Koop Dreams

December found us spending the morning in wabi sabi ceramic artist Lori Koop's studio for a portrait sitting.

In the sunlit wonder of her workspace, sketchbook drawings and mountains of clay are shaped into whimsical bird houses and unique vessels.

Her hand shaped, finger pinched pots in earthy colors and organic shapes bear singular words or thoughtful haikus and offer themselves as gentle reminders to listen, to breathe, to follow the unique shape of your dreams and embrace the lopsided poetry of your life. Amen.

Four boys and a baby girl keep Mom and Dad busy shuttling between soccer fields and school yards. But at home, a small grove of olive trees and a spacious yard offer a soothing backdrop to a relaxed family life and a host of more boisterous sibling adventures. I can't wait to return when baby S is old enough to stand on her own in the midst of her brothers.

This bright eyed 3 1/2 year old showcased his strength and imagination during an afternoon of real push mowers, mud pits and dump trucks all the while waxing poetic about auger drills. His family's backyard plays host to a collection of fruit trees, a shaded hammock and the endless inventions of boyhood. Love.

Each Christmas morning the G Family shuffles out in their jammies to collect ripe navels from their orange tree for fresh squeezed fun. We enjoyed some pre-holiday cheer a few weeks ago to capture the images above which happily included the family croquet set.

The straight lines of their picket fence offer the perfect foil to this family's creative heart. From film to yoga to the family band, a spirit of collaboration prevails - including the family dog and, for an afternoon, me the photographer.

Even a head injury, moments after my arrival, failed to quash the joy of big brother. An ice pack and many hugs later, everyone was game for lots of play and laughter.

We've returned from New York's Fingerlakes with a trove of stories and images - graining the calves with Grandma and Grandpa, working the tractor, catching frogs, watching night fill with stars and lightening bugs, leaping into the swimming pond, eating ice cream upon ice cream upon ice cream cone. Summer perfection.

Our travels also connected us with Amy Brill of Amy Brill/Totally Brill sweaters. We're still in the midst of an exciting creative collaboration including a collection of images for her soon to launch website.

With recent temperatures hovering above the century mark, mooning over Amy Brill's Fall collection may seem counter intuitive, but her hand spun designer knits and natural gauze garments are fawn-worthy. We look forward to sharing her goods with you!

In 2000, as newly minted college graduates and soon-to-be parents with meagerly paying film jobs, my husband and I "commissioned" our friend Tom to fashion a crib for our first babe. The piece - shaped from bleeding heart, zebra and found Vermont timber - is among our prized possessions.

Today Mr. Beales's mysterious kinship with found woods and everyday objects is being showcased in his first West Coast solo show, Conjure, through April 4th at the Kinsey/ Desforges Gallery in Culver City. Not to be missed.

Pictured above is our first babe Wyatt, nearly eight now, drawing inspiration from the show. Baby Lala - the most recent child to dream in the crib - crawls in the background.

This family of four shared a beautiful ease with one another - no stiffly held smiles or frustrated nudging. Just an easy afternoon in their backyard and a neighboring canyon.

I often discover - usually when a child's attention starts to wander - that clients have sweetened a photo shoot with a reward, like an ice cream cone or a long awaited toy at the end. Parents and their children are surprised when they realize our time together is pain-free and playful. No bribes necessary. But, it touched my heart when I learned that this nine-year old would be rewarded with two hours of playing dolls with her mother once our shoot ended, and that her twelve-year old brother would ride go carts with his Dad.

No, we don't always dress our babe in Mrs. Claus velvet at the beach - only when her Auntie Helen has furnished us with such attire. This photo was snapped during our holiday on Kauai just before Lauden Arabella outgrew the size "six-months" costume. We have similar snap shots of her big brother Wyatt in a bumble bee costume buzzing through the garden courtesy of the same beloved Aunt.

Our return to the mainland, post New Year, was marked by fevers, rashes, photo shoots, and a bout with the flu that spread through our house like a California brush fire. Needless to say, the blog politely took a back seat. But I'm happy to report that my tribe has recovered and is thriving and my delirious wish to escape to the South Pacific and live off of coconuts and sunshine has subsided - a symptom of the fevers no doubt.

We are happy to announce that Kimberly Blaine will receive a priceless portrait session of her two boys this winter for entering our Eyebright Holiday Give-A-Way! Known as The Go To Mom , Kimberly sent this heart-warming description of what the holidays mean to her in answer to our October call for entries:

The holidays are a time when I know we will be at our snuggly-est! We so look forward to the smell of the tree, the fun toy trains and snoopy Christmas figurines, and our crazy cats climbing the tree. The most touching part for us is to hang our stockings with our names on them that Lee's mother needle pointed. It took her one year per stocking. They are truly amazing.

Ingrid of Calabasas will also receive an 8x10 print for making us laugh out loud. Her description was brief but to the point.

Rain clouds threatened to put a damper on this Saturday afternoon shoot, but we persevered. Lucky for me. Like her bookcases, Eliza's imagination is teeming with vivid stories, delicate drawings and delicious words. From the hillside garden - that prompted her to channel The Secret Garden, to a replica of the Borrower's house carefully mounted on the wall, to a beloved collection of handmade dolls, Eliza's world is a wonderland lovingly nurtured by her artist parents. My afternoon passage was nothing short of enchanting.

The end of September found Eyebright boogie boarding the Newport Beach break with this sun kissed pair. A last splash before fall.

Shorter days and cooler evenings signal Autumn and the swift passage of time. It's hard to believe but Baby Lauden - Lala - is already holding her own; propping up her head on her sturdy neck and arms to survey her surroundings.

For big brother Wyatt, the new season means more loose teeth, soccer play and the beginning of another school year. Marking his seamless transition from Summer to Fall is a first draft to Santa. "Three months is not long to wait for Christmas," he decided on the way to school yesterday.

Our newest family member, Lauden Arabella, arrived on Memorial Day. We have been happily cocooning this last week as we acclimate to our new life together - nursing, slumbering and memorizing one another.

Eyebright will resume shoots in mid-June with a limited summer shooting schedule. A handful of sessions remain. Contact us now to snag a spot.
