LIVE CAR CRASH behind WFLA TV News Reporter
Car, cab collide during News Channel 8 live shot.

There's no telling what can happen on live TV.
Reporters doing live broadcasts from the field have always had to keep a cautious eye on their surroundings, but usually all they deal with is a prankster in the crowd trying to get on camera.
This morning, a crew from News Channel 8 inadvertently caught breaking news on camera during a live shot.
Adrienne Pedersen was reporting on gas prices at the intersection of West Kennedy Boulevard and South Howard Avenue when a taxicab and a compact car crashed behind her.
The taxicab, which was traveling north on Howard, appeared to enter the intersection at the same time as the compact car, which was traveling west on Kennedy.
The cab struck the compact car on the driver's door.
Both cars spun out and headed toward the reporter and cameraman.
"The cab was moving so fast that it threw both vehicles through the intersection and onto the curb," said News Channel 8 cameraman Rugene Moore. "The cab was literally spinning out towards us. Luckily a soft patch of dirt in a planter stopped them."
Though the sound of the impact was loud, Pedersen barely flinched and continued through her live broadcast before turning around.
"I heard it, but I had no idea what it was," Pedersen said. "I really just wanted to get off the air so we could run over and make sure they were OK."
The driver of the compact car was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

I also like cars, especially from the 60's & 70's, especially with a V8 and extra especially when they are in good, original condition.
This video was taken in Kurume City, Kyushu island, Japan.
I first came upon this place in the new year, and it had been on my mind that I should make the trip back to shoot a video.
Suffice to say I did.

Tampa Street Racing Honda Crash Turns Critical
A possible street race gone wrong was captured on video and posted to YouTube.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident happened at 2:51 a.m. Sunday.
On the video, posted by Jonathan Valencia, two cars can be seen side by side on Gandy Boulevard in Pinellas County.
Valencia says suddenly a third car came over the bridge, rear-ending one of the stopped cars, and then flipping over.
"I can't even describe it," he said. "It was just crazy. When I was filming, you can see me drop the camera because all the metal, glass, plastic, everything just flew everywhere. It was like a bomb went off."
It appears no one was badly hurt. According to FHP, both drivers fled on foot.
The road was blocked for several hours.
Troopers are still investigating the crash.
Witnesses are asked to call 813-631-4020.

Although avoiding driving usually isn’t an option, consumers should be aware that some toxic chemicals do lurk in car interiors, parts and exhaust. By knowing what these toxins are and where they are found, car owners can minimize their exposure. Phthalates Car buyers prize that new-car smell, but contributing to the odor are toxic chemicals called phthalates. Phthalates are used to soften vinyl components in car interiors and have been linked to liver and kidney damage, as well as reproductive and respiratory problems. Several automakers have discontinued the use of phthalates, but older models still contain them. Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) PBDEs are flame-retardants used on fiber, electronics and plastic in automotive interiors. When PBDEs are exposed to high temperatures and ultraviolet rays, they aerosolize and release into the air. Lab rats exposed to PBDEs develop learning and memory problems, so some states have banned the chemicals. Bromine Brominated flame retardants have been implicated in thyroid, fertility, behavioral, learning and memory problems. Lead Lead is an additive in some car plastics and is associated with learning, behavioral and memory problems, especially in children. Carbon monoxide Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless and highly toxic gas released in car exhaust. When large portions of carbon monoxide are inhaled, oxygen cannot reach the body’s tissues. Carbon monoxide poisoning can result in death if the victim doesn’t get fresh air quickly. Chronic exposure to carbon monoxide can also cause problems in a developing fetus. Hydrocarbons Hydrocarbons are found in car exhaust. If fuel isn’t completely combusted, it evaporates and is released through the exhaust pipe. Those who breath hydrocarbons may develop throat, lung and eye irritation. Chronic exposure may also contribute to cancer. Nitrogen oxide Car engines get extremely hot. This heat can cause nitrogen and oxygen to chemically combine to form nitrogen-oxide gas, a component of car exhaust. Nitrogen oxide can irritate eyes and lungs. Particulates of carbon, fuel additives and soot Carbon, fuel additives and soot particulates can sometimes be emitted from the exhaust pipe. Diesel engines are most likely to have this problem. These solid particulates can trigger an asthma attack in susceptible people. Asbestos Despite widespread bans on materials containing asbestos, many brake pads still contain the substance. People who restore classic cars are especially prone to asbestos exposure. In addition to brake pads, some older car parts that may contain asbestos are hood liners, the clutch assembly, valve rings, gaskets and valve stem packing. Studies have shown a clear association between asbestos exposure and lung cancer. Asbestos exposure can also cause mesothelioma, a rare cancer that develops in the lining of the body’s internal organs.

David Dopp wins Lamborghini, crashes it hours later while on joy ride

SANTAQUIN, Utah - A Utah man who won a $380,000 Lamborghini in a convenience store chain's contest says he crashed the sports car six hours after he got it.

KSL-TV reports the lime green Murcielago Roadster will head to a Las Vegas body shop Wednesday for repairs, days after David Dopp won it from Maverik stores' "Joe Schmo to Lambo" contest.
Dopp says he was taking friends and family on joy rides Saturday when the vehicle hit ice or gravel and started spinning. The car hit some fence posts and came to rest in a field.
The Lamborghini has front-end damage, a punctured wheel and scratches along the passenger side.

Dopp wasn't injured in the crash and says the vehicle is insured.

MTV-reality and action sports-star Rob Dyrdek successfully performed a kick flip in the all-new 2012 Chevrolet Sonic on Saturday.

A kick flip -- a 360-degree rotation in mid-air -- is a common stunt on a skateboard. Not so much in a vehicle. But Dyrdek, host of MTV's Fantasy Factory and Ridiculousness, and the Chevy Sonic are up for trying 'firsts.'

"A kick flip with a Chevy Sonic was a no-brainer," said Dyrdek. "I am a Chevy guy from my '69 Camaro to the Tahoe I drive every day. The Sonic's power and sportiness made it the perfect vehicle for this awesome stunt."

Dyrdek performed the stunt before spectators at Six Flags Magic Mountain, while MTV filmed the feat for the Season 5 premiere of Fantasy Factory. Dyrdek executed the kick flip over the world's-largest skateboard that he created for a previous stunt.

Mark a quick thinking mechanic at the Mobile 1 Express Lube directly in front of Walmart next to McDonalds on the after noon of 12/17/2011 grabbed his fire extinguisher and drove over to put out the car fire just in time to avoid what could have been a large fuel tank explosion. Mark was fast enough to put the fire out before the fire rescue arrived onto the scene. Driving an 806-horsepower Koenigsegg CCX during a New York winter poses a few problems, not the least of which is this: cold tires equal a crash-o-matic lack of grip. Maybe that's what happened to this guy on Long Island. Wait, there's a Koenigsegg CCX in New York?

Word of the crash hit the forum Luxury4Play last night, after Newsday first reported the accident, which happened near the intersection of Berry Hill Road and Rodeo Drive in Syosset, New York this past Saturday.

Armchair forensics experts will point to the likelihood of cold tires and the misapplication of the car's 678 lb-ft of torque in determining the accident's cause. Luckily, no one was hurt, except for the direct hit in the wallet of whoever holds the insurance policy. Maybe an increase of a few grand a year won't matter to the likely well-heeled owner. But needless to say, this will require more than buffing to put back in shape. Multiple tens of thousands in body work, for openers.

Was it a simple case of driving while rich, or an unavoidable freak accident? The smart money is on dumb money.

Now here’s a ’55 Chevy that would silence the “more power!” screams of Tim Taylor from House Improvement. This ’55 Chevy isn’t lacking any power at all! Somehow Australian Rod Hadfield shoved a 1650 cubic inch supercharged Rolls-Royce V12 Merlin Engine making 3,000 horsepower into a ’55! The story of the car is incredible! It took a fabricator 5 years to build the frame of this car alone! It also took another nine months of painting. The V12 Merlin is not your typical engine (obviously). Now airplane engines aren’t our expertise, but trusty wikipedia describes the v12 merlin as “Considered a British icon, the Merlin was one of the most successful aircraft engines of the World War II era, and many variants were built by Rolls-Royce in Derby, Crewe and Glasgow, as well as by Ford of Britain in Trafford Park, near Manchester. The Packard V-1650 was a version of the Merlin built in the United States. Production ceased in 1950 after a total of almost 150,000 engines had been delivered, the later variants being used for airliners and military transport aircraft.” The video showcases just how difficult it is to even start this engine, it is literally just like starting a plane’s engine. The engine is so huge just look at how far back the driver has to sit. He’s practically became a literal backseat driver. According to the video, the cost of this car is well over $1,000,000. We have to tip our hat to Hadfield, the engineering that went into this ride is impressive and deserving in its own right. But what do you think of this ’55? Is this a travesty to the Chevy name? Fatal Ferrari Crash Driver Had Two DUIs Posted by Brianna Sacks on Sep 23, 2011 - 9:08:08 PM PACIFIC PALISADES—A fatal Ferrari crash closed Pacific Coast Highway completely on September 18, ejecting both passengers 30 feet down a cliff. Vladimir Skortsov, 24, of Upland, was driving with passenger Basil Max Price III, 23, in the early hours of the morning down PCH before losing control around a curve and crashing into a power pole.

Skortsov veered off the road and crashed into the pole near Gladstone’s Malibu at 1:27 a.m. The Ferrari hit the power pole on its way over the cliff. The impact split the car in half, "with the two pieces flying 30 feet down a cliff and onto the beach, landing about 60 feet apart" near the 17300 block of PCH, confirmed LAPD officer Heredia. Price was ejected out of the car and landed on the beach. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene. Skortsov was also ejected from the vehicle, and was then flown to UCLA Medical Center in critical condition. Recently released records show that Skortsov has twice been convicted of driving under the influence. He was first convicted in 2007 before he turned 21. His second occurred was in 2009. He was cited in January for driving under the influence, and most recently cited in July for driving with a suspended license. . Heredia stated that LAPD is still uncertain to whether alcohol was involved and are investigating. KTLA reported that Price’s mother said the boys did not have permission to be in the Ferrari and had apparently taken the car out for a joyride. The car was not registered to Skortsov, and investigators are working to deduce how he came in possession of the vehicle. Skortsov is still hospitalized with severe injuries, but is now in stable condition. The Price family is shocked and devastated by their son’s death. Price’s father, Max Price II, said in a statement to CBS,“ I hope he lives [Skortsov]—to pay the consequences for what he did to my son.”
