LORDI Releases 'Nailed By The Hammer Of Frankenstein' Single; More 'Scare Force One' Album Details

Finnish heavy metal monsters LORDI will release their seventh studio album, "Scare Force One", on November 3 via AFM.

The first single from the CD, "Nailed By The Hammer Of Frankenstein", can be streamed below.

To celebrate the release of the new album, LORDI will play one of its infrequent domestic shows — the record-release party is set for November 1 at The Circus in Helsinki.

According to LORDI mainman Mr. Lordi, the material on "Scare Force One" is more experimental than before. It's not a theme or concept record, per se, but there is a red thread that runs through all the songs.

Says the singer: "The overall sound of the band is more modern this time, and we've tried out some new tricks here and there. The basic LORDI building blocks are still present however, so there's no shortage of melodic hooks in the songs. The first single, 'Nailed By The Hammer Of Frankenstein', is pretty representative of where the band is right now."

In addition to its sound, the band has also tweaked its outward appearance. The new costumes, designed and built by Mr. Lordi as always, will be debuted at the record release show.

"I wanted to make the band's colour scheme more unified than it has been and I think it worked out quite nicely," Mr. Lordi says. "Hella and Mana have probably changed the most, and with the trip to a hair salon for a new dye job, they're looking great."

LORDI's last two albums were made in Nashville under the watchful eye of legendary producer Michael Wagener (SKID ROW, WARRANT). But this time the band wanted to do it differently and recorded the album with veteran Finnish producer Mikko Karmila.

"We really wanted to make this record in Finland, with a Finnish producer," Mr. Lordi. "We finally managed to get Mikko Karmila to work with us, which is great. He has come up as a potential producer for the band on several previous occasions but now, we've really nailed it. We've definitely had no reason to regret this decision so far and are extremely happy with the album."

LORDI's last CD, "To Beast Or Not To Beast", was released on March 1, 2013 in Europe (excluding Finland) via AFM Records. The CD was made available in North America on March 19, 2013 through The End Records.

KRIEG's Neill Jameson: On Transient, Writing Music, and Dad Rock

As I indicated in my review, I liked Krieg's new record, Transient. But I was also critical in some parts, as certain songs left me less impressed than others. Still, frontman Neill Jameson took it in stride and said nice things about the article. With that in mind, I decided to get in touch with him and let him elaborate on what went into the making of Transient, along with some fun banter about working at a record store.

Metal Injection: With Transient, what was your primary mission, musically speaking? What feelings or experiences were you trying to express?
Neill Jameson: I think the main objective in the simplest terms was to make a record that, if it turned out to be the last one I ever do, it would be something I could walk away satisfied with. I had a lot of anxiety going into the studio because it had been so long since the last full-length and I was such a different person when we did The Isolationist than I am now. I wanted to convey more human emotion through this record versus the last one which had a very detached and cold feeling to it. I wanted to express who I was at the time of writing and recording, a more anger and aggression fueled record, more focus. How I felt after getting off medication for depression and bi-polar disorder, like this veil that was lifted that I wasn't even aware of being wrapped around me in the first place. Outside of the deeper meaning I've just grown tired of working within what the black metal rulebook seems to dictate about sound aesthetics and because of this I was motivated to work outside of my comfort zone in terms of the writing. I listen to a lot of other music outside of metal and I wanted to use my interest in that to inform and reinforce Krieg's new music.
In my review of the album, I was a little critical of the spoken word track. Perhaps you'd like to take this chance to elaborate on "Home" a little more and speak to what it means to you.
I will be the first to admit that it is a rather self indulgent track but to me almost everything I do is indulging myself in some manner or another. I've always tried to include an instrumental track or two on each full length but this time around I wanted it to have more of a direct impact than just some sort of abstraction. Seeing that I never print my lyrics I thought this time around I would create a thesis for the record, something that spoke to exactly what the themes lyrically were. Besides the sort of writing I do for Decibel I also do a lot of private writing that doesn't necessarily connect to something of a comedic or observational nature and the two passages on this song are examples of that. The first voice represents anger and disgust, the aggression you feel when you're already introverted and, I suppose the best way to word it would be "sensitive" to the world and other people around you just continually do things that, to put it mildly, disagree with you. The second passage is representative of paranoia, distrust and the discomfort of being in a world you have little in common with. Two sides of the same coin.
I'm a big fan of Integrity, so I can't help but ask, how was it to work with Dwid? I got to shake hands with him at a show in Hartford last year, and he seemed like a great guy to be able to collaborate with.
Both he and Thurston were really great in their understanding and delivery of the material. They both have very distinct voices and speech delivery and were absolutely perfect to complete the idea I had for this track. Dwid has been incredibly supportive of Krieg's music between agreeing to take part in this track to introducing me to different like minded people to releasing the split with Leviathan through his Holy Terror Records. I'm very humbled and grateful for both of their participation in the record.
There is simply so much metal out there now, with piles and piles of records out each week. Do you have a few that have come out recently that make you say "man…this record is awesome!"
Whenever I talk to anyone on this subject my mind generally just goes blank, which is horseshit because there is a lot of great bands operating from the demo level and up right now making metal that is both interesting and engaging. One thing that came to mind instantly would be the new Earth record, which I don't know if you could classify as metal really but it's the first thing they've done since the fourth record that really caught me. I really enjoyed the new Entombed record, or Entombed AD or whatever the fuck you want to call it now. It felt like the missing link after "Wolverine Blues". Outer Heaven and Sangus are two bands that are working on 7 inch material that have really left a strong impression on me as well.

Working at a record store adds an extra-level of day-to-day to being in the music world. So with that in mind, how do you keep yourself passionate about music? How do you stop yourself from becoming jaded?
I don't. It's a natural process, I can't really stop it. But I do take advantage of being in a store like ours where we deal in basically every genre – and through that I look into different genres and artists I normally wouldn't be drawn to if I were just a regular customer. I suppose a negative side effect there is I've developed a strong love for a lot of dad rock shit which I should feel ashamed about but somehow do not. In terms of my own music and writing I don't let an overload of stimuli burn me out and I only work on writing when I feel that it's time, so as not to force anything.
Would you care to elaborate on who some of those dad rock bands are? Feel free to plead the 5th amendment otherwise.
It really hasn't just been dad rock, this job has exposed me to a lot of different music that I never really considered for myself. I know it's the lame white guy thing to say but being exposed to jazz through this place has been great, stuff like Coltrane's "Sun Ship" or Thelonious Monk's "Underground" which I never would have given a fair chance to otherwise. I listen to a lot of ZZ Top, Neil Young, Jethro Tull etc now as well. It's as if part of my musical taste is run by a 45 year old white dad who's going through a mid life crisis and trying to reconnect to his youth while his wife is fucking the plumber or whatever cliche' that fits this scenario. It's something I've tried to avoid for a long time but I suppose it was inevitable. If I ever find myself saying " this Fleetwood Mac record isn't too bad" then hopefully fifteen minutes later you'll also find me with a gun in my mouth.
In order to make music like Krieg or extreme metal in general, do you think a person needs to be bitter or unhappy? If so, do you think people try to stay unhappy on purpose, just to keep the creative forces going?
There is that concern, isn't there? You hear people say they don't take their medicine because they can't create. People are afraid of being happy or fixing their lives because they think it could cause them to lose what makes their art vibrant and expressive. You hurt so you create but you're terrified that you could be happy and stop creating which is a massive circle since you create to deal with pain in the first place. That's a pretty shallow example but it's a small piece to the answer of your question. I don't think you need to be bitter or unhappy to make aggressive and violent music, but it does help, at least in my case.
But I don't fear being content in my life as a means of degrading my music or writing. If that ever were to happen to me then I would just see where it takes me.

Metal-Themed Lawn Gnomes Are The Future Of Home Decor

Sometimes you come aroacrossss something so ridiculous you pretty much need to show everyone you can think of that might even remotely enjoy it. So in my weekend perusing of the metal-related interwebs, I came across talk of metal lawn gnomes. Not metal like the material, metal like the music! There's a dude on Etsy that makes them, along with a bunch of other subject matter that's equally entertaining. Check 'em out and support good art! Here's a good portion of the metal ones he's got up.

Apparently the guy, named ianthegnome, has also tried twice now to get a Kickstarter-type project going for these gnomes and hasn't had much luck. Here's hoping he tries again, because I know damn well we'd post about it!

We have 52 episodes of The Osbournes that give us a great description of what goes on in their daily lives, and it’s anything but normal behavior. But what we didn’t learn from The Osbournes, we learned today from Sharon’s current TV show “The Talk” where she revealed a secret about dating Ozzy at age 27..

“I was 27, I was just going out with Ozzy at the time … and when we first got together, we would drink a lot together,” she explained of when she was touring with the Black Sabbath rocker. “We had a session of partying … and it’s about 4 in the morning and he says to me, ‘How much do you really love me? ‘… And I’m saying, ‘I’d do anything for you, anything, I absolutely adore you … I’d give my life for you.’” “I’m like, ‘I’ll show you how much I love you, I’d die for you’ … so I went to a room service table … and there was a steak knife,” she said. “I get the knife and I’m like, ‘I love you so much’ and slash, slash, slash on my wrist.’”

She concludes by explaining when the ambulance arrived she claimed that she was just being a “dramatic drunk”, but they threw her in lockdown for attempted suicide anyway. We always knew Sharon was bat-shit crazy, but it's pretty fun to watch her poke at herself for doing something stupid.

Century Media Makes Good on Fans Ripped Off By NACHTMYSTIUM

A few weeks ago we reported on how Nachtmystium frontman Blake Judd is once again screwing over fans who pre-ordered the new, actually excellent, Nachtmystium album The World We Left Behind.
Fans personally PayPal'd Judd money to send pre-orders and he never made good on the orders. Initially, he blamed Century Media for not sending him any CDs. Because of this, fans sent messages to Century Media and at the time they said they would not be able to help on any orders not put through them.
It seems like Century has had a change of heart and is now offering to help any fans screwed by Judd. The label just released this statement:

Century Media Records understands that many people have not received their copies of 'The World We Left Behind' even though they pre-ordered the album directly from front-man, Blake Judd. We know that this is not only frustrating but also a let down to the fans of the band. FAITH NO MORE Confirm Release Of Their First New Album in 18 Years

They've played two new songs live. They've hinted and then really hinted, but today we got confirmation.
Faith No More are releasing a new album in April of 2015. Bassist Billy Gould confirmed the news to RollingStone today. The band will record in their Oakland rehearsal space, produced by bassist Billy Gould and release the album on their own imprint, Reclamation Records, which will be distributed by frontman Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings.
The band also promises a proper U.S. tour in conjunction with the album release. Their first official single, "Motherfucker," which they've already played live, will be released as a 7" on Record Store Day, November 28th.
RollingStone has an in-depth interview with Gould and here are the facts Gould gives us in said interview:

They're pretty far along in the album process.
There is no album title yet.
They've been working on the album for a year and a half.
As for the sound: "There's going to be a lot of space and scope — big, big sound-stage space — but I also think there's gonna be a lot of those things that we already have. All I can say is what we're doing just feels right."
We will have new Faith No More in April of 2015.

MARILYN MANSON Teases New Record Prepared For Landing

Marilyn Manson has had a pretty busy summer. He's performing in a guest starring role on the final season of Sons of Anarchy. He's had a show in Moscow shut down due to bomb threats. And, he's had time to record a new album?

Manson took to Twitter earlier this week to tease that a new album is "prepared for landing."
Manson's last album, Born Villain, was released in 2012 via his own label, Hell, etc. The album sold relatively well, at 120,000 copies but was not received well. With late '90s nostalgia at an all-time high, I feel if Manson comes out swinging with a groove-laced single that harkens back to his previous work, along with the added publicity of the Sons of Anarchy gig, he could really push some units.

VINNIE PAUL Says There's No Bad Blood With Former PANTERA Bandmates

Here's an interesting development. In a recent interview with Metal Blast, Vinnie Paul stated there's no bad blood between himself, Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown. This is the same Vinnie Paul who has constantly denied a Pantera reunion. He was not interested, it would never happen, and "Dime was Pantera." So how could there be no bad blood? Well, here's what he actually said:

"To me, there's no bad blood at all. It's like when you get a divorce from somebody, there's a reason why you got a divorce. You don't have to stay in touch with that person, you don't have to fucking see that person, or do anything with them. I'm just not interested."

That's very zen of Paul to say. While Phil Anselmo is constantly hoping to make peace with Paul, this might be as close as we are ever going to get. Paul is basically saying he wishes no ill will to the guys, but he's just not interested in hanging out with them anymore. I can completely understand that and ultimately, respect his decision.

…And Then Everyone But The Vocalist Quit CHIMAIRA (Again)

Remember back in 2011 when everyone but vocalist and founding member Mark Hunter quit Chimaira? Yeah, that was pretty crazy. Even crazier? It just totally happened again.
Yesterday, guitarist Emil Werstler announced he was leaving the band. Losing your lead guitarist is troubling. But what could be worse than losing your guitarist? How about losing the rest of the band for the second time in three years?!
Guitarist Matt Szlachta, keyboardist and vocalist Sean Zatorsky, bassist Jeremy Creamer and drummer Austin D’Amond issued the following statement exclusively to The PRP later on, on September 2.

“In light of recent news, the rest of the band have decided to part ways with Chimaira. For us this was a great stepping stone, and an honor to play these songs live, and fulfill an incredible legacy. This was an an excellent platform to help continue playing music, when our collective bands either ended or went on a hiatus. Chimaira was an amazing experience and we look forward to future music endeavors with each other.”

The band Prog Death Metal Mining signs contract with Black Legion Productions
The band is wrapping up the recording of their first studio CD Collector of Souls, signed early this month (August) contract with the Black Legion Productions.

Album Review: MIDNIGHT No Mercy For Mayhem

When discussions are had about hotbeds of heavy metal activity in the United States, it's safe to say that Ohio is never on the tip of anyone's tongue. The Buckeye State is responsible for birthing a number of notable bands and artists in the world of heavy music including Marilyn Manson, Mushroomhead, Trent Reznor, Skeletonwitch, and Necrophagia, but Ohio never gets much love from the heavy metal community. No Mercy For Mayhem, the new album from Cleveland's
Midnight, isn't likely to catapult the state onto anyone's radar, but fans of sleazy metal/punk in the vein of Venom and Motörhead are going to have a new favorite album on August 19th.
Those of you reading this who aren't already familiar with Midnight should take note; if you're looking for the perfect soundtrack to accompany a methed up biker gang beating some hapless bystander to a pulp with chains and clubs, No Mercy For Mayhem is the album you need to get your grubby mitts on. Since 2003, Jamie Walters, working under the stage name Athenar, has been creating an infernal racket that's part Motörhead and part G.G. Allin. Midnight's early material is rough and rabid, but, by the time his 2011 debut LP Satanic Royalty was released on Hell's Headbangers Records, Athenar had all but perfected his signature brand of punky heavy metal. The songs on No Mercy For Mayhem are a continuation of the sound from that album, but they're even better than their predecessors.
One of Athenar's enduring strengths as a songwriter is his penchant for crafting catchy melodies, and this talent is on full display on No Mercy For Mayhem. Initially, it's easy to focus on the songs' nonsensical lyrics, but you'll quickly find that the chorus of "Aggressive Crucifixion" or "The Final Rape of Night" has burrowed into your brain and refuses to leave. Lazy listeners will write Midnight off as a gaggle of beer-swilling neanderthals, but metalheads with an ear for a well written tune will easily be able to cut through the abrasive veneer to find this album's melodic core.
It's not unreasonable to say that Midnight is destined to languish in obscurity. The style of music Athenar creates and the band's stage persona all but guarantees Midnight will remain the cultest of cult acts. But don't be frightened off by the simplicity and ugliness of the music, Athenar has an understanding of song composition that's shared by bands as disparate as The Ramones, The Beach Boys, and Motörhead. At the most basic level, all of these bands understand that good rock songs have to be memorable before anything else. They know that a memorable song effects listeners on a visceral level, and music doesn't get much more visceral than Midnight.

MARTY FRIEDMAN Says BABYMETAL Sounds Like MESHUGGAH With J-Pop On Top

Listen, you can hate on Babymetal all you want but at the end of the day metal superstars love them. Take Carcass for instance, who basically said they're just a fun group to jam and that gimmicks run rampant in the genre. Who more do we need to come to the group's aid? How about former Megadeth guitiarist and Japanese guitar pop legend Marty Friedman?
Friedman recently spoke with Rolling Stone and uttered the following string of sentences that is probably going to make the heads of quite a few elitists explode with rage.

"Babymetal, if you strip off that heavy metal guitar stuff, all you have is your basic fun, quirky, Japanese pop stuff. But the interpretation is super-metal. To me, it sounds like Meshuggah with Japanese pop on top of it. So for someone like me who's been playing metal forever, it's really fresh to hear. I mean, I can hear another Pantera song, and it's great, but we've heard it before a billion times."

Oh hey, your head is still in tact. That's good. Fun fact: the guitarist of Babymetal is also the guitarist in Friedman's solo metal project.
For the record I absolutely agree with Friedman. Whether Babymetal are reinventing some odd sun-genre or just having fun, they're doing something different with the metal sound and that's what is really important here. They're breathing new life into a genre that can easily rely on tried-and-true methods of "heavy," and for that I think we all owe Babymetal a commendation to some extent or another. How many times can we hear something "super brutal" before it's just the same pile of shit with a different stench?
