MAPLEWOOD, NJ, February 2, 2012– Express Yourself Studios located at 1877 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood, NJ has several events slated for Black History Month. The community is invited to take part in one or more of the Studio’s events which are kid and family-friendly and include the following:

Saturday, February 4, 11, 18, 25 – African American Artists Series
Times: 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Every Saturday during the month of February enjoy a special Black History Month lesson in art exploring a different African-American Master Artists (Alma Woodsey Thomas, Romare Bearden, Varnette P. Honeywood, David C.Driskell). This program is offered as part of Express Yourself’s Studio Saturday offering and is open to children ages 5-12.

Thursday, February 23 – African Mask Workshop
Time: 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

As part of the Studio’s Pizza & Pottery Workshop, children ages 5-12 will participate in a fun sculpture project creating an African Clay Pot that they will embellish with paint.

Mardi Gras Art Party & Mask Making Workshop, Feb. 18 @ Express Yourself Studios

Express Yourself Studios; located at 1877 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood will host a Winter Break Art Workshop February 17-24, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm for children age 5-12. Participants will create paintings using a mix of mediums (acrylics, watercolor, and pastels) and other projects using a myriad of materials (clay & paper collages). We’ll be inspired by artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Paul Cezanne, Georgia O’Keeffe and many others. All materials are included, 3-hours of studio time. Express Yourself Studios will host its 4th annual Martin Luther King Jr. "Explore the Dream Through Art" Workshop.

Learn about Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement through art. Children between the ages of 4-12 are welcome to participate in an art project exploring the themes of Peace, Equality and Friendship. All participants are asked to bring a canned or boxed non-perishable food item to be donated to the Wallace Chapel Food Pantry (a service of Wallace Chapel Church) in Summit, NJ.

Express Yourself Studios is Relocating Its Business

MAPLEWOOD, NJ, December 14, 2011 – Express Yourself Studios is relocating its business. Currently housed at 1912 Springfield Avenue, the Studio’s new home beginning January 9, 2012 will be 1877 Springfield Avenue, Maplewood, New Jersey. The studio which offers art classes for adults and children will continue its vast class offering and seasonal workshops such as Kid’s classes: Crafty Toddlers, Media Mix, Drawing & Painting, Sculpture and Cartoon Workshops. Teen classes include Art4ReAL every 2nd Friday and drop-in studio sessions.

The Studio also hosts birthday parties and a myriad of art events and special workshops throughout the year such as Cocktails & Canvas and Coffee & Canvas Workshops for adults and Painting-N-Pajamas and Pizza & Pottery for toddlers and children.

Owned by husband and wife team Rodney Brown and Simone Anthony-Brown the Studio has been a fixture in the Township of Maplewood since October 2008. “This is our first business, we’ve enjoyed the community, so when we found ourselves needing additional space, we knew we absolutely wanted to remain in Maplewood and on Springfield Avenue,” says Anthony-Brown.

The new location will enable Express Yourself Studios to provide its patrons with a separate birthday party room, additional workshop offerings for families, older children and teens, a completely handicap accessible space, and a larger restroom facility complete with a changing table.

“We’re pretty excited about the move, and invite everyone to celebrate with us at our Grand Re-Opening,” says Rodney Brown. The Grand Re-Opening is slated for Saturday, January 21 at 1:00pm and includes giveaways, refreshments and entertainment.

“Food as Art” Project – Express Yourself Studios & Whole Foods Market (West Orange) Tuesday, December 13 Paint “Cupcakes”

“Food as Art,” be inspired by the wonderful colors and textures of desserts let them be your muse as you create a still-life "dessert" painting with artist Simone Anthony-Brown of Express Yourself Studios. Participants will create an 11” x 14” acrylic painting on watercolor paper. Ms. Anthony-Brown will instruct the students beginning with a light sketch of the subject then adding layers of color with acrylic paint utilizing sponge and bristle brushes until the image is complete. NJEA Convention Days Art Workshop at Express Yourself Studios November 10 - 11

Express Yourself Studios, located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood will offer a two-day art workshop during the NJEA Teacher Convention Day school closures on November 10 and November 11 from 9:00am - 12:00pm. Children ages 5-12 are welcome to join Express Yourself Studios for three hours of fun arts & crafts!

Join Express Yourself Studios located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood every 1st Friday of the month, 6:00pm-7:00pm for Painting-N-Pajamas. Children ages 2-5 are invited to wear their PJs and participate in a fun and creative art project and enjoy pizza & beverages. A different project each month (painting, pottery, collage & more).

Express Yourself Studios, located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood offers a Cartoon workshop Thursday evenings 4:30pm - 5:30pm for children ages 8-12. The workshop begins Thursday, October 14, rolling admissions are accepted thereafter.

Young artists will learn the fundamentals of cartooning and graphic story-telling, along with its earliest beginnings and influence upon the art world at large; while working towards the creation of your own comic strip.

Join Express Yourself Studios located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood for its annual Pumpkin Painting, Saturday, October 29 from 11:00am - 3:00pm. Pumpkins and treats provided (while supplies last). Children of all ages are welcome to paint pumpkins, participate in face painting and enjoy treats. A participation fee of $10 is required.
