Using India Office Records Half Day Course

Peter Bailey is to give a 'Half-Day Course' on 'Using the India Office Library Records' at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday, 23rd August at the Society of Genealists Lecture Centre, 14, Charterhouse Buildings. Goswell Road, London EC1M 7BA. The lectures will cover all records that beginners and more experienced researchers might be expected to require in the study of their British India Family History. The half-day course is to be run by the SoG and those wishing to attend should contact the Society on 020 7553 3290 or events@sog.org.uk to book a place.

Batta Mutiny

To indicate their displeasure at the loss of 'Double Batta' in 1766 imposed by Lord Robert Clive at the insistence of the Court of Directors, A large number of Officers conspired to hand in their resignations 'en masse' in May 1766. They hoped that Clive would relent and re-instate this particular priviledge. However, Clive called their bluff by summoning officers from Madras and by offering commissions to other 'gentlemen'.This list includes as many officers known to have been serving in the Bengal Army in May 1766, including those who resigned where known.

Events to Celebrate the 300th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Armenian Holy Church of Nazareth, Kolkata

The Committee of Armenian Church in Kolkata is delighted to announce the celebration of the historic 300th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the Holy Church of Nazareth in 1707, between the 8th November and 15th November 2008, in Kolkata.

Included in the events is the re-consecration of the equally historic St. Marys Church in Chennai (formerly Madras), the birthplace of Armenian newspaper journalism, which has recently been renovated.

The Committee of the Armenian Church takes this opportunity to extend an invitation to all those who are interested to participate in these events to join in this special and unique occasion.

A diverse range of events will take place throughout the week, which will include a thanksgiving service at the Holy Nazareth church, visit to the historic and renowned Armenian College and Philanthropic Academy, a cultural seminar featuring distinguished Armenian speakers and historians, tours to the two other Armenian churches in Kolkata as well as visits to the Armenian churches in Chinsurah and Saidabad.

It is expected that His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos and Supreme Patriarch of all Armenians will grace the occasion with his presence and blessings.

It is also expected that as many members of the community, local, national and international will attend all or some aspects of the events.

Suffolk Regimental Gazette 1891

The Suffolk Record Office at Bury St Edmunds and the Suffolk Regiment Museum have very kindly allowed FIBIS to transcribe entries from the 'Suffolk Regiment Gazette'. This is an ongoing project and we are pleased to announce that personnel entries whilst the Regiment was serving in India in 1891 are now available online on our website.

Madras Military Female Asylum 1839 Records

Peter Baileys transcription of the Madras Military Female Asylum 1839 Records held in British Library have now been added to the FIBIS online database. This contains details of several hundred orphaned girls attending the Madras Military Female Asylum in 1839 and some details of girls who had left the establishment between 1829 and 1838. Read more

Bidadari Cemetery, Singapore

The Bidadari cemetery was opened in 1908 and closed in 1972. The graves include those of Merchant Seamen who worked for the ex-Blue Funnel/Glen Line, Straits Steamship, CP Ships and many other companies.

In 2003 the Singapore Government closed the Bidadari Cemetery in Singapore so that it could be re-developed. The process involved the exhumation and cremation of those laid to rest there.

Graves were exhumed and the remains cremated. The ashes are retained in individual urns at a Singapore government columbarium awaiting collection or instructions from the next-of-kin. The ashes will be scattered at sea between 24-29 March 2008.

Next-of-kin who wish to claim cremated remains need to contact Mr Yeo Eng Chuan of the Housing and Development Board before 17 March 2008 on (++65) 6490 3053 or email yec2@hdb.gov.sg . Please note that Singapore time is GMT +8).

Brief religious rites will be performed before the scattering by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore and the National Council of Churches at Mount Vernon Service Hall 1, Upper Alijunied Road, Singapore 367878 at 9am on 24 March 2008.
