At approximately 1:44 local time this morning (5:44UTC), an earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter Scale struck near Russia at a depth of 373.4 miles (601 km) below sea-level.

This Major Quake had an epicenter located at 54.9°N, 153.3°E — about 222 miles (359 km) WSW of Esso, Russia/1472 miles (2375 km) NNE of Tokyo, Japan/6515 miles (10485 km) ENE of Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

The ‘quake was felt as far as Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the city home to a nuclear submarine base and on Sakhalin island, where Russia’s largest liquefied natural gas project is located. Russian emergency authorities issued a Tsunami Warning for the regional areas, advising Russian residents to seek higher grounds. This warning was, however, lifted several minutes later as the initial threat diminished.

However, earthquakes of this size may sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 kilometers of the epicenter.
Aftershocks can be expected in the coming hours and most likely days.
