[Album of the Week] Le Butcherettes - Sin Sin Sin

For someone who wants to be Allison Mosshart...

[Album of the Week] Le Butcherettes - Sin Sin Sin

For someone who wants to be Allison Mosshart when she “grows up” and spent her childhood idolizing Hole, Bikini Kill and Iggy and The Stooges (who this band opened for on tour) it was no surprise that I would fall hard for Le Butcherettes. Some bands grow on you. This one was like finding a long lost friend. I still play air guitar every time I hear “New York.” Drenched in seductive rock energy that track could have been written by Miss Mosshart herself.

Like early 90’s Courtney Love known for her Dr. Martens and babydoll dresses, ferocious leading lady Teresa “Gender Bender” Suarez ironically wears a house wife like dress often times tying a bloody butchers apron around her neck and waist. The attire acknowledges and protests the housewife, chores and the oppressed female type while the blood, represents the rebellion against it. Suarez has said that “Right now in Guadalajara, it’s going downhill. There’s drug wars going on, a lot of rapes, a lot of kidnappings, especially with young women. I want to represent a lot of that with the elements that I take on stage.”

Much like Bikini Kill, Le Butcherettes Sin Sin Sin has something to say especially when it comes to feminism and political oppression. “Dress Off” is a throw back to Suarez’s youth when she was petitioning her catholic school to let the girls wear pants instead of the classic school girl outfit (she ended up going to school naked in protest). “I’m Getting Sick Of You” is full of anger and frustration directed at third-world bureaucracies treatment of the working class man and woman.

Having an artist like Omar Rodriguez Lopez of The Mars Volta championing, producing and playing in the band has definitely given them a leg up, but the music speaks for its self. There’s no way it would have ever gone ignored. Le Butcherettes are playing both weekends at Coachella so if you’re going make sure you to catch their set. From what I’ve heard it’s madness. For now head over to Explore and press play on Sin Sin Sin.

New York
Dress Off
I’m Getting Sick Of You

Site of the Day: Lucky Numbers Music

Site of the Day: Lucky Numbers Music:
Lucky Number Music was formed in 2005 by long-term friends and music industry cohorts Stephen Richards and Michael Morley who met whilst both working at Zomba Records.
Yesterday, PORTALS, a new music blogging and art collaborative launched with the help of thirteen very special music bloggers. Out of those thirteen, ten have been huge supporters of exfm from the very start. They have continued to support exfm by creating a PORTALS exfm account and placing our Site Player on their site.

We are beyond excited for them and we can’t wait to see how this new project unfolds!

Site of the Day: The Black Tambourines

Site of the Day: The Black Tambourines :
A garage rock band from Cornwall, UK laced with little hints of lo-fi surf-pop.

Fill Your Player

Fill Your Player:
Today is the day to fill your player with tons of indie rock and dream pop.

RELATIVE PITCH: Sunday ViewingBen Lear live. For me, I’m particularly curious to see how music will affect her. I try to have it on as much as possible. I’m curious what will stick if anything.

It got me thinking… What’s your earliest memory of music?

For me: Church hymns. I used to love to sit the front row and belt them out. Maybe that’s corny, but that’s what I remember.

Site of the Day: Clumsy & Shy

Site of the Day: Clumsy & Shy :
There are so many good tunes on this site you could literally press play and listen all weekend long. [Album of the Week] Capybara - Dave Drusky

When a band names themselves after the largest living...

[Album of the Week] Capybara - Dave Drusky

When a band names themselves after the largest living rodent on Earth it’s an irresistible talking point. From then on not an interview will pass where a journalist doesn’t inquire about the decision. No discussion will be had with out a mention of it. It’s either genius or pure insanity. As a writer it’s not something you can let slide so I’ll just get that out of the way right now. Luckily, their music is nothing like the loud squeaking noises made by their namesake.

Instead of loud squeaking noises you’ll find tracks full of sunny tropical harmonies, backed by simple driving guitar in full on reverb mode. It’s clear that everyone in this group knows how to play the part. Each song sounds organic yet seamless. Maybe that’s what happens when a group of life long friends gives it a second go and decides to record that album that they’ve always talked about making.

“Neighbor Crimes” the first single off Dave Drusky is bursting with colorful harmonies. As the composition builds and the guitar strikes you find yourself being brought to new heights along with the track. “Wild” slows it down with three chords played slowly in a repetitive manner reverb crying out, less colorful, but just as melodic. The level of sincerity skyrocketing.

Capybara’s attempt at an authentic Sophomore release has paid off. They’ve taken their lush creative process to a whole new level and come out the other end with “Dave Drusky” an album that embraces you with open arms. It’s like waking up to a sunny spring day with every listen. Stream the full album here before it’s official release on February 7th and don’t forget to preorder from insound!

Neighbor Crimes
Wild
Late Night Bikes

Relative Pitch: Hey Hey, My My

So Neil Young shoots out some theories at D:Dive Into Media and the musical landscape goes all-a-flutter.

Let’s get a few things straight:

1. Neil is awesome. A rock God.
2. He’s also one person’s opinion.
3. He’s also old and has already made a ton of money selling music.

Now everyone is entitled to their opinion. Especially someone as revered as Neil. But, let’s just relax and not get all carried away is all. I’ll leave it up to the pundits to tackle all the points of Neil’s interview, but the one area that mosts interests me, or more aptly where I strongly disagree with him is the sound quality debate.

It’s tired. Technology won. Get over your vinyl-loving self.

Bear in mind I’m someone who is perfectly happy with 128K mp3s. In other words, I’m no audiophile. The thing is, neither are 99% of music listeners. I can see why someone of Neil’s musical stature would be bothered by sound quality. He’s poured a lot of time and sweat into a recording. The listener? They don’t care so much. They want ease. They want access. They want portability. And the market gets what the market wants.

About six years ago I ditched all my CDs. Ripped them to iTunes and never looked back. And in the last year I’ve even ditched that. I’m 99% streaming (I’d be 100% if the NYC subways had wifi). Do I lose quality in the process. Yup. I do. Do I mind? Not one bit. I’d argue the vast majority of music listeners would agree. And that’s the main takeaway. Artists and purists can opine for higher quality recordings all day long, but if an audience doesn’t care and more importantly won’t pay for higher quality why push for it? You’re just going to get frustrated in the process. Instead of sitting back, pressing play and enjoying a plethora of great music.
