Report: #Chargers sign free agent DE Dwight Freeney to 2-year deal

Needing to fortify their pass rush following OLB Melvin Ingram's knee injury, the Chargers and free agent Dwight Freeney have reportedly agreed to a two-year contract. No longer an elite sack master, the 33-year-old still had five in 2012 for the #Colts. Freeney spent the 11 seasons of his career in Indianapolis and had at least 10 in seven of those campaigns, the last time in 2010.

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy told SI.com's Peter King that he anticipates rookie Manti Te'o to start inside as the team's quot;Mike" linebacker next to veteran Donald Butler. "Our plan is for him to play three downs, and when we scouted him, we believed that's what he'd be,'' McCoy said. Interesting to note that Teo's first true exposure to the team's veterans comes on Monday.

Oakland Raiders quarterback Tyler Wilson, a fourth-round selection out of the University of Arkansas, has quot;displayed the poise and skills of a seasoned veteran in only his second practice" according to Steve Corkran, a local beat writer with the San Jose Mercury News. Head coach Dennis Allen said, "Obviously, picking up a new system, there's a little bit of rust there. But throwing the ball, he's done a nice job. I don't have any question about his arm strength and accuracy."

Philip Rivers was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league from 2008 through 2010. He averaged 30 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions to go with about 4,300 passing yards. After a couple of down years, Chargers head coach Mike McCoy thinks Rivers can be that good again and that he can be even better in one department: completion percentage. McCoy told Sports Illustrated's Peter King that if Rivers trusts McCoy's system, a bigger diet of short passes will help Rivers complete 70 percent of his throws this season. Rivers' career high in completion percentage is 66.0.

With that duo forming an intriguing backfield combo going forward, there is not enough room for Willis McGahee and Knowshon Moreno. That stands as a primary reason why Mike Klis with the Denver Post says that barring injury it is quot;highly unlikely" both veterans will be with the team this upcoming season.
