Explorers Put Leash On Terriers 70-53

Tyreek Duren led the way with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists as La Salle eased past the Boston University Terriers 70-53. In the absence of Sam Mills who sat out the game with an ankle injury, Duren looked to score early and dropped in eight of the Explorers first ten points as they took a 10-3 lead. Freshman D.J. Peterson put the clamps on Boston's Darryl Partin who came into the game averaging 20.8 points which allowed La Salle to extend their lead to fourteen points by halftime. The Explorers went ahead by 25 points with over eleven minutes to play and the seventeen point margin was the closest that the Terriers would get the rest of the way.

Ramon Galloway (13) and Jerrell Wright (10) also scored in double figures while Wright and Devon White both pulled down 8 rebounds and controlled the paint for La Salle. Boston, who played without starting point guard D.J. Irving (from Philadelphia-area Archbishop Carroll HS), was lead by redshirt freshman Malik Thomas who scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

La Salle Rolls Again In 85-59 Win Over Central Connecticut

The Explorers jumped out to an early double digit lead and never looked back in an 85-59 blowout win over the undermanned Central Connecticut State Blue Devils in New Britain, CT. By halftime, La Salle had an insurmountable 52-22 lead and coasted the rest of the way for the easy victory. Once again, solid defense and torrid three point shooting paved the way to the win.

Jerrell Wright scored a career high 21 points along with 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block to lead the way. Ramon Galloway (15), Sam Mills (12), and Devon White and Tyreek Duren with 10 each also scored in double figures. CCSU was led by freshman guard Kyle Vinales with 18 points. The Blue Devils were forced to play without leading scorer Ken Horton who was out with an ankle injury.

Explorers Lose One, Gain One To Transfer

La Salle University Men's Basketball coach John Giannini announced over the last week the transfer out of and into the program of two student athletes. 7' redshirt freshman center Matt Lopez had decided to leave the progam and enroll at another college for the second semester.

A few days after the Lopez announcement, the Explorers got great news when it was announced that 6'1" combo guard Tyrone Garland would be transferring from Virginia Tech to La Salle. Garland played his high school ball at Philadelphia's John Bartram HS and is the third leading scorer in Philadelphia schoolboy history behind only Maureece Rice and legend Wilt Chamberlain. Garland will have two years of eligibility left at La Salle and will become eligible the day after the end of the 2012 Fall semester.

Explorers Cold Shooting Leads To 70-66 Loss At Delaware

La Salle was only able to connect on 2 of their 16 three point attempts and that was ultimately the difference in a 70-66 loss to the Delaware Blue Hens at the Bob Carpenter Arena in Newark, DE. The Explorers led 33-27 at the break but Delaware eventually grabbed a two point lead with just over twelve minutes remaining. From that point on, the game went back and forth until the Blue Hens took a 65-60 lead with just over three minutes to go on the strength of two jumpers by freshman guard Kyle Anderson. The Explorers came back to trail by one and after forcing a turnover with 30 seconds left, had a chance to take the lead, but Tyreek Duren was unable to convert on a strong drive to the hoop. No foul was called despite obvious contact on the play. Delaware closed it out on the foul line for the win.

Once again, La Salle's balanced effort included five players scoring in double figures, led by Devon White (15), Earl Pettis (12), and Ramon Galloway, Sam Mills, and Jerrell Wright with 11 each. Delaware was led by Khalid Lewis and Devon Saddler with 18 points each.

Ramon Galloway scored a career high 26 points to lead La Salle to a 76-64 win over Army. Galloway was on fire, going 10-12 from the floor and 6-7 from deep, while contributing 7 rebounds and 4 assists. The Explorers took a twelve point lead into halftime and the Cadets were never able to reduce the deficit to single digits in the second half. Army kept the game from becoming a blowout by making 55.6% of their three point attempts.

Galloway was joined in double figures by Earl Pettis (18) and Sam Mills (10). Army was led by Ella Ellis' 19 points and 5-6 shooting from three.

Explorers Romp To 89-51 Road Win Over Towson

La Salle jumped out to a 13-0 lead and never looked back in a 89-51 win at Towson University. Once again, relentless defense and torrid shooting from beyond the arc allowed the Explorers to put the game away early. For the second game in a row, La Salle owned a 20 point halftime lead and maintained that lead for the remainder of the game. The Explorers knocked down 14 three point shots, shooting a blistering 51.9% from long range.

Five players scored in double figures for La Salle, led by Sam Mills (18), Earl Pettis and Ramon Galloway (15 each), Tyreek Duren (12), and Jerrell Wright (11). Towson was led by Robert Nwankwo and Marcus Damas with 12 points each.

La Salle Throttles Bucknell 78-52

Another strong team defensive effort and hot shooting propelled the La Salle Explorers to their sixth straight win at Gola Arena with a 78-52 thrashing of the Bucknell Bison. The Explorers jumped on the Bison early and took a commanding 43-23 lead into the half. They kept the pressure up in the second half, leading by as many as thirty points.

Ramon Galloway once again led the way with 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals. Also scoring in double figures for La Salle were Earl Pettis (18), Devon White (11), and Tyreek Duren (11). Bucknell was led by Joe Willman's 14 points. Willman was the only Bison player to score in double figures as the Explorers big men shut down the opposing team's leading scorer, holding 6'9" Mike Muscala to 2 points.

La Salle Cruises Past Northeastern 68-51

La Salle used stingy defense and hot perimeter shooting to run away from Northeastern by a 68-51 score. The Explorers made 7 of 8 shots from beyond the arc in the second half to help open up a double digit lead with fifteen minutes remaining. Northeastern was never able to get closer than 13 points the rest of the way. The win was La Salle's fifth straight at Tom Gola Arena.

Earl Pettis led the way with 15 points and 7 rebounds while Ramon Galloway (14), Tyreek Duren (13) and Jerrell Wright (11) also scored in double figures for the balanced Explorers. Jonathan Lee scored 11 points for the Huskies but it was Sam Mills' defensive effort on Northeastern's leading scorer Joel Smith (2 points) that helped secure the victory. Smith was averaging almost 18 points per game coming into the contest.

Explorers Rebound With 82-70 Win Over Rider

La Salle broke a two game losing streak to ease past the Rider Broncs 82-70 in the final night of the Philly Hoop Group Classic at the Palestra. The Explorers led throughout the game and broke it open with a 19-3 run midway through the second half and maintained a double digit lead the rest of the way.

Ramon Galloway led four La Salle players in double figures with 21 points along with 8 rebounds and 2 assists. Also in double figures for the Explorers were Devon White (17 points and 7 rebounds), Sam Mills (13) and Earl Pettis (11). Pettis dislocated the middle finger of his left hand late in the first half and did not return. Rider was led by two former Philadelphia Catholic League stars in Monsignor Bonner's Jeff Jones (24) and Neumann-Goretti's Danny Stewart (22).

Cold Shooting Explorers Fall to Robert Morris 51-44

Despite turning in one of their best defensive performances of the season, La Salle dropped a 51-44 decision to the Robert Morris Colonials in a Philly Hoop Group Classic game at the Palestra. The Explorers held the Colonials to 28% from the field but were only able to connect on 3 out of their 22 attempts from beyond the arc and shot only 31.9% from the floor themselves.

Sam Mills was the only Explorer in double figures with 15 points. Ramon Galloway added 8 points in his first game back after missing the last three due to a concussion he suffered during the season opening win against Lafayette. Robert Morris was led by former North Catholic star Velton Jones' 14 points and former Chester (PA) HS standout Russell Johnson's 12.

Explorers Fall to #17 Pitt 73-69

# 17 ranked Pitt held off a late La Salle comeback to beat the Explorers 73-69. La Salle took their last lead of the game at 53-52 on a Steve Zack foul shot with just under eight minutes to play, but the Panthers went on a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to seemingly put the game away. But the pesky Explorers chipped away at the lead and had a chance to tie the game after a Tyreek Duren steal with nine seconds to play. Sam Mills decided to go for the quick two but his layup attempt was blocked by Travon Woodall which sealed the Pitt victory.

Earl Pettis led La Salle with 22 points while Devon White and Sam Mills chipped in with 12 each. Pitt had four players in double figures, led by former Chester (PA) HS standout Nasir Robinson's 17 points.

Four players scored in double figures for La Salle, led by Tyreek Duren's 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists, along with freshman Jerrell's Wright's first career double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds, 1 block)

JMU was led by A.J. Davis with 21 points and Andrey Semenov with 18.

Villanova Steals 76-69 Overtime Win Over La Salle

Aided by a 41-11 advantage on the foul line, Villanova overcame a 5 point deficit with 1:22 left in regulation to defeat the Explorers 76-69 in overtime. A steal and the resulting layup by freshman Darrun Hilliard that tied the game with just under a minute left pushed the momentum in Villanova's way and they pulled away in overtime.

Villanova was led by Maalik Wayns' 22 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists while La Salle was led by their sophomore backcourt of Tyreek Duren (24 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals) and Sam Mills (19 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists)

Explorers Cage Leopards In Home Opener 79-53

La Salle followed up a strong exhibition showing against Carleton University with a 79-53 blowout of Lafayette. The Explorers jumped out of the gate to a 13-2 lead and never looked back. Once again, sophomore point guard Tyreek Duren led the way with 17 points along with 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Also scoring in double figures were Earl Pettis (16), Taylor Dunn (12) and Sam Mills (10). Devon White just missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds while freshmen D.J. Peterson (7 rebounds) and Jerrell Wright (6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks) also played a large part in the blowout win.

The Explorers once again played outstanding defense, forcing the Leopards to shoot 36% from the field and limiting them to only 3 field goals from three point range.

South Carolina transfer Ramon Galloway played well in limited minutes before going down with a concussion shortly before the end of the first half. Ramon will miss Tuesday night's game against Big 5 rival Villanova and his status for the Homecoming game against James Madison is still unknown.

Tyreek Duren and Devon White led the way with 14 points each while four other players also scored in double figures for the Explorers. Carleton was held to seven field goals in the second half while shooting 33.3% overall and drawing a blank from beyond the arc.

Dr. John Giannini landed his first 2012 recruit with the verbal commitment of 6'9", 270 lb PF/C Jermaine Davis from Garfield Heights (OH) HS. Davis picked La Salle over Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, and Cleveland State. Davis' commitment leaves La Salle with two open scholarships for the 2012 recruiting class.

The Explorers defeated reigning Canadian National Champion Carleton University twice (one exhibition and one closed scrimmage) and the University of Ottawa once, while falling to a Carleton University Alumni All-Star team for their lone loss.
