Best Time To Visit

Surprisingly, Bardhaman doesn't see very harsh temperatures in any part of the year. The summers are warm, and winters are cool. However, the temperature never gets unbearable. The worst in summers is well below 35 degrees Celcius and the lowest in winters is never below 10 degrees Celcius. Still, it being a holiday, you should get to experience the best weather. Hence, the ideal time is from November to March, excluding January and February.

How to Reach Bardhaman

Bardhaman is well connected to the rest of India by both rail and road. Regular rail and bus services ply to and fro the city of Bardhaman, buses being operated both by private and government owners, especially the West Bengal State Road Transport Corporation. Owing to the absence of a proper, commercial airport, the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, 102 km away from Bardhaman, is the nearest airport that connects Bardhaman to the rest of India. The main Howrah-Delhi railway track also passes through Bardhaman.

By Road

NH 2 runs through the city. Bardhaman has a very easy and well-planned road route. The two main bus stands are Alisha Bus Stand and Nababhat Bus Stand. Regular buses connect Bardhaman to all parts of West Bengal. Some of them even have interstate connecting services.

By Train

Unlike an airport, Bardhaman has its own railway station. The Bardhaman Railway Station connects Bardhaman to all major parts of the country. Trains can be taken from New Delhi and Mumbai. The main Howrah-Delhi railway track also passes through Bardhaman. You can take a local train from Howrah and reach Bardhaman in 2 hours.

Local Transport in Bardhaman

Travelling in the city is mostly done using cabs and, occasionally, buses. The most easy and cheaply available mode of transport is the battery operated rickshaws. The state division also has state run buses covering most of the city. But once you get down at a place, going to nearby places on foot is not only easy, it's also feasible.

108 Shiv Mandir

Perhaps the most unique and enticing structure in all of Bardhaman, the reason it's known as 108 Shiv Temple is because there literally are 108 small temples contracted side by side in a beautiful vertical pattern. The temples are located in Nawabhat which was once famous for the battles of the Pathans and Mughals. The best and the most crowded time to see these temples is during Shivratri when the entire place is lit up with lights and decorations.

Christ Church

The red brick church was built back in 1816 under the supervision of Captain Charles Stuart of the East India Company. The ancient church is still very well maintained, set in the midst of a well trimmed courtyard. The Church also has picked styles from British Architecture.

Golap Bagh

The Gopal Bagh which literally means the garden of roses is arguably the most beautiful tourist place in Bardhaman. It is the Botanical and Zoological garden established by the King Bijoy Chand Mahatab in 1884. The place is believed to have nearly 150 different types of trees including mango, casuarina, eucalyptus, jaam and shimul. The place is full of structures, statues and beautifully landscaped areas. If you plan to visit Golap Bagh, then you should keep a few hours free.

Rajbati

Rajbati or Mahatabmanjil was built by Mahatab Chand Bahadur, back in in 1851.The imposing building houses the administrative office of the Bardhaman University. Maharajdhiraj Uday Chand Women's College and the settlement office lie on the sides. Rajbati. When it was originally unveiled, it was the most beautiful building in all of Bhardaman. The charm is still very much intact.

Krishnasayar Park and Lake

In 1691, the then king of Bhardam constructed a huge artificial lake.-Krishnasayar on nearly 33 acres of land. Later an equally beautiful park was built around it by the Krishasayar trustee board. Competitions, Fairs and Carnivals are often held at the lake. Even otherwise, you can have a rowing experience at the lake or enjoy various flower or art exhibitions. The lake also has an aquarium with tens of fish varieties.

The Deer Park

The Deer Park is Bardhaman's very own mini dose of Wildlife. The park is numerous animals including deer, birds, leopards and tigers. The place also has a guest house if you wish to spend the night.

Kankeleshwari Kalibari

This amazingly intricate structure of Goddess Kali is located in Brishnu Mandir in Kanchan Nagar. The goddess Chamunda is depicted through this sculpture. Made from precious stones and black rocks, the structure is so finely detailed that even the veins running through her many hands look real. The sculpture is also believed to be a symbol of the continuity of life as its made from the stones found on Damoder riverbed after the devastating floods of 1923.

Meghna Saha Planetarium

Inaugurated in 1994, the planetarium has a unique story. it was built by a Japanese Optical Company with assistance from the Japanese and Indian governments. Located at G.T Road, the planetarium has numerous automated models at display. If travelling with children, then this is the one place that combines leisure with education.

Sarbamangala Temple

The temple is highly revered by the natives of Bardhaman. It is also believed that the Goddess fulfills every wish of an earnest heart. This temple situated in Sarbamangala Road. Sarbamangala is actually Goddess Durga in a different form. Another very interesting feature of the temple is that the statue of the goddess and the surrounding temple were built a few decades apart. The goddess was established in 1740 A.D. by the king Kirti Chand while the temple structure was built by king Mahatab Chand.

Science Centre, Bardhaman

Another endeavor by the University of Burdwan, along with the Central and State Governments, the science centre is the classic spectacle of scientific evolution. numerous display along with interesting classes and seminars are arranged over here. The planetarium is located near the front gate of the Burdhaman University. This center is open for all from 11.30 am to 7 pm.

Tomb of Sher Afghan

Numerous tales surround Sher Afghan Khan, his rise to power and eventual demise. Sher Afghan Khan who was the 'tuyuldar' of Bardhaman during Mughal Emperor Jahangir's rule was accused of having conspired with Afghans against the king. He was eventually killed in this confrontation and his wife, Mehrunissa, famously known as Nur Jahan, who was believed to have been extremely beautiful eventually married the King himself. His tomb is one of the most popular sights in Bardhaman. The tomb of Qutbuddin is adjacent to that of Sher Afghans.

Damoder Riverside

The city of Bardhaman is located on the banks of River Damodar. Tourists can sit on the banks of the river and enjoy a picnic or they can hire a boat and enjoy the gentle waves, especially on a pleasant day. But if you are in Bhardaman for a short while, the river is one of the few things you can consider skipping.

Curzon Gate

The majestic Curzon Gate was famously erected in 1903, by the king of Burdwan Maharaja Bijoy Chand Mahatab to celebrate Lord Curzon's visit. Kalyaneshwari Temple

Located on Grand Trunk road, a few km off Barakar, this beautiful temple dedicated to Goddess Kali has a unique story of its own. Built around many decades ago, the temple is believed to have been a haven for dacoits, where they stayed and also offered prayers. The temple complex has many shops selling flowers, incense sticks and other things you may need for the pooja. The beautiful temple has been preserved in its simple original form with minimal renovation. The temple is also believed to fulfill wishes for offspring of childless women.

The prime attraction of Navadwipa, the temple is devoted to Lord Chaitanya, a reincarnation of Lord Krishna who is believed to have been born in Navadwipa. ISKCON Temple, Nabadwip

Radha Rani Temple

One of the most popular temples of Navadwipa, Radha Rani Temple is a symbol of Goddess Radha's love for Lord Krishna. The tale behind the temple is that Radha got angry with Lord Krishna and went into the jungle to avoid him. Lord Krishna spent many days looking for her and finally found her on a full moon night.

Shri Devananda Gaudiya Math

Dedicated to deities Lord Gaura and Lord Gadadhara, this temple is a few hundred years old, built in Champahatti in one of the islands in Navadwipa known as Koladvipa. The temple underwent some much needed renovation a few years ago through which much of its charm has been preserved.

Sri Mahaprabhu Mandir

One of the most revered temples of Navadwipa, Sri Mahaprabhu Temple is located in Srivasa Angan. The temple is subdivided into three shrines. The first is devoted Radha Krishna and Lord Chaitanya. The second to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, for his maha-prakasa-lila, the time when he became the supreme personality of Godhead and the third is dedicated to Sri Sri Gaura-Nitai.

Shiv Mandir

Another temple in Navadwipa is the Shiv Mandir. Contrary to the well maintained, modern looking temples, this temple has been preserved in its pristine form.

Purbasthali Bird Sanctuary

Located a about 8 km off Navadwipa, this bird sanctuary is yet another offering to the thousands of tourists who make their way to this land of Krishna every year. Road connection from Navadwipa is convenient to make a day trip to the sanctuary.

With it's 3 km long oxbow lake, the sanctuary has hundreds of species of birds and is known to have the clearest waters in all of the wetlands. The place is sure a photographers paradise.

Pushpa Samadhi Mandir

A memorial to ISKCON's Founder Srila Prabhupada, this place is one of the main attractions. The main shrine is surrounded by a museum depicting his life using different exhibits.

How to Reach

Navadvipa is well connected to the rest of India by both railways and roadways. There is, however, no direct flight connectivity to Navadvipa. The nearest available airport is the famous Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Kolkata, which is approximately 125 km away from Navadvipa, accessible in the shortest way by NH 19.

By Road

If you plan to travel by road, Navadwipa is connected with nearby places through easily available bus services. Kolkata is about 120 kilometres away. Yoga Peeth

This temple is the birth place of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and the structure is built in white marbled towers 30 m high. Yoga Peeth in Mayapur is a center of excellence teaching Yoga, Vedas and meditation. It is assumed that Chaitanya was born under a neem tree. This tree is still seen there in the premise of Yoga Peeth. There is a hut which contains the clay models and statues displaying the life and philosophies of Saint.

A small shrine devoted to Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur who raised the fund for building the original temple is also located nearby.

Sri Chaitanya Math

Founded by Acharya of the Gaudiya Math named Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Maharaja, the Math is dedicated to Radha Govinda and has four altars dedicated to the Vaishnava acharyas namely Sri Nimbarka, Sri Madhvacarya, Sri Ramanujacarya and Sri Visnuswami.

Chand Kazi's Samadhi

hand Kazi, a person with Islamic faith, was the magistrate of Navadvipa who opposed the Harinam Sankirtana movement in Mayapur and broke the mridanga of Srivash Pandit, who led the Sankritana. Later Kazi became an ardent disciple of Shree Chaitanya Prabhu and the Samadhi commemorates his transformation.

Sri Devananda Gaudiya Math

Sri Gaura Gadadhara Gaudiya Math, is an ancient temple situated at Champahatti in one of the islands in Navadvipa known as Koladvipa, was established by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Maharaja. It is home to Lord Gaura and Gadadhara.

How to reach:

From Kolkata go straight to Durgapur Expressway via Dakhineswar or Vidyasagar setu and proceed towards Bardhaman. You will at first cross the Dankuni toll plaza and after driving for nearly 40 Km from the toll plaza, you will cross Azad Hind Dhaba and then Hindusthan Hotel on the left, take the next left and turn right under the bridge, this is Bosipur. Now drive straight towards Halusai which is approximately 19 km from Bosipur. Then take left on to Polaba-Khanyan road and drive towards Khanyan Railway Station. After 10 mins drive from Halusai Itachuna Rajbari is on the left hand side of the road.

Visiting Places

Dakhil Darwaza

A very important monument, located in Gaur, Dakhil Darwaza is a surviving ruin of an old castle from the 15th century. The gate itself is a gateway to a fort. It’s 8 km from city center. In the south-east corner of the fort, high wall encloses the ruins of an old palace. The gate is also popularly known as Salaami Darwaza as cannons used to be fired from it.

Gour

If you wish to explore the rich and diverse history of Bengal, Gour is the place for you. Located along the banks of the holy river Ganges, this is one of the oldest residential colonies existing in the state. Although the place is now in ruins, its unique history and magnificent architecture are more than enough to attract tourism from places far and wide. This settlement was the capital of ancient Bengal and was also a center of political and state affairs relating to the realm. It’s 8 km from city center.

Believed to have been discovered by Lord Lakshman, this town was earlier called Lakshmanavati. When Muslims conquered the state, its name changed to Lakhnauti. The records relating to the life and times of Gour can be traced back to 1198, which was around the time when Muslims had taken over the state.
This destination has quite a number of ancient monuments and their ruins within its perimeter. The most popular ones include Bada Darwaza, Eunuchs' Mosque, Tantipar Mosque, Dakhil Darwaza, Kadam Rasut Mosque and Firoz Minar. Tucked away in the lap of lush greenery, this is the perfect place to discover and rediscover history!

Firoz Minar

The Minar is located a kilometer away from the Dakhil Darwaza. Built during Sultan Saifuddin Feroze Shah's rule, this five-storey tower is often touted as Malda's Qutab Minar. It’s 15 km from city center. The first three storeys of the tower have twelve adjacent faces each, and the uppermost two storeys are circular in shape. The tourists can take the flight right up till the top of the tower. It is built in the Tughlaqi style of architecture and is also known as the Pir-Asha-Minar or the Chiragdani.

Chamkati Masjid Chika Mosque

Sultan Yusuf Shah built the Mosque in 1475. The name has a very unique origin. It is called the Chika Mosque because it sheltered a number of Chikas i.e. bats. It’s 16 km from city center. In addition to beautiful Arabic carvings, which are still partly visible, the mosque also bears Hindu temple architecture, adding to its uniqueness.

Jauhra Kali Mandir

Amongst the plethora of Muslim Relics, Malda also has a famous Hindu Temple - The Temple of Jauhra Kali. The temple is beautiful, made on a raised platform and surrounded by trees. It’s 1 km from city center.

Adina Dear Park

About 20 km off Malda is the Adina Deer Park. The park is an excellent place to witness numerous deer in their natural habitat. Cheetals or Spotted Deer and Nilgai are the two most famous species here. It’s 15 km from city center. The park is governed by the forest department and also serves as a home for numerous migratory birds.

Adina Mosque

Adina Mosque bears a strong resemblance to the Great Mosque of Damascus as it consists of bricks designed with stones. Built by Sikandar Shah in the 14th century, the second sultan of the Ilyas dynasty, the Adina Mosque was the largest mosque in India at the time. It’s 16 km from city center. A lot of natural calamities have damaged it but haven't been able to take away its marvelous glory. It is often said that the mosque was built by the king to commemorate his victory over the then king of Delhi - Firoz Shah Tughluq.

Malda Museum

Located off Bandh road, the Malda Museum preserves the architectural and anthropological samples of the region dating back to 1500 year old artifacts. It’s 2 km from city center.

Baroduari Mosque

The Baroduari Mosque is the largest in Malda. The Mosque's name, literally means 12 doors, though it has only eleven. The mosque was started by Allauddin Hussein Shah, but he died before its completion. It’s 14 km from city center. The construction was later completed by his son, Nasiruddin Nusrat Shah. The mosque was the first of its kind, built in Arabic style architecture.

Jagjibanpur

Situated about 35 km off Malda town, Jagjivanpur, which is now an important archeological sight was a long forgotten place until the discovery of a copper-plate inscription of the Pala emperor Mahendrapaladeva and the structural remains of a 9th-century Buddhist Vihara - Nandadirghika-Udranga Mahavihara. Excavation work has been carried out and old remains of an entire ruined city have been found ever since.

Kadam Rasul Mosque

Kadam Rasul Mosque derives its name from the stone tablet, which bears the footprints of Prophet Muhammad, kept in the mosque. The mosque was built in 1530 by Sultan Nasiruddin Nusrat Shah. It’s 16 km from city center. The thing that makes this mosque stand out are the four black marble towers on its four corners. Opposite to the mosque is Fateh Khan's tomb, a commander of the Aurangzeb army. Ironically, the tomb is made in Hindu Chala style.

Eklakhi Mausoleum

One of the most breathtaking sites of Pandua Malda, this tomb is truly one of a kind. It has an inscription of Lord Ganesh and a converted son of a Hindu Emperor is believed to have been buried here.It’s 16 km from city center.

Luko Churi Gate

The Lakhchhipi Darwaza or Lukochuri Gate is built on the South East corner of the Kadam Rasool Mosque. Shah Shuja is believed to have built this imposing structure back in 1655 in the Mughal architectural style. It’s 16 km from city center. The name is derived from the game of hide & seek that the king used to play with his begums. However, who built this structure is unclear. Another school of historians claim that it was built by Allauddin Hussein Shah in 1522 and this double-storeyed Darwaza operated as the main gateway to the palace.

Lattan Mosque

A lot of tales surround the construction of this mosque. However, historians believe it was built by Sultan Shamsuddin Yusuf Shah in 1475. The structure was originally built with intricate work of precious stones and colors. It’s 17 km from city center. Some of the past remnants are still visible. Due to its once colorful demeanor, the Mosque is popularly called the Painted Mosque. The mosque has an arched roof, supported by octagonal pillars.

How to reach

By road: Malda has easy road access. Located on NH 34, Malda is about 350 km away from Kolkata. If you do not want to hire an exclusive cab, then a bus can easily be taken for a nominal rent of under Rs.150. North Bengal State transport runs daily buses from nearby places to Malda.

By rail: Malda Town is the main railway station, lending Malda excellent connectivity, not just with nearby places like Kolkata, but also Delhi and Mumbai. Trains are pretty regular, but they do not run on a daily basis.

Local transport: The intracity transport, especially travelling between old Malda and New Malda (English Bazaar), is maintained by city run transport facilities. The rates are fixed by the municipality so you need not worry about haggling or being cheated. Also along with autos and rickshaws, intra city bus route is also widespread.

Best time to visit

October, November and March are the best months to visit Malda. Malda experiences a very hot summer and overflowing monsoons. Though summertime doesn't have any issues, the heat may get overwhelming. Monsoon showers are very frequent and often disruptive. Hence, the early winter and early spring season are the ideal time, owing to the comfortable climate and picturesque backdrop. Local tribal people can be seen taking bath in the river and getting sun kissed on the river beds. Herds of cows and other cattle are found bathing while crossing river. It’s beautiful country life – a life that gets easily framed in your mind will took everyone for surprise. After crossing the valley, the main entrance of Chilkigarh Rajbari can be reached. It looks more like a historical monument counting its day before getting lost in the oblivion.

On the entrance of the palace ground, one can have 360 views of this place. Chilkigarh Rajbari resembles big building displaying its wounds due to the negligence of its authority. A West Bengal government office placard is there pasted on the building facade. But there are no signs of any people around. A big chariot (Lagannath dev rath) was parked inside a hall. In that vast complex, on the left side of the entrance, there stands a beautiful Temple, local people called it Shiva temple. There is a beautiful temple depicting cultural richness of Jungle Mahal and Jagannath temple standing just opposite to the Shiva temple. This temple is extremely beautiful, and its old architecture on the walls depicts richness of the local culture. But, this is a neglected heritage site. The whole mandir is bounded behind an iron gate. Jungle and bushed are eating its beauty. There is no signboard about this place. On being checked with the localists, it is being informed that it is a Jagannath temple.

On the outskirts of the Garhbeta town in West Medinipur district of West Bengal, lies a beautiful anomaly of nature. The plain landscape that marks the area of West Bengal is disrupted here by tall gorges formed over thousands of years by the Silabati River. The wide red soil gorge is locally called 'Gongoni Danga' or 'Gongoni Khola'. Formed after a long period of natural soil erosion and river movement, the Gangani Gorge is a beautiful and unique marvel that is frequented by locals and tourists alike.

Just a few hours away from Kolkata, Gangani is a destination that brings together a stunning coalition of green forests, sandstone hills and fertile riverbeds. When monsoons arrive, the Silabati River can be seen flowing through the Gangani (Gongoni) Gorge, which is known to resemble the Grand Canyon of Arizona. Government authorities recently built a staircase at the highest point of Gangani that goes all the way down to the river, and when it’s not raining, you can even cross the river on foot as the water is not too deep.

Gangani or Gongoni finds a mention in the epic of Mahabharata as well. Locals believe that this is the place where Bheem, one of the Pandavas, killed a demon called Bakasura.

How To Reach

Gangani is easily accessible from Kolkata by both road and rail. You can either take a road trip till here or cover the distance on a scenic train ride.

By road: If you have decided to drive down to the 'Grand Canyon of West Bengal', then take the NH6 from Kolkata all the way to Uluberia via Bagnan. From there you can take two different routes, either go towards Chandrakona Town via Ghatal or Salboni via NH60. Gangani is just a few kilometers from either of the towns.

By rail: The nearest town to Gangani is Garhbeta, which has its own railway station. All you need to do is board the Rupashi Bangla Express from Satragachhi Station at Howrah and get off at Garbeta Station after a few hours.

Places To Visit

Sarbamangala Mandir: The Sarbamangala Mandir is a 16th century temple built by the Bagri king, Nripati Singha. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Durga, whose idol here is carved out of basalt stone. The complex is also a fine example of unique Oriya architecture.

Raikota Fort: Built somewhere between 1555-1610 AD by the Chauhan Rajas of Bagri, the Raikota Fort is remnant of the glorious Oriya architecture. Though all that remains now are ruins, but it still makes for a great spot to watch the sun go down.

Bagri's Krishnarai Jiu Temple: The areas around Gangani are primarily known for being home to ancient temples. Bagri's Krishnarai Jiu is one of such temples that holds great spiritual and traditional value for locals. Made out of black basalt stone, the temple was built by Rajyadhar Roy, a minister of the Bagri king, Gajapati Singha.

Gangani (pronounced 'Gongoni') is not exactly a hidden destination for people in West Bengal. From school kids to rowdy teenagers, a large variety of groups find their way to the shores of Silabati River to have a good time. So don't expect Gangani to be an isolated and quiet corner in the lap of nature. But you can be a little clever about planning your trip so you reach at a time when it's not crowded. A suggestion would be to reach Gangani at the crack of dawn and witness the sunrise here for a beautiful and peaceful experience.

A heritage of Howrah

The Andul Rajbari which is locally popular as Ananda Dham is a popular tourist destination in Howrah district of West Bengal. We planned a short trip to visit the Andul Rajbari recently. One fine monsoon morning we hired a car and reached Andul. Sri Chaitanya during his holy journey set his steps in Dakshin Nabadwip. And the place came to be known as Andul which etymologically comes from “ Ananda Dhuli” meaning the holy dust from the foot of Lord Chaitanya.

Raj Bari

From main road , it took us around 10-15 minutes to find the Andul Rajbari winding past the narrow roads crowded by innumerable shops. The royal structure adorned by massive pillars in the front and a large open field greeted us. The open field is the place where the fairs take place on relevant occasions. The Rajbari, disperse over 10 bighas and containing more than 100 rooms, could be reached in about 10 mins in the Andul station in a cycle rickshaw. The building is in dilapidated state now but the huge structure and lofty pillars talk of the affluence the royal family needs to have enjoyed in the past. It’s heartbreaking to witness the neglect and ill-maintenance that is driving the grand heritage building into ruins. The large open ground in front of this Rajbari has now been transformed into a football playing ground for the locals.

Annopurna Mandir

Another notable place to visit is the Annapurna Temple along with its 14 Shiva temples. One is almost sure to miss the entrance gate of the temple complex but thanks to the worn out Nahabatkhana on top of the entrance gate which acts as a landmark.

On entering the temple complex we found a beautiful cannon which is said to be gifted by Lord Clive.People from all age brackets gather in the courtyard and seat on the floor to relax. The priest was seen busy performing the daily worship rituals moving from one shiva temple to the other.

Rajnarayan Roy established the temple in 1845. His mother during her younger days often visited the Annapurna temple in Varanasi as she was a devotee of Annapurna. But with age crippling in , she was unable to continue the annual journey any longer. Her husband Kashinath Roy started building the Annapurna temple along with the 14 Shiva temples in Andul itself for his beloved wife. But Kashinath died in between and his son Rajnarayan fulfilled his parent’s wish by constructing the same. Currently the temple is run and maintained by Andul Raj Debuttor Estate.

The walls and ceilings of the temple were beautifully decorated and coloured. Astadhaatu is an alloy of metals which is traditionally used for making idols of gods in Bengal. Initially the idols of Shiva and Annapurna in the temple were made of Astadhaatu but were later replaced with concrete idols after a robbery took place. There is a brass throne were Annapurna is seated. A Shiva statue is found standing beside Annapurna begging for Alms. The statue is called “ Bhikari Shiva” . There are several salgram shilas arranged in ascending order of size in front of the Annapurna Idol. There are two more rooms on either side of the main sanctum sanctorum. One houses Shalgram Shila of Vishnu and a Gopal. The other has seven Shiva Lingas which are collectively called Baneshwar Shiva.

The cannon lies in the center of the courtyard. Earlier it was fired on two occasions during the Durga Puja. One before 15 days of Bodhon to mark the festive season and the other to alert all the villagers to attend the Sandhi Puja sacrifice ritual before Navami. Now this firing ritual is topped due to shortage of ammunition and also due to an accident that took place in Burdwan due to a similar cannon firing ritual.

The main festival of the temple is Annapurna Puja. Also the temple was founded on the auspicious day of Chaitra Sankranti and huge bhog takes place on the same day. 12 brahmins are treated with mahabhog. Apart from that Dol Utsav, Durga Puja and other top festivities take place with huge pomp. Fairs are held in the field adjacent to the Palace grounds.

Rail: Andul is your nearest station, which is connected with all the Howrah station. Regular trains are available from Howrah as well.

Samtaber ( Abode of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay)

Deulti is rich in its heritage and culture. Deulti is the village that leads to a tinier habitation called Samtaber which is popular among the tourists for being the abode of the famous author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhya located about 3km from Deulti station, and his house is maintained by his family.

This place gave Bengali literature one of its most prominent authors, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. His house has been renovated and made public by local authorities and the Government. The river Rupnarayan is just a distance away from this home. It is said that he used to sit in his study room and watch the beautiful Rupnarayan while writing his masterpieces. He wrote ‘Biprodas’, his last novel, from here.

Leisure Park

Right beside the heritage site was a park area for leisure. You can pay an entry fee and step inside. The cloudy weather did not dampen our spirits. We strolled inside the park, talking and appreciating the beauty of such a simple village. We heard the chirping of birds from the surrounding trees and spotted a few feathered folks that are rare in the city. The poetic me started reciting some poems of Rabindranath Tagore. My cultural side that had been starving for ages, was replenished and rejuvenated.

The People

Most people in the village were literate and all the villagers respected the concept of education. They think highly of teachers and revered them. As I spoke to the caretaker about Sarat Chandra’s works, he was more than happy to take us to the late author’s house.

After a hearty Bengali lunch at a hotel, we were taken to Sarat Chandra Kuthi, a heritage site, restored and maintained by West Bengal tourism. The place had an air of a respected past. We toured the house, although it was a very humble abode of the great author. He wrote for the common man and his house reflected this aspect of his personality.

How To Reach

By Car

Deulti is accessible by car from Kolkata. It is about 60 kilometers from Kolkata to Deulti and it takes about 1 hour and 33 minutes. Drive along the Vidyasagar Setu, popularly known as the Second Hooghly Bridge and take the route of the Kona Highway. After driving for a few hours, you will reach the National Highway 6. Drive along the NH6 to pass Panchla, Uluberia, Kulgachhia, Chandpur, Bagnan and finally you will reach the Deulti crossing. Turn left at Deulti Crossing onto Deulti Station Road. The village of Deulti lies at a short from the Deulti Railway Station.

By Bus

There are four buses that go from Kolkata to Deulti via NH6. You can board a bus from College Square and reach Deulti in about two hours. The timings are 2.16 PM, 2.47 PM and 2.33 PM. From Esplanade, you can take Deulti bus too.

By Train

Deulti station is about 50 km from Howrah junction and takes 1 Hr 30 min by local train. From Howrah, you can take any Midnapore bound trains and get down at Deulti station. It is recommended to take less crowded local trains like Mecheda local, Paskura Local or Kharagpur local.

A visit to the temple ruins and the recently renovated Rajbari with its antique furniture, sprawling lawns and verandahs lined with enormous pillars would be a nice experience. The famous Boro Kachari Mandir is around 6 kms from here. The Barood Ghar (ammunition depot) of the British army located just beside the river is worth a visit.

BIRDWATCHING

Bawali and its surrounding villages have a good collection of migratory birds. Wagtails, Parakits, Barn Owls and a whole lot of bee-catchers, kingfishers, and local species are found in abundance here due to the lush greenery all around. A nearby village named Burul becomes home to thousands of cranes, cormorants, and storks between their nesting season of June and September.

VILLAGE WALKS

There is a village of 300 households. The outskirts of Bawali is marked by infinite stretches of paddy fields and flower farms dotted with thatched mud houses. You can hire a bicycle so that you take a ride along the bumpy muddy village roads. An arched alley made of red bricks and pillars with Victorian flower motifs shall lead you to the temple.

Last week of December is the best time to visit Bishnupur . The Bishnupur Festival is a unique experience. Every year the weeklong festival starts on 27th December and ends on 31st December. Bishnupur is very hot from April to September but experiences pleasant weather from October to March. By Bus

Rasmancha is the oldest brick temple and unique in its structural design. It has a cubic shrine, pillared corridors on three sides and a pyramidal roof. It was built in the late 16th Century.

Jorbangla Temple :

Built by Malla King Raghunath Singh in 1655 AD, the temple made of laterite bricks has an appearance of two thatched huts joined together and surmounted by a single tower. The temple's roofs and walls have classical Chala style of architecture in terracotta. The panels and walls depict the lives of the Royalty and stories from Epics.

Dalmadol/Dalmardan Cannon :

Dalmadol/Dalmardan cannon, is said to be built by Madanmohan himself to defend his kingdom from the Marathas in 17th Century during King Gopal Sing's reign. The cannon is 3.84m length and its inner diameter of the muzzle face is only 29 cm whereas the outer diameter is 66.5 cm. The cannon was built by 63 rings, which were formed in three concentric layers of iron. It represents the glory of Malla Kings of Bishnupur.

But next time it could be Khoai which is a ecological formation of small canyons resulting from constant erosion caused by wind and water. What To Do

Sonajhuri is probably one of the cleanest forests of West Bengal. Morning strolls inside the beautiful forest is itself a treat. And if you come sometime during winter, the entire forest ground is covered with tiny golden sonajhuri flowers. Visit to the Saturday Haat is a unique experience. Vehicles are not allowed inside the Haat. So the place is absolutely pollution free. Hundreds of artisans come to the Haat with their artefacts. As there is no electricity the Haat starts by 11 in the morning continues till the sun sets. The artefacts are so unique that you feel like buying whatever you see and especially the prices make you feel that the place is “shoppers’ paradise”. Apart from designer dress materials all modern and fashionable accessories are available in the fair and that too at a very reasonable price. Bauls sitting under the sonajhuri trees and singing with their single string instrument, ektara, brings a different charm.

Mukutmanipur is about 400 km from Calcutta, in Bankura district, near the border of West Bengal and Bihar. Shantiniketan is a neighbourhood of Bolpur city in Bolpur subdivision of Birbhum district in West Bengal, India, approximately 165 km north of Kolkata. Known to few, mainly as Rabindranath Tagore's home and now a university, Santiniketan is a small town located in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. Poush Mela

Poush Mela is the occasion when Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, along with twelve others, adopted the Brahmo. The Mela is the remembrance of this very day on the 7th Day of the Poush month. The fair is a perfect example of the amalgamation of different culture and traditions. Performances by students of Santiniketan are what lie in store for you if you happen to visit the place in December. The famous Poush Mela is organised in the city of Shantiniketan, which is a small town in the Birbhum district of the Indian state of West Bengal. The precise location of the fair was the ground opposite to the Brahma temple in Shantiniketan in the initial years of its celebration. However, now it occurs in the field in Purbapalli.

A prayer meeting is held afterwards at Chhatimtala, and the inauguration is completed after the prayer meeting, when all those attending the meet proceed to Uttarayan, with sweet hymns of songs on their lips.

The mela offers a peek into the Bengali cultural heritage, as Bengali folk music is performed live at the fair. The traditional Baul music is the primary type to be performed for the audience. Folk dances are also performed in the fair. Apart from these, tribal sports are organised, projecting the tribal culture of Bengal.
The Mela occurs on a large scale, with almost 1500 stalls in it. Traditional handicrafts and fabrics are some of the items that can be found in these stalls, although they offer varieties of stuff for the visitors. According to the official statistics, an average of 3500 people gathers at the mela on each day of its occurrence, making it a figure of nearly 10,000 in three days.

Tagore's ashrama

Known as Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore's abode, Tagore's Ashram is one of the must visit places in Santiniketan. It was founded in 1863 by his father, Maharishi Devendranath Tagore. A heritage site well preserved by the authorities, this place is a giant mark left by our beloved Gurudev. The site has archived his life in the form of his literary works, his awards, and accolades, daily items used by him and his love for nature. One cannot help but feel his presence all over the area. Housing every detail of Tagore's life, it takes visitors back in time. Along with the very well-curated museum, it houses other important buildings including the 5 Tagore houses. School classes and primary functions are held under the Amra Kunja (mango grove). Irrespective of whether you have read his works or not, this place is bound to instill a sense of pride in you and give you peace of mind.

It is famous for its very relaxing atmosphere with some of the most picturesque views in the whole of Santiniketan. The foundations of this place were laid down by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore way back in 1863. The primary purpose of the ashram was to spread 'Brahmo Dharma', a religious movement started in the late nineteenth century. While the movement was started by Raja Ram Mohun Roy, it was his successor and Rabindranath's father, Debendranath who strengthened it.

In 1901, the ashram was converted to an open-air school by Gurudev which eventually came to be globally recognized as Vishwa Bharati University. A brainchild of Gurudev's excellent vision and dream for modern education, it followed the traditional Gurukul style teaching. Till date, it is one of the most visually enthralling campuses and provides world-class education to students.

Chattimtala

Deer Park

About 3 km from the main campus is the Ballavpur forest. The forest shelters a naturally bred large family of deer. It is now known as the deer park.

The small rural town is located about 7 km from Santiniketan. The drive, and if you prefer the walk, takes you through the beautiful landscape of semi urban India.

Sangeet bhavan

The Sangeet Bhavan is the block that fosters talents of Music and Dance. Regular practices are held and one can see students taking singing or dancing lessons at all times in the day.

Nippon Bhavan

Nippon Bhavana, just like the China Bhawan, aims to foster Japanese- Indo relations. The Centre, though located in the main campus is an autonomous body and not controlled by the university.

Bibhuti Bhushan Wildlife Sanctuary locally known as Parmadan Sanctuary is just over three hours drive from Kolkata and is popular for deer, snakes and varied species of birds. Located on the banks of Ichamati River, you can take a lazy country boat ride through the forest or a refreshing jungle stroll watching the friendly deer prance around. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1980 to pay tribute to the famous Bengali writer Bibhutibhusan Bandhyopadhay. The Sanctuary has a deer population of more than 250 and a heaven for bird spotters. You will get to see peacocks, woodpeckers, sankhacheel, nilkhantha, fultusi and many others. The Sanctuary is also an abode of monkeys, tortoise, and comprises of trees such as shishu, minjiri, tut, arjun, shimul, shishir, bamboo and many others. The river Ichamati crisscrosses the forest and a boat ride takes you to the entire Sanctuary.

The forest can be visited throughout the year but it is better to avoid the forest during the rainy season as most of the parts are flooded during that monsoon months. The winters bring many birds to the forest. Hence winters months are the best time.

How To Reach

The nearest railhead is Bongaon. Local trains are available from Sealdah in Kolkata. From Bongaon you will have to take a rickshaw to Motiganj. From Motiganj take a Duttafuli bound bus and get down at Naldugri. Parmadan is about 3 kms from Naldugri. You will also get Duttafuli bound buses from Ranaghat also (20 km). By Road Parmadan is 33 km from Bongaon ( India-Bangladesh border ) and 110 km from Kolkata. Buses: CSTC buses for Naldugri are available from Esplande Bus Terminal. From Motiganj take a Duttafuli bound bus and get down at Naldugri. Parmadan is about 3 kms from Naldugri.

The best thing to do is country boat ride through the forest or a refreshing jungle stroll watching the friendly deer prance around. The beautiful Ichamati River flows through this 92-hectare sanctuary in North 24-Parganas. The Parmadan Forest is a haven for a healthy population of nearly 250 deer. The best time to watch them is when they are fed by the Forest officials. Presently, their feeding time is at 4:00 pm and 9:00 am. You can visit Naldungri located nearby and visit Chuatiya – the border village between India and Bangladesh just an hour’s journey from Parmadan. Best place to eat inside the forest is the tourist lodge maintained by West Bengal Forest Department.

Achipur, a hamlet on the banks of the Hooghly, is just like any other Bengal village. But 300 years ago, this village, 30 km from Taratala, bustled with activity and was dominated by the Chinese people . This was the first Chinese settlement in the country. On every Chinese New Year’s Day and for the rest of that month, Achipur turns into a mini Chinatown. Thousands gather at the Chinese temple here, especially on Sundays, to celebrate the new year. Recently the members of Kolkata’s Chinese community have pooled in nearly 50 lakh rupees to restore the temple and build boarding and lodging facilities for the community. East India Company documents show that a Chinese trader called Atchew Tong sailed into the village in the second decade of the 18th century and settled down. Others soon followed him. Atchew started a sugar plantation attached with a mill in the village.

The best time to visit this place is during the 2nd week of February that is during the celebration of Chinese New Year. During this period a fair is held which is visited by a major part of the Chinese community. At that time, you can also get a glimpse of Chinese culture.

How To Reach

Achipur is situated at a distance of 33 kilometers from Kolkata and can be easily reached by bus. The buses of route No. 77 depart from Esplanade and the journey takes around 2 hours. You need to get down at the bus stop called Boro Battala and from there, walk 15 minutes to Chinamantala, which is an ancient temple site. A journey by car takes less than an hour to reach the place through Budge Budge Road.

What To Do

The Chinese temple which was built long ago by the Chinese people is the main attraction of this place. The temple has typical Chinese wooden carvings and Chinese deities, Khuda and Khudi, are worshipped here. The place offers a grand view of the river. A walk along the bank of the river lined with banyan trees to enjoy the river view to the fullest. One can spend some time at the ‘Budge Budge Ferry Ghat’ & watch the ships crossing the Hooghly. The Ferry Ghat of Budge Budge is also historically significant because Swami Vivekananda landed here when he returned from his Chicago trip.

BURUL BIRD SANCTUARY

Burul is a riverside village just 15 km from Bawali Farmhouse. Each year from June to September thousands of storks, cranes, and commorants flock here to nest and raise their children. Burul becomes a bird watcher’s paradise during this season. A nesting site of this dimension is a rare sight so near to Kolkata.

BAROOD GHAR

Ships traveling towards Kolkata from Bay of Bengal carrying gunpowder had to deposit their stock in these storehouses called Barood Ghar located beside River Ganges. During British rule, ships were only allowed to carry 100 lbs of gunpowder with them for emergency calls and signaling. During their return journey, the ships would collect their deposits from this Barood Ghar on the banks of the river.

BAWALI RAJBARI

It was during the early 17th century, Basudeb Ray a prominent official of the Mughal Court of Emperor Akbar was bestowed the land ownership of the area of Bawali. His descendant Harananda Mondal was one of the earliest to found the Zamindari at Bawali with the help of the Bawali tribesmen. Today, this 300-year old palatial Bawali Rajbari spread over three acres of land and graced by ponds and gardens is being meticulously renovated to become a heritage hotel. The Bawali Rajbari is built around a lush courtyard with Corinthian pillars lining the verandah.

BORO KACHARI

At Boro Kachari pilgrims come in thousands to a wish-fulfilling sacred Peepal tree. Believers take a dip in the nearby pond and circumambulate the tree with deep devotion. Newborn babies are brought to the tree with wishes for their health and a long life ahead.

RAIPUR RIVERSIDE

The riverside road from Raipur to Burul is a splendid drive along the banks of River Ganges called Hooghly River. This five-kilometer stretch crosses few villages, piers and stooping Banyan trees along the river. Stop for a time to witness fisherman casting their nets and the passing country boats and mammoth cargo vessels.

GOPINATH JIU TEMPLE

The ruins of this nine-domed (Navratna) temple built in 1794 is one of the finest examples of Bengal’s temple architecture. Now in ruins, this temple is accompanied by a Jhulan Mancha, Rash Mancha and a Nat Mandir. It is said, that Rani Rashmoni’s famous Dakshineshwar Temple was inspired from this temple in Bawali.

Bandel Church is one of the oldest churches in India and is also known as Basilica of the Holy Rosary. The church was built in 1599 to commemorate the settlement of Portuguese in West Bengal. The church is dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. She is also known as Our Lady of the Rosary and that’s why the church got the name.

Bandel town was established by Portuguese and it is situated in the Indian state of West Bengal. The name Bandel means port. The town comes under Hooghly district. Portuguese built a church and a monastery in 1660. There is a Dunlop factory nearby Bandel which is situated at a place called Sahaganj. The town is 40 km away from Howrah railway station and is connected to many places through road and rail transport.

Bandel Church can be visited from 6:00am to 6:00pm. It takes around two to three hours to visit the church as there are many things to visit in and around the church. The church is opened on all days including the public holidays.

Bandel is situated nearby Hooghly river and the best time to visit the place is during winter months. In the rest of the period, the climate is either hot or is hot and humid. The period between 25th December and 10th January are very busy and people may face parking issue. On 25th December the church is closed for the tourists as Christians have to perform many rituals.

History

Bandel Church was constructed in Bandel by the Portuguese after their settlement on the banks of Hooghly river. The first man to arrive from Portugal was Vasco da Gama in 1498. The Portuguese were of the barbaric nature and did business through might and force. In 1535, Portuguese arrived in Bengal and started their trade from Saptagram which was situated on the banks of Saraswati river. In 1575, Mughal emperor Akbar allowed them to settle near Hooghly river. Meanwhile, river Saraswati dried up due to silting so the Portuguese started trading from there new settlement at Hooghly.

Statue of Mother Mary

Statue of Mother Mary sank in the river. One day Father Joan da Cruz heard the voice of Tiago saying that Mother Mary is coming but he neglected it. Next day he found the statue on the bank of the river. The fishermen brought it back and put it on the bank. They celebrated the return of the statue of Mother Mary.

Meanwhile, a Portuguese ship landed at the Bandel port and the captain said that they have faced a storm. The captain also said that he prayed to God that if they survive they will give the ship mast to the first church that they will see. As they have seen the Bandel church first, so they donated the ship mast to the church.

Ship Mast

There was a ship mast which was installed by a captain after his ship was saved from a storm. The ship mast was damaged when a tree feel down on it in 2010 due to a storm. After the storm, renovation has been done and the mast was kept in a glass enclosure.

Hangseswari Temple

Hangseswari temple was constructed in 19th century and is located in Bansberia in Hooghly. The temple has the height of 21m and there are 13 towers inside the temple having a lotus-shaped top. The temple is dedicated Goddess Hangseswari. Ananta Basudeba Temple is within the precincts of the Hangseswari Temple while Swanbhaba Kali Temple is nearby the temple.

Pandua Bari Mosque

Pandua Bari mosque was constructed in 1300AD having the dimensions of 7041m × 12.8m. The mosque has three aisles with 24 doors for entrance. There are 21 doors in front and three on side. Along with it, there are 63 domes on the roof which are situated over brick arches. The arches rest on stone pillars which depicts the influence of Hindu architecture.

Shanderswartala Temple

Shanderswartala Temple is located at the distance of 5km from Chinsura railway station and is considered as the oldest temple. Sideshwar Roy Choudhury constructed the temple on the banks of river Ganga. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva whose ilnga was placed by Digambar Haldar in 16th century.

From Sealdah Station take Hasnabad Local train and get down at Taki Road Station. It is a 2 hour journey. A journey by car to Taki from Kolkata is also enjoyable. If you go by road then the best option is to take the Malancha Highway . To avail the highway take the road opposite to the Science city and near Parama police station which leads through Leather Complex, Bantala. From Science City Taki is about 75km via Ghatakpukur. By road it takes around two hours. If you are visiting from the northern or central part of Kolkata then taking the Taki Road from Barasat Chapadali crossing would be the easient. Cross Berachapa, Trimohini and then you can see Taki.

Another boat ride to the Machranga Island is also a nice thing to be done here. Hire a van rickshaw and visit the Golpatar jungle.
