Expert Reactions: Dave Mattox, Senior Associate I see computers becoming "analysts" in the areas where the data is overwhelming in terms of both volume and heterogeneity. This is the area where a human cannot possibly hope to manage. Work is already being done in the scientific community that reverses the traditional process. Rather than develop a theory and then analyze the data to see if it fits, the data is used to generate possible theories.

Think of big data as the words of a story - by themselves they have limited meaning. When you add grammar and structure, you begin to link together these words and can develop many different meaning and insights from the collection of words. The science of big data is similar----data stored in information systems are the words and the emerging data analytics is the grammar which allows analysts and decision makers to derive meaning from data.

Expert Reactions: Mike Cameron, Principal Adding on to Mike's point, users are less interested in the data than in answers to specific questions. So, unless you are a data scientist and find the data itself interesting, there is a step missing. We need a set of data mining services to determine what entities are represented in the data, and the relationships between those entities. I believe we need another layer of services on top of the data mining to move us from content to context.

He is currently focused on how the cloud can create new, advanced capabilities in descriptive and predictive analytics . How is cloud computing changing the way we think about big data analytics from the user's perspective? Today we are able to look at and analyze terabytes of data or more by leveraging the cloud. The benefit is speed in the analysis of big data, thus allowing end users to make better decisions much faster. Private and public organizations used to deal with gigabytes, but now it's terabytes, petabytes or more, so what is the investment needed now and in the future to manage, mine and analyze "big data"? Investment is driven by multiple factors, such as real-time analysis, large data sets, and location. From an economic perspective, what kind of cost savings are "big data" organizations seeing as they migrate business processes to the cloud? For every dollar you spend in the cloud you would spend 6-to-25 dollars in a conventional data center to do the same amount of work. Which industry segments will reap the largest economic benefit from big data analytics in the cloud? In the private sector the industry segments that struggle with big data include banking and finance, energy, and healthcare, and their counterparts in the public sector tend to have the same problems. Within government, the defense and security communities also struggle with big data, but in some ways they are at the forefront of dealing with big data issues because our national security is top priority.
