I just bought SONiKA and I made this (using a MIDI file for the notes and using a picture of SONiKA for her in the background). It's The Rainbow Connection. Before I go on this (short) rant I want to make one thing clear. In general, people in America are over-sensitive about things like this. I get that and I agree. We have a tendency to see suggestiveness in things that aren't even there. This video is mildly suggestive, but kids won't pick up on that. I have no issue with the video itself. More, I question of miss "I kissed a girl... and I liked it" is an appropriate role model for kids? It's not about this clip in isolation... it's about what the normal version of the song and the rest of the CD is like if kids want it because they saw it on Sesame Street:

Memories and a History of Kid Pix

Who in here has memories of Kid Pix? I'm probably dating myself somewhat, but I remember being really excited when I finally got Kid Pix after waiting a LONG time for it. It was the coolest thing ever. Today, not so much. There's now cheap pen tablets, and much better software out there that kids will have far more fun with. But Kid Pix, well, Kid Pix redefined art and painting on the computer and made it *fun* - very fun. In fact, Kid Pix was one of those things that I would say changed how I view art.

By chance, today I found a great history of Kid Pix written by the program's author, Craig Hickman, you can read it here. It brought back some memories, and made me remember why I liked computers even. They were a unique tool that redefined what is possible. They allowed your imagination to explore new areas. Oh, and yeah, that's why I see computers as more of an art tool - I'm not a traditional math computer geek. I hate math, and I can't do it well. And no, I couldn't program "hello world" even to save my life. But Kid Pix? Now, that was amazing.

For your young artist today? Well, the version of Kid Pix linked to above is interesting, but honestly a waste of $39. The current Windows version is even worse, though cheap. Now, you can get a cheap Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet for about $65, which comes with Corel's Painter Essentials. This natural paint program blows away Kid Pix. There's other great tools for kids to explore with, such as MyPaint -which is free and can be made full screen like Kid Pix. There's Autodesk Sketchbook, a great natural media sketching program. There's the full-on amazing Corel Painter. There's even Craig Hickman's Beautiful Dorena, which is wacky and fun - and reminds me a bit of the original one-man-project Kid Pix getting all grown up. But it all started with Kid Pix.

One benefit of building a website like this is that I have got a lot of chances to check out different websites, as I have looked for affiliate programs to join and ways to pay for my habit of spending time and money on my websites (I'm under no illusion that I'll get rich from blogging, LOL), and I found this site called Dollhouse that has some really super-cute clothes. Some of the stuff is a bit too edgy for my tastes, but super-cute nevertheless:

Eyebrow Waxing

So, after my cousin (or rather, our argument LOL) convinced me to ask and I found that yeah guys can get their eyebrows waxed no problem I ended up going ahead and trying it. The result... I'm really mad. At myself for having dismissed the thought before and been plucking all these years. MUCH faster and with a much better shape/more "perfect" result than I could ever get by plucking! I had some redness and irritation, I probably shoulda waited another day for my skin to totally heal from being sunburnt, but overall, the result was great! I'll *definitely* not be plucking anymore.

Noonie's Masterpiece

Today, I read Noonie's Masterpiece. This interesting book is about a fourth-grade girl named Noonie who sees herself as a famous artist. Her mom died, and her dad is an archaeologist who travels around the world. Noonie? She lives with her aunt, uncle, and cousin. Nobody really understands her and Noonie says that people just don't understand famous artists. The book starts in her "blue period" she's really rather unhappy most of the book. She gets in trouble at school, she is misunderstood at home, and her best friend is very different from her. The book chronicles the story of Noonie preparing for an art contest in school.

Now, I won't give away what happens, but there are some great lessons in this book on friendship, what family means, trying new things, doing what you love, etc. To be honest, that doesn't make up for the fact that the book is quite... disorientating. Rather than a well-crafted storyline, reading this book is more akin to being thrown into the author's imagination. It's random; I'll give it that. If you're a really misunderstood fourth grader you'll quite enjoy it - and it's a short, easy read despite the page count. I thought it was fun. But it sure wasn't beautiful art. In short, Noonie's Masterpiece is a fun story and has some good lessons, but if you're expecting a masterpiece - look elsewhere.

Hey everyone, I'm really craving some Koala Yummies (as I knew them as an American kid in the 90s, their real original name is Koala's March). I even learned that I am not alone in this craving. Okay, so, my cousin has been begging me to find her a better paint program for her Ubuntu netbook. Me, personally, I've always used GIMP and thought it treated me well - as well as any program could. I'm not going to get into a long story here. Just, if you have a Wacom tablet and a Linux or Windows computer - try MyPaint. It's amazing. Enough said. Here's a picture of my bad, 2:30AM while lying down in bed and feeling thoroughly tired and uncreative, drawing skills at work:

This girl is smarter than many adults. Wow. I'm impressed for sure! Even if you DISAGREE with her message (this site is for everyone), listen to her arguments and (since those are mostly copied from the normal pro-life argument) even more, how she speaks. Kids this age rarely are so well-spoken. Wow.

Tofu Ain't So Bad

Tofu is one of those things that can be pretty good, as I've learned on my new vegetarianish diet. Some meatless products are nasty. Some are really good like the Tofurky Italian Sausage (and to show you how much I really like it, note that's NOT an advertising link... Amazon doesn't sell them, though they do have tofu cookbooks). I'll take one of these on a hot dog bun with barbeque sauce over a REAL hot dog any day. Healthier, no animal flesh, and better tasting? That's a win all around (though a bit pricey normally, I got them on sale at Smith's).

What is the point of math? Why can't Joey figure out how many people are in his class? Why do all these people need to ask us? Why do they ask us, and then tell us we are wrong, if they knew the answer then why did they ask? It's so confusing! Why do they tell us how to do it:

If you have an Android phone, like HTC's Hero, seriously check out this Android app. It's called Sketcher - it's amazing and it's tiny. Just search for Sketcher in the Android Market. Very useful, high quality drawing tool. Don't have an Android phone? Never fear, it's a port of an existing web app called Harmony that you can use in your browser. VERY cool stuff! Post in the comments links to YOUR cool Sketcher or Harmony art if you have any online, I'd love to see it!
