Chlorine, a manufactured chemical, was first used to make the deadly mustard gas during the First World War Ever since chlorine was modified to be used for domestic purposes; more researchers are discovering that the chemical poses a serious health risk to humans and the environment. Research conducted in the U.S., Canada, Norway, Australia, and Belgium has linked chlorine byproducts found in swimming pools to increased rates of bladder cancer, lung damage, asthma, stillbirths, and miscarriages.

HEALTHY CHLORINE ALTERNATIVES: SALT CHLORINATORS

Rather than continuing to use harmful chemical pool and spa hot tub products, many people are turning to a natural way to keep their swimming pool, spa and hot tubes clean and healthy. Salt Chlorinators are an efficient alternative that is fast becoming a healthier choice. Salt water sanitization systems are a natural way to keep your water crystal clear and well-sanitized.

HOW A SALT WATER CHLORINATOR WORKS

The salt water chlorinator contains a salt cell. The gentle saline water is sanitized through a special process called electrolysis. The salt makes the water conductive so that electricity can pass between plates contained within the salt cell. As the water passes between the plates, electrolysis occurs, triggering a chemical reaction which releases chlorine from the salt. By adding small quantities of a granulated salt that is much like table salt, common chlorine is created. During the process, the chlorine is eventually converted back to salt. Therefore, the salt does not become depleted so you only need to top it off once or twice a year.

BENEFITS

A salt water chlorinator automatically keeps your pool water continuously sanitized and healthy. You will no longer have to store chlorine packages, shock treatment products, or algaecides, which can be a safety hazard for children and pets. The lower level of chlorine and natural salt in the pool system eliminates sore and burning red eyes, green hair, skin irritation, and overpowering chlorine odors. You will also feel refreshed and your skin will retain its soft texture. In other words, you will not feel like you just took a bath in chemical soup.

Some frequently asked questions...

Won’t the salt rust out the equipment?

No, the salt will not damage the equipment any more than chemicals. Equipment wears out with normal use. Its wear is no different than other equipment. In some cases, it is even better then when chlorine or bromine tablets are used due to their tendency to lower the total alkalinity and pH which makes the water corrosive.

I have been told that this will affect my warranty?

This is common sales pitch for the purchase of chemicals. Saltwater chlorination will not have an unusually high negative impact on your equipment then chemicals and therefore it should not affect the warranty. Since the water is still considered fresh water, it is compatible with all standard pool equipment (pumps, filters, heaters, ionisers, etc.)

Is this like swimming in the ocean?

No, the seas and oceans have about 20,000 parts per million (ppm) of salt in the water, while a saltwater pool has only about 3000 parts per million salt. At 3000 ppm, you generally can barely even taste the salt. In fact, the water is less salty than your tears. Any water under 6000 ppm is still considered fresh water.

Does it change the colour of the water?

No, there is no change to the water colour. In fact the water is crystal clear. A salt system gives your pool the best water quality you have ever seen.

Does it leave the same skin feeling and smell as chlorine or bromine systems?

No, and this is another benefit of the salt system. Many pool and spa owners dislike that strong smell of chemicals after a leisurely spa or swim, this system leave your skin felling smooth and fresh with no appreciable after-smell.

I assume that you power this unit from a 120 V ac source? Can you leave it in the hot tub while you are using it?

Yes, you can plug it into a GFCI (Ground Fault Control Interrupter) 120v plug-in while it is in the hot tub/spa or pool. It is meant to run 24/7.

"The ColorChlor requires a GFCI protected 120VAC outlet. Even though the ColorChlor power supply is weatherproof it is highly recommended to keep it in a water tight enclosure. Water proof components are available at most hardware stores." ColorChlor 4 - TechniChlor Operation Manual

Where does the salt go?

We add granulated salt (looks a lot like table salt, but without any additives) directly to the pool or through the skimmer. The salt quickly dissolves in the pool or spa water.

Will I save money?

Since you are not using processed packaged pool chlorine and other chemicals, it will save money in the long run. However, the alluring reason to go with a saltwater pool and spa system is because of the water clarity and fantastic water quality.

What affect will it have on the environment?

The environment will appreciate that you are using common everyday elements: water, salt, bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar. There are no concentrated harsh strong smelling chemicals going into the environment.

What kind of salt can I use? I already have pool salt, can I use it?

Yes, pool salt and any other salts that do contain additives can be used. Regular free flow table salt may contain iodine and therefore should not be used. Check the label to see if it contains iodine before using. Canning and pickling salt along with rock salt used for making home made ice cream can also be used. Himalayan salt is also an excellent option.

How does it work?

Here is a basic explanation. Remember your high school chemistry class? What you are using is NaCl (salt/sodium chloride) in water. Through electrolysis the saltwater chlorinator separates out the salt (Na) sodium and leaving behind the chlorine (Cl). As a result you have salty water that has been chlorinated.

When your ready to experience the difference in soaking in a sea of health, visit solaywellness.com

Clay Pot Cooking Recipes

VEGETARIAN CHILI

6-qt clay pot - organic vegetables, herbs, etc.

saute olive oil for about 10 minutes to bring out flavor of the following:

2 cups (total) chopped herbs & onions (cilantro, basil, parsley, oregano, thyme, green onions, regular onions

3 cups (total) chopped zucchini, yellow squash

1 vegetarian bouillon cube (2 oz.)

Add:
1 - 28 oz. can organic diced undrained tomatoes (or use fresh chopped organic tomatoes)
1 - 16 oz. can organic diced undrained tomatoes
1 - 16 oz. can organic tomato sauce
3 - 15-16oz. cans undrained Eden organic beans - black beans, red kidney beans, pinto beans

1 cup vegetarian broth (I use Pacific)
2 cups chopped shitake mushrooms

Bring to a boil, and then on low or simmer - for 1 1/2 hours

After finish cooking and pot is turned off, THEN add Solay himalayan crystal salt (2 tsp. according to taste), 1 tbsp. chanterele seasoning, 1 tsp. Keep the lid slightly ajar to let steam escape. Gently move the pan while popping continues.

When popping slows, remove the lid, and dump the popcorn into a big bowl.

Heat the butter or butter substitute in the pan, and add the salt.

Pour it over the popcorn and mix.

Using a butter substitute and the highest quality Himalayan salt ensures a tasty snack that won't leave you feeling sluggish afterward. You don't want to know what movie theater popcorn has in it, and the scientists who studied microwave popcorn resigned in fear. Make this relatively healthy popcorn and enjoy. A thorough study of water in America and the world in general tells a different story. A few well-placed hours on the Internet show that the world is in an unprecedented water quality crisis as well as water shortage. Depending on what part of the country one lives in, it is easy to find trace amounts of chlorination byproducts, organics, nitrates, pesticides, heavy metals, radioactive compounds, petrochemicals and parasites coming from the local municipal water supply. If you get your water from a private well, all of these contaminants except for the chlorination byproducts can be present.

Toxins
The toxins and free radicals in these waters are made significantly more toxic to humans by the addition of chlorine -- a compound mandated by the public health department. The Environmental Protection Agency now reports that individuals who drink and bath in chlorinated surface waters (i.e., water from lakes, rivers and shallow wells) have a 50% greater likelihood of getting cancer in their lifetime.[1] [2] Even if you think you are safe because you drink bottled water, you may be surprised to learn that one can absorb up to 600% more contaminants in your body in a ten-minute shower than in all the water consumed in a day.[3]

MTBE
In January 2000, Sixty Minutes, the investigative TV program, reported that as many as 100 million Americans were drinking water contaminated with MTBE, a gasoline additive that has been leaching into our water supplies since 1992. MTBE is believed to cause cancer in concentrations as low as 10 parts per billion and unfortunately local water companies are helpless to remove it. Because of such contaminants, two out of every five households now have a water filter or drink bottled water, as will be discussed later, with no assurance of safety. The problem is that the average consumer and even most medical professionals do not know what is the best way to treat water or the best source of water to drink.

To better understand the importance of water in maintaining optimum health and what the best source of water for your family's health is, read The Forgotten Secret of Health.

When your ready to purchase the best water filtration systems for your shower, sink or house, visit Solay Wellness to learn more http://www.natural-salt-lamps.com/water-filtration-salt-chlorination.html
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] “Cancer Incidence and Trihalomethane Concentrations in the Public Drinking Water System”, George L. This is based on the premise that a high sodium intake creates high blood pressure, which can lead to heart attacks, arterial, and kidney problems. Salt is high in sodium. But sodium is essential for proper absorption of other major nutrients and functioning of nerves and muscles, as well as being necessary for balancing water and minerals in the body.

Lately there have been studies that strongly question the research on sodium hazards, as well as the recommended maximum sodium intakes from that research. There has been a survey in New York, conducted over several years on hypertension prone locals, which showed that those with high sodium intakes had proportionately less heart attacks than those who were put on low sodium diets! And now there are even MD`s who claim that the right type of salt, unrefined, has more health benefits than health hazards.

A major confusion is that only refined commercial and household salt is known as salt to most of medical science and consumers. It is the most prevalent, by far. Refined salt, stripped of its natural mineral structure, is virtually all sodium. As a matter of fact, it is 97% to 99% sodium! That`s why it is called Sodium Chloride. Processed foods are laced with Sodium Chloride refined salt as well as with other types of sodium, such as sodium benzoate, sodium nitrate, and the notorious monosodium glutamate (MSG). So if you are concerned about your sodium levels, then cut out processed foods!

Part of the process for refined salt, or commercial table salt, involves the use of aluminum, ferro cyanide and bleach. These are all toxic materials that your body takes in with refined, commercial salt. And because of that process, almost all the vital minerals that real, unrefined salt can offer are removed! One or two servings of refined salt won`t send you to the grave. But continued almost daily use will avail you to the perils of aluminum toxicity. Ferro cyanide is listed by the EPA as a toxic material for human consumption. You are probably aware of the hazards to human health of chlorine, which is used to bleach the salt.

There's more on aluminum toxicity here: www.hbci.com/~wenonah/hydro/al.htm

According to Dr. David Brownstein, author of Salt Your Way to Health, unrefined salt is an excellent detoxification aid, as well as a provider of mineral nutrients in a naturally bio-available balance. There are usually around 80 minerals and essential trace elements in unrefined, organic salt. Soil grown food is lacking in many of these because the soil has been depleted of trace elements and minerals. Some of the major minerals included with unrefined salt are: Magnesium (a very essential metabolic agent), calcium, potassium, and sulfate. Obviously, sodium is present also, but it comprises only 50% of the total mineral content rather than the 99% sodium in refined table salt.

Regular consumer table salt, refined, sometimes has iodine added in order to promote thyroid health. Dr. Brownstien has devoted a good deal of his practice and research on thyroid and glandular health. He says there is less iodized salt now than before, and the amount of iodine in iodized salt is insufficient for optimum thyroid health anyway. Iodine is an important agent for glandular health, and it is also scarcely present in our food anymore. Unless you eat a lot of seafood and roll the dice with mercury!

Dr. Brownstein strongly advocates the use of unrefined, organic salt with iodine supplements, preferably a combination of potassium iodide and iodine. He maintains that these two dietary items contribute largely toward optimum endocrine health, which is vital for a strong immune system.

Unrefined salt has a distinctively different look from refined salt. It is usually too course to be used in salt shaker. You may want to invest in a salt grinder. And it is usually not very white. Off white is more common, even pink or gray for unrefined pure salt. The extreme white of common household or commercial salt is a result of bleaching. But buyer beware, some so called sea salts offered on line and especially in health food stores are at least partially processed. Avoid sea salt that is too white and too fine as a rule of thumb.

If you are very concerned about getting the purest available product, and you don`t have anyone`s advice you can trust, look for "organic certification". Since salt is mined or taken from salt water beds, organic has different implications than produce and animal product organic requirements. But the standards are there and they are strict. The two groups that certify salt as organic are BIO-GRO of New Zealand, and Nature & Progresre of France.

You may come across an analysis of organic salt minerals, or a commentary on such, that mentions fluoride as a constituent. But there are two types of fluoride. One, Calcium Fluoride, is an element that occurs as a natural process over time within the earth`s soil, rock, and water areas. This is the fluoride that originally was claimed as a deterrent against tooth decay. Wikipedia notes that while all other fluorides are dangerous for human consumption, calcium fluoride is not. And it`s Calcium Fluoride that would be in any unrefined salt analysis.

The other fluoride, Sodium Fluoride, is a synthetic, poisonous fluoride. It has been used as rat poison. It`s a waste by-product of the aluminum industry, fertilizer industry, and nuclear industry. It`s their way of picking up a lot of easy bucks by selling it to municipalities for their water supplies instead of suffering the expense of getting rid of it. That`s the stuff that`s been going into our water supplies, causing health problems, and assisting in the dumbing down of America. Either the dentists didn`t distinguish between those two, or perhaps they didn`t even know there were two types of fluoride.

It appears that organically produced, unrefined salt should be a healthy addition to our diets. It offers bio-available, balanced minerals that aren`t naturally present in our food chain. It does not contain the poisons of industry that are a part of refined salt. Yes, too much of a good thing can be bad. But again, the sodium of refined salt and other food additives is curbed best by eliminating processed foods, which contain several toxic sodium sources as well as unrefined salt, from the diet. Dr. Brownstein`s advice, using organic, unrefined salt with a little bit of iodine supplementation, seems like a natural and economical way to boost one`s immune system.

Sources:

Crusader Health News, January 18, 2009 - Interview of Dr. David Brownstein
Salt Institute, www.saltinstitute.org
Rutgers (New Brunswick) Health Education Newsletter, 2002
Wikipedia

Buy Pure Himalayan salt here

Healthy Clay Cooking Pots and Bakeware

As society moves toward a healthier environment and lifestyle, consumers are now looking for ways to improve the quality of their food. When we think about health food, we often overlook the items that we use to cook and bake our food.

Researchers have discovered that traditional cookware contain substances that are harmful to our health. For instance, not only will acidic foods cooked in aluminum leave a metallic taste in the mouth, but there is a risk of heavy metal poisoning. Cookware that contains Teflon (tetrafluoride), a fluoride product that produces a toxic gas when heated to over 500°F, can cause an illness known as the Teflon-flu. When cooking healthy food, people will often saturate the pan with butter, oil, or cooking spray which turns healthy food into an unhealthy meal. There are other safety concerns when using traditional cookware that includes pots boiling over, scorched pans, and burning your hands on the burners. For those who grill food, they have to watch for sudden bursts of flames and scorched food.

To create healthier meals, eco-friendly companies are coming out with safer and healthier cookware. One healthy alternative is actually a very old cooking product.

Craftsman from Pomaire, Chile have been making unglazed clay cookware since the 19th century. These cookware products are healthier because little or no oil is needed as the food steams in natural juices. Clay pots also hold the nutrients whereas foods that are boiled often lose nutrients during the cooking process. Foods cooked in clay dishes retain more flavor than traditional cookware. Clay pots are also free of all chemicals that include lead and aluminum. They are safe to use in the oven with a temperature of up to 450F, in the microwave, and on the stovetop

Being porous, the water is released during cooking allowing the food to remain moist. During the cooking process natural juices are created. As the food cooks, the juices increase the steam which creates a moist cooking state. The clay distributes and retains the heat. The result is juicy and flavorful food. Clay is healthy because it seals in the nutrients so you do not have to add fats. As well, salts and seasonings are able to penetrate deeper in the food.

Cooking in unglazed clay is an ancient tradition with modern day health benefits. Clay cookware is still the most popular cooking choice in many parts of the world. Whether you steam-cooked vegetables, cook meats and fish, make soups, and delicious baked goods, this ancient method of cooking is a modern and healthy way of cooking. While it is not nearly as convenient as popping a pill or using a spray, several recent studies have found that nasal irrigation can reduce symptoms of allergies and other nasal problems.

One benefit is that irrigation can clear nasal passages without dryness or “rebound” congestion, which occurs when overuse of decongestants leads to dependence and irritated tissue.

In one independent study in 2008, researchers examined a group of children with severe allergies. They found that regular nasal irrigation with a mild saline solution significantly eased symptoms and helped reduce the need for steroid nasal sprays. A 2007 study at the University of Michigan looked at 121 adults with chronic nasal and sinus problems. Over two months, the scientists found that those treated with nasal irrigation reported greater improvements than those treated with a spray.

read complete story and then visit our beautiful hand made neti nasal pots with free Himalayan salt and learn how to use neti pots.

<link rel="related" href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/14/health/14real.html?no_interstitial" title="Great News! This originally comes from here. I added some metric conversions and a few notes. These sounded so good, that I made them at three in the morning. Try them!

Ingredients

3/5 cup (150 grams) finely-chopped almonds

1 3/4 Cup (400 grams) sugar

1 1/3 cup (300 grams) flour

4 eggs (or egg substitute if vegan)

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom

2 teaspoon baking powder

icing sugar, for dusting

Procedure

Sift all the dry ingredients into a bowl then stir in the nuts.

Beat the eggs in a separate bowl then add to the dry ingredients and mix well to combine.

Turn the batter into a shallow baking pan that's been greased and floured.

Place in an oven preheated to 350F (180C) and bake for about 30 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Allow to cool in the pan, then turn out onto a chopping board and cut into squares whilst still warm.

Dust with icing sugar and store in an air-tight tin.

Notes

If you don't have cardamom, just use a bit more cinnamon and/or nutmeg to taste. This recipe comes from the great depression, when eggs came in short supply. I originally got this recipe here. I made a few modifications to make it healthier and more chocolaty! I think they call this "No Egg Wonder Cake" because after you make it, you will wonder how it disappeared so quickly. Plus, if you use cacao powder as suggested, you will wonder why you feel so good after eating a slice or ten.

Ingredients

1 3/4 cups sifted cake flour

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup cocoa (try cacao powder!)

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt (Himalayan of course)

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 tablespoon vinegar

1 cup cold water (purified water)

Procedure

Sift dry ingredients together into a mixing bowl.

Add remaining ingredients and beat until almost smooth.

Pour into a greased and floured 9-inch baking pan.

Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick comes out clean.

Frost cake or serve with whipped topping. As far as the salt lamp from Persia I can tell you that my test shows that it has improved the negative ions. It has taken a little over a week to see an improvement in the numbers. So it does improve it just takes a little longer for the effect to show up in the test. It does how ever have an advantage over the amber glowing ones in that it is easier to sleep with. I believe you are able to have a more peaceful sleep with the Iranian salt lamp. I have had clients that are not able to sleep with the brighter salt lamps so the blue/purple ones will be recommended to have in the bedrooms. You get both working for you, improved neg. ions and a better nights sleep. My daughter and grandson are delighted to have them as nite lights in their bedrooms, leaving them on all day for the air quality benefits they provide. It is rewarding to find a person who characterizes the genuine quality of the products offered in both service and generosity of spirit. In other parts of the world, Italians will enjoy an Easter pie, the Polish will break Easter bread (babka), and the Spanish will eat rosquillas.

Whatever you decide to feast on, make sure this celebration of resurrection doesn't involve eating dead animals! Leave the meat off the menu and try these fantastic recipes from around the world.

United States
Veggie Baked Ham

1 large vegetarian stewed ham (available from May Wah)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
5 slices fresh pineapple
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup pineapple juice
1/2 cup orange juice

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Splash some mineral water on your face. The mineral content in the water can reduce skin irritations and will help your skin absorb the moisture.

Avocado. These beauties work on the outside of your body as well as they do on the inside. Avocados work as an excellent moisturizer, help heal the skin, and can even reduce age spots.

Yogurt. Use yogurt (the full fat kind) on your skin to soothe a sunburn or mix with honey to create a great mask that works for all skin types.
Antioxidants

Foods that are high in antioxidants help reverse the damaging effects of oxygen on the cells in your body. Not only are antioxidants great for your overall health, they are also a wonderful way to slow the effects of aging.

All of these foods are great antioxidants to incorporate into your diet.

Kidney beans. These inexpensive beans provide plenty of protein, fiber, folate, magnesium, and iron. Try substituting kidney beans for meat in your next meal.

Blueberries. Full of vitamin C and potassium, these little berries are full of nutrition and are one of the foods most packed with antioxidants.

Artichokes. Get magnesium, folic acid, fiber, and vitamins A and C with artichokes, which can help prevent a host of medical problems.

Plums. Available almost year round, plums have plenty of vitamins A, B, C, fiber, and potassium.

Strawberries. For a fruit that can protect your heart, guard against cancer, provide anti-inflammatory properties, and help prevent age-related macular degeneration, strawberries are the way to go.

Honey. Chock full of antioxidants, this sweet treat also has antibacterial properties and also works well for sore throats and coughs.

Apples. Long associated with healthy nutrition, an apple a day can provide heart and brain health benefits.

Blackberries. These plump berries are full of vitamins B, C, and K as well as fiber and manganese.

Pecans. Full of vitamin E and great for lowering cholesterol, these nuts are great on their own or baked in cookies, brownies, or a pie.

Cherries. Rich red cherries are not only delicious, but are high in fiber and vitamins C and A. They are reported to help with arthritis, heart health, and sleep problems.

Super Foods

Some foods are so incredibly packed with important nutrients that they have become known as super foods. Eating these foods will surely help you feel much healthier.

Acai. Known as one of the most nutritious berries in the world, use acai juice in a smoothie, mixed with other juices, or drink it on its own.

Goji berries. One of these little Himalayan berries has more vitamin C than an orange and more beta carotene than carrots.

Cacao nibs. The heart of the cocoa bean, this little bit of raw chocolate is full of antioxidants as well as flavonoids that help your heart and have been reported to significantly elevate your mood.

Chili peppers. Packed with vitamin C, these hot little numbers also contain antioxidants and help burn fat.

Pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are loaded with phytosterols, which help lower cholesterol, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs and minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and iron. They are also good for strong hair and nails.

Cinnamon. Containing polyphenols, the same agent in green tea, cinnamon has been shown to reduce blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.

Shallots. Replace garlic and onion with shallots (or use along with them) to help promote the good bacteria in your digestive tract and help eliminate toxins from your liver.

courtesy of National Massage Association

A Review of our New Cacao Products

Like many of you, I received last month's newsletter, which first announced Cacao truffles. A couple weeks ago, I had a dream about them. When I called Isabella to place my most recent order, she cheerfully told me that she has sold them at her local storefront already, and that they would shortly go online. Now that they have, I felt compelled to submit a review.

For those who don't know, Cacao, meaning "Bitter Water" in the Mayan language, refers to the unrefined product which becomes cocoa or chocolate. Have you ever heard that eating chocolate makes you feel in love, then scoffed when nothing happened save for a momentary sugar rush? This actually refers to Cacao, the raw form of chocolate, which preserves its chemical profile. Cacao contains iron and magnesium, two very important minerals lacking in many diets. It contains sulfur, which helps the body detoxify from heavy metals. It contains tryptophan to boost serotonin. Cacao does not contain caffeine. Instead, Cacao's stimulation comes from phenylethylamine and heobromine, a gentler analog of caffeine. Theobromine, meaning Drink of the Gods, has twice the half-life of caffeine, and dehydrates the body less. Many headaches today come from dehydration caused by excessive caffeine use.

With all of this knowledge in mind, I enthusiastically ordered one of each kind of truffle - Mayan, Goji, and Dark Cacao. I also ordered the Maca Manna spread, and Isabella also sent me a Chocolate Chai which she may make available as well. She told me to eat a truffle or two, or to try a teaspoon of the Maca Manna or Chai. As soon as I got the package, I ate a truffle, had a teaspoon of the Maca Manna, a teaspoon of the Chai, and two more truffles throughout the day. I felt quite good by the end. I love Cacao!

I will now review each product in order. Each truffle uses agave nectar and date sugar as sweeteners, and contains no dairy. Cacao Nibbs refer to pieces of the whole cacao bean. Cacao Powder refers to the powderized nibbs. Nibbs and powder contain the whole cacao bean. Cacao butter refers to the removed fats of the cacao bean.

First, I tried a goji-Cherry truffle. Goji berries have a whole fascinating nutritional profile themselves, and the Tibetans use them to enhance longevity. Combining them with Cacao make an ultimate superfood snack! Ingredients: Organic Cacao Powder, Organic Agave, Organic Cacao Butter, Dried Bing Cherries, Organic Cacao Nibs, Organic Goji Berries, Organic Vanilla Beans, Organic Date Sugar, and Celtic Sea Salt. Sounds good! I popped it in my mouth, given I hadn't eaten anything yet. Usually, you should not do this. Instead, you should take little bites, and saver them in your mouth, letting them dissolve, releasing their layers of flavor. The truffle had a sweet fruity taste which I really enjoyed, and the goji berries and cherries gave it a wholesome quality. It made a great first truffle!

A little while later, I wanted to try a Mayan truffle. This flavor really excited me, since I think in Mayan time, and have long known about the Mayans' and Aztecs' use of cacao, combining it with spices to synergize with Cacao's endorphine-releasing properties. In fact, you can make a pretty authentic drink by combining a tablespoon of cacao powder with a few shakes of our Gourmet Southwestern Seasoning. Add water or a milk substitute and heat to above body temperature. I expected something similar and the truffle did not disappoint. Ingredients: Organic Cacao Powder, Organic Agave, Organic Cacao Butter, Organic Cayenne, Organic Cinnamon, Organic Date Sugar, Organic Vanilla Beans, and Celtic Sea Salt. I took a small bite, anticipating the spicy flavor, and felt glad I did. This delivers the authentic experience in a portable form. Spicy foods also release endorphines, explaining why some people love spicy foods. The combination delivers a wonderful experience which you will not soon forget. The Cayenne adds a cleansing property as well. Brilliant!

Later in the day, I decided to try a Dark Cacao Truffle, so I could try one of each in the same day. Again, I had an expectation and it met it. This has a dark and thick flavor, with a texture to match. I would consider this the most accessible truffle. Ingredients: Organic Cacao Powder, Organic Agave, Organic Cacao Butter, Ground Organic Cacao Nibs, Organic Vanilla Beans, Organic Date Sugar, and Celtic Sea Salt. Pure and wonderful, this delivers the full satisfying experience, without any frills, and twice the enjoyment of any chocolate you will buy in any regular supermarket. You will love this one. The Celtic Sea Salt makes the perfect glaze. I might have to go and have one now. I already had a Mayan one earlier.

I will now describe the other two Cacao products. Maca Manna combines the stimulating effects of Cacao and Maca. Maca has a very male energy. Combined, the two make me feel like He-Man! "I Have the Power!!!!!!!!" It tastes incredible - chocolate, with a hint of cinnamon, and a thick and decadent texture. Ingredients: Organic Agave, Organic Cacao Powder, Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, Organic Cacao Butter, Organic Maca, Organic Cinnamon, Organic Cacao Nibs, Organic Vanilla Bean, and Celtic Sea Salt. Keep a jar of this at hand at all times. Maca has adaptogenic qualities, similarly to ginseng. I also got to try the Chai, which she doesn't currently carry so I won't dwell too much on it. If you picture good spicy Chai with a nice touch of Cacao powder then you will get the picture. I will amend this review if it becomes a regular product, and I hope it does. It puts me in a very intellectual mood, and makes me want to play chess or do something similar.

At the end of my conversation with Isabella, she said: "You have Cacao, you need some tea as well." I figured that sounded good, so I ordered some Green Tea with Lemongrass. The loose tea comes in a thing sort of like a teabag, but with paper "wings" which fold over the sides of the cup. This lets the tealeaves unfurl. Before I switched to Cacao after seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I drank tea exclusively. I love and appreciate good tea and can judge it well enough. I really enjoyed this tea, and consider it of top quality. The green tea has a delicate but earthy taste, with just a touch of caffeine. The lemongrass combines well with green tea.. I have had this combination before, and once again it worked. If you enjoy tea, then you will want to try a tin or two of these teas.

We have some great new products, and I hope you enjoyed reading my reviews as much as I enjoyed trying the products interviewed. Definitely give them a try!

- Austin Seraphin
http://behindthecurtain.us

Go Green: Greening Your Home Basic Tips

We are now living in an era where pollutants are affecting every part of our lives. Our homes are longer a safe sanctuary from toxins in the air, household items, furnishings, and renovation products. Homes that are plagued by toxins and chemicals can significantly increase the risk of health conditions such as cancer, asthma, heart disease, skin conditions, allergies, respiratory illnesses, and reproductive disorders. Chemicals may also end up in the environment where they pollute groundwater, contaminate the soil, and harm plant and animal life.

Millions of consumers are now searching for earth friendly natural products that will improve the health of their homes. When choosing an earth friendly and natural product, it is important to read the ingredient label. Any product that contains a chemical additive means that is has been chemically treated during processing Chemical additives can include: Sulfates (Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate), Parabens (Methyl-, Propyl-, Ethyl-, Butyl-), and Petrochemicals (petrolatum, mineral oil, paraffin). Formaldehyde is another dangerous chemical added to many products. Eco-friendly ingredients include grain alcohol, coconut or other natural plant oils, and plant-oil sanitizers such as eucalyptus, rosemary, or sage.

There are many products that can significantly reduce the number of toxins and chemicals in your home while making your home healthy and efficient with green remodeling tips and clean air:

1.) “Eco-Friendly” Paints are manufactured to contain fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are chemicals found in regular paint that are released in the air. “Eco Friendly” paints are usually made from recycled paint or vegetable dyes and minerals. Some recommended sources are listed below.

2.) “Eco- Friendly” Flooring includes bamboo, cork and linoleum. These types of flooring are inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and highly sustainable. Linoleum is 100% natural and 100% biodegradable.

3.) Green Furniture means buying furniture that is sustainable and environmentally friendly. Green furniture will not contribute to pollution and helps decrease deforestation.

When choosing green furniture, always look for pieces that have been constructed with certified sustainable wood. This is wood that comes from a sustainable resource instead of the rainforest. Furniture made from reclaimed wood is another option. Reclaimed wood comes from excess wood left from industry and structures. Bamboo is another great green choice. It grows quickly and is very versatile. It can be used for bedroom furniture, flooring, tables, chairs, patio furniture… and much more. Vintage furniture, or second-hand furniture, is another green alternative

4.) Natural Air Purifiers clean the air in your home without the use of chemicals or manufactured items. Beeswax candles are known to clean the air naturally emitting healthy ions and do not contain any chemical additives. Household plants are a great choice because they absorb polluted air. Placing Solay Salt Crystal Lamps throughout your home will ionize the air and keep it clean plus Solay salt lamps last indefinitely, reducing their impact and use an energy efficient 15 watt bulb.

5.) Organic and Earth Friendly Furnishings such as pillows and shower curtains. Earth friendly and healthy ingredients in such products include organic and natural unbleached cotton, organic wool, shredded rubber latex pillows, and organic hemp. Try to avoid foam products, plastics and synthetic materials as much as possible as those not only have been treated with chemicals that pollute our air and water, but they off gas, so you, your family and pets keep breathing that in and reducing your air quality.

Because so many consumers are looking for natural products to improve the quality of their homes, many companies look for ways to claim they are natural when they are actually not. The key to understanding if the product you have purchased is truly natural is to make sure that you have done your research, read the labels and ingredients and talk with the manufacturers or representatives of the product, so they can further explain the process and why it is an earth friendly and sustainable product.

Going green these days is easy. You no longer have to settle for products or services that are not modern or hip. Many designers in the fashion world, furniture, and home décor are using green and sustainable materials and creating beautiful products.

More green tips for green living are coming soon.

For any help on going green, please contact Isabella, Founder Solay Wellness Inc. at 847-676-5571.

Natural Shower Curtains Healthier Solution for Indoor Air Quality

In their recently published study, ‘Volatile Vinyl: The New Shower Curtain’s Chemical Smell’, The Center for Health, Environment & Justice reports that PVC-containing shower curtains can emit more than 100 chemicals in the air. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) shower curtains contain VOCs (volatile organic compounds), phthalates, lead, and organotins. These chemicals can damage the respiratory system, liver, kidney, central nervous system, and have been connected to diseases such as cancer. For women, phthalates have been linked to reproductive problems that include a shortened pregnancy and premature breast development. For men, the chemicals can damage sperm and other male reproductive functions. The study also revealed that heat and moisture cause the chemicals to be released in the air where they can be inhaled. Another study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency showed that plastic shower curtains can emit toxic compounds into the air.

The best remedy for removing such a toxic threat from your home is to replace your curtain PVC shower curtain with a natural eco-friendly shower curtain.

Hemp Shower Curtains

Shower curtains made from hemp are a popular and healthy choice for any home. It is durable and contains natural antifungal and antibacterial properties. Hemp grows and flourishes without the use of chemicals or pesticides. It can also grow in almost any type of climate and soil. The hemp fiber is processed without chemicals or pesticides. Organic Raw Chocolate is a healthy superfood that is chock-full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Raw chocolate means that the cacao has not been heated or processed allowing it to preserve all of its rich nutrients. Organic chocolate means that there have been no chemicals, fillers, and preservatives used in the production of the chocolate.

Processed chocolate that includes dairy, sugar, and chemicals, results in blocking the antioxidant and health benefits. Processed chocolate also contains fat, wax, fillers, and preservatives. When pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones from the processed chocolate ingredients are added to its production, processed chocolate becomes a food with no health benefits.

Over 300 Healthy Properties

More than 300 minerals and properties have been identified in raw organic chocolate. Cacao contains copper, manganese, zinc, sulphur, and is rich in B -vitamins that includes niacin. Because there is no sugar, raw organic chocolate is a great treat for children.

“Cornell University discovered that Cocoa has twice the antioxidants of red wine, and up to three times those found in green tea.”

Health benefits of raw organic chocolate include:

Lower blood pressure
Increases energy, alertness, creativity, and improves mood.
Containing very little caffeine, raw organic chocolate is a major source of magnesium which helps your heart.
Rich in Flavonoids which has a cancer-fighting antioxidant result
Promotes healthy blood flow thereby reducing the risk of strokes, blood clots, and heart attacks
Rich in Antioxidants thereby decreasing damaging free radicals
Increased Longevity: Researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health found that those who eat chocolate up to three times each month live almost a year longer than those who overindulge or eat junk food.
Cocoa is reported to help brain function. The magnesium is essential for maintaining brain function. Raw chocolate is also composed of brain functioning elements such as tryptophan and anandamide
Recently, the Theobromine in cocoa has been noted as calming the coughing reflex thereby helping to stop coughing.
Can reduce cholesterol by 5-10 percent
Decreases menopause and PMS symptoms
Helps control appetite and supports weight loss

Eating chocolate is a pleasure that almost everyone loves. The availability of raw organic chocolate and fair trade chocolate is steadily increasing. Due to popular demand, supermarket chains, specialty stores, health food stores, and online health companies are now providing raw organic chocolate. Consumers now have the ability to enjoy the health benefits of this delicious treat. View our line of organic raw chocolate truffles and spreads

Transformational Breath in the Solay Salt Room

Join us the 4th Friday in January, February and March in our Solay salt room and experience transformational breath work with Allen Baker.

Location: 8051 N Ridgeway Ave, Skokie, IL 60076. The body receives more oxygen, nourishing all of it’s cells. This brings more energy into the body and increases the body’s natural ability to detoxify. (It is estimated that approximately 70% of the body’s detoxification process is through the breath. Most people use only 25% to 50% of their full respiratory capacity. When you consider that the amount of oxygen in the air is less than it was hundreds of years ago, all this indicates that we are really getting the short shrift of what was meant for our health and well-being.)

Transformational Breath allows for subconsciously held negative patterns of past trauma or held emotions to resolve. Held emotions create a stagnation of energy, potentially causing dis-ease. Energy that is stagnated is not available for our present health and well-being.

By using specific breathing techniques, we can create a circuit that allows this previously stagnated energy to flow, integrate, and be available for our present lives. Transformational Breath also uses sound, movement, and safe physical touch to free up the tension and move stagnated energy that restricts our breathing capacity.

Visit us to learn more or visit www.breathingjoy.com for personal sessions.

Starting the New Year Ionized and Healthy

Your body is composed entirely of minerals and water. As an incredibly powerful solvent in your body, the hydrogen molecules in pure water provide nutrients in the form of energy to your cells and remove discarded, used energy. Without regular replacement of the water in your body, the cells will die, and so too, in time, will the body. Likewise, without replacing essential trace minerals systematically in the correct, water soluble, ionic form, the cells will malfunction, become weak and fatally diseased.

In order for your body to benefit from the minerals you take in, they must be extremely small. Their size is measured in angstroms. As a reference point, a sheet of paper is 1,000,000 angstroms thick. So you can understand that the minerals your body is looking for must be introduced in a way that your body can use. Even though larger than angstrom size minerals an be eventually absorbed by the blood, the angstrom sized minerals can be absorbed by individual cells. And that’s where they do the most good.

Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium are the five essential or major minerals for your body. Other important trace elements consist of chromium, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, and zinc. Additionally, selenium plays a key role in the maintenance of good health. Other trace elements like sulphur, nickel, cobalt, fluorine, oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen also have a part to play in your wellbeing. The human body depends upon 84 of the known 106 elements to maintain optimum health, many more than are now recognized.

All diseases of humanity can be attributed to the lack of minerals in our bodies.” Linus Pauling, PhD winner of 2 Nobel prizes said, “You can trace every sickness, every disease, and every ailment, to a mineral deficiency.” Experts tell us that minerals are rarely found in the natural foods grown on the table of the Earth today because our soils are depleted of minerals.

The slow degeneration of society, of humanity, is directly related to the lack of these minerals in our food. Regeneration is what we all want and need. We have all been created to realize our full physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual potentials as human beings. It’s almost beyond belief that the road to regeneration lies in something as simple as SALT! Could it be the reason why crystal salt has been so sought and valued by past civilizations, the reason that men have sacrificed their lives to gain its possession? What secret did they possess that we have either forgotten or have had hidden away from us? The ancient Egyptians were aware of the power of salt. They utilized six different salts, coming from both local and remote sources, for a variety of applications, both sacred and secular.

Original Himalayan Crystal Salt® contains all 84 minerals, the five essential minerals and all trace minerals, that are ionized in water and can be readily absorbed by the cells in your body.

Benefits of Original Himalayan Crystal Salt®, in the form of liquid ionized minerals. . .

• Makes your drinking water alkaline.
Energy can only flow in an alkaline
environment

• Are natural antioxidants

• Balances your blood pH

• Normalizes all metabolic functions

• Can be readily absorbed by your
cells where they are intended to be

• Are a complete and inexpensive source
of essential trace minerals

• Increases the flow of Energy in the body

Also add anti oxidants and health properties of wheatgrass and ocean gulf stream water to your daily routine.

Have a healthy and happy New Year!

best wishes,

Isabella
Founder Solay Wellness Inc.

Happy 2009!

We at Solay Wellness want to wish you a healthy and happy 2009! As I was sharing the benefits of the salt she asked me if she could "dowse" the bag of it that I use for putting in your salt shaker.

Not knowing what she meant by dowsing (new to me) she took out a charm on a chain and held it over the bag of salt. Nothing happen so she asked if I had anything else that might work. I told her of the detox face mask. She asked if she could dowse it. Having one of the samples I took the cover off, she dowsed it and it begin to swing like a pendulum clockwise (as opposed to counterclockwise).

Now........I do not advocate that sort of thing, however, I gave her the sample to take home and try on her granddaughter. She came back with her granddaughter last Wednesday and the ringworm is gone!! Praise the Lord!"

Now, as for me, I have had this pea size hard cyst between my ribcage for about a year now. It was small and didn't bother me so I didn't do anything about it. However, after my son used the detox face mask on his cyst I decided to give it a go. Nothing like using your own son as a ginea pig!! Anyway, I put it on the cyst and within a day or two it appeared to have burst open as it grew to 3 times it's original size!! Oh evay' !! I keep putting the mud mask on it for days and within a week it began to drain......and drain.....and drain. It became very soft but was still somewhat painful so I keep putting pressure on it when I washed it. I finally just started wiping it with one of my dampened rocks and today I can finally state that it is no longer sore and the swelling has gone down.

Now, the greatest thing is that in the past I have had 3 such cysts on my back that had to be surgically removed, one of which grew back and I had a second surgery. So, I just wanted to testify to the healing power of your wonderful detox face mask!!!

You are surely on the right track with your products and I just wanted to send you words of encouragement to keep on doing what you are doing for the health of anyone who needs it! Practitioners of all faiths have used salt to
cleanse and prepare a space. If you have a spiritual practice, you can
use salt to strengthen it.

Salt crystals act like any kind of crystal. They hold intention, and
broadcast their programming continuously. Salt correlates with the
element of earth, which makes it good for anything involving grounding
and neutralizing negativity. Salt has a neutral vibration, and good salt
- such as Himalayan salt - has a very heart-based vibration as well.
Salt embodies all these concepts: earth, neutrality, and protection.

On a personal level, you can ingest salt, or use it for bathing. Both
ways incorporate salt into your system. Ingesting the salt in your food
keeps the levels constant. Using solay introduces a concentrated burst
of light. Bathing with salt has a very purifying effect both physically
and metaphysically. On a physical level, it helps the body detoxify. On
a metaphysical level, it helps get rid of negative energy. Before you
can cleanse your outer space, you must cleanse your inner space, and
salt lets you do both very easily.

When salt and water combine they form a new essence, as with bathing or
making solay. You can use this to bless water as well. Simply sprinkle a
little salt or a few solay drops into some purified water. Do this with
intent, using any magical items you have to aide you. Intention rules.
You can use this blessed water to sprinkle around a space, to purify
yourself, or in any other creative way where you would use blessed
water.

To purify a space, you can use salt to make a salt circle. Stand facing
east, and cast it in the four directions going clockwise. You can also
sprinkle around some blessed water, as detailed above. This makes a very
potent way to protect a space, and to dedicate it for meditation and
energy work. Solay rocks can work well to help anchor energy as well,
for example by placing a rock in each of the four corners of a room.

Salt lamps generate negative ions, which have positive results. They
make wonderful additions to a space to generate healthy energy, and to
keep negative forces away. Many people describe them as looking magical
for a reason.

I hope you found some useful information in this article. Remember that
we now reside in the darkest time of the year, between Halloween and
Christmas. Take care, keep on guard, and always keep some salt handy!
Stay strong through this time. Good always prevails.

- Austin Seraphin
