Another Extreme historical milestone occurred. Cohort 2 of 4040, which consists of 12 N. Americans and 12 Peruvians met in person for the first time in Lima, Peru on Thursday November 19, 2009. On November 22, they will head to Iquitos to begin 5 months of church planting training. This group will plant 36 new churches over the next two years in the areas around Iquitos and Pucallpa.

With a population of just 41,394, it is easy to overlook Puerto Maldonado. For precisely this reason, the gospel of Jesus Christ has not reached many of the local residents of the area. Once outside of Puerto Maldonado, small villages dot the dirt roads and rivers that crisscross the thick Amazon jungle. The climate is hot, humid and wet and provides for the lush geography that is common to South American Jungles. The city was started as a mining community and now supports a rich culture that has rubber, gold and agriculture as its main exports. Prostitution is a growing problem in Puerto. Red lights litter the streets at night and there is a deep sense of darkness that envelopes the city.

On Friday, the construction team finished pouring the bond beam on the second story as well as getting 3 of the 4 trusses up. They had a load of block show up today, and they formed an assembly line up the stairs to the second story to get all the cinder blocks up quickly.

Due to the late night on Saturday, the crew was able to sleep in until 9 am the following morning. The short term volunteers headed back to the church for Sunday School. There were over 50 adults (including the 14 Americans) and 30 children in attendance. God is doing great things in Puerto Maldonado.

The 14 short term volunteers began arriving in Peru at 10:30pm Thursday the 24th of September. By 1:00am Friday morning, all 14 volunteers had made it safely to Lima. A group of 5 volunteers stayed the night in the Lima airport, while the other nine got a short 3 hours of rest in a hotel before they continued on the journey. Callie was interviewed by Brian Tibbs (Extreme Director) two weeks after moving with her other 40/40 partners to Iquitos. She is currently going through Bible and jungle training before heading to Puerto Maldonado where she will stay for 2 years planting churches.

Callie is from Boise, ID, and a part of Boise First Church of the Nazarene. Callie moved to Peru in February of 2009, and has completed 3 months of language training, prior to moving to Iquitos. Please continue to keep Callie in your prayers.
