n the over 130-year-history of Holland America Line, there are many traditions and practices. When the ms Zuiderdam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Noordam entered service they carried on the storied tradition of naming passenger ships with the "dam" suffix. Coupled with the "dam" ending has been a famous river, mountain, sea, city or town and often directional bearings.

Holland America ship names also draw from the historic log of ship names, allowing the company to bridge its past with its future growth. The Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam, and Noordam respectively named for the south, east, west, and north points of the compass are no exceptions.

As was learned during the naming ceremony on Sunday, Stein Kruse announced that all guests and crew currently onboard Nieuw Amsterdam (and yes, those that join on July 7 for the more "proper" inaugural sailing as well... July 4 was labeled as a pre-inaugural) will all be able to bless the bell of Nieuw Amsterdam and sign their names on one of two massive boards that will later be turned into glass pieces and permanently added to the ship's art collection.

Here is just a small peek at what the ceremony (and the extremely sturdy looking 'temporary bridge' over the lido pool) as well as the signature boards look like.

First Impressions

Holland America may have bucked tradition when it picked a non-Dutch term for the name of its last ship, Eurodam, but with Nieuw Amsterdam, it's back to its roots in a big way. The line's newest ship, a nearly identical sibling to Eurodam and the second in the Signature class, is the fourth in the company's history to carry the name.

The ship’s design is centered thematically on Manhattan’s wonders -- a perfect fit when you consider that the Netherlands and the "Big Apple" have a long relationship. The city was originally named Nieuw Amsterdam by the Dutch and, oddly enough, in the great port city of Rotterdam there are two major hotels that have New York in their names.
