YouTube still testing pay per view model

YouTube is still thinking about the rental service which has been in beta testing for some while. It is currently working with a small selection of videos but according to Hunter Walk the website will offer the option to charge rental fees for uploaded content. This is interesting as YouTube goes to the pay per view model rather than relying on advertising. This way users will be able to monetize their content directly by setting a price for the submitted content. Still it’s not sure if the end user will be able to set a specific price or what kind of control over pricing will be given.

We don’t know as many details as we wanted to know about this, neither if the service will be available for all users or just for a restricted public as it happened with the Partner Program. Also can this be a threat for Netflix’s Watch Instantly solution? One major advantage on Netflix is that you only pay a monthly subscription and get a lot of content while here is a pay per event model. InstantAction – streaming video games live?

InstantAction recently launched an innovative way to play and share video games online. Their new platform allows users to instantly play and embed video games as you usually do with YouTube videos. This way you don’t need to download any content on your computer then install: the games are embedded into different supported browsers after you created a profile and logged in. The games seems like they are live streams but actually your computer’s hardware is doing the trick.

A similar service has been launched by OnLIVE and at that time I wrote a REVIEW about how the solution works. But OnLIVE is different because all the processing is done on their servers then the stream is pushed back into a video player.

The Secret of Monkey Island is the first game running with InstantAction and you can see in the following video how you can embed it on Facebook. You can play it for about 20 minutes then you are being asked to purchase the full game and seems like this model will apply for the further releases.

InstantAction says the platform is very fast and you can play 2 or 3 GB games using a 5Mbps internet connection without experiencing lag problems or waiting to download the entire game. For the moment only PC owners can use it as the Mac version is not supported yet. Developers may be very happy with this service: they can charge for premium games or add time limited trials to promote their work. Skyfire brings flash video streaming on the Android

Skyfire makes Flash video possible for Android devices as they announced the Skyfire 2.0 browser. The new app converts Flash videos to H.264 via their servers then pushes the content to the mobile devices. What’s interesting is that Skyfire’s servers are automatically adjusting the video resolution so the video will be displayed according to your phone’s screen size and network speed to get the best video streaming quality.

“Skyfire on Android uses cloud-computing technology to enable this web video; the benefits include faster and smoother video playback, and extended battery life by offloading more of the work to cloud servers” , CEO Jeff Glueck stated. You can see below the concept’s presentation:

Users will be able to display the content as on a full desktop browser or optimized for the mobile device. The explore option allows you to browse videos from YouTube or search related media on Google or Twitter and then share. The application is free to download in the Android version (version 2.0 beta) and is also available for Nokia and Windows Mobile phones in version 1.5. It doesn’t support Windows Media, Quicktime or Silverlight streaming at the moment (Silverlight seems to be the next step) but we may expect some improvements in the future. Multitouch zooming is also available as you can see in the following video demoing the app:

Skyfire has some limitations: it won’t actually work with all the Flash based videos and sometimes it crashes. Even more you are not able to play Flash games so it’s not really a full solution to view Flash content on the mobile devices. But it’s for sure a good step ahead. We are still waiting for a way to do that.
