It is a member of the PHINMA Education Network. The University of Iloilo started as the Iloilo City Colleges (ICC). It was established in June 1947 by the Hon. Fernando H. Lopez, then mayor of Iloilo City, who was imbued with the spirit of unselfish service to the youth. In this great task of organizing a college, he was inspired by his wife Doña Mariquit and his brother Don Eugenio. Today, the University of Iloilo stands stronger than ever. It continues to enlighten the minds and shape the ideas of thousands of young Filipinos, the most fitting and lasting monument to its founders who had dreamed and worked hard to make this Institution a center of learning for everyone.

The University of San Agustin is a private university in Iloilo City, the Philippines founded in 1904 by the Augustinian Friars under the inspiration of St. Augustine, Doctor and Father of the Church. The University of San Agustin (USA) has continued the rich legacy of scholarship exemplified by St. Augustine, the Library of the Church; Fr. Johann Gregor Mendel, O.S.A., the First Geneticist; and Fr. Manuel Blanco, O.S.A., author of Flora de Filipinas. The university is named in honor of fourth century saint Augustine of Hippo, a key figure in the doctrinal development of Western Christianity and a Doctor of the Church.

The university’s campus, situated in the very heart of the city on General Luna Street, has a modern gymnasium, an auditorium, several conference and seminar rooms, science, computer and speech laboratories, a museum, a bookstore, a library, an instructional media center, and tennis and badminton courts. The university has a diverse student population. Over the years, school enrollment has dramatically increased, resulting in the decision to move the high school department to a new campus in the suburbs of Sambag, Jaro in June 1995.

Saint Paul University Iloilo (SPUI) is a premier institution for higher education recognized for excellence in student-centered learning, transformative teaching, challenging academic programs, innovative research, and responsive community service. Impelled by the love of CHRIST, and on the invitation and support of His Eminence Denis Cardinal Dougherty, Bishop of Jaro, The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres began their apostolic activities in Iloilo by establishing St. Paul’s Hospital in 1911. Their primary aim was to care for the poor and the sick, However, the care of the poor and the sick was not the only apostolic mission of the Sisters of St. Paul; they have also been founded for the purpose of training and educating the young. So it was, with the great desire emboldened by the formative component of their mission, coupled with the pressing need of the hospital for trained competent Catholic nurses, the Sisters under the leadership of Mother Josephine de Jesus opened the School of Nursing in June, 1946. The school was formally declared as a university in 2004.

It is one of the leading educational institutions in the country, especially when it comes to marine science education and research, fisheries, and aquaculture. It also has regional studies programs on the preservation and enrichment of the Visayan cultural heritage as well as a full complement of other subjects and majors. There are four campuses, in Miagao, Iloilo City, Tacloban, and Cebu, with Miagao being its main campus with its central administration offices. Most of its students are drawn from the Visayas and the Visayan linguistic groups, attracting many of the best students of this region. Many of the leaders of the Visayas have graduated from UPV or its predecessor institutions.

College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences(formerly the College of Fisheries) - the forefront of fisheries education in the country. Over the years, the College has instituted degree programs that address the need for sustainable development of the country’s fisheries resources and respond to the call for highly trained manpower in the field. Its curricular offerings, both in the graduate and undergraduate levels, aim to impart to students theoretical knowledge and practical skills as well as develop analytical capabilities as tools toward innovative approaches and solutions to fisheries and related programs.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) - provides the general education program that is the foundation of all academic programs in the University. The College equips the students with basic knowledge in the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities; the skills necessary to communicate and to analyze and integrate knowledge; and the ability to learn independently and think critically. it offers interdisciplinary programs with double major supportive of, or complementary to, those offered by other colleges.

School of Technology (SoTech) - established on March 29, 1984 as the 5th degree-granting unit of U.P. in the Visayas during the 966th Meeting of the Board of Regents. The School’s mission is to provide highly trained manpower, generate appropriate and environment-friendly technologies, disseminate information and transfer knowledge and technology; and assist in the proper management of the environment for regional development and nation building.

West Visayas State University (WVSU) is a state university located in Iloilo City. The School was founded on June 16, 1902, forming part of the early Philippine school system under the American regime. Known as the Iloilo Normal Institute and later the Iloilo Normal School, WVSU was one of the five tributary schools created to address the need to train Filipino teachers under the tutelage of the Thomasites. At present, West Visayas State University has 67 programs offered in the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorate levels in its main campuses. West Visayas State University vigorously pursues its mission to produce globally competitive lifelong learners. The University has consistently maintained its leadership among institutions of higher learning in Western Visayas[citation needed] and dynamically evolves as it strives towards its vision to be among the top ten universities in Southeast Asia by 2015.

West Visayas State University is one of the first institutions to have its academic programs accredited to higher levels having surpassed the quality standards for instruction, research and extension. As of 2007, eight banner programs were recognized with Level III reaccredited status by the Accrediting Agency for Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP). Three of these programs are first in the country to achieve such recognition (nursing, biology, and special education.) Level II accreditation has been granted to College of Mass Communications, PESCAR and the College of Agriculture and Forestry. Over the years, the University has etched a mark in professional licensure examinations. Medical doctors, nurses and teacher education graduates have consistently topped exams all over the country and the university passing percentage in various exams have been well-above the national mean.

Central Philippine University (CPU) is a non-stock, non-profit Christian institution of higher learning in Iloilo City.It was founded in 1905 as the Jaro Industrial School by missionaries of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. The school has the distinction of having organized the first student government in the country - the Jaro Industrial School Republic, and one of the oldest student’s newspapers - the Central Echo. In 102 years, CPU has grown from an elementary school with 17 pupils to a widely known university with an enrollment of over 12,000. The 24-hectare campus, which was originally chosen for its quiet and relative isolation, is now a veritable community by itself, with more than 30 buildings used for classrooms and support facilities.

The University sits on 240,000 sq. m. (24-hectare campus), located along Lopez Jaena Street, Jaro, Iloilo City, was originally chosen for its quiet and relative isolation but is now a veritable community by itself with more than 35 buildings used for classrooms and support facilities. Landscaping and propagation of flowering and ornamental plants all over the campus. Supervised by Campus Beautification Office, it is one of the reasons CPU was declared a Tourism Site by the City Council of Iloilo City. The landscaping and flowering of the campus is a continuous project that makes the campus very attractive not only to the students, but to visitors as well. The city council mentioned CPU as home to the largest library in Western Visayas, the Henry Luce III Library, with more than 200,000 volumes including holdings of special collections like the 40.000 United Nations Documents, World War II Documents, American Studies Resource Center, Meyer-Asian Collection, Food and Agriculture Organization and Elizabeth Knox Sacred Music Collection.
