Bouiller, the team principal, announced and introduced Fairuz to the Malaysian media at the Lotus GP facility here yesterday.</span><br /> <span style="color: #999999;">Also present at the announcement were Proton Holdings Bhd (PHB) chairman Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, PHB group managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Taher and other PHB board members.</span><br /> <span style="color: #999999;">Bouiller also announced that 25 Malaysian engineers would be employed and based at the F1 facility here as part of a long-term plan.</span><br /> <span style="color: #999999;">Fairuz said his aim was to ensure that he would be a primary driver and not just a reserve driver for the team.</span><br /> <span style="color: #999999;">“I will be racing for the team in the GP2 series and I hope to win some points and medals with the aim of making it to the main team as a regular,” he said, adding that the F1 and GP2 races would run simultaneously.</span><br /> <span style="color: launch plans, the choice of date implies that it could use an interim or 2010 chassis at Valencia from 1-3 February, when testing gets underway again after the winter break.<br /> The second test takes place at Jerez on 10-13 February.<br /> <br /> Force India announced earlier this week that it will definitely use a 2010 machine for the opening Valencia test, but other leading teams look set to kick off with their 2011 cars.<br /> <br /> Ferrari has promised a late-January launch for its new challenger, while Renault, Sauber and Toro Rosso have all scheduled unveilings for the start of class="post_content"><span style="color: #cccccc;">Well, here we go then, my first blog of a new year - and it will take me a while to type it. I've just returned from a skiing trip to France and used so many muscles that even my fingers ache. Mind you, I've promised my wife Harriet a six-pack as a New Year's resolution for the past few years so maybe it's actually the perfect start to 2011! </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">It may only be January but another F1 season will be upon us before we know it - and judging by the tweets I've been receiving it can't come soon enough for lots of you! There's a lot going on and you might have read about changes to the BBC team - I'll come onto those in a bit.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">But there is no doubt that since taking this job it feels as though my life has has entered a warp-speed stage. I look at the calendar ahead of the season and feel rather daunted by the travel, the hours of live television, the garish Eddie Jordan outfit and the drama that awaits us... but before I know it, we'll be at the final race of the year with the champion crowned.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">The winter break is the same. Knowing when the season starts meant that even before we signed off in Abu Dhabi we had already announced how many weeks it was until the 2011 season. So I've spent most of the winter (in between sore throats/colds/flu) ticking off the weeks until we're back in Bahrain.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">I can't believe it's time to turn our attention towards Sebastian Vettel's defence of his crown already.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <div class="asset-more" id="more"><div class="imgCaption"><span style="color: #cccccc;"><img alt="Eddie Jordan, Jake Humphrey and David Coulthard" class="mt-image-none" height="335" src="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jakehumphrey/ejjakedc595.jpg" width="595" /> </span><br /> <div style="color: #666666; font-size: 11px; width: 595px;"><span style="color: #cccccc;">Coulthard (right) will dove-tail his pundit's role with his new commentating duties. Photo: Getty </span></div></div><span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">I vividly remember coming off air in November, having signed off from the final F1 Forum of 2010, and immediately feeling really down. I mentioned it to Martin Brundle, who told me that it's par for the course. After giving so much both mentally and physically to a gruelling nine-month schedule, it's natural that you experience a dip the moment the adrenalin leaves your body and the slog is over.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">Mind you, my dip wasn't quite as big as Ferrari's, was it? I'm sure over the winter you've read the revelations that team principal Stefano Domenicali considered walking away after the Scuderia's strategy calls contributed to Red Bull's double success. Well, to understand what Domenicali must have been feeling, you need to realise how much emotion is involved in a sport more famed for its technical element.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">Many of the Red Bull engineers and mechanics have worked for that team throughout all the name changes, back-of-the-field struggles and double retirements they have experienced in less successful years, so you can imagine the outpouring of joy that greeted Vettel's title in Abu Dhabi. And from men who spend their days in the macho world of racing there were plenty of tears as the best partiers in the paddock lived up to their reputation of working hard and playing hard, too.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">As I left them to their celebrations, I walked into the pit lane and looked along the garages, where I was met with the clearest example of what suspect calls on the pit wall can lead to. </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">Right next door to the loud music and joy emanating from the Red Bull garage, there was just one lonely mechanic standing and talking on the phone in a still, silent Ferrari garage.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">The money they'd spent, the car they'd devoted thousands of hours to, the flights they'd taken and the dreams they'd had eventually came to nothing. The car was now obsolete, the season over and all because of one split-second decision on the pit wall. That is what makes this such a fascinating sport. </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">I think we all felt a bit odd at the end of the season. Imagine how it was for our own former Red Bull driver David Coulthard, seeing the team you raced for achieving the ultimate success. He must have had all sorts of emotions. </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">You'll get the chance to hear for yourself next season just how emotional grand prix racing makes David because, as well as chasing around the paddock with Eddie and me, he is stepping up into the commentary box. </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">I'm really excited about a 13-time winner sharing his knowledge in the race with you. Remember, David has raced most of the guys on the grid, has first-hand experience of the inner workings of current champions Red Bull and, most importantly, has driven contemporary F1 machinery.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">There is no doubt that it is a daunting prospect for him but I think he will fly once he settles in. I always tell him that the pre- and post-race "waffle", as I jokingly refer to it, is important and an interesting way of adding depth to a race weekend. However, we don't directly affect people's enjoyment of the actual racing. </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">In my mind, the commentary is a somewhat more responsible role for that reason and is also the trickiest job going. I wouldn't swap the pit lane for the commentary box for all the sand in Bahrain!</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">Although David is moving to the commentary box, the 'three-o' of myself, DC and EJ will remain. We love working together and, when you get an on-screen chemistry that people seem to enjoy, it would be foolish to break it up. </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">However, David will need to hustle his white jeans to the commentary box a little earlier so immediately pre- and post-race will be a chance for EJ to get on his soap box and share his views at a time when the audience is joining us in their droves for the racing.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">The most fascinating part of any race weekend for me has always been settling down to watch the grand prix with Eddie and David as they discuss the race unfolding while regaling me with anecdotes of their first-hand experience. Well, I won't get that anymore but my loss is certainly your gain and I think we've a really strong team in place for 2011.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">And who will be alongside David in the box? His long-time friend, one-time business partner and full-time expert on the sport - Martin Brundle.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">Martin has had more races behind the microphone than behind the wheel - and what better qualifications can you have than to have taken part in the sport for so long, commentating on almost every race for the past 14 years? I thought in 2010 his instincts, ability to read the race and general enthusiasm for the sport he has dedicated his life to were as prevalent as ever.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">I don't envy the work that lies ahead for Martin, though. It might seem like a small change on paper but, in reality, while DC will be sharing his views on drivers, strategy and taking us as close to the cockpit as possible, Martin will need to be aware of every little story, political development and technical development as he calls the action. Racing drivers only exist to be the best, so expect to see him giving it his all to make it a huge success.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">Clearly, however, the changes I've talked about mean that Jonathan Legard will no longer be part of our team - I know I'm going to really miss him.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">I first met 'Ledgy', as we affectionately call him, at Craven Cottage, where we were both covering football. It was November 2008 and we had both been lined up for the new F1 season. We got talking and were both brimming with excitement and anticipation about the adventure ahead.</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">I remember before the 2009 season started and we were both incredibly nervous about taking on something as important and prestigious as F1 and I told him how worried I was about the challenge ahead. His instant reply was: "We can both either have an easy life or an exciting life and I know which one I want!"</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">That is typical Jonathan - always encouraging, incredibly enthusiastic, a good friend to us all, and without doubt the hardest working member of the BBC's F1 team, doing an incredibly difficult job. I know I speak for every member of the production when I say we're all going to miss his entertaining company and his absolute dedication to the job. All the best for the future Jonathan!</span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;"><br /> </span><br /> <span style="color: #cccccc;">One thing you may well also miss is standard-definition coverage. MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 218px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5498080243366890690" border="0" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uTJlyL73JYk/TE0a2ex6DMI/AAAAAAAACPo/pIRbuCV_g2Y/s320/2010-german-gp-1.jpg" /></a><br /><div>Ferrari have been fined $100,000 by the FIA for implementing team orders during today's German Grand Prix.<br /><br />Team principal Stefano Domenicali, team manager Massimo Rivola and drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso were summoned to face the stewards following the race at Hockenheim.<br />After what appeared to be a coded message from Massa's race engineer Rob Smedley on lap 47, the Brazilian then let Alonso past two laps later, the Spaniard going on to claim the 23rd win of his career.<br />After meeting with the stewards, Ferrari were deemed in breach of article 39.1 of the FIA 2010 sporting regulations that states "team orders which interfere with a race result are prohibited".<br />They were also charged with a breach of article 151c of the FIA International Sporting Code.<br />That relates to "any fraudulent conduct, or any act prejudicial to the interests of any competition or to the interests of motor sport generally".<br />The stewards have also referred the matter to the FIA World Motor Sport Council for further consideration. </div><br /><div>Ferrari could be banned from Formula One after Sunday's German Grand Prix<br />The Italian team were found guilty by race stewards of 'bringing the sport into disrepute' for ordering their other driver, Brazil's Felipe Massa, to relinquish the lead to his team-mate.<br /><br />The FIA hearing is expected to be held in Paris next month, when the range of options open to the Council extends to expelling Ferrari from the world championship.<br />Although that is unlikely, the sport's most famous marque could realistically expect to have yesterday's result expunged. A suspension for a number of races is another possibility. </div><br /><div>Condemnation rained down on Ferrari last night. Former team owner Eddie Jordan said: 'It was unlawful and theft. They stole from us the chance of having a wheel-to-wheel contest between the drivers.Ferrari should be ashamed. This was a team order. For me it is cheating and the two cars should be excluded. It looks as if a young Spaniard acted petulantly and Ferrari have reacted.'<br />Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said: 'That is the clearest team order I have seen. It's wrong for the sport. <br />“I also think it’s good for the championship to have a variety of circuits – we’ve just come from a fast, flowing road course in Canada, to a tight street track in Valencia, and next month we’ll be at Silverstone – one of the fastest tracks of the year, and a circuit with incredible history. As a driver, that sort of variety makes the racing exciting and unpredictable, which is all you can really ask for.<br /><br />“The last few grands prix have had some fantastic racing – it would be great for all the Spanish fans if we can have a great race here too. It’s not a circuit where we’ve seen too much passing in the past, but I think this year could be different – the grid is so tight and there were battles all through the field in Montreal last week, so I think we could have a close and exciting race this year.”<br />Hamilton’s enthusiasm for what lies ahead is shared by team-mate and title-winning successor Jenson Button, who sits just three markers adrift of his countryman in the points table after finishing a close second to him in both Turkey and Canada. The Frome-born ace’s record in Valencia is on paper substantially less impressive – with a lowly and distant seventh place there last season the highlight – but now fully in possession of the tools to do the job, the 30-year-old expects to put up a strong fight this weekend.<br /><br />“As a team, we’ve taken maximum points in the last two races and it feels like we’ve really gathered considerable momentum,” the nine-time grand prix-winner underlined. “The team really is functioning as a single unit, so I think we head into Valencia hopeful of being able to once again capitalise on that determination and ambition.<br /><br />“Even though it’s a street circuit, it’s got quite a different feel to other street tracks like Monte Carlo or Singapore. For a start, it’s quite a bit faster – there are some low-speed corners with some fairly unforgiving walls at the apex, but there are also some high-speed changes of direction and some long straights, so it’s quite an interesting place set-up wise. It’s not as if you completely rely on downforce; there’s a trade-off, and that should suit our package.<br /><br />“Valencia is also the final race before two important stop-offs in the UK – our home race at Silverstone and, before that, the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Both are events where the British fans will be out in-force, and as world champion, I’m looking forward to them. Silverstone will be an incredible experience, and I get to achieve a childhood dream of driving one of Alain Prost’s classic McLarens, the MP4/2C, at Goodwood. It marks the second win in Canada for the 25-year-old Hamilton.<br />The victory also lifted Hamilton to the top of the world championship with 109 points, three ahead of Button and six ahead of Webber, who had held the lead going into the Canadian GP.<br />Hamilton called his win the toughest of his career.<br />“It was the toughest race I’ve ever been in,” he said. “We had great pace all the way through but we had to fight traffic all the way as well. So far this season, I would have to say it was the ultimate challenge.”<br />There was one moment, however, that could have ruined Hamilton’s day. On exiting after his first pit stop, he came close to locking wheels with Alonso.<br />“On our in-lap to change tires, I was ahead of Alonso but he had some problems and ended up coming out beside him,” he said.<br />“He was in my blind spot, but he managed to race us to the end of pit lane and got out in front of us.”<br />From that point on, Hamilton said, the race was hard fight for every turn on every lap. But he added, the hard fighting made his win all the more satisfying.<br />“It has been a tremendous weekend, it has been fantastic,” Hamilton said. “I got here on Wednesday and things have gone so well. Quite simply after the “Istan-Bulls-Up”, the team faces the biggest challenge of its five year history.<br />Their car is the class of the field — a Red Bull has been on the front row of the starting grid for every Grand Prix this season — and their two drivers are proven race-winners and championship contenders.<br /><br />Yet if their run of success is to continue, they need to reassert discipline across the entire team.<br />The debates will rage for months over Webber and Vettel’s respective actions. But the outbursts by Red Bull Racing driver development manager Dr. Helmut Markko inflamed rather than defused the pressures in the Istanbul paddock and undermined the authority of team principal Christian Horner.<br />That Markko blamed Webber for the incident and took sides with Vettel isn’t too surprising. Markko was the man who “discovered” Vettel and with the aid of Red Bull funding, assisted him into Formula One.<br /><br />Frankly, having supervised the spending of millions of dollars of Red Bull money on funding a series of young drivers who largely failed to make it at the top level, Vettel’s success has probably kept Markko in a job. The term “meal ticket” springs to mind.<br />Markko’s comments demonstrate the most dangerous fall-out that could come from the Istanbul incident; the creation of factions within the team. Remember Alonso and Hamilton at McLaren in 2007? Their animosity created a rift which tore the team apart.<br /><br />It could, heaven forbid, be even be worse. The name of the circuit which hosts this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix reminds us of a chilling warning from history.<br />In 1982 Gilles Villeneuve felt that team-mate Didier Pironi had tricked him out of victory by reneging on a pre-race agreement and diving past as he was cruising to a Ferrari 1-2 in the San Marino Grand Prix.<br /><br />The Ferrari drivers’ rivalry became a bitter feud. In qualifying for the next race, on a wet track at Zolder in Belgium, the pair were 1-2 on the grid, but Villeneuve set out on one final lap, determined to outqualify Pironi at all costs. In blinding spray, the Ferrari hit a slower car and Villeneuve died.<br />This weekend, the phenomenal speed of the McLarens may prove critical to beating the Red Bulls on Montreal’s long straights.<br />McLaren precedents certainly look good. Hamilton scored his maiden victory here in 2007 and before retiring after tailgating Kimi Raikkonen in the pitlane (oops!) in 2008, he had dominated the race from pole position.<br />Expect an equally close-fought battle between Mercedes GP, Renault and Ferrari for the next slots.<br />Their cars don’t seem to quite have the aerodynamic refinement of the front-runners, but their battle will be no less intriguing.<br />Force India seem destined to battle at the tail of the top ten and there are rumours of frustration within the team at the performance of Vitantonio Liuzzi. If the Italian were to be dropped, who would be in?<br />Team test-driver Paul di Resta lacks race experience, so how about Karun Chandhok, who now has plenty of race practice, but is wasted in the uncompetitive HRT car?<br />The rumour-mill is increasingly hinting that Karun might be given the chance. "I have just always been able to dial the car in here. It has suited my driving style, so hopefully we will see the same this weekend. I'm hoping the car will be quite competitive."<br />The race at the demanding track is back on the F1 schedule after a one-year absence.<br />In 2008, Robert Kubica raced to his lone F1 victory, teaming with Nick Heidfeld to give BMW Sauber a 1-2 finish.<br />"You have to reduce your downforce, but, on the other hand, you have to have good mechanical grip," said Kubica, now driving for Renault. "There's a lot of heavy braking, which I always like.<br />The 2.7-mile (4.3-kilometer for Canadians) road course sits on Ile Notre Dame, a slender landfill island off the southern bank of the St. Lawrence River. But promoter Tavo Hellmund had been dealing with Bernie Ecclestone for over two years while trying to put the deal together.<br />In Turkey on Thursday, SPEEDtv.com’s Adam Cooper spoke with Ecclestone about the race, and while the F1 chief executive wasn’t giving too much away, what he did say was, as ever, fascinating… </div><br /><div><br /><strong>Q: Is it fair to say that Tavo’s dad brought F1 back to Mexico in 1988?<br /></strong>“I think together, we did, yes!” </div><div><br /><strong>Q: And you’ve been friends ever since?</strong><br />“Yes, we’ve kept in touch. It was the right and the wrong place. I think everybody thought that Tony didn’t need any help.” </div><div><br /><strong>Q: Even in Texas finding $200m to build a circuit isn’t easy...</strong><br />“He’s done it, otherwise he wouldn’t embark on it.” </div><div> </div><div><strong>Q: And a permanent track is the way to go?<br /></strong>“This sort of facility [Istanbul]. It’s going to look good.” </div><div><br /><strong>Q: It’s a better bet that a street race?</strong><br />“Yes, sure. I think we’ve got enough street races now.” </div><div><br /><strong>Q: Is it fair to say that street races like Phoenix were not the best way for the American public to see F1?</strong><br />“I don’t know what the American public want to see in motor sport. I think they’ve seen too much oval racing, so I hope we can wean them off that!”<br /><strong></strong></div><div><strong>Q: Do you think he can get a crowd?<br /></strong>“Yes, sure. We've qualified, yeah," Webber grinned back to the German. "We are there and we're playing you guys in the first match. Barrichello (centre back) can afford to be smug </div><div><br />"I'm not a massive football fan but when it comes to the World Cup we're all very interested."<br />Could Hamilton, a close pal of France star Thierry Henry, shed any more light on England's chances in the group games against the USA, Slovenia and Algeria?<br />"The US - well they're American footballers and not really soccer guys," cheekily began Hamilton, who spends a lot of time in the States with pop star girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger.<br />"Actually they've got some good footballers but don't forget we've got some incredible players.<br />"I've no doubt England will be strong but I don't make predictions. As soon as Damon Hill was announced last week as one of four stewards for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix, there was perhaps always going to be a controversial decision involving his old nemesis Michael Schumacher.<br /></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472270182087523762" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 182px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uTJlyL73JYk/S_FovL5J_bI/AAAAAAAACPI/EdZ1Esny1Fo/s320/MERCEDES_SCHUMACHER_231209.jpg" border="0" /> <p align="center"><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Penalised: Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher was demoted to 12th place at the end of the Monaco GP after a stewards' panel decided his move on Fernando Alonso was illegal</span> </p><br />Sure enough, 16 years after losing the 1994 championship by a single point to the German after the pair tangled in Adelaide, Hill had the opportunity to exact some small measure of revenge.<br /><br />Schumacher had passed Ferrari's Fernando Alonso on the last corner of the race following the departure of a safety car and crossed the line sixth, prompting a stewards' inquiry because rule 40.13 states that "if the race ends whilst the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit-lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking".<br /><br />The German was confident he would escape sanction, telling reporters that he had received a message saying "Safety car in. Track clear".<br />"If that's given then its racing," Schumacher argued. "You can have the message 'safety car and finish under safety car rule', it's a different message."<br /><br /><div>However, the stewards found against the German, who was handed a 20-second penalty dropping him to 12th and out of the points.
