Computers as the "Ideal Analyst"

Expert Reactions: Dave Mattox, Senior Associate
I see computers becoming "analysts" in the areas where the data is overwhelming in terms of both volume and heterogeneity. This is the area where a human cannot possibly hope to manage. Work is already being done in the scientific community that reverses the traditional process. Rather than develop a theory and then analyze the data to see if it fits, the data is used to generate possible theories.

Q&A: Justin Neroda on Mission & Performance

Justin Neroda is Senior Associate with expertise in Mission and Performance Analytic solutions . He uses his deep technical knowledge of a wide range of modeling and simulation tools, as well as our Weapons System Life Cycle Management Process , to develop solutions for our clients across the DoD . What's happening at the intersection of cloud computing and mission, performance, and policy analytics? What kind of complex decisions are you helping your clients to inform? Over the last several years the cost of collecting data has been decreasing significantly, and our clients have been leveraging enterprise IT approaches to capture more detailed information about their organizations. From your perspective, how can "big data" and data driven discovery help organizations better understand the impact of decisions and future actions? By combining big data, cloud computing technology, and analysis tools, we obtain additional fidelity into current operations and these insights will allow my clients to make more informed decisions. While cloud technology is nothing new, how is its practical application today driving operational efficiencies, improving data analysis and fueling new innovation? Cloud technology has been in development for several years, but only recently organizations have increased their adoption rate of cloud computing approaches. This was made possible by refinements to the types of cloud architectures along with establishing security mechanisms that provide improved information assurance for cloud users.

What is Big Data?

Expert Reactions: Josh Sullivan, Senior Associate
Jeff is beginning to talk about the science of big data and the value to organizations of connecting information across the stove-pipes information systems. Think of big data as the words of a story - by themselves they have limited meaning. When you add grammar and structure, you begin to link together these words and can develop many different meaning and insights from the collection of words. The science of big data is similar----data stored in information systems are the words and the emerging data analytics is the grammar which allows analysts and decision makers to derive meaning from data.

How We Consume Data

Expert Reactions: Mike Cameron, Principal
Adding on to Mike's point, users are less interested in the data than in answers to specific questions. So, unless you are a data scientist and find the data itself interesting, there is a step missing. We need a set of data mining services to determine what entities are represented in the data, and the relationships between those entities. I believe we need another layer of services on top of the data mining to move us from content to context.

Dave Mattox is a Senior Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton. He supports a variety of national security clients as a technical expert in database design (object-oriented and relational), knowledge management , and software engineering

The Federal News Radio Expert Voices panel focuses on "Advancing the Art of Analytics." In your opinion, why is this topic so relevant right now?

"The problem isn't having access to big data; the problem is understanding, correlating, and finding critical links in data that's sitting in front of you. Big data analytics is dedicated to reducing the ocean of data down to a puddle that an analyst can better focus on, so ultimately they understand the data better." ~ Dave Mattox, Senior Associate

Q&A: Josh Sullivan on Big Data IT Architecture

Josh Sullivan is a Senior Associate and technical leader at Booz Allen. His extensive knowledge of large-scale distributed systems and cloud computing technologies help our government and commercial clients address their toughest big data challenges . Why are your government clients looking for IT systems based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) technologies? SOA also allows them to leverage and transition to technologies like cloud computing. What does the future of data-driven discovery and advanced analysis look like in the next five to ten years? I foresee three things happening that will cause a shift in data-driven discovery in the next five to ten years: Data sharing, Data deluge, and Data predictions. How does "big data" analytics improve our nation's ability to make the cyber domain more secure? When you can process your data in aggregate using big data analytics and other advanced analytics, it is easier to piece together malicious data patterns, especially rare patterns that are beyond the norm. How do you design systems to ensure your clients can manage and analyze increasing data flows? Use simple scalable designs, use economies of scale, and assume that at some point the systems will fail.

Q&A: Mike Cameron on Big Data Analytics

Mike Cameron is a Principal with expert knowledge of big data technology and the economic implications of cloud computing . He is currently focused on how the cloud can create new, advanced capabilities in descriptive and predictive analytics . How is cloud computing changing the way we think about big data analytics from the user's perspective? Today we are able to look at and analyze terabytes of data or more by leveraging the cloud. The benefit is speed in the analysis of big data, thus allowing end users to make better decisions much faster. Private and public organizations used to deal with gigabytes, but now it's terabytes, petabytes or more, so what is the investment needed now and in the future to manage, mine and analyze "big data"? Investment is driven by multiple factors, such as real-time analysis, large data sets, and location. From an economic perspective, what kind of cost savings are "big data" organizations seeing as they migrate business processes to the cloud? For every dollar you spend in the cloud you would spend 6-to-25 dollars in a conventional data center to do the same amount of work. Which industry segments will reap the largest economic benefit from big data analytics in the cloud? In the private sector the industry segments that struggle with big data include banking and finance, energy, and healthcare, and their counterparts in the public sector tend to have the same problems. Within government, the defense and security communities also struggle with big data, but in some ways they are at the forefront of dealing with big data issues because our national security is top priority.
