Back in 2005, as I recall, I thought I'd stumbled on the world's tallest bluebonnet in the Big Bend region of far west Texas. As the years passed, my confidence waned. But at five foot one, it's still pretty substantial. That's Enrique and Ruby Madrid, from Redford, Texas. Also, a visiting firefighter from California, whose name momentarily eludes me.

Finally, an update to this video blog.

For those who think that working on a Carlos Pina music video set is nothing but grueling hours of matching story-boards up with camera angles and lighting schemes, as well as exhausting sessions with actors, trying to hone down that perfect toss of the head or wistful gaze, well, here is how things usually go.

Again, we have actor Christopher L. Dean making an appearance on my video blog. Chris, and this is no secret, simply loves the camera.

The blood is some special concoction Carlos whipped up the pervious night. We shot at Rosalinda and Dago's house. And the video will be set to the song EVOL, by the band November 2nd.

Look for it in the weeks to come at the finer music boutiques.

Jimmy Fletcher: Self-Taught Artist

A nine-minute mini doc of San Antonio outsider artist, Jimmy Fletcher. The first half is comprised of video images of his paintings. This is followed by a short interview of Fletcher; and then, he reads a decidedly anti-Bush poem that accompanies one of his pieces.

I did this so that Jimmy would have a DVD he could send out to various galleries that might be interested in his work.

Some quick work of the King William Parade of 2006. Last year I somehow managed to march in the parade. Nikki Young and her incredible hook-ups. Anyway, this year was more sedate. The parade starts fresh as it begins snaking through the neighborhood in front of my house, and I decided to be out there with my camera.

This is a peoples' parade. The marching bands and all that Nazi bullshit was at a bare (almost nonexistent) minimum. The queer quotient ran high (leastwise for San Antonio). And the local businesses and all the artists and freaks and their pets from the neighborhood were out and having a blast. That's my idea of a parade. However, someone should have beat the shit out of that asshole in the Ronald McDonald outfit. That's stepping over the line. On my fucking street. As Ms. Klein already explained, No Logo!

Back on May 30th I was in Dallas, and my friend Emily asked to photograph me. In my old age I have mellowed so that I no longer feel the camera (aimed at me) is keen on stealing my soul.

I agreed. Then turned the tables on her with an interview. Love the short hair!

It comes as a shock when I realize I've known Emily for about 20 years, ever since she was around seven. If you listen carefully, you can her her mom, Jean, laughing in the background.

This is a clip from a rough edit of my current short narrative project, titled "Abhorring a Vacuum."

It's basically an improv piece starring Kat O'Neal, Kerry Valderrama, and Carlos Pina. I directed and "scripted" the piece. Russ Ansley shot it.

I was trying to do a sort of porno, without the sex. Whether this succeeds or not will depend on the music. I'm turning the job over to Russ (as I have to rush off to sunny Mexico--IRS issues, understand).

I've not added anything in ages to this video blog (though I have at least four postings sitting on tape and awaiting editing). And so this rushed clip will have to do for now.

Sunday I was video-taping at the Rollercade for Alamo City Roller Girls night. During the half-time break, these kids gathered in the center of the rink to do some break dance moves.

They were pretty good.

I didn't hold onto the video tapes of the Roller Girls, but maybe I'll get some footage of my own next month. They skate and tussle monthly, third Sunday, at the Rollercade, over on the fringe of the Olmos Park complex.

Saturday I visited Carlo Pina's set. He was shooting some scenes for his up-coming Short Ends film, "Bridge to Nothing."

Here we see Kareem, Chris, and Tony clowning around. Well, it's not so much clown makeup they're wearing as, well, they're supposed to be bad-ass bank robbers.

And that is, of course, Dawn, sipping the lemon-lime beverage at the end. Good times!

I met Jimmy Fletcher through my friend Alejandro Ortiz. Jimmy and Alex have know each other since they were kids. They're in their young 40s and each is keen on becoming an artist. They have a lot of potential.

Here is a clip of Jimmy and some of his work.

I first knew him by the nickname Alex gave him. The Moocher. But it seems that Jimmy also calls Alex the Moocher. Very confusing.

Jimmy lives in the Aztlan Courts, a public housing complex on the west side. He collects a monthly disability stipend, what he refers to as his "Loco check." I don't know if he's crazy, but I do know he's making some great art.

My most recent short film is screening this Sunday at the Alamo Drafthouse here in San Antonio at the Westlakes shopping mall. I directed a script by Richard Dane Scott. The title is OPERATION HITMAN: Sacrificial Pets. (Click here to see the entire short.)

I'm passing out DVDs to my cast and crew Sunday night. And this time I included a director's commentary track. A sort of picture-in-picture thing with me pontificating for 20 minutes or so.

This is a scene where our heroes, Jimmy and Bailey, are looking for a stray dog to kill. Here I should point out that it is a comedy.

A few weeks back I was doing some crew work on Carlos Pina's short film, El Pollo Fuerte (script by yours truly). In this clip we are doing a nighttime campfire scene up at Canyon Lake at the home of filmmakers Russ and Lisa Ansley.

One of the cast members is the very talented Chris Dean (or as he likes to be credited, Christopher L. Dean). Chris has more than a passing resemblance to Leonardo DiCaprio (no matter what he might say). Now, my favorite DiCaprio movie by far is What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Maybe one day Leonardo will be able to match that great performance. I'll keep waiting. Until then, here's Arnie Grape.

I would have taped the event, but my camera was out in the truck, and I was half-anticipating flying bullets.

Hot Wells

Above the banks of the San Antonio River, not far from the intersection of S. Presa and Southcross, you'll find the remains of the once famous Hot Wells Hotel, originally built in 1886. The buildings, which throughout their history have been plagued by periodic fires, have been used for different purpose over the decades. Hotel, bathhouse, movie studio, school, trailer park, restaurant, etc. The one constant is the hot sulphur springs that, to this day, still bubble up and run into the river.

Carlos is directing a short film for the Short Ends Project based on my script. The title is El Pollo Fuerte, and it should be premiering December 17th at the Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes.

We need a good location for a sort of low-level crime lord. Some place roomy, yet seedy. I think we found the perfect location.

This is a remix of some clips from Susan Kirkpatrick's video blog, Kitykity. She's from Plano, and one of the first vloggers I have ever met. She showed up for the Meet the Vloggers event at Node 101 here in San Antonio. I got to meet her, Michael Verdi, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, and some members of the press from The San Antonio Current.

Afterwards, me, Susan, and Juan Carlos went to dinner and drinks. Susan mentioned something about never having anyone remix her vlog entries.

This will direct you to a page where a short film of mine should start playing. It's titled The Price of Stamps, and stars Carlos Pina, Mark Daratt, Louisette Zurita, and Rosalinda Coto (who is getting married this month!). It played last month at the Seguin Film Festival, but sadly failed to win me the coveted Bronze Pecan Award. Maybe I needed more car chases and nudity. It was all shot here on San Antonio's southside, with the exception of one scene shot in the state park outside of Bandera.
