The Hollywood Reporter says 3Ality acquired the Los Angeles-based company and quickly renamed itself 3Ality Technica. The two one-time competitors are expected with the merger to form a single powerhouse 3D production equipment company. Some of the recent projects 3Ality has worked on include The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , The Geat Gatsby , Jack and the Giant Killer and The Amazing Spiderman . In addition, the two companies, which are now a single entity have begun to make inroads in the 3D broadcast market with 3Ality's work with the U.K.-based company Sky3D and Element Technica's work at events such as the FIFA 2010 soccer World Cup and 2011 Wimbledon tennis championships. As part of the deal Element Technica's staff will move to 3Ality's Burbank, Calif. headquarters, and Element Technica's two partners, Hector Ortega and Stephen Pizzo will become senior vice presidents at 3Ality.<div><a href="http://www.explore3DTV.com/blog/entry/21978/3Ality-purchases-Element-Technica/">[Read more]</div>

Sony is giving the outdoor accessory a high-tech twist, adding 2D and 3D recording to the DEV-3 (seen at the very bottom) and the DEV-5 (pictured below). According to Sony, these are the world's first digital binoculars to record in the AVCHD 2.0 format. Both models use G Lens optics by Sony with Exmor R CMOS sensors and BIONZ processors to capture in full HD, with stereo sound to boot. There's also a 3D mode, to make your video capture just a teeny bit more lifelike -- and compatible with your 3D TV. Each one has options for electronic and manual autofocus. The DEV-3 can do magnification of 10x optical (5.4x in 3D mode), while the DEV-5's magnification range can go from 0.9x up to 20x digital. Other features include Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, top-mounted controls, and a USB port. The DEV-5 also throws in GPS, which allows you to tag images and video clips. Both models come with a rechargeable battery pack that promises up to three hours of 2D recording on a charge. The box also includes an A/V connecting cable and USB cable. Unlike the Patriots' Bill Belichick and the Jets' Rex Ryan who will likely never sit down and talk about their defensive philosophies over a few beers, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung are showing they can work together when it's necessary for the health of the industry. Recently the three consumer electronics giants announced their collaboration with the 3D technology company Xpand 3D to develop a new standard for active 3D glasses. The name of the joint effort is the "Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative" and together the four companies will develop and license radio frequency (RF) and active 3D glasses technologies. &ldquo;Panasonic has been working to standardize 3D glasses technologies, and in March, we announced a joint licensing of IR system protocols with XPAND, backed by several participant companies. We are very pleased that today&rsquo;s latest collaboration will incorporate our previous concept into these new standardization efforts,&rdquo; says Masayuki Kozuka, general manager of media &amp; content alliance office, corporate R&amp;D Division, Panasonic Corporation. &ldquo; We hope the expanded collaboration...<div><a href="http://www.explore3DTV.com/blog/entry/21791/CE-Giants-Partner-to-Develop-3D-Glasses/">[Read more]</div>
