Explaining Explanar to a non golfer

Explanar is the same as a set of training wheels or stabilisers on a bike. that's all you need to know.

Like a bike's seat, you adjust it according to the size of the person.

The more the person gets used to the stabilisers, the better they get at cycling/golfing without the stabilisers

Palaceriggs, Cumbernauld, Scotland

Palaceriggs in Cumbernauld, Scotland have been investing heavily in the past 18 months in junior golf development. They have been working with North Lanarkshire Council to seek coaching advice and supporting equipment. Palaceriggs utilise the Explanar Junior System for the kids up to around 9 or 10 years of age and the Explanar Teaching System for the youth or teenagers.

Frank Anderson and his team are doing some great work with juniors.

Explanar Lesson Format 4

This is the 4th teaching format you can utilise to teach with Explanar this winter.

One of the most dynamic Golf Professionals, at the forefront of Golf Retail and Coaching is Chris Potter. Based at the Norfolk Premier Driving Range, Chris operates a superb retail Golf Shop and also has one of the busiest Golf Academy’s in the country. Chris Potter was the first colleague of mine to introduce Explanar to his Driving Range; not one to do things by halves, he purchased TWO Professional Explanars. He quickly realised how busy the Explanar would be within his lessons so he needed the second Explanar to hire out to his pupils.

So, instead of it being £5 for a bucket of balls, it now became £10 to hire the Power Roller. Importantly, Chris would only permit pupils to hire the Power Roller after they had taken at least four ½ hour lessons and knew how to use the Explanar safely and correctly. Also, it ensured that Chris’s pupils would go away and practise correctly what they were shown in the lesson. Surprisingly, hiring the Power Roller also led to incremental sales of Explanar Home System as pupils recognised the benefit of regular short sessions daily.

Advertise free “taster” sessions of only 10 minutes: the instant improvement will almost certainly generate new revenue. Imagine investing 1 hour to give six 10-minute sessions; Sam Jarman, Head of Instruction at Collingtree Park Golf Club is confident that three of those six golfers will then book a full lesson. He finds it very easy to invite golfers on the Driving Range to step into his Explanar and feel it’s benefits.

Sell Group Coaching Sessions over an 8 to 12 week term to include Explanar instruction; pupils can continue to use Explanar as you work down the line to teach each pupil. Include a 7-iron club within the price, this is a very effective way to start pupils off with club purchasing. You can explain that custom fitting is especially important at the entry stage; it’s not just for established golfers. Remind them how much care is taken to ensure that a child’s first pair of shoes fit perfectly. In the same way, the “lie” of the golf club has the biggest effect on a golfer’s progress in learning their golf swing.

Hire the Power Roller alongside a bucket of balls. This way the pupil can alternate between hitting shots and swinging within Explanar.

Only permit Power Roller Hire after a golfer has had at least four ½ hour lessons on Explanar. Make sure they know their individual settings and the absolute need to swing the PowerRoller smoothly and very slowly.

This is the 3rd lesson format for teaching with Explanar this winter.

How to teach with Explanar and your video camera equipment.

Introduce concept of Video+Explanar – See It! Feel It! Do It! (10 mins)
Film pupil “Face-On” and “Down the Line” (5 mins).
Show pupil “Down the Line” at address: draw in the “Optimum Biomechanical Swing Plane with graphic line (more).
Freeze frame pupil at the Top of the Backswing.
Explain why Butt/Shaft/ Head/Face are out of or across OBSP. (5 mins)
Set Explanar correctly and work within machine (5 to 10 mins)
Film again “Down the Line” to show how much closer their swing has become to the OBSP. (5 mins.)
Finish by hitting more shots mixed with bursts of Explanar. (10 mins.)
Clarify the need to adjust the Explanar to suit the individual pupil AND to alter the setting to suit the club in use e.g. Flatter for Driver-Upright for Wedge.
UPSELL OPPORTUNITY- Burn a DVD of the Lesson for the pupil to take home.

Explanar Lesson Format 2

This is the second lesson format for teaching with Explanar this winter.

Senior Golfers

The golfing population’s average age is increasing; at Woburn we have a group of forty to fifty Senior golfers who meet for a “swindle” twice a week. Explanar has radically improved my Senior pupils and many of them recognise the physical benefits of using it. Simply by supervising a Senior pupil on how best to use Explanar, they can get back significant distance they thought they had lost forever. I get a real buzz from using Explanar with these very keen golfers – it’s like soaking a rusty hinge in WD40 and seeing them move freely and effortlessly.

Groups of 6 works well – make sure you take the money up front! It is vital to the financial success of group coaching to sell the package as a series of 4. You could stretch these sessions to 8 for this type of coaching to make the price attractive to Seniors (or keep the extra for yourself because you’ll have to work quicker with 8!).
Use your Launch Monitor or simulator to demonstrate “Before and After”.
Anticipate increasing Club Head speed by at least 10% after the first session.
Mix freely by alternating from Explanar to real shot often – Explanar for 4 minutes then Driver/3 Wood for 10 minutes.

If you succeed in mixing good Shoulder Coil and “oily” wrists your Seniors should automatically keep their left arm in line in the Backswing. Never, tell a pupil to consciously “keep the Left arm straight” – it’s a disaster! If they try to do it, their wrists will seize up and the left arm will bend even more.

Explanar Lesson Format 1

This is the first Explanar lesson format from our Booklet on teaching with Explanar this winter.

Offer coaching on specific areas of need and overcome the fear that “you’ll ruin me if you change everything”.
Run series of “troubleshooting” clinics. Advertise group lessons for 6 people over 4 sessions – if you normally charge £60 per hour- charge £120 for the four 2 hour sessions. They get 8 hours @ a rate of £30 – you earn £720 for 8 hours and earn £90 per hour.

Winter can be a mixed blessing for P.G.A. Professionals. On one hand it’s good to have a rest after a busy season, on the other, the downturn in business can prevent one relaxing and enjoying the break.

I believe that the clouds of winter can have a “silver lining” by capitalising on all the strengths that Explanar has to offer. Like us Pro’s, the amateur golfer is disappointed by the enforced break in golfing activity due to wet and cold weather. As the inventor of the Explanar Golf Training & Fitness System , I am confident that you can make more income in the winter, by motivating your pupils and engaging them in constructive coaching and practice. You will earn more money from increased lesson activity; your pupils will become loyal customers when you radically improve their game.

So, you have a choice! Stay in the shop, drink coffee and wish your life away, or, take control, motivate your pupils and get yourself ready for the spring so you hit the ground running.

The most frequently asked question from golf teachers and academy directors is "What's the difference between the Explanar Home System and the Explanar Teaching System ?"

The Explanar Teaching System was built BY a PGA Professional, FOR PGA Professionals TO teach with.

When you teach with Explanar you physically get inside the machine with the student. You work their wrist hinge, you work their release on the follow through.

The Home System simply doesn't accomodate for two people. In addition, the Home System is not manufactured to withstand 8 hours of usage a day, 7 days a week.

Many of us teaching golf have been significantly influenced in understanding the golf swing from Ben Hogan's Fundamentals of Golf.

Yesterday Explanar interviewed Sam Jarman at Collingtree Park Club Course in Northamptonshire about who and how he teaches with the Explanar Professional Teaching System:

Which golfers benefit the most from your teaching with Explanar?

Sam Jarman
Undoubtedly beginners. Explanar gives them the confidence of the golf motion. In 3 minutes they can make around 50 motions. They can generally make around 30 to 40 great swings in that time frame. The alternative is to spend 2 hours with them to get that feeling. My take is that if I can make the golf swing fun and get them instant results they will get hooked on golf and come back to me for more lessons.
But Explanar is also great for anyone who wants to make change quickly in their swing.

Sam, how do you introduce Explanar lessons to your students ?

When someone arrives for a lesson I generally ask them "I'm going to put you inside Explanar, are you OK with that?" 99 times out of 100 people are at ease with that.

Sam, describe the types of golfers or lessons where you don't utilise Explanar?

Sam
When a student just needs a refresher or check up, I don't use Explanar. They just need me to review their ball striking or posture. Also I don't typically involve Explanar in short game lessons.

Sam, there's alot of amateur golfers out there with really bad grips.Luther Blacklock, Inventor of Explanar and PGA Master Professional, makes a big song and dance about the short left thumb and the grip behind fundamental to a sound golf swing. What are your experiences with golfers and their grips?

Sam
Alot of golf pro's don't like to change a golfers grip as the new correct feels completely alien. They get worse and revert back to the old grip. What I do with a grip correction is get the student swinging for about 4 minutes within Explanar to get familiar with the swing feeling of the change. Just let them feel the swing with the new grip without actually hitting any golf balls.
Then step out and hit some shots. That's when the student notices the different in shot making. It's generally at the point they make the commitment to the correct grip I've shown them.

Do you ever teach any low handicap golfers using Explanar ?

I have this student with a 4 handicap, who shall remain nameless. This chap has complete naturally ability but was all hands and arms BUT has the posture of a 28 handicap golfer. He was looking for ideas to get better. So we worked on his weight transfer and working his big shoulder muscles. Things are progressing nicely with him.

As part a recent Explanar Demo Day at North Gailes driving range in Irvine Ayrshire, Luther Blacklock took time to educate fellow PGA Professionals Bill Lockie, Alasdair Forrow of Whitecraigs Golf Club and Joe Ferguson of Dumfries Golf Club.

Bill Lockie, one of Scotland's most respected golf coaches, works alongside the Professional Golfers Association to teach PGA Professional how to teach as well as being a former Scottish National Coach. Bill won last years PGA Seniors Championship and narrowly missed out on defending his title.

Videoing a golf swing and ugly faces

If you use a video camera to film your swing or you use video as part of your teaching, consider this.

Video is simply a modern mirror and a mirror won't change an ugly face.

Here's what to do instead:

Film your swing or your student's golf swing
Draw a line from the ball to the butt of the club
Then go into Explanar or put your student into Explanar for 5 minutes.
Make sure Explanar is set up through their sternum and on their optimum swing plane.
Go back and hit shots with the video camera turned on.
Draw a line from the butt of the club to the ball again and look at those 2 lines you drew before and after Explanar.

You will now see a golf swing on plane with that line you drew running from the ball through the sternum to the butt of the club.

What is a Master PGA Professional ?

PGA Professionals such as David Leadbetter, Bob Torrance, Dennis Pugh, Pete Cowen have all been awarded Master PGA Professional status by the PGA of Great Britain for their contribution to golf.

Luther Blacklock, Inventor of Explanar, joined this prestigious group of 22 in 2007.

Luther Blacklock Coaching PGA Level 1 Coaches

Lesson 1 : Starting to swing on plane
The first of 3 video lessons will provide you with an understanding of the importance of swinging the golf club on your OPTIMUM swing plane and how using Explanar will help you hit the ball consistently straighter and longer, whilst improving your fitness at the same time!

Lesson 2 : Introducing the wrists
In this lesson, Luther, using the Explanar, builds up the golf swing with the introduction of wrist hinge. Wrist hinge helps generate club head speed and trajectory and improves accuracy. It is one of the most misunderstood elements of the swing amongst amateurs.

Lesson 3 : Shoulders and wrists
Luther explains how the body, arms and hands when working together on the right swing plane generates a more powerful and repeatable motion enabling you to hit the ball straighter, further and more consistently.
