For this week's blog post I will share the story of one of our female African American heroes, Harriet Tubman, the eponymous inspiration behind our "We Out" shirt design. Her's is a truly remarkable life journey, an inspiration for the ages, and a reminder of what powerful energies the symbols that we adorn our apparel with can contain.

Born a slave

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery, one of nine children, in the early 1820s in Maryland. At this time the United States was still divided into slave states and free states. Maryland was a slave state. Her childhood was an unhappy one. She was separated from three of her siblings, who were sold to other slave owners; she was beaten and whipped, leaving her with physical scars for life; she was uneducated, and made to work unreasonable hours in unsafe work environments, leading to her once contracting measles; she began having seizures and fits of unconsciousness following a particularly vicious blow she received to her head. But her faith in God was strong. She experienced in her suffering dreams and visions, which she believed to be from God, providing her with solace and resolve.

Escape from slavery

She married John Tubman, a free black man, in about 1844, and, probably on her wedding night, conceived a plan to escape from slavery. By 1849 Harriet  was desperate. Often ill, she was afraid that her master would sell her, separating her from her family. Then, one night in 1849, she declared WE OUT. Guided by the North Star, she made her escape on foot. She managed to make her way to the Underground Railroad, a secret network of routes and safe houses used by African American slaves to flee to free states and Canada. She would travel by night, and hide from slave catchers during the day. There were large rewards on offer for capturing escaped slaves. She had to be quick on her feet. She would do things like start sweeping someone's yard to trick bounty hunters into thinking she worked for there. And so she went, from safe house to safe house, through Caroline County, then Delaware and finally into Pennsylvania, a free state.

"Moses"

This wasn't the end of Harriet Tubman's journey. In fact it was only the beginning. She could not enjoy her freedom while her people suffered in slavery. She went back for her friends and family, proceeding to become part of the Underground Railroad, working with Frederick Douglass, and, over the next ten years, helping rescue over 300 slaves from the South. She made multiple trips back to Maryland, rescuing her children, niece and brother among many others. She never lost a single passenger, and was dubbed "Moses" for her efforts in freeing her people from bondage.

I’m glad we made this T shirt to honor her. Every time I see it, I am reminded of her powerful story, reminded that even in the darkest of times, there remain people with the courage and the capacity to do good, even at a personal cost to themselves. If you’re reading from up there, thank you Harriet Tubman. You will forever be an inspiration.

Pride is a powerful symbol of acceptance and social progress, and it is quickly becoming one of the most important modern day festivities for the community as a whole! From London or Paris to New York and LA, the whole world is embracing the spirit of Pride.

Contrary to what some ignorant individuals would have you believe, not all feminists burn their bras, have hairy armpits, and despise men in the process. In actual fact, the vast majority of feminists out there are respectful, honest, kind, and caring individuals, who are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. Since women’s suffrage, feminism has come on leaps and bounds, yet despite this, people still do not necessarily understand what it truly means to be a feminist and to stand up for what is right in the world. If the recent women’s march is anything to go by, the future is female, or at least, things may certainly be heading that way, and that is certainly not a bad thing. To help put these negative stereotypes to bed once and for all, here’s a look at 4 things you probably didn’t know about feminism, yet definitely should.

Feminists do not hate all men – One common negative stereotype associated with feminism, is that they all despise men, and accuse every man out there to be a potential rapist. This however, is not the case at all. Feminists love men, just as they love women. Providing the men in question are respectful, they get the same treatment in return. The reason why people believe that feminists hate men is because feminists campaign for equal rights, as they wanted to be treated equally to men, rather than as inferior - and what is wrong with that?

Feminists want and deserve equal rights – As previously touched upon, feminists want equal rights, as they deserve to be treated exactly the same as men, rather than be judged based upon their gender. Feminists do not believe they are better than men, just as they don’t believe that men are better than women, or that women are better than men. Feminism is all about equality, meaning that men and women alike should be allowed access to the same things, they should receive equal amounts of pay, and women should be able to do the same things as men, and vice versa, without being judged.

Feminists want and deserve to be respected – Respect is something that we all deserve in life, and feminists are no different. A feminist woman, or a man for that matter, should be perfectly able to go out and wear whatever they like in public, without being judged, mocked, or objectified. If a woman wears a low cut top, or short shorts, then that is up to her. She does not want, nor deserve, to be cat called and objectified by other people – male or female. A woman should be allowed to dress however she likes, without having men make lewd comments, or silently judging her. If she feels happy with what she is wearing, then what is the problem? The answer is that there is no problem, as that is her right, and her rights should be respected.

Feminism comes in a variety of forms – Finally, before wrapping things up, the last thing you need to know about feminism is that it comes in a variety of different forms. Not all feminists are white women, as feminism has no specifications in terms of class, gender, race, age, or anything else. Anybody can be a feminist, and rightfully so. With more and more women becoming empowered, in an ideal world, the future is female.

It is not right to underestimate the power of women, because they are many, they are determined, they know what they want, and will definitely join forces if they want something done. Women are a very important part of our society, not only because they are mothers and wives, but also because they work just as much and as hard as men, being in many cases more successful than them. A women will always be more motivated, ambitious, tenacious, and will pay attention to details, which makes her a real asset in any company. In fact, women were not afraid to enter domains that were considered to be dominated by men. So, it is not uncommon to see women that are truck drivers, mechanics, carpenters, and so on. Women are not afraid of work, but they won’t accept to be disrespected either.

To be a feminist doesn’t necessarily mean to hate men or be in a constant competition with men. It means to be ready to stand up from the rights of women, for your rights. Even if we claim to live in a modern and highly advanced society, women are still not treated right in many parts of the country and of the world, business owners and others being sexists and favoring men in the detriment of women. Feminism is the movement that demands respect for women and wants for their rights to be taken in account at all times. It is utterly disrespectful to mistreat and not show any appreciation to women that aren’t just productive citizens of their community by doing their job right, but also by being careful mothers and wives, doing their job at home as well.

If you want to have a clear image over the determination of women, let us remember about the womens march that happened in Washington DC a little while ago. This happened as a reaction to the fact that Donald Trump became, officially, the President of the United States. It is well-known the fact that Trump made, in numerous occasions, inadequate remarks about women. Not to mention the many sexual assault allegations Donald Trump got during the elections, after several women decided to talk about how Trump treated them. Also, it was impossible not to notice the solidarity among women worldwide. Even if the march took place in the United States, women from across the world gathered as well, to support and show their solidarity in the same cause, in many important cities around the globe.

If you don’t think the future is female, then think again. Women showed, in time, that they have what it takes to be powerful and successful. Let us not forget that one of the most supported candidates for the presidential elections and Trump’s number one competitor was a woman, Hillary Clinton. This shows clearly that women are determined to get where they want, because they are smart and more calculated than many men. So, it won’t be a surprise if we will see a rise in power among women in the future, because they will definitely not leave things undone.

False Eye Lashes seem to be the hottest trend, and we're not just talking about falsies that extend your natural eye lashes. There are so many creative looks you can make, that allow you to strut your stuff with something as unique as you are. From big colorful feathers, to spooky Halloween Scene Eyelashes, you are sure to find something you can use to dress up your eyes.

1. Complete your makeup, but save your eyeliner and mascara until after your false lashes are on. The lashes will adhere better to 'naked' lashes rather than lashes with mascara already applied

2. Carefully peel the lashes from the packet - be careful to not get the left and right sides mixed up, as each one is shaped according to each eye. Usually the outer end of the lash for the outer corners of the eye is longer in length. They will be slightly tacky on the "string" of them already. To set them into a curled shape and make them easier to apply, try holding them around a makeup brush for a minute or so to set in the curled shape.

3. Hold the false eyelashes up to your own to make sure they fit. If they are too long, you can trim off the outer ends of the lash to fit your eye.

4. You can squeeze your glue directly onto the string of the lash, but try not to create a mess. A better method may be to squeeze some glue onto the back of your hand and try running the string through it, making sure that there is enough glue on each end. Yu will need to wait about 15-20 seconds for the glue to become a little tacky before you apply your lashes

5. Line up the centre of the false lash with the centre of your own lash, as you gently rest the string of the fake lash against your own lash bed. You will want the string of the flase lash to sit naturally with your own eyelash line. You will need to hold the ends down onto the corners of the eye for 5-10 seconds until they are in place.Avoid too much movement or blinking while you let them dry.

6. Finish the look with your eyeliner along the lash bed, and use the mascara to allow your natural eyelashes to mesh in with your falsies beautifully.

•  Keep the Rest Simple

When you are trying to wear your holiday sweater during a normal day, you need to keep the rest of your outfit simple. Jeans, plain leggings, or a skirt, with simple boot or shoes, is all you need to have a complete look. If you add more color on top of what is in the sweater, the odder your outfit looks.  If you are trying to look like you are the embodiment of the holiday, then go for it. If not, stay on the simple side.

•  Ugly Christmas Sweaters Do Not Need Accessories

When you are wearing an ugly Christmas sweatshirt, adding a lot or large accessories will kill the whole outfit. The point is to show off your Xmas sweater, and accessories can quickly overshadow the wonder that is the outfit.

The main thing that you need to pull off an ugly Christmas sweatshirt is to have confidence. Let’s face it.  This is a pop culture phenomenon where geek and normie collide.  Who doesn’t love this show?
