that's the trekking sock i started on the way to washington last year. i was slowly working on the second sock and the ballet pullover while walking around the exhibit halls. more pictures later, when i'm not called into work an hour early.

quick posting before work.

this is a well-written piece. definitely needed to be said. i tend to go back and forth in my spinning between yarns that are fun to make and yarns i'd actually knit up.

haven't been blogging because i haven't been doing much. i did finish my sockapaloooza socks and finally sent them to kathy. thank goodness she likes them! i got my socks a while ago (while i was knitting my sock pal's socks!) from a blogless rebecca. all photos here.

have slowly but surely been spinning some handpaintedyarn.com merino roving that was gifted to me. i think i'll aim for a soft fingering weight. the last time i had their merino roving, i spun up a 2-ply worsted weight.

chauntel mentioned a knitting slump recently. i'm sort of the same, but it's more like a lack of inspiration. i haven't seen or found anything i've really, really wanted to make. i do have a mimi verylong on the needles, using some pretty cotton that was an impulse buy from village spinning and weaving. i love how it's looking. it'll be good bank knitting. i finished one thuja sock for a friend. there's no deadline for that, thankfully. that's really it.

now back to being busybusybusybusybusybusybusybusybusy. tomorrow's my day off, but i'm going to spend it driving to san diego. driving up the next day to go to work. the fun never stops here, nopenopenope.

one to go. finished on thursday morning in las vegas while waiting for the others to wake up. had to finish with a pointy toe since i didn't have kitchener stitch instructions with me. it makes for a snug toe, so i might go back and undo a few rows and kitchener the toe. that'll shorten the sock but it's at just the right length right now.

whew. it's been an eventful month. month and a half, really. a week after my last post, my paternal grandmother died and i didn't feel like doing anything. she helped raise my sisters and me and is one of the biggest crafty influences in my life. there aren't enough words in all the languages i've known to describe how i've felt.

two weeks after that, i moved into a new apartment. when all three of us are working at the same time, moving is a slow and painful process. it also brought to my attention just how much yarn i have. like most, it's more than i thought. we finally moved everything and finished cleaning on saturday. granted, i wasn't there saturday because i was at work.

i'm still working on my sockapalOOOza socks. even started a flickr set for them. i'm at the toe of the first sock and loving how it looks.

leaving for las vegas tomorrow, i'll be back sometime saturday. it's a road trip with the girls; maybe i'll get some knitting done. :) maybe.

this is a sleeve for wendyknits teal hogget. it was the sweater project i had in mind for the peace fleece i got from leigh at woolflowers. and then i saw ivete's vee in chiagu. now i'm torn. i really like the way vee looks. much more than teal hogget. i don't have paypal. but hmmm. also, i really really like this argyle vest. argh. choices.

haha! two posts in one month!

saturday, my roommate and i went to watch brokeback mountain. so i decided to knit on the trekking sock. today, i was knitting on the same sock at the optometrist's and realized that sometime during the movie i had added a stich. i should have taken a picture of the sock before i ripped it back; it was a really nice increase. didn't even notice it until an inch and a half later.

i'm thinking of knitting, of all things, another hat. just as soon as i find the bell cloche hat pattern from last year's knitting pattern-a-day calendar. depending on the gauge, i might use my one skein of birthday yarn (mountain colors weaver's wool quarters in wildflower). or some handpainted yarn/malabrigo. what i really want to knit is some lace or a sweater. i'd like to knit something from the yarn i have... feh. my secret santa got me two knitpicks samplers, the shadow (lace weight) and dancing? (fingering/sock weight). i had to look it up on the website and i just noticed that they raised the minimum for free shipping to $40. drat.

[note to self: sockapalOOOza/sockapal3za/whatever sign-ups start at 9PM pacific time. i should look it up and see if i want to participate.]

[edit: decided to join sockapalOOOza, over at blue blog alison's. mainly because i like knitting for other people. if it's for me, i get sidetracked by other things.]

lately, i haven't been doing too many crafty things. the new job is stats and analysis half the time and meetings to revise documents the other half the time. always something new to learn. at least i've been going to knitting; that's good for me.

apparently thuy still reads this blog. and she says that it doesn't mattter that the internet in my apartment is slow so there are no pretty posts with pictures. so long as i blog. here goes...

i'm in the process of trying my darnedest to stay up here in santa barbara, preferably working at the university. i'll find out about that next week.

i finished one hooray for me glove (pattern by marnie maclean). realized that it was too big for my hand when chris put it on and fit him just fine. there is now a request for black "gaming gloves" with a triforce on the back of each one.

finished one amelia earhart aviator cap in handpaintedyarn.com merino. knit up, but not done sewing up another one out of baby alpaca. can't find my yarn needles, so i'm doing this by crochet hook. [edit: done seaming at 1 pm]

i miss spinning on my wheel, but space is shrinking in our apartment. busy with the knitting anyway.

friends back in san diego are doing the usual secret santa thing this year. the evite that was sent out was harry potter themed. if i have time, and can find the yarns, i'm thinking of making some little bookmark sized scarves, three from each house and toss them in a bag for "sorting." they want to have the exchange after christmas, so i'll have time to look for colors. won't need more of a ball of each color. already have griffindor and... um... oh, what was it... slytherin! (sadly, i had to look at my office stash to see which colors i had.)

so yeah. i'm still in santa barbara. i'm still working for UCSB. the only things that have changed?

fall quarter has started. i helped screen and hire 10-12 students. i'm scheduling most of the TA taping shoots. (we're expecting about 150 this quarter.) i'm fielding phone calls from professors that would rather have us do everything for them. i'm coordinating new and old student employee schedules to make sure everyone gets enough hours and is properly trained on at least one of our three kinds of cameras.

this is my new car. can i park it anywhere in isla vista? nope. it's three weeks old and in my name. right now it's at summers's house. which of course, i can't get to easily. oh well.

this is my new wheel. (do you guys have to turn your heads? i'm not sure if the picture is right side up.) ashford traditional. free. from the woman i work with. she also gave me a schacht rigid heddle loom.

i've slowly been knitting things for friends. very slowly. my mind is so tired when i get home, i can't even think about making dinner. maybe i need to start a new mindless knitting project. after i turn the heel of that second sock...

for now, anyway. today was supposed to be my last day at work but yesterday i found out that the head of our department wants me around during the installation of the executive director and through fall quarter. so he's paying for me to stay til december 23 if i want.

posting from work

i haven't been busy-busy; i just don't feel like i have a lot to say. i have two projects right now: a pair of elegant gauntlets in regia (clown colorway) for someone i've never met and a silk corset in black karabella(?) frost for me. i usually knit on the gauntlets while at work. (webpage is outdated, by the way.) i'll knit on the corset during knitting group or when i can find adequate lighting. that, and i'm sad that the dye from the yarn is rubbing onto the needles.

work is interesting, as far as situations go, but the day-to-day things aren't as fun. i was originally supposed to work full time from graduation (march) to the end of the fiscal year (june). then my boss asked if he got funding, would i be willing to stay on to train the staff person who is taking over for me, since he'd be vacationing in ireland. he didn't tell me whether or not he got funding, but he did. while he was on vacation, my employment got extended 2 weeks since we spent the first 2 weeks cleaning and organizing the office. my end date was supposed to be aug 12. last week, i got another extension. my new, and probably final, end date is aug 30. it feels a bit like being strung along, but i do like this place, its atmosphere and the people. and the people seem to like me. not sure what i'm doing afterwards.

i'm alive!

really, i am. just been working and sort of knitting. and spinning! oh my poor wheel, the wooden knob-thingy that adjusts the bobbin brake broke! i can still sort of spin on it, but i wonder if they make replacement knobs or if i have to take it straight to gord lendrum himself...

(i would put in links if i had the time to look them all up. just about everything i'm referring to is online and google-able.)

knitting:
ran out of yarn for my alpaca cowl. made three coifs, only one is shocking pink. started the branching out scarf in hot pink cotton from blue sky alpacas. it started as a swatch to try the lace out, but i really like the way it's turning out, so i'll probably buy another hank to finish it. if i'm not tired of the pattern by then, i'll make another one out of rowanspun dk in green. started a minisweater for my sister so she can wear her tank tops to school without violating the dress code. now that i think about it, maybe i should make one for me so i can wear my tanks to the office. or just knit myself a cardigan. mostly little things at the moment, so i can take them to work. thinking of shrugs and things too. or the hot lava cardigan.

spinning:
too tired to try and spin fingering/laceweight most days, so i dug up the datepalm? roving from handpaintedyarn.com that i bought myself for my birthday and wheel-spun that up while watching cheesy movies with nicole and summers. keeping nicole entertained while she recovered from wisdom teeth removal. plied it on the spindle and wheel. i think i got a sport/light worsted yarn out of the 3.5 oz i got. don't know what to do with that either.

that's the most of it. met corrinne may at the kava lounge on april 25, brought the knitting and the spinning. told her i discovered her through a knitblog. now she's sorta thinking of taking up knitting. hehe. went to disneyland and california adventure with my best friends on april 15 (pictures: http://www.huzzuh.net/jayme/photos/disneyland ) knit on the way up. should have brought knitting for standing in line (2 hours for splash mountain!). tower of terror is one of the best rides ever! (didn't have time for california screamin'.)

so yeah. lots of work. trying to fit in some time at the gym. still knitting. always knitting.

quick update

yes, i'm done. i now have a B.S. in Zoology. whee! and i've just finished my first week of full-time work. (8-12, 1-5 m-f) they changed my job title and with that comes a $2/hr raise. it's like office manager or something. not much time to knit at work anymore, but i bring it anyway. went to knitting on monday and saw marin, erin o., and someone new whose name i can't recall. on thursday there was some sort of performance, so i didn't really stay. will the sb knitters come out next monday?

oh! i'm 'hosting' a partylite party on sunday, april 10 at 2 pm. i'll post the location once it's set with melissa. if you're in the area, please come and join us!
