This visit to the Baker's Hill is part of the City Tour.

The initial information I have gathered prior to our trip to Puerto Princesa, Palawan

was that Baker's Hill is one of the must visit places in Palawan.

Based on the name itself, I was wondering what this place will offer

aside from its cakes and pastries.

Baker's Hill is quite a surprising place!

I really did not expect much about this place, but what we experienced

was something different.

The Baker's Hill 'Hopia' is a must try!

I'm sure people who visited this place and have tried the hopia will agree!

The Baker's Hill sits in a big compound with a sort of disney theme.

You will also see well designed gardens, bonsai plants and several bird cages.

Here's one of the attractions, a nice space for peacocks.

We are lucky enough to witness this male peacock,

dancing around and boasting his pretty tails.

This peacock is trying to win his mate.

Here's a section of the Baker's Hill garden.

There are several of these well designed pocket gardens.

Here's a sculpture on display in one section of the garden.

Here's a Golden Peasant in one of the bird cages.

There are several other bird cages with beautiful birds on display.

Here's a group of beautiful dogs in one of the houses.

They're very cute and lovely.

A visit to the Mitra Ranch is part of the Day Tour.

This picture was taken from the Mitra Ranch, which is overlooking Palawan.

This ranch is owned by the late Senato Ramon Mitra.

We saw a horse grazing in one of section of the Mitra Ranch.

These horses are free to roam within this section of the Mitra Ranch.

Here's another horse that is so playful, she even went near to where we are.

Look at her, she's a beauty!

A visit to the Binuatan Creations is part of the City Tour.

The Binuatan Creations is located in Pajara, Sta. Monica, Puerto Princesa.

This is a handicraft shop where export quality products are weaved.

Here's a glimpse of the Binuatan Creations products.

Their products range from native bags, pouches, table runners, blinds, etc.

Here's a glimpse of the weaving area,

where workers do their magic in creating export quality products.

Here's a sample of a weaving machine.

Looks antique, but still does magic! That's Filipino ingenuity!

This shows how labor intensive weaving is, as each string is weaved patiently into place.

So next time you buy a weaved product... think of the long hours of labor

that these weavers put into each product to make it beautiful and useful!

This is a historical landmark, which is a military camp during the World War II.

This camp is just across the Cathedral.

Now this serves as a park where locals and tourists can spend some time,

Day 2: Ugong Rock (Puerto Princesa, Palawan)

Our destination for the day: Underground River and Ugong Rock.

This will focus on the Ugong Rock experience.

Things to note for this adventure:

This is a side trip on the way to the Underground River.

These are some of the articles posted at the receiving area.

The receiving area is also where everyone will be given an orientation

on what to expect and what this adventure is all about.

Here we are, all dressed up for the Ugong Rock Adventure!

Safety first: Helmet and Gloves!

Helmet to protect your head and Gloves so you won't contaminate the limestones!

And up we go!

You have two options going back, first is via the same route...

while the other one is the zip line.

We decided to use the zip line, which surprisingly
was a very very exciting experience.

This ride charges Php 250.00 per person.
Not bad for a very exciting experience. A must try!

Day 2: Underground River (Puerto Princesa, Palawan)

It is Day 2 at Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Our destination for the day: Underground River and Ugong Rock.

This will focus on the Underground River Tour.

Things to note for this adventure:

You should have already bought your tickets for the Underground River.

The General Admission Fee for Adult is Php 150, while for Minor is Php 100.

We again hired a Van / Tourist Guide for Php 5,400.00.

This is inclusive of the boat and buffet lunch.

This is where we take off going to the Underground River.

We will be riding one of these boats.

This is the other side of the port.

This is part of the Sabang Beach.

This is the entrance going to the Underground River.

Just walk through this trail which will lead you to the Underground River Entrance.

From the river bank, you will ride another boat that will take you inside for the

Underground River Tour.

We are now ready to take the Underground River Tour!

Safety First! Everyone is required to wear a Helmet and Life Vest.

Those sitting in front will be helping with the lights and battery connection.

Don't worry, the Boatman will teach you how to do it.

Day 3: Honda Bay (Puerto Princesa, Palawan)

It is our Day 3 for our Puerto Princesa, Palawan Adventure!

Today, we are going island hopping at the Honda Bay!

We again hired the same van the we are using while

on vacation here at Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

For this particular day and itinerary (Honda Bay Island Hopping),

our expenses are as follows:

Van Rental = Php 1,500.00 (Drop-Off and Pick-Up)

Boat Rental = Php 1,300.00 (Small Boat)

Food = Php 1,250.00 (Packed Lunch good for 6 pax)

Let's now start our Honda Bay Island Hopping!

Go to the terminal to register and pay for the boat ride.

The boat rental covers the entire duration of the Honda Bay Island Hopping.

The BoatMen also double as your Tourist Guide!

This is the Pier or the Docking Station.

You will be given a number when you paid your rented boat.

This is where you wait for your assigned boat.

You just wait here for your boat to dock.

Off we go for our Honda Bay Island Hopping!

Safety first! Everyone will be required to wear a Life Vest Jacket!

In our case, we brought our own Life Vests!

This is the first stop.

This is a snorkeling place.

You see different corals and types fish.

Your Boatman will guide you around the snorkeling area.

This is one of the islands were we stayed.

While in an island, you can snorkel and feed the fish.

You need to buy some bread for feeding.

Your Boatman / Tourist Guide will usually instruct you on what you need.

This is at the Snake Island.

The Snake Island is a long sandbar that slithers on the surface of the sea,

very much like it's namesake.

This is still in the Snake Island.

This is a very good snorkeling site, where we are able to have

a very close encounter with different species of fish.

The fish are already very much accustomed to

having tourists feeding them.

They just mingle with you while you feed them.

In some cases, you are able to touch them

and they even bite some bread off your hands!

Day 4: Dinner at Kalui (Puerto Princesa, Palawan)

This is our fourth day in Puerto Princesa, Palawan!

We went to Kalui Restaurant to have dinner.

We don't know what to expect other than the native ambiance, so, let's go!

Prior to coming over, we requested the Hotel Staff to book us for this dinner a day before.

Since it's Christmas day, we expect Kalui Restaurant to be full of diners,

so the booking for my family will give us an assurance of a reserved table.

We just walked our way to Kalui Restaurant as it is just very near Casa Linda.

Now, let's get started with what we want in the first place... FOOD!

We ordered the 'Kalui Special of the Day' at Php 395 and good for two!

Dinner is served!

This is the appetizer. Fresh sea weeds with a dash of Kalamansi!

Buttered Prawns!

Pinakbet!

The Crispy Lapu-Lapu in Sweet & Sour Sauce!

Dessert is Served! Fresh Mixed Fruits in a young Coconut shell!

as one of Asia's Finest Restaurants in 2011/2012.

Pangasinan Hundred Islands

A visit to the Pangasinan Hundred Island means... more fun... island hopping... swimming... and sight seeing.

Once you reached Aliminos, Pangasinan, proceed to the pier where there's

a parking area to park your car.

You need to register with the local Tourism Agency unit, which handles the

assigning of your Tour Guide, Boat, Safety Gears (Life Vest), Snorkeling Gears, etc. This is also where you pay the corresponding dues/charges.

Tip 1: Depending on what time you arrive, you can take your lunch before riding your boat. Else, just bring your food and go island hopping already.

Tip 2: Bring everything you need, your clothes, food, water, towel, camera, sun block lotion, etc. You can keep it dry inside the boat.

Tip 3: Depending on your budget, you can take the package for the whole day rental of the boat. This way, you can actually leave your things (dry) inside the boat. Just leave valuable items in you car.

Tip 4: You can also opt to be brought back to your selected swimming place (island) and just arrange pick-up time with your Tourist Guide. With this option, I would suggest you go island hopping first, then once you have been to each of the islands, you will have an idea of which island to stay.

How to go to Hundred Island, Pangasinan.

How to go to Hundred Islands, Pangasinan

This 'How to Go to' post, traces the route we took when we had road trip

from San Pedro, Laguna to three (3) destinations in Pangasinan.

First stop was the 'Hundred Islands in Pangasinan,

then Second stop are the 'Pyramids of Asia' and the 'Our Lady of Manaog Church,

then Third and last stop is the 'Blacksmiths of Calasiao''.

This map shows you the entire trip route.

We start from San Pedro, Laguna and drove

all the way to Hundred Islands in Alaminos, Pangasinan.

This 'How to Go to'guide may be a customized route plan from the south,

but I'm sure this guide will still be very useful to my dear readers

from the other parts of the Philippines.

Just pick a starting point along the route taken and start from there.

I'm hoping that this will be useful to your planned trip.

Have a safe trip and enjoy!

This part of the route traces from San Pedro, Laguna

to the North Luzon ExpressWay (NLEX).

The route is very straight forward. Drive along South Luzon ExpressWay (SLEX),

then turn along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA),

then exit at Balintawak, towards NLEX.

Please note that there is also another entry point from EDSA towards NLEX

via Mindanao Avenue. This is a newly opened avenue going to NLEX,

but I'm sorry to say that I have not used this route yet.

I'm hoping that some of my readers will be able to share this route in your comments,

so I can learn from you and we can also help the other readers.

Going back to our road trip...

this section traces the route from NLEX to SCTEX.

Just drive along NLEX and exit at the DAU Toll Plaza.

Drive towards the second Toll Gate from NLEX.

You should see a signage pointing you towards the SCTEX.

This section traces the route from SCTEX going to Tarlac.

Just drive along the route shown in the picture.

Take note of the Petron Gasoline Station where the road will split into two.

Take the LEFT road as this will take you towards the inner section of Tarlac.

This section zooms in the Tarlac section mentioned above.

Drive along J. Luna Street.

The next landmarks after the Petron Gasoline Station,

are the MetroTown Mall and the McDonalds on

the right side of the next intersection.

Cross the intersection and drive all the way

until you reach Ninoy Aquino Boulevard.

Turn LEFT at the Ninoy Aquino Bouleverad,

then turn RIGHT at the Bridge along P. Burgos Street.

This section of the trip traces the route from Tarlac until you reach Alaminos, Pangasinan.

Just drive along this long stretch of national road.

You will see signages pointing you towards the 'Hundred Islands',

so you should not worry that you may get lost.

When you reached Alaminos, Pangasinan, you need to park your car

in the Parking Area first and prepare your things for your island hoping, swimming,

photo shoots, picnic, and whatever other creative activities you can think of.

How to go to Caliraya

This 'How to Guide' traces the route from San Pedro, Laguna all the way to Caliraya, Laguna.

I hope this will give you a better understanding of the route.

Enjoy your trip and be safe!

The above picture shows the entire route.

This trip starts from San Pedro, Laguna via South ExpressWay (SLEX),

then moving towards the National Road of Laguna,

all the way to Pagsanjan, and finally to Caliraya.

There are six (6) major points of reference. I have marked them

accordingly for ease in your navigation.

This picture shows the starting point (point 1),

as well as an option for a good meeting place.

I would suggest to make the Petron Station as a meeting place.

This is where we also met with our cousins.

There is also another starting point of reference, which is the Shell Station.

This though is not shown here as it is before Susana and San Pedro Toll Exits,

but is right after the Alabang Toll Exit.

Either of the points of reference mentioned should be a good start point.

This picture shows the section from the SLEX.

EXIT at the Calamba Exit point (point 2),

then traversing the national highway going towards Los Banos.

Turn right when you reached point 3. The landmark is a big billboard,

when you see this turn RIGHT, but it actually is more of like a U-turn section.

Turn LEFT immediately on the next street.

I have also marked here in pink an alternative route or in case you missed the U-turn,

you can still go back on track.

This section shows the route towards Pagsanjan.

By this point, you have already traveled past Los Banos,

and travelling towards Pagsanjan.

The landmark here is the ark that welcomes visitors to Pagsanjan.

Just drive straight, and when you reached the junction (point 4), turn LEFT.

This section shows you the road splitting into two, take the right road (point 5).

This section shows you a better picture from point 4 up to your destination, CALIRAYA!

Japanese Garden (Caliraya)

This trip was part of our outdoor experience in Caliraya.

The first day was spent at the Surf Camp. We stayed there overnight.

The next day, we went to the Japanese Garden.

The Japanese Garden in Caliraya was built by the Japanese government in 1970s.

This landmark was built to commemorate the Japanese soldiers who died during the World War II.

Now, the Japanese Garden in Caliraya is a known tourist spot in this part of Laguna.

Most of the travel blogs will recommend that you spend some time in this place.

The Japanese Garden in Caliraya is open to the public for a minimal fee.

Here you can enjoy a picnic together with your family and friends.

Or a stroll hand-in-hand with your love one.

CALIRAYA: An Outdoor Experience

Preparing for a weekend getaway is such a big task... you have to consider a lot of things... and ensure that everyone will enjoy... thus, when an opportunity for an outdoor adventutre was presented to us... We immediately confirmed and got started!

We received an invite from our cousin... requesting us to join them for an out of town trip... the destination: Caliraya! The itinerary includes a road trip to Caliraya, over night stay in Surf Camp, and a visit to the Japanese Garden. Sounds good to me and my family!

We packed our bags, food for two days, a tent good for a family of four, cooking utensils, water, flashlights, snacks, medicines, first aid kit, water, cooler and other stuff.

Day 1:

We meet with our cousin at the Petron Station along SLEX. We finalized the route, which exit to take, what stops and things to buy along the way. We then headed for our out-of-town trip!

Surf Camp

Caliraya, Laguna

We left San Pedro, Laguna at around 10am and arrived in Caliraya Surf Camp at around 12 noon... just in time for lunch!

We were assisted by a Surf Camp staff, and we found a nice place where to fix our tents.

Since it is lunch time already, we had lunch first... we brought packed lunch... chicken adobo, salted egg salad. Hmmm! Yummy!

The place was so relaxing! We were overlooking the lake and the breeze is cool and very very relaxing... it was great!

We fixed our tents, which is quite challenging by the way, since the wind is quite strong. Our tent was uprooted on the first spot we choose. Well, this place is called Surf Camp mainly because of its strong wind all year long, which is perfect for wind surfing!

Anyway, we choose another spot. Here's a tip... choose a place where there is a wind break! In our case, we choose a spot behind a big plant (I'm not sure what the name is). You will see this in the pictures I have posted. This plant helped break the strong winds and cover our tent. So there you go!

It was a very relaxing day, away from the noise and stress of the urban life!

We stayed overnight and just enjoyed a very relaxing commune with nature!

This type of tent is ergonomic and designed to sustain strong winds.

This don't need a wind break.

These plants acted as wind break, to keep our tent in it's place.

Surf Camp is widely known for wind surfing because of the

constant strong winds all year long... just perfect for wind surfing!

First Stop, we went straight to the Ocean Adventure. We arrived several minutes before 9:00am. Just enough time to do some stretching after a long drive... enough time to take pictures and buy the tickets... enough time before the gate opens.

A Trip to SUBIC

We decided to go to Subic to spend Christmas Day. I started calling hotels in Subic on the 16th of December, unfortunately, all hotels are fully booked for the holiday season. We went ahead with the trip anyway... well, part of the fun.

We left our place in San Pedro, Laguna at around 6:00am. Traffic in the South Expressway (SLEX) was so light, that I reached Makati City in less than 30 minutes. I stopped by the Caltex-Estrella station and filled-up... full-tank!

We proceed with the trip and just drove along EDSA until we reached Balintawak. Turned right towards the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), then drove all the way until we reached the Dau Toll Exit. From this point, we drive towards the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). The SCTEX is a traffic discipline zone. You have to follow the rules, especially the maximum speed limit and to just use the innermost lane when overtaking. Other than that, please stay in the middle lane and follow speed limit.

How to Go to Pagudpud by Car

There are several ways to get there... and it all depends on your preference...

I will take you there via a road trip to Pagudpud. This is the most exciting and most adventurous way to go.

The point of reference will be from Balintawak exit going to the North Luzon ExpressWay (NLEX). Here you go..

From EDSA north-bound lane, turn right at Balintawak exit going to the North Luzon ExpressWay (NLEX).
Travel along the NLEX stretch and exit at DAU Toll Exit.
From DAU Toll Exit, skip the Angeles Toll, and exit on the second ramp, going towards the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx).
From SCTEx Plaza, exit on the next entrance pointing towards Tarlac / Baguio.
Drive through SCTEx until you reach the end of the expressway which is the Tarlac City Interchange.
Turn left and go straight until you reach the National Road.
Turn right and drive going towards Tarlac City.
Just go straight and keep driving along the National Road.
You should pass by the following Municipality / City:

Cultural Differences Between Asian Countries

A lot of travelers don’t think about the differences between Asian cultures when they travel, especially if they are taking their first trip out of their native lands. While it’s great for travelers to learn about the culture of the Philippines before they visit, they should not assume that all Asian countries share the same culture. The truth is that they often vary greatly, but travelers don’t always consider this when they bounce from country to country during their vacations.

Many travelers who visit the Philippines also decide to spend some time in China while they are in Asia. I always encourage people to check out other countries while they are in Asia, especially if they don’t get to visit the continent very often. A lot of people only get the chance to see Asia once in their lives, so they should make the most out of it and get all of the experiences that they can.

Viking River Cruises offers a Yangtze River trip that will give you the chance to see a large portion of China without spending a lot of time and money traveling throughout the country’s backlands. This is a good option for those that want to see several cities, experience Chinese boat travel, and get an all-inclusive package that take a lot of the guess-work out of traveling in a foreign country.

There are actually two forms of Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), and both are pretty difficult for most people from Western countries, but you only need a few words to get started. Master a few of the basics, and you will receive good treatment on and off the Yangtze River cruise boat.

A Trip to SUBIC

The plan was to stay in Subic overnight... unfortunately when I started contacting the Hotels in the Subic area on 16 December, all of which are already fully booked. The best offer we have was "as walk-in guest", but no guarantee not all! We also have to be there between 8am-10am so we can get the first available slot. Doing so would mean spending a good amount of time which we could already spend exploring Subic. In any case, we still decided to go to Subic to spend Christmas with my family and parents.

Road Trip to PAGUDPUD

This road trip to Pagudpud is not planned at all...

I just got a message from a friend asking where we will be going during the holidays...

Prior to my friends message, we are actually looking to go out of town, but has not finalized where to go... options were to Baguio City... or to Villa Escudero in Quezon.

Baguio City was reported to be experiencing a very cold weather, so we are a bit hesitant since we might not enjoy it much.

On the other hand, we can't contact Villa Escudero for a reservation... so off we agree to join my friend to a road trip to Pagudpud.

This road trip, took us to the beautiful sceneries of Vigan, Laoag, Batac, and Pagudpud.

DAYAW DALAN (02 May 2008 San Jacinto, Masbate)

Dayaw Dalan is part of the San Jacinto Town Fiesta celebration. The event features competing teams. They perform street dancing on selected spots. They go around the town and show their dance numbers. The parade is done a day before the Town Fiesta celebration.

The actual competition is held on the Town Fiesta day. Several Teams compete for the title of Dayaw Dalan Champion.
