The Soap Opera of SBI Scam Review

SBI! stands for Site Build It! and it has been around for ages. Well, I found it in 2006. I didn’t buy it, so I can’t say how good or how bad it was for that time. However, I liked the SBI affiliate program giving a commission of $75 out of any sale. Nice, but I had other plans, so I wrote a few words about it, slapped in my affiliate link in a couple of places and soon forgot about it. Until last night, when Lissie wrote Site Build It SBI Scam Review, a post which was going to attract a lot of comments and launch a hot debate.

If you read Lissie’s post, don’t miss the comments, although it is probably going to take you an hour to go through all of them. Why so many Site Build It! disciples had to jump in and give Lissie such a busy night, I don’t know, but I suppose Griz is right when he says Site Build It makes money by selling the program, rather than by building SBI-based websites. Maybe some of the SBI sites also make money, I don’t know and honestly I don’t care. Even if it does, my opinion, now in 2009, is that the look and feel of the SBI websites is the one of the late 90’s, far too outdated for today’s standards. I feel the same towards the $300 per year per site which Site Build It members have to pay for using the system. I’m not denying their work. By looking at a few of their sites, it’s obvious they put a lot of work and time in writing content. Even if they don’t get the most out of their work, I don’t see anything wrong with that, if they are happy with the outcome.

However, I found the SBI members’ reaction at Lissie’s post quite weird. Do you use AdSense? Maybe you do. How many reviews of how bad money maker AdSense was have you read? I’ve read maybe hundreds. Did you ever feel the need to jump in and defend Google on all those negative reviews?

Until yesterday, I thought Site Build It! was just another tool which made possible that people like my grandmother have their website without having to learn too many things, a website reminding her of her youth years, something to keep her active and busy in these years when everything hurts more or less in the body. I went as far as giving away a free ebook by Ken Evoy to readers subscribing to this blog’s feed. The book is still there, but beware that every hyperlink in it contains my affiliate code. I tried to remove it, but it seems that’s not possible.

What I learned from that ebook was that one needed to have a system in order to set up a successful online business.

What I learned from the SBI members attitude was that systems like Site Build It!, which generate such cultish behaviours can be devastating for beginners who fall in their trap.

Is AdSense Smart Pricing Stopping You From Making Money Online?

If you are trying to earn money by using Google AdSense, you may have already heard about smart pricing. If you are a fearful kind of person, you’ll think twice, or even ten times before putting the code on your sites. The slightest possibility of getting your AdSense account smart priced would make you wait a week more, a month more, a year more… some will wait for a life more before having the guts to display those ads on their website.

While it is true that you could use some AdSense tips and rules, in order to get started, too much fear at the wrong moment would lead you nowhere.

Am I Right To Fear AdSense Smart Pricing?

I believe life is an ongoing balance of risks vs. benefits. Before taking any decision, we estimate the good and the bad that may happen as a consequence. If the wish to have the good is stronger than the fear of the bad, we are taking that action. If the fear is stronger, we are paralyzed. I don’t say either variant is better, because this is a personal option for each of us and for each decision we have to take.

Being right to fear smart pricing depends very much on the moment you choose to listen to that fear of yours. Have you managed to bring so much traffic to your website? Go fear! Are you still struggling with 10-50 unique visitors per day? Forget smart pricing, your concern should be bringing in the traffic first.

Why am I writing this posts that teaches you nothing on AdSense smart pricing, as you may have hoped when landing in here? Because it has been proven that it’s possible to make money niche blogging with hot topics. The author of this demonstration shows how he’s gotten 1.5 million visitors to a bunch of brand new sites in 8 days, and how that translated into money earned. Reading through the comments on that post, I noticed that some readers expressed their concern of publishing AdSense on hot trends blogs, which most probably leads to smart pricing.

So what?!

First of all, if you get enough traffic, money would follow. Is your AdSense account so precious to you that you wouldn’t bear a two weeks smart pricing? OK, then use affiliate links to monetize that traffic. Griz, the author of the mentioned experiment could have been using any other type of monetisation program. It happened to be AdSense. It could have been Kontera, or some Clickbank product. The idea was that he managed to bring all that traffic writing about hot topics of the past week.

Besides, if we do a rough calculation, $9000 earned out of 1.5 million visitors, means about $6 per thousand visitors. It’s probably much lower than in many other niches, but it’s still $9000 more in his pocket, isn’t it? What if Griz would have feared smart pricing?

How Much Money Are You Making With AdSense?

If you are making a lot, whatever a lot means to you, then if you get smart priced, you’ll still make something. Smart pricing is reversible. If you see a drop in earnings for several days, you take the ads off the last blog and you’ll be fine in a week or so.

If you are making very little, what would be the difference if you noticed a drop in your earnings?

What’s the use of preserving a clean, not smart priced, AdSense account that brings you almost nothing? What’s the use of being the early bird, if you are afraid of worms?

Before Getting Rich Online, Don’t You Need a Better Job?

Get Backlinks to Get Traffic

Backlinks are what some people would call the Holy Grail of getting traffic to a site, be it a blog or a simple static website. Some backlinks are easy to get: bloggers like to comment on other blogs, they like to link out, they are grouped in bigger or smaller communities based on their interests and topics they write about. However, not all backlinks are alike. The ones that matter most for your blog are not the ones anchored on your name. Why would people search for your name online? Well, if your name is Paris Hilton or Sarah Palin, there’s another story. But for the rest of us, with common names, such backlinks barely contribute to promoting our site in Google’s SERPs for those relevant keywords which define what our site is about.

How to Get Backlinks

Get backlinks in any way you can. Find other bloggers in your niche, write about their blogs and they’d return you the favor and write about yours. Submit your site to web directories. Write articles for ezines. Ask your mother to start a blog and teach her how to link to you. Buy links. Get social. However, you may find this difficult, especially if you write about topics in very narrow niches such as “how to pass the thread through the needle’s eye with your cat jumping on your back”. If you ever tried that, you already know how complicated this can be. Jim also knows it and blogs about it. But how can you meet Jim and others like him?

Where to Meet Bloggers Like You

Imagine that you are not the only one in your nice trying to find backlinks for your blog. All you need is somebody to connect you with your peers. This role is very well accomplished by private networks like ConnectContent, a network where webmasters with common interests congregate. Since Jane wants to link to my blog because she finds it related to what she writes about, why can’t I tell Jane what anchor I want her to use for that link? Can We Make Money Online With Holidays?

How can I make more money online? This is the question I start almost every day with, especially since the moment I’ve decided to take less internet marketing clients and develop my own portfolio of websites. For the month of October, our main project was How to make money online with Halloween. We are going to show you how we did it, from setup to promotion, to the follow up, and the conclusions. The main conclusion is that yes, almost everybody can make good money online with holidays, because of the buying fever and because of the traditions so many people choose to respect year after year.

Make money online with Halloween: The Setup

In the last 3-4 days of September, we have developed the following websites:

One Halloween online store based on Affilistore (free software) and on datafeeds from ShareASale (affiliate network which offers free datafeeds for a large number of merchants). Cost: 0 (we set the shop as a subdomain on one of our general domains). The shop had maybe thousands of pages, but at the end of October we had only 254 pages indexed by Google
One main blog: Cost: 0 (we used a free hosted service). We wrote and backdated about 20 posts for the beginning. We submitted abut 4-5 posts to about 10 social networking places, using socialposter.com (free service). Then, after we got at least one page of the blog indexed, we timestamped 20 more posts to be published on daily basis. We didn’t submit any more posts to social media, because we already managed to get almost instant indexing for new posts with Google, so we focused our efforts elsewhere
14 support blogs: Cost: 0 (we used free hosted services, different from the one of the main blog, so we can give it links from various IPs). These blogs had between 1 and 30 posts on them, and in their sidebar we had links to 3-6 posts from our main blog.
One post and an affiliate banner on my tips & tricks blog (the aff banner had 30,000 impressions during October). The post was submitted to about 10 social networking places, using socialposter.com

Make money online with Halloween: The Working Process

After we started to see some traffic for our main blog, we started to add more posts based on the keywords we noticed people find us for. This is the traffic evolution for the first two weeks after getting indexed:

Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how many days passed from setting the blog until getting it indexed, because I backdated the first posts. As far as I remember, the blog was set up on September 24th, so it means the indexing took less than one week.

You can see from the above chart that the traffic really took of from the 9th day since getting indexed. We kept on watching the keywords and adding more and more content, and as you’ll see from the following graph, it was for the better:

How to make money with Halloween: second wave of stats

On October 25th we though that was the end, as we saw a decline of the traffic. The 24th and the 25th of October were also awful in terms of sales (we barely got 2 or 3 sales during these two days), so we imagined that was it. However, on the 26th we saw the traffic and the sales increasing again. Until October 28th, the sales maintained high, but not as much as in mid-October. You’ll see below the traffic chart for the last part of the project:

As you can see, after the 25th we recorded the biggest traffic volumes. Despite that, the sales were low, and their trend was towards zero as we approached October 31st. On October 30, realizing that we are not going to sell any more costumes, as it was already too late for the delivery in time, we added AdSense to the blog. We made almost two dollars out of that, so it isn’t worth talking about it.

Make money online with Halloween - Weekly traffic for the main blog

As you can see, we managed to attract almost 10,000 unique visitors to our blog in about one month’s time. You are probably curious to find out how much money did all this work bring us.

How much money we made and how much time we traded for it

First, the time:

setup of the affiliate shop: 20 minutes
setup of the 15 blogs: 10 minutes each x 15 = 150 minutes
setup of aff banners on AllTipsAndTricks, plus writing the post: 20 minutes
writing 72 posts for the main blog: 10 min x 72 = 720 minutes
writing posts on the support blogs: 5 min x 75 posts = 375 minutes
keyword research plus checking the stats 180 minutes
getting links: 40 minutes per day x 20 days = 800 minutes

Total: 2265 minutes = almost 40 hours.

Now, the money:

Sales from the main blog: 71
Sales from the support blogs: 18, coming from only 4 of the 14 blogs. One of the blogs is still not indexed
Sales from the Affilistore shop: 28
Sales from AllTipsAndTricks banners and post: 2

Total number of sales: 119
Average commission per sale: $7.04

Total money made online: $838 in affiliate commissions + $2 in AdSense = $840

As you can see, it is not a huge amount. It comes at about $21 per hour, which is less than what I charge my clients. Nevertheless, taking into consideration a few facts, we can consider it a success:

The support blogs will serve us in our next projects in the niche of party and celebrations, because we can easily change the sidebar links to point to anything we want.
None of the sites involved had any PR, as they were all new, except my AllTipsAndTricks which has PR0 despite the fact that it is more than two years old and it has a lot of links (one more reason for you to stay away from selling links and writing paid posts - I’ve stopped all these several months ago and still I see this penalty on that blog). At the next PR update, thanks to the links we gathered, some of these blogs will have some PR, meaning time and money saved for the future.
Guess who’s going to make a lot of money next Halloween? I’ll make sure to keep all these blogs alive, with one post per month, until October 2009, when I’ll have the pleasure to get top rankings for lots of costume ideas keywords.

Final notes on making money online at holidays

In the beginning, I didn’t know which one of the 15 blogs will become the main blog, so I set them up with a few posts each and waited to see what happens. Nine of the blogs were targeted for Halloween, the others being general holidays and party supplies blogs. The Halloween blog which got indexed the first became the main blog. Now, when the project ended, I can tell you that out of the 72 posts published on that blog, only 49 got indexed in Google. The affiliate store had 254 pages indexed, but there was almost no link building done for the shop, and this was reflected in the sales.
So I can say that one of the major differences is in the inbound links. Unfortunately, I don’t have the traffic data for the affiliate shop, because I forgot to set up a separate Statcounter project for that subdomain. But I’m sure that if we hadn’t neglected link building for that site, the results would have been much better. Nevertheless, it is noticeable that it still brought in 28 sales, times $7 affiliate commission, meaning almost $200 for less than one hour of work.
Finding links for your niche blogs can be a challenge, but you have to be creative and keep in mind how important this is in internet marketing. Only look at the time stats we published here: the biggest amount of time in the project was spent getting links. This was the most time consuming activity of all, but it also was the most rewarding one.

I must admit I write very fast. However, you may excel in other skills than writing. If you have troubles in writing fast, then you can check out this content generation program which can help you a lot. We are not using any software to generate content, because I’m just too lazy to learn how to use them, but this Blog Content Wizard I’ve pointed you to is maybe the best one you could find. It generates readable articles and its author supports his customers very well. I know a lot of people who use it and are happy. This was not an affiliate link, we get nothing if you buy it, but I really think it is a must have if you cannot write easily about various stuff.

Each year is full of holidays: now we have Christmas, then in February it will be the Valentine’s day, then the Easter, then Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and so on. After your first year of setting up a small business for each of these holidays, you’ll also benefit from your work in the years to come.

One more word about affiliate networks: ShareASale is not the only option. I’ve chosen them because of the datafeeds and because they have a great facility which helped me produce content for all those blogs very quickly: the “Make a Page” feature allows you to select a merchant and some keywords, then it generates the html code for the post, which you need only to copy and paste into your blog post. Add a few words in the beginning and in the end, so you make it unique (think of how many affiliates use the same texts), publish the post and you’re done. You can have a decent blog post in less than 10 minutes. Besides, if you have a make money online blog, you can promote ShareaSale and make $1 from each person you refer (like we do here ).

One of the more or less shared dreams in the internet marketing world is to make fast money. Since we’ve been starting this blog, earlier this year, I’ve joined a lot of forums about the ways to make money on the internet. After a couple of months I understood why there are so many people who never manage to make any money online, not to mention making it fast.

This article is not going to teach you anything, it’s not a tutorial for online money making tools, it is just my need to share a few thoughts with you, thoughts about this strange industry where many people don’t think about themselves of doing something, or running a business, but rather they imagine that they make money olnine. So, since all they have to do is money, they don’t do anything else, they just prepare themselves to make money some day. But where’s that day? From time to time, their hard disk becomes full of all ebooks, videos, courses with tips to make money online, so they have to archive those materials on some DVDs which will take their place in the bookcase, pray to dust and forgetfulness.

I must confess that I never made any money online. All that I made were websites. Those websites made me money. Those websites gave me knowledge. That knowledge made me money. The knowledge got me clients. Those clients made me money. As you can see, I made everything but money. Money was a secondary product of my work. OK, I gladly spend this measly residue of my online activity, I enjoy working naked, I thank God every day for not having to drive three hours every day to go to work. This is true: I make money while I sleep. However, this is possible only because of the work I do when I’m awake and because of the 7-10 hours difference between me and those who send online money my way via my ads or my affiliate links.

You may already know that yesterday a new course which teaches how to make money with pay per click was launched. The teachers are two guys who seem to be quite popular in the “make money online” world: Amit Mehta and Anik Singal. Why do I say they are popular? Simply because over the past three days I received no less than 14 e-mails from various marketers inviting me to buy the new PPC course via their affiliate link and promising me marvelous bonuses. One of those emails really amazed me and made me feel really sad: it was from a guy whose value on my personal scale is far above the value of the PPC Classroom’s authors. I’m not saying any of them is a scammer or doesn’t know what they preach, but this is just how humans work: we do have a hierarchy of people inside our heads, and I surely have mine. When that guy who, in my view, could have given lessons to the other two, sent me that message, he lost a big slice from my confidence in him. However, such things happen all the time. did you know that the average lifespan of members in a membership site is about 3 months?
Back to our pay-per-click sheep, from all those messages promoting this PPC course I understood that the best way of making money with PPC is to wait until somebody launches a course, then go ahead and kill your subscribers list with your messages. Too bad the world is small. Probably there are thousands other people like me, who are subscribed to all the blogs on the internet marketing topic, because they either want to stay updated, or simply because they forgot to unsubscribe. Can you see how small the slice of the pie becomes for each of them?

I Want To Make Money With PPC, But I Can’t Afford To Pay For The Course

This is what I’ve read in a forum this morning. Let me make it clear for you: PPC Classroom is not an expensive course: it is $77 for the first month, plus a monthly subscription of $25 or something like that.
I’m thinking at that poor guy who wanted so badly to try his hand at making money with pay per click, but didn’t have $77 to register. Pay per Click means that you actually have to pay to make money. You pay for the clicks, people buy from you, and if at the end of the day you’ve spent $1000 and you made $1100, you can say you made $100 gross profit that day. But first, you have to actually spend the money. Otherwise, there’s no pay per click, there’s no click, there’s no online profit, nothing. And here I described you a happy case of a profitable campaign. What if it was the other way around?

Do Shortcuts Work With Pay Per Click?

You probably are aware of several shortcuts we take in our attempt to rank better, to get more traffic and to make more money online with every day that passes. We use software which transforms already hardly intelligible articles in even harder intelligible articles, software which replaces us and automates submissions to article directories, to social media, blog comments. Aren’t we some lousy little cheaters? Maybe we do. Who cares, anyway? However, when it comes to PPC, whatever you do with the rest of your online money making methods, maybe you should remember that PPC is a real money game, where losses can hurt badly. And once you’ve acquired this wisdom, why wouldn’t you revise your methods and try to learn the proper way to make money online? For instance, you could learn how to make money with keywords. It can’t be that hard. I think you’d get there much faster than trying to take an illegal look at other people’s work in forums, work that is useless for you anyway, since you don’t have the main tool required by Pay Per Click: money.

In your quest to find new opportunities to make money online, you may have come across this strange abbreviation: PLR. You probably didn’t have the time to go into more details, so you skipped it and forgot about it in the next two minutes. Well, you overlooked a good way of making money online without having to pay expensive copywriters and web designers work for you.

PLR stands for Private Label Rights, and it means that once you bought a certain PLR product, you also bought additional rights, like the right to resell it (be it at a recommended price, or at your desired one), or the right to offer it for free to your readers, or the right to replace the author’s name with yours and sell it as if it was written by you directly.

What Products Can Be PLR Products?

PLR products can be e-books, reports, software, niche site headers, website templates… anything. Depending on their complexity, the price of Private Label Rights Products can be anywhere between $5 and $500, or $5000, or whatever price their author wants.

Just imagine: you are running a blog about gardening and your goal is to build a list of subscribers, so you can send them information and news from the gardening field (or to tell them about cool new gardening products which they would be able to buy via your affiliate link, granting you a small commission for your work). Now, you want to give an incentive for readers who take the time to join your mailing list: an e-book about growing cucumbers. Let’s suppose you know how to grow great cucumbers, but you don’t have the time to write this book, nor the skills to make it attractive. You’d have to pay a ghost writer to do it for you, and this may cost you some $400-$500. You pay the amount, you get the book, and you estimate that you’d need a certain amount of readers to buy the stuff you sell, in order to break even.

What if you could have the same e-book, as a PLR product, for only $27? It sounds better already, isn’t it?

What if, instead of giving the PLR book away for free, you decide to resell it at the $27 price? At the first buyer you get your investment back, and everything that follows is pure profit, money that enters your PayPal account immediately, without you having to wait until the end of the month or the end of the next month (as you do when you work with affiliate networks).

Where To Get PLR Products From?

Option 1: Search the net for “my desired type of products” + PLR (or Private Label Rights, or reseller rights)
Chances are that you’ll discover some good PLR products in that niche, and you’ll buy them one by one, at their given price. If I were you, I’d also search for “that PLR product” + coupon (or discount), to see if I can get it any cheaper.
Option 2: Join a PLR membership site and get instant access to hundreds of PLR products which you can use as stated by the membership site owners. You remain a member only as long as you wish. Nobody asks you to commit for more than you’d want to. As log as you are a member, each month you’ll have new PLR products added for you to download and use. When you decide that you no longer need the membership, you just cancel it, and you preserve the private label rights for all products you’ve downloaded during your membership period. So, you can stay as a member for 3-4 months, download everything, then use it as you need, whenever you need.

It’s obvious that if you are into several niches, option 2 is the way to go, as it is much more cost effective than option 1. Besides, PLR membership sites have a good habit to offer their members products for personal use, which could help them a lot in their work (like video recording and publishing software, keyword research software, or other internet marketing tools).

How To Find Good PLR Membership Sites?

I’m using PLR products since a couple of years ago and I’m making good money with them. Some of these products are private label rights articles I downloaded in bulk from PLR sites I’m a member of. When I need fresh content for my niche sites, I simply browse my articles collection, choose the ones on the topic I need and rewrite them. PLR give you the right to change the articles in any way you wish and publish them under your name.

When I first started learning about making money online, I discovered the on-page SEO and I focused on it for a long time. While it gave me good results, I was never able to rank first for any competitive keyword I was targeting. Thinking at this and looking at other people to see how they are doing, I discovered the other side of SEO, the off-page SEO optimization, which basically means getting links for your site with representative keywords as anchors.
