxified. These symptoms will gradually diminish as you get healthier. That is, there is a reduction of toxins in the body.

There have been some astounding benefits reported such as bleeding of the gums will stop, loose teeth will tighten, whitening of the teeth occurs as stains are removed, and there is a reduction in migraines. As well, oil pulling treats the whole body and there have been improvements in such conditions as blood disorders, kidney disease, women's hormonal troubles, leukemia, bronchitis, meningitis, arthritis, eczema, Intestinal disease, peritonitis, heart disease, and illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, and other long term diseases.

Another benefit of oil pulling is that it is inexpensive and easy to perform. It is completely safe for people, that include children, elderly, and pregnant women. For one looking to embrace a healthier lifestyle by pulling out toxins, pus, bacteria, and other unhealthy elements from the body, oil pulling may be a way of working to achieve that lifestyle.

After oil pulling, we recommend rinsing and gargling your mouth and cleaning your sinuses with Himalayan salt water to help rid of bacteria and clean out remainder of build up.
You can purchase Solay Himalayan salts here.

Wellness Fair ...Spiritual Journaling...Retreat

Spiritual Journaling Classes

I hope you are enjoying the beautiful colors! He has worked in institutions like Hinduja Hospital , Bombay Hospital , Saifee Hospital , Tata Memorial etc. Presently, he is heading our Nuclear Medicine Department and Thyroid clinic at Riddhivinayak Cardiac and Critical Centre, Malad (W).

The following message given by him, I feel makes a lot of sense and is important for all to know

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water . *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected o ne. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Pass this on to your entire e-list. You never know 20 who might pay attention to it - and STAY ALIVE because of it.

Purchase a Solay Neti Pot with Himalayan salt to start your routine today!

Natural Rubber Yoga Mats to Breathe Easier

Natural Rubber Yoga Mats...Breathe Easier

According to a study from Yoga Journal, “almost 16 million people are practicing yoga and interest is rapidly increasing.” When looking for the best yoga mat, many people are unaware that PVC Yoga Mats contain a number of hazardous toxins and chemicals. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the main ingredient found in industrial manufactured yoga mats. Vinyl chloride, a known carcinogen, is the base substance found in PVC. Other common chemical additives found in PVC yoga mats include lead, cadmium, and phthalates. Health risks associated with these chemical additives include reproductive problems, cancer, disruptions in the endocrine system, and many other conditions. These additives are also emitted during use and leak into groundwater when disposed of in a landfill. As well, PVC is non biodegradable, creates harmful carcinogens known as dioxins during manufacturing, and cannot be recycled.

Natural Rubber Mats have become a healthy and earth-friendly choice for many people. These mats are made from natural rubber and jute. They do not contain chemical additives or plastic substances such as PVC, cadmium, lead, or phthalates. Natural rubber is biodegradable and harvested from sustainable rubber trees. Natural Rubber Mats are manufactured without using such chemicals as phthalate plasticizers, chlorine, and PVC. Mats are hand washable and provide durability, traction, comfort, .high-rebound, and stability, allowing for all yoga positions. Natural Rubber Mats also contain a moisture resistant and a thick textured surface which provides more stickiness and grip.

When engaging in body/mind exercises to achieve optimum physical and mental well-being, it is important to be aware of elements that are both harmful to you and the environment. Choosing a natural rubber yoga mat helps reduce chemical hazards and promotes a healthier lifestyle and planet.

Click here to purchase your natural rubber yoga mat

What is acupuncture and how it can help you breathe better

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) autumn is the season associated with the Lung. The Lungs in TCM function a little differently than the Western description of the organ. While they are still responsible for expelling unclean air from the body, they are most often associated with what we call immunity. It’s their job to make sure that we are protected from external invaders such as viruses or the effects of weather. The environment, stress, diet and unexpressed emotions all contribute to an imbalance that affects the Lungs ability to function optimally. As a result we develop conditions like asthma, allergies, sinusitis and eczema.

Acupuncture is an excellent alternative or complementary option for the treatment of respiratory issues. By treating both the symptoms and the cause of imbalance the body is able to recover quicker as it becomes less susceptible infection and inflammation.

Acupuncture is part of a refined healthcare system that has been used for thousands of years in China. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) views the body as a dynamic system in which qi (pronounced chee), or energy which is essential for health and life itself, flows throughout the body along pathways. It is the disruption of this flow that is responsible for disease. Thin needles are inserted at various points along these channels to stimulate and balance the flow of qi in the body. Acupuncture is used when a person experiences pain, becomes ill or feels out of balance.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is safe when performed by a trained and licensed professional. The 1997 National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference on Acupuncture stated, “one of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions.” The needles used by acupuncturists are sterile single use disposable acupuncture needles made of high quality stainless steel.

What does acupuncture treat?

Because acupuncture works to rebalance the body’s systems it is able to treat a wide variety of symptoms and conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture’s effectiveness in the treatment of many common disorders including:
Allergies Asthma Insomnia Depression Flu
Bell’s palsy Menopause Hypertension Sinusitis GERD
Stress/Anxiety Addictions Fibromyalgia Arthritis PMS
Headache Fatigue Paralysis Digestive Disorder

I’m healthy. I don’t need acupuncture.

Many people don’t know that acupuncture can be used to prevent illness and slow down the aging process. So even if you have no immediate health concerns, acupuncture is beneficial for overall wellness. It strengthens our immune system and reduces the effects of stress by resetting our central and parasympathetic nervous systems. To ensure good health it is recommended you see an acupuncturist at the change of each season.

How many treatments will I need before I feel better?

Each person is different. Some feel a positive change after one treatment. Acute conditions may be alleviated with just a few treatments. Chronic conditions may require several months of consistent treatment to achieve results.

I don’t like needles. Can I still get a treatment?

If you are fearful of needles you can still benefit from Oriental Medicine. Treatments are modified to your comfort level. There are several needle free techniques, such as acupressure, tui na (medical massage) and herbs that can be used to provide relief of symptoms.

What else do I need to know about acupuncture?

Acupuncture is not a miracle cure, nor a "quick fix." Some patients may experience immediate results, while others may not notice any progress until later in the course of treatment. It is important to remember that acupuncture’s holistic approach addresses the underlying causes of a problem rather than masking or alleviating a symptom. This means that it often takes time to have a considerable effect. Therefore it not only requires trust and acceptance of the process, but most importantly a commitment to the healing process itself.

Learn how acupuncture and Oriental Medicine can your improve your health and learn what you can do to support the health of your lungs. Mini acupuncture treatments will be offered in a group setting after the presentation. This treatment will help detoxify the body, benefit the Lungs and improve well-being. Sterile disposable needles will be used to needle points on the ears and scalp, so there is no need to remove clothing. By needling acupoints on the ear, internal healing processes are facilitated. This is because the ear is a self-contained micro system that can affect the whole body. When the ear is needled the body’s self-regulating homeostatic mechanisms shift into gear -regulating physiological processes that have been overactive or diminished.

When: October 09th, 2009

Time: 4.30-6.30 PM

Cost $10

Where:
Solay Wellness Salt Community Room
8049 N Ridgeway Ave
Skokie, IL 60076
www.solaywellness.com

Treatments are 15 minutes. Therefore, it is essential that we become aware of the ways our bodies work so we can learn how to take care of ourselves. The key is a supportive environment. The process is one of shared responsibility between patient and practioner with the ultimate goal of reaching a more balanced state of being.

Lisa received her Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine from the Midwest College of Oriental Medicine in Chicago. She is a national board certified acupuncturist licensed in the state of Illinois and holds a Bachelors degree in Sociology from Beloit College. A recent recall of ionic salt lamps by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission noted faulty cords caused some issues.

We get the same question a lot and this recall is a good example. Is there a difference in salt lamps available and of course we know there is. Not only the salt crystal quality but also the light unit and base lamps come with. Without any doubt, we spend extra on our light cords and offer a dimmer cord (allowing one to adjust the ambiance and light output) Our cords are UL listed and are very high quality, like all of our Solay salt lamps.

And your purchase of Solay salt lamps supports fair trade, insuring health insurance, good living wages and holiday for all that make our beautiful Solay salt lamps.

Purple Salt and Tiny Drops of Water in Meteorites

Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology

Some meteorites, especially those called carbonaceous chondrites, have been greatly affected by reaction with water on the asteroids in which they formed. These reactions, which took place during the first 10 million years of the Solar System's history, formed assorted water-bearing minerals, but nobody has found any of the water that caused the alteration. Nobody, that is, until now. Michael Zolensky and team of scientists from the Johnson Space Center in Houston and Virginia Tech (Blacksburg, Virginia) discovered strikingly purple sodium chloride (table salt) crystals in two meteorites. The salt contains tiny droplets of salt water (with some other elements dissolved in it). The salt is as old as the Solar System, so the water trapped inside the salt is also ancient. It might give us clues to the nature of the water that so pervasively altered carbonaceous chondrites and formed oceans on Europa and perhaps other icy satellites. However, how the salt got into the two meteorites and how it trapped the water remains a mystery - at least for now.

Fresh Meteorites

The first meteorite found to contain salt crystals smacked into a street in Monahans, Texas, at about 7 p.m. on March 22, 1998. Seven boys playing basketball witnessed the fall, which landed about 25 meters from them. They brought it to the police station soon after it fell. A Ward County Deputy Sheriff found another stone the next day, embedded in a road about 250 meters from the first one. The fall was reported on television and in newspapers (see articles from the Pecos Enterprise listed below), and when Everett Gibson of the Johnson Space Center heard about it, he immediately set out for Monahans, a small town about 30 miles west of Odessa in West Texas. Everett is from West Texas himself, from the town of Seagraves, located north of Odessa, the site of an ancient impact crater. In fact, a meteorite was found in his hometown and others were found in Brownfield to the north of Seagraves and Seminole to the south. He arrived in Monahans around noon on March 24, and brought the first piece back to Houston the same day. Thus, the sample was inside a clean, dry laboratory within 48 hours of its fall. This minimized any chance for contamination or weathering of the specimen.

People sometimes argue over ownership of meteorites. Because the rocks landed on public streets, Monahans officials claimed that both rocks belonged to the city. At the time of the discovery, Gibson promised that they would be returned to the city. However, a dispute soon developed, and the seven boys claimed ownership of the specimen that disrupted their basketball game. The city finally relented, and kept the second piece to put on display. After NASA returned the first piece to the boys, the meteorite was auctioned on the Internet (by Naturalhistoryauction.com) in July 1998. A businessman bought it for $23,000.

1998 was a good year for salty meteorites. The Zag meteorite fell on either August 4 or 5, 1998 in Morocco, in the dry Sahara desert. Fossil hunters witnessed its fall, and found it shortly afterwards. It was a large, 175 kg meteorite, that broke into pieces when it fell. The meteorite was apparently acquired by a dealer shortly thereafter. It seems to be available for sale by several meteorite dealers and samples have been obtained by museums, as well as by Mike Zolensky at the Johnson Space Center.

Salty Samples of Asteroid Surfaces..read more

see our collection of beautiful Purple Solay Persian salt lamps

Wellness Focused Community Radiates Positive Energy on 9/11 with a Grand Opening Skokie, IL

August , 10 2009 - Three local businesses - Solay Wellness, Spark of the Heart, and Mystic Fountain - decide to replace anger and sadness with love and celebration by holding their Grand Opening on September 11, 2009 in Skokie.

"We all believe strongly that by working together to build a wellness community we can help more people live heathier and happier," says Isabella, founder of Solay Wellness. Because we spend so much time in bed, we are can be exposed to many different chemicals in our sheets and pillows. Most people do not realize that a cause of their health problems and lack of sleep may be the result of their bedding. Without a good night’s sleep, people are less alert, can suffer from irritability and concentration problems, and can even suffer from depression.

Cotton is the most intensely pesticide sprayed field crop. Cotton from these fields is found in manufactured bed sheets and pillows. As well, most bed linens are sprayed with formaldehyde to reduce wrinkling. Inhaling chemicals from manufactured products can cause breathing problems, rashes and other skin irritations, disrupt sleep patterns, and are toxic to the body. Fortunately, there are now healthy alternatives that can improve one’s sleep and reduce illnesses.

Organic Cotton Sheets

Organic cotton sheets are made from certified organic cotton grown without the use of chemicals and pesticides. The cotton used in the production of these sheets are toxin free, all-natural, and unbleached. As you breathe while you sleep, you will not be inhaling toxins thereby eliminating lung, breathing, and allergy illnesses. As well, people with asthma will not be breathing in toxins and dust mites that can stimulate allergic reactions and asthma attacks. Organic sheets contain natural dyes or not any dyes at all, which is beneficial for people who are allergic to chemical dyes. The result of breathing in clean air is improved health and a better night’s sleep. You will wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. People with breathing problems will find themselves having a comfortable night sleep because they are breathing better with no disruptions such as wheezing and coughing fits in the middle of the night. As well, organic quality sheets come from fair trade companies from such areas as India.

Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillows

Buckwheat hulls are the husks that protect the buckwheat kernel. They are not wheat, but a fruit related to rhubarb. The buckwheat used in organic buckwheat pillows is organically grown without using chemical fertilizers or pesticides. They are non-allergenic; resist mold, mildew, bacteria, and dust mites which cause respiratory illnesses thereby disturbing one’s sleep. Chiropractors and other health professionals often recommend Buckwheat Hull Pillows to alleviate their patients’ neck pain, back pain, headaches, muscle strain, snoring, TMJ syndrome, and other conditions affecting sleep. This is because buckwheat hull can shift and re-shape as a person sleeps and moves so that the pillow molds and contours with the position of the head and neck. Chiropractors especially approve of organic buckwheat hull pillows because they conform to head and neck providing excellent cervical support.

When using manufactured cotton products for bedding, many people report irritating respiratory dysfunctions, headaches, rashes, and sleep pattern disturbances. The production and buying of organic cotton sheets and buckwheat hull pillows is not only beneficial for people, but also the environment. Chemical sprays from manufactured cotton goods, releases toxins in the air and depletes the earth ozone layer. You will sleep soundly knowing you are protecting the environment as well improving your own health.

For a beautiful line of organic cotton sheets, pillows and more: visit Solay Wellness

Exfoliation Removes Dead Skin Cells and Restores Skin’s Natural Glow

As we age, our skin cells “turn over” at a decreased rate, causing clogged pores, tired-looking skin and even signs of aging to occur, as dead skin cells literally pile up on our skin. Chlorine, a manufactured chemical, was first used to make the deadly mustard gas during the First World War Ever since chlorine was modified to be used for domestic purposes; more researchers are discovering that the chemical poses a serious health risk to humans and the environment. Research conducted in the U.S., Canada, Norway, Australia, and Belgium has linked chlorine byproducts found in swimming pools to increased rates of bladder cancer, lung damage, asthma, stillbirths, and miscarriages.

HEALTHY CHLORINE ALTERNATIVES: SALT CHLORINATORS

Rather than continuing to use harmful chemical pool and spa hot tub products, many people are turning to a natural way to keep their swimming pool, spa and hot tubes clean and healthy. Salt Chlorinators are an efficient alternative that is fast becoming a healthier choice. Salt water sanitization systems are a natural way to keep your water crystal clear and well-sanitized.

HOW A SALT WATER CHLORINATOR WORKS

The salt water chlorinator contains a salt cell. The gentle saline water is sanitized through a special process called electrolysis. The salt makes the water conductive so that electricity can pass between plates contained within the salt cell. As the water passes between the plates, electrolysis occurs, triggering a chemical reaction which releases chlorine from the salt. By adding small quantities of a granulated salt that is much like table salt, common chlorine is created. During the process, the chlorine is eventually converted back to salt. Therefore, the salt does not become depleted so you only need to top it off once or twice a year.

BENEFITS

A salt water chlorinator automatically keeps your pool water continuously sanitized and healthy. You will no longer have to store chlorine packages, shock treatment products, or algaecides, which can be a safety hazard for children and pets. The lower level of chlorine and natural salt in the pool system eliminates sore and burning red eyes, green hair, skin irritation, and overpowering chlorine odors. You will also feel refreshed and your skin will retain its soft texture. In other words, you will not feel like you just took a bath in chemical soup.

Some frequently asked questions...

Won’t the salt rust out the equipment?

No, the salt will not damage the equipment any more than chemicals. Equipment wears out with normal use. Its wear is no different than other equipment. In some cases, it is even better then when chlorine or bromine tablets are used due to their tendency to lower the total alkalinity and pH which makes the water corrosive.

I have been told that this will affect my warranty?

This is common sales pitch for the purchase of chemicals. Saltwater chlorination will not have an unusually high negative impact on your equipment then chemicals and therefore it should not affect the warranty. Since the water is still considered fresh water, it is compatible with all standard pool equipment (pumps, filters, heaters, ionisers, etc.)

Is this like swimming in the ocean?

No, the seas and oceans have about 20,000 parts per million (ppm) of salt in the water, while a saltwater pool has only about 3000 parts per million salt. At 3000 ppm, you generally can barely even taste the salt. In fact, the water is less salty than your tears. Any water under 6000 ppm is still considered fresh water.

Does it change the colour of the water?

No, there is no change to the water colour. In fact the water is crystal clear. A salt system gives your pool the best water quality you have ever seen.

Does it leave the same skin feeling and smell as chlorine or bromine systems?

No, and this is another benefit of the salt system. Many pool and spa owners dislike that strong smell of chemicals after a leisurely spa or swim, this system leave your skin felling smooth and fresh with no appreciable after-smell.

I assume that you power this unit from a 120 V ac source? Can you leave it in the hot tub while you are using it?

Yes, you can plug it into a GFCI (Ground Fault Control Interrupter) 120v plug-in while it is in the hot tub/spa or pool. It is meant to run 24/7.

"The ColorChlor requires a GFCI protected 120VAC outlet. Even though the ColorChlor power supply is weatherproof it is highly recommended to keep it in a water tight enclosure. Water proof components are available at most hardware stores." ColorChlor 4 - TechniChlor Operation Manual

Where does the salt go?

We add granulated salt (looks a lot like table salt, but without any additives) directly to the pool or through the skimmer. The salt quickly dissolves in the pool or spa water.

Will I save money?

Since you are not using processed packaged pool chlorine and other chemicals, it will save money in the long run. However, the alluring reason to go with a saltwater pool and spa system is because of the water clarity and fantastic water quality.

What affect will it have on the environment?

The environment will appreciate that you are using common everyday elements: water, salt, bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar. There are no concentrated harsh strong smelling chemicals going into the environment.

What kind of salt can I use? I already have pool salt, can I use it?

Yes, pool salt and any other salts that do contain additives can be used. Regular free flow table salt may contain iodine and therefore should not be used. Check the label to see if it contains iodine before using. Canning and pickling salt along with rock salt used for making home made ice cream can also be used. Himalayan salt is also an excellent option.

How does it work?

Here is a basic explanation. Remember your high school chemistry class? What you are using is NaCl (salt/sodium chloride) in water. Through electrolysis the saltwater chlorinator separates out the salt (Na) sodium and leaving behind the chlorine (Cl). As a result you have salty water that has been chlorinated.

When your ready to experience the difference in soaking in a sea of health, visit solaywellness.com

Clay Pot Cooking Recipes

VEGETARIAN CHILI

6-qt clay pot - organic vegetables, herbs, etc.

saute olive oil for about 10 minutes to bring out flavor of the following:

2 cups (total) chopped herbs & onions (cilantro, basil, parsley, oregano, thyme, green onions, regular onions

3 cups (total) chopped zucchini, yellow squash

1 vegetarian bouillon cube (2 oz.)

Add:
1 - 28 oz. can organic diced undrained tomatoes (or use fresh chopped organic tomatoes)
1 - 16 oz. can organic diced undrained tomatoes
1 - 16 oz. can organic tomato sauce
3 - 15-16oz. cans undrained Eden organic beans - black beans, red kidney beans, pinto beans

1 cup vegetarian broth (I use Pacific)
2 cups chopped shitake mushrooms

Bring to a boil, and then on low or simmer - for 1 1/2 hours

After finish cooking and pot is turned off, THEN add Solay himalayan crystal salt (2 tsp. according to taste), 1 tbsp. chanterele seasoning, 1 tsp. Gently move the pan while popping continues.

When popping slows, remove the lid, and dump the popcorn into a big bowl.

Heat the butter or butter substitute in the pan, and add the salt.

Pour it over the popcorn and mix.

Using a butter substitute and the highest quality Himalayan salt ensures a tasty snack that won't leave you feeling sluggish afterward. You don't want to know what movie theater popcorn has in it, and the scientists who studied microwave popcorn resigned in fear. Make this relatively healthy popcorn and enjoy. Peace and long life!

Whats in Your Water

One of the reasons for this is that Americans pride themselves in having very high quality water from every tap and assume that all water is the same. A thorough study of water in America and the world in general tells a different story. A few well-placed hours on the Internet show that the world is in an unprecedented water quality crisis as well as water shortage. Depending on what part of the country one lives in, it is easy to find trace amounts of chlorination byproducts, organics, nitrates, pesticides, heavy metals, radioactive compounds, petrochemicals and parasites coming from the local municipal water supply. If you get your water from a private well, all of these contaminants except for the chlorination byproducts can be present.

Toxins
The toxins and free radicals in these waters are made significantly more toxic to humans by the addition of chlorine -- a compound mandated by the public health department. The Environmental Protection Agency now reports that individuals who drink and bath in chlorinated surface waters (i.e., water from lakes, rivers and shallow wells) have a 50% greater likelihood of getting cancer in their lifetime.[1] [2] Even if you think you are safe because you drink bottled water, you may be surprised to learn that one can absorb up to 600% more contaminants in your body in a ten-minute shower than in all the water consumed in a day.[3]

MTBE
In January 2000, Sixty Minutes, the investigative TV program, reported that as many as 100 million Americans were drinking water contaminated with MTBE, a gasoline additive that has been leaching into our water supplies since 1992. MTBE is believed to cause cancer in concentrations as low as 10 parts per billion and unfortunately local water companies are helpless to remove it. Because of such contaminants, two out of every five households now have a water filter or drink bottled water, as will be discussed later, with no assurance of safety. The problem is that the average consumer and even most medical professionals do not know what is the best way to treat water or the best source of water to drink.

To better understand the importance of water in maintaining optimum health and what the best source of water for your family's health is, read The Forgotten Secret of Health.

When your ready to purchase the best water filtration systems for your shower, sink or house, visit Solay Wellness to learn more http://www.natural-salt-lamps.com/water-filtration-salt-chlorination.html
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] “Cancer Incidence and Trihalomethane Concentrations in the Public Drinking Water System”, George L. This is based on the premise that a high sodium intake creates high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks, arterial, and kidney problems. Salt is high in sodium. But sodium is essential for proper absorption of other major nutrients and functioning of nerves and muscles, as well as being necessary for balancing water and minerals in the body.

Lately there have been studies that strongly question the research on sodium hazards, as well as the recommended maximum sodium intakes from that research. There has been a survey in New York, conducted over several years on hypertension prone locals, which showed that those with high sodium intakes had proportionately less heart attacks than those who were put on low sodium diets! And now there are even MD`s who claim that the right type of salt, unrefined, has more health benefits than health hazards.

A major confusion is that only refined commercial and household salt is known as salt to most of medical science and consumers. It is the most prevalent, by far. Refined salt, stripped of its natural mineral structure, is virtually all sodium. As a matter of fact, it is 97% to 99% sodium! That`s why it is called Sodium Chloride. Processed foods are laced with Sodium Chloride refined salt as well as with other types of sodium, such as sodium benzoate, sodium nitrate, and the notorious monosodium glutamate (MSG). So if you are concerned about your sodium levels, then cut out processed foods!

Part of the process for refined salt, or commercial table salt, involves the use of aluminum, ferro cyanide and bleach. These are all toxic materials that your body takes in with refined, commercial salt. And because of that process, almost all the vital minerals that real, unrefined salt can offer are removed! One or two servings of refined salt won`t send you to the grave. But continued almost daily use will avail you to the perils of aluminum toxicity. Ferro cyanide is listed by the EPA as a toxic material for human consumption. You are probably aware of the hazards to human health of chlorine, which is used to bleach the salt.

There's more on aluminum toxicity here: www.hbci.com/~wenonah/hydro/al.htm

According to Dr. David Brownstein, author of Salt Your Way to Health, unrefined salt is an excellent detoxification aid, as well as a provider of mineral nutrients in a naturally bio-available balance. There are usually around 80 minerals and essential trace elements in unrefined, organic salt. Soil grown food is lacking in many of these because the soil has been depleted of trace elements and minerals. Some of the major minerals included with unrefined salt are: Magnesium (a very essential metabolic agent), calcium, potassium, and sulfate. Obviously, sodium is present also, but it comprises only 50% of the total mineral content rather than the 99% sodium in refined table salt.

Regular consumer table salt, refined, sometimes has iodine added in order to promote thyroid health. Dr. Brownstien has devoted a good deal of his practice and research on thyroid and glandular health. He says there is less iodized salt now than before, and the amount of iodine in iodized salt is insufficient for optimum thyroid health anyway. Iodine is an important agent for glandular health, and it is also scarcely present in our food anymore. Unless you eat a lot of seafood and roll the dice with mercury!

Dr. Brownstein strongly advocates the use of unrefined, organic salt with iodine supplements, preferably a combination of potassium iodide and iodine. He maintains that these two dietary items contribute largely toward optimum endocrine health, which is vital for a strong immune system.

Unrefined salt has a distinctively different look from refined salt. It is usually too course to be used in salt shaker. You may want to invest in a salt grinder. And it is usually not very white. Off white is more common, even pink or gray for unrefined pure salt. The extreme white of common household or commercial salt is a result of bleaching. But buyer beware, some so called sea salts offered on line and especially in health food stores are at least partially processed. Avoid sea salt that is too white and too fine as a rule of thumb.

If you are very concerned about getting the purest available product, and you don`t have anyone`s advice you can trust, look for "organic certification". Since salt is mined or taken from salt water beds, organic has different implications than produce and animal product organic requirements. But the standards are there and they are strict. The two groups that certify salt as organic are BIO-GRO of New Zealand, and Nature & Progresre of France.

You may come across an analysis of organic salt minerals, or a commentary on such, that mentions fluoride as a constituent. But there are two types of fluoride. One, Calcium Fluoride, is an element that occurs as a natural process over time within the earth`s soil, rock, and water areas. This is the fluoride that originally was claimed as a deterrent against tooth decay. Wikipedia notes that while all other fluorides are dangerous for human consumption, calcium fluoride is not. And it`s Calcium Fluoride that would be in any unrefined salt analysis.

The other fluoride, Sodium Fluoride, is a synthetic, poisonous fluoride. It has been used as rat poison. It`s a waste by-product of the aluminum industry, fertilizer industry, and nuclear industry. It`s their way of picking up a lot of easy bucks by selling it to municipalities for their water supplies instead of suffering the expense of getting rid of it. That`s the stuff that`s been going into our water supplies, causing health problems, and assisting in the dumbing down of America. Either the dentists didn`t distinguish between those two, or perhaps they didn`t even know there were two types of fluoride.

It appears that organically produced, unrefined salt should be a healthy addition to our diets. It offers bio-available, balanced minerals that aren`t naturally present in our food chain. It does not contain the poisons of industry that are a part of refined salt. Yes, too much of a good thing can be bad. But again, the sodium of refined salt and other food additives is curbed best by eliminating processed foods, which contain several toxic sodium sources as well as unrefined salt, from the diet. Dr. Brownstein`s advice, using organic, unrefined salt with a little bit of iodine supplementation, seems like a natural and economical way to boost one`s immune system.

Sources:

Crusader Health News, January 18, 2009 - Interview of Dr. David Brownstein
Salt Institute, www.saltinstitute.org
Rutgers (New Brunswick) Health Education Newsletter, 2002
Wikipedia

Buy Pure Himalayan salt here

Healthy Clay Cooking Pots and Bakeware

As society moves toward a healthier environment and lifestyle, consumers are now looking for ways to improve the quality of their food. When we think about health food, we often overlook the items that we use to cook and bake our food.

Researchers have discovered that traditional cookware contain substances that are harmful to our health. For instance, not only will acidic foods cooked in aluminum leave a metallic taste in the mouth, but there is a risk of heavy metal poisoning. Cookware that contains Teflon (tetrafluoride), a fluoride product that produces a toxic gas when heated to over 500°F, can cause an illness known as the Teflon-flu. When cooking healthy food, people will often saturate the pan with butter, oil, or cooking spray which turns healthy food into an unhealthy meal. There are other safety concerns when using traditional cookware that includes pots boiling over, scorched pans, and burning your hands on the burners. For those who grill food, they have to watch for sudden bursts of flames and scorched food.

To create healthier meals, eco-friendly companies are coming out with safer and healthier cookware. One healthy alternative is actually a very old cooking product.

Craftsman from Pomaire, Chile have been making unglazed clay cookware since the 19th century. These cookware products are healthier because little or no oil is needed as the food steams in natural juices. Clay pots also hold the nutrients whereas foods that are boiled often lose nutrients during the cooking process. Foods cooked in clay dishes retain more flavor than traditional cookware. Clay pots are also free of all chemicals that include lead and aluminum. They are safe to use in the oven with a temperature of up to 450F, in the microwave, and on the stovetop

Being porous, the water is released during cooking allowing the food to remain moist. During the cooking process natural juices are created. As the food cooks, the juices increase the steam which creates a moist cooking state. The clay distributes and retains the heat. The result is juicy and flavorful food. Clay is healthy because it seals in the nutrients so you do not have to add fats. As well, salts and seasonings are able to penetrate deeper in the food.

Cooking in unglazed clay is an ancient tradition with modern day health benefits. Clay cookware is still the most popular cooking choice in many parts of the world. Whether you steam-cooked vegetables, cook meats and fish, make soups, and delicious baked goods, this ancient method of cooking is a modern and healthy way of cooking. Nasal Irrigation Can Ease Allergy Symptoms

courtesy of the New York Times:

Pollen forecasters are predicting a heavy season this year, so allergy sufferers may be struggling to find relief.

For some, the neti pot, a nasal irrigator that resembles a small teapot, has become an alternative remedy. While it is not nearly as convenient as popping a pill or using a spray, several recent studies have found that nasal irrigation can reduce symptoms of allergies and other nasal problems.

One benefit is that irrigation can clear nasal passages without dryness or “rebound” congestion, which occurs when overuse of decongestants leads to dependence and irritated tissue.

In one independent study in 2008, researchers examined a group of children with severe allergies. They found that regular nasal irrigation with a mild saline solution significantly eased symptoms and helped reduce the need for steroid nasal sprays. A 2007 study at the University of Michigan looked at 121 adults with chronic nasal and sinus problems. Over two months, the scientists found that those treated with nasal irrigation reported greater improvements than those treated with a spray.

read complete story and then visit our beautiful hand made neti nasal pots with free Himalayan salt and learn how to use neti pots.

<link rel="related" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/14/health/14real.html?no_interstitial" title="Great News! This originally comes from here. I added some metric conversions and a few notes. These sounded so good, that I made them at three in the morning. Try them!

Ingredients

3/5 cup (150 grams) finely-chopped almonds

1 3/4 Cup (400 grams) sugar

1 1/3 cup (300 grams) flour

4 eggs (or egg substitute if vegan)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

2 teaspoon baking powder

icing sugar, for dusting

Procedure

Sift all the dry ingredients into a bowl then stir in the nuts.

Beat the eggs in a separate bowl then add to the dry ingredients and mix well to combine.

Turn the batter into a shallow baking pan that's been greased and floured.

Place in an oven preheated to 350F (180C) and bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Allow to cool in the pan, then turn out onto a chopping board and cut into squares whilst still warm.

Dust with icing sugar and store in an air-tight tin.

Notes

If you don't have cardamom, just use a bit more cinnamon and/or nutmeg to taste. If you don't like icing sugar, don't worry about it.

- Austin seraphin
